This paper explores whether it is feasible to use the RGB color information in images of wheat canopies that were exposed to low temperatures during the growth season to achieve fast, non-destructive, and accurate determination of the severity of any freeze injury it may have incurred. For the study presented in this paper, we compared the accuracy of a number of algorithmic classification models using either meteorological data reported by weather services or the color gradation skewness-distribution from high-definition digital canopy images acquired in situ as inputs against a reference obtained by manually assessing the severity of the freeze injury inflicted upon wheat populations at three experimental stations in Shandong, China. The algorithms we used to construct the models included in our study were based on either K-means clustering, systematic clustering, or naïve Bayesian classification. When analyzing the reliability of our models, we found that, at more than 85%, the accuracy of the Bayesian model, which used the color information as inputs and involved the use of prior data in the form of the reference data we had obtained through manual classification, was significantly higher than that of the models based on systematic or the K-means clustering, which did not involve the use of prior data. It was interesting to note that the determination accuracy of algorithms using meteorological factors as inputs was significantly lower than that of those using color information. We also noted that the determination accuracy of the Bayesian model had some potential for optimization, which prompted us to subject the inputs of the model to a factor analysis in order to identify the key independent leaf color distribution parameters characterizing wheat freeze injury severity. This optimization allowed us to improve the determination accuracy of the model to over 90%, even in environments comprising several different ecological zones, as was the case at one of our experimental sites. In conclusion, our naïve Bayesian classification algorithm, which uses six key color gradation skewness-distribution parameters as inputs and involves the use of prior data in the form of manual assessments, qualifies as a contender for the development of commercial-grade wheat freeze injury severity monitoring systems supporting post-freeze management measures aimed at ensuring food security. Objective: Parkinson's disease (PD) is a profoundly incapacitating neurodegenerative disorder, which presents a substantial challenge to the economic sustainability of the global healthcare system. The present study seeks to clarify the factors that contribute to the costs associated with PD hospitalization and analyze the economic burden it imposes. Methods: We examined data of 19,719 patients with a primary diagnosis of PD who were admitted to hospitals in Hubei Province, China, during the study period. Healthcare data were obtained from the database of electronic medical records. The study presents a comprehensive analysis of the demographic characteristics and investigates the factors that affect their healthcare expenditure. Results: The cohort consisted of 10,442 (53.0%) males and 9,277 (47.0%) females. The age-group of 66–70 years experienced the highest incidence of hospitalization among PD patients, with a mortality rate of 0.76‰. The average length of stay for patients was 9.9 ± 8.6 days and the average cost per patient was USD 1,759.9 ± 4,787.7. Surgical interventions were conducted on a mere 2.0% of the total inpatient population. The primary cost component for these interventions was material expenses, accounting for 70.1% of the total. Non-surgical patients primarily incurred expenses related to diagnosis and medication. Notably, surgical patients faced a substantial out-of-pocket rate, reaching up to 90.6%. Surgery was identified as the most influential factor that negatively affected both length of stay and hospitalization costs. Inpatients exhibited significant associations with prolonged length of stay and increased medical expenditure as age increased. Male patients had significantly longer hospital stays and higher medical costs than did females. Additionally, patient's occupation and type of medical insurance exerted significant effects on both length of stay and medical expense. Conclusion: Age significantly affects PD hospitalization costs. Given the prevailing demographic shift toward an aging population, the government's medical insurance burden related to PD will continue to escalate. Meanwhile, high treatment expenses and out-of-pocket rates impose substantial financial burdens on patients, limiting surgical intervention access to a small fraction of patients. Laser ablation in liquids (LAL) is an emerging laser technique for rapidly producing surfactant-free nanoparticles (NPs), which require minimal postprocessing and purification. Current work employing LAL has primarily focused on the generation of metal oxides and NPs composed of a single element. Here, we show that the ablation of hafnium (Hf) foil in different organic liquids allows for the controlled synthesis of HfO2 and HfC in selected ratios, resulting in a synthetic scheme for the rational design of materials relevant for high temperature and plasma applications. Additionally, the physical properties of the organic solvents can dictate the overall NP size distribution; specifically, solvents with low boiling points produce a large dispersity of NPs. This work indicates that the material-formation process is much more complicated than previous studies have indicated and paves the way for a pulsed-laser synthesis methodology that is tunable for desired properties. Extremely important for water electrolysis are the rational design and investigation of oxygen evolution reaction (OER) electrocatalysts with excellent performance and long-term durability and that are precious metal-free. Herein, we demonstrate the convenient synthesis of a nitrogen-doped carbon-wrapped nickel cobalt alloy (NiCo2@NC) by pyrolysis of the metal complex. The results indicate that the ideal Ni/Co ratio and NC wrapping can provide high Cdl, low charge transfer resistance, and long-term durability for electrocatalysts, which are all reasons for significant OER performance. The optimal NiCo2@NC composite exhibits rapid OER reaction kinetics, which require a comparatively low overpotential of 288 mV at 10 mA cm–2 and a relatively small Tafel slope of 66 mV dec–1 in the alkaline electrolyte. Furthermore, I–t experiments were performed to demonstrate its better long-term catalytic endurance. Electrocatalysts with a high oxygen evolution reaction (OER) activity are very important for electrochemical water oxidation, but they are also challenging. In this study, N-doped graphene-like supported highly dispersed bimetallic NiCoP NPs as an efficient electrocatalyst for water oxidation were prepared by using cation exchange resin as a carbon source and by loading cobalt and nickel on D001 by a high-temperature calcination method. The designed electrocatalyst with bimetallic phosphide as the active center shows excellent OER catalytic performance, with an overpotential of 324 mV at 10 mA cm−2 and a corresponding Tafel slope of 97.28 mV dec−1. The increase in NiCoP-3@GL activity may be due to the increase in surface area (933.49 m2 g−1) caused by the irregular morphology, rich interface contact, and porous structure. In addition, the strong combination of NiCoP and GL improves the structural stability and durability of the electrocatalyst. After 5000 cyclic voltammetry tests, the performance of the catalyst decreased by 16.9 %. This work provides a new idea for designing efficient bimetallic phosphide electrocatalysts. Background: Nance–Horan syndrome (NHS) is a rare and often overlooked X‐linked dominant disorder characterized by dense congenital cataracts, dental abnormalities, and mental retardation. The majority of NHS variations include frameshift mutations, nonsense mutations, microdeletions, and insertions. Methods: Copy number variation sequencing was performed to determine the microdeletion. The expression of NHS was detected by RT‐PCR. Four family members were tested for X chromosome inactivation. Results: In this study, all members were examined for systemic examinations and genetic testing of four members and two affected subjects are observed. We identified a heterozygous microdeletion of −0.52 Mb at Xp22.13 in a female proband presenting NHS phenotypically. The microdeletion contains the REPS2 and NHS genes and was inherited from a phenotypically normal mother. Of interest, the expression NHS of proband was reduced and the skewed X chromosome inactivation rate reached more than 85% compared with her mother and the control. It was concluded that the haploinsufficiency of the NHS gene may account for the majority of clinical symptoms in the affected subjects. The variability among female carriers presumably results from nonrandom X chromosome inactivation. The crop leaf color is tightly connected with its meteorological environment. Color gradation skewness-distribution (CGSD) parameters can describe the information of leaf color more accurately, systematically, and comprehensively from five dimensions. We took photographs of pepper growing in the greenhouse at a fixed time every day and observed the meteorological factors. The results showed that the CGSD parameters were significantly correlated with meteorological factors, especially with the accumulated temperature, which showed the strongest correlation. Since the relationship between canopy leaf color and accumulated temperature is nonlinear, the piecewise inversion models were constructed by taking the stationary point of the high-order response model of Gskewness to accumulated temperature as the point of demarcation. The rate of outliers had decreased by 57.72%; moreover, the overall inversion accuracy had increased by 3.31% compared with the linear model directly constructed by the stepwise regression. It was observed that the pepper in the greenhouse had a different response to the same meteorological environmental stimulus before and after the stationary point. Nowadays, the evaluation of students' learning effect in colleges and universities mainly rely on manual management and supervision, which is inefficient and inaccurate. What's worse, it completely depends on the subjective judgment of the supervisors, many potential teaching quality data could be ignored. Using an unsupervised classroom monitoring system based on deep learning can master the learner's learning result. This paper mainly researched a learner's behavior evaluation method based on deep learning. Firstly, MTCNN is being used to detected learner's facial feature in order to confirm their identification. Then, collected the data set in learning environment and a Mosaic data enhancement had been done. Later, an improved method, is proposed. Identifying the students' actions of playing the mobile phone, moving to classroom, eating, reading, writing, this method has more advantages on classroom behavior detecting. In addition, by building a quantitative evaluation method–CFIndex (class focus index), the time of students' behaviors in classroom has been calculated. Therefore, CFIndex evaluation method can well reflect the real performance of students in the classroom. In this paper, compared with Fast R-CNN and classical algorithm on the same data set, the proposed method has better performance in classroom behavior detection, and it can better reflect the students' real actions in the classroom, it has certain meaning of theoretical guidance. The assembly and function of the yeast general transcription factor TFIID complex requires specific contacts between its Taf14 and Taf2 subunits, however, the mechanism underlying these contacts remains unclear. Here, we determined the molecular and structural basis by which the YEATS and ET domains of Taf14 bind to the C-terminal tail of Taf2 and identified a unique DNA-binding activity of the linker region connecting the two domains. We show that in the absence of ligands the linker region of Taf14 is occluded by the surrounding domains, and therefore the DNA binding function of Taf14 is autoinhibited. Binding of Taf2 promotes a conformational rearrangement in Taf14, resulting in a release of the linker for the engagement with DNA and the nucleosome. Genetic in vivo data indicate that the association of Taf14 with both Taf2 and DNA is essential for transcriptional regulation. Our findings provide a basis for deciphering the role of individual TFIID subunits in mediating gene transcription. Here the authors report that the Taf2 and Taf14 subunits of the yeast TFIID complex interact and mediate binding to chromatin. Binding of Taf2 to Taf14 promotes a conformational rearrangement in Taf14, resulting in a release of the linker region for the engagement with the nucleosome and their association with DNA is essential for transcriptional regulation. Objective: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the safety, efficiency, and cost expenditure of remote programming in patients with Parkinson's disease (PD) after deep brain stimulation (DBS). Methods: A total of 74 patients who underwent DBS at the Department of Neurosurgery, Zhongnan Hospital of Wuhan University between June 2018 and June 2020 were enrolled in this study. There were 27 patients in the remote programming group and 47 patients in the outpatient programming group. Clinical data, programming efficiency, adverse events, expenditure, and satisfaction were compared between the two groups. Results: A total of 36 times of remote programming were performed on the 27 patients in the remote programming group, and four had mild adverse events during programming, and the adverse events disappeared within 1 week. The satisfaction questionnaire showed that 97.3% of the patients were satisfied with the surgical effect. The patients in the remote programming group (88.9%) were more likely to receive long-term programming after DBS than the patients in the outpatient programming group (74.5%). The Parkinsonism symptoms improved in both programming groups. The majority (18/27) of patients in the remote programming group lived away from the programming center, while the majority (27/47) of patients in the outpatient programming group lived in Wuhan, where the programming center was located (P = 0.046). The cost per patient per programming was US$ 43.5 in the remote programming group and $59.5 (56–82.7) in the outpatient programming group (P < 0.001). The median time cost for each visit was 30 min (25–30) in the remote programming group and 150 min (135–270.0) in the outpatient programming group (P < 0.001). Conclusion: Remote programming is safe and effective after DBS in patients with Parkinson's disease. Organic materials with controllable molecular design and sustainable resources are promising electrode materials. Crystalline quinones have been investigated in a variety of rechargeable battery chemistries due to their ubiquitous nature, voltage tunability and environmental friendliness. In acidic electrolytes, quinone crystals can undergo proton-coupled electron transfer (PCET), resulting in charge storage. However, the detailed mechanism of this phenomenon remains elusive. To model PCET in crystalline quinones, force field-based methods are not viable due to variable redox states of the quinone molecules during battery operation and computationally efficient quantum mechanical methods are strongly desired. The semi-empirical density functional tight-binding (DFTB) method has been widely used to study inorganic crystalline systems and biological systems but has not been comprehensively benchmarked for studying charge transport in quinones. In this work, we benchmark the third order variant of DFTB (DFTB3) for the reduction potential of quinones in aqueous solution, energetics of proton transfer between quinones and between quinones and water, and structural and electronic properties of crystalline quinones. Our results reveal the deficiencies of the DFTB3 method in describing the proton affinity of quinones and the structural and electronic properties of crystalline quinones, and highlight the need for further development of the DFTB method for describing charge transport in crystalline quinones. Background: Tyrosinase-positive oculocutaneous albinism (OCA, type II, OCA2) is an autosomal recessive genetic disease in which the biosynthesis of melanin decreases in the skin, hair, and eyes. OCA2 disease is caused by mutations in OCA2 gene. The gene product plays a role in regulating the pH of melanosomes. Up to now, hundreds of OCA2 mutations have been reported and novel variants are still being discovered. Methods: In this study, we reviewed the records of OCA2 patients who had conducted albinism genetic testing, and then analyzed the clinical and genetic information of 28 OCA2 patients who had been genetically diagnosed by using Sanger sequencing and next-generation sequencing. Results: In this study, we reported 31 variants screened from 28 Chinese OCA2 families, and characterized the detailed molecular and clinical presentations. There were 12 novel variants among all detected variants, including 3 missense variants (p.G393V, p.T482A, and p.R720P), 4 frameshift variants (p.R53Gfs∗49, p.N279Kfs∗17, p.I469Lfs∗4, p.I655Nfs∗12), 2 splicing variants (c.1637-2A > G, c.1951 + 1G > C), 2 stopgain variants (p.L278X, p.W652X) and 1 insertion variants (p.P315LinsT). One potential cluster of missense variants was implicated indicating the important roles of the underlying domains in OCA2 pathogenesis. Conclusion: Our results were beneficial for diagnosis and precision clinical management for OCA2 -related disorder, and this study expanded the mutation spectrum of oculocutaneous albinism. Background: To summarize the safety and effectiveness of high flow extracranial to intracranial saphenous vein bypass grafting in the treatment of complex intracranial aneurysms.Methods: The data of complex intracranial aneurysms patients for high flow extracranial to intracranial saphenous vein bypass grafting from January 2008 to January 2020 were retrospectively collected and analyzed. Eighty-two patients (31 men and 51 women) with 89 aneurysms underwent 82 saphenous vein bypass grafts followed by immediate parent vessel occlusion. The aneurysm was located at the internal carotid artery, middle cerebral artery, and basilar artery in 75, 11, and 3 cases, respectively.Results: The patency rate of bypass grafting was 100, 100, 96.3 and 92.4% on intraoperation, on the first postoperative day, at discharge and 6 months follow-up, respectively. At discharge and 6 months follow-up, 3 and 6 patients had graft occlusions. The main postoperative complications were transient hemiparesis and hemianopsia. 3 patients died due to bypass complications and poor physical condition.Conclusions: High flow extracranial to intracranial saphenous vein bypass grafting is safe and effective in the treatment of complex intracranial aneurysms and the saphenous vein can meet the requirements of brain blood supply. A high rate of graft patency and adequate cerebral blood flow can be achieved.Highlights: A single-centre long-term retrospective study was conducted to assess the safety and effectiveness of high flow EC-IC saphenous vein bypass grafting in the treatment of complex intracranial aneurysms. The data of 82 patients from January 2008 to January 2020 were retrospectively collected and analysed. Open-phase fault (OPF) in the permanent magnet synchronous machine (PMSM) drive system is one of the most prevalent failures due to the resulting large electromagnetic torque ripples and serious mechanical vibration. To improve the reliability of the PMSM drive system, several OPF diagnosis methods were studied and were mainly focused on vector control system. Recently, model predictive control (MPC) has been emerging as a popular control method for the PMSM drive system owing to its simple structure and excellent dynamic performance. However, so far, there are no special OPF diagnosis methods for the model predictive controlled PMSM drive system. Hence, this article first proposes a cost function-based OPF diagnosis method for the model predictive controlled PMSM drive system, considering the characteristics of MPC system. The dc component and second harmonic component in the cost function are used for the OPF diagnosis, and the initial phase angle differences are defined to locate the faulty phase. The experimental results show that, by the proposed fault diagnosis method, not only the OPF can be rapidly detected, but also the faulty phase can be effectively located. Moreover, the proposed method can be implemented simply and is robust against the operating point and parameter variations of the PMSM drive system. This article proposes an OPF diagnosis method for the model predictive controlled PMSM drive system based on cost function, taking into account the characteristics of the MPCC system. This study proposes a model predictive control (MPC) method with a fixed weighting factor for three‐phase four‐switch inverter‐fed permanent magnet synchronous motor drives to suppress the capacitor voltage offset. The prediction model of the capacitor voltage difference is obtained based on the relationship between capacitor voltage and phase current. Then by analysing the relationship between basic voltage vector, electromagnetic torque and flux amplitude, the control of electromagnetic torque and flux in the model predictive torque control is transformed into the control of the voltage vector. The dimension of the capacitor voltage difference is the same as that of the voltage vector, hence the cost function with the fixed weighting factor is defined with the consideration of the capacitor voltage offset suppression. In China, the most common grain crop is maize (Zea mays). The increasing pressure to meet the food demands of its growing population has pushed Chinese maize farmers toward an excessive use of chemical fertilizers, a practice which ultimately leads to a massive waste of resources and widespread environmental pollution. As a result, increasing the yield and improving the nitrogen (N) use efficiency of maize has become a critical issue for agriculture in China. This study, which analyzes the combined data from a simulation carried out using the Decision Support System for Agrotechnology Transfer (DSSAT), a field experiment, and a household survey, explored the effectiveness of several approaches aimed at narrowing the maize yield gap and improving the N utilization efficiency in the Huang-Huai-Hai Plain (HHHP), the most important area for the production of summer maize in China. The various approaches we studied deploy different methods for the integrated management of N fertilizer input and the planting density. The study produced the following results: (1) For the simulated and actual maize yields, the root mean square error (RMSE), the normalized root mean squared errors (NRMSE) and the index of agreement (d) were 1,171 (kg ha–1), 12% and 0.84, respectively. These results show that the model is viable for the experiment included in the study; (2) The potential yield was 15.58 t ha–1, and the yields achieved by the super-high-yield cultivation pattern (SH), the optimized nutrient and density management pattern (ONM), the simulated farmer's practice cultivation pattern (FP) and actual farmer's practice (AFP) were 11.43, 11.06, 10.33, and 7.95 t ha–1, respectively. The yield gaps associated with the different yield levels were large; (3) For summer maize, the high yield and a high N partial factor productivity (NPFP) was found when applying a planting density of 9 plants m–2 and an N application amount of 246 kg ha–1. These results suggest that the maximum yield that can actually be achieved by optimizing the N application and planting density is less than 73% of the potential yield. This implies in turn that in order to further narrow the observed yield gaps, other factors, such as irrigation, sowing dates and pest control need to be considered. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Introduction: Thalassemia traits and iron deficiency anemia are the most common types of hypochromic microcytic anemia with similar clinical and laboratory features. It is vital to establish a new screening model based on HbA2 levels and red cell indices for the differentiation of TT from IDA in hypochromic microcytic anemia cases. Method: The data comprised of the red blood cell indices and HbA2 prenatal diagnostic test results of 810 individuals who were identified to conform to the following criteria: MCV < 80 fl or MCH < 26 pg. We launched a new model consisting mainly of significative red cell indices and HbA2 levels, as well as proposing cutoff values by using decision trees and logistic regression analyses. Next, we evaluated our new method by comparing the sensitivity, specificity, positive, and negative predictive values with those of the previous formulas. Results: We put forward a new model and compared it with 5 efficient formulas. The new model exhibited the highest accuracy (0.918), with its sensitivity and specificity calculated as 0.917 and 0.921, respectively. Our new model's Youden index was 0.838, which is higher than the other formulas' Youden indices. Conclusions: The new screening model, based on HbA2 levels and red cell indices, is suitable for the screening of thalassemia patients in the hypochromic microcytic anemia group and has the best efficiency in distinguishing TT and IDA. This article proposes a model-based strategy with robust parameter mismatch for online high resistance connection (HRC) diagnosis and localization in surface-mounted permanent magnet synchronous machine (PMSM) drive system. The mathematical mode of the PMSM with the HRC is established in the abc stationary frame and dq rotating frame. Based on the model, the voltage distortion estimator is applied to estimate the voltage distortions caused by the HRC. According to the voltage distortions, a new fault characteristic signal is defined and is analyzed under different fault conditions. Based on the defined signal, the fault indicators being insensitive to the parameter mismatch are defined to diagnose the fault and locate the faulty phases. By the proposed method, not only the HRC can be detected, but also the fault severity can be assessed and the faulty phases can be located, where no additional equipment or measurement devices are needed. Background: Primary pineal malignant melanoma (PPMM) is a rare entity of primary central nervous system melanomas, with only 26 cases reported in the literature to date. Case presentation: We report the case of a 65-year-old male with a PPMM who has prolonged survival of more than 104 weeks after combined microsurgical and endoscopic total resection. This is the first report: combined microscope and endoscopy total resection; PPMM in China; PPMM with total resection alone. Conclusion: Combined microscope and endoscopy total resection is beneficial to prolong the survival of patients. Background: Previous studies have shown that vinorelbine/capecitabine (NX) and docetaxel/capecitabine (TX) chemotherapy has a certain effect in advanced breast cancer. However, there are few clinical studies directly comparing TX and NX regimen chemotherapy, especially in patients with advanced breast cancer previously treated with anthracycline and taxane. The purpose of this Phase II study was to compare survival and side effects between patients with anthracycline- and taxane-resistant advanced breast cancer treated with NX and those treated with TX chemotherapy.Patients and Methods: From February 2012 to March 2014, a total number of 97 patients were randomly assigned to NX (n = 55) or TX (n = 42). Baseline characteristics were relatively well-balanced in the two treatment arms. The clinical trial registration number (clincaltrials.gov) is NCT01635465.Results: After a median follow-up of 46.0 months, there was no significant difference between the NX and TX arms in objective response rate (17.9% vs. 21.1%; P = 0.686) and progression-free survival (6 months vs. 7 months; P = 0.560). The overall survival period of the TX arm was longer than that of the NX arm (32 months vs. 27 months) but without statistical significance. Both regimens were well-tolerated. The main toxicities were neutropenia, leukopenia, and anemia. Organic-inorganic hybrid perovskite solar cells have generated wide interest due to the rapid development of their photovoltaic conversion efficiencies. However, the majority of the reported devices have been fabricated via spin coating with a device area of < 1 cm2. In this study, we fabricated a wide-bandgap formamidinium lead bromide (FAPbBr3) film using a cost-effective, high-yielding doctor-blade-coating process. The effects of different surfactants, such as 1-α-phosphatidylcholine, polyoxyethylene sorbitan monooleate, sodium lauryl sulfonate, and hexadecyl trimethyl ammonium bromide, were studied during the printing process. Accompanying the optimization of the blading temperature, crystal sizes of over 10 µm and large-area perovskite films of 5 cm × 5 cm were obtained using this method. The printed FAPbBr3 solar cells exhibited a short-circuit current density of 8.22 mA/cm2, an open-circuit voltage of 1.175 V, and an efficiency of 7.29%. Subsequently, we replaced the gold with silver nanowires as the top electrode to prepare a semitransparent perovskite solar cell with an average transmittance (400–800 nm) of 25.42%, achieving a high-power efficiency of 5.11%. This study demonstrates efficient doctor-blading printing for preparing large-area FAPbBr3 films that possess high potential for applications in building integrated photovoltaics. Interturn fault (ITF) is a common fault for permanent magnet synchronous machine (PMSM). If the ITF is not detected in time, its propagation may result in the secondary damage, even the damage to the whole electrical machine. Recently, model predictive control (MPC) has been widely studied for the PMSM drive system because of its simple structure and excellent dynamic performance. However, the previous ITF diagnosis methods are mainly focused on vector control and direct toque control systems, and few research works are specifically focused on ITF diagnosis for the model-predictive-controlled-PMSM. Hence, to fill this gap and improve the reliability of the model-predictive-controlled-PMSM, this article first proposes an ITF diagnosis method for the model-predictive-controlled-PMSM, taking into account the characteristics of the MPC system. In this method, wavelet transform is applied to extract the fault feature from the cost function existing in the MPC system, and the ITF is diagnosed by monitoring the normalized energy-related feature vector calculated from the wavelet transform coefficients. Additionally, to further show the performance of the proposed method, the popular diagnosis methods based on the stator current and zero sequence voltage component are studied for the comparative analysis. Francisella tularensis causes a highly infectious zoonotic disease tularemia. Both Haemaphysalis longicornis and Hyalomma asiaticum are widely distributed in China, but the presence of Francisella and Francisella-like endosymbionts (FLEs) in the two tick species is poorly understood. Therefore, a total of 627 H. longicornis (471 adults and 156 nymphs) and 88 Hy. asiaticum ticks (adults) were collected, of which 88 were from Bole of Xinjiang, 236 from Liaoyang, and 176 from Shenyang of Liaoning, and 215 from Wuhan of Hubei. Notably, five H. longicornis pools from Liaoyang of Liaoning province might have harbored F. tularensis, showing a minimum prevalence of 2.12% (5/236). This study should alert the health department and veterinarians working within the region to prevent and control the emergence of tularemia. After the screening of 16S rRNA and tul4 genes, the results revealed that FLEs were detected in Hy. asiaticum ticks in Bole and in H. longicornis ticks in Liaoyang and Shenyang. Their infection rate was 100% (88/88), 3.39% (8/236 is a minimum), and 8.52% (15/176), respectively. Phylogenetic analyses indicated that the sequence named bole in Hy. Asiaticum from Bole, the sequence named liaoyang1 in H. longicornis from Liaoyang, and the sequence named shanyang1 in H. longicornis from Shenyang shared consistent 16S rRNA sequence, and the difference between Chinese FLEs and the known FLEs was obvious. The molecular crystals of acridonyl-tetraphenylethene (AD-TPE) exhibit an intriguing turn-on and color-tuned luminescence in response to mechanical grinding and hydrostatic compression. On the basis of in-depth experimental and computational studies, it is hypothesized that the origin of the piezochromic behavior from the D-phase to the B-phase is the change of the intramolecular geometrical conformation, especially for the torsion angle between the TPE and AD moiety. The different molecular conformation in the two distinctive solid phases causes the substantial switching of the intra­molecular charge transfer (ICT) process, which can be directly correlated with the subsequent fluorescence from locally excited (LE) state and ICT state in both phases. The AD-TPE molecular system presents a very rare example of high-contrast reversible fluorescence tuning driven by a switching of the excited state in the solid state under the mechanical stimuli, and thus provides a novel mechanism of the piezochromic behavior. A novel divinylanthracene derivative 9,10-bis((E)-2-(pyridin-4-yl)vinyl)anthracene (BP4VA) was synthesized and its two polymorphs with different crystal structures were obtained. The introduction of pyridine in BP4VA leads to multi-stimuli responsive fluorescence. An investigation of the photophysical and stimuli responsive luminescent properties of BP4VA, including the piezochromism and protonation effect, demonstrates that the piezochromic luminescence originates from changes in the molecular aggregation state. Additionally, protonation–deprotonation of the pyridine moieties in BP4VA has a significant effect on the frontier molecular orbitals, resulting in distinct green and red emissions under acid and base stimuli. This study on BP4VA provides a comprehensive insight into the mechanisms within this type of stimuli-responsive luminescent material, and suggests that BP4VA may be a potential candidate for applications in sensing, detection and display devices with remarkable color-changing properties. A novel organic fluorophor with high solid state luminescent efficiency based on 1,4-bis(2,2-di(pyridin-2-yl)vinyl)benzene (BDP2VB) was designed and synthesized. It emits faintly in solution, but becomes a strong emitter in the aggregate state, demonstrating its aggregation induced emission (AIE) property. According to the crystal structure analysis, J-type aggregation was formed in the packing mode of the molecule, which was demonstrated to be beneficial to gain high fluorescent quantum efficiency in solid state. Two 9,10-distyrylanthracene (DSA) derivatives CNDSA and t-BUDSA were designed and synthesized, and their photophysical properties and crystal structures were investigated. Compared to DSA, the maximum emission peaks of the two compounds showed red-shift not only in THF solution, but also in crystals, because the introduction of electron-withdrawing substituents to DSA leads to more dispersion of the electrons in the molecules. The two crystals of CNDSA and t-BUDSA show strong fluorescence with the efficiency Φ of 45% and 33%, respectively, which may be resulted from no obvious π-π interactions between molecules inside the crystal due to the large distance between the two adjacent molecules and nearly no overlap between the central anthracene planes. The analysis of crystal structures of the two compounds indicated that the molecules are arranged in the same conformation and orientation in their crystals, i.e. uniaxially oriented packing crystal, because of the supramolecular interaction of CH/π in the two crystals and additional C-H...N interactions in CNDSA. A series of poly(p-phenylenevinylene) based polymers (MEH-OXD-PPVs) functionalized with Y-shaped double 1,3,4-oxadiazole-containing side chains were synthesized through a modified Gilch reaction. They are all soluble in common organic solvents such as chloroform, tetrahydronfuran and 1,1,2,2-tetrachloroethane. The chemical structures of MEH-OXD-PPVs were determined by 1H NMR, GPC and elemental analysis. Thermogravimetric analysis shows that they have good thermal stability with the decomposition temperature ranging from 312 °C to 326 °C. The absorption and fluorescence emission maxima of the polymers exhibit an appreciable blue-shift with the increase of oxadiazole-containing moieties. Electrochemical investigation shows that the HOMO energy levels of the polymers vary regularly with the change of content of oxadiazole-containing moieties. Additionally, by introducing more OXD-PV unit during copolymerization, the PL quantum efficiencies of the polymers are significantly enhanced compared to that of MEH-PPV. The successful manipulation of optical and electronic properties of the MEH-OXD-PPVs indicates an effective concept for developing PPV-based functional materials with tunable optoelectronic properties by changing the amount of electron-withdrawing oxadiazole-containing moieties. We successfully synthesized a series of novel symmetrical solution processable small molecules (APPM, AAPM and ATPM) consisting of the electron-accepting moiety (2-pyran-4-ylidenemalononitrile) (PM) and the electron-donating moiety (triphenylamine) linked by different electron-donating moieties (phenothiazine, triphenylamine and thiophene) through a Suzuki coupling reaction. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) measurement indicates that APPM and AAPM shows relatively high glass-transition temperature of ca.137 °C and 163 °C, while the melting point of ATPM is at ca.164 °C. UV-vis absorption spectra show that the combination of the PM moiety with moieties with a gradually increased electron-donating ability results in an enhanced intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) transition, which leads to an extension of the absorption spectral range and a reduction of the band gap of the molecules. Both cyclic voltammetry measurement and theoretical calculations displayed that the highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) energy levels of the molecules could be fine-tuned by changing the electron-donating ability of the electron-donating moieties. The bulk heterojunction (BHJ) photovoltaic devices with a structure of ITO/PEDOT/PSS/small molecules/PCBM/LiF/Al were fabricated by using the small molecules as donors and (6,6)-phenyl C61-butyric acid methyl ester (PCBM) as acceptor. Power conversion efficiencies (PCE) of 0.65%, 0.94% and 1.31% were achieved for the photovoltaic devices based on APPM/PCBM, AAPM/PCBM and ATPM/PCBM under simulated AM 1.5 illumination (100 mW cm−2), respectively. The open circuit voltage of 1.0 V obtained from the device based on ATPM/PCBM is one of the highest values for organic solar cells based on solution processable small molecules.
