This seminal study explores systemic sustainability within the Industry 5.0 paradigm, using the strategic lens of geoanthropology to shape the emerging concept of Industry 6.0. A transdisciplinary approach is adopted, integrating geoanthropological insights into the analysis of the Italian ceramic district. Seven key factors are considered: resource consumption, production dynamics, innovation, environmental impact, social impact, market dynamics, and economic impact. Historical events such as changes in Italian industrial policy, market slowdowns, and the COVID-19 pandemic are identified as significant for the sector. A contingent analysis tailored to the unique characteristics of the ceramic district provides an in-depth understanding of its challenges and opportunities. The incorporation of geoanthropology provides a transdisciplinary perspective that allows for an in-depth examination of the complex interactions between people and their environment in an industrial setting. The study highlights the central role of innovation, digitalization, and government policies in driving positive changes in production efficiency, market dynamics, and economic impact. Nevertheless, challenges remain, including the delicate balance between environmental sustainability and resource consumption, as well as the effective management of the social impacts of digitization. To address these challenges, a systemic sustainability index derived from geoanthropological insights is proposed as a pragmatic tool to measure and guide the development of sustainability initiatives in the ceramic district. The results of this study not only pave the way for new horizons in sustainability assessment but also provide valuable insights for industrial district managers to formulate strategies that foster organizational flexibility and resilience. This paper explores to what extent and under what conditions resilience can be developed to cope with radical innovations in the industrial district context. Based on a comparative analysis of an Italian and Spanish cluster, this paper provides and in-depth examination of the transformation at the firm and cluster levels at the introduction, development, and diffusion of disruptive technologies, that enable clusters to cope with it and thrive. The importance of social networks in setting-up and running a business is well established in the literature. Experts on informality have concluded that with the development of a country, the informal sector will increasingly turn formal. However, evidence from this study indicates otherwise. This study looks at Surat in India which is one of the largest textile producing cities internationally. The industrial district has numerous informal establishments that form a part of the crucial ecosystem, working in cohesion with the more established 'formal' firms. The study examines the roles that social networks play in sustaining the textile industry. The research infers that social networks are crucial to run a business in the Surat textile market as all transactions take place through informal contracts, which are grounded on trust-based 'references', thereby making a strong network structure a key requirement. Purpose: This paper aims to investigate the evolution of the phenomenon of industrial districts and explores the broader regional innovation systems that consist of multiple industrial districts. Design/methodology/approach: This paper uses a combination of network analysis and patent analysis techniques to analyze the social structure of Montreal tech agglomeration and its innovation. Findings: The findings indicate that the cores of modern regional innovation systems are composed of densely collaborating organizations belonging to different industrial clusters, and these organizations are responsible for the most radical innovations. The analysis also reveals the importance of brokers and international ties in generating radical innovations. Research limitations/implications: The findings of our paper extend the initial concept of industrial district and call for the need to no longer focus exclusively on individual clusters, but to take into consideration broader competitive regional innovation systems that are composed of multiple clusters. The current trend of the core of such systems to be composed of organizations from multiple clusters indicates that the traditional understanding of industrial district confined to the borders of specific industry is no longer relevant and there is a need to revise the conceptualization of clusters and further analyze the social fabric of broader regional innovation systems. In future, such intense collaboration within the core of the regional innovation system network may give rise to new industrial and technological configurations. It is important to further investigate these structures, because they have important implications for innovation and are responsible for new innovation patterns. Practical implications: To boost innovation in specific localities, policymakers could encourage collaboration between different clusters and support interdisciplinary projects and programs. Those would help the local community generate radical innovations. Social implications: Using this research, local policymakers could help local companies understand and explore international markets, as well as focus on attracting multinational firms that are leaders in their respective fields. Purpose: Inquiring about the patterns of interaction within clusters can provide a valuable insight into the cooperation and competition strategies followed by firms. However, such internal patterns are difficult to identify using conventional methods. This study aims to apply a social network analysis approach to identify and analyze different sub-groups of firms within a dairy cluster. These sub-groups seem to respond to different forms of productive organization, with different levels of territorial anchorage. Design/methodology/approach: The authors study the dairy cluster in the south-west of Uruguay, where one of the country's main industries is located. The authors use data from semi-structured interviews applied to managing directors of 40 dairy industrial firms. The authors analyze the collaboration network among firms and industry support organizations. Using a community detection algorithm, the authors identify strategic groups of firms and organizations within the network. The authors analyze information from the interviews to delve deeper into the strategies pursued by actors in each of these sub-groups. Findings: The four groups identified by the algorithm respond to particular logics associated not only with collaborative behavior, but also with territorial distribution and competitive strategies pursued by firms. In particular, these communities show a positive association between the centrality of their nodes in the network, the size of their firms, their export orientation and their innovative capacity. These associations indicate the co-existence, within the cluster, of different local productive systems and other forms of productive organization. Originality/value: The paper illustrates how different strategies of firms within a cluster can be understood using social network analysis. This approach is particularly interesting in agri-food clusters, where their wider dispersion in the territory often implies their firms following different collaborative and competitive strategies, and different levels of territorial anchorage. The digitalization of cultural heritage is crucial for revamping the creative and cultural sectors during a period of stagnation. This work is about the revitalization of the Kyoto kimono cluster through digitalization, which initiated a new exaptive development path for a declining cluster. A growing community of economic geographers and regional scientists has begun to discuss regional path development beyond related and unrelated diversification. We focus on path renewal, which involves major change of a path into a new direction based on new technologies or organizational innovations. Existing knowledge and skills in a region are combined in new ways and may be linked to relevant extra-regional knowledge to provide new knowledge, enabling innovation and entrepreneurship in the region. The process encompasses the intentional and serendipitous actions of individual entrepreneurs (firm-level) and networks of systemic configurations (system-level). Industrial networks have evolved from aggregations of a number of suppliers around a few final producers, towards more balanced organisations of small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) that within the European industrial system, today compose by more than 95% of all small-mid enterprises in the non-financial sector. The crucial character of a SME aggregation into a cluster is the existence of an effective collaboration among SMEs possibly supported by clear interactions (e.g. production flows and information), by a commonly recognised management objective and by well assessed connections with external markets. Based on these conditions, the paper first discusses a general conceptual model of a SME cluster, making evidence of the above-mentioned three basic characters of the cluster itself. Then, the conceptual model is used to formalise a SME cluster and its organisation in terms of amid-term cluster management optimisation problem. The model can help a cluster management and control unit in evaluating the cluster performance and the positive effects of an effective collaboration among SMEs. Based on the formal general model, a survey of typical SME clusters in some European countries is presented in order to compare the different types of SME aggregations and of their collaborative frames. This paper deals with the location, origins, and early development of clusters and industrial districts in the agribusiness sector. It considers the case of the meat processing industry in the second half of the 19th century in Catalonia, a prosperous southern-European region in the period when this industry emerged. By constructing an index of potential locations at the municipal level, the paper discusses whether, and to what extent, deterministic factors explain the genesis of pigmeat processing clusters. The paper concludes that although these latter factors need primary consideration, contingency, particularly human agency, may also play a non-negligible role. As an illustration, this study pays particular attention to the cluster of Vic, which developed around this middle-sized town in central Catalonia. It became a leading meat cluster in early 20th-century Spain, even though it was not better suited to this industry than other Catalan localities where meat companies had also emerged. The book published by French medievalist Catherine Verna L’industrie au village (2017) raises a double question: on the one hand because it uses the term industry in reference to the Middle Ages, and on the other because it associates the same term with the village, i.e. rurality, whereas medieval industry – at least for those who think it is possible to talk about industry during these times – is traditionally associated with cities rather than the countryside. In the introduction of the book, Verna conducts a historiographical review of the concept of industry, limited to only French medievalists. This paper endeavors a similar review but focused on Italian historiography, illustrating how the concept of industry appears no clearer to Italian medievalists than it does to French ones. In addition, it discusses the definition of industry proposed by Verna – in order to determine whether it is appropriate or not to talk about “industry in the pre-industrial times” – and analyzes what the author means by the expression “industry in the village”. In particular, it pays attention to the concepts of small town and industrial district developed by Verna within her case study (the Pyrenean village of Arles-sur-Tech and the Vallespir localities in the 14th and 15th centuries), i.e. two concepts that constitute valuable interpretive keys for the history of medieval and modern Italy. The objective of this article is to demonstrate the evolutionary and comparative analysis of textile industry clusters in the world, in Brazil and in the state of Minas Gerais, pointing to the latter, the importance for the region, the strengths/weaknesses and their differentials. This study is focused on how Industry 4.0 is diffused within a Marshallian industrial district (MID) through collective action. It explains how MIDs adopt Industry 4.0 through collective initiatives for digitization, bypassing many barriers to change through the utilization of a collective project built upon a key feature of MIDs: cooperation. Results from interviews show a real living lab built upon a place-based bottom-up-oriented policy initiative co-designed by policymakers, collective actors and local firms, aimed at facilitating transition into Industry 4.0 in the Toy Valley district in the Valencia region of Spain. The aim of this paper is to adopt the absorptive capacity (ACAP) framework to understand radical innovation in industrial districts (IDs), adopting a multi-level perspective. By performing a longitudinal case study on an ID that has successfully introduced a radical innovation – the plastic ski boot innovation developed within the Montebelluna Sportsystem district in Italy – the paper highlights how key elements of the ACAP framework (i.e. its components, antecedents, and contingent factors) allow understanding wherein IDs might indeed successfully introduce radical innovations, and what are the specificities as respect as considering a single organisation as unit of analysis. Place leadership (PL) influences the capability of places hit by disruptive challenges to react and reroute to new paths of development. Recent contributions consider the positive role of PL, while negative aspects are still under-investigated. This paper proposes a conceptual framework that, focusing on local productive systems (LPSs), explores PL's dark side. Forms of PL accompanying LPSs show different degrees of openness and strength that interact with the same LPS structural features. Enclosed forms of PL, aiming to preserve restricted and well-established interests, might intentionally resist attempts of LPS rerouting if undermining such interests, albeit beneficial to the system overall. The study explores the key contributory factors in the success of immigrant entrepreneurs in disseminating technical knowledge in host economies. Based on a study of the Lyon Barcelona textile printing firm in Premià de Mar, we show how the introduction of screen printing in 1933 eventually stimulated the creation of a cluster specialised in the manufacture of printing moulds. The knowhow provided by the new technique was transferred from the factory itself and disseminated to new small businesses that were set up in and around the town of Premià. Thanks to the vision of an immigrant entrepreneur, who saw the potential of the new business inside the pre-existing industrial framework in Catalonia, and his close collaboration with local managers, this cross-border business initiative had a decisive impact on the host economy. This study aims to provide a better understanding of the effect of social networks on innovation through the analysis of territorial agglomerations of firms. Critical voices argue that the same mechanisms that form the basis of efficient, continuous improvements of clustered firms can also be considered as limitations. We suggest that the impact of social capital decreases beyond a certain point of development. In fact, the effect of social interactions and trust on firm value creation can be described as an inverted U-shaped curve. The study is based on a sample of 154 firms in the Valencia region of Spain. Implications of the study have relevant prescriptions for regional planners and individual entrepreneurs. The type of regional innovation system (RIS) strongly affects possibilities of paths of industrial transformation. This paper argues that traditional manufacturing districts, corresponding to specialized RISs and characterized by various nuclei of specialization and know-how, may foster different trajectories in combination with extra-regional networks. In particular, the paper analyses the interplay between regional and national innovation systems, providing an overview of the effect that different multilevel dynamics have on local trajectories. Purpose: This paper aims to know the dimension and scope that research on the district effect has had in the literature about industrial districts, as well as to shed some light on the connection between industrial districts and business results; or expressed differently, on how being located in an industrial district or not affects or might influence the performance of the firms located therein. Design/methodology/approach: The purpose of this paper has been achieved through an exhaustive review of the empirical literature dedicated to the so-called district effect. The papers selected in the analysis were selected on the basis of the following criteria: (1) publications in scientific journals; (2) studies carried out in Spain and Italy; and (3) works published between 1994 and 2017. Findings: The outcome of the literature review suggests, on the one hand, that the debate on the extent to which the territory influences the competitiveness of firms located in industrial districts still remains a topic of great interest. It can additionally be observed that most of the works dedicated to measuring the district effect have done so using three dimensions: (1) productivity/efficiency; (2) international competitiveness; and (3) innovation. Practical implications: From a theoretical perspective, the findings of this paper make it possible to carry out an integrating proposal for the measurement of the district effect which revolves around three dimensions (productivity/efficiency; international competitiveness; and innovation). Originality/value: This paper makes a twofold contribution to the literature: (i) it brings together the most important empirical contributions that measure the competitive advantages obtained by firms located in industrial districts through the district effect; and (ii) it theoretically and empirically establishes the essential dimensions of that effect. This paper addresses territorial servitization in manufacturing systems of small and medium-sized enterprises, introducing a framework for the interpretation of changes in local productive configurations and the assessment of territorial servitization trajectories. It includes three main variables: multiplicity of know-hows, transaction costs and the entrepreneurial drive. Moreover, it proposes a mixed methodology that elaborates proxies of these variables for empirical analysis. The methodology is tested by investigating the changing features of an archetypal case of Italian industrial district, the textile district of Prato, throughout the period 2005-13. This paper deals with the evolution of place-based division of labour, considering in particular the dynamics of differentiated pools of knowledge that can be embedded in local production systems such as industrial districts. Drawing on conceptual framework of Marshallian industrial districts, the paper develops a model that links knowledge dynamics to possible tendencies towards either industrial progress, lock-in, transition or decline of such systems. The paper analyses the transformations that occurred in the Italian industrial districts (IDs) by empirically estimating the role of the 'district effect' on firm performance over recent decades. Given their ability to manage upper-level and size-related business practices, medium-sized firms emerge as local players best able to exploit their embeddedness in the districtual system and leverage districtual assets. However, these effects are only present in firms belonging to the industrial specialization of the district. An additional result of the empirical analysis shows that the leading role of medium-sized firms is critical in younger districts, where medium-sized firms lead the renewal of the ID and its adaptation to the changes of the competitive environment. As most Italian IDs are specialized in traditional sectors, this evidence contributes to understanding the mechanisms connecting the competitiveness of the traditional industry and its localised organizational structure. The paper also provides a discussion of the future of IDs—including the relevance of the evolutionary stage of the district on the performance of affiliated firms—and their reproducibility over time. The local tourism production system has been used in the literature as a territorial model to analyse a tourism destination and examine the interrelationships among its stakeholders. In this paper, we elaborate on this model by additionally analysing the economic linkages of the local tourism production system activities with local sectors, and seek to examine whether Messinia, a region in south-western Greece, fulfils the conditions for the operation of a local tourism production system. For this purpose, in conjunction with secondary data, 276 questionnaires were used from a business survey conducted via personal interviews at enterprises that are directly or indirectly affected by tourism. The results of the analysis show that our study area fulfils all four criteria set for the operation of such a system, though it does display strengths (high concentration of small- and medium-sized enterprises, strong economic linkages) and weaknesses (marginal specialisation, unsteady social ties). Meanwhile, the operation of a large tourism enterprise in the region does not act competitively but rather as a propulsive activity to the local tourism production system, thus supporting the notion that a large enterprise can boost a local production system and extending it within the tourism context. The paper concludes that investigating the economic linkages of the local tourism production system activities allows for a more accurate assessment of its operation, which in our case could be further enhanced by establishing a focal actor in a tourism network or cluster. The European footwear industry has recently faced another stage of considerable restructuring, in terms of its geography, the spatiality of value chains and the strategic focus of its lead firms. Drivers have been the crisis of Fordism, political-economic changes in Europe and the world, and the emerging dominance of fashion on the markets, all of these factors unfolding at different times and speeds. The paper takes stock of the sector's shifting geography by reviewing relevant literature on footwear districts in the European Union, augmented by document analyses. Upgrading footwear to a fashion industry generated an altered intra-European spatial division of labour under the double imperative of investing in market access and achieving low production costs. A variety of footwear companies have emerged that have affected the dynamics of former and actual footwear districts by increasingly creating production networks between different production spaces in Europe. Purpose The purpose of this paper is to offer clarity on a central concept introduced in Porter’s The Competitive Advantage of Nations, i.e. the cluster. The authors situate the concept introduced by Porter (1990) relative to two of its antecedents, the industrial district and industrial complex. Placing the cluster in a historical context permits consideration of the extent to which it, as a concept for analysis, may be differentiated from other geography-based approaches to economic phenomena. In this way, this paper examines the added value of the cluster concept derived from economic factors.Design/methodology/approach The paper provides a detailed literature review tracing the evolution of theories of location and agglomeration into which Porter’s cluster fits. The evolution of Porter’s own conceptualisation of the cluster and how this relates to theoretical clarity surrounding the concept is explored. Comparative analysis of theories of location, agglomeration and clustering is provided to identify similarities and differences across the approaches and identify the added value of the cluster concept in relation to other approaches.Findings Clustering represents a process associated with spatial organisational form which may offer advantages in efficiency, effectiveness and flexibility. Cluster benefits can be appreciated through the lens of Young’s (1928) identified sources of increasing returns. A key aspect in clustering is revealed in terms of its role in enabling four sources of increasing returns. The authors outline how these sources of increasing returns are related to “soft” processes of networking, interaction and individual and collective learning. Porter’s Diamond is a self-reinforcing system which can permit increasing returns and reinforce such tendencies of economic activity within agglomerations.Originality/value Added value from Porter’s cluster concept is identified in the context of both its locational anchoring and in terms of its potential for understanding the role of exploitation of increasing returns for development. This points to the importance of focusing on clustering as a process rather than on cluster within typologies of organisational form. This implies that the nature of relationships (and how they change) within and across markets, institutions and actors lies at the heart of clustering because of their roles in knowledge-generation, including innovation, knowledge sharing and upgrading. The emergence of new technologies together with the process of globalization and global outsourcing raise a question mark over the potential advantages of locating in an industrial district. In this context, there is a clear need for new studies to investigate whether the district effect still exists in these new circumstances. We propose that the increased availability of social capital, knowledge, and innovation would justify the firms in industrial districts obtaining competitive advantages and, therefore, greater levels of performance over the rest of the companies in an industry, allowing us to explore why the district effect is maintained in the current circumstances. The development of this study, in the footwear industry in Spain, has allowed us to analyze the existence of significant differences between industrial district firms and firms outside industrial districts. The results obtained in our study show that agglomerated firms, that is, firms located within industrial districts, achieve a greater performance than firms outside the industrial districts. With this study, we contribute to a deeper analysis of the competitive differences arising from the district effect. On one hand, we analyze if the competitive advantages of companies located in the districts will reveal differences in the obtained performance—growth, profitability, innovation performance, and general performance. We also analyze three key competitive factors in the competitive dynamics of industrial districts, with particular attention to social capital. Purpose - The purpose of this paper is to discuss the changes of the Italian textile district of Prato, considered an exemplary case of the industrial district (ID) model, using a business network perspective. The "Black Swan" metaphor is used to address the changes in the Prato textile district in order to understand whether such changes have been an unexpected and unpredictable phenomenon, or they can be explain with a different theoretical tool-box, namely, that developed by the industrial network approach. Design/methodology/approach - The paper utilizes already published studies on the changes of the textile/fashion companies located to the Prato area. Both studies that have been carried out within an ID approach and those carried out with an Industrial Marketing and Purchasing (IMP) point of departure are considered in the research. Both types of studies were utilized to identify empirical observed changes of the producer, respectively user setting that the Prato located companies was related to, including identification of changes affecting both the local setting and the larger network it was related to. Findings - The utilization of the IMP model proposes a learning ground that exceed the local context and open ups of investigations of opportunities and threats stemming from interactions across spatial borders. Analysed from an interactive point of view, in the specific context of Prato, the exploitation of the opportunities given by establishing relationship between natives and migrants actors goes through the creation of interactions among actors representing specific resource combinations and activity structures - within and outside the local community. Originality/value - The paper concerns how the same research object - the changes of the Prato district - appears from another perspective different from the ID theory, namely, the industrial network approach developed by scholars of the IMP Group. Drawing on a multilevel framework of Marshallian external economies, we present a perspective on the foundations of enterprise policies across different levels of government. In so doing, we add complexity to the traditional approach to industrial districts, which often disregards the role of supra-local policies. The argument is based on the idea that the main task of policy-makers is not just to provide generic public goods for communities of people defined by administrative boundaries, but also to support the provision of public goods that strengthen the competitiveness and innovative capacity of social and productive systems functioning at various territorial scales, from that of compact centres of industry to the nation-state and beyond. This paper aims to analyze the proximity effect on innovation intensity conducted by Co-located firms in Tunisia. From the work of economics proximity and neo institutionalisms, we recall theoretical arguments of proximity effects on radical and incremental innovation in conglomerated firms. Regression logistic results performed by a survey with 44 ICT Co-located firms within an industrial district in Tunis shows that proximity has a positive and favorable effect on technological innovation intensity. In addition, results from empirical analyze confirm that the determinants are different between radical and incremental innovation. In fact, radical innovation is explained essentially by R&D activities as well as cognitive and organizational factors. The industrial district and cluster literature has generated an extraordinary quantity of articles, debates and topics for discussion, and encompasses one of the most vibrant lines of research in the field of economics, geography, management and related disciplines. The literature, however, is fairly fragmented. In this paper, “bibliometric” methods are used to analyse the cluster literature published between 1957 and 2014 in order to explore “prospective” research priorities through the method of “bibliographic coupling”. Beyond focusing on foundational works in the past, this approach shifts the focus away from the practice of analysing co-citations and seminal contributions to one of looking at current and emerging trends in the literature. Using the ISI Web of Knowledge (Web of Science) as a database, an examination of two samples of 3955 and 2419 articles is made. Results reveal the existence of sub-fields of inquiry that follow their own particular research agendas, which remain distinct yet interconnected to one another. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]
