Phycocyanin 620 (PC620) is the outermost light-harvesting complex in phycobilisome of cyanobacteria, engaged in light collection and energy transfer to the core antenna, allophycocyanin. Recently, long-lived exciton–vibrational coherences have been observed in allophycocyanin, accounting for the coherent energy transfer [Zhu et al., Nat. Commun. 15, 3171 (2024)]. PC620 has a nearly identical spatial location of three α84–β84 phycocyanobilin pigment pairs to those in allophycocyanin, inferring an existence of possible coherent energy transfer pathways. However, whether PC620 undergoes coherent or incoherent energy transfer remains debated. Furthermore, accurate determination of energy transfer rates in PC620 is still necessary owing to the spectral overlap and broadening in conventional time-resolved spectroscopic measurements. In this work, the energy transfer process within PC620 was directly resolved by polarization-controlled two dimensional electronic spectroscopy (2DES) and global analysis. The results show that the energy transfer from α84 to the adjacent β84 has a lifetime constant of 400 fs, from β155 to β84 of 6–8 ps, and from β155 to α84 of 66 ps, fully conforming to the Förster resonance energy transfer mechanism. The circular dichroism spectrum also reveals that the α84–β84 pigment pair does not form excitonic dimer, and the observed oscillatory signals are confirmed to be vibrational coherence, excluding the exciton–vibrational coupling. Nodal line slope analysis of 2DES further reveals that all the vibrational modes participate in the energy dissipation of the excited states. Our results consolidate that the ultrafast energy transfer process in PC620 is incoherent, where the twisted conformation of α84 is suggested as the main cause for preventing the formation of α84–β84 excitonic dimer in contrast to allophycocyanin. Understanding the dynamics of excited-state vibrational energy relaxation in photosynthetic pigments is crucial for elucidating the mechanisms underlying energy transfer processes in light-harvesting complexes. Utilizing advanced femtosecond broadband transient fluorescence (TF) spectroscopy, we explored the excited-state vibrational dynamics of Chlorophyll-a (Chl-a) both in solution and within the light-harvesting complex II (LHCII). We discovered a vibrational cooling (VC) process occurring over ∼6 ps in Chl-a in ethanol solution following Soret band excitation, marked by a notable ultrafast TF blueshift and spectral narrowing. This VC process, crucial for regulating the vibronic lifetimes, was further elucidated through the direct observation of the population dynamics of higher vibrational states within the Qy electronic state. Notably, Chl-a within LHCII demonstrated significantly faster VC dynamics, unfolding within a few hundred femtoseconds and aligning with the ultrafast energy transfer processes observed within the complex. Our findings shed light on the complex interaction between electronic and vibrational states in photosynthetic pigments, underscoring the pivotal role of vibrational dynamics in enabling efficient energy transfer within light-harvesting complexes. With the rapid development of the e-commerce industry, RMFS is prevalent in the modern logistic center. As for this advanced system, robots can apply two following strategies: all-time following and non-following in a task. Alltime following strategy means that robot follows the picking rack until the task is completed, and non-following strategy refers to that robot will leave the rack to perform other tasks when the rack is queued at the workstation, and the robot will be dispatched when the rack needs to be moved. For the robot scheduling problem under two kinds of following strategies, aiming at the shortest total time for the robot to complete the wave tasks, the robot scheduling models under two kinds of following strategies are designed. The simulation experimental platform under two kinds of following strategies are designed based on genetic algorithm, and the system performance of all-time following strategy and non- following strategy is compared through simulation experiments. The decision-making curve of the following strategy based on the shortest total time is obtained, and it is proved that selecting the appropriate following strategy, which is combined with the specific working conditions, can effectively improve the operation efficiency of the picking system. However, this process is sluggish, and even worse, it is a CO2‐emitting and carbon resource waste process. Therefore, it is highly urgent to develop a novel strategy for recycling post‐consumer PLA to achieve a circular plastic economy. Herein, we report a one‐pot photoreforming route for the efficient and selective amination of PLA waste into value‐added alanine using CoP/CdS catalysts under mild conditions. Results show the alanine production rate can reach up to 2.4 mmol gcat−1 h−1, with a high selectivity (>75 %) and excellent stability. Time‐resolved transient absorption spectra (TAS) reveal that CoP can rapidly extract photogenerated electrons from CdS to accelerate proton reduction, favoring hole‐dominated PLA oxidation to coproduce alanine. The lifetime of electronic coherences found in photosynthetic antennas is known to be too short to match the energy transfer time, rendering the coherent energy transfer mechanism inactive. Exciton-vibrational coherence time in excitonic dimers which consist of two chromophores coupled by excitation transfer interaction, can however be much longer. Uncovering the mechanism for sustained coherences in a noisy biological environment is challenging, requiring the use of simpler model systems as proxies. Here, via two-dimensional electronic spectroscopy experiments, we present compelling evidence for longer exciton-vibrational coherence time in the allophycocyanin trimer, containing excitonic dimers, compared to isolated pigments. This is attributed to the quantum phase synchronization of the resonant vibrational collective modes of the dimer, where the anti-symmetric modes, coupled to excitonic states with fast dephasing, are dissipated. The decoupled symmetric counterparts are subject to slower energy dissipation. The resonant modes have a predicted nearly 50% reduction in the vibrational amplitudes, and almost zero amplitude in the corresponding dynamical Stokes shift spectrum compared to the isolated pigments. Our findings provide insights into the mechanisms for protecting coherences against the noisy environment. Photosynthesis in biological systems occurs in a noisy environment that reduces the lifetime of coherences in the excitation energy transfer. Parametric superfluorescence (PSF), which originated from the optical amplification of vacuum quantum noise, is the primary noise source of femtosecond fluorescence non-collinear optical parametric amplification spectroscopy (FNOPAS). It severely affects the detection limit of FNOPAS to collect the femtosecond time-resolved spectra of extremely weak fluorescence. Here, we report the development of femtosecond fluorescence conical optical parametric amplification spectroscopy (FCOPAS), aimed at effectively suppressing the noise fluctuation from the PSF background. In contrast to traditional FNOPAS configurations utilizing lateral fluorescence collection and dot-like parametric amplification, FCOPAS employs an innovative conical fluorescence collection and ring-like amplification setup. This design enables effective cancellation of noise fluctuation across the entire PSF ring, resulting in an approximate order of magnitude reduction in PSF noise compared to prior FNOPAS outcomes. This advancement enables the resolution of transient fluorescence spectra of 4-dicyanomethylene-2-methyl-6-p-dimethylaminostyryl-4H-pyran (DCM) dye molecules in ethanol, even at an optically dilute concentration of 10−6 mol/l, with significantly enhanced signal-to-noise ratios. The presence of quantum coherence in light-harvesting complex II (LHCII) as a mechanism to understand the efficiency of the light-harvesting function in natural photosynthetic systems is still debated due to its structural complexity and weak-amplitude coherent oscillations. Here, we revisit the coherent dynamics and clarify different types of coherences in the energy transfer processes of LHCII using a joint method of the high-S/N transient grating and two-dimensional electronic spectroscopy. We find that the electronic coherence decays completely within 50 fs at room temperature. The vibrational coherences of chlorophyll a dominate over oscillations within 1 ps, whereas a low-frequency mode of 340 cm−1 with a vibronic mixing character may participate in vibrationally assisted energy transfer between chlorophylls a. Solar hydrogen production at a high efficiency holds the significant importance in the age of energy crisis, while the micro‐environment manipulation of active sites on photocatalysts plays a profound role in enhancing the catalytic performance. In this work, a series of well‐defined single‐site Ni‐grafted TiO2 photocatalysts with unique and specific coordination environments, 2,2′‐bipyridine‐Ni−O−TiO2 (T−Ni Bpy) and 2‐Phenylpyridine‐Ni−O−TiO2 (T−Ni Phpy), were constructed with the methods of surface organometallic chemistry combined with surface ligand exchange for visible‐light‐induced photocatalytic hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). A prominent rate of 33.82 μmol ⋅ g−1 ⋅ h−1 and a turnover frequency of 0.451 h−1 for Ni are achieved over the optimal catalyst T−Ni Bpy for HER, 260‐fold higher than those of Ni−O−TiO2. Fewer electrons trapped oxygen vacancies and a larger portion of long‐lived photogenerated electrons (>3 ns, ~52.9 %), which were demonstrated by the electron paramagnetic resonance and femtosecond transient IR absorption, correspond to the photocatalytic HER activity over the T−Ni Bpy. The number of long‐lived free electrons injected from the Ni photoabsorber to the conduction band of TiO2 is one of the determining factors for achieving the excellent HER activity. In this work, ultrafast carrier dynamics of mechanically exfoliated 1T-TiSe2 flakes from the high-quality single crystals with self-intercalated Ti atoms are investigated by femtosecond transient absorption spectroscopy. The observed coherent acoustic and optical phonon oscillations after ultrafast photoexcitation reveal the strong electron–phonon coupling in 1T-TiSe2. The ultrafast carrier dynamics probed in both visible and mid-infrared regions indicate that some photogenerated carriers localize near the intercalated Ti atoms and form small polarons rapidly within several picoseconds after photoexcitation due to the strong and short-range electron–phonon coupling. The formation of polarons leads to a reduction of carrier mobility and a long-time relaxation process of photoexcited carriers for several nanoseconds. The formation and dissociation rates of the photoinduced polarons are dependent on both the pump fluence and the thickness of TiSe2 sample. This work offers new insights into the photogenerated carrier dynamics of 1T-TiSe2, and emphasizes the effects of intercalated atoms on the electron and lattice dynamics after photoexcitation. Photocatalytic generation of •OH from O3 is an intriguing avenue for aqueous organics degradation due to the high utilization of photogenerated electrons, but ambiguous information about charge transfer and surface‐active sites hinders the optimization of photocatalysts. In this work, a series of cobalt single‐atom catalysts (SACs) anchored on graphitic carbon nitride to improve •OH generation from O3 via electron reduction and catalytic activation dual pathway is synthesized. Various characterization and density functional theory calculations reveal that cobalt single atoms can introduce trap states for holes, which improve the light‐harvesting ability and accelerate the transfer of electrons and holes. Meanwhile, Co single atoms can also act as active sites to accelerate ozone decomposition and produce •OH directly. Particularly, the influence of different surface densities of Co single atoms on photogenerated electron supply and surface reaction is disclosed. A higher density of Co provided more active sites for O3 catalytic activation, but the narrowed distance between oxidation and reduction centers reduces the supply of available electrons by worsening the charge recombination. This work offers an atomic‐level correlation of the isolated metal density and photocatalytic properties, and can scientifically guide the design of high‐performance photocatalysts for organic synthesis and water purification. Herein, we demonstrate a new protocol of natural Z‐Scheme heterostructures by strategically engineering the component and interfacial structure of red mud bauxite waste. Advanced characterizations elucidated that the hydrogen‐induced formation of metallic Fe enabled the effective Z‐Scheme electron transfer from γ‐Fe2O3 to TiO2, leading to the significantly boosted spatial separation of photo‐generated carriers for overall water splitting. To the best of our knowledge, it is the first Z‐Scheme heterojunction based on natural minerals for solar fuel production. To explore the inhibitory effect and mechanism of theaflavin (TF1), human hepatoma carcinoma Bel-7402 cells were treated with different concentrations of TF1. Cell viability was detected by CCK8 and cell proliferation was detected by colony formation assay. Cell migration was detected by cell wound healing experiment and transwell chamber assay. Cell apoptosis was detected by flow cytometry. Apoptosis-related proteins (Bax, Bcl-2, PARP), migration related proteins (E-cad, N-cad, Vimentin, MMP9) and signaling pathway related proteins (TGF-β, Smad3, p-smad3) were detected by western blot. The results show that different concentrations of TF1 could inhibit the proliferation and migration of Bel-7402 cells and promote their apoptosis in a dose-dependent manner. The higher the dose, the stronger the inhibition effect (P<0.05). Compared with the control group, the expression levels of Bax and E-cad proteins in the experimental group were higher, while the expression levels of Bcl-2, PARP, N-cad, Vimentin, MMP9, TGF-β, Smad3 and p-smad3 were lower (P<0.05). In conclusion, TF1 could inhibit the proliferation and migration of Bel-7402 cells and promote their apoptosis through TGF-β signaling pathway. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We report the photosynthesis of nitrate from N2 and O2 on commercial TiO2 in a flow reactor under ambient conditions. The TiO2 photocatalyst offered a high nitrate yield of 1.85 μmol h−1 as well as a solar‐to‐nitrate energy conversion efficiency up to 0.13 %. Background: Due to radical resection, endoprosthetic reconstruction (EPR) is more invasive and increases the risk of dislocation. Therefore, the suitability of EPR for elderly patients with metastatic tumor needs further investigation. Methods: Seventy-one adult patients with isolated proximal femoral bone metastases who underwent EPR were retrospectively analyzed and stratified into two groups: elderly age group (≥60 years, n = 31) and younger age group (<60 years, n = 40). The effect of age on prognosis was analyzed to determine whether EPR is beneficial in elderly patients with proximal femoral metastatic tumor. Cox regression modeling was used to evaluate the effect of different factors on postoperative survival outcomes. Results: Ten (32.26%) and 9 (22.50%) cases of perioperative complications were recorded in the elderly and younger age groups, respectively, with median survival times of 22.00 ± 4.61 months and 23.00 ± 2.85 months, respectively; a log-rank test showed that the difference was not statistically significant (p = 0.657). A Cox regression model was established with patient age as the covariable to evaluate whether it affected postoperative survival. The risk of death due to age was not significant (p = 0.649), but malignancy and femoral metastasis type were significantly associated with postoperative survival (p = 0.001 and p = 0.019). Conclusion: Although older patients have a slightly higher incidence of postoperative complications than younger patients, they do not experience severe adverse consequences. With rigorous selection and careful preparation, EPR is appropriate for the treatment of proximal femoral metastases in older patients, including those with Harrington type I–II acetabular invasion. Ferroelectrics are considered excellent photocatalytic candidates for solar fuel production because of the unidirectional charge separation and above-gap photovoltage. Nevertheless, the performance of ferroelectric photocatalysts is often moderate. A few studies showed that these types of photocatalysts could achieve overall water splitting. This paper proposes an approach to fabricating interfacial charge-collecting nanostructures on positive and negative domains of ferroelectric, enabling water splitting in ferroelectric photocatalysts. The present study observes efficient accumulations of photogenerated electrons and holes within their thermalization length (~50 nm) around Au nanoparticles located in the positive and negative domains of a BaTiO3 single crystal. Photocatalytic overall water splitting is observed on a ferroelectric BaTiO3 single crystal after assembling oxidation and reduction cocatalysts on the positively and negatively charged Au nanoparticles, respectively. The fabrication of bipolar charge-collecting structures on ferroelectrics to achieve overall water splitting offers a way to utilize the energetic photogenerated charges in solar energy conversion. While ferroelectric materials are promising candidates for solar water splitting, most examples show poor activities. Weaker temporal variation of soil moisture can improve crop water use efficiency (WUE), but its physiological mechanism was still unclear. To explore the mechanism, an organized experiment was conducted in Beijing from June to September. From the jointing stage to maturity stage of maize, stable soil moisture (SSM) and fluctuating soil moisture (FSM) were established with Pressure Potential Difference-Crop Initiate Drawing Water (PCI) and manual irrigation (MI), respectively, to explore the physiological mechanism of SSM to improve maize WUE. Among them, PCI treatments were set with 3 pressure differences of -5, -10, and -15 kPa, and MI treatment was watering every 3 days with the irrigation amount of 9.3 mm. The results showed that (1) after water treatment, the average soil water content of PCI-5 kPa, PCI-10 kPa, PCI-15 kPa, and MI treatments were 53% field capacity (FC), 47, 38, and 78% FC, respectively. It was SSM with weak temporal variation under PCI treatments, and FSM with medium temporal variation under MI treatment. (2) PCI treatments reduced the content of proline, malondialdehyde, and abscisic acid in each organ of maize. (3) Compared with FSM 78% FC, the maize root activity at the filling stage of 53% FC SSM and 47% FC SSM increased significantly by 57.1 and 28.6%, respectively, and the carbon isotope discrimination value (Δ13C) in bracts of the two treatments increased by 18.3 and 10.4%, respectively. (4) There was a very significant positive correlation between WUE based on biomass (WUEb) and Δ13C in bracts. In conclusion, a large temporal variation of soil moisture was an important factor that caused water stress in maize. Under SSM treatments, the accumulation of abscisic acid, proline, and malondialdehyde was synergistically reduced. DW871 is a Brassica napus dwarf line with unusual and excellent plant type. To study the dwarf-related genes and their expression patterns of DW871. we took B. napus HW871 as control and selected stem tissues at the bolting stage for transcriptome gene expression analysis. Results showed that there were 8665 significant differentially expressed genes between DW871 and HW881. of which 2582 were up-regulated and 6083 down-regulated. The enrichment analysis of GO could be annotated to 22 subcategories in 3 categories. the enrichment analysis of KEGG was annotated to 295 pathways in 31 subcategories in 5 categories. We screened genes closely related to dwarfing traits from significantly different genes, 43 in pectin degradation, 69 in auxin signal transduction, and annotated 22 in the monolignol biosynthesis. It was found that the dwarfing character of DW871 was related to cell elongation, abnormal cell wall formation and cell division, and obstruction of auxin signal transduction. In particular, in monolignol biosynthesis, it is possible to regulate a series of physiological and biochemical processes related to lignin by regulating the expression of enzymes such as PAL and CCR. The differential genes related to dwarfing traits were screened in this research. It could be hypothesized that the dwarfing mechanism of DW871 involving abnormal auxin response and lignin synthesis, which lead to abnormal cell elongation, growth and cell wall changes, and ultimately lead to the dwarfing of DW871. In this study, a hybrid combination was contracted with F1 of Deyou 5, a Brassica napus variety, as female parent and a new line 273R as male parent. In the F2 generation, 6 mutant plants with obvious shorter plant types at seedling stage were selected. After 5 generations of purification, we bred a stable new germplasm, LSW2018. The germplasm shows dwarf marker characters at seedling stage, with shrunken, thicker and darker leaves, shorter petiole. The growth is lightly weak but stable, plant height is significantly shorter than that of the normal variety. From the budding stage to maturity, LSW2018 gradually turned into a normal shape, with shorter internodes and thicker stalks, stronger lodging resistance, and lower branching positions. The flowering habit, branching angle, inflorescence characteristics, primary and secondary branches, grains, and other characteristics of LSW2018 are not significantly different from those of the homologous normal high-stalk line HSW2018, but the plant height and branch height are extremely different. The average transplanting plant height of LSW2018 is 136.24 cm and the direct seeding is 110.4 cm. In short, LSW2018 is considered to be a new short-stem Brassica napus germplasm suitable for mechanized and light-simplified planting, which might have high utilization value and broad application prospects. LSW2018, a Brassica napus germplasm, has typical "dwarf" character at seedling stage, and the plant is short with thick stem and strong lodging resistance. As an ideal dwarf germplasm resource, LSW2018 is especially suitable for mechanized operation and has important utilization value. In order to explore the breeding advantages, and study the inheritance of dwarf character of LSW2018, 119 normal high-stalk Brassica napus cultivars (lines), 12 Brassica rapta cultivars (lines) and 6 Brassica juncea varieties (lines) were selected to construct cross combinations with LSW2018 (P1), and the populations of F1, F2, F3, aBC1 and bBC1 were analyzed. We studied spectra of the amplified signal from a noncollinear optical parametric amplifier (NOPA) based on a Ti:sapphire laser and BBO crystal gain medium. The signal shows characteristic structures with periodic intensity variations in the signal during the parametric amplification processes in a BBO crystal. This phenomenon is attributed to the stimulated Raman process excited by the pump pulse affected by the phase-matching condition of four-wave mixing. The effect of this stimulated Raman process on optical parametric amplification and on final pulse compression of the signal was analyzed. The results demonstrate that caution must be taken when constructing a NOPA. Specifically, great care must be taken not to use mirrors with non-uniform spectral reflectivity for obtaining a stable pulse in terms of both temporal and spectral shapes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objective: The concept of enhanced recovery after surgery (ERAS) has been proposed to provide guidance for the improved postoperative rehabilitation of patients with occipitocervical region disease (ORD). Methods: This study retrospectively investigated 208 consecutive patients (116 men and 92 women) ranging in age from 22 to 76 years with ORD between July 2014 and June 2017 in our medical center, who were divided into three groups that received different preoperative, intraoperative, and postoperative management plans: traditional group (n = 73), ameliorated group (n = 70), and ERAS group (n = 65). We compiled a range of data relating to demographics and postoperative changes in hemoglobin and albumin, surgery duration, intraoperative blood loss, number of postoperative hospitalization days and expenses, readmission rates, and visual analog scale pain symptoms. Data were statistically evaluated using one‐way analysis of variance with Student–Newman–Keuls‐q post hoc tests or chi‐square tests. Results: There were no significant differences in terms of age (P = 0.235), gender (P = 0.691), body mass index (P = 0.723), American Society of Anesthesiologists grade (0.747), lesion character (P = 0.337) and lesion site (P = 0.957) between the three groups. Within a 6 months follow‐up period, there was no significant difference between the three groups in terms of surgery duration (P = 0.225), blood loss (P = 0.172), changes in hemoglobin (P = 0.255) and albumin (P = 0.178). However, postoperative hospitalization days (P = 0.000), postoperative costs (P = 0.019) and improvement of pain symptoms (P = 0.000) in ERAS group were significantly lower or higher than those in traditional group or ameliorated group, respectively. There were 29 (39.73%), 22 (31.43%), and 13 (20.00%), recorded cases of postoperative complications in traditional group, ameliorated group and ERAS group, respectively; complications in ERAS group were significantly lower than those in other two groups (P = 0.043). Moreover, all of the complications were mitigated effectively by the infusion of fluid, analgesia, treatment of infections, or antiemetic medications. There were 2 (2.74%), 3 (4.29%) and 2 (3.08%), recorded cases of re‐admission in traditional group, ameliorated group and ERAS group, respectively, but there were no statistically significant differences when compared across the three groups (P = 0.866). Conclusions: ERAS can provide benefits when it applied to patients undergoing ORD surgery mainly in terms of reducing postoperative complications, however, ERAS does not increase the economic burden of patients or decrease the risk of readmission. Constructing a high‐quality interface with strong coupling interaction is highly desirable in composite photocatalysts for the efficient interfacial charge transfer. Herein, we prepared black phosphorus quantum dots/CdS (BPQDs/CdS) binary composites with tight interfacial contact via a facile electrostatic self‐assembly approach for efficient photocatalytic H2 evolution. The optimized H2 evolution rate of 3 wt % BPQDs/CdS can reach up to 9.9 mmol g−1 h−1 in lactic acid aqueous solution, 99 and 5.5 times greater than that of pristine BPQDs and CdS, respectively. Benefiting from the strong interface interaction between CdS and BPQDs in well‐contacted BPQDs/CdS composites, efficient charge separation can be achieved, leading to enhanced photocatalytic H2 evolution activity. Notably, the rapid transfer of photogenerated electrons from CdS to BPQDs was unambiguously confirmed by time‐resolved transient absorption spectroscopy. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

BACKGROUND 4‐Nitrophenol, as a representative hazardous contaminant, may pose potential risks to the environment in the process of production, storage, and use. Catalytic hydrogenation reduction offers a promising route to the removal of 4‐nitrophenol by its transformation into the less toxic and biodegradable 4‐aminophenol. In this work, nickel−cobalt bimetal oxide nanostructures were fabricated by the thermal decomposition of metal organic frameworks and cooperatively utilized for the catalytic reduction of 4‐nitrophenol. RESULTS: The as‐fabricated oxide catalysts were characterized and analyzed with several physicochemical measurements, including X‐ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy, thermogravimetry, Fourier‐transform infrared spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy, nitrogen adsorption, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. The catalytic reduction of 4‐nitrophenol was conducted in the presence of the as‐prepared oxide nanostructures with varying Ni/Co ratios to evaluate their catalytic activity. The optimal catalyst (Ni–Co–O) delivered the activity parameter of k'app = 12.0 min−1 mg−1, which was higher than either NiO (2.4 min−1 mg−1) or Co3O4 (3.6 min−1 mg−1). Moreover, the induction time of the 4‐nitrophenol reduction was significantly reduced by using the bimetal oxide catalyst. Based on the surface and electrochemistry analyses, the enhancement of catalytic activity for the Ni–Co bimetal oxide nanostructures was discussed. CONCLUSION: The above results indicated that the cooperation of nickel with cobalt into bimetal oxide nanostructures exhibited an enhanced catalytic activity, which not only promoted the conversion rate of 4‐nitrophenol, but also shortened the reduction induction period. Reported here is the successful synthesis of uniformly sized and ultrafine Cu2O platelets, with a lateral size of <3 nm, by the in situ topotactic reduction of a CuII‐containing layered double hydroxide with ascorbic acid. The supported ultrafine Cu2O offered excellent performance and stability for the visible light driven photocatalytic reduction of N2 to NH3 (the Cu2O‐mass‐normalized rate as high as 4.10 mmol gCu2O−1 h−1 at λ>400 nm), with the origin of the high activity being long‐lived photoexcited electrons in trap states, an abundance of exposed active sites, and the underlying support structure. Loading metal cocatalyst on semiconductor nanoparticles is a general strategy to enhance photocatalytic efficiency, while the consensus of selecting metal cocatalyst matching with semiconductor is still unclear. Herein, we investigated the charge transfer and separation efficiency between ZnO and cocatalysts Ag, Au, and Pt nanoparticles respectively using ultrafast mid‐IR transient absorption spectroscopy. We found that Ohmic contact of Ag with ZnO favoring electron transfer and charge separation, while Schottky junction of Pt or Au with ZnO preventing electron transfer from ZnO to metal. Thus Ohmic contact would be better than Schottky contact. Since photocatalytic efficiency is also determined by chemical catalytic efficiency, we proposed a dual metal cocatalyst strategy for improving the overall photocatalytic efficiency, with the inner metal forming Ohmic contact for efficient charge separation and shuttling electrons and the outer‐layer metal cocatalyst for optimizing the chemical reactivity. The features of the electronic structure of semiconductor photocatalysts are fundamental to understanding the corresponding photocatalytic process. Besides the bandgap and edges, the behavior of photogenerated charge carriers and trap states can also greatly affect the photocatalytic process but it has been less considered during the material design. A previous study (G. Liu, J. Pan, L. Yin et al., Adv. Funct. Mater., 2012, 22, 3233–3238) showed that the interstitial boron on anatase {001} facets can change the photocatalytic preference from reductive H2 evolution to oxidative O2 evolution in the water splitting reaction, interpreted as the change in the band edges. In this work, we employed transient infrared absorption–excitation energy scanning spectroscopy and femtosecond time-resolved mid-infrared spectroscopy to investigate this phenomenon in view of the effect caused by the boron dopant on the photogenerated carrier kinetics and the energy level distribution of the trap states. We found that the surface boron doping eliminates significantly the trap states above the valence band, which improves its photocatalytic oxygen generation. On the other hand, surface boron doping also introduces a substantial amount of electron recombination centers (i.e., Bσ+ in the shell layer). Furthermore, surface boron doping also leads to an inefficient electron transfer from TiO2 to the co-catalyst Pt. Environmental change and human activity can be recorded in sediment cores in aquatic systems such as lakes. Information from such records may be useful for environmental governance in the future. Six sediment cores were collected from Lake Qinghai, China and its sublakes during 2012 and 2013. Measurements of sediment grain-size fractions indicate that sedimentation in the north and southwest of Lake Qinghai is dominated by river input, whereas that in Lake Gahai and Lake Erhai is dominated by dunes. The sedimentation rates in Lake Qinghai were calculated to be 0.101-0.159 cm/y, similar to the rates in other lakes on the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau. Using these data and sedimentation rates from the literature, we compiled the spatial distribution of sedimentation rates. Higher values were obtained in the three main areas of Lake Qinghai: two in river estuaries and one close to sand dunes. Lower values were measured in the center and south of the lake. Measurements of total organic carbon (TOC), total nitrogen (TN), phosphorus concentrations, and TOC/TN ratios in three cores (QH01, QH02, and Z04) revealed four horizons corresponding to times of increased human activity. These anthropogenic events were (1) the development of large areas of cropland in the Lake Qinghai watershed in 1960, (2) the beginning of nationwide fertilizer use and increases in cropland area in the lake watershed after 1970, (3) the implementation of the national program 'Grain to Green,' and (4) the rapid increase in the tourism industry from 2000. Profiles of Rb, Sr concentrations, the Rb/Sr ratio, and grain-size fraction in core Z04 indicate that the climate has become drier over the past 100 years. Therefore, we suggest that lake sediments such as those in Lake Qinghai are useful media for high-resolution studies of regional environmental change and human activity. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
