Aims: To investigate the safety, tolerability, pharmacokinetics (PK) and pharmacodynamics (PD) of BPL-003, a novel intranasal benzoate salt formulation of 5-methoxy- N,N -dimethyltryptamine (5-MeO-DMT), in healthy participants. Methods: In all, 44 psychedelic-naïve participants enrolled in the double-blind, placebo-controlled single ascending dose study (1–12 mg BPL-003). Concentrations of 5-MeO-DMT and its pharmacologically active metabolite, bufotenine, were determined in plasma and urine. PD endpoints included subjective drug intensity (SDI) rating, the Mystical Experience Questionnaire (MEQ-30) and the Ego Dissolution Inventory (EDI). Results: BPL-003 was well tolerated at doses up to 12 mg. There were no serious adverse events (AEs), and most AEs were mild; the most common being nasal discomfort, nausea, headache and vomiting. 5-MeO-DMT was rapidly absorbed and eliminated; the median time to peak plasma concentration was approximately 8–10 min and the mean terminal elimination half-life was <27 min. 5-MeO-DMT systemic exposure increased approximately dose-proportionally, while plasma bufotenine concentrations and urinary excretion of 5-MeO-DMT and bufotenine were negligible. The intensity of the SDI ratings was associated with plasma 5-MeO-DMT concentrations. MEQ-30 and EDI scores generally increased with the BPL-003 dose; 60% of participants had a 'complete mystical experience' at 10 and 12 mg doses. Profound and highly emotional consciousness-altering effects were observed with BPL-003, with a rapid onset and short-lasting duration. Conclusion: The novel intranasal formulation of BPL-003 was well tolerated with dose-proportional increases in PK and PD effects. Aim: This study aimed to investigate the improvement in gait velocity variability after cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) elimination, and the association between gait velocity variability and gait and cognitive impairment in patients with idiopathic normal pressure hydrocephalus. Methods: The gait velocity of 44 patients with idiopathic normal pressure hydrocephalus was measured using the Timed Up and Go Test (TUG) for a total of 10 times over 3 days each before and after CSF elimination. The coefficient of variation (CV) in the time required for the sequence of actions in TUG (TUG‐CV) was calculated using 10 TUG data, and used for measuring intraindividual gait velocity variability. Gait quality was evaluated with the Gait Status Scale Revised (GSSR), and cognitive function was evaluated with the Mini‐Mental State Examination and the Frontal Assessment Battery. Results: The TUG, TUG‐CV, GSSR and Frontal Assessment Battery results improved significantly after CSF elimination. The analyses using pre‐CSF elimination results showed that the TUG‐CV significantly and positively correlated with the TUG and GSSR results, and negatively with Mini‐Mental State Examination results, but not with age and the Frontal Assessment Battery results. The stepwise multiple regression analysis indicates that the TUG, GSSR and Mini‐Mental State Examination results were significant predictors of the TUG‐CV. The analysis using data of change after CSF elimination showed that ΔTUG and ΔGSSR were significant predictors of ΔTUG‐CV. Conclusions: Gait velocity variability improved after CSF elimination, and gait velocity variability was associated with gait disturbances and cognitive impairment in patients with idiopathic normal pressure hydrocephalus. Sparse connectivity of a superconducting quantum computer results in large experimental overheads of SWAP gates. In this study, we consider employing a virtual two-qubit gate (VTQG) as an error suppression technique. The VTQG enables a non-local operation between a pair of distant qubits using only single qubit gates and projective measurements. Here, we apply the VTQG to the digital quantum simulation of the transverse-field Ising model on an IBM quantum computer to suppress the errors due to the noisy two-qubit operations. We present an effective use of VTQG, where the reduction in multiple SWAP gates results in increasing the fidelity of output states. The obtained results indicate that the VTQG can be useful for suppressing the errors due to additional SWAP gates. In our experiments, we have observed one order of magnitude improvement in accuracy for the quantum simulation of the transverse-field Ising model with 8 qubits. Finally, we have demonstrated an efficient implementation of the VTQG by utilizing dynamic circuits. This scheme reduces experimental overheads for implementing m VTQGs from O (10 m) to O (6 m). Mosaic valve shows higher pressure gradient after aortic valve replacement compared to other same size labeled prostheses in postoperative echocardiogram. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the mid-term echocardiogram findings and long-term clinical outcomes of patients receiving a 19 mm Mosaic. Forty-six aortic stenosis patients receiving 19 mm Mosaic and 112 patients receiving either 19 mm Magna or Inspiris, who underwent mid-term follow-up echocardiogram were included in the study. Mid-term hemodynamic measurements evaluated by trans-thoracic echocardiogram and long-term outcomes were compared. Patients receiving Mosaic were significantly older (Mosaic: 76 ± 5.1 years vs. Magna/Inspiris: 74 ± 5.5 years, p = 0.046) and had smaller body surface area (Mosaic: 1.40 ± 0.114m2 vs. Magna/Inspiris: 1.48 ± 0.143m2, p < 0.001). There were no significant differences in comorbidities and medications. Post-operative echocardiogram performed at 1 week after the surgery showed higher maximum pressure gradient in patients receiving Mosaic (Mosaic: 38 ± 13.5 mmHg vs. Magna/Inspiris: 31 ± 10.7 mmHg, p = 0.002). Furthermore, mid-term echocardiogram follow-up performed at median duration of 53 ± 14.9 months after the surgery continuously showed higher maximum pressure gradient in patients receiving Mosaic (Mosaic: 45 ± 15.6 mmHg vs. Magna/Inspiris: 32 ± 13.0 mmHg, p < 0.001). However, there were no significant difference in changes in left ventricular mass from baseline in both groups. Kaplan–Meyer curve also showed no difference in long-term mortality and major adverse cardiac and cerebrovascular event between the two groups. Although the pressure gradient across the valve evaluated by echocardiogram was higher in 19 mm Mosaic compared to 19 mm Magna/Inspiris, there were no significant differences in left ventricular remodeling and long-term outcomes between the two groups. Transient noise appearing in the data from gravitational‐wave detectors frequently causes problems, such as instability of the detectors and overlapping or mimicking gravitational‐wave signals. Because transient noise is considered to be associated with the environment and instrument, its classification would help to understand its origin and improve the detector's performance. In a previous study, an architecture for classifying transient noise using a time–frequency 2D image (spectrogram) is proposed, which uses unsupervised deep learning combined with variational autoencoder and invariant information clustering. The proposed unsupervised‐learning architecture is applied to the Gravity Spy dataset, which consists of Advanced Laser Interferometer Gravitational‐Wave Observatory (Advanced LIGO) transient noises with their associated metadata to discuss the potential for online or offline data analysis. Background: The thromboxane receptor (TP) antagonist NTP42 is in clinical development for treatment of cardiopulmonary diseases, such as pulmonary arterial hypertension. In this randomized, placebo-controlled Phase I clinical trial, NTP42, administered as the oral formulation NTP42:KVA4, was evaluated for safety, tolerability, pharmacokinetics (PK), and pharmacodynamics (PD) in healthy males. Methods: The first-in-human trial had three Parts: A, single ascending dose (SAD) study with seven groups given 0.25–243 mg NTP42:KVA4 or placebo; B, food effect study where one SAD group (9 mg) was also given NTP42:KVA4 or placebo after a high-fat breakfast; C, multiple ascending dose study with three groups given 15–135 mg NTP42:KVA4 or placebo once-daily for 7 days. Results: Seventy-nine volunteers participated. No serious adverse events occurred, where any drug- or placebo-related adverse events were mild to moderate, with no correlation to NTP42:KVA4 dose. NTP42 was rapidly absorbed, yielding dose proportional increases in exposure after single and repeat dosing. PK confirmed that, with a clearance (T1/2) of 18.7 h, NTP42:KVA4 is suited to once-daily dosing, can be taken with or without food, and does not accumulate on repeat dosing. At doses ≥1 mg, NTP42 led to complete and sustained inhibition of thromboxane-, but not ADP-, induced platelet aggregation ex vivo, with direct correlation between NTP42 exposure and duration of PD effects. Conclusion: Orally administered NTP42:KVA4 was well tolerated, with favorable PK/PD profiles and evidence of specific TP target engagement. Background: The assessment of small metastatic liver tumours using dual-energy computed tomography (DECT) has not been fully established. Purpose: To assess the effect of low-keV virtual monochromatic imaging (VMI) with non-contrast and contrast-enhanced DECT on the qualitative and quantitative image parameters of small liver metastases. Material and methods: Two radiologists retrospectively evaluated 92 metastatic liver tumours (5–20 mm) in 32 patients. Non-contrast and contrast-enhanced VMI were reconstructed at seven energy levels (40–100 keV) with 10-keV intervals. Lesion boundary, lesion delineation, image noise, and overall image quality were evaluated using the visual analogue scale. A high subjective score indicates good overall image quality, clear nodal boundaries and delineation, and less noticeable image noise. Subjective scores were compared using the Kruskal–Wallis test. A quantitative analysis involving the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and contrast-to-noise ratio (CNR) was performed. Results: The lesion boundary was highest at 40 keV and significantly improved during the non-contrast portal venous phase compared to that at higher keV (p <.005). The lesion delineation score was significantly higher at 40 keV and tended to decrease at higher keV. Image noise and overall image quality were rated low at low keV; however, those at 80, 90, and 100 keV were rated the highest (p <.005). The CNR and SNR were highest for non-contrast CT at 100 keV. During the portal venous phase, no significant differences were observed in CNR and SNR at each keV. Purpose: To examine the characteristics of drug-loaded superabsorbent polymer microspheres (SAP-MS) such as drug absorption, drug release, diameter, and visibility. Materials and Methods: SAP-MS (HepaSphere150–200 µm; Merit Medical, South Jordan, UT, USA) were suspended in drug solutions: (a) cefazolin, (b) lidocaine, (c) iopamidol and cefazolin, (d) iopamidol and lidocaine, and (e) iopamidol, cefazolin, and lidocaine. The concentrations of drugs were measured, and the amount of each drug absorbed was calculated. Filtered drug-loaded SAP-MS were mixed with saline, and the drug release rates were calculated. The diameter changes of SAP-MS during absorption were observed. Radiography of drug-loaded SAP-MS was evaluated as radiopacity by contrast-to-noise ratio (CNR). Results: The drug concentration did not change during absorption. The release rates increased for 10 min and then came to an equilibrium. The mean amounts of drug absorbed at 180 min and mean release rates at 24 h were (a) cefazolin: 265.4 mg, 64.2%; (b) lidocaine: 19.6 mg, 75.6%; (c) iopamidol: 830.2 mg, 22.5%; cefazolin: 137.6 mg, 21.2%; (d) iopamidol: 1620.6 mg, 78.5%; lidocaine: 13.5 mg, 81.4%; and (e) iopamidol: 643.7 mg, 52.9%; cefazolin: 194.0 mg, 51.6%; lidocaine: 5.3 mg, 58.4%. The diameter of SAP-MS increased for approximately 15 min. Finally, the diameters of SAP-MS were (a) 3.9 times, (b) 5.0 times, (c) 2.2 times, (d) 5.5 times, and (e) 3.6 times larger than the original size. Drug-loaded SAP-MS containing iopamidol were visible under X-ray imaging, with CNRs of (c) 3.0, (d) 9.0, and (e) 4.5. Conclusion: SAP-MS can absorb and release iopamidol, cefazolin, and lidocaine. Genome compaction and activity in the nucleus depend on spatiotemporal changes in the organization of chromatins in chromosomes. However, the direct imaging of the chromosome structures in the nuclei has been difficult and challenging. Herein, we directly visualized the structure of chromosomes in frozen-hydrated nuclei of budding yeast in the interphase using X-ray laser diffraction. The reconstructed projection electron density maps revealed inhomogeneous distributions of chromosomes, such as a 300 nm assembly and fibrous substructures in the elliptic-circular shaped nuclei of approximately 800 nm. In addition, from the diffraction patterns, we confirmed the absence of regular arrangements of chromosomes and chromatins with 400–20 nm spacing, and demonstrated that chromosomes were composed of self-similarly assembled substructural domains with an average radius of gyration of 58 nm and smooth surfaces. Based on these analyses, we constructed putative models to discuss the organization of 16 chromosomes, carrying DNA of 4.1 mm in 800 nm ellipsoid of the nucleus at the interphase. We anticipate the structural parameters on the fractal property of chromosomes and the experimental images to be a starting point for constructing more sophisticated 3D structural models of the nucleus. Chordoma is a rare malignant bone tumor arising from notochordal tissue. Conventional treatments, such as radical resection and high-dose irradiation, frequently fail to control the tumor, resulting in recurrence and re-growth. In this study, genetic analysis of the tumor in a 72-year-old male patient with refractory conventional chordoma of the skull base revealed a high tumor mutational burden (TMB) and mutations in the MSH6 and MLH1 genes, which are found in Lynch syndrome. The patient and his family had a dense cancer history, and subsequent germline genetic testing revealed Lynch syndrome. This is the first report of a chordoma that has been genetically proven to be Lynch syndrome. Chordomas usually have low TMB; however, this is an unusual case, because the TMB was high, and immune checkpoint inhibitors effectively controlled the tumor. This case provides a basis for determining the indications for immunotherapy of chordoma based on the genetic analysis. Purpose: To evaluate the accuracy of needle placement using a three-dimensional (3D) augmented reality (AR) protractor on smartphones (AR Puncture). Materials and Methods: An AR protractor that can be rotated in three directions against the CT plane with angle guidance lines for smartphones was developed. The protractor center can be adjusted to an entry point by manually moving the smartphone with the protractor center fixed at the center of the screen (Fix-On-Screen) or by image tracking with a printed QR code placed at an entry point (QR-Tracking). Needle placement was performed by viewing a target line in the tangent direction with the Bull's eye method. The needle placement errors placed by four operators in six out-of-plane directions in a phantom using a smartphone (iPhone XR, Apple, Cupertino, CA, USA) were compared with two registration methods. Results: No significant difference in the average needle placement error was observed between the Fix-On-Screen and QR-Tracking methods (5.6 ± 1.7 mm vs. 6.1 ± 2.9 mm, p = 0.475). The average procedural time of the Fix-On-Screen method was shorter than that of the QR-Tracking method (71.0 ± 23.9 s vs. 98.4 ± 59.5 s, p = 0.042). Conclusion: The accuracies of out-of-plane needle placements using the 3D AR protractor with the two registration methods were equally high, with short procedure times. Cancer stem‐like cells (CSCs) have a unique translation mode, but little is understood about the process of elongation, especially the contribution of tRNA modifications to the maintenance of CSCs properties. Here, it is reported that, contrary to the initial aim, a tRNA‐modifying methylthiotransferase CDKAL1 promotes CSC‐factor SALL2 synthesis by assembling the eIF4F translation initiation complex. CDKAL1 expression is upregulated in patients with worse prognoses and is essential for maintaining CSCs in rhabdomyosarcoma (RMS) and common cancers. Translatome analysis reveals that a group of mRNAs whose translation is CDKAL1‐dependent contains cytosine‐rich sequences in the 5' untranslated region (5'UTR). Mechanistically, CDKAL1 promotes the translation of such mRNAs by organizing the eIF4F translation initiation complex. This complex formation does not require the enzyme activity of CDKAL1 but requires only the NH2‐terminus domain of CDKAL1. Purpose: A Lactobacillus-dominated microbiota in the endometrium was reported to be associated with favorable reproductive outcomes. We investigated in this study whether 16S ribosomal RNA (rRNA) gene sequencing analysis of the uterine microbiome improves pregnancy outcomes. Methods: This prospective cohort study recruited a total of 195 women with recurrent implantation failure (RIF) between March 2019 and April 2021 in our fertility center. Analysis of the endometrial microbiota by 16S rRNA gene sequencing was suggested for all patients who had three or more failed embryo transfers (ETs). One hundred and thirty-one patients underwent microbial 16S rRNA gene sequencing (study group) before additional transfers, while 64 patients proceeded to ET without that analysis (control group). The primary outcome was to compare the cumulative clinical pregnancy rate of two additional ETs. Main results: An endometrial microbiota considered abnormal was detected in 30 patients (22.9%). All but one of these 30 patients received antibiotics according to the bacterial genus detected in their sample, followed by treatment with probiotics. As a result, the cumulative clinical pregnancy rate (study group: 64.5% vs. control group: 33.3%, p = 0.005) and the ongoing pregnancy rate (study group: 48.9% vs. control group: 32.8%, p = 0.028) were significantly increased in the study group compared to the control group. Conclusion: Personalized treatment recommendations based on the microbial 16S rRNA gene sequencing of the uterine microbiota can improve IVF outcomes of patients with RIF. Metal–metal interactions through graphene can result in interesting phenomena, although the effective range has not yet been studied in detail. This work investigated these interactions by evaluating the contact angles of Cu particles on graphene grown on a Pd substrate. Thermally-induced variations in the morphology of the particles were assessed using in situ scanning electron microscopy, and such changes were also evaluated by conducting molecular dynamics calculations. The contact angle exhibited a marked decrease in going from graphene multi-layers to a mono-layer. Let M be a connected compact oriented surface with one boundary component. A C ∞ map f : M → R 2 is weakly admissible if it behaves locally like a stable map on a neighbourhood of the boundary ∂ M of M. The notions of the half boundary winding number of a weakly admissible C ∞ map M → R 2 and weakly-admissibly homotopic among weakly admissible C ∞ maps M → R 2 are introduced. Then, we show that weakly admissible C ∞ maps f 0 and f 1 : M → R 2 are weakly-admissibly homotopic if and only if the half boundary winding number of f 0 coincides with that of f 1 . Apathy is frequently observed in idiopathic normal pressure hydrocephalus (iNPH) and worsens cognitive impairment and gait disturbance. In this study, we evaluated the regions associated with apathy in iNPH using statistical imaging analysis on the whole brain, both in terms of cerebral blood flow and gray matter volume. Twenty-seven patients with iNPH were assigned to two groups based on their scores on the neuropsychiatric inventory items related to apathy; 18 patients were assigned to the group with apathy (iNPH + APA) and 9 to the group without apathy (iNPH − APA). The magnetic resonance images and cerebral blood flow single-photon emission computed tomography data of the two groups were compared using statistical parametric mapping 12. The regional gray matter volume of the right precuneus was significantly larger in the iNPH + APA group than in the iNPH − APA group, but the regional cerebral blood flow in any region of the brain was not significantly different between the two groups. These results suggested that the larger gray matter volume, which is thought to reflect gray matter compression, in the precuneus might be involved in apathy in iNPH. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Introduction: The most detrimental factor preventing the use of oral iron in the treatment of iron deficiency anemia is gastrointestinal side effects accompanied by nausea and vomiting. Anorexia is a known secondary effect of nausea and vomiting. The important gastrointestinal signaling molecule 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT) is critically involved in not only physiological function but also nausea and vomiting. The present study was designed to compare the effects of the administration of sodium ferrous citrate (SF) and ferric citrate hydrate (FC) to rats on anorexia and hyperplasia of enterochromaffin cells, which mainly synthesize and store 5-HT. Methods: Rats received either SF (3 or 30 mg/kg/day) or FC (30 mg/kg/day) orally for 4 days. Food and water intakes were measured every 24 h during the study. At 96 h after the first administration of the oral iron preparation, the duodenal and jejunal tissues were collected for analysis. Enterochromaffin cells were detected by immunohistochemical analysis. Results: Administration of 3 mg/kg SF had no effect on anorexia but led to increased hyperplasia of enterochromaffin cells in the duodenum (p < 0.1). Administration of 30 mg/kg SF significantly decreased food and water intakes and significantly increased hyperplasia of enterochromaffin cells in the duodenum and jejunum. Alternatively, administration of 30 mg/kg FC had no significant effect on food and water intakes or hyperplasia of enterochromaffin cells. Conclusion: The lower impact on the hyperplasia of enterochromaffin cells of FC compared to SF may contribute to the maintenance of rats' physical condition. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Electrical and thermal circuit analyses on a random stick network were combined to develop the simulation method to calculate the thermoelectric response of carbon nanotube (CNT) films. The experimental results were successfully reproduced with respect to the gate-voltage dependence of both the electrical conductivity and Seebeck coefficient of CNT-film field effect transistors for various mixing ratios of semiconducting/metallic CNTs. The Seebeck coefficient increases monotonically with the semiconducting CNT content and the rate of increase in the Seebeck coefficient is strongly dependent on the chemical potential (i.e. the carrier density). The thermoelectric response of aligned CNT films was also investigated. The Seebeck coefficient of an aligned CNT film was determined to be isotropic (i.e. independent of measurement in the directions parallel and perpendicular to the CNT alignment), although the electrical conductivity in the direction parallel to the CNT alignment was much larger than that in the perpendicular direction. Rapid deployment valve has expanded surgical indication for high-risk patients with aortic stenosis despite its accommodated risk for conduction disorder (CD). The purpose of this study was to evaluate the degree of oversizing in association with postoperative CD. During June 2019 to September 2021, 25 patients underwent aortic valve replacement with Edwards INTUITY. Device size selection was evaluated intraoperatively using provided sizers. Oversizing was evaluated retrospectively by measuring the difference of the dimension of the annulus and left ventricular outflow tract (LVOT) compared to the dimensions of the device used by preoperative-computed tomography. Although there was no incidence of pacemaker implantation, seven patients (28.0%) experienced CD after surgery. There was no difference in device area and annulus area (CD: − 37 ± 22.7 mm2 vs. no CD: − 56 ± 63.6 mm2, p = 0.47), and device circumference and annulus circumference (CD: − 4.4 ± 2.77 mm vs. no CD: − 6.9 ± 5.60 mm, p = 0.26) in patients with and without CD. However, there was a significant difference in area of the device skirt and sub-annular area at the LVOT (CD: 114 ± 28.4 mm2 vs. no CD: − 8 ± 80.0 mm2, p < 0.001), and circumference of device skirt and the LVOT (CD: 3.9 ± 2.08 mm vs. no CD: − 4.6 ± 5.24 mm, p < 0.001) between the two groups. Receiver operating characteristic curve analysis showed that an area difference of 77.7 mm2 and circumference difference of 0.91 mm at LVOT were associated with postoperative CD with specificities of 0.83, 0.78 and sensitivity of 1.0, 1.0, respectively. Preoperative measurement of the LVOT may be useful in evaluating the risk of postoperative CD in patients receiving rapid deployment valve. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Excavated rock produced during tunnel construction projects in volcanic areas and sedimentary rock of marine origin pose the potential hazard of introducing naturally occurring arsenic (As) into the surrounding soils and groundwater. Thus, appropriate management and/or countermeasures against As mobility is required by comprehending the leaching characteristics of the As in excavated and sedimentary rock. This study focused on the Neogene Miocene sedimentary rock of marine origin that is widely distributed between Shin-Hakodate-Hokuto and Oshamambe Stations along the Hokkaido Shinkansen in Hokkaido, Japan. The probability distribution of the leaching concentration of As from the rock excavated from the tunnels between the above stations was evaluated via batch leaching tests using crushed rock as a countermeasure against the rock containing naturally occurring toxic elements. A statistical evaluation of this probability distribution was conducted using a vast amount of test results. The results showed that the As leaching concentration followed a logarithmic normal distribution depending on the geological formation. The concentration was influenced by various factors, including the As content, key chemical composition in the rock, such as calcium (Ca), iron (Fe), and sulfur (S), as well as the pH and electrical conductivity (EC) in the leachate. In addition, the thickness of the overburden was found to impact the As leaching concentration. These results suggest that reasonable countermeasures against the risks of As leaching into the surrounding environment can be devised by considering the probability distribution of the As leaching concentration. In the data obtained by laser interferometric gravitational wave detectors, transient noise with non-stationary and non-Gaussian features occurs at a high rate. This often results in problems such as detector instability and the hiding and/or imitation of gravitational-wave signals. This transient noise has various characteristics in the time–frequency representation, which is considered to be associated with environmental and instrumental origins. Classification of transient noise can offer clues for exploring its origin and improving the performance of the detector. One approach for accomplishing this is supervised learning. However, in general, supervised learning requires annotation of the training data, and there are issues with ensuring objectivity in the classification and its corresponding new classes. By contrast, unsupervised learning can reduce the annotation work for the training data and ensure objectivity in the classification and its corresponding new classes. In this study, we propose an unsupervised learning architecture for the classification of transient noise that combines a variational autoencoder and invariant information clustering. To evaluate the effectiveness of the proposed architecture, we used the dataset (time–frequency two-dimensional spectrogram images and labels) of the Laser Interferometer Gravitational-wave Observatory (LIGO) first observation run prepared by the Gravity Spy project. The classes provided by our proposed unsupervised learning architecture were consistent with the labels annotated by the Gravity Spy project, which manifests the potential for the existence of unrevealed classes. Induced smectic phases of 5CB-EBBA binary mixtures were investigated with respect to the structures, stabilities, and molecular motion. The highest stability of the ordered smectic phase was obtained when 5CB and EBBA were mixed at 1:2. At the same ratio, the transferred charges between 5CB and EBBA took the maximum, indicating the direct correlation of the induced phase to the charge-transfer interaction. Whereas, the molecular motion monotonically slowed down with increasing EBBA, which is ascribed to the decrease of the free volume. On the basis of the Kubo–Luttinger linear response theory combined with the scaling theory of Anderson localization predicting the energy dependence of localization length near the mobility edge, we have studied the thermoelectric response of a disordered system exhibiting Mott variable-range hopping (VRH). We found that the low-temperature Seebeck coefficient for VRH conduction in a d-dimensional system varies as S ∝ Td/(d+1), which is different from the widely used expression, S ∝ T(d−1)/(d+1), based on the energy-independent localization length. Purpose: This study aims to introduce a new handheld device application for noncontact and real-time measurements of the angle of a biopsy needle using augmented reality (AR) image tracking technology. Furthermore, this study discusses the methods used to optimize the related coordinate design for computed tomography (CT)-guided biopsy procedures. Methods: An in-house noncontact angle measurement application was developed using AR platform software. This application tracks the position and direction of a printed texture located on the handle of a biopsy needle. The needle direction was factorized into two directions: tilting or rolling. Tilting was defined following the tilting of the CT gantry so that rolling would match the angle measured in CT images. In this study, CT-guided tumor biopsies were performed using a conventional guiding method with a protractor. The true value of needle rolling was measured by CT imaging and was then compared to the rolling measurement provided by the application developed in the current study using a mobile phone. Results: This study enrolled 18 cases of tumor biopsy (five renal tumors, five lung tumors, four retroperitoneal tumors, one soft tissue tumor, one thyroid tumor, one mesentery tumor, and one bone tumor). The measurement accuracy was − 0.2°, which was the average difference between AR and CT, and the measurement precision was 2.0°, which was the standard deviation of the difference between AR and CT measurements. The coefficient of determination (R2) was 0.996. Conclusion: The noncontact needle measurement software using AR technology is sufficiently reliable for use in clinical settings. Purpose: To develop and assess the accuracy of a mixed reality (MR) needle guidance application on smartglasses. Materials and Methods: An MR needle guidance application on HoloLens2, without pre-procedural CT image reconstruction or import by manually matching the spatial and MR coordinate systems, was developed. First, the accuracy of the target locations in the image overlay at 63 points arranged on a 45 × 35 × 21 cm box and needle angles from 0° to 80°, placed using the MR application, was verified. The needle placement errors from 12 different entry points in a phantom by seven operators (four physicians and three non-physicians) were compared using a linear mixed model between the MR guidance and conventional methods using protractors. Results: The average errors of the target locations and needle angles placed using the MR application were 5.9 ± 2.6 mm and 2.3 ± 1.7°, respectively. The average needle insertion error using the MR guidance was slightly smaller compared to that using the conventional method (8.4 ± 4.0 mm vs. 9.6 ± 5.1 mm, p = 0.091), particularly in the out-of-plane approach (9.6 ± 3.5 mm vs. 12.3 ± 4.6 mm, p = 0.003). The procedural time was longer with MR guidance than with the conventional method (412 ± 134 s vs. 219 ± 66 s, p < 0.001). Conclusion: MR needle guidance without pre-procedural CT image import is feasible when matching coordinate systems, and the accuracy of needle insertion is slightly better than that of the conventional method. Hemorrhage arising from the coronary sinus is very rare and can be lethal. It has historically been treated surgically. The present patient had coronary sinus rupture secondary to esophageal cancer and an abscess in the pericardium. Due to her poor general status, this patient was contraindicated for surgery and underwent endovascular therapy. The hemorrhage was treated by stent graft deployment and the patient was temporarily discharged. Two months later, CT showed that the stent graft was occluded by thrombosis. Glioblastoma is a glioma characterized by highly malignant features. Numerous studies conducted on the relationship between glioblastoma and the microenvironment have indicated the significance of tumor-associated macrophages/microglia (TAMs) in glioblastoma progression. Since interleukin (IL)-1β secreted by TAMs has been suggested to promote glioblastoma growth, we attempted to elucidate the detailed mechanisms of IL-1β in glioblastoma growth in this study. A phospho-receptor tyrosine kinase array and RNA-sequencing studies indicated that IL-1β induced the activation of signal transducer and activator of transcription-3 and nuclear factor-kappa B signaling. Glioblastoma cells stimulated by IL-1β induced the production of IL-6 and CXCL8, which synergistically promoted glioblastoma growth via signal transducer and activator of transcription-3 and nuclear factor-kappa B signaling. By immunohistochemistry, IL-1β expression was seen on TAMs, especially in perinecrotic areas. These results suggest that IL-1β might be a useful target molecule for anti-glioblastoma therapy. Background: Endovascular treatment of aortic aneurysm is associated with an increase in pulse wave velocity (PWV) after surgery. However, the effect of different types of endovascular devices on PWV at different sites of the thoracic aorta remains unclear. Objectives: The purposes of this study were (1) to investigate the changes in PWV after endovascular treatment of thoracic aortic aneurysm; (2) to evaluate whether there is a difference in the changes in PWV at different treatment sites; and (3) to evaluate the effect of treatment length on changes in PWV. Methods: From July 2008 to July 2021, 276 patients underwent endovascular treatment of the true thoracic aortic aneurysm. Of these patients, 183 patients who underwent preoperative and postoperative PWV measurement within 1 year of surgery were included in the study. The treatment length index was calculated by treatment length divided by the height of the patients. Results: Five different types of endovascular devices were used (Najuta, Kawasumi Laboratories, Inc., Tokyo, Japan; TAG, W.L. Gore & Associates, Inc., AZ, USA; Relay, Bolton Medical, Inc., FL, USA; Talent/Valiant, Medtronic, MN, USA; and Zenith, Cook Medical, IN, USA). There was no significant change in PWV in patients receiving Najuta (Before: 2,040 ± 346.8 cm/s vs. After: 2,084 ± 390.5 cm/s, p = 0.14). However, a significant increase was observed in other devices: TAG (Before: 2,090 ± 485.9 cm/s vs. After: 2,300 ± 512.1 cm/s, p = 0.025), Relay (Before: 2,102 ± 465.3 cm/s vs. After: 2,206 ± 444.4 cm/s, p = 0.004), Valiant (Before: 1,696 ± 330.2 cm/s vs. After: 2,186 ± 378.7 cm/s, p < 0.001), and Zenith (Before: 2,084 ± 431.7 cm/s vs. After: 2,321 ± 500.6 cm/s, p < 0.001). There was a significant increase in PWV in patients treated from aortic arch (Before: 2,006 ± 333.7 cm/s vs. After: 2,132 ± 423.7 cm/s, p < 0.001) and patients treated from descending thoracic aorta (Before: 2,116 ± 460.9 cm/s vs. After: 2,292 ± 460.9 cm/s, p < 0.001). Multivariate analysis showed that treatment site was not an independent factor associated with changes in PWV. However, Najuta (Coef −219.43, 95% CI −322.684 to −116.176, p < 0.001) and treatment index (Coef 147.57, 95% CI 24.826 to 270.312, p = 0.019) were independent factors associated with changes in PWV. Conclusion: Najuta did not show a significant increase in PWV, while other commercially available devices showed a significant increase. The treatment site did not have a different effect on PWV. We theoretically investigated thermoelectric (TE) effects in bilayer graphene (BLG) in the presence of a vertical electric field E⊥ based on linear response theory combined with a Green's function technique. We found that the room-temperature Seebeck coefficient S and power factor PF for a fixed E⊥ have maximum values (Smax and PFmax) at certain chemical potentials, and that both Smax and PFmax monotonically increase with increasing E⊥ in the weak-E⊥ region. Moreover, we analyzed recent experiments on the chemical potential dependence of S and PF of BLG with E⊥ = 0 finding that experimental results are nicely reproduced by introducing the energy-dependent relaxation time τ(ε) = τ(∞) + A/|ε|r where ε = 0 is the charge-neutral point. By applying the energy-dependent relaxation time to the finite E⊥ cases, we predict PFmax ∼ 20 mW/(K2 m) at 300 K when E⊥ = 0.35 V/nm, which is approximately three times larger than that in the case of E⊥ = 0. The eruption of the Tambora volcano in 1815 was initiated by two precursory Plinian falls and formed two generations of pyroclastic density current (PDC) deposits. In this study, we found slight changes in phenocrysts (modal mineralogy, content, and size), bulk-rock and feldspar microlite chemical compositions, and bubble and microlite number densities through the stratigraphic position. Plinian fall units are characterized by a lower phenocryst abundance (avg. of 5.1%), smaller phenocryst size (avg. of 0.06 mm2), and higher silica content (bulk-rock, 58–58.5 wt.%). The PDC deposits are characterized by a relatively higher crystal abundance (avg. of 12.1%), larger phenocryst sizes (avg. of 0.13 mm2), and lower silica content (bulk-rock, 56.7–57.9 wt.%). Therefore, the deposit stratigraphy and analyses suggest that phenocryst stratification in the magma chamber was established prior to the 1815 eruption and was thus responsible for yielding a slight contrast in bulk compositions. Feldspar microlite moves toward slightly more albitic compositions from Plinian falls to the PDCs, suggesting a slight decrease in the initial melt temperature from the upper to the lower magma chamber portion. Because the Plinian eruptions extracted the hottest magma, the degree of supercooling became low, and consequently yielded microlite-poor juveniles. By contrast, the PDCs experienced a larger degree of supercooling because the temperature was relatively low, thus yielding microlite-rich juveniles. Moreover, such temperature stratification coupled with the evidence of homogeneous melt composition (58.5–58.9 wt.% SiO2) and the minor evidence of crystal mush (at most 27%) might suggest that the Tambora case is still in the early stage of magmatic evolution under cooling from the surrounding rocks. The loss‐of‐function variants of the human asparagine synthetase (ASNS) gene cause asparagine synthetase deficiency (ASNSD). Diagnosis of ASNSD requires genetic tests because a specific biochemical diagnostic for ASNSD is not available. There are a few reports describing the functional evaluation of ASNS variants. Therefore, in vitro methods are needed to evaluate the detected variants in patients. In this report, five types of human ASNS proteins (wild‐type and our reported four variants: p.Leu145Ser, p.Leu247Trp, p.Val489Asp, and p.Trp541Cysfs*5) were expressed in silkworm using a baculoviral expression system. An enzymatic activity assay of ASNS was performed, and the concentration of asparagine by ninhydrin and High Performance Liquid Chromatography methods using the purified recombinant proteins was measured. We established ASNS deficient HEK293 cells using the CRISPR/Cas9 method and evaluated the growth of cells without asparagine after transduction of ASNS variants with a lentiviral expression system. The four ASNS variants displayed significantly low enzymatic activity. The ASNS deficient HEK293 cells transduced with wild‐type ASNS grew without asparagine, whereas cells transduced with the variants did not grow or showed significantly slower growth than cells transduced with wild‐type ASNS. Herein, we established a method for evaluating the enzymatic activity of the recombinant human ASNS variants. The results of the cell‐based assay corroborated the results of the enzymatic activity. We theoretically and computationally examined carrier localization in semiconducting edge-disordered graphene nanoribbons (ED-GNRs) with sub-100nm lengths that correspond to the typical gate length for field-effect transistors. We numerically found that the localization length of ED-GNRs is proportional to the square of ribbon width and inversely proportional to the edge-disorder concentration. Mt. Fuji is an active basaltic volcano near the Tokyo metropolitan area; future eruptions could thus have serious nationwide impacts. To better understand recent volcanism at Fuji Volcano, we here clarify temporal variations of eruption rate and magma composition since 5.6 ka based on time-series volumetric and geochemical data of eruptive products in a new stratigraphic sequence. Volcanic activity during the studied period consisted of (i) the emission of many lava flows that formed a new volcanic edifice between 5.6 and 3.45 ka, (ii) a period dominated by explosive events both at the summit and on the flanks of the volcano between 3.45 and 2.25 ka, and (iii) a period dominated by flank fissure eruptions since 2.25 ka. The eruption rate (dense-rock equivalent, DRE) was 3.5 km3 DRE/kyr during the edifice-building period, decreased to 0.8 km3 DRE/kyr during the explosive period, and then increased to 2.0 km3 DRE/kyr since 1.5 ka. Erupted magmas were dominantly basaltic and geochemically similar through time, except for increased Sr contents and decreased Ca/Sr ratios during the explosive period. Similarly, the geochemical properties of the parental magmas did not change greatly, although the Sr contents and Ca/Sr ratios of magmas erupted during the explosive period reflect the delayed fractionation of plagioclase due to the increased water contents of the parental magmas at that time. Purpose: Augmented reality (AR) technology improves the learning process in interventional radiology. This study hypothesized that using AR to train for central venous access is superior to using ultrasound alone. Methods: This study used an AR central venous catheterization phantom with an internal jugular vein (IJV) and subclavian vein (SCV) made of resin body and soft tubing. Ten radiologists attempted to punctuate, using needle placement simulation, under three conditions (ultrasound-, augmented reality-, and ultrasound and AR-guided methods; US-only, AR-only, and US+AR, respectively) using a smart-glass device (HoloLens, Microsoft, Redmond, WA, USA). Subjective (anatomical understanding and self-confidence for procedure) and objective evaluations (optimized needle position and time) were recorded for each condition. Results: The subjective IJV evaluation showed no difference among the guiding methods (p = 0.26 and p = 0.07 for anatomical understanding and self-confidence for procedure, respectively). Conversely, there were significant improvements in subjective and objective evaluations for SCV using the AR-only and US+AR methods (p < 0.05) and US+AR method (p < 0.05), respectively. The AR-only method reduced the time required to fix the needle position to puncture the SCV (p < 0.05), but its objective evaluation did not improve compared with the US-only method (p = 0.20). Conclusion: Adding the AR-guided method to the US-guided method improved subjective and objective evaluations in the SVC procedure. The structural flexibility at three substitution sites in LaFeAsO enabled investigation of the relation between superconductivity and structural parameters over a wide range of crystal compositions. Substitutions of Nd for La, Sb or P for As, and F or H for O were performed. All these substitutions modify the local structural parameters, while the F/H-substitution also changes band filling. It was found that the superconducting transition temperature T c is strongly affected by the pnictogen height h Pn from the Fe-plane that controls the electron correlation strength and the size of the d xy hole Fermi surface (FS). We have theoretically investigated thermoelectric (TE) effects of narrow-gap single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) with randomly substituted nitrogen (N) impurities, i.e., N-substituted \((20,0)\) SWCNTs with a band gap of 0.497 eV. For such a narrow-gap system, the thermal excitation from the valence band to the conduction band contributes to its TE properties even at the room temperature. In this study, the N-impurity bands are treated with both conduction and valence bands taken into account self-consistently. We found the optimal N concentration per unit cell, copt, which gives the maximum power factor (PF) for various temperatures, e.g., PF = 0.30 W/K2 m with copt = 3.1 × 10−5 at 300 K. In addition, the electronic thermal conductivity has been estimated, which turn out to be much smaller than the phonon thermal conductivity, leading to the figure of merit as ZT ∼ 0.1 for N-substituted \((20,0)\) SWCNTs with copt = 3.1 × 10−5 at 300 K. The 2.9‐Ma Hotokezawa Ignimbrite, which was ejected from the Aizu caldera cluster in the northeast Japan arc, is a typical monotonous intermediate ignimbrite, with 40–50 vol% crystals and an eruptive volume of >140 km3 dense‐rock equivalent. This ignimbrite filled Hiwada caldera and was deformed by post‐caldera plutonic intrusions that formed a resurgent dome. The Hotokezawa Ignimbrite is a calc‐alkaline, medium‐K dacite to rhyolite with SiO2 contents of 67.9–71.3 wt%, and has homogeneous trace‐element abundances and Sr–Nd isotopic ratios. These geochemical features suggest that the Hotokezawa magma was formed by partial melting of amphibolitic crustal rocks. This crystal‐rich magma did not appear during the post‐caldera stage. Therefore, it is plausible that the chamber of eruptible magma was emptied by the caldera‐forming eruption. In contrast, post‐caldera plutonic rocks exhibit a variety of compositions and have a clear SiO2 gap corresponding to the caldera‐forming magma: the early pluton (tonalite) and later ones (quartz porphyry, granite porphyries, and granite) contain 62.0–66.6 and 71.2–76.5 wt% SiO2, respectively. The tonalite and the Hotokezawa Ignimbrite form a continuous trend in their major‐element variations. The Sr–Nd isotopic ratios of the ignimbrite and tonalite overlap, but those of the porphyries and granite are more enriched. The early tonalite represents the more basic part of the Hiwada caldera system that was held in small pockets separate from the main magma chamber, because its trace‐element abundances are varied and distinct from those of the Hotokezawa Ignimbrite. The distinct compositional change from the Hotokezawa Ignimbrite to the late porphyries and granite indicates that the partial melting crust generating felsic magma was renewed by the subsequent intrusion of the mantle melts. The new felsic magma ascended through subsidence‐related faults into the shallow caldera system and emplaced as laccoliths forming the resurgent dome. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We present a theoretical study on inelastic transient electrical currents and the effects of phonon heating in a single-level quantum dot system weakly coupled to a localized vibration degree of freedom, using the nonequilibrium Green's function method under the wide-band-limit and the lowest-order-expansion approximations. The energy transfer between electron and phonon systems is evaluated using both approximations, which separately are exact in the limits of the equilibrium state (t < 0) and steady state (t→∞). The time-dependent phonon number, which determines the system temperature and heating effects on the inelastic current, is calculated using a phenomenological method employing the time-dependent power transfer. The two approximations are shown to provide qualitatively similar dynamical behaviors for the system temperature, which can be grouped under two responses: if the energy corresponding to the applied bias voltage is smaller than or equal to the phonon energy, the temperature first increases because of phonon emission, and then decreases because of phonon absorption; alternatively, if the energy corresponding to the bias voltage is larger than the phonon energy, the temperature increases monotonically until a steady state is reached. The total electrical current is suppressed by phonon heating, while heat transferring between dot and environment mitigates the effects of such heating. Purpose: To assess the safety and feasibility of unilateral double femoral venous access including double sheath insertion via a single-hole method (two-in-one method) for adrenal venous sampling (AVS). Materials and methods: Two 5-Fr sheaths were percutaneously inserted into a single femoral vein for AVS in 324 patients. Two needles were inserted sequentially in tandem under ultrasound guidance; furthermore, two sheaths were individually inserted (two-in-two method) if both punctures were successfully achieved. In the presence of a single puncture, two sheaths were inserted through two guidewires and a temporarily inserted sheath (two-in-one method). This protocol was repeated until two sheaths were successfully inserted. Thus, two sheaths were inserted with the two-in-one method in 56 patients (17.3%) and two-in-two method in 268 patients (82.7%). Results: No significant differences in the technical success rates of AVS were observed (p = 0.067–0.647). Minor groin hematoma was observed more frequently in the two-in-one than in the two-in-two method (8.9% vs. 2.6%, p = 0.039). No major groin hematoma, deep venous thrombosis, or pulmonary embolization was observed. The mean number of needle puncture was 2.5 ± 1.3 and duration of inserting two sheaths 5.1 ± 3.9 min. Cementitious materials are commonly used to reinforce the bearing capacity of silty soils. However, there is very little data about how changes in arsenic (As) leaching from silty soils caused by the addition of cementitious materials. Therefore, batch leaching tests were conducted using As-bearing silty soil under different pH conditions. The pH was adjusted by changing the amount of slag cement added or the concentration of sodium hydroxide. This allows us to evaluate the effects of cement on As leaching. In addition, two different additives were applied to reduce As migration. The results show that high concentration of calcium ion (Ca2+) in leachates of soil-cement mixture has a significant effect in reducing the mobility of As even under hyperalkaline pH conditions. Arsenic immobilized by Ca2+ was observed in two patterns. The first mechanism was the help of Ca2+ to reduce the negative electrical potential on the surface of (hydr)oxide minerals under high pH conditions, thereby reducing the mobility of As by adsorption and coagulation of fresh precipitates of Fe and Al hydroxides. The second was the precipitation of calcium carbonate. This precipitate either directly adsorb/co-precipitate As or lower the concentration of strong competing ion, silica, both of which reduced the As mobility. When Ca- or Mg-based additive was added to the silty soil-cement mixture, As concentration in the leachate decreased. Amyloid β (Aβ) peptides produced from the amyloid precursor protein, a transmembrane protein, are neurotoxic and blocking the neurotoxicity may lead to prevention of Alzheimer's disease (AD). Here we tested whether Aβ25-35-induced cognitive decline is rescued by treatment with dehydroeffusol, a phenanthrene isolated from Chinese medicine Juncus effusus. Dehydroeffusol (5 ~ 15 mg/kg body weight) was orally administered to mice for 6 days and Aβ25-35 (2 mM) was injected at the rate of 1 μl/min for 3 min into the lateral ventricle. Y-maze test was performed after dehydroeffusol administration for 12 days. Aβ25-35 impaired learning and memory in the test, while the impairment was dose-dependently rescued by dehydroeffusol administration. The present study indicates that treatment with dehydroeffusol is effective for rescuing Aβ25-35-induced cognitive decline. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We have numerically succeeded in evaluating the conductance fluctuations of nitrogen-doped single-walled carbon nanotubes (N-SWCNTs), as a typical example of disordered quasi-one-dimensional materials, including the effect of thermal atomic vibration from the viewpoint of conductance histograms. We show that conductance histograms even of N-SWCNTs with over 100 nm length are described by a log-normal distribution function at tens of kelvins, which suggests that the N-SWCNTs shows localization at low temperature. On the other hand, conductance of the N-SWCNT are no longer described by a log-normal distribution function at hundreds of kelvins. Instead, the histograms are described by a Gaussian distribution function, which indicates that the N-SWCNTs definitely deviate from localization regime. In addition, we confirm that the conductance fluctuations of the N-SWCNTs are also suppressed as the temperature increases because of delocalization due to quantum decoherence caused by thermal atomic vibration. Background: Chromosomal deletion involving the 6p25 region results in a clinically recognizable syndrome characterized by anterior eye chamber anomalies with risk of glaucoma and non-ocular malformations (6p25 deletion syndrome). We report a newborn infant case of childhood glaucoma with a combination of partial monosomy 6p25 and partial trisomy 18p11 due to an unbalanced translocation. Materials and methods: The patient was a 0-year-old girl. Both eyes showed aniridia and left eye Peters anomaly with multiple malformations. To identify the chromosomal aberrations in the patient with clinically suspected 6p25 deletion syndrome, we performed cytogenetic analysis (G-banding and multicolor fluorescent in-situ hybridization) and array-based comparative genomic hybridization (array-CGH) analysis. Results: Cytogenetic analyses revealed a derivative chromosome 6 with its distal short arm replaced by an extra copy of the short arm of chromosome 18. Array-CGH analysis detected a 4.6-Mb deletion at 6pter to 6p25.1 and 8.9-Mb duplication at 18pter to 18p11.22. To determine the breakpoint of the unbalanced rearrangement at the single-base level, we performed a long-range PCR for amplifying the junctional fragment of the translocation breakpoint. By sequencing the junctional fragment, we defined the unbalanced translocation as g.chr6:pter_4594783delinschr18:pter_8911541. Conclusions: A phenotype corresponding to combined monosomy 6p25 and trisomy 18p11 presented as childhood glaucoma associated with non-acquired (congenital) ocular anomalies consist of aniridia and Peters anomaly and other systemic malformations. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report which demonstrated the breakpoint sequence of an unbalanced translocation in a Japanese infant with childhood glaucoma. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Airtight construction and high‐performance thermal insulation materials are commonly considered important building features to enhance indoor thermal comfort while reducing thermal load. However, when water vapor is generated in such airtight indoor spaces, it cannot be discharged to the outside, causing interstitial condensation and subsequent intrusion of moisture into the walls. Hygroscopic building materials such as cellulose fiber insulation (CFI), characterized by high water capacity, are a potential countermeasure against such condensation. In this study, the humidity control performance of external walls containing CFI was evaluated using data measured inside a demonstration house and calculated by numerical simulations based on thermodynamic chemical potential theory. The changes in moisture adsorption and desorption were then evaluated for different wall constructions and different climate conditions using a parameter sensitivity analysis. Finally, the effective application of CFI to prevent interstitial condensation was confirmed by comparing different wall compositions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
