Settlements are excellent spatiotemporal indicators for studying historical human activities and environmental change. This paper discusses the spatial and temporal changes of sites on the Ordos Plateau in China since the Neolithic Age, based on an analysis of spatiotemporal distribution characteristics of the human settlements. The frequency of human settlements on the Ordos Plateau presented a phased fluctuation process, and the sizes were mainly small and medium. The spatial distribution of human settlements was fractal, and the D value of the aggregation dimension was generally small, indicating that the spatial distribution of the sites was agglomerated. Affected by the desert, the sites were mainly distributed in the south and east of the Ordos Plateau. The spatiotemporal distribution pattern of human settlements in the Ordos Plateau resulted from the combined action of natural and human factors, especially climate change. Moreover, local livelihood patterns significantly affected the frequency of human settlements. The number of human settlements in the farming period was large, and the distribution was concentrated. In contrast, the number of sites in the nomadic period was small and scattered. The central government's policies and the conflicts between farming and nomadic groups further affected the spatiotemporal distribution of human settlements. Desert ecosystems possess an astonishing biodiversity and are rich in endangered species. This study investigated characteristics of species diversity and soil environmental factors in three major deserts of China's Alxa Plateau. The Alxa Desert included 183 plant species belonging to 109 genera and 35 families. The highest numbers of plant species belonged to the Compositae, Gramineae, and Chenopodiaceae families. The research area belongs to the semi-shrub and small semi-shrub deserts in temperate deserts. Species diversity was low, with the Shannon–Wiener index (H′) of shrub-herb = shrub > herb > tree. The Pielou evenness index (E) of shrub herb vegetation was the lowest, indicating more enriched species and fewer sparse species in the community, and that these types of vegetation had the characteristics of rich and obviously dominant species. Redundancy analysis (RDA) and correlations between the comprehensive plant community biodiversity index and soil factors indicated that soil-available phosphorus (NP), organic matter (SOM), and electrical conductivity (EC) had significant impacts on community species diversity. The herbaceous shrub community exhibited the highest H′, Simpson index (D), species richness index (S), soil moisture (SW), and soil nutrients. Planting Calligonum mongolicum, Ephedra membranacea, Artemisia annua, and Phragmites australis to form a typical desert shrub community for community diversity protection is recommended to effectively protect and restore desert ecosystems. Lake Group of Badain Jaran Desert and the recharge sources are hot issues in the academic community. The Mega Dune links the atmospheric precipitation and the lake water. Studying its hydrological characteristics could deepen the understanding of regional lake water cycle, while the plant distribution is an important indicator of the hydrological characteristics of the Mega Dune. This paper took the Tamarix laxa as the research object, measured the water content by drying method, analysed the spatial and temporal variation characteristics of the water content, then explored the indicative significance to the hydrological characteristics of the Mega Dune. The results showed: the soil profile of Tamarix laxa distribution area can be divided into moisture rapid change layer(0 to 60 cm), moisture active layer(60 to 120 cm) and moisture relatively stable layer(120 to 200 cm) according to its moisture characteristics, and the moisture content tends to decrease with increasing depth, and the average moisture content of rapid change layer is 1.69%, which is significantly higher than the other two layers. The water content of the distribution area is 95.83% in the range of 0.50% to 3.00% and the observed maximum value was 4.88%, all of them are less than the field water capacity(5.00%), which indicated that it was difficult to form gravity water in the Tamarix laxa distribution area at the leeward slope of the Mega Dune, but also indicated that the precipitation is difficult to quickly infiltrate to replenish lake water as gravity water for the leeward slope of the Mega Dune. The "arborization" growth characteristics of Tamarix laxa and its special distribution position are not only conducive to its root tiller propagation, but also to the storage and maintenance of water, which maintains its survival and development. Vegetation plays a key role in maintaining ecosystem stability, promoting biodiversity conservation, serving as windbreaks, and facilitating sand fixation in deserts. Based on the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (MODIS NDVI) and climate data, a Theil—Sen median trend analysis combined with the Mann—Kendall test and partial correlation and residual analyses were employed to explore spatiotemporal patterns of vegetation dynamics and key drivers in the Badain Jaran and Tengger deserts and Mu Us Sandy Land. Data were collected during the growing season between 2001 and 2020. Further analyses quantified the relative contribution of climate variation and anthropogenic activities to NDVI changes. Results revealed a predominantly increasing trend for average NDVI. The spread of average annual NDVI and growth trends of the vegetation were determined to be influenced by spatial differences. The area with improved vegetation was greater than that of the degraded region. Climate variability and human activities were driving forces controlling vegetation cover changes, and their effects on vegetation dynamics varied by region. The response of vegetation dynamics was stronger for precipitation than temperature, indicating that precipitation was the main climate variable influencing the NDVI changes. The relative role of human activities was responsible for > 70% of the changes, demonstrating that human activities were the main driving factor of the NDVI changes. The implementation of ecological engineering is a key driver of increased vegetation coverage and has improved regional environmental quality. These results enhance our knowledge regarding NDVI change affected by climate variation and human activities and can provide future theoretical guidance for ecological restoration in arid areas. It is of great significance to study the effects of precipitation events on carbon exchange in the ecosystem for an accurate understanding of the carbon cycle. However, the response of net ecosystem CO2 exchange (NEE) in the desert to precipitation events is elusive. In this study, the NEE in response to precipitation events of varying intensities in the Badain Jaran Desert (BJD) in China was continuously monitored using the eddy covariance (EC) technique. The following results were obtained: (1) The BJD ecosystem was a net CO2 sink throughout the study period, with NEE values of -113.4, -130.7, and -175.4 g C m-2a-1 in 2016, 2018, and 2019, respectively. The total precipitation yielded a higher carbon sequestration capacity in 2019 than in the other two years. In addition, the intensity, time, and frequency of precipitation had significant impacts on CO2; (2) the threshold value of the NEE response to precipitation was ~1.4 mm, indicating the extreme sensitivity of the BJD to precipitation events; (3) the variations in the NEE response to precipitation events conformed to a dual exponential model. The analytical results of the model indicate that precipitation intensity was positively correlated with the carbon sequestration capacity of the desert. The model revealed that the greater the precipitation intensity, the longer it takes the NEE to reach the maximum, and the lengthier the duration of the residual effects. With an increase in the total precipitation and frequency of extreme precipitation events under warm and humidification climates, the carbon sequestration capacity of the BJD will likely be enhanced. The distinct effects of the lakes on the maximum and minimum temperatures cause a large discrepancy in diurnal temperature differences between the dry basin and lake basins. Discussion The above findings demonstrate that daily average temperature and the monthly minimum temperature inside the lake basins are warmer than those in the dry basin, particularly during the cold season. This suggests that, once the lake area reaches 1.91km SP 2 sp , the temperature difference between the lake basin and the dry basin (warm island intensity) becomes significant, but only in winter. Figure 4(a) shows that, the daily maximum temperature is lower in the lake basins than in the dry basin but differences between lake basins and the dry basin are not significant. Ancient cities are excellent spatiotemporal indicators for the study of historical human activities and environmental change. The ancient city of Sanchahe is located at the southern margin of the Mu Us Desert, China. It is an ideal location for studying the complex relationships between historical desertification and human activities. Field observations of the ancient city walls, a well, and a spring, as well as 14C dating, grain size, spatial analysis of archaeological sites, and analyses of historical seismicity, indicated that neotectonics may have contributed to crustal uplift and accelerated fluvial incision of the Wuding River. This rapid incision caused a decline in groundwater levels, which is an important reason for the irreversible environmental degradation around Sanchahe city over the past 800 yr. The spatio-temporal characteristics and driving mechanisms of the Asian summer monsoon (ASM) during the early and middle Holocene remain unclear. Moreover, the timing of maximum monsoon precipitation in the Asian monsoon margin of northwest China during this period is also a subject of considerable debate. Herein, we analyzed phytolith assemblages within 55 calcareous root tube (CRT) samples from the hinterland of the Tengger Desert to quantitatively reconstruct Holocene millennial-scale precipitation changes and discuss the potential forcing mechanisms. Our results revealed that the mean annual precipitation (MAP) was 138 ± 53 to 149 ± 18 mm during 10.0–7.0 cal kyr BP, 179 ± 26 to 192 ± 26 mm during 7.0–5.0 cal kyr BP, and 129 ± 20 to 161 ± 13 mm during 5.0–1.0 cal kyr BP. The quantitative reconstruction results suggested that precipitation in this area was low in the early Holocene, then increased to a maximum in the middle Holocene (30% higher precipitation than present), and gradually decreased in the late Holocene. Maximum monsoon precipitation did not occur until the middle Holocene in this area because the northernmost margin of the ASM reached its northernmost latitude lagging behind its maximum monsoon intensity suppressed by high-northern latitude ice volume forcing during the early Holocene despite high summer insolation. In addition to quantifying the Holocene millennial-scale precipitation changes in the northwestern margin of the ASM, this study also provides new evidence for spatial and temporal variations of the ASM during the Holocene. Accurate estimation of groundwater evapotranspiration (ETG) is the key for regional water budget balance and ecosystem restoration research in hyper-arid regions. Methods that use diurnal groundwater level (GWL) fluctuations have been applied to various ecosystems, especially in arid or semi-arid environments. In this study, groundwater monitoring devices were deployed in ten lake basins at the hinterland of the Badain Jaran Desert, and the White method was used to estimate the ETG of these sites under three main vegetation covers. The results showed that regular diurnal fluctuations in GWL occurred only at sites with vegetation coverage and that vegetation types and their growth status were the direct causes of this phenomenon. On a seasonal scale, the amplitudes of diurnal GWL fluctuations are related to vegetation phenology, and air temperature is an important factor controlling phenological amplitude differences. The estimation results using the White method revealed that the ETG rates varied among the observation sites with different vegetation types, and the months with the highest ETG rates were also different among the sites. Overall, ETG was 600∼900 mm at observation sites with Phragmites australis during a growing season (roughly early May to late October), 600∼650 mm in areas with Achnatherum splendens, and 500∼650 mm in areas with Nitraria tangutorum and Achnatherum splendens. Depth to water table and potential evapotranspiration jointly control the ETG rates, while the influence of these two factors varied, depending on the specific vegetation conditions of each site. This study elucidated the relationship between diurnal GWL fluctuations and vegetation in desert groundwater-recharged lake basins and expanded the application of the White method, providing a new basis for the calculation and simulation of regional water balance. For lakes in desert hinterlands that are not recharged by river runoff, sediment is input solely by wind transport; however, the mechanisms that control the spatial variations in geochemical characteristics of sediments in such lakes remain unclear. Moreover, it remains uncertain whether some element ratios can be used as proxies for environmental characteristics. In this study, 100 surface sediment samples were collected from five lakes in the hinterland of the Badain Jaran Desert, NW China, and examined for their major, trace and rare earth element contents and mineral assemblages. Chemical composition and mineral components of the sediments differed significantly between lakes with different total dissolved solids (TDS). Geochemical characteristics of the lake sediments and their spatial variations are influenced by eolian sands, saline minerals, and sediment sorting. Eolian sands dominate the immobile and nonsoluble elements, whereas authigenic minerals are important in influencing variations in the mobile and soluble elements. Sediment sorting is reflected in the spatial variation of the sediment chemical composition. The positive relationship between the SiO2/Ti of sediment and lake area indicates that changes in the SiO2/Ti ratio can reveal approximate lake area. The Na2O/K2O ratio in sediments can reveal the TDS of salt lakes more effectively than can the Rb/Sr ratio. However, the key factors and mechanisms governing the chemical composition of sediments at different brine evolution stages vary among lakes with different TDS levels, which should be carefully considered when interpreting the environmental significance of the chemical composition as a proxy for paleoenviroment change. In the hinterland of the desert, valuable archives of paleoenvironmental evolution are scarce. Calcareous root tubes (CRTs) have a strong potential for reconstructing paleoenvironmental conditions. It is still unclear, however, whether chemical elements in the CRTs can provide insights into paleoenvironmental conditions. In this study, the major- and trace-element composition of 32 CRT samples from the Alashan Desert were analyzed by X-ray fluorescence spectrometry. Results showed that the elemental composition and content change were controlled by the parent material and climatic conditions at the time of CRT formation. Ca, Mg, and Sr were significantly affected by climate, whereas the enrichment of P is likely related to the growth of plants. Higher (lower) Mg/Ca and Sr/Ca ratios corresponded to higher (lower) effective moisture and a higher (lower) Mg/Sr ratio indicated a higher (lower) temperature during the middle Holocene (8–5 cal ka BP). The reconstruction results for effective moisture were consistent with those in the Asian monsoon margin of northwestern China, which were caused by higher monsoon precipitation and lower evaporation. Water resources play a vital role in ecosystem stability, human survival, and social development in drylands. Human activities, such as afforestation and irrigation, have had a large impact on the water cycle and vegetation in drylands over recent years. The Badain Jaran Desert (BJD) is one of the driest regions in China with increasing human activities, yet the connection between human management and the ecohydrology of this area remains largely unclear. In this study, we firstly investigated the ecohydrological dynamics and their relationship across different spatial scales over the BJD, using multi-source observational data from 2001 to 2014, including: total water storage anomaly (TWSA) from Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment (GRACE), normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) from Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS), lake extent from Landsat, and precipitation from in situ meteorological stations. We further studied the response of the local hydrological conditions to large scale vegetation and climatic dynamics, also conducting a change analysis of water levels over four selected lakes within the BJD region from 2011. To normalize the effect of inter-annual variations of precipitation on vegetation, we also employed a relationship between annual average NDVI and annual precipitation, or modified rain-use efficiency, termed the RUEmo. A focus of this study is to understand the impact of the increasing planted vegetation on local ecohydrological systems over the BJD region. Results showed that vegetation increases were largely found to be confined to the areas intensely influenced by human activities, such as croplands and urban areas. With precipitation patterns remaining stable during the study period, there was a significant increasing trend in vegetation greenness per unit of rainfall, or RUEmo over the BJD, while at the same time, total water storage as measured by satellites has been continually decreasing since 2003. This suggested that the increased trend in vegetation and apparent increase in RUEmo can be attributed to the extraction of ground water for human-planted irrigated vegetation. In the hinterland of the BJD, we identified human-planted vegetation around the lakes using MODIS observations and field investigations. Four lake basins were chosen to validate the relationship between lake levels and planted vegetation. Our results indicated that increasing human-planted vegetation significantly increased the water loss over the BJD region. This study highlights the value of combining observational data from space-borne sensors and ground instruments to monitor the ecohydrological dynamics and the impact of human activities on water resources and ecosystems over the drylands. In the Asian monsoon margin of northwest China, millennial-scale precipitation and effective moisture changes during the Holocene differ from those observed in the primary monsoon area. Whether these differences were caused by a change in precipitation or other hydroclimate factors remains controversial. We selected Huahai Lake, located in the western portion of the Hexi Corridor, at the northwest margin of the Asian monsoon area, to address this question. Using paleoclimate proxies (mineralogical assemblages and immobile elements) and results from a previous study, we inferred hydroclimate changes in this area during the early and middle Holocene (10.5-5.5 cal ka BP). Heavy precipitation and abundant runoff occurred during the early Holocene (10.5-8.8 cal ka BP). Proxies (carbonate content, total organic carbon and C/N) for precipitation minus evaporation (P − E) in the same section, however, revealed low P − E during the early Holocene and highest P − E in the middle Holocene (8.8-5.5 cal ka BP). Therefore, on a millennial timescale, precipitation amount and effective moisture changes were asynchronous during the early and middle Holocene. The precipitation and effective moisture pattern in the study area during that time span was different from patterns in both the Asian monsoon and westerly wind-influenced areas, suggesting an interplay between the two climate features. High precipitation during the early Holocene corresponded to a strengthened Asian monsoon. The mid-latitudes of East Asia are characterized by the interaction between the Asian summer monsoon and the westerly winds. Understanding long-term climate change in the marginal regions of the Asian monsoon is critical for understanding the millennial-scale interactions between the Asian monsoon and the westerly winds. Abrupt climate events are always associated with changes in large-scale circulation patterns; therefore, investigations into abrupt climate changes provide clues for responses of circulation patterns to extreme climate events. In this paper, we examined the time scale and mid-Holocene climatic background of an abrupt dry mid-Holocene event in the Shiyang River drainage basin in the northwest margin of the Asian monsoon. Mid-Holocene lacustrine records were collected from the middle reaches and the terminal lake of the basin. Using radiocarbon and OSL ages, a centennial-scale drought event, which is characterized by a sand layer in lacustrine sediments both from the middle and lower reaches of the basin, was absolutely dated between 8.0–7.0 cal kyr BP. Grain size data suggest an abrupt decline in lake level and a dry environment in the middle reaches of the basin during the dry interval. Previous studies have shown mid-Holocene drought events in other places of monsoon marginal zones; however, their chronologies are not strong enough to study the mechanism. According to the absolutely dated records, we proposed a new hypothesis that the mid-Holocene dry interval can be related to the weakening Asian summer monsoon and the relatively arid environment in arid Central Asia. Furthermore, abrupt dry climatic events are directly linked to the basin-wide effective moisture change in semi-arid and arid regions. Effective moisture is affected by basin-wide precipitation, evapotranspiration, lake surface evaporation and other geographical settings. Carbonate deposition is a main inorganic carbon sink in lakes, which varies depending on climate change and internal lake dynamics. Research on the relationship between lake carbonate and climate will help to understand mechanisms of carbon cycle in lacustrine systems. The approach of this study is to explicitly link carbonate formation with Holocene long-term climate change and lake evolution in a paleo-lake (Zhuye Lake), which is a terminal lake of a typical inland drainage basin in arid China. This paper presents analysis on grain-size, carbonate content and mineralogical composition of sediment samples from different locations of Zhuye Lake. The results show that calcite and aragonite are two main components for the lake carbonate, and the carbonate enrichment is associated with lake expansion during the Late Glacial and early to middle Holocene. Holocene lake expansion in arid regions of China is usually connected with high basin-wide precipitation that can strengthen the basin-wide surface carbonate accumulation in the terminal lake. Modern climate research has shown that the Asian summer monsoon water vapor transport is limited to the eastern part of the Qilian Mountains. On the Holocene millennial-scale, whether the northwest boundary of the summer monsoon varies according to climate change is a key scientific issue. Yanchi Lake is located in the northern Qilian Mountains and the middle of the Hexi Corridor, where the modern climate is less affected by the Asian summer monsoon. It is a key research area for examining the long-term variations of the Asian summer monsoon. Paleoclimatic data, including AMS C dates of pollen concentrates and bulk organic carbon, lithology, grain-size, mineral composition and geochemical proxies were acquired from sediments of Yanchi Lake. The chronological results show that the lower part of the lacustrine section is formed mainly in the Late Glacial and early Holocene period, while the proxies' data indicate the lake expansion is associated with high content of mineral salts. The middle part of this section is formed during the transitional period of the early and middle Holocene. Affected by the reworking effect, the pollen concentrates AMS 14C dates from the middle part of the section are generally older than those from the lower part. Since the mid-Holocene, Yanchi Lake retreated significantly and the deposition rate dropped obviously. The Yanchi Lake record is consistent with the Late Glacial and Holocene lake records in the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau and the climatic records in typical monsoon domain, which indicate the lake expansion and the strong Asian summer monsoon during the Late Glacial and early Holocene. The long-term monsoonal pattern is different from the lake evolution in Central Asia on the Holocene millennial-scale. This study proves the monsoon impacts on the northwestern margin of the summer monsoon, and also proves the fact that the northern boundary of the summer monsoon moves according to millennial-scale climate change. Methods for reconstruction of river runoff have been an important component of paleo-climatology and paleo-hydrology. The lower Heihe River was studied from 2002 to 2008 to reconstruct the annual average runoff at the Zhengyi Gorges hydrological station using measured data and improved water and energy balance equations. The results indicate that the reconstructed annual runoff and the measured runoff values are not equivalent. However, the difference between reconstructed and measured runoff values is within 10 %, which suggests that water and energy balance models can successfully reconstruct runoff from rivers in arid regions. Regional differences imply that parameters must be corrected when applying water and energy balance equations to prevent large errors. In addition, the latent heat of evaporation in arid lakes is greater than their net radiation, according to latent and sensible heat calculations, which demonstrates the existence of the 'cold island effect'. Qinghai Lake and Zhuye Lake, ∼400 km apart, are located in the northwest margin of the Asian summer monsoon. Water of these two lakes mostly comes from the middle and eastern parts of the Qilian Mountains. Previous studies show that the Holocene climate changes of the two lakes implied from lake records are different. Whether lake evaporation plays a role in asynchronous Holocene climate changes is important to understand the lake records. In this paper, we used modern observations beside Qinghai Lake and Zhuye Lake to test the impact factors for lake evaporation. Pan evaporation near the two lakes is mainly related to relative humidity, temperature, vapor pressure and sunshine duration. But temperature has different impacts to lake evaporation of the two lakes, which can affect Holocene millennial-scale lake level changes. In the mid-latitude regions of the Asian continent, Zhuye Lake is located in the northwest margin of the Asian monsoon, where the modern climate is affected by the Asian monsoon and Westerlies. In this study, we investigated the absolutely dated Holocene records in Zhuye Lake for detecting the Holocene climate cycles. Totally, 14 C dates and 6 optically simulated luminescence (OSL) dates are obtained from the QTH01 and QTH02 sections. The proxies of grain-size, total organic carbon content (TOC), C/N and δC are used for wavelet analysis, and the results show obvious ∼256, ∼512 and ∼1024-year climate cycles, which are consistent with the Holocene millennial and centennial scale climate cycles in the typical Asian summer monsoon domain. In different parts of the Zhuye Lake, the Holocene sediments show variable climate cycles that are affected by the lake basin topography. In the Zhuye Lake, the Holocene climate cycles are mainly correlated with the solar-related Asian summer monsoon variability and the North Atlantic ice-rafting events. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In arid regions, because of spatial variability, using single climate records is difficult to reconstruct the past climate change for the drainage basins. Holocene environmental records were collected from the upper, middle and lower regions of the Shiyang River drainage basin in the marginal area of the Asian monsoon (northwest China). The main objective of this paper was to compare the records from the terminal lake and the middle and upper reaches of the basin to study the basin-wide environmental changes. During the early Holocene the vegetation was sparse, and the effective moisture was relatively low in the basin. The Holocene Climatic Optimum started between 7.0 and 8.0 cal ka BP, during which the lake level reached the highest level in the terminal lake; the vegetation density and the effective moisture reached the highest level during the Holocene in the drainage basin. From 4.7 cal ka BP the terminal lake began to shrink, while the vegetation density decreased dramatically. In the middle and upper regions of the drainage, the effective moisture began to decrease since 3.5 cal ka BP, and the arid tendency was earlier in the terminal lake than it was in the middle and upper regions of the drainage basin. During the early Holocene the relatively arid environment was affected by the gradually intensifying East Asian monsoon and the dry westerly winds. The mid-Holocene Optimum benefited from the intensive East Asian monsoon and the humid westerly winds. Then, the East Asian monsoon retreated since the late-Holocene. In the basin the arid tendency may be related to the retracting of the East Asian monsoon. The Badain Jaran Desert, located in the Alxa Plateau, Northwest China, features mega-dunes and a unique dune-lake alternation landscape. This paper presented the aeolian sediment structures of three representative dunes in the Badain Jaran Desert using ground-penetrating radar (GPR). We processed and analyzed the GPR data and investigated the feasibility of using integrated GPR and sedimentological data to reconstruct dunes structure, sedimentary environment and geomorphological evolution. The results show that the internal structures of star dune and transverse dune represent various stages of mega-dune evolution: the main deposition processes of mega-dune are similar to those of transverse dunes but have a more complicated mechanism of sand transport and deposition because of the superimposition of dunes; the upper section of the mega-dune has a structure similar to that of star dune, with vertical aggradations on top. Diffraction hyperbolae in the GPR profile indicates that the presence of ancient dunes characterized by calcareous cementation layers is involved in the maintenance of mega-dunes, and water levels, shown by continuous, sub-horizontal GPR reflections, are supposed to be closely related to mega-dunes and the interdune lakes. Outcrop of wet sand and horizontal stratifications on the GPR image indicate moisture potentials with different levels inside mega-dunes. Mega-dunes in the lake group area of the Badain Jaran Sand Sea, China, are generally taller than dunes in the non-lake group area. This spatial distribution of dune heights may provide a new perspective on the controversy regarding the dunes' formation mechanism. In this study, we calculated the relative heights and slopes of individual dunes based on a digital elevation model, and we confirmed the height distribution of abnormally tall dunes in the lake group area of the sand sea. It was also found that slopes of more than 10° in the lake group area are more common than those in the non-lake group area. Based on meteorological observations, coupled with the measurement of water content in the sand layers, we propose a conceptual model demonstrating that moisture exchange between the lakes and soil via non-rainfall water will humidify dune slopes and form a more favorable accumulation environment for aeolian sand, thus increasing dune heights. Although long-term observations are yet to be carried out, the present study can be used as evidence for understanding the basis of dune formation in the lake group area and assessing groundwater utilization in deserts. The ancient Zhuyeze Lake lies in the east Hexi corridor of Northwest China and it is the interacting belt of the East Asian summer monsoon and the westerly line. The research on paleoclimate of the lake facilitates the understanding of the processes and mechanism of climate change in Northwest China since the Last Deglaciation. Related researches of this area started in the 1960s, and the research on environment changes has become the “hotspot” during the last 10 years. This paper focuses on four sections (Qingtuhu Section, Xiqu Section, Shakengjing Section, Jiutuoliang Section) in ancient Zhuyeze Lake. Much work was done in spot investigation, section strata comparison, geophysical analyses, geochemical analyses and dependable 14C dating in order to retrieve the dry-wet history of climate changes in ancient Zhuyeze Lake since the Last Deglaciation. The main conclusions are as follows: (1) the highest terminal lake level was 1313–1315 m. In Holocene, the highest lake level was 1308–1309 m occurring between 6700–5800 a B.P.. (2) After geophysical and geochemical analyses, high-resolution records of the climate change since the Last Deglaciation were revealed as follows: cold and dry during 15800–13000 a B.P.; cool and wet during 13000–9500 a B.P.; warm and dry during 9500–6700 a B.P.; warm and wet during 6700–4300 a B.P.; cool and wet during 4300–2700 a B.P.; and at last dry during 2700-0 a B.P.. The northeastern part of the Tengger Desert accommodates several lakes. The effect of these lakes on local temperatures is unclear. In this study, the effects of the lakes were investigated using land surface temperature (LST) from MODIS (Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer) data from 2003 to 2018 and air temperatures from meteorological stations in 2017. LST and air temperatures are compared between the lake-group region and an area without lakes to the north using statistical methods. Our results show that the lake-group region is found to exhibit a warm island effect in winter on an annual scale and at night on a daily scale. The warm island effect is caused by the differing properties of the land and other surfaces. Groundwater may also be an important heat source. The results of this study will help in understanding the causative factors of warm island effects and other properties of lakes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A preliminary study on the advance and the retreat of Qingtu Lake and its climatic records of the Holocene lacustrine deposits has been made through comprehensive analysis. The study shows that the modes characteristics of climatic change in Eastern Hexi Corridor was provided with the corresponding relationship of warm-moist and cold-dry during the scale longer than hundred years. As a result of climatic changes and human activities, Qingtu-Lake cycle has undergone four lake-retreated and three lake-advanced stages since 6000 a B. P. Based on the study on lacustrine sedimentary color, grain size, Fe3+/Fe2+ and organic matter, the authors put forward that a warm period existed during the phase of 335–480 A. D. in the studied area. This warm period could be further testified by a lot of evidences obtained from the historical documents and the natural records of Qingtu Lake. In brief, the evolution of lakes in Eastern Hexi Corridor is characterized by sedimentary continuity, fast sedimentary rate and high resolution, it not only indicate the paleoenvironmental and climatic change in Holocene, but also can reflect the intensity of Eastern Asia monsoon. The Badain Jaran Desert (BJD) is characterized by the coexistence of over 110 perennial lakes and thousands of megadunes in its southeast part. Unlike the cold island effect, we found a special phenomenon of the warm island effect in the lake group region of the BJD. However, the concept and formation mechanism remains unclear. In this study, based on observations of land surface processes in the area, we first used the daily mean temperature from 23 automated meteorological stations from 2010 to 2017 to calculate the mean daily temperature (T) ≥ 0 °C, T ≥ 10 °C accumulated temperature and negative accumulated temperature. Furthermore, using the net radiation from two eddy covariance measurement systems, characteristics of the net radiation between the lake and megadunes were analyzed. When comparing observed data in the lake group region to surrounding areas, accumulated temperature from all three meteorological stations in the lake group region were higher; the duration days of T ≥ 0 °C and T ≥ 10 °C were longer, whereas duration days of negative accumulated temperature were shorter. In addition, the initial dates for T ≥ 0 °C and T ≥ 10 °C accumulated temperature were earlier, whereas the end dates were delayed. Variations in heat were observed between stations in the lake group region that may be reflective of microclimate environments between lakes. The authors relate warm island formation in the BJD lake group region to (1) the heat carried by groundwater recharge to the desert lake groups has a great impact on the local temperature. (2) Net heat radiation to the atmosphere through sensible heat flux owing to sparse vegetation in the desert areas. Hence, heat resources are richer in the lake group region. This study aims to improve our understanding of the warm island effect from a comprehensive analysis of its intensity and distribution pattern around the lake group region as compared to its surroundings.
