The anodized titanium nanotubes (TiO2-NTs) are considered to be a potential material in clinical therapy. To enhance the antibacterial property of TiO2-NTs, cefuroxime is introduced into TiO2-NTs, and then, different chitosan layers are coated to control the release of cefuroxime. SEM and FTIR are adapted for the characterization of prepared TiO2-NTs. The effects of chitosan coating thickness on release of cefuroxime are also investigated, followed with the antibacterial property evaluation. The results show TiO2-NTs are fabricated by anodization method and cefuroxime is also successfully loaded into the nanotubes. The thickness of chitosan coating is an important factor to the release rate of cefuroxime. Antimicrobial detection and morphology observation of S. aureus show a sustained 7-day drug release and strong negative effect on bacteria. The approach in this study provides a broadly applicable method to fabricate titanium-based orthopedic implants with enhanced antibacterial properties. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Highlights: A triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG) and a glucose fuel cell (GFC) were separately designed to harvest biomechanical energy from body motion and biochemical energy from glucose molecules. A hybrid energy-harvesting system (HEHS) which consisted of TENG and GFC was developed successfully, and it can simultaneously harvest biomechanical energy and biochemical energy.Various types of energy exist everywhere around us, and these energies can be harvested from multiple sources to power micro-/nanoelectronic system and even personal electronic products. In this work, we proposed a hybrid energy-harvesting system (HEHS) for potential in vivo applications. The HEHS consisted of a triboelectric nanogenerator and a glucose fuel cell for simultaneously harvesting biomechanical energy and biochemical energy in simulated body fluid. These two energy-harvesting units can work individually as a single power source or work simultaneously as an integrated system. This design strengthened the flexibility of harvesting multiple energies and enhanced corresponding electric output. Compared with any individual device, the integrated HEHS outputs a superimposed current and has a faster charging rate. Using the harvested energy, HEHS can power a calculator or a green light-emitting diode pattern. Considering the widely existed biomechanical energy and glucose molecules in the body, the developed HEHS can be a promising candidate for building in vivo self-powered healthcare monitoring system. The effect of TiO2 nanoparticles with different physical characters on MC3T3-E1 cells proliferation, differentiation and immunotoxity has been investigated. The CCK-8 method shows that the anatase and rutile nano-TiO2 inhibit cells proliferation at the concentration of 20, 50, 100 µg/mL. The anatase nano-TiO2 shows more inhibitory effect on cells viability than rutile, but there is not statistically different. Coculturing with MC3T3-E1 for 7 d and 14 d, the anatese and rutile both decrease the alkaline phosphatase (ALP) synthesis. The enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) is used to detect the interleukin-1 (IL-1) and interleukin-6 (IL-6) levels in the cell cultures. By culturing by anatase and rutile at different concentration, MC3T3-E1 secretes IL-1, at the same time largely secretes IL-6. In addition, at the concentration of 20 µg/mL, the anatase stimulates cells to secrete more IL-6 than rutile. Therefore, TiO2 nanoparticles have an influence on the proliferation and differentiation of MC3T3-E1 cells and cause the immunotoxicity. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The toxicological effect of TiO2 nanoparticles with different crystal structure (80 nm for rutile and 155 nm for anatase) on female mice was investigated through intranasal instillation. After exposure for 30 days at the dose of 50 mg/kg body weight, no abnormal activity and mortality were observed with the normally increasing body weight of mice. The coefficients of tissues to body weight also show no obvious difference from the control except the increased coefficient of kidneys in mice exposed to 80 nm TiO2 nanoparticles. Titanium contents and histopathology examination indicate the no pathological response in the lung was induced by the increased TiO2 deposition, and the liver, heart, and spleen were not influenced. The severe pathology changes in kidneys suggest that TiO2 nanoparticles may be excreted out by kidneys via system circulation. However, the serum biochemical parameters were not changed compared with the control, which means no obvious functional impairment induced by the nasal exposure for 30 days. In addition, the higher titanium contents in the brain tissues imply that the translocation and deposition of nanoparticles through intranasal instilling pathway is different from the other routes such as intratracheal inhalation or intratracheal instillation. OBJECTIVE The antioxidative system in human hepatocellular carcinoma was investigated. METHODS The activities of cytosolic catalase (CAT), superoxide dismutase, glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px), glutathione S-tranferase and levels of reduced glutathione, total protein thiols and malondialdehyde were assayed in 10 cases of hepatocellular carcinoma and adjacent normal liver. RESULTS Hepatoma tissues showed higher activities of CAT, GSH-Px and lower content of total antioxidative capacity compared to adjacent normal liver tissue ( P<0.05). CONCLUSION These findings suggest that the antioxidative defense — related enzymes and antioxidants are largely regulated in hepatoma cells.
