We report the discovery of Cerberus, an extremely red object detected with the MIRI Deep Imaging Survey (MIDIS) observations in the F1000W filter of the Hubble Ultra Deep Field. The object is detected at signal-to-noise ratio (S/N) ∼ 6, with F1000W ∼ 27 mag, and undetected in the NIRCam data gathered by the JWST Advanced Deep Extragalactic Survey (JADES), fainter than the 30.0–30.5 mag 5 σ detection limits in individual bands, as well as in the MIDIS F560W ultradeep data (∼29 mag, 5 σ ). We present deep James Webb Space Telescope (JWST)/Mid-Infrared Instrument (MIRI) F560W observations of a flux-limited, Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA)-selected sample of 28 galaxies at z = 0.5–3.7 in the Hubble Ultra Deep Field (HUDF). The data from the MIRI Deep Imaging Survey (MIDIS) reveal the stellar structure of the HUDF galaxies at rest-frame wavelengths of λ > 1 μ m for the first time. We revise the stellar mass estimates using new JWST photometry and find good agreement with pre-JWST analyses; the few discrepancies can be explained by blending issues in the earlier lower-resolution Spitzer data. At z ∼ 2.5, the resolved rest-frame near-infrared (1.6 μ m) structure of the galaxies is significantly more smooth and centrally concentrated than seen by the Hubble Space Telescope at rest-frame 450 nm (F160W), with effective radii of R _e (F560W) = 1–5 kpc and Sérsic indices mostly close to an exponential (disk-like) profile ( n ≈ 1), up to n ≈ 5 (excluding active galactic nuclei). We find an average size ratio of R _e (F560W)/ R _e (F160W) ≈ 0.7 that decreases with stellar mass. The stellar structure of the ALMA-selected galaxies is indistinguishable from a HUDF reference sample of all galaxies with a MIRI flux density greater than 1 μ Jy. We supplement our analysis with custom-made, position-dependent, empirical point-spread function models for the F560W observations. The results imply that a smoother stellar structure is in place in massive gas-rich, star-forming galaxies at “Cosmic Noon,” despite a more clumpy rest-frame optical appearance, placing additional constraints on galaxy formation simulations. As a next step, matched-resolution, resolved ALMA observations will be crucial to further link the mass- and light-weighted galaxy structures to the dusty interstellar medium.

Observations with the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) have uncovered numerous faint active galactic nuclei (AGN) at z ∼ 5 and beyond. These objects are key to our understanding of the formation of supermassive black holes (SMBHs), their coevolution with host galaxies, as well as the role of AGN in cosmic reionization. Using photometric colors and size measurements, we perform a search for compact red objects in an array of blank deep JWST/NIRCam fields totaling ∼640 arcmin ^2 . Our careful selection yields 260 reddened AGN candidates at 4 < z _phot < 9, dominated by a point-source-like central component (〈 r _eff 〉 < 130 pc) and displaying a dichotomy in their rest-frame colors (blue UV and red optical slopes). Quasar model fitting reveals our objects to be moderately dust-extincted ( A _V ∼ 1.6), which is reflected in their inferred bolometric luminosities of L _bol = 10 ^44–47 erg s ^−1 and fainter UV magnitudes M _UV ≃ −17 to −22. Thanks to the large areas explored, we extend the existing dusty AGN luminosity functions to both fainter and brighter magnitudes, estimating their number densities to be ×100 higher than for UV-selected quasars of similar magnitudes. At the same time, they constitute only a small fraction of all UV-selected galaxies at similar redshifts, but this percentage rises to ∼10% for M _UV ∼ − 22 at z ∼ 7. Finally, assuming a conservative case of accretion at the Eddington rate, we place a lower limit on the SMBH mass function at z ∼ 5, finding it to be consistent with both theory and previous JWST observations.

We study the stellar population properties of 182 spectroscopically confirmed (MUSE/VLT) Ly α emitters (LAEs) and 450 photometrically selected Lyman-break galaxies (LBGs) at z = 2.8–6.7 in the Hubble Extreme Deep Field. Leveraging the combined power of Hubble Space Telescope and JWST NIRCam and MIRI observations, we analyze their rest-frame UV-through-near-IR spectral energy distributions, with MIRI playing a crucial role in robustly assessing the LAEs’ stellar masses and ages. Our LAEs are low-mass objects $({{\rm{log}}}_{10}({M}_{\star }/{M}_{\odot })\simeq 7.5)$ with little or no dust extinction ( E ( B − V ) ≃ 0.1) and a blue UV continuum slope ( β ≃ −2.2). We analyze a sample of 3300 galaxies between redshifts z ≃ 3.5 and z ≃ 8.5 selected from James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) images in the Hubble Ultra Deep Field and UKIDSS Ultra Deep Survey field, including objects with stellar masses as low as ≃10 ^8 M _⊙ up to z ≃ 8. The depth and wavelength coverage of the JWST data allows us, for the first time, to derive robust stellar masses for such high- z , low stellar mass galaxies on an individual basis. We compute the galaxy stellar mass function, after complementing our sample with ancillary data from CANDELS to constrain the GMSF at high stellar masses ( ${ \mathcal M }\gt {M}^{* }$ ). Our results show a steepening of the low stellar mass end slope ( α ) with redshift, with α = −1.61 ± 0.05 at z ≃ 4 and α = −1.98 ± 0.14 at z ≃ 7. We also observe an evolution of the normalization ϕ ^* from z ≃ 7 to z ≃ 4, with ${\phi }_{z\simeq 4}^{* }/{\phi }_{z\simeq 7}^{* }={130}_{-50}^{+210}$ . Our study incorporates a novel method for the estimation of the Eddington bias, which takes into account its possible dependence both on stellar mass and redshift, while allowing for skewness in the error distribution. We finally compute the resulting cosmic stellar mass density and find a flatter evolution with redshift than previous studies.

We present the ultraviolet luminosity function and an estimate of the cosmic star formation rate density at 8 < z < 13 derived from deep NIRCam observations taken in parallel with the MIRI Deep Survey of the Hubble Ultra Deep Field (HUDF), NIRCam covering the parallel field 2. Our deep (40 hr) NIRCam observations reach an F277W magnitude of 30.8 (5 σ ), more than 2 mag deeper than JWST public data sets already analyzed to find high-redshift galaxies. We select a sample of 44 z > 8 galaxy candidates based on their dropout nature in the F115W and/or F150W filters, a high probability for their photometric redshifts, estimated with three different codes, being at z > 8, good fits based on χ ^2 calculations, and predominant solutions compared to z < 8 alternatives. We find mild evolution in the luminosity function from z ∼ 13 to z ∼ 8, i.e., only a small increase in the average number density of ∼0.2 dex, while the faint-end slope and absolute magnitude of the knee remain approximately constant, with values α = − 2.2 ± 0.1, and M ^* = − 20.8 ± 0.2 mag. Comparing our results with the predictions of state-of-the-art galaxy evolution models, we find two main results: (1) a slower increase with time in the cosmic star formation rate density compared to a steeper rise predicted by models; (2) nearly a factor of 10 higher star formation activity concentrated in scales around 2 kpc in galaxies with stellar masses ∼10 ^8 M _⊙ during the first 350 Myr of the universe, z ∼ 12, with models matching better the luminosity density observational estimations ∼150 Myr later, by z ∼ 9.

Using the novel James Webb Space Telescope (JWST)/NIRCam observations in the A2744 field, we present a first spatially resolved overview of a Hubble Space Telescope (HST)-dark galaxy, spectroscopically confirmed at z = 2.58 with magnification μ ≈ 1.9. While being largely invisible at ∼1 μ m with NIRCam, except for sparse clumpy substructures, the object is well detected and resolved in the long-wavelength bands with a spiral shape clearly visible in F277W. By combining ancillary Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) and Herschel data, we infer that this object is an edge-on dusty spiral with an intrinsic stellar mass log ( M _* / M _⊙ ) ∼ 11.3 and a dust-obscured star formation rate ∼300 M _⊙ yr ^−1 . A massive quiescent galaxy (log ( M _* / M _⊙ ) ∼ 10.8) with tidal features lies 2.″0 away ( r ∼ 9 kpc), at a consistent redshift as inferred by JWST photometry, indicating a potential major merger. The dusty spiral lies on the main sequence of star formation, and shows high dust attenuation in the optical (3 < A _V < 4.5). In the far-infrared, its integrated dust spectral energy distribution is optically thick up to λ _0 ∼ 500 μ m, further supporting the extremely dusty nature. Spatially resolved analysis of the HST-dark galaxy reveals a largely uniform A _V ∼ 4 area spanning ∼57 kpc ^2 , which spatially matches to the ALMA 1 mm continuum emission. Accounting for the surface brightness dimming and the depths of current JWST surveys, unlensed analogs of the HST-dark galaxy at z > 4 would be only detectable in F356W and F444W in an UNCOVER-like survey, and become totally JWST-dark at z ∼ 6. This suggests that detecting highly attenuated galaxies in the Epoch of Reionization might be a challenging task for JWST.
