This study examines the impact of the recycled brick powder (RBP) replacement rate, especially at elevated temperatures on RBP-ultra-high-performance concrete (UHPC) properties such as the stress–strain curve, Poisson’s ratio, elastic modulus, and axial compressive strength through uniaxial compression experiments. The results show that with the increase of heating temperature, the axial compressive strength of the specimen increases first and then decreases under natural cooling (NC). In contrast, Poisson’s ratio shows opposite values. The peak strain continues to increase, and the initial elastic modulus and peak secant modulus continue to decrease. Compared with NC, the axial compressive strength of the specimens under water cooling has been reduced, the peak strain is generally larger, the initial elastic modulus and the peak secant modulus are smaller, and the incorporation of RBP also has a certain effect on the mechanical properties. Through regression analysis, an equation is established to calculate the axial compressive strength of RBP-UHPC with temperature, accounting for variables such as temperature, RBP replacement rate, and cooling method. Furthermore, based on the results of axial compression experiments, a constitutive equation for axial compression in RBP-UHPC after exposure to high temperatures is proposed. Overall, the theoretical curve closely aligns with the experimental curve, verifying its accuracy.

In this study, taking the Jurassic Lianggaoshan Formation (J1l) tight sandstones in the eastern Sichuan Basin as an example, the types and well-logging responses of main sedimentological and diagenetic facies in the lacustrine delta-front are investigated based on summarizing the sedimentary characteristics and reservoir properties. Subsequently, further validation and application are conducted in the study area through machine learning. Research results show that the J1l lacustrine delta-front in the eastern Sichuan Basin mainly develops subaqueous distributary channels and mouth bar sand bodies, exhibiting typical densification reservoirs, with porosity and permeability distributed between 0.48% and 11.24% (av. 3.87%) and 0.0003–0.653 × 10−3 μm2 (av. 0.026 × 10−3 μm2), respectively. Strong compaction and strong cementation are the primary factors leading to densification, whereas chlorite coatings and weak dissolution play constructive roles in preserving some primary pores, creating a small amount of dissolution pores, and enhancing permeability. In terms of manifestation, the pore-throat content with a radius greater than 0.006 μm governs the reservoir quality. Furthermore, five types of diagenetic facies are identified in the J1l subaqueous distributary channels and mouth bars: strong compaction facies (Type I), strong cementation facies (Type II), chlorite-coating and intergranular pore facies (Type III), weak dissolution and intragranular pore facies (Type IV), and medium compaction and cementation facies (Type V). Overall, the thick and coarse-grained subaqueous distributary channels can be considered as the preferred exploration targets for tight oil and gas, with type III and type IV diagenetic facies being the most favorable reservoirs, characterized by well-logging responses of high AC and low GR, DEN, and RT. Based on the fine division of sedimentological and diagenetic facies, establishing well-logging interpretation models and then employing machine learning to achieve sweet spot reservoir prediction can provide valuable insights for tight oil and gas exploration in regions lacking core data.

Shotcrete is one of the most important types of concrete used in engineering construction, and its properties are significantly influenced by accelerators. This study investigates the effects of aluminum sulfate series alkali-free accelerator (AKF) and alkali accelerator (ALK) on the strength, hydration process, characteristic hydration products, and microstructure properties of shotcrete. Techniques such as setting time measurement, isothermal calorimetry, simultaneous thermal analysis, scanning electron microscopy with energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM–EDS), and mercury intrusion porosimetry (MIP) were utilized. The results indicate that both ALK and AKF significantly accelerate and increase the early hydration heat release rate and cumulative hydration heat of Portland cement, producing the characteristic hydration products hexagonal plate AFm and rod AFt, respectively. This acceleration notably speeds up the setting process of Portland cement. ALK negatively impacts the later-stage microstructural development and pore structure filling of hardened cement paste, leading to average reductions of 15.3% and 19.9% in flexural and compressive strengths at 28 days, respectively. Specifically, compared to ALK, AKF shows a faster hydration heat release rate during the induction period and a more significant increase in cumulative hydration heat during the hydration process; the cumulative hydration heat is on average 18.2% higher than AKF. Furthermore, AKF does not hinder the subsequent C3S hydration and C-S-H gel densification process. After 28 days of curing, EDS analysis indicates an average Ca/Si ratio of 1.171 for the AKF-treated shotcrete; the average Ca/Si ratio shows minimal variation from the reference group and is classified as the same type of C-S-H gel as the reference group. Therefore, the strength of hardened cement paste with AKF continues to increase steadily in the later stages. At 28 days, the average flexural strength increased by 10.2%, while the compressive strength decreased by only 3.0%. These findings suggest that AKF enhances the microstructural development and strength of shotcrete, making it a more effective accelerator for engineering applications.

Abstract To overcome the drawbacks caused by the intrinsic brittleness of cementitious materials, various types of fibres were incorporated as reinforcements. Extensive research on Ordinary Portland cement indicated that compared with the use of a single type of fibres, the mixed-use of multiple fibres can significantly improve both strength and toughness of the cementitious composites, which is referred to as the hybrid effect. However, such hybrid effect in multiple fibre-reinforced magnesium phosphate cement-based composite (HFRMC) still lack quantitative understanding. Therefore, this study conducted a series of experiments, including slump flow tests, compression tests, four-point bending tests and microstructure analysis, to investigate the hybrid effect of micro-steel fibres (MSF) and polypropylene (PP) fibres in HFRMC. Two types of mixed designs of HFRMC were conducted: 1. total fibres fraction (including both PP fibres and MSF) was fixed to be 1.6%; 2. PP fibres fraction was fixed to be 1.6% with different addition of MSF. Our results indicated that the slump flow of magnesium phosphate cement mortar varied around 7.6–8.8% with the hybrid use of MSF and PP fibres, while the flexural strength and toughness increased around 13.7–23.1% and 1.6–45.9%, respectively.

Recycled brick powder (RBP) is a kind of solid waste material with pozzolanic activity, which can partially replace cement as a cementitious material to prepare concrete. In this paper, ultra-high-performance concrete (UHPC) was prepared by RBP. The effects of different RBP contents as a mineral admixture on the mechanical properties and microstructure of UHPC were studied by experiments. The results show that RBP has a certain weakening effect on the compressive strength development of UHPC. The compressive strength of UHPC decreases with the increase in the replacement rate of RBP, but the 28 d compressive strength of each group of specimens is not less than 140 MPa. The flexural toughness and tensile strain of RBP UHPC increased first and then decreased with the increase in brick powder replacement rate and reached the maximum at 40% and 30%, respectively. The material exhibits good strain-hardening characteristics. In addition, the incorporation of RBP can improve the bond strength between steel fiber and matrix and the ultimate bond strength reaches the maximum when the substitution rate is 40%. From the perspective of nano-scale characteristics, the RBP not only fills the pores as micro-aggregate, but also participates in the secondary hydration reaction to further optimize the pore structure of UHPC.
