Resilience is considered to be a component of sustainability and is addressed in the 17 Sustainable Development Goals adopted by all United Nations Member States. Resilience in this context is mainly oriented to climate change adaptation and disaster risk reduction. However, a holistic approach, considering urban systems as a whole and resilience to all kind of disturbances, is needed for a better understanding of the complexity of urban resilience. To advance in this direction we have proposed an Urban Resilience Index and applied it to 81 cities in the Madrid Region, Spain. The index comprises 42 indicators that measure six resilience characteristics: diversity, self-sufficiency and autonomy, polycentric governance, social cohesion, learning and innovation, and social-ecological justice, in five urban dimensions: socio-cultural, economic, ecological, physical and technological, and governance system. Our results showed that the ecological dimension in the Madrid Region is largely determined by the geomorphological characteristics and the associated ecosystems, but municipalities compensate it with resilience strategies focused on social and physical aspects. The most resilient municipalities are also in general the most sustainable, but not always. We propose to use the Urban Resilience Index in combination with the Sustainable Development Goals Index to develop resilient strategies towards sustainability.

Resumen: Introducción: las características clínicas y el tratamiento recibido por los pacientes hospitalizados por COVID-19 han ido modificándose con el tiempo. El objetivo fue analizar la evolución clínico-terapéutica de los pacientes en las ondas epidémicas y estimar un modelo predictivo de la mortalidad. Métodos: estudio observacional de cohortes retrospectivo considerando los pacientes ingresados con infección confirmada por SARS-CoV-2 hasta marzo de 2022. Se recogieron variables sociodemográficas, comorbilidades y tratamientos, y se creó un modelo predictivo de fallecimiento mediante regresión logística multivariante. Resultados: se incluyeron 1.784 pacientes. Se encontraron diferencias entre las ondas epidémicas con respecto a la edad, sexo, hipertensión arterial, diabetes mellitus, obesidad y enfermedad renal crónica. Ceftriaxona, azitromicina, hidroxicloroquina, metilprednisolona y lopinavir-ritonavir fueron los fármacos más frecuentemente utilizados en la primera onda. There are two main areas in which the Internet of Ships (IoS) can help: firstly, the production stage, in all its phases, from material bids to manufacture, and secondly, the operation of the ship. Intelligent ship management requires a lot of information, as does the shipbuilding process. In these two phases of the ship’s life cycle, IoS acts as a key to the keyhole. IoS tools include sensors, process information and real-time decision-making, fog computing, or delegated processes in the cloud. The key point to address this challenge is the design phase. Getting the design process right will help in both areas, reducing costs and making agile use of technology to achieve a highly efficient and optimal outcome. But this raises a lot of new questions that need to be addressed: At what stage should we start adding control sensors? Which sensors are best suited to our solution? Is there anything that offers more than simple identification? As we begin the process of answering all these questions, we realize that a Computer Aided Design (CAD) tool, as well as Artificial Intelligence (AI), mixed in a single tool, could significantly help in all these processes. AI combined with specialized CAD tools can enhance the sensitization phases in the shipbuilding process to improve results throughout the ship’s life cycle. This is the base of the framework developed in this paper.

Spinal anesthesia (SA) is gaining recognition as a safe and efficacious regional alternative to general anesthesia for elective lumbar surgery. However, unfamiliarity with management issues related to its use has limited the adoption of awake spine surgery, despite its benefits. Few centers in the United States routinely offer SA for elective lumbar surgery, and a comprehensive workflow to standardize SA for lumbar surgery is lacking. In this article, we examine recent literature on the use of SA in lumbar surgery, review the experience of our institution with SA in lumbar surgery, and provide a cohesive outline to streamline the implementation of SA from the perspective of the anesthesiologist. We review the critical features of SA in contemporary lumbar surgery, including selection of patients, methods of SA, intraoperative sedation, and management of several important technical considerations. We aimed to flatten the learning curve to improve the availability and accessibility of the technique for eligible patients.

Abstract Mechanical forces control the function of organisms and mediate the interaction between biological systems and their environments. Knowledge of these forces will increase the understanding of biological processes and can support the development of novel diagnostic and therapeutic procedures. Although techniques like atomic force microscopy and droplet insertion method allow measuring forces over a broad range of values, they are invasive and lack versatility. A promising way to overcome these hurdles is luminescent nanomanometry. Quantum dots (QDs) specifically have optical properties that depend on their size because of the quantum confinement, which makes them responsive to applied forces. Yet, a fine understanding of how fundamental parameters affect the response to applied stress is required before a QD family can be credibly proposed as luminescent nanomanometers. Here, a thorough study is conducted on how size and stoichiometry affect the nanomanometry performance of CuInS2 QDs. The studied QDs feature pressure‐dependent photoluminescence in the red/near‐infrared range, which can enable the measurement of mechanical forces in the range of physiological relevance in a remote and minimally invasive way. It is shown that tuning size and stoichiometry can simultaneously enhance the CuInS2 QDs’ brightness and response to applied pressure, thus providing guidelines for better luminescent nanomanometers.

Conversational Agents (CA) are increasingly being deployed by organizations to provide round-the-clock support and to increase customer satisfaction. All CA have one thing in common despite the differences in their design: they need to be trained with users’ intents and corresponding training sentences. Access to proper data with acceptable coverage of intents and training sentences is a big challenge in CA deployment. Even with the access to the past conversations, the process of discovering intents and training sentences manually is not time and cost-effective. Here, an end to end automated framework that can discover intents and their training sentences in conversation logs to generate labeled data sets for training intent models is presented. The framework proposes different feature engineering techniques and leverages dimensionality reduction methods to assemble the features, then applies a density-based clustering algorithm iteratively to mine even the least common intents. Finally, the clustering results are automatically labeled by the final algorithm.

Conservation and restoration of hedgerows promote biodiversity and multi-functionality in agricultural landscapes. However, in Mediterranean environments, natural regeneration of hedgerows is often poor, and factors hindering the establishment and growth of hedgerow woody species remain unclear. This study aimed to address this gap by (1) quantifying natural regeneration, including seedling establishment and resprouting of planted hedgerow species and the establishment of woody species coming from outside the hedgerows; and (2) experimentally assessing the impact of drought, herbivory, and herb competition on seedling establishment. We selected 12 planted, 11–13-year-old hedgerows in four sites in Central Spain to sample their natural regeneration. In addition, we transplanted 1,356 seedlings of Colutea arborescens L., Crataegus monogyna Jacq. and Rhamnus alaternus L. to two field sites under three treatments that were applied factorially for two years: irrigation to alleviate summer drought, protection against herbivory, and herb clipping to reduce competition with transplanted seedlings. We found that only 66 juveniles of woody species, including 29 of species that were not planted in the hedgerows, developed from seed germination, and 316 sprouts recruited spontaneously along 10 years (14 individuals ha−1 year−1). Of the transplanted seedlings, only 22% survived after two years with protection against herbivory strongly enhancing seedling survival. To a lesser extent, irrigation and herb competition affected survival through interactions with herbivory and species identity. Irrigation and protection against herbivores accelerated seedling growth. Survival and growth of C. arborescens (14%; seedling height = 12 ± 9 cm) were lower than those of C. monogyna (41%; 21 ± 11 cm) and R. alaternus (17%; 13 ± 8 cm). We conclude that natural regeneration in Mediterranean planted hedgerows is low, herbivory is the main limiting factor for seedling survival, especially for deciduous species, and summer drought and herb competition mostly limit growth. These findings have important implications for the conservation and restoration of hedgerows in Mediterranean environments.

Introduction: One main limitation in biomarker studies using EVs is the lack of a suitable isolation method rendering high yield and purity samples in a quick and easily standardized procedure. Here we report an affinity isolation method with a membrane-sensing peptide (MSP) derived from bradykinin.Methods: We designed a protocol based on agarose beads carrying cation chelates to specifically bind to the 6His-tagged membrane-sensing peptide. This approach presents several advantages: 1) cation-carrying agaroses are widely used and standardized for His-tagged protein isolation, 2) the affinity protocol can be performed in small volumes, feasible and manageable for clinical routine and 3) elution with imidazole or EDTA allows a gentle and easy recovery without EV damage, facilitating subsequent characterization and functional analyses.Results: The optimized final procedure incubates 0.5 mg of peptide for 10 min with 10 µL of Long-arm Cobalt agarose before an overnight incubation with concentrated cell conditioned medium. EV downstream analyses can be directly performed on the agarose beads adding lysis or nucleic-acid extraction buffers, or gently eluted with imidazole or EDTA, rendering a fully competent EV preparation.Discussion: This new isolation methodology is based on the recognition of general membrane characteristics independent of surface markers. It is thus unbiased and can be used in any species EV sample, even in samples from animal or plant species against which no suitable antibodies exist. Being an affinity method, the sample handling protocol is very simple, less time-consuming, does not require specialized equipment and can be easily introduced in a clinical automated routine. We demonstrated the high purity and yield of the method in comparison with other commercially available kits. This method can also be scale up or down, with the possibility of analyzing very low amounts of sample, and it is compatible with any downstream analyses thanks to the gentle elution procedure.

Abstract Interest in the use of extracellular vesicles (EVs) as biomarkers of disease is rapidly growing. However, one main unsolved issue in the EV field is finding a technique able to eliminate non‐EV contaminants present in biofluid samples in a one‐step isolation protocol. Due to the expansion and value of size exclusion chromatography (SEC) as one of the best EV isolation methods, we have tested several agarose resins with different agarose percentages, bead sizes and crosslinking features to optimize EV isolation. For this optimization of SEC, we first employed conditioned media from a melanoma cell culture, a simpler sample in comparison to biological fluids, but which also contains abundant contaminants such as soluble protein and lipoproteins (LPPs). The distinct agaroses and the combinations of resins with different agarose percentages in the same column were tested. Soluble protein, EVs and LPPs levels from the different eluted fractions were quantitated by immunodetection or absorbance measurements. Samples were also analysed by NTA and TEM to verify the yield and the LPP contamination. Different percentages of agarose resins (2%, 4% and 6%) yielded samples with increasing LPP contamination respectively, which was not improved in the columns that combined them. Crosslinking of the agarose did not affect EV isolation yield nor the LPP contamination. In contrast, reducing the bead size greatly improved EV purity. We thus selected 4% Rapid Run Fine agarose beads as the resin that more efficiently isolated EVs with almost no contamination of other particles. Using blood plasma samples, this resin also demonstrated an improved capacity in the isolation of EVs from LPPs in comparison to the agaroses most commonly used in the field and differential ultracentrifugation.

Minimally invasive monitoring of brain activity is essential not only to gain understanding on the working principles of the brain, but also for the development of new diagnostic tools. In this perspective we describe how brain thermometry could be an alternative to conventional methods (e.g., magnetic resonance or nuclear medicine) for the acquisition of thermal images of the brain with enough spatial and temperature resolution to track brain activity in minimally perturbed animals. We focus on the latest advances in transcranial luminescence thermometry introducing a critical discussion on its advantages and shortcomings. We also anticipate the main challenges that the application of luminescent nanoparticles for brain thermometry will face in next years. With this work we aim to promote the development of near infrared luminescence for brain activity monitoring, which could also benefit other research areas dealing with the brain and its illnesses.

Intent classification (IC) and Named Entity Recognition (NER) are arguably the two main components needed to build a Natural Language Understanding (NLU) engine, which is a main component of conversational agents. The IC and NER components are closely intertwined and the entities are often connected to the underlying intent. Current research has primarily focused to model IC and NER as two separate units, which results in error propagation, and thus, sub-optimal performance. In this paper, we propose a simple yet effective novel framework for NLU where the parameters of the IC and the NER models are jointly trained in a consolidated parameter space. Text semantic representations are obtained from popular pre-trained contextual language models, which are fine-tuned for our task, and these parameters are propagated to other deep neural layers in our framework leading to a faithful unified modelling of the IC and NER parameters. The overall framework results in a faithful parameter sharing when the training is underway, leading to a more coherent learning. Experiments on two public datasets, ATIS and SNIPS, show that our model outperforms other methods by a noticeable margin. On the SNIPS dataset, we obtain a 1.42% improvement in NER in terms of the F1 score, and 1% improvement in intent accuracy score. On ATIS, we achieve 1.54% improvement in intent accuracy score. We also present qualitative results to showcase the effectiveness of our model.

Ideally, any material used should be nontoxic and produced with safe, inexpensive, and energy‐effective processes. In the case of optically active nanoparticles, this is often not the case, as they are frequently composed of hazardous heavy metals and/or produced with methods far from being environmentally friendly. Herein, the preparation of Ag2S‐based nanoparticles via a simple green synthesis route is explored. Aqueous extracts of roasted coffee are used as sources of coordinating molecules. Optimization of the reaction conditions yields dimeric Ag−Ag2S nanoparticles, whose near‐infrared photoluminescence can be switched on via H2O2‐mediated oxidation. This oxidation transforms suitable photoacoustic contrast agents into fluorescence imaging probes. Theoretical calculations further clarify the role of metallic silver in determining the optical properties of Ag2S. Overall, it is demonstrated that nanomaterials with tangible applicative potential can be prepared via cost‐ and energy‐effective synthesis strategies that entail benign, renewable chemicals.

Hedgerows are linear landscape features of woody vegetation usually located around agricultural fields. An increasing number of studies have addressed the effects of hedgerows on biodiversity and ecosystem services. This study is aimed to synthesize these effects and compare the levels of biodiversity and ecosystem services in farmland with hedgerows and (1) farmland without hedgerows and (2) nearby natural habitat at the global scale. We hypothesized that farmland with hedgerows (1) enhances biodiversity and ecosystem services as compared to farmland without hedgerows but (2) supports lower levels of biodiversity and ecosystem services than natural habitat. Our systematic literature review retained 835 observations from 170 primary studies, which were analyzed following the standard methodology in meta-analyses. Our results partially support both hypotheses. Farmland with hedgerows exhibited higher levels of biodiversity and provisioning services than farmland without hedgerows (H1). Farmland with hedgerows provided similar levels of biodiversity (edge effects) but lower levels of ecosystem services than natural habitat (H2). The effects of hedgerows on biodiversity and ecosystem services depended on control ecosystem type (grassland/meadow or forest/woodland) but were largely independent of climate type (temperate or tropical) and the focus of spatial scale (field or landscape). In conclusion, conservation and restoration of hedgerows contribute to people in several ways by enhancing biodiversity and multifunctionality in agricultural landscapes.

The establishment of planted trees and the natural regeneration of trees in agroecosystems is challenging. This study evaluated the establishment and natural regeneration of the following six native tree species in two agricultural systems in the Atlantic Forest in Paraguay: Cedrela fissilis Vell., Cordia trichotoma (Vell) Arráb. ex Steud., Handroanthus albus (Cham.) Mattos, Handroanthus impetiginosus (Mart. ex DC.) Mattos, Peltophorum dubium (Sprengel) Taubert, and Cordia americana (L.) Gottschling and J.S.Mill. At the study site in Caaguazú, 18 plots of 100 m2 each were established in 2 agronomic systems (conventional or agroecological) featuring 3 plantation types (pathsides, agricultural field edges, and islets). Trees were planted at this site in spring 2010 at a density of 1800 individuals ha−1, and the site was monitored for six years. At the study site in Itapúa, 30 plots of 50 m2 each were established in three agronomic systems (conventional, traditional, or agroecological). Trees were planted at this site in spring 2012 at a density of 1600 individuals ha−1, and the site was monitored for four years. Survival and relative growth rates of the planted species and natural regeneration were analyzed using generalized linear mixed models that considered species, agronomic system, and plantation type as fixed factors, and time and plot as random factors. At both sites, survival varied among species. Here, C. fissilis showed lower survival and C. trichotoma higher growth than the other species. Naturally regenerated species were C. trichotoma, H. albus, and P. dubium. The agronomic system and species affected growth and natural regeneration at both locations. Plantation type affected survival and growth in Caaguazú only. We conclude that species contributes more than agronomic system or plantation type to determining the survival, relative growth rate, and natural regeneration in agroforestry systems in the Paraguayan Atlantic Forest.

Forest and landscape restoration (FLR) could benefit from the land sharing/sparing approaches to support decisions. We discuss four questions potentially shaping FLR outcomes in agricultural landscapes in the context of land sharing/sparing decisions: (1) Which are the main focuses of restorative interventions?; (2) Which kind of restored forests should these interventions target?; (3) Which restorative interventions should be implemented and where?; and (4) What are the major factors influencing restoration outcomes? Some restorative interventions embraced by FLR may compete with specific land uses and thus require careful planning to minimize trade-offs and maximize synergies. Decision making on the restorative intervention combination needs considering the spatial distribution and configuration of the final land uses in the landscape together with its social context and a multi-stakeholder process. Ultimately, finding the right balance between land sharing/sparing approaches will also require navigating governance issues that regulate FLR implementation.

Background The complications from coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) have been the subject of study in diverse scientific reports. However, many aspects that influence the prognosis of the disease are still unknown, such as frailty, which inherently reduces resistance to disease and makes people more vulnerable. This study aimed to explore the complications of COVID-19 in patients admitted to a third-level hospital and to evaluate the relationship between these complications and frailty. Methods An observational, descriptive, prospective study was performed in 2020. A sample of 254 patients from a database of 3,112 patients admitted to a high-level hospital in Madrid, Spain was analyzed. To assess frailty (independent variable) the Clinical Frailty Scale (CFS) was used. The outcome variables were sociodemographic and clinical, which included complications, length of stay, intensive care unit (ICU) admission and prognosis. Results A total of 13.39% of the patients were pre-frail and 17.32% were frail. Frail individuals had a shorter hospital stay, less ICU admission, higher mortality and delirium, with statistical significance. Conclusion Frailty assessment is a crucial approach in patients with COVID-19, given a higher mortality rate has been demonstrated amongst frail patients. The CFS could be a predictor of mortality in COVID-19.

Ecological restoration (ER) of terrestrial ecosystems has become widespread in past decades. However, assessing its success is complex mainly due to the diversity of objectives pursued, actions undertaken but also statistical methods for treating data. We demonstrate here that, due to the heterogeneity of collected data, the success of restoration actions can be overestimated in meta-analyses. We advocate analyzing distinctly two types of actions in ER, those aiming at increasing an ecosystem attribute (e.g. species richness of a native plant species, ER+), and those aiming at decreasing it (e.g. invasive species cover, ER-). We also suggest that only one index for assessing the success of a restoration action is not enough. We propose here to complete RR (Remaining Recovery) by a novel index informing on ‘what has been restored by comparison to what should have been recovered’: the ‘Achieved Restoration’ index (AR).

En este artículo se analiza el funcionamiento de la diplomacia pública digital en México y Chile. La metodología empleada fue cualitativa y comparativa. Los dos países tienen presencia en el ciberespacio, tanto en páginas web como redes sociales. La Secretaría de Relaciones Exteriores mexicana es muy activa en las redes socia­les, mientras que el Ministerio de Exteriores chileno ha tenido una presencia más tardía en el ciberespacio, pero progresivamente se va posicionando con una agenda que enfatiza sus grandes temas en política exterior. La interacción es el aspecto que menos desarrollo tiene en ambos casos.

This article is intended to make a rereading of Frankenstein; o, The Modern Prometheus (1818) from the thesis presented in Dialectic of Enlightenment (1944) and Eclipse of Reason (1947) of the philosophers Adorno and Horkheimer, trying to prove that Victor Frankenstein is an instrumental´s rationality slave.

Abstract Expanding conservation efforts to private land is paramount to halt biodiversity loss and achieve global conservation targets. Individual landowners can play disproportionately important roles by establishing private parks and managing them with biodiversity‐focused objectives. However, several constraints hinder the expansion of such initiatives, and little is known about their extent, characteristics and keys for success. Here, we provide insights on the conditions that favoured the establishment and conservation outcomes of a private reserve in central Spain whose management has been fully conservation‐oriented for the past two decades. We report on the actions implemented to accomplish four key targets that aimed at protecting and enhancing wildlife populations, and on the landholder's motivations to devote his personal resources to pursue this goal. After acquiring the land, the landowner has made efforts to restore native wildlife populations after decades of poaching and intensive cattle raising. Key actions included re‐establishing degraded vegetation and fostering keystone rabbit populations to sustain carnivore populations. Water bodies are maintained to provide drinking points and foster aquatic animal populations; nest boxes target birds and bats. Many actions resulted from advice from multiple stakeholders, including public administration officers, academics, local residents and NGOs. The estate's formal conservation status has made it a partner in major conservation projects, including repeated releases of captively bred Iberian lynx. The landowner's determination for long‐term conservation was formalised through a legal protected‐area status. The condition that drove the creation of the reserve was the landowner's intrinsic motivation, which resulted from conservation ethic, personal identity and the desire to share and educate about the multiple values of nature. Additionally, several external conditions, such as accessibility and appropriate reserve size (biophysical conditions), the lack of need for economic activities (economic), a positive and pro‐active relationship with multiple stakeholders (social‐cultural), the protected‐area status and the capacity to make decisions independently (governance‐related), have helped sustain the project. The landholder suggests that public policy should reduce the bureaucratic burden to intrinsically motivated landowners and provide them technical advice, trust and financial incentives to expand conservation on private land.

Abstract Oak regeneration and the expansion of forested sites in Eurasia rely on acorn dispersal by animals, especially the Eurasian jay (Garrulus glandarius). However, in open agroforestry systems where jays are absent, such as old fields far from acorn sources, oak recruitment still occurs. We hypothesize that the Eurasian magpie (Pica pica), an abundant corvid in this system, substitutes the jay in its seed dispersal function. By ringing 169 magpies, video recording >7500 acorn removal events with trail cameras, and radio‐tagging 337 acorns, we quantified that (1) magpies cached 41–56% of the annual acorn production of Quercus ilex trees in single caches on the ground; (2) breeding pairs, and especially males, were the main acorn dispersers; (3) each breeding magpie cached 169–1372 acorns in 6 weeks; and (4) the effectiveness of dispersal (percentage of cached acorns resulting in seedlings) was 0.6–2.4%, which (5) yielded a high density of emerged seedlings (56–439 seedlings/ha). We evidence that magpie could be a key species in the regeneration of oak agroforestry mosaics because they massively and effectively dispersed acorns. However, in our particular study site, effectiveness was low probably due to herbivory and summer drought stress (i.e., a context limitation rather than an intrinsic limitation of the disperser). As the distributions of magpies and oaks overlap widely in Eurasia, effective acorn dispersal by magpies could have a significant role in large‐scale oak forest recovery in strongly fragmented landscapes.

Abstract The PREDICTS project—Projecting Responses of Ecological Diversity In Changing Terrestrial Systems (https://www.nhm.ac.uk/our-science/our-work/biodiversity/predicts.html)—has collated from published studies a large, reasonably representative database of comparable samples of biodiversity from multiple sites that differ in the nature or intensity of human impacts relating to land use. We have used this evidence base to develop global and regional statistical models of how local biodiversity responds to these measures. We describe and make freely available this 2016 release of the database, containing more than 3.2 million records sampled at over 26,000 locations and representing over 47,000 species. We outline how the database can help in answering a range of questions in ecology and conservation biology. To our knowledge, this is the largest and most geographically and taxonomically representative database of spatial comparisons of biodiversity that has been collated to date; it will be useful to researchers and international efforts wishing to model and understand the global status of biodiversity.

Recovery of damaged ecosystems can vary in time and extent. Here, Moreno-Mateos and colleagues perform a meta-analysis to describe and quantify what they call recovery debt, an interim reduction in biodiversity, populations, and biogeochemical function of ecosystems during the recovery process.

Restoration of degraded ecosystems is known to enhance biodiversity and vegetation structure. Using a global meta-analysis, Crouzeilles et al. identify the drivers of restoration success in forest ecosystems at both the local and landscape scales.

Forest loss and degradation in the Brazilian Amazon due to mining activities has been intense for many years. To reverse this situation, a range of restoration programs for deforested and degraded areas have been created and implemented. The aim of this study was to analyze the tree composition, successional stage, dispersal and pollination syndromes, conservation status of tree species, and proximity to seed sources under different forest restoration techniques (seedling planting, natural regeneration, and assisted natural regeneration or nucleation) implemented in post-mining sites in the Paragominas municipality (Pará, Brazil). Sixty permanent plots with a restoration age of three years were selected for tree sampling. A total of 119 species, 83 genera and 27 botanical families were identified. Sites restored with different techniques significantly differed in tree composition. Seedling planting sites exhibited the highest abundance, species richness, and diversity values. These were dominated less by pioneer species when compared to the natural regeneration and nucleation sites. Entomophilic pollination and zoochory dispersal were highly represented in the three types of restored sites. Abundance and species richness were negatively correlated with distance from plots to seed sources, and they sharply declined in natural regeneration and nucleation plots at >250 m from seed sources. Four threatened species were identified in the restored sites. We conclude that a combination of different restoration strategies at three-year-old post-mining restoration sites in the Brazilian Amazon results in the recovery of considerable levels of local tree diversity.

Under suitable conditions, deforested land used for agricultural crops or pastures can revert to forest through the assisted or unassisted process of natural regeneration. These naturally regenerating forests conserve biodiversity, provide a wide array of ecosystem goods and services, and support rural economies and livelihoods. Based on studies in tropical and temperate forest ecosystems, we summarize cases where natural regeneration is occurring in agricultural landscapes around the world and identify the socio-ecological factors that favor its development and affect its qualities, outcomes and persistence. We describe how the economic and policy context creates barriers for the development, persistence, and management of naturally regenerating forests, including perverse outcomes of policies intended to enhance protection of native forests. We conclude with recommendations for specific economic and policy interventions at local, national, and global scales to enhance forest natural regeneration and to promote the sustainable management of regrowth forests on former agricultural land while strengthening rural communities and economies.

Global forest restoration targets have been set, yet policy makers and land managers lack guiding principles on how to invest limited resources to achieve them. We conducted a meta-analysis of 166 studies in naturally regenerating and actively restored forests worldwide to answer: (1) To what extent do floral and faunal abundance and diversity and biogeochemical functions recover? (2) Does recovery vary as a function of past land use, time since restoration, forest region, or precipitation? (3) Does active restoration result in more complete or faster recovery than passive restoration? Overall, forests showed a high level of recovery, but the time to recovery depended on the metric type measured, past land use, and region. Abundance recovered quickly and completely, whereas diversity recovered slower in tropical than in temperate forests. Biogeochemical functions recovered more slowly after agriculture than after logging or mining. Formerly logged sites were mostly passively restored and generally recovered quickly. Mined sites were nearly always actively restored using a combination of planting and either soil amendments or recontouring topography, which resulted in rapid recovery of the metrics evaluated. Actively restoring former agricultural land, primarily by planting trees, did not result in consistently faster or more complete recovery than passively restored sites. Our results suggest that simply ending the land use is sufficient for forests to recover in many cases, but more studies are needed that directly compare the value added of active versus passive restoration strategies in the same system. Investments in active restoration should be evaluated relative to the past land use, the natural resilience of the system, and the specific objectives of each project.

Understanding and predicting the likely response of ecosystems to climate change are crucial challenges for ecology and for conservation biology. Nowhere is this challenge greater than in the tropics as these forests store more than half the total atmospheric carbon stock in their biomass. Biomass is determined by the balance between biomass inputs (i.e., growth) and outputs (mortality). We can expect therefore that conditions that favor high growth rates, such as abundant water supply, warmth, and nutrient-rich soils will tend to correlate with high biomass stocks. Our main objective is to describe the patterns of above ground biomass (AGB) stocks across major tropical forests across climatic gradients in Northwestern South America. We gathered data from 200 plots across the region, at elevations ranging between 0 to 3400 m. We estimated AGB based on allometric equations and values for stem density, basal area, and wood density weighted by basal area at the plot-level. We used two groups of climatic variables, namely mean annual temperature and actual evapotranspiration as surrogates of environmental energy, and annual precipitation, precipitation seasonality, and water availability as surrogates of water availability. We found that AGB is more closely related to water availability variables than to energy variables. In northwest South America, water availability influences carbon stocks principally by determining stand structure, i.e. basal area. When water deficits increase in tropical forests we can expect negative impact on biomass and hence carbon storage.

The main soil physical-chemical features, the concentrations of a set of pollutants, and the soil microbiota linked to penguin rookeries have been studied in 10 selected sites located at the South Shetland Islands and the Antarctic Peninsula (Maritime Antarctica). This study aims to test the hypothesis that biotransport by penguins increases the concentration of pollutants, especially heavy metals, in Antarctic soils, and alters its microbiota. Our results show that penguins do transport certain chemical elements and thus cause accumulation in land areas through their excreta. Overall, a higher penguin activity is associated with higher organic carbon content and with higher concentrations of certain pollutants in soils, especially cadmium, cooper and arsenic, as well as zinc and selenium. In contrast, in soils that are less affected by penguins' faecal depositions, the concentrations of elements of geochemical origin, such as iron and cobalt, increase their relative weighted contribution, whereas the above-mentioned pollutants maintain very low levels. The concentrations of pollutants are far higher in those penguin rookeries that are more exposed to ship traffic. In addition, the soil microbiota of penguin-influenced soils was studied by molecular methods. Heavily penguin-affected soils have a massive presence of enteric bacteria, whose relative dominance can be taken as an indicator of penguin influence. Faecal bacteria are present in addition to typical soil taxa, the former becoming dominant in the microbiota of penguin-affected soils, whereas typical soil bacteria, such as Actinomycetales, co-dominate the microbiota of less affected soils. Results indicate that the continuous supply by penguin faeces, and not the selectivity by increased pollutant concentrations is the main factor shaping the soil bacterial community. Overall, massive penguin influence results in increased concentrations of certain pollutants and in a strong change in taxa dominance in the soil bacterial community.

Regulation of agricultural pests managing their natural enemies represents an alternative to chemical pesticides. We assessed the potential of insectivorous birds as pest regulators in woody crops located in central Spain. A total of 417 nest boxes installed in five field study sites (one vineyard, two fruit orchards, and two olive groves) were monitored for use and breeding of insectivorous birds and other species for four consecutive years (2013-2016). At all field sites except the two olive groves, where birds never occupied the nest boxes, predation experiments were conducted with Greater wax moth (Galleria mellonella) sentinel caterpillars, and food consumption by birds was estimated. Nesting of insectivorous birds, chiefly Great tit (Parus major), and sparrows (Passer domesticus and P. montanus) increased over time, averaging 60% per field site in the vineyard and fruit orchards by the fourth year. Use of nest boxes by sparrows and by Garden dormouse (Eliomys quercinus) was high at the fruit orchards (70%) and the vineyard (30%), respectively. Micro-habitat characteristics (nest box level) and meso-habitat characteristics (patch level) strongly affected use of nest boxes and bird breeding (i.e. number of laid eggs and produced chicks) in different years. Distance to natural or semi-natural vegetation did not consistently affect bird breeding, nor did we see consistent evidence of competition between adjacent breeding birds. Predation rates of sentinel caterpillars were approximately one-third higher near boxes with nesting birds (31.51 ± 43.13%) than at paired distant areas without nest boxes (22.45% ± 38.58%). Food consumption by insectivorous birds per ha and breeding season were conservatively estimated to range from 0.02 kg in one fruit orchard to 0.15 kg in the vineyard. We conclude that installation of nest boxes in Mediterranean woody crops enhances populations of insectivorous birds that regulate pests, but that the effects are moderate and highly context-dependent.

Después de un incendio forestal es común la retirada de la madera quemada, pero se sabe poco sobre cómo esta práctica afecta a la recolonización de la zona quemada por parte de especies del género Quercus como la encina. En un pinar de repoblación quemado de Sierra Nevada (sur de España) se estableció una parcela de 18 ha con tres tratamientos experimentales de la madera quemada: Extracción (corte y desramado de los árboles, con apilamiento de los troncos y astillado de las ramas), Ramas (corte del 90 % de los troncos, sin extracción) y Control (sin acciones). Dentro de esta parcela sobrevivieron algunos rodales de pinos (1.5 ha en total), y al lado de ella quedaron unos rodales de encinas (Quercus ilex subsp. ballota) productoras de bellotas desde donde se produjo dispersión biótica. En la parcela se monitoreó la emergencia, supervivencia y tamaño de las plántulas de encina a lo largo de siete años. Se establecieron 801 plántulas de encina antes de la implementación de los tratamientos, ya por rebrote o dispersadas poco después del incendio. Después del manejo post-incendio emergieron 447 plántulas en toda la parcela, presumiblemente como consecuencia de la dispersión por arrendajos (Garrulus glandarius): el 62.9 % bajo los pinos vivos y el 37.1 % en el resto de la parcela. La emergencia fue mayor en el tratamiento Control en los primeros años. El factor tratamiento perdió importancia tras la paulatina caída de los árboles quemados, ya que en los últimos años la mayor parte de las bellotas fue dispersada hacia los rodales de pinos vivos. Estos rodales incrementaron la probabilidad de supervivencia pero redujeron el crecimiento, efecto posiblemente asociado a la competencia por nutrientes, luz y agua. Concluimos que los pequeños núcleos de pinos que sobreviven un incendio, al igual que los árboles quemados durante los primeros años, pueden atraer dispersores de bellotas y que en el caso de los pinos vivos será necesaria una segunda perturbación para liberar a las encinas reclutadas de la competencia del dosel. Las prácticas de manejo post-incendio que favorezcan estas estructuras pueden favorecer la regeneración natural del ecosistema.

A thorough understanding of long-term temporal social-ecological dynamics at the national scale helps to explain the current condition of a country's ecosystems and to support environmental policies to tackle future sustainability challenges. We aimed to develop a methodological approach to understand past long-term (1960-2010) social-ecological dynamics in Spain. First, we developed a methodical framework that allowed us to explore complex social-ecological dynamics among biodiversity, ecosystem services, human well-being, drivers of change, and institutional responses. Second, we compiled 21 long-term, national-scale indicators and analyzed their temporal relationships through a redundancy analysis. Third, we used a Bayesian change point analysis to detect evidence of past social-ecological thresholds and historical time periods. Our results revealed that Spain has passed through four social-ecological thresholds that define five different time periods of nature and society relationships. Finally, we discussed how the proposed methodological approach helps to reinterpret national-level ecosystem indicators through a new conceptual lens to develop a more systems-based way of understanding long-term social-ecological patterns and dynamics.

Soil trampling is one of the most obvious direct negative human impacts in Antarctica. Through a range of experiments and field studies based on quantitative physical (soil penetration resistance) and biological (collembolan abundance) indicators, we evaluate the current codes of conduct relating to the protection of Antarctic soils from the consequences of pedestrian impacts. These guidelines include using, where available, established paths that cross vegetation-free soils. However, the effectiveness of this strategy is highly dependent on context. Limited intensity use—below 100 foot passes per year—produces small changes at the soil surface that can recover relatively rapidly, suggesting that the dispersal of activity across wider corridors may be the most appropriate option. However, for paths with a higher use level and those located in steep-sloped sites, it is desirable to define a single track, following stony or bouldery surfaces wherever possible, to keep the disturbed area to a minimum. It is clear that both environmental conditions and expected use levels must be taken into account in determining when and where it is more appropriate to concentrate or disperse human activities. Even though they may have performed satisfactorily to date, the increasing pressure in terms of numbers of visits for certain sites may make it necessary to revise existing codes of conduct.

La restauración ecológica se utiliza a menudo para recuperar los niveles de biodiversidad y de servicios ecosistémicos (SE) en ecosistemas degradados. En general, los resultados de la restauración ecológica se pueden estimar como el progreso o la compleción de la recuperación de indicadores de la integridad ecológica en el estado restaurado respecto al estado degradado o de referencia, respectivamente. Presentamos una síntesis de estos resultados según cuatro meta-análisis globales independientes, obtenidos en una amplia gama de ecosistemas, con énfasis en humedales, agroecosistemas y bosques. La restauración ecológica aumentó la biodiversidad y los SE en 58 y 99%, respectivamente. Sin embargo, estos niveles fueron inferiores a los de los ecosistemas de referencia (-10 y -8%, respectivamente). La recuperación varió entre tipos de ecosistema. Los humedales restaurados tuvieron niveles más altos de biodiversidad y de SE (19 y 43%, respectivamente) en relación a los degradados, aunque los niveles de los SE fueron inferiores (-13%) a los de referencia. La restauración aumentó los niveles de biodiversidad, SE de soporte y SE de regulación de los agroecosistemas en 68, 42 y 120%, respectivamente, y los agroecosistemas restaurados tuvieron niveles de biodiversidad y de estos SE similares a los ecosistemas de referencia. En el caso de los bosques, la recuperación fue completa para todos los SE, mientras que la biodiversidad, aunque aumentó 106% después de la restauración, fue 21% inferior a los niveles de referencia. Existe un hueco en la literatura científica sobre la evaluación cuantitativa de los SE culturales en ecosistemas restaurados. La recuperación de la biodiversidad y de los SE se correlacionaron de forma positiva en las comparaciones de ecosistemas degradados y restaurados en todos los meta-análisis. Concluimos que la restauración ecológica aumenta de forma notable la biodiversidad y los SE, aunque no se alcanzan los niveles de los ecosistemas de referencia, y que la efectividad depende, en gran medida, del contexto. https://doi.org/10.25260/EA.17.27.1.1.252

We identified high-value biodiversity areas (HVBAs) of terrestrial vertebrates according to a combined index of biodiversity (CBI) for each major taxon and a standardized biodiversity index (SBI) for all taxa in 2195 cells of 50 × 50 km in Western Europe to evaluate whether these areas are included in the current protected area networks. The World Database on Protected Areas (WDPA) and NATURA 2000 protected area network were used to assess the protected area cover in HVBAs. WDPA and NATURA 2000 were geographically quite complementary as WDPA is more densely represented in Central and Northern Europe and NATURA 2000 in the Mediterranean basin. A total of 729 cells were identified as HVBAs. From the total of these HVBA areas, NATURA 2000 network was present in more cells (660) than the WDPA network (584 cells). The sum of protected land percentages across all the HVBA cells was 28.8%. The identified HVBA cells according to the SBI included 603 or 78.2% of all vertebrate species in the study region, whereas the identified HVBA cells according to the SBI for individual taxa included 47 (90.4%) species of amphibians, 79 (74.5%) of reptiles, 417 (88.5%) of birds, and 130 (91.5%) of mammals. However, neither network was present in 7 or 3% of the identified HVBA cells. Thus, we recommend expanding protected areas in Europe to fill this gap and improve coverage of vertebrate species to strengthen biodiversity conservation.

The ‘EU Council conclusions on biodiversity post–2010′ re–enforced Europe’s commitment to halt biodiversity loss by 2020. Identifying areas of high–value for biodiversity conservation is an important issue to meet this target. We investigated the geographic pattern of terrestrial vertebrate diversity status in Europe by assessing the species richness, rarity, vulnerability (according to IUCN criteria), and a combined index of the three former for the amphibians, reptiles, bird and mammals of this region. We also correlated the value of all indices with climate and human influence variables. Overall, clear geographic gradients of species diversity were found. The combined biodiversity index indicated that high–value biodiversity areas were mostly located in the Mediterranean basin and the highest vulnerability was found in the Iberian peninsula for most taxa. Across all indexes, the proportion of variance explained by climate and human influence factors was moderate to low. The results obtained in this study have the potential to provide valuable support for nature conservation policies in Europe and, consequently, might contribute to mitigate biodiversity decline in this region.

Los Andes tropicales constituyen una región única con una alta diversidad de hábitats, producto de complejos gradientes espaciales y ambientales. Los bosques montanos de esta región son considerados como una prioridad global de conservación, debido principalmente a su elevada riqueza biológica y de endemismos. Sin embargo su biodiversidad es de las menos conocidas de toda la región tropical, aunque se reconoce la amplia gama de servicios ambientales que prestan, incluyendo la regulación del clima regional y la captura y almacenamiento de carbono. Este artículo ofrece una perspectiva general del estado de conservación de los bosques montanos tropicales andinos y de los retos que esta implica. Asimismo, proporciona información sobre sus amenazas, identificando aquéllas que con mayor probabilidad sean responsables de aumentar el riesgo de extinción de especies. Se resalta la necesidad de disponer de más información sobre el estado de conservación de las especies para identificar las futuras prioridades de conservación en la región. La reciente iniciativa de la "Lista Roja y planeación para la conservación de especies de árboles montanos de los Andes Tropicales", formada por delegados de varios países de la región, constituirá una sólida base para el desarrollo y enfoque de políticas y respuestas de manejo dirigidas a la reducción de la deforestación y pérdida de especies en estos bosques, incluyendo acciones para promover la creación de áreas protegidas, restauración forestal y manejo forestal sostenible.

Los esfuerzos de conservación en la región neotropical están limitados por la falta de información disponible sobre las especies, ya que muchas no han sido descritas o se tiene poca información sobre ellas. La Red Internacional de Inventarios Forestales (BIOTREE-NET) concentra y facilita el acceso a la información y el intercambio entre investigadores, gestores y conservacionistas, organizando y estandarizando los datos de especies de árboles procedentes de inventarios forestales en la región mesoamericana en una única base de datos que incluya información espacial. Este artículo explica el ámbito y objetivos de la red, describe la estructura de la base de datos e identifica los principales avances realizados, así como los retos y perspectivas futuras. La base de datos contiene más de 50 000 registros de árboles de unas 5000 especies, distribuidas en más de 2000 parcelas muestreadas desde el suroeste de México hasta Panamá. La información es heterogénea, tanto en su naturaleza y forma como en la cobertura geográfica de los inventarios. La base de datos tiene una estructura relacional, con 12 tablas interconectadas, incluyendo información sobre las parcelas, los nombres de las especies, el diámetro a la altura del pecho de los árboles medidos y sus atributos funcionales. Se ha desarrollado un sistema para la corrección de errores tipográficos y la estandarización taxonómica y nomenclatural utilizando como referencia The Plant List (http://theplantlist.org/). También se han generado modelos de distribución potencial para cerca de 1700 especies utilizando distintos métodos y en el futuro se prevé habilitar también el acceso público a los modelos de distribución de especies a través del portal web (http://portal.biotreenet.com). Aunque BIOTREE-NET ha contribuido al desarrollo de mejores modelos de distribución, su mayor potencial radica, en nuestra opinión, en el estudio a nivel de comunidades. Finalmente, se reconoce la necesidad de expandir la red a través de la participación de más investigadores interesados en colaborar con datos para ampliar el conocimiento sobre la biodiversidad forestal en la región neotropical.

El objetivo de este estudio fue estimar el balance de la inversión asociada a la restauración forestal por medio del establecimiento de plantaciones (Vochysia guatemalensis e Hieronyma alchorneoides) y de la regeneración natural (bosque secundario sin y con manejo intensivo). Se consideraron diferentes escenarios económicos donde se evaluaron ingresos por: venta de la madera, pago de los servicios ambientales (PSA) provenientes del Fondo de Financiamiento Forestal (FONAFIFO) del gobierno costarricense y por venta de certificados de reducción de emisiones de carbono (CER). Se comparó la actividad forestal contra usos alternativos de la tierra como ganadería, banano y piña. El análisis de las inversiones se evalúo tomando como criterio el valor esperado de la tierra (VET) con tasas anuales de descuento aceptables (TMA) del 3%, 6% y 9,0% las cuales reflejan las preferencias y condiciones de diferentes inversionistas. Para las plantaciones forestales y bosque secundario sin manejo y con manejo intensivo se estimó una inversión totalpromedio de US$5200, US$1730 y US$1373 ha-1, respectivamente. Los ingresos estimados por la venta de la madera superaron los US$21142 ha-1 entre ambas especies, US$1250 y US$13408 ha-1 para el bosque secundario con manejo mínimo y con manejo intensivo, respectivamente. Los ingresos por CER y por PSA representan cantidades marginales en comparación con los ingresos por madera. El cultivo de piña y el de banano como usos alternativos de la tierra son los más rentables, seguido por las plantaciones forestales y por último la ganadería y los bosques secundarios con y sin manejo, que no solo son los menos rentables, sino que tienen sus valores calculados por debajo del precio de la tierra. La restauración forestal no resulta una actividad atractiva económicamente para el propietario de la tierra, basado solamente en ingresos provenientes de pagos de servicios ambientales o venta de carbono a los precios actuales. Los precios más altos de la madera y una tasa de descuento baja (que representan condiciones macroeconómicas favorables), son los factores determinantes para hacer eficientes y sostenibles las inversiones forestales tanto en bosque secundario como en plantaciones forestales en la región Caribe de Costa Rica.

El grupo de Evaluación de la sostenibilidad universitaria de la Comisión Sectorial de Calidad Ambiental, Desarrollo Sostenible y Prevención de Riesgos (CADEP) de la CRUE viene trabajando desde 2007 en el estudio sistemático de las iniciativas de sostenibilidad en las universidades españolas. Entre 2010 y 2011 ha desarrollado el estudio "Evaluación de las políticas universitarias de sostenibilidad como facilitadoras para el desarrollo de los campus de excelencia internacional (CEI)" en el que se han definido ámbitos e indicadores con los que medir la contribución de las universidades españolas a la sostenibilidad. Estos indicadores constituyen un marco evaluativo del grado de avance de las políticas de sostenibilidad, haciendo los progresos más visibles para la comunidad universitaria y la sociedad. Para probar esta herramienta seconsultaron 31 universidades que rellenaron el cuestionario y fueron visitadas para recoger sus dudas y sugerencias y, además, realizar un acercamiento a los programas de sostenibilidad en elsistema universitario español. También se entrevistaron a los responsables institucionales ytécnicos de estos programas. En general, las universidades estudiadas presentan unmayoravance en actuaciones relacionadas con la sensibilización ambiental, los residuos y la docencia. En menormedida han implementado medidas sobre responsabilidad social, evaluación del impacto ambiental, agua y compra verde.

Para cada tipo de alteración se citan los casos de estudio más representativos, las principales medidas de minimización y/o mitigación adoptadas, así como las contribuciones específicas realizadas recientemente por científicos de España, en caso de existir. Tras presentar la base de conocimiento existente en la actualidad respecto a los impactos humanos antárticos, el texto se cierra con una serie de recomendaciones dirigidas a mejorar el seguimiento de los mismos. Estas directrices deberán guiar los programas de investigación implementados en los próximos años para rentabilizar al máximo los recursos empleados y reforzar la protección de este emblemático lugar.

This study assesses whether the afforestation approach consisting in the introduction of woodland islets in “agricultural seas” can reconcile the restoration of woody vegetation and the persistence of open-habitat bird populations, providing further opportunities for other forest species to enrich bird diversity at the landscape level. We compared the species richness and abundance of bird communities in a field with 16 introduced woodland islets and in a nearby abandoned field located in central Spain during spring and winter time. The woodland islets presented higher accumulated species richness as well as a higher probability of finding new species if sampling effort were increased only in winter time. These trends were the opposite during spring time. Mean species richness and mean bird abundance were lower at the woodland islets than at the abandoned field in both seasons. We found a higher abundance of open-habitat specialist species in the abandoned field. Woodland islets favoured the wintering of chiffchaff Phylloscopus collybita. We did not find any effects on the only forest specialist species (blue tit Parus caeruleus) in spring. Bird richness and abundance were higher in edge islets than in inner islets. The introduction of larger and mixed plantations connected by hedgerows and a management that favoured the development of big trees, a lower tree density and a diverse shrub layer could promote bird diversity, allowing forest specialists and open-habitat species to coexist at the landscape scale.
