Variations in day length, or photoperiodism, whether natural or artificial light, significantly impact biological, physiological, and behavioral processes within the brain. Both natural and artificial light sources are environmental factors that significantly influence brain functions and mental well-being. Photoperiodism is a phenomenon, occurring either over a 24 h cycle or seasonally and denotes all biological responses of humans and animals to these fluctuations in day and night length. Conversely, artificial light occurrence refers to the presence of light during nighttime hours and/or its absence during the daytime (unnaturally long and short days, respectively). Light at night, which is a form of light pollution, is prevalent in many societies, especially common in certain emergency occupations. Moreover, individuals with certain mental disorders, such as depression, often exhibit a preference for darkness over daytime light. Nevertheless, disturbances in light patterns can have negative consequences, impacting brain performance through similar mechanisms albeit with varying degrees of severity. Furthermore, changes in day length lead to alterations in the activity of receptors, proteins, ion channels, and molecular signaling pathways, all of which can impact brain health. This review aims to summarize the mechanisms by which day length influences brain functions through neural circuits, hormonal systems, neurochemical processes, cellular activity, and even molecular signaling pathways. Flowering in plants is pivotal for initiating and advancing reproductive processes, impacting regional adaptation and crop yield. Despite numerous cloned and identified flowering time genes, research in cotton remains sparse. This study identified GhSWEET42 as a key determinant of the flowering time in cotton, demonstrating that its heterologous expression in Arabidopsis accelerated flowering under LD conditions compared to WT. Transgenic plants exhibited upregulated expression of the flowering inducers AtFT, AtSOC1, AtGI, and AtFKF1, alongside downregulated expression of the repressors AtTSF, AtFLC, and AtRGL2, correlating with the earlier flowering phenotype. GhSWEET42 showed a constitutive expression pattern, with elevated levels in the leaves, petals, and flower buds, and was notably higher in early-maturing cotton varieties. Subcellular localization assays confirmed GhSWEET42's presence on the cell membrane. Transcriptome analysis between WT and GhSWEET42-overexpressing Arabidopsis plants revealed 2393 differentially expressed genes (DEGs), spanning 221 biological processes, 93 molecular functions, and 37 cellular components according to Gene Ontology (GO) enrichment analysis. Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) pathway analysis categorized the DEGs into metabolism and environmental information processing. The photoperiod is a major environmental factor in flowering control. Water spinach flowering under the inductive short-day condition decreases the yield of vegetative tissues and the eating quality. To obtain an insight into the molecular mechanism of the photoperiod-dependent regulation of the flowering time in water spinach, we performed transcriptome sequencing on water spinach under long- and short-day conditions with eight time points. Our results indicated that there were 6615 circadian-rhythm-related genes under the long-day condition and 8691 under the short-day condition. The three key circadian-rhythm genes, IaCCA1, IaLHY, and IaTOC1, still maintained single copies and similar IaCCA1, IaLHY, and IaTOC1 feedback expression patterns, indicating the conservation of reverse feedback. In the photoperiod pathway, highly conserved GI genes were amplified into two copies (IaGI1 and IaGI2) in water spinach. The significant difference in the expression of the two genes indicates functional diversity. Although the photoperiod core gene FT was duplicated to three copies in water spinach, only IaFT1 was highly expressed and strongly responsive to the photoperiod and circadian rhythms, and the almost complete inhibition of IaFT1 in water spinach may be the reason why water spinach does not bloom, no matter how long it lasts under the long-day condition. Differing from other species (I. nil, I. triloba, I. trifida) of the Ipomoea genus that have three CO members, water spinach lacks one of them, and the other two CO genes (IaCO1 and IaCO2) encode only one CCT domain. In addition, through weighted correlation network analysis (WGCNA), some transcription factors closely related to the photoperiod pathway were obtained. Flowering time influences reproductive success in plants and has a significant impact on yield in grain crops. Flowering time is regulated by a variety of environmental factors, with daylength often playing an important role. Crops can be categorized into different types according to their photoperiod requirements for flowering. For instance, long-day crops include wheat (Triticum aestivum), barley (Hordeum vulgare), and pea (Pisum sativum), while short-day crops include rice (Oryza sativa), soybean (Glycine max), and maize (Zea mays). Understanding the molecular regulation of flowering and genotypic variation therein is important for molecular breeding and crop improvement. This study was conducted in the plastic house - Nursery of the Duhok University - Duhok governorate-Kurdistan region-Iraq from the period 10th Apr. 2021 to 10th Jan. 2022. This study aimed to investigate the effect of supplemental light (light and without light), pinching (pinching and without pinching) and number of plants per pot (2, 3, and 4) plants/pot on the growth and flowering of chrysanthemum (Dendranthema grandiflora Tzvelev) plant. The results showed that supplemental light for one month delayed the flower bud emergence (223.08) days, and flower anthesis (241.58) days compared with the control (without supplemental light) that gave (198.83, 218.44) days for the two characteristics respectively. Further, supplemental light gave the best results for flower length, flower diameter, flower number, and vase life compared to (without supplemental light). Pinching delayed the flower bud emergence and decreased the plant high, growth index, flower diameter, and vase life of cut flower significantly while it significantly increased the flower diameter and vasa life. Increasing the number of plants per pot to 4 plants caused a significant increment in flower number (8.25) compared with 2 plants which gave 5.64 plants/pot. The triple interaction showed significant differences in all characteristics and number of days to flower bud emergence and flower anthesis were the highest mean for the supplemental light with or without the pinch and 2 plants/pot. Also, the best plant height (72.33) cm and growth index (26761) cm³ were recorded without supplemental light, without pinch with 2 plants/pot. Photoperiodic flowering aligns plant reproduction to favourable seasons of the year to maximise successful production of seeds and grains. However understanding of this process in the temperate legumes of the Fabaceae family, which are important both agriculturally and ecologically, is incomplete. Previous work in the reference legume Medicago truncatula has shown that the FT-like gene MtFTa1 is a potent floral activator. While MtFTa1 is upregulated by long-day photoperiods (LD) and vernalisation, the molecular basis of this is unknown as functional homologues of key regulatory genes present in other species, notably CONSTANS in A. thaliana, have not been identified. In LD MtFTa1 maintains a near constant diurnal pattern of expression unlike its homologue FT in A. thaliana, which has a notable peak in expression at dusk. This suggests a different manner of regulation. Furthermore, M. truncatula possesses other FT-like genes such as two LD induced MtFTb genes which may also act in the regulation of flowering time. MtFTb genes have a diurnal pattern of expression with peaks at both four and sixteen hours after dawn. This study utilises RNA-Seq to analyse the transcriptome of M. truncatula leaves to identify genes which may regulate or be co-expressed with these FT-like genes following a shift from short-day photoperiods to inductive long-days. Specifically this study focuses on the first four hours of the day in the young leaves, which coincides with the first diurnal peak of the FTb genes. Following differential expression analysis at each timepoint, genes which alter their pattern of expression are distinguished from those which just alter their magnitude of expression (and those that do neither). It goes on to categorise these genes into groups with similar patterns of expression using c-means clustering and identifies a number of potential candidate photoperiod flowering time genes for future studies to consider. The effect of photoperiod (day:night ratio) on flowering time was investigated in the wild species, Setaria viridis, and in a set of recombinant inbred lines (RILs) derived from a cross between foxtail millet (S. italica) and its wild ancestor green foxtail (S. viridis). Photoperiods totaled 24 h, with three trials of 8:16, 12:12 and 16:8 light:dark hour regimes for the RIL population, and these plus 10:14 and 14:10 for the experiments with S. viridis alone. The response of S. viridis to light intensity as well as photoperiod was assessed by duplicating photoperiods at two light intensities (300 and 600 mmol.m-2.s-1). In general, day lengths longer than 12 h delayed flowering time, although flowering time was also delayed in shorter day-lengths relative to the 12 h trial, even when daily flux in high intensity conditions exceeded that of the low intensity 12 h trial. Cluster analysis showed that the effect of photoperiod on flowering time differed between sets of RILs, with some being almost photoperiod insensitive and others being delayed with respect to the population as a whole in either short (8 or 12 h light) or long (16 h light) photoperiods. QTL results reveal a similar picture, with several major QTL colocalizing between the 8 and 12 h light trials, but with a partially different set of QTL identified in the 16 h trial. Major candidate genes for these QTL include several members of the PEBP protein family that includes Flowering Locus T (FT) homologs such as OsHd3a, OsRFT1, and ZCN8/12. Thus, Setaria is a short day plant (flowering quickest in short day conditions) whose flowering is delayed by long day lengths in a manner consistent with the responses of most other members of the grass family. Precise timing of flowering is critical to crop adaptation and productivity in a given environment. A number of classical E genes controlling flowering time and maturity have been identified in soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merr.]. The public availability of the soybean genome sequence has accelerated the identification of orthologues of Arabidopsis flowering genes and their functional analysis, and has allowed notable progress towards understanding the molecular mechanisms of flowering in soybean. Great progress has been made particularly in identifying genes and modules that inhibit flowering in long-day conditions, because a reduced or absent inhibition of flowering by long daylengths is an essential trait for soybean, a short-day (SD) plant, to expand its adaptability toward higher latitude environments. In contrast, the molecular mechanism of floral induction by SDs remains elusive in soybean. Here we present an update on recent work on molecular mechanisms of flowering under long days and of stem growth habit, outlining the progress in the identification of genes responsible, the interplay between photoperiod and age-dependent miRNA-mediated modules, and the conservation and divergence in photoperiodic flowering and stem growth habit in soybean relative to other legumes, Arabidopsis, and rice (Oryza sativa L.). The induction of flowering under long-day conditions is an important adaptation by short-day plants, such as adzuki beans ( Vigna angularis), to high-latitude environments. This study clarified the genetic control underlying the long-day insensitivity of adzuki bean cultivar 'Shumari'. 'Shumari' was found to be insensitive to a 16-h day, whereas landrace Acc2265 was highly sensitive. When grown under natural long-day conditions at Obihiro (42°9′N), Acc2265 initiated flowering at least 80 days after 'Shumari'. When 86 recombinant inbred lines ( RILs) derived from crosses between 'Shumari' and Acc2265 were grown under these conditions, their flowering dates ranged from the middle of July to the end of October. The distinct bimodal distribution in the RIL population was due to a single major gene, designated Flowering Date1 ( FD1). Molecular mapping showed that FD1 was located between the SSR markers Az02-37M3 and Az02-40M9, at distances of 6 and 10.4 cM, respectively, on linkage group 2. Lolium perenne (ryegrass) is a perennial forage grass of worldwide importance. It is a temperate climate grass and flowering is induced by long day photoperiods. The agronomic productivity of ryegrass is strongly influenced by flowering time, but less is known about ryegrass flowering time regulators in other temperate Poaceae like wheat, barley and the model grass Brachypodium. The GIGANTEA ( GI) gene was first identified in Arabidopsis and is an important regulator of photoperiodic flowering in angiosperms. GI usually exists as a conserved, single-copy gene. However, recently, genome sequencing has revealed that some plants, including the tropical grass maize, carry more than one full-length copy of GI. Here we describe the isolation and characterisation of the ryegrass L. perenne GIGANTEA gene ( LpGI) gene. Comparative genomic analysis indicates that LpGI gene structure is very well conserved overall with GI genes from monocots and eudicots. LpGI protein clusters with GI proteins from other temperate grasses and is most closely related to the GI protein from meadow fescue. Genetic mapping locates LpGI to a chromosomal region that is syntenic with rice and Brachypodium GI. Our functional characterisation shows that LpGI shows a diurnal pattern of expression, continues to oscillate under constant light and adjusts its phase in response to changes in day length as seen in other plants. Constitutive expression of LpGI completely rescues the Arabidopsis gigantea- 3 allele ( gi- 3) mutation, confirming that the isolated ryegrass gene is fully functional. Young seedlings of the conifer Norway spruce exhibit short day (SD)-induced cessation of apical growth and bud set. Although different, constant temperatures under SD are known to modulate timing of bud set and depth of dormancy with development of deeper dormancy under higher compared to lower temperature, systematic studies of effects of alternating day (DT) and night temperatures (NT) are limited. To shed light on this, seedlings of different provenances of Norway spruce were exposed to a wide range of DT-NT combinations during bud development, followed by transfer to forcing conditions of long days (LD) and 18°C, directly or after different periods of chilling. Although no specific effect of alternating DT/NT was found, the results demonstrate that the effects of DT under SD on bud set and subsequent bud break are significantly modified by NT in a complex way. The effects on bud break persisted after chilling. Since time to bud set correlated with the daily mean temperature under SD at DTs of 18 and 21°C, but not a DT of 15°C, time to bud set apparently also depend on the specific DT, implying that the effect of NT depends on the actual DT. Although higher temperature under SD generally results in later bud break after transfer to forcing conditions, the fastest bud flush was observed at intermediate NTs. This might be due to a bud break-hastening chilling effect of intermediate compared to higher temperatures, and delayed bud development to a stage where bud burst can occur, under lower temperatures. Also, time to bud burst in un-chilled seedlings decreased with increasing SD-duration, suggesting that bud development must reach a certain stage before the processes leading to bud burst are initiated. The present results also indicate that low temperature during bud development had a larger effect on the most southern compared to the most northern provenance studied. Decreasing time to bud burst was observed with increasing northern latitude of origin in un-chilled as well as chilled plants. In conclusion, being a highly temperature-dependent process, bud development is strongly delayed by low temperature, and the effects of DT is significantly modified by NT in a complex manner. The seasonal change in photoperiod is a primary environmental signal influencing tree growth. Long days (LD) sustain growth, whereas short days (SD) induce winter bud formation. In this respect, metabolomic responses have been studied to a limited extent only in conifers. Here we identified changes in metabolite profile in the conifer Norway spruce after transition to SD and following re-transfer to LDs inducing bud flush. After 1 week in SD initial changes in metabolite profile was visible but for the majority of compounds magnitudes of changes were small. However, the ascorbate content was strongly reduced and there were often temporary increases in several energy metabolism-related compounds, secondary metabolites, nucleosides, amino acids and lipids. After 8 weeks in SD substantial changes were observed; proper winter buds had high pools of ABA, antioxidants, flavonoids, terpenoids, phenylpropanoids, sugars, amino acids and lipids related to stress tolerance and hardening, and low levels of nucleosides and metabolites in energy metabolism. One week after re-transfer to LD the metabolome was generally relatively similar to under long-term SD, except e.g. increased urate and strongly decreased ABA and oxidized glutathione. Two weeks later, bud flush had occurred, and the metabolite profile resembled the situation before transfer to SD. This study thus revealed comprehensive modulation of the metabolome in Norway spruce in response to a day length shift, indicating substantially increased stress resistance under SD-induced bud set, and reversal upon bud flush in LD. In the present study, three closely related Linderniaceae species which differ in their sensitivity to desiccation are compared in response to light and oxidative stress defence. Lindernia brevidens, a desiccation-tolerant plant, displayed intense purple pigmentation in leaves under long-day conditions in contrast to Craterostigma plantagineum (desiccation tolerant) and Lindernia subracemosa (desiccation sensitive). The intense pigmentation in leaves does not affect the desiccation tolerance behaviour but seems to be related to oxidative stress protection. Green leaves of short-day and purple leaves of long-day plants provided suitable material for comparing basic photosynthetic parameters. An increase in non-photochemical quenching in purple leaves appears to prevent photoinhibition. Treatment with methyl viologen decreased the photochemical activities in both long-day and short-day plants but long-day plants which accumulate anthocyanins maintained a higher non-photochemical quenching than short-day plants. No differences were seen in the expression of desiccation-induced proteins and proteins involved in carbohydrate metabolism in short-day and long-day grown plants, whereas differences were observed in the expression of transcripts encoding chloroplast-localised stress proteins and transcripts encoding antioxidant enzymes. While the expression of genes encoding antioxidant enzymes were either constitutive or up-regulated during desiccation in C. plantagineum, the expression was down-regulated in L. subracemosa. RNA expression analysis indicated degradation of mRNA during desiccation in L. subracemosa but not in desiccation tolerant species . Photoperiodic induction of tuberization in potato ( Solanum tuberosum L. Gp. Andigenum) under short days (SDs) is processed via miRNA (e.g. miR172)-mRNA (e.g. StBEL5) and gibberellin (GA) signaling pathways, with spatio-temporal activation of several transcription factors. There is good evidence that the photoreceptor phytochrome B (PHYB) inhibits tuberization under long days (LDs) by producing a graft-transmissible signal. Since it is mostly unknown how PHYB negatively regulates tuberization, the molecular identity of this PHYB-induced LD-inhibitory signal still continues to be elusive. A recent study reported PHYB-mediated photoperiodic regulation of GIGANTEA ( GI), a flowering-control gene of Arabidopsis thaliana and rice, in the leaves of a potato plant. Although GI is long assumed to be involved in the photoperiodic control of potato tuberization as an upstream gene of both CONSTANS and FLOWERING LOCUS T, its exact role could not be elucidated. Thus, its preferential PHYB-dependent upregulation under LDs compared to SDs concomitant with an upregulation of the gene ENT- KAURENOIC ACID OXIDASE ( KAO) that controls an early step in the gibberellin biosynthetic pathway provides an upstream molecular basis for tuberization inhibition in potato by LDs. The results are likely to revisit the roles of several signal molecules that are putatively implicated in the photoperiodic inhibition of tuberization. Given that GI constitutes an evolutionary conserved species-specific LD response pathway in the family Solanaceae, this review argues for an evolutionary basis of tuberization inhibition in potato inherent in its flowering response pathway. The developmental switch from a vegetative phase to reproduction (flowering) is essential for reproduction success in flowering plants, and the timing of the floral transition is regulated by various environmental factors, among which seasonal day-length changes play a critical role to induce flowering at a season favorable for seed production. The photoperiod pathways are well known to regulate flowering time in diverse plants. Here, we summarize recent progresses on molecular mechanisms underlying the photoperiod control of flowering in the long-day plant Arabidopsis as well as the short-day plant soybean; furthermore, the conservation and diversification of photoperiodic regulation of flowering in these two species are discussed. Arabidopsis flowers in long day (LD) in response to signals transported from the photoinduced leaf to the shoot apex. These LD signals may include protein of the gene FLOWERING LOCUS T (FT) while in short day (SD) with its slower flowering, signalling may involve sucrose and gibberellin. Here, it is shown that after 5 weeks growth in SD, a single LD up-regulated leaf blade expression of FT and CONSTANS (CO) within 4–8 h, and flowers were visible within 2–3 weeks. Plants kept in SDs were still vegetative 7 weeks later. This LD response was blocked in ft-1 and a co mutant. Exposure to different LD light intensities and spectral qualities showed that two LD photoresponses are important for up-regulation of FT and for flowering. Phytochrome is effective at a low intensity from far-red (FR)-rich incandescent lamps. Independently, photosynthesis is active in an LD at a high intensity from red (R)-rich fluorescent lamps. The photosynthetic role of a single high light LD is demonstrated here by the blocking of the flowering and FT increase on removal of atmospheric CO2 or by decreasing the LD light intensity by 10-fold. These conditions also reduced leaf blade sucrose content and photosynthetic gene expression. An SD light integral matching that in a single LD was not effective for flowering, although there was reasonable FT-independent flowering after 12 SD at high light. While a single photosynthetic LD strongly amplified FT expression, the ability to respond to the LD required an additional but unidentified photoresponse. Flowering and tuber formation in high-mountain potato species Solanum sparsipilum Bitt., S. acaule Bitt., S. punae Juz., S. demissum Lindl., and a tuber crop Ullucus tuberosus Caldas. were investigated. All these species are characterized by absolute requirement of long day-length for flowering and short day-length for tuberization. Plants were grown under the following conditions: natural day-length with a photoperiod of 17 h or longer (treatment 1), short days with a photoperiod of 12 h and warm nights (15–20°C) (treatment 2), and short days with cold nights (5–6°C) (treatment 3). In the first treatment, plants produced flowers but no tubers. In the second treatment, plants produced tubers but no flowers. In the third treatment, plants produced both flowers and tubers. In leaves of S. acaule and U. tuberosus, the levels of gibberellins and ABA were determined. A high activity of gibberellins in the third treatment was similar to that in the first treatment, whereas high ABA activity in the third treatment was similar to that in the second treatment. It is supposed that cold nights retard the destruction of GA in plants during the dark period of diurnal cycle and ensure a permanently high level of gibberellins, which facilitates flowering of long-day species under short-day conditions. Flowering of cultivated varieties of cotton belonging to G. arboreum, G. herbaceun and G. hirsutum was delayed by over 14 hrs of daylength because of increase in number of days for square formation. The long day treatment in general increased height, production of fruiting branches, leaf area and dry weight per plant. The number of fruiting forms, bolls retained, yield of seed cotton and fruiting coefficient decreased under long day conditions. These characters were affected more in upland varieties and short day Cambodia derivatives. The most of G. arboreum and G. herbaceum varieties became more vegetative in growth but their boll number and yield per plant increased. Since the varieties 1998 F ( G. hirsutum) and Gaorani 1111 ( G. arboreum) were tolerant to long photoperiod and grew satisfactorily, it is suggested that these may be used as donor parents for improving the quality of cottons grown in northern India. Photoperiod is an important signal controlling the onset of dormancy in perennial plants. Short days typically induce growth cessation, the initiation of cold acclimation, the formation of a terminal bud, bud dormancy and other adaptive responses. Photoperiodic ecotypes have evolved in many species with large latitudinal distributions. The photoperiodic responses of two northern (53°35′ and 53°50′N) and two southern (34°10′ and 40°32′N) genotypes of black cottonwood (Populus trichocarpa Torr. & Gray) were characterized by growing trees under a range of photoperiods in the greenhouse and growth chamber. Short days induced bud set in both ecotypes, resulting in trees with fewer leaves and less height growth than trees grown under long days. Short days also enhanced anthocyanin accumulation in the northern ecotype and decreased branching of the southernmost genotype. Two aspects of the photoperiodic response were evaluated for each trait; critical photoperiod, which was defined as the longest photoperiod that elicited a short-day response, and photoperiodic sensitivity, which was defined as the change in response per unit change in photoperiod. For each of the traits analyzed, the northern ecotype had a longer critical photoperiod and greater photoperiodic sensitivity than did the southern ecotype. The short critical photoperiod and reduced photoperiodic sensitivity of the southern ecotype resulted in a significant delay in bud set compared to that of the northern ecotype, even under a 9-h photoperiod. Typically, photoperiodic ecotypes have been characterized as having different critical photoperiods. Ecotypic differences in photoperiodic sensitivity, however, indicate that differences in the photoperiodic response curves cannot be completely described by the critical photoperiod alone. These results also suggest that the critical photoperiod, photoperiodic sensitivity and speed of bud set have a common physiological basis. Bud set occurred earlier in the northern ecotype primarily because bud scale leaves were initiated earlier. For one of the northern genotypes, leaf primordia that were initiated under long days subsequently differentiated into bud scale leaves after the trees were transferred to a 9-h photoperiod. This demonstrates that primordia initiated under long days are not necessarily committed to becoming foliage leaves. Flowering in Poa pratensis L. cv. Holt and Bromus inermis Leyss. cv. Manchar requires exposure to short days (SD) for primary induction to occur, followed by long days (LD) to allow the inflorescence to develop. Weekly sprays with gibberellic acid (GA3) during primary induction inhibited flower initiation in both P. pratensis and B. inermis. With 10−4M GA3 flowering of P. pratensis was suppressed even after an induction period of 10 weeks. Since both GA3 and non‐inductive LD conditions greatly stimulate leaf elongation, the degree of primary induction was closely negatively correlated with plant height (leaf sheath and blade length) at the end of the induction period. GA3 application or the interpolation of LD during SD induction were most inhibitory during the later middle part of the SD period, whereas they were stimulatory near the beginning or immediately before the SD period. We suggest that changes in the portfolio or levels of endogenous gibberellins mediate photoperiodic control of growth and floral initiation in these plants. However, GA3 sprays could not substitute for LD in causing heading and culm elongation in SD induced plants of the two species. The results are discussed in the light of results with other plants with dual floral induction requirements.
