Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) symptoms include inappropriate control of anger and severe emotional dysregulation after rejection in daily life. Nevertheless, when using the Cyberball paradigm, a tossing game to simulate social exclusion, the seven basic emotions (happiness, sadness, anger, surprise, fear, disgust, and contempt) have not been exhaustively tracked out. It was hypothesized that these patients would show anger, contempt, and disgust during the condition of exclusion versus the condition of inclusion. When facial emotions are automatically detected by Artificial Intelligence, “blending”, -or a mixture of at least two emotions- and “masking”, -or showing happiness while expressing negative emotions- may be most easily traced expecting higher percentages during exclusion rather than inclusion. Therefore, face videos of fourteen patients diagnosed with BPD (26 ± 6 years old), recorded while playing the tossing game, were analyzed by the FaceReader software. The comparison of conditions highlighted an interaction for anger: it increased during inclusion and decreased during exclusion. During exclusion, the masking of surprise; i.e., displaying happiness while feeling surprised, was significantly more expressed. Furthermore, disgust and contempt were inversely correlated with greater difficulties in emotion regulation and symptomatology, respectively. Therefore, the automatic detection of emotional expressions during both conditions could be useful in rendering diagnostic guidelines in clinical scenarios.

Los nuevos modelos de negocios sientan sus bases en la economía digital, no requieren presencia física o intermediarios, interactúan con consumidores de diversas jurisdicciones gracias al uso progresivo de tecnologías de comunicación e internet, con costos bajos y alta velocidad. Ello ha provocado confrontación de intereses fiscales de las naciones en relación con la distribución de potestades tributarias y el cumplimiento de las obligaciones de los contribuyentes. Este trabajo examina las implicaciones de la economía digital en los sistemas tributarios en torno al Proyecto BEPS, por sus siglas en inglés: Base Erosion and Profit Sharing, promovido por el Grupo de los Veinte (G-20) y la Organización para la Cooperación y el Desarrollo Económicos (OCDE). A través de una revisión documental con un análisis descriptivo, se aborda la erosión de la base imponible y el traslado de beneficios, así como los principales desafíos que enfrentan las administraciones tributarias en el contexto internacional. La evidencia muestra una imperante necesidad de mejorar, de forma continua, la asignación de potestades tributarias donde Latinoamérica, así como otras naciones en desarrollo, podrían verse favorecidas al gravar rentas que provienen del comercio electrónico.

El objetivo de esta investigación es analizar si las habilidades directivas de los gerentes de las micro y pequeñas empresas (mypes) en el municipio Tonalá, Jalisco, México tienen un impacto en la creación de la ventaja competitiva. Para lo anterior se aplicó una encuesta a los directores de mypes de Tonalá, donde se obtuvieron 411 cuestionarios válidos. La investigación tiene un diseño transversal, con enfoque cuantitativo, es de tipo exploratorio, descriptivo y correlacional. Se utiliza la técnica de Análisis Factorial Exploratorio y la regresión lineal múltiple a través de la especificación de dos modelos. La evidencia empírica confirma que las habilidades directivas de manejo de conflictos, comunicación, motivación y liderazgo impactan positiva y significativamente en la creación de ventaja competitiva.

Cheating forms part of a complex emotional and cognitive process. However, although a relatively mundane phenomenon, instruments to evaluate cheating and its effects socially are scarce. This paper presents a five-stage approach aimed at providing validity to an instrument designed to assess cheating — specifically, its detection, and emotional reactions towards it once detected. An instrument was designed after (1) reviewing the relevant literature on cheating, in order to (2) design a bank of stimuli, (3) formulate a Delphi panel to judge the most coherent and pertinent ones, and (4) perform three pilot studies to adjust the final version of the instrument. Results from Stages 1 to 4 show that content validity was achieved for the Instrument for Detecting Cheating and its Emotional Reactions (INDETRAE, in Spanish: Instrumento para la Detección de Trampa y sus Reacciones Emocionales). Stimuli were grouped into five categories of 18 different scenarios, for a total of 90 vignettes: meaning, the INDETRAE is a 5-category, vignette-based questionnaire consisting of contrasting social cost-benefit scenarios, where the cheating situation affects an undefined, a first or a third person, and also a neutral category with no cheating. In Stage 5, several chi-squared tests (p < 0.0005) revealed significant differences between categories, proving that the instrument can indeed be used to detect cheating and to identify differentiated emotional reactions – for example, anger when there was detriment to a third person as opposed to neutral situations, or glad when there was a case of cheating which benefited the first person. The last stage counts as the first approximation to support construct validity of the INDETRAE. The most important contribution of this work consists in developing an instrument to detect cheating, confirmed by the resulting emotional reactions, which therefore demonstrate its validity.

Background: High dose methotrexate (HDMTX) is used for the treatment of pediatric hemato-oncological diseases. HDMTX can induce acute kidney injury in cases of delayed elimination. The use of leucovorin remains the most effective rescue action. Further treatment options are of difficult access in the rare cases where leucovorin fails to prevent renal failure from occurring. Glucarpidase is an effective treatment in cases of methotrexate (MTX) delayed elimination, but cost is high and availability is limited. Charcoal hemoperfusion (CHP) is a very efficient procedure to remove protein-bound drugs, promoting fast MTX elimination, but is rarely considered as a treatment option.Methods: We present three pediatric cases with prolonged exposure to MTX after HDMTX and delayed elimination in which hemoperfusion was performed as rescue treatment for methotrexate intoxication.Results: Charcoal hemoperfusion was performed with positive results and no complications as bridging until glucarpidase was available in two cases and in one case where two doses of glucarpidase led to insufficient reduction of MTX levels.Conclusions: CHP can be considered as a rescue treatment option in MTX intoxication, since it is an effective and safe extracorporeal method for removing MTX, in cases where rescue with leucovorin is insufficient and glucarpidase is not available or while waiting for delivery.

The current sanitary crisis due to COVID-19 has further evidenced the enormous digital exclusion of older adults. Furthermore, the crisis has urged older adults to adopt new technologies to facilitate their tasks, as well as to provide them with an effective means against loneliness and social isolation caused by the confinement. In light of this, Digital Literacy is necessary for all those excluded from the digital era, who are characterized mainly by little or no ability to effectively use technologies. Nevertheless, detailed studies showing the leap from mixed (Blended Learning, BL) to digital literacy in the elderly have not been published. The objective of the present research was to analyze the level of Digital Literacy with the Digital Literacy Evaluation (DILE) of two groups of elderly adults with different levels of literacy (Group 1: G1, and Group 2: G2) during three stages: BL (Aug–Dec 2019); Transition (Feb–Jun 2020); and Digital (Aug–Dec 2020). Comparisons were made before each educational level (pre-pre-pre) and after each educational level (post-post-post) and during consecutive periods before and after each semester (pre vs post) and throughout different educational levels (G1: Basic 1, B1; Basic 2, B2; and intermediate 1, I1; and G2: Intermediate 1 to 3, I1, I2, and I3). Subsequently, considering all the elderly who had passed at least one of the literacy levels, we worked with a total sample of 176 older adults. The comparisons showed that, before the pandemic, G1’s pre digital literacy levels increased between B1 and B2 and that the differences continued with that increasing trend between the B1 level and the I1 completely digital treatment, and the same was observed for post measurements. On the other hand, for the G2, the differences in the DILE were statistically significant between the pre-condition of I2 (before the pandemic) and the I3 (completely digital treatment); and between the pre-conditions of I1 and I3; the same results were obtained for post treatments. Also, pre vs post scores on the DILE were statistically significant and older adults increased progressively their digital literacy despite the COVID-19 pandemic and jumped to the digital age.

Abstract Background Arthrogryposis-Renal dysfunction-Cholestasis syndrome (ARC, MIM#208085) is a rare multisystem disease due to mutations in the VPS33B and VIPAR genes, both involved in maintaining apical-basolateral cell polarity. The correlation between mutations and phenotype in the ARC Syndrome is not well described. We report on a 6 year old patient who presented with severe renal Fanconi as first manifestation of ARC related to a combined de novo mutation in the VPS33B gene. Case presentation A 6 year old girl presented during the first year of life with severe renal Fanconi as the first manifestation of ARC-Syndrome. This case presents all defining features of ARC syndrome (including liver, skin and articular manifestations) with predominantly renal impairment at presentation. This novel mutation may be associated with a pronounced renal phenotype in ARC. Furthermore, we report on the successful use of LDL-Apheresis and biliodigestive derivation for treatment of cholestatic pruritus with encouraging results. Conclusion ARC is a heterogeneous disorder with early mortality. This case report contributes to a better understanding of this rare disorder, describes a novel mutation in the VPS33B gene and presents an innovative rescue treatment approach.

In Older Adults (OAs), Electroencephalogram (EEG) slowing in frontal lobes and a diminished muscle atonia during Rapid Eye Movement sleep (REM) have each been effective tracers of Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI), but this relationship remains to be explored by non-linear analysis. Likewise, data provided by EEG, EMG (Electromyogram) and EOG (Electrooculogram)—the three required sleep indicators—during the transition from REM to Non-REM (NREM) sleep have not been related jointly to MCI. Therefore, the main aim of the study was to explore, with results for Detrended Fluctuation Analysis (DFA) and multichannel DFA (mDFA), the Color of Noise (CN) at the NREM to REM transition in OAs with MCI vs. subjects with good performances. The comparisons for the transition from NREM to REM were made for each group at each cerebral area, taking bilateral derivations to evaluate interhemispheric coupling and anteroposterior and posterior networks. In addition, stationarity analysis was carried out to explore if the three markers distinguished between the groups. Neuropsi and the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) were administered, as well as other geriatric tests. One night polysomnography was applied to 6 OAs with MCI (68.1 ± 3) and to 7 subjects without it (CTRL) (64.5 ± 9), and pre-REM and REM epochs were analyzed for each subject. Lower scores for attention, memory and executive funcions and a greater index of arousals during sleep were found for the MCI group. Results confirmed that EOGs constituted significant markers of MCI, increasing the CN for the MCI group in REM sleep. The CN of the EEG from the pre-REM to REM was higher for the MCI group vs. the opposite for the CTRL group at frontotemporal areas. Frontopolar interhemispheric scaling values also followed this trend as well as right anteroposterior networks. EMG Hurst values for both groups were lower than those for EEG and EOG. Stationarity analyses showed differences between stages in frontal areas and right and left EOGs for both groups. These results may demonstrate the breakdown of fractality of areas especially involved in executive functioning and the way weak stationarity analyses may help to distinguish between sleep stages in OAs.

Background/Objectives: This study investigated the association between the rs13306703 and rs8192288 variants of the superoxide dismutase 3 (SOD3) gene and breast cancer (BC) in the Mexican population, conducting both genetic and in silico analyses. Methods: 357 healthy women and 386 BC patients were studied using TaqMan assays, qPCR, and RFLP-PCR. Results: The TT genotype and a recessive pattern of these variants were risk factors for BC (p < 0.05). Specifically, the TT genotype of rs13306703 was associated with metastatic lymph nodes, tumor progression (III–IV), luminal A, nonresponse to chemotherapy, and ki-67 ≥ 20% with diabetes mellitus (DM). Meanwhile, the GT genotype of rs8192288 was associated with menopause, luminal A, tumor progression (III–IV), ki-67 ≥ 20%, and a positive estrogen receptor with nonresponse to chemotherapy. Additionally, the TT genotype combined with DM was identified as a BC risk factor (p < 0.05). The TT haplotype was also found to be a risk factor for BC. In silico analysis suggested that these variants might influence SOD3 regulation by affecting transcription factors and active enhancer sites. Conclusions: The rs13306703 and rs8192288 variants of the SOD3 gene were associated with an increased risk of BC and may alter SOD3 regulation through effects on transcription factors, active enhancers, and transcription start sites, with modified motifs in breast epithelium cells.

El propósito de este trabajo es presentar una revisión histórica que revela cómo la sal fue un producto comercial relevante entre los años 1882 - 1908 en el territorio del estado Mérida. Dicho mineral, como refiere la historia, fue producto de intercambio entre indígenas del occidente venezolano y luego de la consolidación de los Estados Unidos de Venezuela, su manejo implicó medidas estrictas de vigilancia, obteniendo valor agregado cuando pasó a ser un insumo de consumo básico. Por tanto, se presenta, mediante la evidencia encontrada en el Archivo General del Estado, un acercamiento histórico al comercio lícito e ilícito de la sal y cómo esto requirió de la creación de leyes, decretos y controles como las celadurías para regular la actividad en la Provincia. Para esbozar esta breve reseña, se apeló a una revisión documental, con el uso de fuentes primarias y secundarias; concluyendo que la recaudación de impuestos por sal se sustentaba en la necesidad de mantener a las tropas que resguardaban el territorio nacional y sobre todo las zonas de frontera y Los Andes que, por ser colindantes con el sur del lago de Maracaibo, requería y aún requiere controles especiales. La sal a pesar de no ser un producto fundamental para la economía nacional, fue y sigue siendo un recurso necesario para el consumo humano y animal.

Abstract Background Colorectal cancer (CRC) ranks third in cancer incidence globally and is the second leading cause of cancer-related mortality. The nucleoside diphosphate kinase 1 (NME1) and netrin 1 receptor (DCC) genes have been associated with resistance against tumorigenesis and tumor metastasis. This study investigates the potential association between NME1 (rs34214448 G > T and rs2302254 C > T) and DCC (rs2229080 G > C and rs714 A > G) variants and susceptibility to colorectal cancer development. Methods Samples from 232 colorectal cancer patients and 232 healthy blood donors underwent analysis. Variants were identified using polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism (PCR–RFLP) methodology. Associations were assessed using odds ratios (OR), and the p values were adjusted with Bonferroni test. Results Individuals carrying the G/T and T/T genotypes for the NME1 rs34214448 variant exhibited a higher susceptibility for develop colorectal cancer (OR = 2.68, 95% CI: 1.76–4.09, P = 0.001 and OR = 2.47, 95% CI: 1.37–4.47, P = 0.001, respectively). These genotypes showed significant associations in patients over 50 years (OR = 2.87, 95% CI: 1.81–4.54, P = 0.001 and OR = 2.99, 95% CI: 1.54–5.79, P = 0.001 respectively) and with early Tumor-Nodule-Metastasis (TNM) stage (P = 0.001), and tumor location in the rectum (P = 0.001). Furthermore, the DCC rs2229080 variant revealed that carriers of the G/C genotype had an increased risk for develop colorectal cancer (OR = 2.00, 95% CI: 1.28–3.11, P = 0.002) and were associated with age over 50 years, sex, and advanced TNM stages (P = 0.001). Conclusions These findings suggest that the NME1 rs34214448 and DCC rs2229080 variants play a significant role in colorectal cancer development.

Colorectal cancer (CRC) is a major global health challenge and one of the top 10 cancers in Mexico. Lifestyle and genetic factors influence CRC development, prognosis, and therapeutic response; identifying risk factors, such as the genes involved, is critical to understanding its behavior, mechanisms, and prognosis. The association between KRAS gene variants (rs8720 and rs12587) and CRC in the Mexican population was analyzed. We performed in silico analysis and analyzed 310 healthy individuals and 385 CRC patients using TaqMan assays and real-time PCR. The CC and GG genotypes of rs8720 and rs12587 were identified as CRC risk factors (p < 0.05). The CC and TC genotypes of the rs8720 were associated with rectal cancer, age over 50 years, moderately differentiated histology, and advanced cancer stage. TG and GG genotypes of the rs12587 variant were a risk factor in the CRC group, in patients with stage I–II, males, and stage III–IV non-chemotherapy response. The TG haplotype is protected against CRC. The combined CCGG genotype was linked to CRC risk. In silico analysis revealed that the rs12587 and rs8720 variants could influence KRAS gene regulation via miRNAs. In conclusion, rs8720 and rs12587 variants of the KRAS gene were associated with CRC risk and could influence KRAS regulation via miRNAs.

Objective(s): The mitogen-activated protein kinase kinase 4 (MKK4) plays a key role in several processes like inflammation, apoptosis, and tumorigenesis. Several authors have proposed that genetic variations in these genes may alter their expression with subsequent cancer risk. This study aimed to examine the possible association of MKK4 rs3826392 and rs3809728 variants in Mexican patients with colorectal cancer (CRC). These variants were also compared with clinical features as sex, age, TNM stage, and tumor location.Materials and Methods: The study included genomic DNA from 218 control subjects and 250 patients. Genotyping of the MKK4 variants was performed using polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism (PCR-RFLP) procedure. Results: Individuals with A/T and T/T genotypes for the rs3809728 (-1044 A>T) variant showed a significantly increased risk for CRC (P=0.012 and 0.007, respectively); while individuals with the G/G genotype for the rs3826392 (-1304 T>G) variant showed a decreased risk for CRC (P=0.012). Genotypes of the MKK4 rs3809728 variant were also significantly related to colon localization and advanced TNM stage in CRC patients. T-T haplotype (rs3826392 and rs3809728) of the MKK4 gene was associated with risk in patients with CRC.Conclusion: The rs3826392 variant in the MKK4 gene could be a cancer protective factor, while the rs3809728 variant could be a risk factor. These variants play a significant role in CRC risk.

Background Variants of the estrogen receptor b (ESR2) gene have been associated with different types of cancer. However, these associations have been inconsistent. We genotyped the ESR2 variants (rs1256049, rs4986938, and rs1256030) in breast cancer (BC) patients and in healthy women. Results The variants rs1256049 and rs4986938 in the ESR2 gene were not associated with risk susceptibility in BC patients. However, the rs1256030 variant had an association as a risk factor for BC patients when compared with controls and BC patients for the TT genotype (odds ratio (OR) 1.86, 95% confidence intervals (CI) [1.05–3.28], p = 0.042). In addition, differences were observed in patients and controls carrying the TT genotype under 50 years of age (OR 1.85, 95% CI [1.05–3.27], p = 0.043). Thus, evident differences showed the rs1256030 variant in patients with TT, TC, and TC+TT genotypes with: (1) Stage IV (OR 1.60, 95% CI [1.06–2.54], p = 0.033), and (2) Luminal A (OR 1.60, 95% CI [0.47–0.21], p = 0.041), as well as in BC carriers of the TT genotype with indices of cellular proliferative (Ki-67) elevated (>20%) and overweight (OR 1.67, 95% CI [0.85–3.28], p = 0.041), respectively. In BC HER2 with lymph node metastasis, the TT genotype was a protective factor (OR 0.38, 95% CI [0.18–0.78], p = 0.005). The identification of haplotypes included two common GAT as risk factors (OR 3.1, 95% CI [1.31–7.72], p = 0.011) and GGC as a protective factor (OR 0.7, 95% CI [0.60–0.97], p = 0.034). The haplogenotype GGGATC was a risk factor (OR 2.5, 95% CI [1.28–5.0], p = 0.008). Conclusion The variant rs1256030 (TT) of the ESR2 gene and haplotype GAT were associated with susceptibility to BC as risk factors in this sample from the Mexican population.

Objective(s): The rs712 polymorphism in a let-7 microRNA-binding site at KRAS gene has been associated with cancer. To examine its association with rs712 polymorphism, we analyzed Mexican individuals with colorectal cancer (CRC) and healthy subjects. Materials and Methods: Genotyping of the rs712 polymorphism was performed by polymerase chain reaction in 281 controls and 336 CRC patients. Results: The observed frequencies of rs712 polymorphism indicated an associated protective factor for CRC (P=0.032). An association between genotype and the disease was evident in: colon localization (allele T, odds ratio (OR) 3.82, 95% confidence Intervals (CI) 2.77-5.28, P=0.0001), node metastasis (genotype TT, OR 2.49, 95% CI 1.45-4.28, P=0.0009), poor differentiation (genotype GT, OR 2.35, 95% CI 1.35-4.1, P=0.0033), and poor chemotherapy response (genotype GT, OR 2.6, 95% CI 1.7-4.24, P=0.0001). Conclusion: Comparison of the data from patients with control group showed that polymorphism of rs712 in KRAS gene was protective factor, which was associated with susceptibility for CRC. However, the genotypes TT and GT of rs712 polymorphism in KRAS could contribute significantly to colon localization, node metastasis, poor differentiation and poor chemotherapy response in CRC patients in this sample population.
