Abstract Increased selenium (Se) content in fruits can supply Se in human body, but the effects of teas on the Se uptake in fruit trees are unknown. The effects of infusions of four teas (green, black, dark, and white) on the Se uptake of grapevine were studied to promote the Se uptake in fruit trees in this study. However, only black tea infusion increased the biomass, photosynthetic pigment content, superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity, peroxidase (POD) activity, and soluble protein content of grapevine. Except for white tea infusion, other tea infusions also increased the catalase (CAT) activity of grapevine. Furthermore, the tea infusions increased the activities of adenosine triphosphate sulfurase (ATPS) and adenosine 5’-phosphosulfate reductase (APR), and decreased the activities of serine acetyltransferase (SAT) and selenocysteine methyltransferase (SMT). Only the dark and white tea infusions increased the shoot total Se content by 86.53% and 23.32%, respectively (compared with the control), and also increased the shoot inorganic Se content and shoot organic Se content. Notably, four tea infusions decreased the organic Se proportion and increased the inorganic Se proportion in grapevine. Correlation and grey relational analyses showed that the root total Se content, ATPS activity, and ARP activity were closely associated with the shoot total Se content. The principal component and cluster analyses also showed that the ATPS activity, APR activity, root total Se content, and shoot total Se content were classified into one category. These findings show that black tea infusion can promote grapevine growth, while dark and white tea infusions can promote the Se uptake in grapevine.

Abstract Birds time their life cycle events to favourable windows in environmental conditions. In tropical environments, where photoperiod variation is small, birds show high variability in the timing of life cycle stages, yet these species have been severely underrepresented in phenology research. Here, we investigated temporal patterns in bird life cycles and resource availability in two sites in tropical Africa: Weppa (Nigeria, 7° N) and Elat (Cameroon, 3° N). In these sites we captured common bulbuls (Pycnonotus barbatus), a widespread generalist, and recorded breeding and moult over a 12‐month period. Simultaneously, we surveyed fruiting tree and arthropod abundance. Our aim was to quantify seasonal patterns in moult and breeding in bulbuls at both sites, and link them to fluctuations in local fruit and arthropod abundance and precipitation. Moult was more seasonal than breeding in both sites, and seasonality of both life cycle events was stronger in Nigeria than Cameroon. The peak timing for moult was 1.5 months earlier in Nigeria than Cameroon. Seasonal variation in abundance of fruiting trees and arthropods was different between sites, as were the associations with breeding and moulting. In Nigeria, we found a positive association between moult and arthropod abundance, and a negative one with fruiting tree abundance. In contrast, in Cameroon moult was associated with higher precipitation, while breeding occurred at times with higher fruit abundance. Our results provide evidence that, even in similar habitats separated by four degrees in latitude, seasonal patterns across three trophic levels are variable. Understanding links between environmental conditions and life cycle events can reveal potential vulnerabilities of tropical species, and guide conservation efforts.

Agroforestry is often seen as a sustainable land-use system for agricultural production providing ecosystem services. Intercropping with food crops leads to equal or higher productivity than monoculture and results in food production for industry and subsistence. Low rubber price and low labor productivity in smallholdings have led to a dramatic conversion of rubber plantations to more profitable crops. The literature analysis performed in this paper aimed at better understanding the ins and outs that could make rubber-based agroforestry more attractive for farmers. A comprehensive search of references was conducted in March 2023 using several international databases and search engines. A Zotero library was set up consisting of 415 scientific references. Each reference was carefully read and tagged in several categories: cropping system, country, main tree species, intercrop type, intercrop product, level of product use, discipline of the study, research topic, and intercrop species. Of the 232 journal articles, 141 studies were carried out on rubber agroforestry. Since 2011, the number of studies per year has increased. Studies on rubber-based agroforestry systems are performed in most rubber-producing countries, in particular in Indonesia, Thailand, China, and Brazil. These studies focus more or less equally on perennials (forest species and fruit trees), annual intercrops, and mixed plantations. Of the 47 annual crops associated with rubber in the literature, 20 studies dealt with rice, maize, banana, and cassava. Agronomy is the main discipline in the literature followed by socio-economy and then ecology. Only four papers are devoted to plant physiology and breeding. The Discussion Section has attempted to analyze the evolution of rubber agroforestry research, progress in the selection of food crop varieties adapted to agroforestry systems, and to draw some recommendations for rubber-based agroforestry systems associated with food crops.

In response to challenges caused by climate change, apple (Malus ×domestica) breeding programs must quickly develop more resilient cultivars. One strategy is to breed for various bloom times. Members of the genus Malus, including domesticated apple, wild species, and hybrids, exhibit striking variations in the bloom date. Although bloom time is strongly influenced by chilling requirements, other aspects of floral development in Malus and their contributions to bloom time are less known. The purpose of this study was to investigate potential connections between predormancy flower development and final bloom time in Malus species. We performed a phenological analysis of flower development in wild and domesticated apple with extreme differences in bloom time over the course of one developmental season. We tracked histological changes in the floral apex of representatives of three early-blooming Malus genotypes (M. ×domestica ‘Anna’ PI 280400, M. orthocarpa PI 589392, M. sylvestris PI 633824) and three late-blooming genotypes (M. angustifolia PI 589763, M. angustifolia PI 613880, M. ×domestica ‘Koningszuur’ PI 188517). Our study documented their floral meristem progression and organ development and expanded on current staging systems for apple flower development to describe the changes observed. The developmental trajectories of each genotype did not group according to bloom category, and we observed variations in the floral development stage at the time of dormancy onset.

Although nanoparticles have gained attention as efficient alternatives to conventional agricultural chemicals, there is limited knowledge regarding their effects on herbivorous insect behavior and plant physicochemistry. Here, we investigated the effects of foliar applications of nano-silica (SiO2NPs) and nano-selenium (SeNPs), and bulk-size silica (SiO2) on the choice behavior of the arrowhead scale insect on mandarin orange plants. One leaf of a bifoliate pair was treated with one of the three chemicals, while the other was treated with water (control). The respective SiO2, SeO2, calcium (Ca), and carbon (C) content levels in the leaf epidermis and mesophyll were quantified using SEM–EDX (or SEM–EDS); leaf toughness and the arrowhead scale density and body size were measured. First-instar nymphs preferred silica-treated leaves and avoided SeNP-treated leaves. SiO2 content did not differ between control and SiO2NP-treated leaves, but was higher in bulk-size SiO2-treated leaves. The SiO2 level in the control leaves was higher in the SiO2NP treatment compared with that in the control leaves in the bulk-size SiO2 treatment. Silica-treated leaves increased in toughness, but SeNP-treated leaves did not; leaf toughness increased with mesophyllic SiO2 content. The insect density per leaf increased with leaf toughness, SiO2 content and, in the SiO2NP treatment, with epidermal C content. There was no correlation between SeO2 content and insect density. This study highlights the potential uses of SeNPs as an insect deterrent and of silica for enhancing leaf toughness and attracting scale insects.

Abstract Background Spring frosts pose an important threat to orchard productivity in temperate zones and projections do not exclude damaging events in the future. However, there is no up-to-date and systematic comparison of the effectiveness and conditionality of the existing passive and active damage prevention strategies. This systematic review seeks to answer the questions “How do the performances of spring frost damage reduction strategies in temperate fruit orchards compare?” and “How do environmental conditions affect the effectiveness of frost damage reduction strategies in temperate fruit orchards?”. Methods This review covers a large range of on-field strategies for the protection of flowering orchards against damage inflicted by late spring frost. All major temperate fruit tree crops and grapevines were included, provided that the performance of frost damage reduction was compared against a control in terms of bud and flower survival, yield and delays in flowering time, or ambient temperature change. Articles and reports were collected between June and October 2021 from the Web of Science Core Collection and regional indexes and from the databases Scopus, FAO AGRIS, USDA Agricola, CAB Abstracts and the Groenekennis database of the University of Wageningen, the Netherlands, as well as from relevant institutional websites and the Chinese scholarly search engine ‘Baidu’. Biases resulting from inadequate randomisation, incomplete reporting or deficient study designs were reported. Temporal and spatial research trends and gaps were mapped based on 104 selected studies (from 8970 identified studies). Data was extracted for every experiment that an article reported on, leading to 971 data points. Groups of frost protection methods were compared in terms of effectiveness whereby environmental factors were examined to explain the variation of the effectiveness by means of mixed linear models. Review findings Most included studies originate from the United States and Europe more than from the temperate fruit production regions in Asia. An increase over time in the research on foliar applications, including growth regulation hormones was observed. Apple, peach and more recently grapevine were the most researched fruit types, followed by cherry and pear. The validity of the selected studies was generally low as measures of variability were reported only occasionally. Therefore, only descriptive comparisons of effectiveness were undertaken between intervention classes by fruit types. Sprinkler systems were found to perform best for most studied outcomes, while the emerging biochemical solutions revealed mixed results. The performances of resource-intensive heating systems did not outperform low-resource techniques such as tunnels or coverings of individual buds. The lack of reporting standards did not allow extensive correlations with ambient factors and reduced the transferability of the review’s findings. A need for standard protocols for experiments and reporting is therefore apparent. Conclusions In this field, strong shortcomings in the documentation of experimental setups and reporting standards were exposed. Implications for policy making are limited while for research recommendations to reduce bias and increase comparability are put forward.

Brown rot, caused by Monilinia spp., is one of the most important postharvest diseases of stone fruits worldwide. Brown rot resistance in peach is a polygenic trait controlled by multiple genes with a small effect. In this study, we assessed the feasibility of genomic prediction (GP) for brown rot resistance in peach using eight contrasting methods (GBLUP, rrBLUP, BayesA, BayesB, BayesC, Bayesian Ridge Regression, Bayesian Lasso and RKHS). A testing panel of 38 cultivars/advanced selections and 288 F1 individuals from 27 pedigree-related breeding families with 'Bolinha' and/or 'Contender' or almond source of resistance was phenotyped over six seasons (2015 to 2020). GP models outperformed MAS models under five-fold cross validation, and low to moderate predictive accuracy (PA) was achieved by fitting GP model for wounded (W) (0.092−0.449) and low PA for non-wounded (NW) disease severity index (0.129−0.295). An alternative cross validation approach using disease severity index recorded in lab to predict field disease incidence (FDI) in unphenotyped accessions revealed moderate correlation (0.548−0.553). Genomic predicted breeding value distinguished accessions with low FDI from those with high FDI. The results presented here demonstrated feasibility of incorporating GP in peach breeding.

Soil in most areas of the world is selenium (Se) deficient, which results a low Se content in agricultural products. To improve the fruit tree Se accumulation, the effects of different Artemisia argyi water extract concentrations (0, 100, 200, 300, and 400-fold dilutions) on the growth and Se accumulation of peach seedlings were studied by a pot experiment. A 300- and 400-fold dilution of A. argyi water extract increased the root and shoot biomass (dry weight), leaf chlorophyll a content, superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity, and peroxidase (POD) activity of peach seedlings, but decreased the leaf chlorophyll a/b. Different A. argyi water extract concentrations had no significant effects on peach leaf chlorophyll a content of peach seedlings, but increased the leaf carotenoid content, catalase (CAT) activity, and soluble protein content. Different A. argyi water extract concentrations increased the total Se, inorganic Se, and organic contents in roots and shoots of peach seedlings to some extent. Furthermore, A. argyi water extract concentration exhibited a linear relationship with the root and shoot total Se contents. Compared with the control, the 100-, 200-, 300-, and 400-fold dilutions of A. argyi water extract increased the shoot total Se content by 18.95%, 31.31%, 39.32%, and 51.59%, respectively. Different A. argyi water extract concentrations also increased the leaf Se metabolism-related enzyme activities of peach seedlings, including the activities of adenosine triphosphate sulfurase (ATPS), adenosine 5’-phosphosulfate reductase (APR), and serine acetyltransferase (SAT), as well as selenocysteine methyltransferase (SMT) to some extent. Moreover, correlation and grey relational analyses revealed the root total Se content, CAT activity, and ATPS activity to be closely associated with the total shoot Se content. Therefore, applying A. argyi water extract can thus promote the growth and Se uptake of peach seedlings, and the future study should focus on the application effects of Se uptake in peach fruits.

Plant regeneration through somatic embryogenesis provides a solution for maintaining and genetically improving crop or fruit varieties with desirable agronomic traits. For the fruit tree pomegranate (Punica granatum L.), despite some successful applications, the existing somatic embryogenesis protocols are limited by low availability of explants and susceptibility to browning. To address these problems, in this study, we developed an effective system for induction of high-vigor pomegranate somatic embryos derived from stem explants. The usage of stem explants breaks through the difficulty in obtaining material, thus making our system suitable for widespread commercial production. To enhance the performance of our system, we identified the optimal explants, subculture cycles and combination of basal media and plant growth regulators for each step. The results showed that inoculating stem explants onto a Murashige and Skoog (MS) medium supplemented with 1.0 mg/L 6-benzylaminopurine (6-BA) and 1.0 mg/L 1-naphthaleneacetic acid (NAA) achieved the best induction rate and growth status of pomegranate calli (induction rate = ~72%), and MS medium containing 0.5 mg/L 6-BA and 1.0 mg/L NAA was the optimal condition for the induction of embryogenic calli and somatic embryos (induction rate = ~74% and 79%, respectively). The optimal subculture period for embryogenic calli was found to be 30–35 days. Strong roots were then induced in the developed somatic embryo seedlings, which survived and grew well after transplantation to the natural environment, indicating the good vitality of the induced pomegranate somatic embryos. Together, our system provides a solution to mass somatic embryo induction and plant regeneration of pomegranate and lays a foundation for future genetic transformation and bioengineering improvement of pomegranate with favorable agronomic traits.

Abstract Background Improving yield prediction and selection efficiency is critical for tree breeding. This is vital for macadamia trees with the time from crossing to production of new cultivars being almost a quarter of a century. Genomic selection (GS) is a useful tool in plant breeding, particularly with perennial trees, contributing to an increased rate of genetic gain and reducing the length of the breeding cycle. We investigated the potential of using GS methods to increase genetic gain and accelerate selection efficiency in the Australian macadamia breeding program with comparison to traditional breeding methods. This study evaluated the prediction accuracy of GS in a macadamia breeding population of 295 full-sib progeny from 32 families (29 parents, reciprocals combined), along with a subset of parents. Historical yield data for tree ages 5 to 8 years were used in the study, along with a set of 4113 SNP markers. The traits of focus were average nut yield from tree ages 5 to 8 years and yield stability, measured as the standard deviation of yield over these 4 years. GBLUP GS models were used to obtain genomic estimated breeding values for each genotype, with a five-fold cross-validation method and two techniques: prediction across related populations and prediction across unrelated populations. Results Narrow-sense heritability of yield and yield stability was low (h2 = 0.30 and 0.04, respectively). Prediction accuracy for yield was 0.57 for predictions across related populations and 0.14 when predicted across unrelated populations. Accuracy of prediction of yield stability was high (r = 0.79) for predictions across related populations. Predicted genetic gain of yield using GS in related populations was 474 g/year, more than double that of traditional breeding methods (226 g/year), due to the halving of generation length from 8 to 4 years. Conclusions The results of this study indicate that the incorporation of GS for yield into the Australian macadamia breeding program may accelerate genetic gain due to reduction in generation length, though the cost of genotyping appears to be a constraint at present.

In vitro culture, ensuring rapid multiplication and production of plant material under aseptic conditions, represents an excellent tool for ex-situ conservation of tree species biodiversity and can be used for the conservation, among others, of endangered and rare crops. Among the Pyrus communis L. cultivars that have been abandoned over the years due to changed cultivation requirements, but which are still used today in breeding programs, there is the ‘Decana d’inverno’. Pear is generally considered a recalcitrant species for in vitro propagation due to weak multiplication rate, hyperhydricity, and susceptibility to phenolic oxidation. Therefore, the use of natural substances like neem oil (although little explored) represents one of the options to improve the in vitro plant’s tissue culture. In this context, the aim of the present work was to evaluate the effect of adding neem oil (0.1 and 0.5 m L L−1) to the growth substrate in order to optimise the in vitro culture of the ancient pear tree cultivar ‘Decana d’inverno’. The neem oil addition resulted in an increase in the number of shoots produced especially at both concentrations used. On the contrary, an increase in length of proliferated shoots was observed only with the addition of 0.1 mL L−1. The neem oil addition did not affect the explants viability, fresh and dry weights. Therefore, the present study demonstrated for the first time the possibility of using neem oil to optimise the in vitro culture of an ancient pear tree cultivar.

Metabolomics is an indispensable part of modern systems biotechnology, applied in the diseases’ diagnosis, pharmacological mechanism, and quality monitoring of crops, vegetables, fruits, etc. Metabolomics of fruit trees has developed rapidly in recent years, and many important research results have been achieved in combination with transcriptomics, genomics, proteomics, quantitative trait locus (QTL), and genome-wide association study (GWAS). These research results mainly focus on the mechanism of fruit quality formation, metabolite markers of special quality or physiological period, the mechanism of fruit tree’s response to biotic/abiotic stress and environment, and the genetics mechanism of fruit trait. According to different experimental purposes, different metabolomic strategies could be selected, such as targeted metabolomics, non-targeted metabolomics, pseudo-targeted metabolomics, and widely targeted metabolomics. This article presents metabolomics strategies, key techniques in metabolomics, main applications in fruit trees, and prospects for the future. With the improvement of instruments, analysis platforms, and metabolite databases and decrease in the cost of the experiment, metabolomics will prompt the fruit tree research to achieve more breakthrough results.

This study aimed to evaluate the effect of an arbuscular mycorrhizal fungus (AMF) Glomus mosseae on plant growth, root architecture, and proline metabolism in roots of peach (Prunes persica L.) under non-flooding and flooding conditions. The 12-day flooding dramatically inhibited root colonisation of G. mosseae, but induced a large number of extraradical mycelia. Although the flooding treatment also relatively inhibited growth and root architecture of peach, the mycorrhizal fungal inoculation dramatically increased shoot and root biomass, plant height, stem diameter, number of 1st- and 2nd-order lateral roots, root total length (mainly 0-1 cm and > 3 cm long), root surface area, and root volume under flooding. The study also revealed distinctly higher proline accumulation in the roots of mycorrhizal plants than non-mycorrhizal plants under both non-flooding and flooding conditions, accompanied by higher Δ1-pyrroline-5-carboxylate synthase (P5CS) activity and lower δ-ornithine transaminase and proline dehydrogenase activities. In addition, the PpP5CS1 gene expression was up-regulated by flooding and mycorrhization. This study concluded that mycorrhizal fungi enhanced flooding tolerance of peach through inducing proline accumulation and improving root architecture.

Mathematical models have been widely employed for the simulation of growth dynamics of annual crops, thereby performing yield prediction, but not for fruit tree species such as jujube tree (Zizyphus jujuba). The objectives of this study were to investigate the potential use of a modified WOFOST model for predicting jujube yield by introducing tree age as a key parameter. The model was established using data collected from dedicated field experiments performed in 2016–2018. Simulated growth dynamics of dry weights of leaves, stems, fruits, total biomass and leaf area index (LAI) agreed well with measured values, showing root mean square error (RMSE) values of 0.143, 0.333, 0.366, 0.624 t ha−1 and 0.19, and R2 values of 0.947, 0.976, 0.985, 0.986 and 0.95, respectively. Simulated phenological development stages for emergence, anthesis and maturity were 2, 3 and 3 days earlier than the observed values, respectively. In addition, in order to predict the yields of trees with different ages, the weight of new organs (initial buds and roots) in each growing season was introduced as the initial total dry weight (TDWI), which was calculated as averaged, fitted and optimized values of trees with the same age. The results showed the evolution of the simulated LAI and yields profiled in response to the changes in TDWI. The modelling performance was significantly improved when it considered TDWI integrated with tree age, showing good global (R2≥0.856, RMSE≤0.68 t ha−1) and local accuracies (mean R2≥0.43, RMSE≤0.70 t ha−1). Furthermore, the optimized TDWI exhibited the highest precision, with globally validated R2 of 0.891 and RMSE of 0.591 t ha−1, and local mean R2 of 0.57 and RMSE of 0.66 t ha−1, respectively. The proposed model was not only verified with the confidence to accurately predict yields of jujube, but it can also provide a fundamental strategy for simulating the growth of other fruit trees.

Papaya fruit (Carica papaya) has different degrees of ripening within each fruit, affecting its commercial market value. The fruit characteristics of “Tainung No. 2” Red papaya were investigated at the stem-end, middle, and calyx-end across 3 ripening stages and categorized based on fruit skin coloration: unripe at 16 weeks after anthesis (WAA), half-ripe at 18 WAA, and full-ripe at 20 WAA. The fruits maintained an elliptical shape during ripening with a ratio of 2.36 of the length to the width. The peel and pulp color changed from green to white to yellow during ripening, regardless of the three parts. In the pulp, soluble solid contents increased, and firmness decreased during ripening but did not differ among the three parts. Individual nutrient contents, including metabolites and minerals, changed dynamically between the ripening stages and fruit parts. Total carbohydrates and proteins, N, and K, were accumulated more at the stem-end during ripening; meanwhile, fructose, glucose, Mg, and Mn were accumulated more at the calyx-end. In the principal component analysis, ripening stages and fruit parts were distinctly determined by the first and second principal components, respectively. Understanding the nutrient and metabolite dynamics during ripening and their distribution within the fruit can help optimize cultivation practices, enhance fruit quality, and ultimately benefit both growers and consumers.

Gamma amino butyric acid (GABA), an important free amino acid in plant tissues, plays an essential role in all stages of plant growth and development. In this study, we aimed to explore the effects of GABA on the nutrient absorption of loquat [Eriobotrya japonica (Thunb.) Lindl.] seedlings. The effects of applying exogenous GABA in different concentrations (0.0, 0.5, 1.0, 1.5, and 2 g L−1) on the nutrient uptake of loquat seedlings were studied. GABA increased the biomass (dry weight) and contents of photosynthetic pigments in loquat seedlings to a certain extent. GABA concentration exhibited a quadratic polynomial regression relationship with the biomass. Exogenous GABA in different concentrations increased the total nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) contents in loquat seedlings, whereas only 0.5 and 1.0 g L−1 of GABA increased the potassium (K) content. Similarly, GABA concentration also had a polynomial regression relationship with the total N, P, and K contents. Compared to the control, 0.5, 1.0, 1.5, and 2.0 g L−1 of GABA increased the shoot total N content by 27.30, 32.99, 15.41, and 12.93%, respectively, and also increased the shoot total P content by 26.12, 37.52, 21.99, and 9.61%, respectively. Furthermore, correlation and grey relational analyses showed that the carotenoid content, root biomass, and soil alkali-hydrolyzable N concentration were the indicators most closely associated with the uptakes of N, P, and K in shoots. This study shows that exogenous GABA can promote the growth and nutrient uptake of loquat seedlings at an optimum concentration of 1.0 g L−1.

Grafting has been utilized to develop horticultural crops to increase plant vigor, yield potential, and tolerance to various environmental stresses. Grafting employs selected rootstocks of the same species or near relatives. Moreover, dwarfing is a desirable feature for intensive cultivation and efficient orchard management. However, information on the regulatory mechanisms of rootstock-induced vigor control remains unclear. Numerous studies comprehend the physiological and molecular mechanism of rootstock control scion vigor, which has significantly improved our understanding regarding vigor control processes in apple, litchi, pear, citrus, etc. This review summarizes the current knowledge on the impact of rootstocks on scion vigor and hormonal mechanisms involved in dwarfing, such as auxin (IAA), cytokinins (CK), abscisic acid (ABA), gibberellic acids (GAs), and brassinosteroids (BR). This study will provide fascinating information for future studies on rootstock-induced dwarfing effects and accelerate the breeding of dwarfing rootstocks.

Every winter, temperate woody plants have to cope with freezing stress. Winter hardiness is of crucial importance for pomegranate survival and productivity. A comparative morphological and metabolic study was conducted on the stems and buds of 15 field-grown mature pomegranate genotypes in seven time-points during two developmental cycles. Seasonal changes of frost hardiness, as determined by electrolyte leakage method, and metabolite analysis by HPLC and GC revealed the variability in frost hardiness and metabolic contents result from genetic background and organ, as well as seasonal condition. Morphological adaptations, as well as metabolic remodeling, are the distinct features of the hardy genotypes. Larger buds with a greater number of compressed scales and the higher number of protective leaves, together with the higher number and content of changed metabolites, especially amino acids, seem to provide a higher frost resistance for those trees. We recorded two-times the change in metabolites and several-times accumulation of amino acids in the stem compared with buds. A better potential of stem for metabolome adjustment during the hardening period and a higher level of tolerance to stress is therefore suggested. High levels of arginine, proline, glutamine, and asparagine, and particularly the accumulation of alanine, tryptophan, and histidine are responsible for excellent tolerance of the stem of tolerant genotypes. With regard to the protective roles of amino acids, a relation between stress tolerance and the level of amino acids is proposed. This points both to the importance of amino acids in the winter survival of pomegranate trees, and to the evaluation of frost tolerance in other plants, by these specific markers.

Guava (Psidium guajava L.) is one of the 50 most consumed fruits in the world. However, weed competition compromises fruit production in cultivation areas. Thus, this work aimed to evaluate the competitive interaction between guava plants and common infesting species on initial growth. Guava seedlings were cultivated during 60 days with Bidens subalternans DC., Waltheria indica L. or Commelina benghalensis L. in a randomized block design with four replicates. The experiment was conducted under greenhouse condition from February to May 2017 in Mossoró city, Brazil. The following variables were analysed: number of leaves; shoot and root length; stem diameter; root, stem, shoot and total dry mass; and leaf area. As a result, only guava plants suffered negative effects on growth due to the competition. W. indica and C. benghalensis were the most competitive species, reducing the number of leaves, leaf area and total dry matter of guava plants. However, guava and W. indica produced more root biomass when in competition. In contrast, B. subalternans and C. benghalensis was not affected by the presence of guava. In conclusion, competition with W. indica or C. benghalensis reduces the growth of guava after transplanting.

In order to understand photosynthetic responses of pomegranate plants (Punica granatum L.) to salinity, an experiment was conducted with three varieties, 'Mollar de Elche', 'Valenciana', and 'Wonderful', irrigated with seven salt concentrations (0, 40, 60, 80, 100, 120, and 140 mM NaCl). At the end of the experiment, parameters of gas exchange, chlorophyll fluorescence, water relations, and sugar and chloride concentrations were measured in leaves. As the concentration of NaCl increased, the concentration of Cl- in leaves was elevated, and the CO2 assimilation rate, stomatal conductance, variable fluorescence/maximum fluorescence ratio, PSII quantum yield, and total soluble sugars decreased. In 'Valenciana', the decrease of the net assimilation of CO2 could occur due to the closure of stomata, while in 'Mollar' and 'Wonderful', this was due to damage caused by Cl- toxicity. The study of carbohydrates also suggests a different behavior of carbon metabolism in the three varieties.

Clearing of natural ecosystems and land degradation due to unsustainable agricultural practices are becoming threats to the sustainability and productivity of agricultural systems in Burie town administrative, Amhara National Regional State, Ethiopia. The aim of this paper is therefore to assess the fruit tree species diversity in home garden agro-forestry and their role for supporting local people’s livelihoods in Burie town administration. Cultivated plants of 72 home gardens were surveyed and critical information were collected through questioner and focus group discussion from 12 households. Fruit tree species diversity (expressed in species richness and evenness) in home gardens in the study sites was determined using the Shannon-Weiner Index. The study basically considers the human consumption fruit trees species. A total of 18 fruit tree species represented by 9-genera and 7-families were recorded in home garden agro-forestry within the three wealth status (poor, medium, and rich) of the selected respondents commonly. From all wealth categories, the highest Shannon diversity index was recorded in rich and the lowest was in poor class category. Similarly, the highest species evenness was recorded in rich wealth category. However, there was no significant difference among rich and medium wealth categories for species richness. The study also revealed that age, land hold size, education status is the cause for species diversity in addition to the wealth status in the study area. Older respondents had significantly higher species richness and diversity than youngsters. It has been also found that almost all (100%) of the sampled households harvest and use at least four types of home garden products for various purposes. Lacks of management practices were the factors which puts the species diversity in question in the study area.

In the present study we investigated the possibility to use air ozone in fruit tree storage. The variables were: rate of ozonization, length of exposure to ozonized air and storage temperature. We assessed the impact of ozone on the vitality of the trees or bench grafted rootstocks, any changes appearing after storage and the feasibility of this technique under real conditions. Supplementary research was done to test the impact of ozonization on the potential occurrence of microorganisms and pests on trees. Results showed that trees can withstand relatively high rates of ozonization except for peach which is the most sensitive fruit; all the ozonization treatments impaired peach vitality. Other species withstand three months of storage in 1 °C and one hour of exposure to ozone in fortnight intervals without a significant impact on their vitality. A higher (5 °C) storage temperature with or without ozonization decreased the vitality of trees. Although it has been proved that ozonization can suppress damage‑causing microorganisms (bacteria and fungi) on trees, the fortnight frequency of ozonization did not prevent mould to develop. Results also indicated the potential effect of ozonization on the disinfestation of plant material from overwintering pests. The main operation restrictions of ozone exposure is the ability of ozone to decompose some materials and that it is harmful to human health.

Artocarpus heterophyllus Lam. and Mangifera indica L. are the common homestead species that are planted all over Bangladesh for fruit and commercial timber production to meet the local household demand. The allometric biomass model is a non-destructive mathematical tool to estimate the biomass and carbon storage in trees which are applied to estimate the biomass of Artocarpus heterophyllus and Mangifera indica in this study. The total above-ground biomass of sampled trees was calculated from stem volume, wood density, and biomass expansion factor (BEF). Frequently used four linear models (Ln transformed) were tested to derive the best fit allometric model for the total above-ground biomass (TAGB). The best fit model was selected considering the values of R2, RSE, AIC, AICw, and CF. The best fit TAGB allometric models of Artocarpus heterophyllus and Mangifera indica were TAGB = exp(−0.8971+ 1.9908*Ln (D)) and TAGB = exp(−0.2272865 + 1.8017*Ln(D)) respectively. In the case of both species, the best fit TAGB allometric models showed the highest efficiency in biomass estimation compared to the other frequently used regional and pan-tropical models.

Grafting is typically utilized to merge adapted seedling rootstocks with highly productive clonal scions. This process implies the interaction of multiple genomes to produce a unique tree phenotype. However, the interconnection of both genotypes obscures individual contributions to phenotypic variation (rootstock-mediated heritability), hampering tree breeding. Therefore, our goal was to quantify the inheritance of seedling rootstock effects on scion traits using avocado (Persea americana Mill.) cv. Hass as a model fruit tree. We characterized 240 diverse rootstocks from 8 avocado cv. Hass orchards with similar management in three regions of the province of Antioquia, northwest Andes of Colombia, using 13 microsatellite markers simple sequence repeats (SSRs). Parallel to this, we recorded 20 phenotypic traits (including morphological, biomass/reproductive, and fruit yield and quality traits) in the scions for 3 years (2015–2017). Relatedness among rootstocks was inferred through the genetic markers and inputted in a “genetic prediction” model to calculate narrow-sense heritabilities (h2) on scion traits. We used three different randomization tests to highlight traits with consistently significant heritability estimates. This strategy allowed us to capture five traits with significant heritability values that ranged from 0.33 to 0.45 and model fits (r) that oscillated between 0.58 and 0.73 across orchards. The results showed significance in the rootstock effects for four complex harvest and quality traits (i.e., total number of fruits, number of fruits with exportation quality, and number of fruits discarded because of low weight or thrips damage), whereas the only morphological trait that had a significant heritability value was overall trunk height (an emergent property of the rootstock–scion interaction). These findings suggest the inheritance of rootstock effects, beyond root phenotype, on a surprisingly wide spectrum of scion traits in “Hass” avocado. They also reinforce the utility of polymorphic SSRs for relatedness reconstruction and genetic prediction of complex traits. This research is, up to date, the most cohesive evidence of narrow-sense inheritance of rootstock effects in a tropical fruit tree crop. Ultimately, our work highlights the importance of considering the rootstock–scion interaction to broaden the genetic basis of fruit tree breeding programs while enhancing our understanding of the consequences of grafting.

Aim of study: Several studies point out that storage at -20 ºC is a suitable method for preserving pollen of many species in the long term. Part of those studies indicate the total storage time at which these conditions are optimal. However, we have found a lack of information about the freezing time conditions and incubation temperature of loquat pollen. The main objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of the -20 ºC conservation temperature on loquat (Eriobotrya japonica (Thunb.) Lindl.) pollen. Area of study: The study was conducted in Montserrat (Valencia, Spain). Material and methods: Loquat flowers were collected in November 2017 and stored at -20 ºC for three time periods: 4 (T1), 6 (T2) and 8 (T3) months. Subsequently, pollen grains were incubated at different temperatures for 72 h. We analyzed (i) the effect of freezing conservation time; (ii) the effect of incubation temperature on germination; (iii) the interaction between these two factors. Main results: T1 showed higher germination percentage and tube length values (mean and maximum) than T2 and T3. The highest germination percentage (52.77%) was detected for T1 at an incubation temperature of 25 ºC. The interaction between freezing time and incubation temperature showed more consistent results for T1 than for T2 and T3. Research highlights: This suggests that storing at -20 ºC for more than 4 months affects pollen grain and reduces germination and pollen growth. Therefore, -20 ºC loquat pollen storage should not exceed 4 months.

Strychnos spinosa Lam. is among the top nutrient-dense indigenous fruit species that are predominant in Southern Africa. It is a highly ranked indigenous fruit based on the nutrition and sensorial properties, which make it an important food source for the marginalized rural people. On the basis of the high vitamin C, iron, and zinc content, it has the capacity to improve the food- nutrition and the socioeconomic status of individuals, especially those in the rural areas of the developing nations. The nutritional composition of Strychnos spinosa compare favorably with many of the popular fruits, such as strawberries and orange. Additionally, Strychnos spinosa has antioxidant activity similar to well-known antioxidant fruits, which keeps it in the class of the popular fruits, giving it added nutrition–health-promoting benefits. In order to improve the availability of Strychnos spinosa, more research on the domestication, processing, preservation, value chain, and economic potential need to be further explored. Therefore, we recommend more concerted efforts from relevant stakeholders with interest in Strychnos spinosa fruit production as a possible sustainable solution to food shortage, food-nutrition insecurity, malnutrition, and austerity, mainly in the rural communities of the developing countries.

Botryosphaeriaceous fungi cause stem blight, canker and dieback in woody plants. During a survey on the fungal pathogens associated with blueberries in China, 135 blighted, cankered or dead blueberry branches were collected from Fujian and Shandong Provinces. Based on the morphological characterization and phylogenetic analyses of a concatenated ITS rDNA, tef1-α, TUB, and RPB2 loci, five new species of Lasiodiplodia, viz., L. clavispora, L. fujianensis, L. henanica, L. nanpingensis and L. paraphysoides were recognized. Detailed descriptions and illustrations, as well as multigene phylogenies, are provided in this paper. The diversity of plant pathogens on agriculturally and economically important plants is higher than anticipated.

Abstract Background Mango is an important tree fruit in Sierra Leone since it participates to food and nutritional security mainly in rural areas. However, the economic potential of this tree fruit is still untapped to a large extent. This situation is due to high loss and poor handling at post-harvest stage preventing farmers from meeting the quality standard for different markets. The aims of this paper were to analyse the constrains and opportunities for mango value chain development, as well as community-based copping strategies developed by chain actors to valorise the existing opportunities for better market development and forest conservation. Methods Data were collected in four sites around the Outamba Kilimi National Park, Sierra Leone, through focus group discussions with men and women groups of 25–35 mango value chain actors in each site. Results Results indicated that mango value chain is composed of nursery suppliers, mango producers, harvesters and assemblers, processors and traders. Main constraints encountered by both men and women are lack of: (1) polythene bags and improved mango seedlings, mineral fertilisers, herbicides, pesticide, (2) training on appropriate mango production practices, (3) appropriate harvesting tools, (4) appropriate processing knowledge and equipment, as well as high transportation cost. Hand weeding, use of available organic fertiliser, seeking of advices from colleagues farmers, equipment from other processors who own local processing equipment were some of the coping strategies developed by various actors along mango value chains. Soil fertility, favourable climatic conditions, technical and financial support from direct or indirect actors through training on good agronomic practices, processing and marketing techniques, availability of hired labour to perform farming and processing operations, existence of local processing plant to serve as outlet for fresh mango were identified as main factors to be exploited to improve mango value chains around Outamba Kilimi National Park in Sierra Leone. Conclusions Our results provided insight into the various factors limiting the performance of mango value chains around Outamba Kilimi National Park in Sierra Leone. This baseline study will help in designing and implementing appropriate strategies to promote mango value chains in the areas around the Outamba Kilimi National Park.

Two seedling rootstocks of Mahaleb cherry (Prunus mahaleb L.) from a German type cv. Alpruna marked as No. 2 and No. 6 were selected for their semi-dwarfing properties from biotypes growing at the Rural Experimental Station in Baranowo belonging to the University of Life Sciences in Poznan, Poland. In an orchard experiment in 2012-2013, growth and yield of eight- and nine-year old trees of the cvs Regina, Summit and Vanda were studied. These cultivars were grafted on Mahaleb cherry No. 2 and No. 6 and were compared to the control rootstock Mazzard (Prunus avium L.) cv. Alkavo. The Mahaleb cherry biotypes significantly decreased the trunk cross-sectional area and the crown volume of the trees. The cultivars grafted on Mahaleb cherry biotypes No. 2 and No. 6 had more flowers and they gave a higher yield. The yield efficiency for cultivars grafted on these rootstocks was higher than for rootstock Mazzard. Significant differences of the concentration of the elements were found for Fe, Cu, Zn in fruit and for Fe, Cu and Cr in leaves. Presence of Pb and Cr was not detected in sweet cherry fruit.

Spondias tuberosa Arruda, a fructiferous endemic tree of semiarid Northeast of Brazil, provides several services to its ecosystem as well as to humans. It provides feed for wild animals and domestic ruminants in addition to providing fruits that are rich in vitamins for the human diet. It is an important source of additional income for family farmers and a source for traditional therapeutic medicine. Despite the importance of this tree in northeastern Brazil, limited scientific effort have been accomplished so far towards a better understanding of the tree’s physiology and interaction within the ecosystem. Earlier studies about S. tuberosa focused on phenology, physiology, population genetics, management practices, and socioeconomic aspects. Due to the lack of breeding and cloning programs, physiological studies and management trials were based on heterogenic plant material, which led to ambiguous results. In order to move forward with S. tuberosa research, especially for its genetic conservations and agro-industrial exploitation, basic breeding and intensified genetic research are urgently required. Despite the few publications on S. tuberosa, the tree can be considered scientifically neglected, particularly if compared with other members of the Anacardiaceae family.

Older apple trees often demonstrate physiologically unreasonable shoot distribution due to root system aging, which results in lower fruit yield and poor fruit quality. Therefore this study was conducted to test whether root pruning combined with arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi could restore growth potential of fortyyear-old Red Fuji apple trees (Malus × domestica Borkh.) in a commercial orchard in 2013, by root pruning along both sides of rows, 80 cm from the trunk, to a depth of 30 cm and application of 100 ml arbuscular mycorrhizal inoculum per plant. Results showed that the percentage of root colonized by mycorrhizal fungi increased as root pruning was combined with arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi, however mycorrhizal colonization was not seen in the control roots and roots only by root pruning. For control tree total number of shoots decreased by 28.22% in 2015 than in 2013 and shoots mainly distributed in the outer canopy accounting for 58.10% of the total, which caused the lower light intensity inside the canopy, followed by lower fruit yield and poor fruit quality. Compared to control plant, shoot reduced by 33.96 and 38.51% in the outer canopy but increased by 97.99 and 123.69% in the inner canopy in 2015, as well as 390.20 and 478.43% in the vertical height of 1.5 to 2.5 m canopy, respectively treated by root pruning alone and combined with arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi. Root pruning alone and combined with arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi also raised the relative light intensity by 38.71 and 60.26% in the inner canopy in 2015, subsequent fruit yield by 315.79 and 373.68% respectively, in comparison to control plant. Shoot re-distribution improved fruit quality such as increase in firmness and soluble solid. Data indicated that the effect of root pruning combined with arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi on the rejuvenation of older apple trees was stronger than root pruning alone. It is therefore concluded that root pruning combined with arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi can think of as a measure to renew the older apple trees.

Studies evaluating the internal morphology and seed quality of native species are essential for successful conservation programs. Our aim was to verify the efficiency of X-ray imagery in evaluating cashew-tree-of-the-cerrado (Anacardium othonianum Rizz.) achene viability after desiccation. The achenes were collected at 12% water content (w.b.) and dried in silica gel until they reached 10, 8, 6, and 4% (w.b.). The fruit morphology and the quality of the seeds were evaluated by X-ray test together with vigor, electrical conductivity and emergence tests. Achenes with different water contents were exposed to an X-ray machine at 18 kV for 11 s and were thereafter submitted to emergence tests. The images were analyzed, and the achenes were classified based on internal morphology as completely full, malformed, or empty. These results were compared to those from the emergence tests. The statistical design was a complete randomized factorial (5 x 3). Desiccation to 4% (w.b.) did not damage or modify the internal structures. X-ray was efficient in evaluating the internal morphology and detecting achene quality, making it possible to remove empty and abnormal fruit and form vigorous seed lots, reducing the cost of storage and bedding plant production for this native species.

Impact of climate change on the geographical distrubution of suitable areas for cultivation and conservation of underutilized fruit trees: case study of the tamarind tree in Benin. Climate change may limit integration of Underutilized Agroforestry Fruits Trees (UAFT) into formal cropping systems as a strategy to increase rural household income in Africa. The present study analyzed the potential impact of climate change on the geographical distribution of suitable areas for tamarind (Tamarindus indica L.), an economically important UAFT species. Presence records of the species were collected and combined with bioclimatic data derived from the Worldclim data base and from soil type data. The Maximum Entropy Modeling principle (MAXENT) was used in combination with a Geographic Information System (GIS) to forecast current and future (horizon 2050) suitable habitats for the cultivation and conservation of the species. Three different climate models were used for future predictions (the CCCMA, HadCM3 and CSIRO models) under IPCC scenario A2. Under current conditions, 65% of the national area and 87% of the national protected area network were found to be highly suitable for the cultivation and conservation of local tamarind ecotypes, respectively. It is possible that an increase in rainfall (CCCMA and HadCM3 models) will convert the currently highly suitable zones (semi-arid and subhumid dry) into poorly suitable areas at horizon 2050. A decline in precipitation (CSIRO model) could also convert the currently poorly suitable zones (sub-humid humid) into highly suitable zones. In the case of an aridification of the climate (CSIRO), cultivation and conservation of tamarind could become possible all over Benin and/or require the introduction of ecotypes from more arid areas. The predictive capacity of climatic models is constantly improving and it is therefore recommended that such studies be undertaken in order to better inform decision making for the optimum use of UAFT species.

In this work, a LIDAR-based 3D Dynamic Measurement System is presented and evaluated for the geometric characterization of tree crops. Using this measurement system, trees were scanned from two opposing sides to obtain two three-dimensional point clouds. After registration of the point clouds, a simple and easily obtainable parameter is the number of impacts received by the scanned vegetation. The work in this study is based on the hypothesis of the existence of a linear relationship between the number of impacts of the LIDAR sensor laser beam on the vegetation and the tree leaf area. Tests performed under laboratory conditions using an ornamental tree and, subsequently, in a pear tree orchard demonstrate the correct operation of the measurement system presented in this paper. The results from both the laboratory and field tests confirm the initial hypothesis and the 3D Dynamic Measurement System is validated in field operation. This opens the door to new lines of research centred on the geometric characterization of tree crops in the field of agriculture and, more specifically, in precision fruit growing.

Ziziphus spina-christi (L.) Willd. is a fruit tree species growing wild in arid and semi-arid areas of Asia and Africa where rural populations intensively use its fruits, leaves, bark and wood. However, little is known about the effects of salinity, a widespread problem in these regions, on early growth and mineral composition of this species. This study was conducted under controlled conditions to contribute to filling this gap. Six weeks old seedlings of Z. spina-christi germinated in a full strength Hoagland solution were subjected to 0, 40, 80 and 160 mM NaCl. Compared to the unstressed control salinity levels of 80 and 160 mM reduced plant height, leaf number, leaf chlorophyll, total leaf area and dry matter by > 50%. Salinity levels of 40, 80 and 160 mM enhanced leaf water contents by 14, 16 and 17%, respectively and 160 mM NaCl raised the concentration of Na and Cl ions in leaf tissues 81- and 21-fold. The K/Na ratio, in contrast, was hardly affected by increasing salinity indicating adaptation or tolerance of Z. spina-christi to low or moderate NaCl salinity. These results suggest that Z. spina-christi could be an interesting species for re-vegetation of moderately degraded saline lands.

O presente trabalho teve como objetivos estudar a variabilidade genética, estimar parâmetros genéticos e fenotípicos, e realizar a predição de valores genéticos dos indivíduos de açaizeiro irrigado no Estado do Pará, utilizando a metodologia BLUP/REML a partir da avaliação de progênies com base nos caracteres altura do primeiro cacho (APC), peso total do cacho (PTC), peso total de frutos (PTF), número de cachos (NC), peso médio do cacho (PMC), comprimento médio da ráquis (CMR), número médio de ráquilas (NMR), número de perfilhos (NP) e peso médio de cem frutos (P100). Cinqüenta progênies foram avaliadas em dois látices 5 x 5 com duas repetições e parcelas lineares de cinco plantas cada, no espaçamento de 5 m x 5 m. O programa computacional Selegen- Reml/Blup foi utilizado para as análises genéticas e a identificação dos melhores indivíduos para compor a população de produção de sementes para um programa a curto prazo e a de melhoramento para um programa a longo prazo. As correlações genotípicas de maiores magnitudes foram aquelas envolvendo o peso total de frutos e peso total do cacho, peso total do cacho e número de cacho e peso total de fruto e número de cacho, indicando que a seleção para peso total de frutos pode ser realizada por meio da seleção daquela de mais fácil seleção. As estimativas dos parâmetros genéticos obtidos revelam excelente potencial seletivo da população e variabilidade genética suficiente para o melhoramento genético da população a curto e longo prazos. Ganho genético considerável de 45,33% em relação à média do experimento pode ser obtido com a seleção dos 20 melhores indivíduos para o caráter produção total de frutos.The present work aimed to study the genetic variability, estimate the genetic and phenotypic parameters and to conduct the prediction of genetic values of individuals of irrigated açai tree in the state of Pará. The objective was the selection and genetic improvement of the production of fruits, using the REML/BLUP procedure applied in the progenies for the characters height of the first cluster, total cluster mass, total fruit mass, number of clusters, mean cluster weight, average length of the leaf rachis, average number of rachillas, number of tillers and average mass of one hundred fruits. Fifty progenies were evaluated in two 5 x 5 lattice design with two replications and linear plots- of five plants each, in a 5 m x 5 m spacing. The software Selegen- Reml/Blup was used for the genetic analyses and identification of the best individuals to compose the population for seed production (short-term program) and of improvement (long-term program). The estimation of genotipic correlation was high between total fruit mass and number of cluster and average among total fruit mass and average cluster mass and number of rachillas. The estimates of the genetic parameters obtained in the present study show excellent selective potential of the population and sufficient genetic variability for the genetic improvement of the population in short and long terms. Considerable genetic gain of 45.33% relative to the average of the experiment can be obtained with the election of the 20 best individuals for the character total production of fruits.

O achachairu (Garcinia sp), fruta largamente produzida na Bolívia, vem sendo comercializado no Brasil há vários anos. O fruto é globoso-oblongo, de polpa branca, suculenta e textura mucilaginosa e de sabor doce-acidulado equilibrado (ºBrix 15 e pH 4,1). Devido ao crescente interesse em seu cultivo no Brasil, pesquisaram-se a germinação das sementes e o desenvolvimento das plântulas durante os primeiros 12 meses após sua emergência. As sementes, extraídas de frutos bem maduros, foram postas a germinar em duas situações: 1) ambiente controlado em estufa tipo B.O.D., sob as temperaturas de 25 e 30 ºC, fotoperíodo de 16 horas e irradiância de 32 µmol.m-1.s-1, e 2) ambiente de temperatura não-controlada: 3) B.O.D, cuja temperatura oscilava entre 20 e 30 ºC, e 4) sob temperatura ambiente de laboratório (25± 2 ºC). O melhor resultado foi obtido na temperatura constante de 30 ºC, com germinação de 92% e índice de velocidade de germinação (IVG) de 0,255. Quando germinada em ambiente de laboratório, a germinação das sementes mostrou-se baixa (30%), com IVG de 0,015. O desenvolvimento das plântulas em casa de vegetação ocorreu de forma bastante lenta, principalmente nas primeiras semanas após a emergência. O primeiro par de folhas surgiu após três semanas da emergência das plântulas, quando essas mediam 8 cm em média. A partir do oitavo mês de desenvolvimento, as plântulas emitiram várias ramificações laterais a partir da porção mediana para a região apical.The achachairu (Garcinia sp), a fruit widely grown in Bolivia, has been commercialized in Brazil for many years. The fruit is globular-oblong shaped, with a white succulent pulp, mucilaginous texture and a well balanced sweet-acid flavor (ºBrix 15; pH 4.1). Due to the increasing interest in its cultivation in Brazil, this work was carried out aiming to study the seeds germination and seedling development throughout the first 12 months after seed emergence. The seeds, after being extracted from full ripe fruits were placed in a B.O.D. type chamber, under the following temperatures: 25, 30, 20-30 ºC, as well as under room temperature (25±2 ºC). The best result was given by the steady temperature of 30ºC, with a germination of 92% and a germination speed index (GSI) of 0,255. At room temperature, seeds germination was low (30%), with a GSI of 0,015. Seedling development at greenhouse conditions was very slow mainly throughout the first weeks post emergence. The first pair of leaves appeared 25 days after seedling emergence, when seedlings averaged 8cm. From the eighth month on, many lateral branches were burst out, from the seedling medial portion towards the apical one.

The responses of flowering phenology to temperature increases in temperate fruit trees have rarely been investigated in contrasting climatic regions. This is an appropriate framework for highlighting varying responses to diverse warming contexts, which would potentially combine chill accumulation declines and heat accumulation increases. To examine this issue, a data set was constituted in apple tree from flowering dates collected for two phenological stages of three cultivars in seven climate-contrasting temperate regions of Western Europe and in three mild regions, one in Northern Morocco and two in Southern Brazil. Multiple change-point models were applied to flowering date series, as well as to corresponding series of mean temperature during two successive periods, respectively determining for the fulfillment of chill and heat requirements. A new overview in space and time of flowering date changes was provided in apple tree highlighting not only flowering date advances as in previous studies but also stationary flowering date series. At global scale, differentiated flowering time patterns result from varying interactions between contrasting thermal determinisms of flowering dates and contrasting warming contexts. This may explain flowering date advances in most of European regions and in Morocco vs. stationary flowering date series in the Brazilian regions. A notable exception in Europe was found in the French Mediterranean region where the flowering date series was stationary. While the flowering duration series were stationary whatever the region, the flowering durations were far longer in mild regions compared to temperate regions. Our findings suggest a new warming vulnerability in temperate Mediterranean regions, which could shift towards responding more to chill decline and consequently experience late and extended flowering under future warming scenarios.

O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar os efeitos de fungos micorrízicos arbusculares (FMA) e da adubação fosfatada em mudas de mangabeira (Hancornia speciosa Gomes). O experimento, em casa de vegetação, utilizou delineamento inteiramente casualizado em fatorial com dois tratamentos de solo nativo oriundo de pomar com mangabeiras, desinfestado com brometo de metila e não-desinfestado, seis doses de P (3*, 3, 48, 93, 138 e 183 mg dm-3) e três tratamentos de inoculação, Gigaspora albida Schenck & Smith, Glomus etunicatum Becker & Gerdemann e controle sem inoculação, com quatro repetições. O tratamento 3* não recebeu solução nutritiva e os demais receberam solução nutritiva de Hoagland sem fósforo por ocasião da inoculação. Após 150 dias, observou-se aumento na altura, biomassa e área foliar nos tratamentos com G. albida, em solo desinfestado. Respostas à inoculação ocorreram nas mudas cultivadas com a menor dose de P, nos dois tratamentos de solo. A mangabeira mostrou-se dependente da micorrização apenas na menor dose de P em solo desinfestado. Nos demais níveis de P, a dependência variou em função do FMA e da condição do solo. A associação com G. albida proporcionou melhor desenvolvimento das mudas de mangabeira.The objective of this work was to evaluate the effects of the association of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) and phosphorus fertilization on seedlings of "mangaba" (Hancornia speciosa). The experiment, at a greenhouse, was in a completely randomized factorial design with two treatments of the native soil from an H. speciosa orchard, fumigated with methyl bromite and non-fumigated, six doses of P (3*, 3, 48, 93, 138 and 183 mg dm-3) and three inoculation treatments, Gigaspora albida Schenck & Smith, Glomus etunicatum Becker & Gerdemann and an uninoculated control, with four replicates. The treatment 3* did not receive nutrient solution and the others received Hoagland nutrient solution without phosphorus, at the time of inoculation. After 150 days, high increment on height, shoot biomass and leaf area were observed in the treatments with G. albida, in fumigated soil. Positive response to inoculation occurred in seedlings cultivated in soil with the lower phosphorus level, in both soil treatments. Hancornia speciosa was mycorrhiza dependent only when in fumigated soil, at the lowest phosphorus level. In treatments at other levels, the dependency varied according to the AMF and soil condition. The association with G. albida enhanced growth of H. speciosa.

Fruit tree production is gaining an increasing importance in the central Amazon and elsewhere in the humid tropics, but very little is known about the nutrient dynamics in the soil-plant system. The present study quantified the effects of fertilization and cover cropping with a legume (Pueraria phaseoloides (Roxb.) Benth.) on soil nitrogen (N) dynamics and plant nutrition in a young guarana plantation (Paullinia cupana Kunth. (H.B. and K.) var. sorbilis (Mart.) Ducke) on a highly weathered Xanthic Ferralsol. Large subsoil nitrate (NO3-) accumulation at 0.3-3 m below the guarana plantation indicated N leaching from the topsoil. The NO3- contents to a depth of 2 m were 2.4 times greater between the trees than underneath unfertilized trees (P0.05). Even without a legume intercrop, large amounts of NO3- were found in the subsoil between unfertilized trees. Subsoil NO3- between the trees could be utilized, however, by fertilized guarana. This can be explained by a more vigorous growth of fertilized trees which had a larger nutrient demand and exploited a larger soil volume. With a legume cover crop, however, more mineral N was available at the topsoil which was leached into the subsoil and consequently accumulated at 0.3-3 m depth. Fertilizer additions of P and K were needed to increase subsoil NO3- use between trees.A produção de fruteiras está ganhando grande importância na Amazônia Central e em outras partes dos trópicos úmidos mas, muito pouco ainda é conhecido sobre a dinâmica de nutrientes no sistema solo-planta. Inventory of Vegetal Species Cultivated in Plots Gardens in Urban Environment. Instance of Limete Commune-Kinshasa- Democratic Republic of Congo. A survey carried out in 201 plots of the "commune" of Limete permitted to inventoriate nineteen species of cultivated vegetables and 764 plants of 18 fruit-tree species planted or kept in this area. Mangifera indica is the most planted tree species and Ipomoae batatas is the most frequently cultivated vegetable species. Promoted and supported, this urban agriculture can modify the town ecosystem characteristics with a vegetation able to purify the air, to regulate the climate, to restore soil fertility and to provide vegetables and fruits to the population.

The study reveals the factors of transferring radionuclides 137Cs, 40K and 232Th from soil under fruit trees to the components of fruit trees. Three fruit trees growing in two different places were chosen. 6 soil samples and apple tree components were taken from Ukmergė city. Kalviškiai near Visaginas town is the second place of growing apple and pear trees to the components of which the transfer of radionuclides was made. The article discusses the methodology of preparing fruit tree components for radiometric research and submits the evaluation methods for transfer factors. The paper analyzes the obtained results of research on transfer factors. The conducted analysis has showed that 137Cs, 40K and 232Th patterns of transfer depend on the type of a fruit tree and on the investigated components. The study has also disclosed that the pear tree collects all examined radionuclides to a greater extent than apple trees. Finally, the evaluation of transferring radionuclides to separate fruit tree components displays that the least amount of 137Cs, 40K and 232Th is found in the fruits of the trees, whereas the biggest - in bark, leaves and roots. Pirmoji augimvietė buvo Ukmergės rajonas, Jogvilų k., kurioje tirtas dirvožemis ir obels sandai. Antroji augimvietė – Visagino sen., Kalviškių k., kurioje nagrinėta radionuklidų pernaša iš dirvožemio į kriaušės ir obels sandus. Aptariama dirvožemio ir vaismedžio sandų paruošimo radiometriniam tyrimui metodika. Pateikta pernašos faktorių vertinimo metodika. Analizuojami gauti pernašos faktorių tyrimo rezultatai. Išnagrinėjus rezultatus gauti 137Cs, 40K ir 232Th pernašos dėsningumai, priklausomai nuo vaismedžio rūšies ir nuo nagrinėjamo sando. Gauta, kad kriaušės vaismedis visus tris nagrinėtus radionuklidus kaupia labiau, lyginant su obelimis. Įvertinus radionuklidų pernašą į atskirus vaismedžių sandus nustatyta, kad 137Cs, 40K ir 232Th mažiausiai kaupia vaismedžių vaisiai, labiausiai – žievė, lapai, šaknys. Central leader and Vase form canopy models were built using FEM. Their main characteristics were chosen to be the same. The models were virtually exposed to the effect of steady-state horizontal forced vibration in the frequency range of 0-20 Hz. Acceleration-frequency curves were calculated and drawn to find the best frequency values for the effective detachment and also to see the acceleration differences in the limbs. For the same purpose the direction of shaking was also changed. It was found that for the Central leader canopy shape multidirectional shaking would bring uniform detachment while for the Vase form trees also the unidirectional shakers were appropriate. The acceleration achieved for the Vase form models were much higher than for the Central leader type. The acceleration-frequency curve of the shaker unit can be used to find the best frequency for shaking.
