Materials from renewable resources like pectin and nanocelluloses are useful for the controlled release of drugs such as hydroxychloroquine (HCQ), whose potential for treating tumor cells was recently verified. In this study, pectin films with HCQ were produced by casting at different pH values (4, 7, and 10). Additionally, pectin/HCQ membranes formed at pH 4 were incorporated with cellulose nanocrystals (CNC) and nanofibrils (CNF). Films are mainly amorphous with good compatibility between HCQ and pectin matrix. Release tests showed that films containing CNC and formed at pH 4 released the drug more slowly in phosphate buffer medium compared to other membranes. Additionally, film formed at pH 4 presented slower HCQ release at acid medium. The pectin platform proved to be an easy way to deliver HCQ with different kinetic rates by changing the pH and incorporating nanocellulose particles into the pectin film-forming solutions.

Abstract Background Pretreatments are one of the main bottlenecks for the lignocellulose conversion process and the search for cheaper and effective pretreatment methodologies for each biomass is a complex but fundamental task. Here, we used a 2ν5−1 fractional factorial design (FFD) to optimize five pretreatment variables: milling time, temperature, double treatment, chemical concentration, and pretreatment time in acid–alkali (EA) and acid–organosolv (EO) pretreatments, applied to elephant grass leaves. Results FFD allowed optimization of the pretreatment conditions using a reduced number of experiments and allowed the identification of secondary interactions between the factors. FFD showed that the temperature can be kept at its lower level and that the first acid step can be eliminated in both pretreatments, without significant losses to enzymatic hydrolysis. EA resulted in the highest release of reducing sugars (maximum of 205 mg/g substrate in comparison to 152 mg/g in EO and 40 mg/g in the untreated sample), using the following conditions in the alkali step: [NaOH] = 4.5% w/v; 85 °C and 100 min after ball milling the sample. Electrostatic phenomena were discovered long ago but their interpretation according to well-established atomic-molecular theory is still lacking. As a result, electrostatic phenomena are often irreproducible and uncontrolled, causing serious practical problems. Highly reproducible recent experimental results on electrostatic charging from this and other laboratories are reviewed in this work, together with a description of the relevant but not so usual Kelvin probe and Faraday cup techniques. These results support a new model for electrostatic charging of dielectrics and insulated metals, based on the role of moist atmosphere as a charge reservoir.

O poli (ácido lático-co-ácido glicólico) é um copolímero biodegradável e bioreabsorvível. Suas propriedades físico-químicas têm sido estudadas com o intuito de modular sua suscetibilidade à degradação e suas interações com células e fluidos biológicos para aplicações na área médica e odontológica. Neste trabalho, membranas de poli (ácido lático-co-ácido glicólico) com e sem plastificante foram preparadas pela técnica de evaporação do solvente e caracterizadas in vitro e in vivo. Os resultados in vitro mostraram que a adição de plastificante diminui a temperatura de transição vítrea (Tg) das membranas e, conseqüentemente, aumenta a flexibilidade das mesmas. Com o avanço da degradação, verifica-se o aparecimento de regiões cristalinas e de poros. Os estudos in vivo mostraram que o polímero degradou rapidamente em contato com a pele sem causar inflamações sérias e protegeu a área ulcerada da ação de agentes externos. Além disso, a cicatrização das feridas foi mais rápida na presença das membranas mostrando que as mesmas podem ser potencialmente utilizadas como curativos para pele.Poly (lactide-co-glycolide) is a polymer with bioabsorption and biodegradation properties. The physical and chemical properties of this polymer have been studied in order to modulate its susceptibility to degradation and its interaction with cells and biological fluids, aiming at medical and dental applications. In this work, membranes of poly (lactide-co-glycolide) with and without plasticizer were prepared by solvent evaporation and characterized by in vitro and in vivo experiments. In vitro studies showed that the glass transition temperature decreased due to the addition of plasticizer and, consequently, their flexibility increased. During degradation, crystalline areas and porous appear. In vivo studies showed that the polymer degraded rapidly without causing inflammation and protected areas that were exposed to external agents. Furthermore, membranes improved wound healing time, indicating that they can be potentially used in skin repair.

The cellulose present in the cell wall of vegetables prevents the greater release of nutrients to the animal. Therefore, the use of the cellulase enzyme is a viable strategy as it is capable of breaking cellulose bonds, releasing nutrients such as glucose, increasing dietary energy, and thus improving the productive performance of birds. Trichoderma reesei is efficient in the production of cellulase, which is produced via submerged fermentation followed by purification, formulation, and drying. Therefore, an experiment was carried out using 240 male broilers of the Cobb-500® lineage to verify the effects resulting from the addition of powdered (500 g/t and 1000 g/t) and liquid (500 mL/t) cellulase over a period of 1 to 21 days. A completely randomized experimental design was used, consisting of four treatments with six replications and ten birds per replication that were housed in an experimental cage. It was observed that performance and digestibility results were significantly different with cellulase supplementation. Also, the relative weight of the large intestine in the period between one and seven days increased when cellulase was added at 1000 g/t. In the period of between eight and 14 days of life, the birds that consumed only the basal diet obtained higher levels of liver protein than those that received the treatments with the addition of the enzyme. However, 15 and 21 days, the consumed feed effect did not occur between thus, it is not conclusive whether hepatotoxicity occurs with the addition of cellulase. For the blood parameters, at 21 days, the diets with added cellulase were not significantly different regarding electrolytes. It was concluded that this cellulase produced by Trichoderma reesei can be included in the animals’ diet.

Glycerin contributes to the animal’s energy metabolism as an important structural component of triglycerides and phospholipids. The present study was carried out to evaluate the effect of replacing corn with 0, 5, 10, and 15% of glycerin in terms of performance, digestibility, carcass yield, relative weights of gastrointestinal tract (GIT) organs, and nutrient metabolism. Four hundred chickens (40.0 g ± 0.05 g) were distributed in a completely randomized design with four treatments and five replicates. Growth parameters were measured at 7, 14, 21, and 42 days. Digestibility of crude protein and fat, carcass yield, relative weights of GIT organs, and biochemical blood profile were measured. The results were subject to an analysis of variance by Tukey’s HSD test (p > 0.05). The inclusion of 5%, 10%, or 15% of glycerin did not influence performance or affect the crude protein and fat digestibility in broilers (p > 0.05) when compared to that of the basal (0%) diet. Similarly, the supplementation of glycerin levels showed no significant influence (p > 0.05) on the relative GIT organ weights, carcass yield, or nutrient metabolism. Thus, we concluded that glycerin may be included in the broilers’ diets in rations of up to 15%.

Introdução: As neoplasias hematológicas, leucemias e linfomas são patologias que afetam o sangue ou tecidos formadores dele. Durante o período de hospitalização, os pacientes podem desenvolver redução da capacidade funcional que pode interferir na sua função respiratória. Objetivo: Avaliar a influência do tempo de internamento sobre a força muscular respiratória e o nível funcional de adultos com leucemia e linfoma. Método: Estudo observacional, com delineamento longitudinal e abordagem quantitativa, realizado na enfermaria onco-hematológica do Complexo Hospitalar Universitário Professor Edgard Santos (Hupes). A avaliação da força muscular respiratória foi mensurada pelo manovacuômetro e a capacidade funcional pela escala de desempenho de Karnofsky (KPS). Resultados: No decorrer do tempo de internamento dos pacientes, houve uma diminuição da pressão expiratória máxima (PEM) (p=0,000), porém não foi observada diferença significativa na pressão inspiratória máxima (PIM) (p>0,05). Em relação à KPS, os pacientes apresentaram nível de funcionalidade de 70%. Conclusão: Este estudo demonstrou que a PEM foi alterada durante o internamento, porém não houve modificação da PIM e da funcionalidade dos pacientes.

Resumo Fundamento O ecocardiograma transtorácico (ETT) tem um papel de triagem no algoritmo diagnóstico da hipertensão pulmonar (HP). Estudos demonstraram uma discordância significativa entre as medições do ETT da pressão arterial pulmonar sistólica (PAPs) e da pressão atrial direita (PAD) e as obtidas pelo cateterismo do coração direito (CCD). Objetivo Comparar as medições do ETT da PAPs e da PAD com as obtidas pelo CCD em pacientes com suspeita de HP. Métodos Pacientes encaminhados a um centro de referência com probabilidade alta ou intermediária de PH ao ETT na admissão hospitalar passaram por CCD. A concordância entre a PAPs e a PAD em ambos os procedimentos foi avaliada pelo teste de Bland-Altman. Diferenças de até 10 mmHg na PAPs e de até 5 mmHg na PAD foram consideradas dentro da variabilidade do teste. A curva de característica de operação do receptor (ROC) foi construída para determinar os valores mais precisos de PAPs e VRT associados ao diagnóstico de HP pelo CCD. O nível de significância estatística adotado foi 5%. Resultados Foram incluídos noventa e cinco pacientes. A análise de Bland-Altman análise revelou um viés de 8,03 mmHg (IC 95%: -34,9 a 50,9) na PAPs e -3,30 mmHg (IC 95%: -15,9 a 9,3) na PAD. AUC da PAPs e VRT medidas pelo ETT para a discriminação de provável HP foram de 0,936 (IC 95%: 0,836 a 1,0) e 0,919 (IC 95%: 0,837 a 1,0), respectivamente. Entretanto, apenas 33,4% da estimativa ecocardiográfica da PAPs e 55,1% da PAD foram precisas, em comparação às medições obtidas pelo CCD. Conclusão O ETT tem um alto poder discriminatório como método diagnóstico de triagem para HP, apesar de apresentar discordâncias entre os valores absolutos de PAPs e PAD, em comparação às medições por CCD.

Abstract Background Pulmonary Hypertension (PH) impacts negatively on patients’ health-related quality of life (HRQoL). The Cambridge Pulmonary Hypertension Outcome Review (CAMPHOR) was the first PH-specific and validated instrument for use in different languages worldwide. This report describes the adaptation and psychometric validation of the CAMPHOR into Brazilian Portuguese language. Methods The translation and validation process included a bilingual and lay panel translation; cognitive debriefing interviews; psychometric testing in two repeated times assessing internal consistency, reproducibility and validity of the questionnaire. The Nottingham Health Profile (NHP) questionnaire was used as a comparator to test for convergent validity. Results The translation captured the same concepts as the English questionnaire and produced a comprehensive instrument in a Brazilian-Portuguese version expressing common, natural language. The psychometric evaluation involved 102 patients (48.8 ± 14.5 years, 80,4% female]. Cronbach’s alpha coefficients were above 0.9 on all three CAMPHOR scales. There was excellent test-retest reliability (coefficients above 0.85 on all scales). CAMPHOR Symptoms scale and Activities scale correlated highly with Physical Mobility section and CAMPHOR QoL scale was strongly associated with the Emotional Reactions and Social Isolation sections of NHP. Heart rate recovery in 1 minute (HRR1) after the end of the 6-minute walk test (6MWT) is a non-invasive method of determining autonomic dysfunction. This parameter remains largely unexplored in pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) registries. We aimed to define the cut-off value and accuracy for abnormal HRR1 after the 6MWT and to investigate the association between HRR1 and clinical worsening in patients with PAH. This composite outcome was defined as first occurrence of all-cause death OR hospitalization from any cause OR disease progression characterized by decreased ≥ 15% in six-minute walking distance from baseline AND start of new specific PAH treatment or persistent worsening of World Health Organization functional class (WHO-FC). We performed a prospective cohort study that included 102 consecutive patients with PAH confirmed by right heart catheterization that underwent an 6MWT upon the diagnosis, recruited from September 2004 to April 2020 and followed up until April 2021 or death. Pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) is a disease of the lung blood vessels that results in right heart failure. PAH is thought to occur in about 5% to 10% of patients with hepatosplenic schistosomiasis, particularly due to S. mansoni. The lung blood vessel injury may result from a combination of embolization of eggs through portocaval shunts into the lungs causing localized Type 2 inflammatory response and vessel remodeling, triggering of autonomous pathology that becomes independent of the antigen, and high cardiac output as seen in portopulmonary hypertension. The condition is likely underdiagnosed as there is little systematic screening, and risk factors for developing PAH are not known. Screening is done by echocardiography, and formal diagnosis requires invasive right heart catheterization. Patients with Schistosoma-associated PAH show reduced functional capacity and can be treated with pulmonary vasodilators, which improves symptoms and may improve survival. There are animal models of this disease that might help in understanding disease pathogenesis and identify novel targets to screen and treatment. Pathogenic mechanisms include Type 2 immunity and activation and signaling in the TGF-β pathway. There are still major uncertainties regarding Schistosoma-associated PAH development, course and treatment.

Rio Doce watershed has centuries of land degradation and it was the main victim of the worst environmental disaster in Brazil's history. This process of deforestation and soil erosion could be significantly mitigated if compliance to the new Brazilian Native Vegetation Protection Law (NVPL) would be ensured. Here, we show how the percentage of forest kept in areas of permanent preservation (APP) required by the NVPL drives the overall resilience and resistance of the entire Rio Doce watershed and how it contributes to the national restoration commitments. We used water quality as a proxy for watershed resilience and resistance and we found that compliance to NVPL would require restoration of about 716 thousand hectares of riverine forest across the watershed. We found that increased forested areas improved watershed resistance and resilience during the rainy and dry seasons, respectively. Our estimates suggest that the implementation of the NVPL could improve water quality, in addition to removing 14 Gt CO2 yr−1 ha−1 from the atmosphere. At this scale, the forest restoration effort would represent 6% of Brazil's restoration commitment. Financial feasibility of such a restoration enterprise is also achievable; at the highest possible estimate, it would compromise about 59% of the total fund proposed by the mining companies responsible for the accident. Given the low socioeconomic indicators of this basin, intervention should be designed so as to improve local livelihoods and, therefore, contribute to local adaptation and sustainable development.

O transtorno do espectro autista interrompe processos normais de desenvolvimento social, cognitivo e comunicativo, manifestando-se normalmente até os três anos de idade e prevalência no sexo masculino. Estudos buscam fatores que possam contribuir para a redução da manifestação de sintomas ou características especificas. O principal objetivo foi avaliar a presença de alterações comportamentais e sintomas de distúrbios gastrointestinais em decorrência da restrição de glúten e caseína em portadores do autismo. O estudo foi submetido ao Comitê de Ética em Pesquisa do Centro Universitário do Sul de Minas e realizado na Fundação Varginhense de Assistência de Excepcionais em Varginha - Minas Gerais, no segundo semestre de 2015. Foram avaliados 8 autistas com idade entre 2 e 25 anos. Após orientação aos pais, houve intervenção dietética, sugerindo a restrição da caseína por 4 semanas e posteriormente do glúten por 7 semanas, totalizando 11 semanas de restrição. Todos os voluntários apresentaram melhora em pelo menos um dos sintomas característicos do transtorno. O sintoma que apresentou maior evolução foi a agressividade em 62,5% (n=5), seguido da estereotipia em 50% (n=4) dos voluntários (p = 0,01). Com relação aos sintomas gastrointestinais, quatro mães relataram melhora após restrição do glúten e caseína. Em conclusão, observou-se que a restrição dessas proteínas gera melhora dos sintomas apresentados que pode impactar na qualidade de vida dos indivíduos com o transtorno do espectro autista. No entanto, mais estudos randomizados, controlados, com cálculo amostral são necessários para confirmar os efeitos dessa dieta.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate respiratory muscle strength and six-minute walk test (6MWT) variables in patients with uncontrolled severe asthma (UCSA). METHODS: This was a cross-sectional study involving UCSA patients followed at a university hospital. The patients underwent 6MWT, spirometry, and measurements of respiratory muscle strength, as well as completing the Asthma Control Test (ACT). The Mann-Whitney test was used in order to analyze 6MWT variables, whereas the Kruskal-Wallis test was used to determine whether there was an association between the use of oral corticosteroids and respiratory muscle strength. RESULTS: We included 25 patients. Mean FEV1 was 58.8 ± 21.8% of predicted, and mean ACT score was 14.0 ± 3.9 points. No significant difference was found between the median six-minute walk distance recorded for the UCSA patients and that predicted for healthy Brazilians (512 m and 534 m, respectively; p = 0.14). During the 6MWT, there was no significant drop in SpO2. Mean MIP and MEP were normal (72.9 ± 15.2% and 67.6 ± 22.2%, respectively). Comparing the patients treated with at least four courses of oral corticosteroids per year and those treated with three or fewer, we found no significant differences in MIP (p = 0.15) or MEP (p = 0.45). CONCLUSIONS: Our findings suggest that UCSA patients are similar to normal subjects in terms of 6MWT variables and respiratory muscle strength. The use of oral corticosteroids has no apparent impact on respiratory muscle strength.

Abstract The search for high nutritional value, convenience, low-calorie foods with pleasant sensory characteristics which provide health benefits, makes food bars a promising product in the food sector, and they are already being considered as healthy alternatives according to common sense. The objectives of this study were: (i) to evaluate the interest and the way in which consumers understand the information on food labels; (ii) to determine consumer habits; and (iii) to determine the sugar contents of commercial food bars (conventional, sugar-free and light) to confirm the veracity of the information available on the labels of these products. Regarding the consumption of food bars, the majority of the respondents consumed this product and, although most of them considered them to be a healthy product due to the allegation of being rich in fibre and cereals, even with the knowledge of the presence of sugar, the main reasons taken into consideration when buying them were convenience and practicality. Socio-demographic variables such as gender, age, income and educational level influenced the standards and behaviours of consumption of the product. The quantification of sugar in commercial food bars indicated that these products could be considered as foods with intermediate to high amounts of sugar. The results obtained for sugar-free bars were even more worrying because the concentrations of sugar found indicated a lack of compliance with applicable regulations for this category for all the brands evaluated.

Abstract: Morbihan Syndrome is a rare entity with unknown etiology. It is clinically characterized by chronic erythematous edema on the face - especially in the middle and upper third of the face - and creates abnormal facial contours that are initially intermitent but become permanent with the development of the syndrome. The histopathology is nonspecific and its therapy is a major challenge due to poor response to the various treatment options. We present the case of a male patient with a five-month-history of disease.

Mycetomas are a chronic skin infection characterized by perilesional edema, formation of sinus tracts, and discharge of purulent or seropurulent exudate containing grains. This report aims to demonstrate the clinical diagnosis (by dermoscopy) of a skin lesion that initially bared no clinical features of a mycetoma.
