We have used atomic layer-by-layer molecular beam epitaxy to synthesize coherently lattice-matched thin films of the high-temperature superconductor DyBa2Cu3O7-x with minimal defect density. A systematic set of x-ray reciprocal-space maps reveals tetragonal and orthorhombic structures with different twinning patterns and elucidates their evolution with the thickness, the oxygenation state, and the epitaxial relationship with the substrate. We also show that films with more pronounced orthorhombicity exhibit lower normal-state resistivities and higher superconducting transition temperatures. Thin epitaxial films of TbBaCo2O6-δ cobaltites have been synthesized using pulsed laser deposition. It was found that the film properties are extremely sensitive to the oxygen pressure during deposition, temperature of the substrate, and the cooling rate. Growth parameters were optimized for δ≈0.5 films with ordered Tb and Ba ions, as well as oxygen vacancies. The properties of these c-axis oriented films are similar to bulk TbBaCo2O5.5: they show a metal-insulator phase transition at TMI≈350 K, ferromagnetic order below TC=285 K, and antiferromagnetism at Ti蝶230 K. We establish strain engineering of ruthenium oxides as a method to controllably induce phase transitions between electronic ground states with vastly different electrical and magnetic properties. Specifically, we show that the epitaxial strain acting on Ca2RuO4 thin films on NdCaAlO4 (110), LaAlO3 (100), and LaSrAlO4 (001) substrates induces a transition from the Mott-insulating phase of bulk Ca2RuO4 into a metallic phase. Magnetometry and spin-polarized neutron reflectometry reveal a low-temperature, small-moment ferromagnetic state in Ca2RuO4 films on LaAlO3 (100) and LaSrAlO4(001). Atomically thin films of WSe2 from one monolayer up to 8 layers were deposited on an Al2O3 r-cut (1102) substrate using a hybrid-Pulsed Laser Deposition (PLD) system where a laser ablation of pure W is combined with a flux of Se. Specular X-ray reflectivities of films were analysed and were consistent with the expected thickness. Raman measurement and atomic force microscopy confirmed the formation of a WSe2 monolayer and its spatial homogeneity over the substrate. Grazingincidence X-ray diffraction uncovered an in-plane texture in which WSe2 [1010] preferentially aligned with Al2O3 [1120]. These results present a potential to create 2D transition metal dichalcogenides by PLD, where the growth kinetics can be steered in contrast to common growth techniques like chemical vapor deposition and molecular beam epitaxy. Transition metal oxides are promising candidates for thermoelectric applications, because they are stable at high temperature and because strong electronic correlations can generate large Seebeck coefficients, but their thermoelectric power factors are limited by the low electrical conductivity. We report transport measurements on Ca3Co4O9 films on various perovskite substrates and show that reversible incorporation of oxygen into SrTiO3 and LaAlO3 substrates activates a parallel conduction channel for p-type carriers, greatly enhancing the thermoelectric performance of the film-substrate system at temperatures above 450 °C. Thin-film structures that take advantage of both electronic correlations and the high oxygen mobility of transition metal oxides thus open up new perspectives for thermopower generation at high temperature. In this paper we describe a setup for x-ray scattering experiments on complex fluids using a liquid jet. The setup supports Small and Wide Angle X-ray Scattering (SAXS/WAXS) geometries. The jet is formed by a gas-dynamic virtual nozzle (GDVN) allowing for diameters ranging between 1 μm and 20 μm at a jet length of several hundred μm. To control jet properties such as jet length, diameter, or flow rate, the instrument is equipped with several diagnostic tools. Three microscopes are installed to quantify jet dimensions and stability in situ. The setup has been used at several beamlines performing both SAXS and WAXS experiments. As a typical example we show an experiment on a colloidal dispersion in a liquid jet at the X-ray Correlation Spectroscopy instrument at the Linac Coherent Light Source free-electron laser. Using a complementary combination of x-ray diffraction and atomically resolved imaging we investigated the lattice structure of epitaxial LaNiO3/LaAlO3 superlattices grown on a compressive-strain inducing LaSrAlO4 (001) substrate. A refinement of the structure obtained from the x-ray data revealed the monoclinic I 2/c 1 1 space group. The (Ni/Al)O6 octahedral rotation angle perpendicular to the superlattice plane is enhanced, and the one parallel to the plane is reduced with respect to the corresponding bulk values. High-angle annular dark field imaging was used to determine the lattice parameters within the superlattice unit cell. Coherent X-ray diffraction imaging is a rapidly advancing form of lensless microscopy. The phase information of the diffraction pattern is embedded in a sufficiently sampled coherent diffraction pattern. Using advanced computational methods, this diffraction pattern can be inverted to produce an image of a sample with diffraction-limited resolution. It is attractive to use high-power coherent X-ray beams produced by future X-ray free-electron lasers for imaging nanoscale condensed matter, materials and biological samples. In single crystal La2CuO4+Σ,Σ ≈ 0.015, c-axis interstitial oxygen ordering (staging) in the oxygen-rich phase of the phase-separated sample was observed through satellite peaks in the neutron scattering which first appear at 250 K. If the sample is cooled through the temperature region around 210 K over a period of several hours, these satellite peaks show splitting in the a*-direction. This first-order phase transition involves a periodic one-dimensional modulation of the in-plane order. Microscopic modeling leads to a picture where the excess oxygen, and therefore also the doped holes, order in stripes along the a-direction in addition to staging along the c-direction. This ordering in stripes can be regarded as a continuation of the phase separation but now on a local scale, leading to a local increase in oxygen and hole density. This increase can account for the increase of the superconducting T c of 2.5 K observed in our sample and also for many previously reported annealing experiments. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We have studied the microstructure of LaNiO3-LaAlO3 superlattices using transmission electron microscopy in combination with electron energy loss spectroscopy. In superlattices grown on non-polar SrTiO3 substrates, nanometer-sized NiO precipitates form directly at the interface between the substrate and the initial LaNiO3 layer, while control measurements on polar substrates show no NiO. Because of the drastically different electronic properties of NiO and LaNiO3, such precipitates can strongly affect measurements on atomically thin LaNiO3-based films and multilayers on SrTiO3. In general, polarity-driven secondary phase formation should be carefully evaluated as a possible consequence of the polarity mismatch at metal-oxide interfaces. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
