Freezing is one of the convenient ways for the long-term preservation of fruits. However, the ice crystals produced in the freezing process tend to damage the cell structure, resulting in the loss of juice during thawing. Thus, the quality of fruits after thawing is seriously affected. Three methods could be used to optimize the quality of frozen fruits: Using osmotic dehydration, increasing the freezing rate, optimizing the thawing process. In this study, the new techniques used in fruit freezing and thawing were summarized, such as the osmotic dehydration protection, high-pressure, ultrasound, pulse electric field, microwave and magnetic field. The text is a translation from Russian of the first chapter of Soviet theorist Efim Etkind's 1963 work Poeziia i perevod [Poetry and Translation], in slightly abridged form. Etkind is a vital figure within the translation milieu of the 'Thaw' era of the late 1950s and early 1960s, when there was a policy of de-Stalinization and a degree of liberalization. Etkind's insightful work on poetry translation using comparative stylistics reflected, in some ways, the cultural-political environment of the time. It differed radically from the Realist approach of Ivan Kashkin, who was influenced by Socialist Realism and Stalin-era rhetoric. Etkind pushed the boundaries of what could be said about translation. His apparently apolitical approach was in fact strongly politicized in the Soviet context, and his choice of authors and translators to discuss evidenced his sympathy for those out of favor with the regime and for fellow Jews. Total mercury (THg) analysis of fish tissue requires the samples to be frozen for long-term storage or analyzed immediately after the fish sample has been obtained. Such rigid field sampling protocols do not account for the logistical challenges that can occur if sampling is conducted in remote areas or collaboratively via community-based monitoring initiatives. Here we present a study that examines the loss of THg from Walleye tissue that has thawed for 3 and 5 days, mimicking potential thaw during transport from remote locations. THg concentrations were not significantly influenced (Kruskal–Wallace, p-value > 0.05) by the thaw and refreeze events. The mean THg concentration per day group was 0.67 ug/g, SD = 0.03, 0.65 ug/g, SD = 0.01, and 0.72 ug/g, SD = 0.01 for the control (no thaw), 3-day thaw and 5-day thaw, respectively. Results from this study suggest the analytical integrity of samples may be maintained if freeze–thaw situations arise when conducting community-based mercury monitoring programs. Permafrost is a sub-ground phenomenon and therefore cannot be directly observed from space. It is an Essential Climate Variable and associated with climate tipping points. Multi-annual time series of permafrost ground temperatures can be, however, derived through modelling of the heat transfer between atmosphere and ground using landsurface temperature, snow- and landcover observations from space. Results show that the northern hemisphere permafrost ground temperatures have increased on average by about one degree Celsius since 2000. This is in line with trends of permafrost proxies observable from space: surface water extent has been decreasing across the Arctic; the landsurface is subsiding continuously in some regions indicating ground ice melt; hot summers triggered increased subsidence as well as thaw slumps; rock glaciers are accelerating in some mountain regions. The applicability of satellite data for permafrost proxy monitoring has been demonstrated mostly on a local to regional scale only. There is still a lack of consistency of acquisitions and of very high spatial resolution observations. Both are needed for implementation of circumpolar monitoring of lowland permafrost. In order to quantify the impacts of permafrost thaw on the carbon cycle, advancement in wetland and atmospheric greenhouse gas concentration monitoring from space is needed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Topography and canopy cover influence ground temperature in warming permafrost landscapes, yet soil temperature heterogeneity introduced by mesotopographic slope positions, microtopographic differences in vegetation cover, and the subsequent impact of contrasting temperature conditions on soil organic carbon (SOC) dynamics are understudied. Buffering of permafrost‐affected soils against warming air temperatures in boreal forests can reflect surface soil characteristics (e.g., thickness of organic material) as well as the degree and type of canopy cover (e.g., open cover vs. closed cover). Both landscape and soil properties interact to determine meso‐ and microscale heterogeneity of ground warming. We sampled a hillslope catena transect in a discontinuous permafrost zone near Fairbanks, Alaska, to test the small‐scale (1 to 3 m) impacts of slope position and cover type on soil organic matter composition. Mineral active layer samples were collected from backslope, low backslope, and footslope positions at depths spanning 19 to 60 cm. We examined soil mineralogical composition, soil moisture, total carbon and nitrogen content, and organic mat thickness in conjunction with an assessment of SOC composition using Fourier‐transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry (FT‐ICR‐MS). Soils in the footslope position had a higher relative contribution of lignin‐like compounds, whereas backslope soils had more aliphatic and condensed aromatic compounds as determined using FT‐ICR‐MS. The effect of open versus closed tree canopy cover varied with the slope position. On the backslope, we found higher oxidation of molecules under open cover than closed cover, indicating an effect of warmer soil temperature on decomposition. Little to no effect of the canopy was observed in soils at the footslope position, which we attributed, in part, to the strong impact of soil moisture content in SOC dynamics in the water‐gathering footslope position. The thin organic mat under open cover on the backslope position may have contributed to differences in soil temperature and thus SOC oxidation under open and closed canopies. Here, the thinner organic mat did not appear to buffer the underlying soil against warm season air temperatures and thus increased SOC decomposition as indicated by the higher oxidation of SOC molecules and a lower contribution of simple molecules under open cover than the closed canopy sites. Our findings suggest that the role of canopy cover in SOC dynamics varies as a function of landscape position and soil properties, namely, organic mat thickness and soil moisture. Purpose: We aimed to evaluate the effect of extending the culture of cleavage-stage embryos to the blastocyst stage in vitrified–warmed cycles on pregnancy outcomes. Methods: This is a retrospectively designed pilot study of a single center. All patients who applied for freeze-all cycle procedures during in vitro fertilization treatment were included in the study. Patients were classified into three subgroups. The embryos obtained were frozen at the cleavage or blastocyst stage. After a warming process, the cleavage-stage embryos were divided into two subgroups: the first group of embryos was transferred (vitrification day 3–embryo transfer (ET) day 3 (D3T3)) on the warming day; for the second group, the embryo culture was extended to the blastocyst stage (vitrification day 3–ET day 5 (after the extension of the embryo culture to the blastocyst stage), (D3T5)). Frozen blastocyst-stage embryos were transferred after warming (vitrification day 5–ET day 5 (D5T5)). Hormone replacement treatment was the only endometrial preparation regimen given during the embryo transfer cycle. The main outcome of the study was live birth rates. The clinical pregnancy rate and positive pregnancy test rate were determined as the secondary outcomes of the study. Results: The study included a total of 194 patients. The positive pregnancy test rates (PPR) and clinical pregnancy rates (CPR) of the D3T3, D3T5, and D5T5 groups were 14.0% and 59.2%; 43.8% and 9.3%; and 56.3% and 39.6%, respectively (p < 0.001 and p < 0.001). The live birth rates (LBR) of patients in the D3T3, D3T5, and D5T5 groups were 7.0%, 44.7%, and 27.1%, respectively (p < 0.001). In subgroup analysis of patients with a poor number of 2PN embryos (defined as having < = 4 2PN embryos), the D3T5 group had significantly higher PPR (10.7%, 60.6%, 42.4%; p < 0.001), CPR (7.1%, 57.6%, 39.4%; p < 0.001), and LBR (3.6%, 39.4%, 21.2%; p: 0.001). In this article, I examine the influence of neorealism on the ideological and artistic establishment of the Polish Film School. In the first part, I discuss theoretical assumptions about the Polish Film School, focusing on its characteristics and the reasons behind its foundation. Then, I analyse neorealism's contribution to the Polish Film School in the 1950s using examples from Polish literature. In the last part, I present an analysis of the two Polish films most strongly imbued with the spirit of neorealism: Pokolenie (A Generation) (Wajda 1954) and Godziny nadziei (The Hours of Hope) (Rybkowski 1955). Through a critical analysis of interviews and press coverage from 1953 to 1955 that takes the historical perspective of Italian neorealist films into account, I conclude that the Polish Film School was most fascinated by the Italian observation of reality and curiosity about human affairs. Complex issues and methodological approaches to assessing expected damage to the fixed assets from the permafrost degradation for the purposes of planning and implementing measures for adaptation to climate change and their consequences in the Arctic macroregion of Russia are contemplated. An integrated approach to such an assessment is introduced. It includes valuation of (a) the fixed assets located on permafrost, taking into account industry (sectoral) specificities and (b) the total expected damage to these assets depending on the intensity of fluctuations of the permafrost stability under various scenarios of climate change. The stabilizing properties of mineral–organic carbon (OC) interactions have been studied in many soil environments (temperate soils, podzol lateritic soils, and paddy soils). Recently, interest in their role in permafrost regions is increasing as permafrost was identified as a hotspot of change. In thawing ice‐rich permafrost regions, such as the Yedoma domain, 327–466 Gt of frozen OC is buried in deep sediments. Interactions between minerals and OC are important because OC is located very near the mineral matrix. Mineral surfaces and elements could mitigate recent and future greenhouse gas emissions through physical and/or physicochemical protection of OC. The dynamic changes in redox and pH conditions associated with thermokarst lake formation and drainage trigger metal‐oxide dissolution and precipitation, likely influencing OC stabilization and microbial mineralization. However, the influence of thermokarst processes on mineral–OC interactions remains poorly constrained. In this study, we aim to characterize Fe, Mn, Al, and Ca minerals and their potential protective role for OC. Total and selective extractions were used to assess the crystalline and amorphous oxides or complexed metal pools as well as the organic acids found within these pools. We analyzed four sediment cores from an ice‐rich permafrost area in Central Yakutia, which were drilled (i) in undisturbed Yedoma uplands, (ii) beneath a recent lake formed within Yedoma deposits, (iii) in a drained thermokarst lake basin, and (iv) beneath a mature thermokarst lake from the early Holocene period. We find a decrease in the amount of reactive Fe, Mn, Al, and Ca in the deposits on lake formation (promoting reduction reactions), and this was largely balanced by an increase in the amount of reactive metals in the deposits on lake drainage (promoting oxidation reactions). We demonstrate an increase in the metal to C molar ratio on thermokarst process, which may indicate an increase in metal–C bindings and could provide a higher protective role against microbial mineralization of organic matter. Finally, we find that an increase in mineral–OC interactions corresponded to a decrease in CO2 and CH4 gas emissions on thermokarst process. This article summarizes the results of systematization of monitoring heterogeneous weather records (1961–2014) and interpretation of long-term observations of fluoride ion concentration in the snow cover of an area susceptible to emissions from an aluminum smelter in 2000–2014. The monitoring was carried out by the Federal Service for Hydrometeorology and Environmental Monitoring of Russia. The trends and correlation coefficients established in this study show that F concentration in the snow cover is affected by the following concurrent factors: distance from the emission source, amount of atmospheric precipitation, air temperature and duration of thaws during the period starting from formation of a stable snow cover to the date of sampling. These results emphasize the need to consider the weather factor in the future in the annual comparison of fluoride ion concentrations in the snow cover in order to increase the reliability of data on the changes in fluorine emissions from an aluminum smelter over many years. This is an attempt to predict the potential economic impacts on public infrastructure upon degrading permafrost which is losing its bearing capacity. Climate change-related increases in costs (economic losses or damage) are estimated for several climate futures by 2050 separately for 39 municipalities located in the Russian Arctic permafrost domain. The hypothetical changes in mean annual ground temperature are inferred from air and ground temperature trends and monitoring data, with reference to forecasts of the Climate Center of the Russian Meteorological Service (Roshydromet) and climate change scenarios (representative concentration pathways RCP2.6, RCP4.5, and RCP8.5). The calculations were performed for twelve possible cases with different air ground temperature assumptions, with regard to the difference between the ground and air mean annual temperatures. This difference, or temperature shifts, due to radiation, snow, vegetation, and atmospheric precipitation effects, was estimated either by means of calculations proceeding from possible changes of climate variables or by summation of known values reported from different Arctic areas. The economic losses were evaluated as maximum and minimum values at extreme values of permafrost parameters, separately for each case. The buildings and facilities on permafrost were assumed to have pile foundations with friction piles. The permafrost thaw impact was meant as the loss of the soil capacity to bear the support structures for the infrastructure leading to deformation and failure. The impact was considered significant if the change exceeded the safety margin according to the Russian Building Code. The greatest damage is expected to housing stock and buildings and structures of main economic sectors. The monetary value of the residential infrastructure was estimated using a specially compiled inventory database including address, age, and surface area of 23.900 houses in 39 selected Russian Arctic municipalities over a total area of 44.600 km2. The estimation of fixed assets stemmed from the assumption that their monetary value is proportional to the gross output in the respective economic sector, which, in its turn, correlates with the payroll total corrected for mean industry coefficients for different regions of Russia. The potential damage may reach up to US$ 132 billion (total) and ~ US$ 15 billion for residential infrastructure alone, which generally agrees with other estimates. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study is an attempt to suggest a new state system of permafrost monitoring, primarily for energetic infrastructure, based on past approaches and achievements in Russia for over a hundred years of Arctic studies. The methodology of this study is based on general theoretical methods of scientific research. Historical (retrospective analysis of the development of the monitoring system of long-term permafrost in Russia) and logical (inductive generalization) methods were applied. The structure and methods of permafrost monitoring in the Soviet Union and new technologies used nowadays to establish permafrost monitoring systems, taking into account modern Arctic energetic development, have been analyzed. Adding nitrogen fertilizers to soils can induce short-term changes in soil N pools, and consequently cause extra release of nitrous oxide (N2O) emissions that are sourced directly from soils rather than from added N – a response termed the 'priming effect'. However, it is unknown how priming effects on nitrous oxide (N2O) emissions can be altered following a strong freeze–thaw cycle. A mesocosm (pot) experiment evaluated two soil managements: with and without history of manure applications. These soils were subjected to three moisture regimes: Low, Medium and High. Apart from the controls, which received no N, we banded 15 N-labelled urea into these soils representing a typical fall fertilization, and subsequently simulated a wide fall-freeze–thaw cycle, with temperatures from + 2, to − 18, and finally + 23 °C, respectively. The overall highest N2O production was observed 1 day after thawing. At that time, measurements of N2O site preference indicated that denitrification produced 83% of the N2O flux. Relative to the unamended controls (baseline), adding urea consistently triggered a 24% greater cumulative N2O production originated from soil N following thawing (245 vs. 305 μg N2O-N kg−1 soil, P = 0.022). This substantiates a positive priming of N2O that manifested shortly after the rapid, wet thawing of the soils. Soils having a manure history or higher moisture also exhibited an augmented production of N2O from soil N rather than from the added urea (Ps < 0.01). Although the overall N2O priming was positive, two weeks after thawing, negative priming of daily N2O fluxes also occurred, but only in soils under High moisture. Besides urea addition, the propensity for primed N2O emissions after soil thawing was enhanced under higher moisture conditions and in the soil with history of manure applications. Secale cereale L. (rye) as an overwinter forage usually harvested in the autumn, widely grows in the northeastern China, where the temperature varies widely from day to night. In this area, the crop is confronted with not only freeze–thaw stress, but also the soil salinization. In this study, the rye seedlings under alkaline salt (AS) stress were subjected to both cutting treatment (CT) after growing for 7 days and freeze–thaw (FT) stress（10/−5°C) after 6 days regrowth. The changes of soluble protein (SP), malondialdehyde (MDA), relative water content (RWC), catalase (CAT) and superoxide dismutase (SOD) activities in seedlings were studied to analyze the physiological effects of FT and AS stress with CT. The results indicated, under the combined stress, the enzyme activity and RWC decreased and the soluble protein and MDA content increased. Cutting treatment led to the accumulated of MDA, increase of enzyme activity and decrease of RWC in seedlings. The finding from the study indicates that the CT could aggravate the membrane peroxidation under the combined stress of FT and AS and enhance the osmotic adjustment ability of rye and activated the antioxidant enzyme system. In cold regions, recurrent freeze–thaw action and loading conditions are important factors affecting the long-term durability of natural rocks in engineering systems. This study explores the effects of freeze-thaw action and strain rate on the mechanical behavior of the sandstone retrieved from Urumqi areas of western China. In addition, a decay function model was built for predicting the mechanical degradation and durability of the tested rock based on the P-wave velocity results. The results suggest that the mechanical properties of samples under either static or dynamic loading decrease with the increase in freeze-thaw action. However, the enhancement influence of the strain rate on dynamic compression strength and deformation modulus under freeze-thaw action still exists and increases with the increasing strain rate. Moreover, under the same dynamic loading, increasing in freeze-thaw action can aggravate the fragmentation degree of the tested sample. The proposed decay model is in good agreement with the data measured in the tests, and the model can accurately describe the influences of freeze-thaw action and strain rate on deterioration responses of the rock. Thus, this decay model can be used to obtain better predictions of the long-term durability of tested rocks under the effect of freeze–thaw action and strain rate. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Permafrost thaw in northern ecosystems may cause large quantities of carbon (C) to move from soil to atmospheric pools. Because soil microbial communities play a critical role in regulating C fluxes from soils, we examined microbial activity and greenhouse gas production soon after permafrost thaw and ground collapse (into collapse‐scar bogs), relative to the permafrost plateau or older thaw features. Using multiple field and laboratory‐based assays at a field site in interior Alaska, we show that the youngest collapse‐scar bog had the highest CH4 production potential from soil incubations, and, based upon temporal changes in porewater concentrations and 13C‐CH4 and 13C‐CO2, had greater summer in situ rates of respiration, methanogenesis, and surface CH4 oxidation. These patterns could be explained by greater C and N availability in the young bog, while alternative terminal electron accepting processes did not play a significant role. Field diffusive CH4 fluxes from the young bog were 4.1 times greater in the shoulder season and 1.7–7.2 times greater in winter relative to older bogs, but not during summer. Greater relative CH4 flux rates in the shoulder season and winter could be due to reduced CH4 oxidation relative to summer, magnifying the importance of differences in production. Both the permafrost plateau and collapse‐scar bogs were sources of C to the atmosphere due in large part to winter C fluxes. In collapse scar bogs, winter is a critical period when differences in thermokarst age translates to differences in surface fluxes. Plain Language Summary: Permafrost thaw is occurring in Alaska which may result in a positive feedback to climate warming, due to the release of greenhouse gases such as CO2 and CH4 from soils. Here we examined greenhouse gas production along a gradient of "time since thaw," hypothesizing that fluxes and microbial activities would be highest soon after thaw, and then decline. We observed highest rates of microbial activities, particularly methanogenesis, soon after thaw, coinciding with less decomposed organic matter and higher concentrations of dissolved carbon and nitrogen in soil, possibly of permafrost origin. However, field fluxes were higher in the young thaw site, compared to the older sites, in winter and not summer, a phenomenon that is currently not well understood. The development of a post-Stalinist modern kitchen in Poland was informed by the activities of different individual and institutional actors: experts in 'professional' home engineering, architects and designers and modernist taste-makers. The image of the model kitchen is surprisingly coherent: a rational laboratory kitchen, where the housewife's work is orchestrated according to Taylorism-inspired rules that aim at reducing the burden of domestic chores and introducing modern and hygienic equipment and attitudes. The discourse, inspired by similar discussions in Europe and United States, mainly by the works of Swedish Research Institute, reflects the prewar ideas of kitchen-laboratories and 'home engineering'. What's new and different is the temporal (limited to a short post-Thaw period) enthusiasm for open-plan kitchens presented as spaces where a housewife can seamlessly perform two duties at the same time: housework and care work. This phenomenon mirrors changing attitudes towards women's roles in society which, in the post-Stalinist period, were marked by ongoing conservatism. Drawing on the concept of a 'mediation junction' and the historical production-consumption-mediation paradigm in design, the article traces changing attitudes towards women's roles in society, reflected both in popular and professional discourses on kitchen design. In this article an attempt is made to place Bakhtin's case in the context of the Soviet 1960s with their specific mental world. The study question is why this almost forgotten figure of the 1920s has become a proper man in a proper place in time of transition from Stalin's Great Fear to Khrushchov's liberalization with its continuation till 1968 and how this resurrection from the dead occured. The virtues and scientific significance of Bakhtin's works are doubtless and undeniable. But there is something else that helps to explain Bakhtin's phenomenon and its popularity. His readers mentality determines the fate of books and the spreading of ideas. The sixties witnessed the unprecedented success of Bakhtin's books. They changed the vocabulary of humanities and the mode of thinking in the generation of so-called Thaw. Bakhtin became one of the most influential figures of the sixties and greatly stimulated the emergence of the new trend known as culturology. Bakhtin's Rabelais was a special success. This text can be read on different levels and interpreted in many ways. Its content combines such genres as literary criticism, the history of culture, and philosophy. The readers of the sixties paid special attention to Bakhtin's vision of popular culture with its central image of carnival and were especially sensitive and receptive for the concept of Laughing Renaissance as a spiritual twin of Thaw which had Marxist roots, not Bakhtin's. Thanks to the complexity of the text's possible interpretation, Bakhtin was mistakenly considered as an ideologist of Thaw, and his Rabelais - as an intellectual product of this historical moment full of optimism, great expectations and hopes. Bakhtin was read by the generation of the 1960s in accordance with its mentality, its pursuit of a new form of "Socialism with human face" when left and even Marxist ideas dominated in the non-conformist discourse. But all of that had little in common with authentic Bakhtin who could share neither this philosophical worldview nor the illusions of the 1960s. The view of laughter as a kind of social therapy and as a means of emancipation in society was far from Bakhtin's. He fully realized the demonic nature of carnival and saw it as his ambivalent ally from hell hostile to every kind of ideocracy. His readers who had invented Renaissance as a prototype of their time and the first Thaw in history misunderstood the inner intentions of Bakhtin himself. But doing this quite unconsciously, they gave the first and triumphant life for the outstanding scientific and philosophical text on Rabelais written by the person of a damaged life from the past. This article examines discussions of love and marriage in a regional newspaper of the Communist Youth League (Komsomol) in the central Urals region. Although framed around the intention to communicate official communist morality and ideals about the family, these discussions included stories and readers' letters that expressed a range of views that could both draw on and challenge Party ideals. While scholarship has emphasized the conservative elements of communist morality and the lack of support for men in the domestic sphere, these sources point to an understanding of love as central to a man's life and comradely partnership as fundamental to Soviet marriage. The Arctic is warming at an unprecedented rate. We hypothesis that as seasonally frozen soils thaw and recede in extent as a response to this warming, flow path diversity and thus hydrologic connectivity increases. This enhanced hydrologic connectivity then increases the non‐linearity of the storage‐discharge relationship in a catchment. The objective of this study is to test this hypothesis by quantifying trends and spatio‐temporal differences in the degree of linearity in the storage‐discharge relationships for 16 catchments within Northern Sweden from 1950 to 2018. We demonstrate a clear increase in non‐linearity of the storage‐discharge relationship over time for all catchments with 75% showing a statistically significant increase in non‐linearity. Spring has significantly more linear storage‐discharge relationships than summer for most catchments (75%) supporting the idea that seasonally frozen soils with a low degree of hydrological connectivity have a linear storage‐discharge relationship. For the period considered, spring also showed greater change in storage‐discharge relationship trends than summer signifying that changes in recessions are primarily occurring during the thawing period. Separate storage‐discharge analyses combined with preceding winter conditions demonstrated that especially cold winters with little snow yielded springs and summers with more linear storage‐discharge relationships. We show that streamflow recession analysis reflects ongoing hydrological change of an arctic landscape as well as offering new metrics for tracking change across arctic and sub‐arctic landscapes. This article develops a multilayered analysis of the Estonian book series Loomingu Raamatukogu within the context of the Soviet Thaw. The series has been issued since 1957 and is principally devoted to translations of foreign literature. My argument takes the Thaw as a new field of uncertain possibilities and shows how a wide translation project became the catalyst for experimentation in the gray zone between the allowed and the forbidden. Investigating the entanglement of different levels of contextual analysis through the prism of Loomingu Raamatukogu lets us refine our understanding of the Thaw and of the complex possibilities and constraints that shaped the performative capacity of cultural agents in the Soviet 1960s. Drawing on Thomas Elsaesser and Malte Hagener's idea that film is capable of interacting with the spectator on the bodily, unconscious level, I explore how two Soviet films with Tat'iana Samoilova in the lead role, The Cranes Are Flying (dir. Mikhail Kalatozov, 1957) and Anna Karenina (dir. Aleksandr Zarkhi, 1967), communicate strategies for free emotional expression as well as anticipation of meaningfulness and 'enlightenment' beyond trauma and suffering. The technical means employed to educate the spectator on how to cope with trauma include Samoilova's exaggerated manner of play, the actors' body language, an experimental soundtrack and the novelistic mode of representation characterised by a discrepancy between the characters' limited perspectives and the omniscient narrator's outlook. By celebrating vulnerability as a path to true morality, understood by Emmanuel Levinas as 'stepping in for the other', both films communicate the ethical ideals of the intelligentsia during the Thaw era, which linked authenticity in emotional expression with morality and finding meaning beyond trauma. 'Enlightenment' beyond trauma, as it is imagined by the two films under discussion, includes representing vulnerability as a path to self-awareness and a support for the vulnerable as a way to reunite with one's true self. The application of deicing agents often coincides with freeze–thaw (FT); however, the physiological effects of the sodium chloride deicing agent and concentrated calcium‐magnesium acetate (CMA) deicing agent on plants in the FT environment are not well investigated. To explore the physiological response characteristics of white clover seedlings under different kinds of deicing agents and FT stress, the changes in the content of total soluble protein, soluble sugar, malondialdehyde (MDA), superoxide dismutase (SOD) and peroxidase (POD) of white clover seedlings were determined under the simulated stress of FT and deicing agent (DA). The results indicated that the soluble protein content in the white clover seedlings decreased, whereas the contents of MDA and soluble sugar, and the activities of SOD and POD increased under the FT stress. In the FT cycle, the content of soluble sugar under single FT stress, and the activities of SOD and POD of the three FT groups all showed a negative correlation with temperature. The MDA showed a significant correlation with other indicators, and the correlations among the other above physiological indexes were not significant (p < 0.05). The combined stress of FT + DA can cause increased plant damage, such as lipid peroxidation and osmotic potential imbalance. As an environmentally friendly DA, concentrated CMA was less harmful to plants than sodium chloride DA, but still brought damage to plants inevitably. This paper sets out to investigate the crucial role played by Russian "thick journals," also referred to as literary-artistic and socio-political monthlies, in Jean-Paul Sartre's Russian reception during the Thaw era. To this end, the positions (Bourdieu 1983) occupied by the four thick monthlies that published Sartre's work and/or about his work in the USSR during the Thaw are mapped. Considering the position of, and relations between, those journals sheds a different light on Sartre's reception. Nitrogen availability in the Arctic strongly influences plant productivity and distribution, and in permafrost systems with patterned ground, ecosystem carbon and nutrient cycling can vary substantially over short distances. Improved understanding of fine-scale spatial and temporal variation in soil N availability is needed to better predict tundra responses to a warming climate. We quantified plant-available inorganic nitrogen at multiple soil depths in 12 microhabitats associated with a gradient from low-center ice-wedge polygons to high-center polygons in coastal tundra at Utqiaġvik (formerly Barrow), Alaska. We measured vegetation composition, biomass, N content, and rooting depth distribution, as well as soil temperature, moisture, pH, and thaw depth to determine relationships between the spatial and temporal variability in N availability and environmental and vegetation drivers. Soil moisture varied across the microhabitats of the polygonal terrain and was the most important variable linked to distribution of both ammonium and nitrate, with ammonium predominating in wetter areas and nitrate predominating in drier areas. Total inorganic N availability increased as the soil in the active layer thawed, but the newly available N near the permafrost boundary late in the season was apparently not available to roots and did not contribute to plant N content. Nitrate in the drier sites also was not associated with plant N content, raising the possibility of N losses from this N-limited ecosystem. The strong relationship between soil moisture, inorganic N availability, and plant N content implies that understanding hydrological changes that may occur in a warming climate is key to determining nutrient cycling responses in complex polygonal tundra landscapes. The article explores the mutations of the Soviet war prose during the Thaw with a special focus on Yuri Bondarev's novel Hot Snow (1970). The psychological perspective, deheroization and gloomy atmosphere of daily reality of the trenches are specific aspects of the second wave of war prose written by former soldiers. "Lieutenants' prose", as it was known in Soviet criticism, is focused on a battle or battalion, offering glimpses into the psychological world of the simple soldier rather than a general heroic overview of the war (massshatbnost`). Bondarev's novel may be considered symptomatic for the war prose of the post-Stalinist period, as it retains features of his generation of writers. High latitude warming and permafrost thaw will expose vast stores of deep soil organic carbon (SOC) to decomposition. Thaw also changes water movement causing either wetter or drier soil. The fate of deep SOC under different thaw and moisture conditions is unclear. We measured weekly growing‐season δ13C of ecosystem respiration (Recoδ13C) across thaw and moisture conditions (Shallow‐Dry; Deep‐Dry; Deep‐Wet) in a soil warming manipulation. Deep SOC loss was inferred from known δ13C signatures of plant shoot, root, surface soil, and deep soil respiration. In addition, a 2‐year‐old vegetation removal treatment (No Veg) was used to isolate surface and deep SOC decomposition contributions to Reco. In No Veg, seasonal Recoδ13C indicated that deep SOC loss increased as the soil column thawed, while in vegetated areas, root contributions appeared to dominate Reco. The Recoδ13C differences between Shallow‐Dry and Deep‐Dry were significant but surprisingly small. This most likely suggests that, under dry conditions, soil warming stimulates root and surface SOC respiration with a negative 13C signature that opposes the more positive 13C signal from increased deep SOC respiration. In Deep‐Wet conditions, Recoδ13C suggests reduced deep SOC loss but could also reflect altered diffusion or methane (CH4) dynamics. Together, these results demonstrate that frequent Recoδ13C measurements can detect deep SOC loss and that plants confound the signal. In future studies, soil profile δ13C measurements, vegetation removal across thaw gradients, and isotopic effects of CH4 dynamics could further deconvolute deep SOC loss via surface Reco. Plain Language Summary: Carbon (C) stored in permafrost soil is like a global savings account that keeps C out of the atmosphere. Arctic warming makes permafrost soil C vulnerable to microbial decomposition, and C released to the atmosphere would accelerate global warming. In this study we used 13C isotopes, which function like molecular fingerprints, to detect permafrost soil C decomposition from a soil warming experiment that doubled the thawed soil volume and changed soil moisture conditions. We found that permafrost soil C decomposition was best detected when vegetation was removed. Deeper thaw depth had only a small effect on isotopic signatures possibly because the signal from higher permafrost soil C decomposition was overwhelmed by a simultaneous increase in surface soil decomposition and respiration from plants. In wet areas, the isotopic signal changed which could imply reduced permafrost soil C decomposition. In wet areas, methane cycling might also change the isotope signature. We conclude that seasonal 13C sampling could be useful for detecting permafrost soil C decomposition if combined with measurements that can isolate contributions from surface soil, roots, and methane cycling. Developing methods that make it easier to assess permafrost soil C decomposition is critical for estimating the balance of our global C savings account. In Estonian post-Socialist art history writing, the term ‘national’ has mostly been introduced as a defense mechanism against the Soviet regime. The aim of this article is to indicate that concept ‘national’ also played quite an important role in ‘official’ Soviet cultural politics, especially after Stalin’s death. Sludge conditioning is an important stage in sludge management. In the present study, a sequence of freeze/thaw-electro-Fenton process was designed and specific resistance filtration (SRF) was monitored during sludge conditioning as an important factor in sludge dewaterability. Furthermore, protein and polysaccharide concentrations were measured during the experiments. Results showed that the lowest SRF value contributed to -10°C in freezing process which showed a reducing trend by decreasing solution pH. In addition, results revealed that solution pH less than 3 caused a significant improvement in sludge dewatering; so the lowest SRF has been registered at pH = 2. By increasing current intensity from 0.5 to 1A, SRF values were reduced and then followed by an enhancement with increasing current intensity to 3.2 A. The lowest SRF value (6.1 × 104 m/kg) was obtained at H²O² = 30 mg/L which was the best conditions for sludge dewatering. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Labour is a central topos of Soviet imaginary, yet it is also an empty signifier, which is constantly replaced with the more seductive and eye-pleasing forms of human activities, such as singing, dancing, which ultimately function as a substitute of sexual act. This operation of replacement creates a hybrid construct of "labour libido," which, to use Freud's expression, makes work "bearable" or even, as his Ukrainian translator put it, "turns it into a pleasure". This research explores sexualization of work in Soviet imaginary and discerns two levels of its operation: the narrative and the symbolic. The narrative level presupposes sexual reward for a hard labour; on the symbolic level, the work itself becomes a substitute for sexual act. The visual regimes of representation of work and their operation on both of these levels are comparatively explored in Stalinist and post-Stalinist collective-farm musicals (Tractor-drivers, The Top Guy) and the film Shadows of Forgotten Ancestors, which combines aesthetic intentions of the avant-garde of 1920s and neorealism of 1960s. Close, shot-by-shot analysis of the novella Working days (Budni) from the film Shadows of Forgotten Ancestors reveals the cultural operation of disidentification with the official Soviet work propaganda, which was based on the implicit identification of sexual and labour libido. Thus, the film Shadows of Forgotten Ancestors is included in the genealogy of Soviet regimes of representation of work, which widens usual interpretative context of the film, considered mainly in terms of national identity. This paper proposes that the mid-1950s drive to combat extreme devotion to western fashion constituted part of the endeavor to build a broadly appealing socialist version of modernity in the "Thaw," the decade and a half following I. V. Stalin's death in 1953 and the rise of N. S. Khrushchev to power. This Thaw-era drive for a socialist modernity involved forging a society, culture, and a way of life widely perceived at home and abroad as progressive and advanced, and as ofering a viable alternative to the predominant western paradigm. The end goals of this post-Stalin endeavor to construct an appealing socialist alternative involved reaching the utopia of communism, a drive that stagnated under Stalin, while also winning the Cold War and in the process spreading the Soviet model of socialist modernity across the globe. Rapid Arctic warming is expected to increase global greenhouse gas concentrations as permafrost thaw exposes immense stores of frozen carbon (C) to microbial decomposition. Permafrost thaw also stimulates plant growth, which could offset C loss. Using data from 7 years of experimental Air and Soil warming in moist acidic tundra, we show that Soil warming had a much stronger effect on CO2 flux than Air warming. Soil warming caused rapid permafrost thaw and increased ecosystem respiration (Reco), gross primary productivity ( GPP), and net summer CO2 storage ( NEE). Over 7 years Reco, GPP, and NEE also increased in Control (i.e., ambient plots), but this change could be explained by slow thaw in Control areas. In the initial stages of thaw, Reco, GPP, and NEE increased linearly with thaw across all treatments, despite different rates of thaw. As thaw in Soil warming continued to increase linearly, ground surface subsidence created saturated microsites and suppressed Reco, GPP, and NEE. However Reco and GPP remained high in areas with large Eriophorum vaginatum biomass. In general NEE increased with thaw, but was more strongly correlated with plant biomass than thaw, indicating that higher Reco in deeply thawed areas during summer months was balanced by GPP. Summer CO2 flux across treatments fit a single quadratic relationship that captured the functional response of CO2 flux to thaw, water table depth, and plant biomass. These results demonstrate the importance of indirect thaw effects on CO2 flux: plant growth and water table dynamics. Nonsummer Reco models estimated that the area was an annual CO2 source during all years of observation. Nonsummer CO2 loss in warmer, more deeply thawed soils exceeded the increases in summer GPP, and thawed tundra was a net annual CO2 source. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

With the Soviet Pavilion of the 1962 Venice Art Biennale, the Thaw era made its entrance onto the international art scene. Artists from different generations and Soviet republics were entrusted to illustrate "the deeply human dimension of Soviet art."1 Among younger painters, one prominent figure was 30-year old artist Viktor Popkov. Along with the drawings and sketches produced during his travels in the virgin lands and building sites of Siberia, he presented the monumental painting The Builders of Bratsk (1960-61), an iconic artwork of the so-called "severe style." The exhibition took place just a few months before the Moscow Manege Exhibition of December 1962, which prompted Khrushchev's notoriously negative reaction and the first stop to Soviet cultural détente. The present article explores the genesis of the canvas as the expression of a new "severe romanticism," against the backdrop of the ongoing debate about romanticism in Soviet culture. It also analyzes the reception of Popkov's work both in Italy--the country with the largest communist party in the West--and in the international press. On the basis of archival materials and press reviews, the article sheds light onto an artistic encounter between East and West in a divided Europe and discusses missed connections and unmet expectations of Western, mostly Italian, art critics. Based on four thawing methods (still air, still water, ultrasonic wave, and microwave) and single-factor tests, we established a four-factor three-level response surface methodology for a regression model (four factors: pH, drip loss rate, cooking loss rate, protein content). The optimal combined thawing method for beef rib-eye is: microwave thawing (35 s work/10 s stop, totally 170 s) until beef surfaces soften, then air thawing at 15°C until the beef centre temperature reaches -8°C, and finally ultrasonic thawing at 220 W until the beef centre temperature rises to 0°C. With this method, the drip loss rate is 1.9003%, cooking loss rate is 33.3997%, and protein content is 229.603 µg, which are not significantly different from the model-predicted theoretical results (P = 0.05). This article positions the vogue for cybernetics as a key driver of the transformation of the institutional structures and epistemic order of Soviet technoscience that occurred in the 1950s and 1960s. Inseparable from the rapid growth of Soviet military science, Soviet cybernetics was both the result and medium of surprising recombinations of different forms of scientific and engineering expertise to create novel military technologies. Military computing was the point of entry for cybernetics, while its focal tasks—the bomb, rocketry, and radar—in turn shaped cybernetic understandings. The rapid growth and cyberneticization of these new areas of militarily driven science caused a tectonic transformation of the Stalinist articulation of science, technology, and politics. A crucial moment of these latter shifts, the article further suggests, was the transformation of Soviet economics into a properly mathematical economics. In a series of analogical transfers, mathematicians and engineers derived a radical vision of cybernetic communism from their specific military engineering tasks. Their encounter with reformist economics, mediated by computational utopias, enabled the transfer of advanced mathematical techniques, metaphors, and personnel from military science to the social sciences. This complex process constituted Soviet mathematical economics. Soviet cybernetics’ challenge to the Stalinist order of knowledge and its attendant institutional reconfigurations thus opened up a critical space for political reflection for the Cold War era ‘‘scientific-technical intelligentsia’’ at the heart of the party-state. This article follows the personal trajectory of Mikhail Lavrentiev from his early integration into the European mathematical community to his role in the construction of the Siberian science-city, Akademgorodok. Using biography as a privileged vantage point, it offers a revision of the conception of Akademgorodok as a remote utopia ultimately corrupted by political interference. It argues that, although built on a site geographically distant from the center, the project reflects Moscow’s aspirations and testifies to a close and evolving relationship between scientists and the party-state. Lavrentiev nurtured a community rooted in his personal networks and supervised the construction of an urban environment emblematic of the Khrushchev era. The success and the future of the new science-city were predicated on its visibility. Akademgorodok was a model and a showcase of post-Stalinist science, of a Soviet way of living and a universal way of knowing. Focusing on the city’s role as a showcase opens possibilities to take the investigation of late socialist science and society in new directions: from the unavoidable conflict between experts and the party state to the analysis of local, national, and transnational interactions shaping socialist knowledge-making. Ultimately, Lavrentiev’s ability to make Akademgorodok into the scene of major international encounters highlights the important role of Soviet science in the Cold War circulation of knowledge. Mineral soils in the McMurdo Dry Valleys (MDV), Antarctica, are commonly considered to be dry, and therefore to be good insulators with low thermal diffusivity values (~0.2 mm2 s-1). However, field measurements of soil moisture profiles with depth, coupled with observations of rapid ground ice melt, suggest that the thermal characteristics of MDV soils, and thus their resistance to thaw, may be spatially variable and strongly controlled by soil moisture content. The thermal conductivity, heat capacity and thermal diffusivity of 17 MDV soils were measured over a range of soil moisture conditions from dry to saturated. We found that thermal diffusivity varied by a factor of eight for these soils, despite the fact that they consist of members of only two soil groups. The thermal diffusivity of the soils increased in all cases with increasing soil moisture content, suggesting that permafrost and ground ice thaw in mineral soils may generate a positive thawing feedback in which wet soils conduct additional heat to depth, enhancing rates of permafrost thaw and thermokarst formation. The metaphor of transition has produced one of the most powerful images that captured the global historical momentum of the late twentieth century. Even though its teleological implications have been critiqued, we still live in the shadow of transition, or rather its incipient failures, as the global media represent countries that embarked on processes of transformation as relapsing and returning to primordial states. This article inquiries into the ways in which artists from two global peripheries – William Kentridge (South Africa) and Dmitry Gutov (Russia) – resist these homogenising discourses by critically engaging with failures of the transitions. A comparative reading of the artists' works from the past decade suggests that they develop a poetics which, drawing on the legacies of absurdism, treats failure as productive opportunity. Approaching the problems of transformation by remembering earlier revolutionary projects and inquiring into their politics of time, these works unravel creative possibilities within what has been deemed failed. Leachate from litter and vegetation penetrates permafrost surface soils during thaw before being exported to aquatic systems. We know this leachate is critical to ecosystem function downstream and hypothesized that thaw leachate inputs would also drive terrestrial microbial activity and nutrient uptake. However, we recognized two potential endpoint scenarios: vegetation leachate is an important source of C for microbes in thawing soil; or vegetation leachate is irrelevant next to the large background C, N, and P pools in thaw soil solution. We assessed these potential outcomes by making vegetation leachate from frozen vegetation and litter in four Arctic ecosystems that have a variety of litter quality and soil C, N, and P contents; one of these ecosystems included a disturbance recovery chronosequence that allowed us to test our second hypothesis that thaw leachate response would be enhanced in disturbed ecosystems. We added water or vegetation leachate to intact, frozen, winter soil cores and incubated the cores through thaw. We measured soil respiration throughout, and soil solution and microbial biomass C, N, and P pools and gross N mineralization immediately after a thaw incubation (−10 to 2°C) lasting 6 days. Vegetation leachate varied strongly by ecosystem in C, N, and P quantity and stoichiometry. Regardless, all vegetated ecosystems responded to leachate additions at thaw with an increase in the microbial biomass phosphate flush and an increase in soil solution carbon and nitrogen, implying a selective microbial uptake of phosphate from plant and litter leachate at thaw. This response to leachate additions was absent in recently disturbed, exposed mineral soil but otherwise did not differ between disturbed and undisturbed ecosystems. The basis of this study is Mark Wlodarczyk's paper on research methodology of art history in Polish People's Republic, especially in the 1950's. Włodarczyk put the thesis that power in that decade, standing under the banner of Stalinism, introduced elements of a thaw in the art, but at the same time they continued the policy of repression. Meltdown was an immanent part of policy. However, policy enforcement can be seen in the pragmatics of government throughout the entire period of communism. Hence the thesis of this article on the dialectics of thaw and repression as the dominant instrument of power used in art, as this area of power relations is discussed here. Among the examples, there are mainly those from the seventies, for a period of domination of conceptual art is considered a period when artists concentrated on the autonomy of art, and abandoned their social engagement in order to avoid repression. That consensus with the government, however, was apparent. Artists still challenged the tolerance of power and thus triggered a dialectic of thaw and repression, and the government showed its totalitarian face. After 1989, the power in a democratic system is distributed, therefore the dialectic of thaw and repression loses its functionality. Also, Włodarczyk described the situation in Poland after the elections of 2015. In this paper the impact resonance (IR) test method is used as a nondestructive tool to examine the curing progression, freeze/thaw (f/t) resistance, and healing potential of cement-stabilized soils. Resonant frequency (RF) measurements on specimens moist cured for up to 241 days indicate that the main portion of the hydration process is completed after about 60 days. Results of RF measurements on immature (i.e., cured for 16 days) and mature (i.e., cured for over 110 days) specimens exposed to 12 cycles of f/t indicate that the initial f/t exposure had a significant effect on the degradation of the structure. After the initial f/t cycle, some specimens exhibited continued reductions in RF values to as low as 10% of the initial measurements, while several specimens showed signs of recovery leading to minor increases in the RF values. Changes in RF values are compared with the hydraulic conductivity changes measured on the same specimens reported in a previous publication by the authors. Based on the results, a prescreening scheme is proposed that can significantly reduce the time required for f/t studies of cement-stabilized soils. Also, RF measurements after 120 days of a post-exposure healing period show a significant potential for recovery in RF values for f/t exposed specimens.
