Abstract Backround The utilization of high-quality water in agriculture is increasingly constrained by climate change, affecting availability, quality, and distribution due to altered precipitation patterns, increased evaporation, extreme weather events, and rising salinity levels. Salinity significantly challenges salt-sensitive vegetables like lettuce, particularly in a greenhouse. Hydroponics water quality ensures nutrient solution stability, enhances nutrient uptake, prevents contamination, regulates pH and electrical conductivity, and maintains system components. This study aimed to mitigate salt-induced damage in lettuce grown via the floating culture method under 50 mM NaCl salinity by applying biostimulants. Results We examined lettuce’s physiological, biochemical, and agronomical responses to salt stress after applying biostimulants such as amino acids, arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi, plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR), fulvic acid, and chitosan. The experiment was conducted in a greenhouse with a randomized complete block design, and each treatment was replicated four times. Biostimulant applications alleviated salt’s detrimental effects on plant weight, height, leaf number, and leaf area. Yield increases under 50 mM NaCl were 75%, 51%, 31%, 34%, and 33% using vermicompost, PGPR, fulvic acid, amino acid, and chitosan, respectively. Biostimulants improved stomatal conductance (58–189%), chlorophyll content (4–10%), nutrient uptake (15–109%), and water status (9–107%). They also reduced MDA content by 26–42%. PGPR (1.0 ml L‒1), vermicompost (2 ml L‒1), and fulvic acid (40 mg L‒1) were particularly effective, enhancing growth, yield, phenol, and mineral content while reducing nitrate levels under saline conditions. Conclusions Biostimulants activated antioxidative defense systems, offering a sustainable, cost-effective solution for mitigating salt stress in hydroponic lettuce cultivation.

Abstract Objective The article aims to assess the role of stress and anxiety in relation to the level of emotional control among cancer patients. Currently cancer ranks second, after cardiovascular disease, as the most common cause of death. Moreover, it is predicted that in the coming years, cancer will become the leading cause of death worldwide. This is due to the extended lifespan of the population and also to the presence of carcinogenic factors in the surrounding environment. The emergence of cancer is a significant stressor that affects individuals in diverse ways, leading to cognitive, behavioral, and emotional consequences. In line with the adopted aim, emotional issues are the chosen area of exploration in this article. Methods The study included 102 patients. The differences between the patients' results according to various scales and the results produced by the validation group data were examined using one‐sample t‐tests. The relationships between the quantitative variables were determined using Spearman's rho coefficients, and the relationships between the quantitative and qualitative variables were verified using Kruskal‐Wallis tests. Results The participants exhibited higher anxiety suppression levels than individuals in the normalization group. They sought emotional support more frequently than the average person in the population, turned to religion, engaged in other such activities, lived in denial more often, discontinued activities, and displayed a sense of humor less frequently. The more frequently they controlled their anger, the less they sought emotional and instrumental support, catharsis, and attempted to accept the situation and cease being active. Additionally, controlling anxiety, sadness, and depression coexisted with self‐blame, denial, and compensatory actions. Conclusions Cancer patients face intense anxiety. Emotional and instrumental support, along with the ability to express and manage emotions, are crucial for these patients, especially within the context of facing the challenge of cancer. Finding constructive ways to express strong and difficult emotions prevents their accumulation and reduces the need for emotional suppression. Preventive actions should be oriented toward supporting the emotional competencies of patients.

Police organizations worldwide have introduced various organizational and operational changes to cope with the demands placed on them by the circumstances of the COVID-19 pandemic as effectively as possible. The intensification in the use of digital communication channels is one of those adaptations that enabled the functioning of the police at the organizational level, but simultaneously were a source of stress for police officers. In addition, this adaptation of police communication channels could be complex in rural and suburban parts of Croatia due to relatively high proportions of the elderly population and unequal availability of internet connections. This article aims to determine how the use of digital communication channels and in-person police communication during the COVID-19 pandemic affected how the police coped with this crisis on an organizational and personal level in suburban and rural communities. Quantitative research using a voluntary and anonymous survey method was conducted on a convenient sample of 367 police officers from two police administrations in Croatia covering predominantly suburban and rural areas. The results of the Jonckheere-Terpstra trend test and the non-parametric (Spearman) correlation test showed that police officers who estimated that they worked more on community policing activities and problem-solving in direct contact with citizens estimated that they better coped with the COVID-19 pandemic on a personal level, while police officers who estimated that they used digital communication channels more perceived that they better coped with the COVID-19 pandemic on an organizational level.

The purpose of this paper is to investigate stress-related experiences and coping solutions for public relations (PR) professionals, as relevant dimensions related to their well-being, creativity, and outcomes. The framework of the study is linked to the state of the PR profession, its role, and potential developments. It is based on qualitative research, using in-depth semi-structured interviews with seventeen senior professionals in PR from companies in Romania. The thematic analysis revealed, from a top-level professionals’ perspective, that Romanian PR activity is still a very fluid one and its role and value are not yet clearly integrated. This generates important levels of negative stress for PR professionals. Besides that, positive stress is associated to PR activity for enthusiastic PR professionals. The findings underline a series of seven stress factors and three categories of solutions for coping, involving the professionals but also academia, professional bodies, and, eventually, organizations. The authors of this study emphasize the importance of supporting the development of the profession as a premise for more positive working experiences of PR professionals. This can be achieved by precisely using PR tools, to establish a set of clear standards and increase PR literacy for non-PR people, both for the benefit of PR professionals and those who pay for their services. The lack of a coherent framework on the role of PR brings many challenges to the activity of PR professionals. The negative stress they perceive in daily activity is partially an extension of the fragmented and incomplete development of the PR profession, and the multivariate and disconnected pace regarding advances in theory and practice in the field. These must be considered and addressed equally within PR research, training and education, practice, and PR-dedicated associations.

Introduction. This paper addresses health issues of the modern young generation and introduces new experimental designs to examine the relationship between health and the most preferred coping strategies of young people, which can enable a broader study of the issue of health protection through the development of conscious and rational behaviors, including in stressful situations. The paper presents an analysis of the concept of health from the interdisciplinary perspective. The focus is on the necessity of considering a single sociopsychological aspect of health, including its somatic, social, and personal levels. Stress affects human health and stress resistance helps maintain mental and physical health. Methods. The experimental study aimed to identify the characteristics of coping behaviors of young men and women with different health levels. The study sample comprised male and female students of Bunin Yelets State University (N = 540, mean age of 20 ± 2.3 years). The study used (a) the questionnaire to identify the level of health and (b) the Ways of Coping Questionnaire by R. Lazarus modified by T. L. Kryukova, E. V. Kuftyak, and M. S. Zamyshlyaeva. The statistical analysis of the results was carried out using descriptive statistics (frequency analysis, analysis of ingroup mean values and standard deviations), Pearson’s chi-square test, and non-parametric Mann-Whitney U test. Results. The results of the study indicated that young men and women with different health levels use different coping forms. Young women with health problems use productive coping more often than young men. The higher the level of health of young men, the more likely they are to use productive coping. Discussion. The study shows that the negative experiences of young women associated with the symptoms of chronic diseases enabled female respondents to adapt better to stressful situations associated with health losses. At the same time, health losses as stress factors affect the level of constructiveness in choosing models of behavior for young men and women.

The article discusses self-regulatory resources that can be used when working with clients of a psychological support service. The present study sought to examine the characteristics of self-regulatory resources in clients of an online psychological support service (Tomsk State University). The sample was collected using online measures from the clients who at that moment were solving their problems or had already solved them. To analyze self-regulatory resources we diagnosed the style of self-regulation, coping behavior, tolerance for uncertainty, basic assumptions of an individual and studied text messages from the clients. The correlation and cluster analysis revealed numerous correlations of self- regulation and other resources. It allowed us to identify groups of clients with dominant typological relationships between the self-regulatory features, strategies for coping with stress, ambiguity tolerance, and primary assumptions. We discussed the results, taking into account the current level of self-regulatory activity and personal resources.

The Covid-19 pandemic has had various impacts, one of which is stress. One of these things happened to the counselor. The purpose of this study is to describe how counselor’s stress coping strategies work in the new normal era. The research method used is descriptive qualitative method. In collecting data by way of observations and interviews which are then processed data. The results of this study are that there are two forms of stress coping strategies, namely emotional focused coping and problem focused coping. The stress coping strategy carried out by counselors in the new normal era is by using emotional focused coping. Actions taken include self-control, accepting responsibility and positive reapraisal. The purpose of the counselor is to do a coping stress to reduce anxiety and worry about the problems faced, especially after the pandemic and entering the new normal era of adaptation.

Almost one-third of all malignant melanoma patients exhibit emotional stress indicating the need for professional care. Considering this, patients’ psychological needs are routinely overlooked and unfulfilled, even though there is substantial evidence that psychological therapies may enhance psychosocial outcomes for melanoma patients, such as low mood, sadness, and anxiety. Among developing countries and some health systems in developed regions, the lack of awareness and screening methods for skin cancer creates a high risk of psychological issues associated with more advanced diseases. Therefore, the current study aimed to investigate and compare the impact of malignant melanoma awareness for screening, prevention, and treatment on the patient’s quality of life and coping with stress and depression, based on patients’ age. This cross-sectional study recruited 238 patients with malignant melanoma distributed into two groups, Group A patients between 18 and 65 years and Group B patients older than 65. There were no significant gender differences and cancer staging differences between groups, although self-reported depressed mood and anhedonia were significantly more frequent in younger adults with malignant melanoma (43.8% vs. 28.9%). From the unstandardized surveys, it was observed that significantly fewer patients from Group B knew that melanoma could be caused by sun exposure (34.2% vs. 52.2%), and they were less likely to use sunscreen or visit a doctor to evaluate their skin moles (25.9% vs. 14.5%). Elderly patients preferred television as the main source of information, and only 68.4% of patients from Group B were using smart devices. There was a significantly higher physical score on the SF-12 scale among Group A patients, although patients from Group B scored higher in the mental health assessment, and the perceived helplessness on the PSS-10 scale was significantly higher compared to younger adults with melanoma (2.97 vs. 2.71, p-value = 0.036). Lower scores on the physical and mental SF-12 questionnaire determined a higher presence of depressive symptoms (rho = −0.352, respectively rho = −0.273). Higher scores on the DLQI sexual difficulties and treatment difficulties also correlated significantly with the presence of depressive symptoms and anhedonia (rho = 0.341, respectively rho = 0.264). Awareness campaigns for malignant melanoma should focus on the elderly population, too, using the television as the main communication channel. On the other hand, the more informed and knowledgeable group of adults younger than 65 are more likely to experience psychological problems and should be targeted for psycho-oncological aid.

Aim: Women may experience emotions such as fear, anxiety, stress, anger or guilt after pregnancy loss, and it can lead to posttraumatic stress disorder if the women cannot cope with these emotions. Family relationships during leisure time in adolescence have the potential to promote positive development, particularly in terms of autonomy. However, the scientific literature that links specifically positive family leisure to the development of adolescent autonomy is scarce, and lower when analyzing the role of frustration in leisure time. Grounded in Self-Determination Theory (SDT) this article examines the potential relationship between positive frustration in family leisure time and the promotion of adolescent autonomy. For that purpose, the manuscript addresses four objectives to be discussed consecutively: (1) to delimit the concept of adolescent autonomy and point out the difficulty of parental support; (2) to explore positive frustration, a concept aligned with Csikszentmihalyi’s theory of flow, as a construct that can promote socio-emotional development in adolescence; (3) to describe the components of family leisure; and (4) to understand how the experience of optimal frustration may be linked to the development of adolescent autonomy during family leisure time. From this central question, several additional inquiries emerge: the interplay of frustration and failure in adolescence, the importance of parents and adolescents spending quality time together, the enjoyment in structured family leisure time, the autonomy-supportive parenting in leisure time activities in relation to daily activities, the need to strengthen adolescent bonds developed in infancy, and the complexity of paternal and maternal autonomy granting.

Introduction Health behaviors play an important role in preserving, maintaining and improving health. These are actions and behaviors selected by humans, which, based on specific knowledge, remain in a significant relationship with health. Nursing staff, due to their knowledge, skills and duties enshrined in the Act on the Professions of Nurses and Midwives, through their own model of behavior and actions, should encourage appropriate health attitudes. Aim of the study The aim of the study was to learn about selected health behaviors in the use of preventive programs, coping with stress and the impact of additional workload among the nursing staff employed at the Railway Hospital in Wilkowice. Material and methods: The research was carried out using the diagnostic survey method and a standardized scale - Juczyński's Health Behavior Inventory on a group of 100 nurses. Results: The group of surveyed nurses was characterized by the highest health behaviors in terms of positive mental attitude and proper eating habits, lower in terms of preventive behaviors and health practices. Only 63% of the respondents used prevention programmes. In addition, it was observed that abnormal health behaviors were more common among nurses working additionally in another health care facility. Conclusions: The surveyed nurses used preventive programs on average and manifested health practices at an average level, which was influenced by the burden of additional work. They chose various ways of coping with stress, which were not always pro-health, therefore postgraduate education should emphasize the development of these skills, and nurses should be able to use psychologists employed in hospitals.

Background: Parents of children suffering from congenital heart disease experience high levels of stress and negative emotions. Therefore, recognition of parents’ emotional states and their ways of coping with it is becoming more and more important. Methods: The study group consisted of 154 parents of newborns and infants with cyanotic congenital heart disease, before and after cardiac surgery (partial or full). To assess parental negative emotions, the level of stress, and strategies of coping with it, standardized questionnaires, such as HADS-M, PSS-10, and COPE, were used. Results: Stress levels in parents were high and associated with negative emotions (anxiety, depression, irritability), as well as the choice of non-constructive coping strategies, which was observed especially in younger parents. Conclusions: Assessing parents’ stress levels and ways of coping with stress can improve family functioning and provide better development conditions for the child.

Abstract: Introduction. The article raises the actual problem of instability and uncertainty in the modern world associated with the pandemic and the social restrictions that followed it. In particular, the influence of the levels of resilience components on the effectiveness of the behavior of representatives of helping professions in the era of VUCA has not been studied before. The experimental study aimed to analyze the hardiness characteristics of various population groups in a pandemic situation. Methods. The study used the original Maddy Hardiness Survey adapted by D. A. Leont'ev and E. I. Rasskazova. The experimental study was conducted in Yelets, Lipetsk region, and 360 people (girls and women) participated. The sample was made up of representatives of different social groups: students, teachers of educational organizations, social workers, and healthcare workers (an equal number from each group). Statistical analysis of the results was carried out using single-factor analysis of variance, Student’s t-test using the SPSS-21 software package. Results. The study results showed that most of the students and teachers who participated in the experiment have a high level of hardiness, while a third of the residents of these groups have a low level; medical workers are equally characterized by high and medium levels, and social workers demonstrated almost identical indicators of high and low levels. The data obtained allow us to conclude about more developed indicators of hardiness in medical workers. However, statistical analysis of the results shows that the level of resilience does not depend on the type of employment of the respondents. Discussion. Analysis of the degree of one or another component of the manifestation of hardiness in the respondents showed that “control” is dominant. It indicates that most respondents are convinced that the mobilization of internal forces will allow them to adapt to a situation of uncertainty and cope with stressful circumstances of life.

Background The purpose of the study was to search for variables that show a relationship with coping with stress as well as to search for the possibility of predicting a stress coping mechanism in the studied adolescents. Two questions were formulated in the study: Are mental resilience and communication with peers significant predictors of coping with stress in the studied group? To what extent will the analysed predictors explain individual strategies to cope with stress? Participants and procedure The study involved three tools: the Resilience Measurement Scale (RMS-18), the Coping Inventory for Stressful Situations Questionnaire (CISS), and the Scale of Communication of Adolescents with Peers (SCAP). The study was carried out on a randomly selected group of 546 adolescents. Due to the pandemic conditions prevailing at that time, the online form of data collection was used. Study tools along with the record were placed on the LimeSurvey platform, and then posted via Facebook on groups for adolescents, not only in secondary schools. Each subject could withdraw at any time without any negative consequences. The collected questionnaires are part of a larger empirical project. Results The study results showed that open communication with peers as well as general resilience and the resilience factor opti-mistic attitude and energy had a positive relationship. Conclusions The general conclusion from the study is that mental resilience and openness in peer relationships are conducive to under-taking strategies of coping with stress in the studied adolescents.

It is very important for nursing students to manage stress effectively, because of the stress caused by the individual problems and the negative consequences reflected in the interaction with the patient. This study analyzed whether the ‘coping with stress’ online course had any effect on the perceived stress levels and automatic thoughts of nursing students based on their behavioral patterns (A or B). This pretest-posttest quasi-experimental research was conducted with 90 students. Data were collected online, using a Personal Information Form, the type-A Personality Scale, the Perceived Stress Scale-10, and the Automatic Thoughts Questionnaire. Descriptive statistics and dependent samples t-test were used in the data analysis. Of the participants, 53.2% had type-A and 46.7% had type-B personalities. Background: Sexual dysfunction (SD) is a common complication among men living with diabetes (MLWD), which adds to stresses induced by medical condition. Effect of stress on their daily living activities has been only poorly described. Aim: This study aimed to explore the behaviour and challenges of MLWD experiencing SD in respect of daily living activities. Setting: Five clinics in Senwabarwana in Limpopo province. Methods: Qualitative approach and phenomenological exploratory design were adopted to collect data from 15 male participants selected from five clinics using purposive homogeneous sampling. One-on-one interviews were conducted using voice recorders, and field notes were taken of non-verbal cues. Unstructured interview guide with principal question enabled instructive probing to be conducted. Data were analysed using eight steps of Tesch’s inductive, descriptive and open coding technique. Results: Participants reported stressful experiences, difficulty coping with diabetes and its accompanying complication of SD that led to fear of losing their wives. They indicated that as a result of stress and difficulty in coping with the condition, they were engaged in less physical activity than before their diagnosis. Conclusion: Sexual dysfunction is prevalent among male diabetics and often feel stressed and worried about losing their wives. They struggle to cope with conditions to the point where they are less capable of performing tasks than they were before diagnosis. These outcomes are critical issues that should be addressed in any diabetes treatment strategy. Contribution: Support-based collaboration of healthcare providers with spouses and revision of South African diabetes management strategy to incorporate healthy coping strategies are recommended.

Smartphones are omnipresent in the daily lives of parents and provide access to multiple resources in stressful situations. Thus, smartphones might be valuable coping tools. Previous research has mostly focused on the negative effects of parental phone use. In the present study, we investigated how mothers use smartphones for coping with stress and whether their phone use for coping is effective. We also explored factors on different levels (situation, person, device) which could influence phone use and coping effectiveness. Building on a one-week experience sampling study with over 200 mothers and multilevel models, we found that in stressful situations while being with children, mothers used their smartphones mostly for emotion-focused coping such as self-distraction and taking a break. Problem-focused coping was less prevalent. Mothers reporting increased cognitive phone salience used it more for coping with stress. Phone use for coping compared to no use related to lower stress decrease. No person-, situation-, or device-specific factors moderated the effects of phone use on coping effectiveness. Using positive phone content, however, was associated with increased perceived coping efficacy. Our results suggest that phone use is not generally successful for coping, but that momentary device-specific factors such as content characteristics might determine whether phones can be used for coping in an effective way.

Aim: Declared as a pandemic by the World Health Organization on March 11, 2020, Covid-19 has raised significant psychological concerns and physical problems in humans. This study aimed to evaluate the relationship between the methods of coping with stress of the SUFVM students with socio-demographic characteristics, experiences during the Covid-19 pandemic process, and professional career concerns. Materials and Methods: The research sample consisted of 644 students from the 1st-5th grades who continued their education at SUFVM in the 2019-2020 academic year and agreed to participate in the research. The research was carried out by filling in the questionnaire form sent to the participants? mobile phones between 14-22 December 2020 voluntarily. The questionnaire consisted of four parts in total, which determined socio-demographic characteristics, professional career concerns, and experiences with Covid-19, and measuring the style of coping with stress. Results: It was determined that SUFVM students used the most ?self-confident approaches? (%27) and the least ?seeking social support? (%13) sub-factors among the strategies to cope with stress, female students had higher ?helpless approaches? scores (%22) than male students (%21), and fifth-grade students had ?helpless approaches? scores were lower than the other classes, and the third-grade students had higher ?submissive approaches? scores compared to other classes. Conclusion: It can be said that the coping strategies SUFVM students use are mostly problem-based active styles, and they use passive styles related to emotions less, also it is very important for them to develop skills to cope with stressful situations such as the Covid-19 pandemic.

Aim:This study aimed to investigate the stress experienced by emergency medicine physicians working in emergency departments during the coronavirus disease-2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, the factors they stated to be effective against stress, and their coping approaches to stressful situations.Materials and Methods:The study was designed in a general screening model, and 200 emergency medicine physicians participated via e-mail who work in emergency departments in Turkey. The sources of stress related to the pandemic, the factors that they find effective in combating stress, and their strategies to cope with stress were investigated with relation to their gender, marital status, after-shift accommodation, manner of working in a shift, smoking behavior, having a chronic disease, having children, and spouse’s job as a healthcare professional.Results:While the primary source of stress of emergency medicine physicians during the pandemic was the risk of transmitting the virus to their families, the most influential factor in combating stress was leisure activities. Emergency physicians’ approaches to coping with stress were significantly predicted by the variables of using full personal protective equipment while working, having an adequate sleep and resting opportunities, obtaining additional economic income, and not knowing the pandemic’s end date.Conclusion:Emergency medicine physicians used active problem-oriented approaches, and among these, they used the social support seeking approach the most during the pandemic. It is necessary to provide social support, take precautions to care for healthcare workers’ families and arrange emergency physicians’ shifts to allocate their time to their leisure activities appropriately to reduce stress.

The aim of this study was to determine the relationships between coping with stress, intolerance to uncertainty and automatic thoughts. The research sample consists of 393 (Male: 194, Female: 199) volunteer participants living in Central Anatolia. The research data were collected using the Stress Coping Styles Scale, Intolerance to Uncertainty Scale, Automatic Thoughts Scale and a personal information form developed by the researcher. Significant relationships were found between intolerance to uncertainty, automatic thoughts and sub-dimensions of coping with stress (self-confident, helpless style, optimistic, submissive, seeking social support). In the regression analysis, it was determined that coping with stress and automatic thoughts predicted intolerance to uncertainty. To protect mental health, based on the results of this study, trainings can be organized to teach positive stress coping mechanisms and to identify negative automatic thoughts that predict intolerance to uncertainty in individuals. Individuals who have problems with these issues can be included in psycho-educational group practices.

This study was conducted to determine post-traumatic stress symptoms and related factors in high school student adolescents living in a county in Southeast Anatolia. The study used a cross-sectional design. The population of the study consisted of 9522 students, and the sample included 459 students from 10 high schools. A Descriptive Information Form, Post-Traumatic Stress Diagnostic Scale, Beck Depression Scale, and Ways of Coping Questionnaire were used to collect the study data. The findings indicated that that 57.7% (n=202) of the participants were at the age of 15 or younger and that 64.2% (n=251) were female. According to the study, 87.2% (n=341) of the students had symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). There was a statistically significant difference between the students' depression symptoms and PTSD symptoms. A significant difference was found between students' ways of coping with stress and symptoms of PTSD only in terms of the helplessness approach style. It was determined that nine out of ten students experienced symptoms of PTSD, depression symptoms increased as the symptoms of PTSD increased, and that the students used the helplessness approach to cope with stress. These results are important in terms of planning preventive mental health services to be offered in the region.

Introduction. Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a chronic, autoimmune disease of the central nervous system, which affects young adults between 20–40 years old. The incidence of MS is increasing worldwide. The symptoms vary and depend on which part of the nervous system is affected. Stress is very common in patients with MS. It can be a risk factor related with relapses of the disease. Coping is defined as the behavioural and cognitive efforts used in an attempt to deal with stressful events. In a long-term treatment, disease modifying therapies are used to reduce the risk of the progression and severity of MS, and reduce the risk of disability. The adherence to therapy has a crucial role in the effectiveness of drugs. Aim. The aim of the study was to assess the correlation between coping strategies and quality of life in multiple sclerosis patients depending on the degree of adherence. Material and Methods. The study was conducted in 226 patients suffering from MS. Results. It was demonstrated that 23.5% of respondents do not follow recommended treatments. Both adherent and non-adherent patients gave the highest grade to their quality of life in its social and psychological aspects. The most often used strategies of coping with stress both in adherent and non-adherent patients were as follows: active coping, planning, positive reframing, acceptance, seeking emotional support and seeking instrumental support. On the other hand, substance use was the least frequently used strategy, irrespective of the adherence level. Conclusions. The use of the coping-with-stress strategy, associated with an active problem solving and seeking support, plays a positive role in the quality of life of MS patients adhering to therapeutic recommendations. The use of avoidance strategies, i.e. the not taking of actions as well as self-blaming, reduces the quality of life in MS patients, both adherers and non-adherers to recommendations. The aim of this article is to present cancer as a serious, life-threatening chronic disease that strongly impacts all aspects of a patient’s quality of life, including the physical, psychological, social, and spiritual ones. This theoretical article describes selected variables related to the quality of life of a cancer victim during the processes of diagnosis and treatment. These variables include stress and coping with the specific stress of having cancer, appraisal of the disease, acceptance of illness, and social support. Also discussed is the role of the variables listed above in quality of life in cancer and current research on these connections. Implications of the presented theory and research indicate that cancer affects quality of life in all areas and that the process of adaptation to the disease is facilitated by adopting adaptive coping strategies, appraising the disease as a challenge rather than as a threat or loss, accepting the inevitable limitations to everyday life, and seeking and using various sources of social support.

This study determines if academic self-efficacy and perceived social support are predictors for coping with stress in Peruvian university students. A cross-sectional research study of the predictive design was employed. The study participants included 455 Peruvian university students. The global academic self-efficacy questionnaire, perceived social support survey, and academic stress coping scale were employed for the analysis. Further, the collected data were analyzed using correlation coefficients and multiple linear regression models. The study results revealed a statistically significant relationship between coping with stress, academic self-efficacy, and perceived social support. Linear regression analyses reported a satisfactory fit for the model (F-test = 76.938, p < 0.001) wherein academic self-efficacy (β = 0.292, p < 0.05) and perceived social support (β = 0.360, p < 0.01) are variables that significantly predict stress-coping means used by the study participants (adjusted R2 = 0.25). Hence, it is evident that academic self-efficacy and perceived social support are predictors for coping with stress in Peruvian university students.

Introduction Workplace conditions have a documented effect on employee health including sleep. Occupational stress and burnout are more frequent among penitentiary personnel than the general population. Objectives The aim of the current study was to examine the phenomenon of insomnia and its relationship with occupational burnout in a sample of Polish prison officers. Methods The study was carried out on a sample of Polish prison officers using the Athens Insomnia Scale (AIS), the Coping Orientation to Problems Experienced (COPE), and the Oldenburg Burnout Inventory (OLBI). Results showed that the Polish prison officers exhibited early symptoms of insomnia. Sleep disorders had a significant role in developing occupational burnout. Coping strategies such as help-seeking and engagement were revealed to have a mediating role in the relationship between insomnia and occupational burnout dimensions. The coping strategy of help-seeking was the only predictor of insomnia. Conclusions The results can constitute a significant argument for health promotion campaigns highlighting sleep hygiene directed at penitentiary personnel. A research model created for the purposes of future studies would allow for measuring the frequency of health behaviors, including the general category of preventive behaviors. Amaç: Bu çalışma, infertilite tedavisi gören hastalara verilen eğitimin stres ve stresle başa çıkmalarına etkisi incelemek amacıyla yarı deneysel olarak planlanmış ve uygulanmıştır. Gereç ve Yöntem: Çalışma yarı deneysel niteliktedir. İstanbul ilinde bir vakıf hastanesine IVF tedavisi için başvuran bireylerle, Mayıs 2017- Ocak 2018 tarihleri arasında gerçekleştirildi. Örneklemi 40 infertil birey oluşturdu. Veriler araştırmacı tarafından yüz yüze görüşme yöntemiyle toplandı. Ön test uygulandıktan sonra eğitim verildi. Eğitimden bir ay sonra son test uygulandı. Bulgular: İnfertil kadınların ortaokul mezunlarının verilen eğitim öncesi stresi ölçeği puanın daha yüksek olduğu, eğitim sonrası bu farkın ortadan kalktığı, infertilite nedenine göre infertilite stresi ile başa çıkma ölçeği alt boyutu puan ortalamaları arasında istatistiksel olarak anlamlı fark olduğu, kadınların İnfertilite Stresi ile Başa Çıkma Ölçeği alt boyutlarından aktif yok sayma, aktif mücadele etme ve pasif yok sayma başa çıkma yöntemlerinin kullanımı arttıkça İnfertilite Stresi Ölçeği alt boyut stresi arttığı tesbit edildi. Sonuç: Bu çalışmada infertilite ve stres araşındaki ilişki araştırmış olup, tedavi süreci ve sonuçların hastalarda önemli bir stres kaynağı olduğu sonucuna varılmıştır. Elde edilen sonuçlara göre infertilite tedavisi için hastaneye başvuran hastaların stres düzeyi ve stresle başa çıkma yöntemlerinin belirlenmesi, bu konuda eğitim ve danışmanlık verilmesi önerilmektedir.

Pozitif psikoloji akımı doğrultusunda ortaya çıkan pozitif psikolojik sermaye kavramı, bireylerin olumsuz özellikleri yerine olumlu yönlerini ve özelliklerini vurgulamayı amaçlayan bir bakış açısını ifade eder. Bu çalışmanın temel amacı, Denizli Kınıklı bölgesindeki devlet okullarında görevli 175 lise öğretmeni üzerinde pozitif psikolojik sermaye ile stresle başa çıkma yolları arasındaki ilişkiyi incelemektir. Verilerin analizinde SPSS 22 istatistik paket programı kullanılmıştır. Katılımcılara ilişkin verilerin analizinde frekans dağılımlarından yararlanılmıştır. Bununla birlikte demografik değişkenler ile pozitif psikolojik sermaye ve stresle başa çıkma yolları arasındaki ilişkiyi incelemek için Mann Whitney U, Kruskal Wallis testleri ve korelasyon analizlerinden yararlanılmıştır. Değerlendirmeler ışığında elde edilen verilere göre; pozitif psikolojik sermaye ile stresle başa çıkma yolları arasında pozitif yönde anlamlı bir ilişki olduğu sonucuna ulaşılmıştır.

Background The results of numerous studies indicate that the nurse profession is burdened with an increased risk of feeling stressed and experiencing professional burnout. Effective coping with stress can protect against professional burnout as well as impact on patient care. These effects may be influenced, e.g., by personality traits. By the study, the authors decided to check whether personality traits such as empathy, impulsiveness and venturesomeness would play a predictive role for flexibility in coping with stress. Material and Methods By the study, the authors analyzed the results obtained from 137 nurses. The following research tools were used: the Impulsiveness-Venturesomeness-Empathy Questionnaire by Eysenck and Eysenck, in the Polish adaptation by Aleksandra Jaworowska, and the Flexibility in Coping with Stress Questionnaire (FCSQ-14) by Małgorzata Basińska et al. Both tools were characterized by satisfactory statistical properties. By addition, the respondents completed a personal survey which allowed collecting basic personal data. Results Venturesomeness positively correlated with flexibility in coping with stress and all its dimensions (strategy repertoire, strategy variability and reflexivity) at the low level. Similar dependencies for empathy and impulsiveness were not shown. Similarly, in assessing the predictive role of selected personality traits for flexibility in coping with stress, only venturesomeness turned out to be an important predictor. Although the model turned out to be statistically significant, it allowed explaining the variability of flexibility only in 7%. Conclusions There was a low statistically significant relationship between the nurses’ venturesomeness and their flexibility in coping with stress. Children with disabilities often experience physical violence committed by caregivers. This study aims to identify the relationship between stress in caring for physical violence committed against children with disabilities. The study used a cross-sectional design to examine 76 parents with children with disabilities selected by convenience sampling techniques. Of the 76 participants, 35 (46.1%) parents physically abused children with disabilities. The most common type of violence is hitting (74.3%). Parenting stress may be felt by parents because there is a relationship between caregiving stress with physical violence (Z= -2.85; p-value= 0.004). Lack of access to information related to adaptive care makes parents in Indonesia still consider physical violence, such as hitting children, is a natural thing. The research concludes that there is a relationship between parental stress and physical violence against children with disabilities. Health workers are expected to be able to teach parents how to improve coping mechanisms to reduce parenting stress so that parenting behavior becomes adaptive. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengidentifikasi hubungan antara stres dalam pengasuhan dengan kekerasan fisik yang dilakukan terhadap anakdifabel. Penelitian menggunakan desain cross-sectional untuk meneliti 76 orang tua dengan anak difabel yang dipilih dengan teknik convenience sampling. Dari 76 partisipan, 35 (46,1%) orang tua melakukan kekerasan fisik terhadap anak difabel. Jenis kekerasan yang paling banyak dilakukan adalah memukul (74,3%). Stres pengasuhan mungkin dirasakan oleh orang tua karena terdapat hubungan antara stres pengasuhan dengan kekerasan fisik (Z=-2,85; p-value = 0.004). Kurangnya akses informasi terkait pengasuhan yang adaptif menyebabkan orang tua di Indonesia masih menganggap kekerasan fisik seperti memukul anak merupakan hal yang wajar. Abstract Background People who experienced a mental crisis are involved in providing care for others who face psychiatric hospitalization. The idea of peer workforce has been developed mostly in American and European behavioral health systems. Similar program is implemented to Polish mental health care. The purpose of the study was to find out if candidates for peer support workers with different levels of subjective well-being differed also in terms of general self-efficacy and in the ways of coping with stress. Methods As the problem has not been studied before exploratory study was conducted. The study covered a group of 72 subjects, 46 women and 26 men, aged 21–62 years (M = 41.43; SD = 10.37), former psychiatric patients, preparing for a peer worker role. We used the following questionnaires: Ryff’s Psychological Well-Being (PWB) Scales, in the Polish adaptation by Krok, the General Self-Efficacy Scale (GSES) by Schwarzer and Jerusalem, in adaptation by Schwarzer, Jerusalem and Juczyński and Brief-COPE by Carver, in adaptation by Juczyński and Ogińska-Bulik. Results The results of cluster analysis pointed to the existence of two groups of individuals with significantly different levels of subjective well-being. Then MANOVA was used. It was determined that individuals with a higher level of well-being were characterized by a higher level of self-efficacy, a higher tendency to use positive reframing strategy and propensity towards active behavior when coping with stress, as well as by a lower propensity towards self-blaming and behavioral disengagement. Conclusions The study demonstrates that further empirical explorations are justified. The results also encourage a search for some more possible conditions of well-being. It would be advisable to train candidates for mental health peer workers by focusing on the strengthening of their subjective well being and developing active forms of coping with stress.

Objective: The present study was conducted to assess the anxiety levels and the methods of coping with the stress of adolescents who underwent their first gynecological examination. Methods: The sample of this descriptive study consisted of 223 married or single adolescent women who went to a state hospital in Sivas Province in Turkey for their first gynecological examination. The data were collected by face-to-face interviews with the Personal Information Form, the State Anxiety Inventory (SAI) and the Ways of Coping Inventory (WCI). Results: There was a statistically significant negative correlation between the SAI scores, and the self-confident approach (r = −0.305; p = 0.001) and optimistic approach (r = −0.170; p = 0.011) of the WCI subscales. A statistically significant positive correlation was found between SAI scores, and the desperate approach (r = 0.153; p = 0.022) and submissive approach (r = 0.143; p = 0.032). Conclusion: Adolescent women who underwent their first gynecological examination have “moderate” levels of anxiety and their coping with stress styles are ineffective. As anxiety levels increase, they use more ineffective methods.

Recently, we have faced the outbreak of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) in the world, which has attracted the attention of all people. Stress has become a word familiar to all people. The stressors of life are relatively clear and some of them cannot be eliminated by humans. One of the stressors in the life of humans is the COVID-19 pandemic. Doctors believe that the virus is controllable but its prevalence is quicker and deadlier than other viruses. In addition, the virus puts the elderly and those with underlying diseases (e.g. pulmonary problems) at extreme risk. Therefore, more care is seriously required to protect members of society. However, this psychological imbalance caused by the virus is associated with stress and anxiety. Lack of proper management of this stress will be associated with emotional impacts (e.g. depression and anxiety), physiological impacts (e.g. gastrointestinal disorders and increased heart rate), cognitive impacts (e.g. reduced concentration and distraction) and behavioural impact (e.g. increased work and activity avoidance, and sleep disorders). Contribution: Given the importance of this topic, this study aimed to evaluate the relationship between religious beliefs and coping with COVID-19-related stress amongst Muslim students in three cities of Russia – Ingushetia, Chechnya and the Republic of Dagestan – in 2020. Data were collected using questionnaires, the validity and reliability of which were previously confirmed. According to the results, religious beliefs had an impact on stress coping by p = 0.657. In other words, students’ ability to cope with stress improved by 0.657 units, with each unit of enhancement in their religious beliefs.

Introduction and purpose of the work: In Lazarus and Folkman's transactional theory of stress and coping, stress is treated as a relationship between an individual and environment, which is perceived by a person as excessively demanding. It may lead to a loss of sense of well-being if it exceeds the resources available to the individual. One important personal resource for athletes is the hope for success. The aim of the study was to verify the relations between the style of coping with stress and hope for success among students of sports championship schools. Materials and method: The participants of the study were 51 students who do sports aged 16 to 20 years, including 30 women (59%). The mean age was 17.8 years and the standard deviation was 1.16. In this study, the Coping Inventory for Stresfull Situations (CISS) by Endler and Parker in the polish adaptation of Szczepaniak, Strelau and Wrześniewski and the Adult Hope Scale by Snyder in the polish adaptation of Łaguna, Trzebiński and Zięba were used. Results: The research revealed a significant positive correlation between task-oriented coping and the level of hope for success. Gender considerations revealed significant positive correlations between all styles of coping with stress and the level of hope for success in a group of girls, and this also correlated with task-oriented coping style in a group of boys. Conclusions: The obtained results do not allow to form any final conclusions, but they are an important contribution to improving the knowledge of the relations between styles of coping with stress and hope for success, especially among young athletes. An evaluation of the styles of coping with stress may be of great importance for researches and practitioners working with players.

Aim: Assessment of the sense of coherence, methods of coping with stress and the relationship between their components among people after orthopedic surgery. Materials and methods: 100 people were examined. The proper group consists of 50 patients after orthopedic surgery. The control group consists of 50 healthy people. All the subjects completed a questionnaire with questions about basic metrical data and two standardized questionnaires: SOC-29 and Mini-COPE. The results underwent statistical analysis. Results: Both groups did not differ in the level of the sense of coherence, the distribution was notably similar to normal (p > 0,05). However, the differences in the strategies of coping with stress were observed. Differences in correlations between individual coherence components and remediation strategies have also been noticed. Conclusions: The patients were characterized by a greater intensity of non-constructive coping strategies compared to the control group. Only among them the stronger sense of coherence coexisted with lower inclinations to negative patterns of behavior. Higher global life orientation was associated with a more favorable and positive approach to problems among healthy people.

Most data related to cutaneous melanoma survivors’ health behaviour comes from epidemiological studies and is predominantly concerned with safe-sun behaviour and self-examination. Data regarding other changes of health behaviour are scarce and so are qualitative studies in this realm. The aim of our research is to acquire insight into the experiences of patients with cutaneous melanoma in Slovenia. How did they react to the diagnosis, which changes did they introduce in their health behaviour and how do they assess the role of family doctors?

This article discusses the apparent lack of a well-functioning combat mindset evident in the Norwegian Police Force during the terrorist attacks in Norway on July 22, 2011. We describe what a well-functioning combat mindset is and then continue to discuss challenges linked to the current mindset in the Norwegian Police Force. We then elaborate upon how the experience of an acute stress reaction may affect one’s ability to solve a mission. Then we describe how to cope with stress and the importance of a well-functioning combat mindset, and we then discuss techniques in order to build a well-functioning combat mindset. Furthermore, we describe how coping with an extreme cognitive load and a well-functioning combat mindset are related. Finally, we suggest a method for practicing combat mindset (CM-training). The combat mindset training needs to include both realistic training and systematic reflection in order to a better ability to deal with sudden and unforeseen events.

Background. Mental skills are defined as a set of trainable mental abilities and methods that are held to underpin successful learning and performance. Objectives. The aim of the present research was to study and compare the mental skills of adolescent elite and competitive volleyball and soccer players. Methods. The sample consisted of 100 players (54 elite soccer, 13 elite volleyball, 18 competitive soccer and 15 competitive volleyball) selected via a purposive sampling method. Data were collected using the Ottawa Mental Skills Assessment Tool-2 (OMSAT-2). Results. Elite and competitive volleyball players had higher scores for stress reactions than elite soccer players. In addition, elite soccer players had more self-confidence than competitive soccer and volleyball players. Also, competitive volleyball players had higher levels of fear than elite soccer players. There were no other significant differences in mental skills between soccer and volleyball players. Conclusion. It seems that adolescent volleyball players stand in more immediate need of learning strategies for coping with stress, fear and self-confidence management than soccer players. Results are discussed in terms of an athlete’s levels, the nature and characteristics of the sport and choking during performance.

There is no doubt that stress is bonded with daily routine of students. Medical colleges are one of these environments, which are associated with negative impact of stress on many fields of life like physical health, academic feedback and physiological mood of student`s. Aim of study is to analyse the incidence of stress among students from different fields of study in Medical Universities in Poland. In that case we perform anonymous questionnaire, which contained 23 original questions and was widespreaded via Internet. Stress is a common problem among students from medical faculties. There is no doubt that stress is an inseparable companion during not only studies, but also after degree while working as a professional. For that reason it is necessary to encourage young people to find their own effective manner to cope with stress.

The article deals with coping and self-regulation of behavior in patients with schizophrenia and affective disorders. The study revealed that the highest level of self-regulation of behavior in patients from both groups noted selection, mainly, adaptive coping, and the ways of coping do not depend on subjective perceived psychopathology. Patients with schizophrenia different tendency to seek social support and optimistic outlook for the future. Patients with mood disorders tend to ignore problems and emotional discharge.

Introduction: Pregnancy is a period of important biological and psychosocial changes and a period that carries high risk of experiencing anxiety and stress. It is important to reduce the depression and stress that is experienced in this period or to reduce the severity of the stress and to increase the stress coping power of the pregnant women. The research was conducted to examine the effect of stress management training on pregnant women’s depression, stress and methods for coping with stress. Methods: Randomised controlled study of 202 pregnant women (experimental group: 103; control group: 99). The experimental group received stress management training and standard care; the control group received standard care. Data were collected using a Personal Information Form, the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI), Perceived Stress Scale (PSS) and ways of coping inventory (WCI). The purpose of this project was to determine the relationships between the sense of coherence and paramedics’ coping with stress styles. Owning such resources as high sense of coherence or task-oriented coping with stress style does not imply triggering them in encountering a critical situation. However, if triggered, they become an important variable acting as an intermediary between stressful events and coping. Two concepts serve as a theoretical basis: R. Lazarus’ transactional theory of stress and Antonovsky’s salutogenic theory.

Some studies suggest that religious people cope better with stress. For married couples, if partners perceive their relationship as sacred, supportive dyadic coping mediates the association of sanctification with marital satisfaction and well-being. In the current study, applying the actor–partner interdependence model to 116 Polish couples (n = 232), aged between 21 and 64 (males: M = 37.8, SD = 11.8; females M = 37.1, SD = 12.0), we examined the link between centrality of religiosity and dyadic coping. Although general dyadic analyses indicate that centrality of religiosity and dyadic coping are unrelated concepts, at the subscales level, we could observe few significant relationships. The results show that Polish religious men rate their common dyadic coping low. Actor effects in women are moderated by the type of relationship (cohabitation and civil marriage vs. catholic marriage).

Buaraştırmanın amacı, üniversite öğrencilerinin kendini toparlama güçlerinin vestresle başa çıkma stratejilerinin onların mutluluk düzeylerinin anlamlı bireryordayıcısı olup olmadığını belirlemektir. Veriler SPSS 23 programında analiz edilmiştir ve verianalizinde Pearson momentler çarpımı korelasyon katsayısı,çoklu doğrusal regresyon analizi ve bağımsız grup t testi tekniklerindenyararlanılmıştır. Araştırmanın bulgularına bakıldığında; Öğrencilerin mutlulukdüzeyleri ile stresle başa çıkma stratejileri arasında pozitif yönde ortadüzeyde anlamlı bir ilişki bulunmuştur. Yine öğrencilerin mutluluk düzeyleriile kendini toparlama gücü arasında pozitif yönde orta düzeyde anlamlı birilişki bulunmuştur. Mutluluk düzeyleri cinsiyete göre incelendiğinde; mutluluk cinsiyete göre anlamlı birfarklılık göstermemektedir. Son olarak kendini toparlama gücününve stresle başa çıkma stratejilerinin, öğrencilerin mutluluk düzeylerinianlamlı bir şekilde yordadığı, kendini toparlama gücü ve stresle başa çıkmastratejilerinin modele anlamlı bir katkısı olduğu sonucunaulaşılmıştır. Çalışmanın bulgularına bakıldığında öğrencilerinstresle başa çıkma stratejileri ne kadar yüksek ise mutluluk düzeylerininde o kadar arttığı görülmüştür. Mutluluk düzeyleri ile pozitif bir ilişkigösteren değişken ise kendini toparlama gücüdür.

With the ever-rising level of sports, one of the fundamental tasks of theoreticians and practitioners of the sport is the correct diagnosis of sports predispositions of players. Nowadays, sporting success is not determined only by an excellent physical preparation. Players should have corresponding psychological predispositions. One of the psychological aspects relevant to athletes are effective ways of coping with stress. The study attempts to determine the level of how to deal with stress in the representatives of team sports compared with the general population. A survey on ways of coping with stress of 31 players in the younger junior age category appearing in the top division was carried out using a CISS questionnaire created by Norman and Parker (1990), adapted by Polish authors (Strelau et al. 2005). The results showed that young athletes were characterized by a lower level of styles and strategies focused on emotions compared with those of the general population and a higher level of ways of focusing on the task compared with the general population. The observed differences were statistically significant.

It may lead to a loss of sense of well-being if it exceeds the resources available to the individual. One important personal resource for athletes is the hope for success. The aim of the study was to verify the relations between the style of coping with stress and hope for success among students of sports championship schools. Materials and method: The participants of the study were 51 students who do sports aged 16 to 20 years, including 30 women (59%). The mean age was 17.8 years and the standard deviation was 1.16. In this study, the Coping Inventory for Stresfull Situations (CISS) by Endler and Parker in the polish adaptation of Szczepaniak, Strelau and Wrześniewski and the Adult Hope Scale by Snyder in the polish adaptation of Łaguna, Trzebiński and Zięba were used. Results: The research revealed a significant positive correlation between task-oriented coping and the level of hope for success. Gender considerations revealed significant positive correlations between all styles of coping with stress and the level of hope for success in a group of girls, and this also correlated with task-oriented coping style in a group of boys. Conclusions: The obtained results do not allow to form any final conclusions, but they are an important contribution to improving the knowledge of the relations between styles of coping with stress and hope for success, especially among young athletes. An evaluation of the styles of coping with stress may be of great importance for researches and practitioners working with players.

Aim: Assessment of the sense of coherence, methods of coping with stress and the relationship between their components among people after orthopedic surgery. Materials and methods: 100 people were examined. The proper group consists of 50 patients after orthopedic surgery. The control group consists of 50 healthy people. All the subjects completed a questionnaire with questions about basic metrical data and two standardized questionnaires: SOC-29 and Mini-COPE. The results underwent statistical analysis. Results: Both groups did not differ in the level of the sense of coherence, the distribution was notably similar to normal (p > 0,05). However, the differences in the strategies of coping with stress were observed. Differences in correlations between individual coherence components and remediation strategies have also been noticed. Conclusions: The patients were characterized by a greater intensity of non-constructive coping strategies compared to the control group. Only among them the stronger sense of coherence coexisted with lower inclinations to negative patterns of behavior. Higher global life orientation was associated with a more favorable and positive approach to problems among healthy people.
