The migration of Central Americans to the United States has become a focal point of media and policy debates in recent years. Amid this discourse, there is a notable lack of understanding regarding the arduous journeys undertaken by migrants before they reach the US border. In response to this gap, our project seeks to challenge prevailing media narratives about Central American migrants, drawing inspiration from critical research on race and migration. Conceived as a mobile application, website, and installation, the Migrant Steps Project connects the data produced by users' fitness tracking devices to narratives about migration between Central America and North America. The area where literature, art, music, religion, spirituality, and philosophy split off from, run parallel to each other, and merge again is like a delta. This essay explores the complex interrelations between art and spirituality on three levels. First on the level of spiritual experience, exemplified by experiences of the art of still life (the painter Morandi, the poet Kopland). On the second level, several questions about meaning are analyzed, beginning with the question of meaning posed by the work of art itself. Both art and spirituality presuppose an open and receptive attitude. In philosophical reflections on the meaning of art, some aim primarily at its relevance for our insight into the reality of things, people, and animals, while others are more concerned with its significance for human action. Thirdly, some problems on the level of research are discussed. Research invites us to come to a critical relativization of what we have seen, heard, or read and also allows us to see that the often presupposed 'immediacy' of our experience is in fact mediated by pre-given schemes and habits. Three reasons are given to answer the question why it is meaningful to research these mediations and to search for the authentic meanings of art works (in particular works of literature) themselves. The description of the duel between Gordāfarid and Sohrāb in Ferdowsī's Šāh-nāma carries structural resemblances to the depiction of Penthesilea's fight with Achilles. In the course of combat, the armour of both female warriors is damaged and their true identities are revealed after being defeated by their male opponents. In case of the Amazon from the Greek tale, the sudden revelation of her womanly appeal takes place after her death, whereas Gordāfarid survives the duel, and even manages to go free. A key factor in Ferdowsī's description is the woman's "Greek" helmet, a factor that suggests Ferdowsī borrowed from the Greek story, and also made a reference to Hellenistic and post-Hellenistic depictions of armoured goddesses of the type of Athena, who was widely known across the Ghaznavid territory, where Ferdowsī's work was written and presented. Identifying the limitations in earlier attempts for comparing Euro-American philosophy with Indian, the paper distinguishes its approach and makes a case for an alternative approach. This consists of bending the Euro-American philosophy, without breaking it, for use in India. Following the discussion of major and minor literatures by Deleuze and Guattari in the context of Kafka in Europe, the paper shows the variance between its claims in the context of minor literature and the reality. In this context, it establishes a close relation between modernity and art and literature in Europe, where the latter is sought to reclaim what is rejected by the modern. Modernity rejected the premodern as embodying non-reason. Without abandoning this relation between minor and major, it seeks to show its relevance in India through Indian National Movement and M. K. In this article, questions of public education in both environmental issues and science, more broadly, are examined in an effort to respond to Richard Aldrich’s call for historians of education to use their skills and understanding both to inform the present and to shape a more enlightened future. In particular, the lives and work of three women in science – Marianne North, Rachel Carson and Alice Stewart – are investigated through their art, writings and actions and through autobiographical and biographical material. The focus is on issues of natural history, the environment and the use and misuse of technology arising from their scientific work. In each case, how far they challenged the scientific thinking of their day or extended public understanding is explored while consideration is also made of how they were educated for their scientific careers, what impediments they faced and how far and in what ways they overcame them.
