Converting non‐visual light into photocurrent while maintaining high visual transparency is vital for semitransparent organic solar cells (ST‐OSCs) application, yet often challenging over insufficient invisible light‐harvesting. Herein, spectrally selective optical manipulation for ST‐OSCs with high visual light transparency and full‐spectral non‐visual light reflection is proposed by matching the optical admittance of ultrathin Ag films using ZnS and MgF2. The reflection of optically enhanced ST‐OSCs at the spectral region beyond the human eye's response spectrum is improved and the transmission in the visual region is simultaneously enhanced. By further integrating an anti‐reflective structure, the optimal structure boosts the average visible transmittance and power conversion efficiency of ST‐OSCs to 44.3% and 12.6%, respectively, yielding a record light utilization efficiency of 5.6%. Corresponding flexible ST‐OSCs with high mechanical stability implies that this work provides a facile and universal strategy for ST‐OSCs aiming at building integrated photovoltaics. Photodiode‐type solar‐blind photodetectors (SBPDs) with the self‐powered feature hold great promise for applications in unattended secure communication, flame detection, and missile warning. However, the responsivity of SBPDs is usually limited due to the severe solar‐blind (SB) light extinction in substrates and charge transport layers. Herein, a spectrally selective hole extraction structure (SHE) is proposed for high‐efficiency perovskite SBPDs. The SHE consisting of a tandem Fabry–Perot cavity and energy‐level‐matched hole transport layer endows the device with narrowband absorption in the SB region and optimized charge extraction capability from the CsPbI2Br perovskite. The optimized SHE exhibits a peak transmittance of 27% at 255 nm and a half maximum at full width of 28 nm. Under SB light illumination, the champion device achieves a responsivity of 56.20 mA W−1 and a detectivity (D*) of 2.86 × 1013 Jones, which are the record values among the reported results. The sulfamate ions can simultaneously regulate the phase distribution and passivate defects through coordination interactions with undercoordinated lead atoms. Consequently, such synergistic effect constructs quasi‐2D blue perovskite films with smooth energy landscape and reduced trap states, leading to pure‐blue PeLEDs with a maximum external quantum efficiency (EQE) of 17.32 %, spectrally stable emission at 478 nm and the prolonged operational lifetime. Heating is a knotty factor contributing to device degradation of flexible organic solar cells (FOSCs), and thermal regulation plays a crucial role in the realization of long operational lifetime. Herein, a passive cooling strategy for stable FOSCs is proposed by boosting the optical‐thermal radiative transfer to reduce the insufficient thermal dissipation and the elevated temperature caused by irradiation‐induced heating, while retaining their flexibility and portability. A spectrally selective coupling structure consisting of subwavelength hemisphere pattern and distributed Bragg reflector is integrated into FOSCs to collectively enhance out‐coupling of infrared radiation and limit near‐infrared absorption‐induced heat generation, leading to a reduced heat power intensity of 292.5 W cm−2 and the decreased working temperature by 9.6 °C under outdoor sunlight irradiation. The D18:Y6:PC71BM‐based FOSCs achieve a power conversion efficiency of over 17% with a prolonged T80 lifetime as long as one year under real outdoor working conditions. Semitransparent organic solar cells (STOSCs) hold great promise for applications ranging from building‐integrated photovoltaics to portable electronic devices, yet often challenging over the realization of color tunability. The structural colors generated by microcavity, subwavelength grating, or photonic crystals are highly dependent on the viewing angle, which limits the application of STOSCs in real scenarios. Herein, the spectrally selective substrates consisting of silica spheres‐based amorphous photonic crystals (APCs) are proposed to unify the optical spectra of STOSCs at different viewing angles. By optimizing the periodicity of APCs, STOSCs exhibit viewing‐angle‐independent reflection with colors varying from blue to pink. The synergetic interplay between the reflection of APCs and the absorption of active layer results in the Janus optical effect that the transmitted light is fixed at blue regardless of the reflected color. The STOSCs on flexible plastic retain the stable color even at bending state. These results pave the way for the potential application of colorful solar photovoltaic glass curtains. Using narrow bandgap nonfullerene acceptors (NFAs) can broaden the absorption spectrum of organic solar cells (OSCs) to the near‐infrared region. However, the simultaneously decreased extinction coefficient of the active layer at the blue region results in inevitable light escaping and energy loss. Herein, a blazed grating‐based device configuration consisting of a patterned rear electrode is employed to compensate for the low absorption of nonfullerene OSCs. Experimental results reveal that the normal incidence light, especially blue light, that bounces off the patterned rear electrode is concentrated in a large tilted angle and subsequently trapped in waveguide mode. Along with the excitation of surface plasmon polariton, the structured nonfullerene OSCs using a new‐designed PM6:M36 active layer obtain the broadband absorption enhancement with 1.5 times increase at the blue region. The optimized device achieves an 8.95% increase in photocurrent and a champion power conversion efficiency of approaching 18%, which is the highest reported value among all the devices based on A‐D‐A type NFAs. Background: In predicting the risk for posthepatectomy complications, hepatectomy is traditionally classified into minor or major resection based on the number of resected segments. Recently, a new hepatectomy complexity classification was proposed. This study aimed to compare the value of the traditional and that of the new classification in perioperative outcomes prediction.Methods: Demographics, perioperative laboratory tests, intraoperative and postoperative outcomes, and follow-up data of patients with hepatocellular carcinoma who underwent liver resection were retrospectively analyzed.Results: A total of 302 patients were included in our study. Multivariable analysis of intraoperative variables showed that the complexity classification could independently predict the occurrence of blood loss > 800 mL, operation time > 4 h, intraoperative transfusion, and the use of Pringle's maneuver (all p < 0.05). For postoperative outcomes, the high-complexity group was independently associated with severe complications, and hepatic-related complications (all p < 0.05); the traditional classification was independently associated only with posthepatectomy liver failure (PHLF) (p = 0.004).Conclusions: Complexity classification could be used to assess the difficulty of surgery and was independently associated with postoperative complications. Background: Percutaneous radiofrequency ablation (RFA) is used as a first‐line treatment for colorectal liver metastases that recur after first liver resection in our institution. We aim to evaluate its therapeutic efficacy compared to repeated surgical resection. Methods: A retrospective review was performed in 104 patients treated with curative intent for resectable recurrent colorectal liver metastases. Results: Sixty‐one patients underwent RFA and 43 patients underwent surgery. The overall recurrence rates were 82% in the RFA group and 65.1% in the resection group (P = 0.05). The local recurrence rate on a lesion‐basis was markedly higher after RFA than that after resection (16.7% versus 7.3%, P = 0.04). The difference remained significant in patients with a maximum lesion diameter >3 cm (24.5% versus 7.6%, P = 0.01). RFA treatment was independently associated with recurrence on multivariate analyses (P = 0.01). 69.7% of RFA patients and 42.6% of surgery patients with intrahepatic recurrence were amenable to repeated local treatment (P = 0.05), leading to the equivalent actuarial 3‐year progression free survival rates (RFA: 29.1% versus Resection: 33.1%, P = 0.48) and 5‐year overall survival rates in the two treatment groups (RFA: 33% versus Resection: 28.4%, P = 0.36). Background: The neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio (NLR) is a marker of inflammation and is associated with poor outcomes. We aimed to evaluate the role of the pretreatment NLR in predicting the outcomes after preoperative chemotherapy in patients with colorectal liver metastases (CRLM).Methods: A retrospective review was performed for 183 patients with CRLM. The NLR was measured before chemotherapy, and a receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve was used to estimate the cutoff value. Logistic regressions were applied to analyze potential predictors of the pathological response. The Cox proportional hazard method was used to analyze survival.Results: The pre-chemotherapy NLR was 2.4 ± 1.1, whereas the post-chemotherapy NLR was 2.1 ± 1.6 (p < 0.001). The pretreatment NLR of 2.3 was a significant predictive marker for the pathological response. The pathological response rates were 67.1% in the patients with an NLR ≤ 2.3 and 48.1% in patients with an NLR > 2.3 (p = 0.01). Multivariate analysis revealed that the factors independently associated with pathological responses were a low pretreatment NLR (p = 0.043), radiological response to chemotherapy (p < 0.001), first-line chemotherapy (p = 0.001), and targeted therapy (p = 0.002). The median overall survival (OS) and recurrence-free survival (RFS) were worse in the increased NLR cohort than in the low NLR cohort (OS: 31.1 vs. 43.1 months, p = 0.012; RFS: 6.5 vs. 9.4 months, p = 0.06). According to multivariate analyses, a high pretreatment NLR was a significant predictor for both worse OS (HR = 2.43, 95%CI = 1.49-3.94, p < 0.001) and RFS (HR = 1.53, 95%CI = 1.08-2.18, p = 0.017).Conclusions: An increased pretreatment NLR was a significant predictor of a poor pathological response and worse prognosis after preoperative chemotherapy. Aim The prognostic value of the newly raised objective liver function assessment tool, the albumin-bilirubin (ALBI) grade, in patients with hepatocellular carcinoma has not been fully validated. We aimed to compare the performance of ALBI grade with the specific Child-Pugh (C-P) score in predicting prognosis in this study. Methods The clinical data of 491 C-P class A patients who underwent liver resection as initial therapy from January 2000 to December 2007 in Cancer Hospital, Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences (Beijing, China) were retrospectively analyzed. The prognostic performances of ALBI and C-P score in predicting the short- and long-term clinical outcomes were compared. Results The ALBI score gained a significantly larger area under the receiver operating characteristic curve for predicting the occurrence of severe postoperative complications than that of C-P score. With a median follow-up of 57 months, the 1-year, 3-year, and 5-year overall survival rates of the patients were 92.1%, 65.8%, and 45.2%, respectively. Tumor number, tumor size, and ALBI grade were proved to be the independent prognostic factors for overall survival in the multivariate analysis. Prognostic performance was shown to be better for ALBI grade when it was compared to C-P score in terms of both the Akaike information criterion value and χ2 value of likelihood ratio test. Conclusions The ALBI grade, which was featured by simplicity and objectivity, gained a superior prognostic value than that of C-P grade in patients with hepatocellular carcinoma who underwent liver resection. Genomic aberrations of rectal carcinoma, especially DNA copy number changes associated with metastasis were largely unclear. We aim to identify the metastasis associated biomarkers in stage II rectal cancer. Formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded primary tumor tissues of stage II rectal carcinoma were analyzed by array-based comparative genomic hybridization, and genomic aberrations were identified by Genomic Workbench and SAM software. Copy number changes and mRNA expressions were validated by Real-time PCR in an independent rectal cancer samples. The results showed that the most frequent gains in stage II rectal cancer were at 1q21.2-q23.1, 3p21.31, 11q12.2-q23.3, 12q24.11-q24.31, 12q13.11-q14.1 and losses in 18q11.2-q23, 17q21.33-q22, 13q31.1-q31.3, 21q21.1-q21.3, 8p23.3-p23.1 and 4q22.1-q23. Twenty-two amplifications and five homozygous deletions were also identified. We further found that S100A1 (1q21.3-q23.1), MCM7 (7q22.1) and JUND (19p13.11) were amplified and overexpressed in stage II rectal cancer. Interestingly, the genomic aberrations affected 14 signaling pathways including VEGF signaling pathway and fatty acid metabolism. Most importantly, loss of 13q31.1-q34 and gain of 1q44 were associated with distant metastasis. Our results indicated that these metastasis associated genomic changes may be useful to reveal the pathogenesis of rectal cancer metastasis and identify candidate biomarkers. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Assessing the prognosis of patients with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) by the number and size of tumors is sometimes difficult. The main purpose of the study was to evaluate the prognostic value of total tumor volume (TTV), which combines the two factors, in patients with HCC who underwent liver resection. We retrospectively reviewed 521 HCC patients from January 2001 to December 2008 in our center. Patients were categorized using the tertiles of TTV. The prognostic value of TTV was assessed. With a median follow-up of 116 months, the 1-, 3-, and 5-year overall survival (OS) rates of the patients were 93.1 , 69.9, and 46.3 %, respectively. OS was significantly differed by TTV tertile groups, and higher TTV was associated with shorter OS ( P < 0.001). Multivariate analysis revealed that TTV was an independent prognostic factor for OS. Larger TTV was significantly associated with higher alpha-fetoprotein level, presence of macrovascular invasion, multiple tumor lesions, larger tumor size, and advanced tumor stages (all P < 0.05). Within the first and second tertiles of TTV (TTV ≤ 73.5 cm), no significant differences in OS were detected in patients within and beyond Milan criteria ( P = 0.183). TTV-based Cancer of the Liver Italian Program (CLIP) score gained the lowest Akaike information criterion value, the highest χ value of likelihood ratio test, and the highest C-index among the tested staging systems. Our results suggested that TTV is a good indicator of tumor burden in patients with HCC. Further studies are warranted to validate the prognostic value of TTV. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objective: The definite prognostic role of p-STAT3 has not been well defined. We performed a meta-analysis evaluating the prognostic role of p-STAT3 expression in patients with digestive system cancers. Methods: We searched the available articles reporting the prognostic value of p-STAT3 in patients with cancers of the digestive system, mainly including colorectal cancer, gastric cancer, hepatocellular carcinoma, esophagus cancer and pancreatic cancer. The pooled hazard ratios (HRs) with 95 % confidence intervals (95 % CIs) of overall survival (OS) and disease-free survival (DFS) were used to assess the prognostic role of p-STAT3 expression level in cancer tissues. And the association between p-STAT3 expression and clinicopathological characteristics was evaluated. Results: A total of 22 studies with 3585 patients were finally enrolled in the meta-analysis. The results showed that elevated p-STAT3 expression level predicted inferior OS (HR=1.809, 95% CI: 1.442-2.270, P<0.001) and DFS (HR=1.481, 95% CI: 1.028-2.133, P= 0.035) in patients with malignant cancers of the digestive system. Increased expression of p-STAT3 is significantly related with tumor cell differentiation (Odds ratio (OR) =1.895, 95% CI: 1.364-2.632, P<0.001) and lymph node metastases (OR=2.108, 95% CI: 1.104-4.024, P=0.024). Sensitivity analysis suggested that the pooled HR was stable and omitting a single study did not change the significance of the pooled HR. Funnel plots and Egger’s tests revealed there was no significant publication bias in the meta-analysis. Conclusion: Phospho-STAT3 might be a prognostic factor of patients with digestive system cancers. More well designed studies with adequate follow-up are needed to gain a thorough understanding of the prognostic role of p-STAT3. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
