The control of Spodoptera frugiperda (J. E. Smith, 1797) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) in cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.) has been limited by the rapid development of resistance to insecticides and Bt toxins. The fall armyworm has become increasingly present in cotton fields, becoming a major problem for growers. Therefore, the demand for new and more sustainable tools for managing this pest has increased in recent years. Ideally, the new tool should be compatible with other available control tactics, such as the use of Bt plants, and it should be implemented following IPM principles. In this study, we tested the efficacy of a liquid pheromone formulation for the Fall armyworm control in Bt and conventional cotton varieties in the Brazilian Midwest. Our results showed that the capture of insects in traps has been reduced by 85% in areas treated with pheromone compared to control suggesting high levels of mating suppression. Pheromone treatment also resulted in 70% less damage to cotton reproductive structures when compared to areas not treated with the pheromone in conventional cotton. Moreover, applying pheromone provided an additional benefit to Bt cotton, resulting in 85% damage reduction. Our results show the effectiveness and feasibility of mating disruption with pheromone as an important management tactic for Lepidopterans in cotton. However, no significant differences were found in yield in the conditions tested. These results represent a potential key step toward developing more sustainable tools for pest management in Brazil.

We provide a lower value for the volume of a unit vector field tangent to an antipodally punctured Euclidean sphere $\mathbb{S}^2$ depending on the length of an ellipse determined by the indexes of its singularities. We also exhibit minimizing vector fields $\vec{v}_k$ within each index class and show that they are the only ones that are sharp for the volume. These fields have areas given essentially by the length of ellipses depending just on the indexes in $N$ and $S$.

This study applied the Pearson correlation coefficient and principal component analysis as tools for unsupervised qualitative petroleum system evaluation techniques. A total of 252 oil samples (32 features per sample) representative of two Brazilian sedimentary basins (Recôncavo and Potiguar) were used to classify them according to their respective degrees of maturation and origin. The large initial set of variables comprises data on δ13C composition, saturate, aromatic, polar compound fractions, and the techniques reduced biomarkers to the most important variables, maintaining the global pattern of variance. The results were efficient in discriminating different petroleum systems from lacustrine, marine, and mixing sources, as observed in the studied accumulations from the Lower Cretaceous sediments of the Recôncavo and Potiguar basins. The methodology proved to be very useful to vene better characterize the petroleum systems. This methodology can be applied to analyze a large amount of oil samples, using simple software and spending relatively less time.

Objective: To investigate whether poor antidepressant tolerability is associated with functional brain changes in children and adolescents of parents with bipolar I disorder (at-risk youth). Methods: Seventy-three at-risk youth (ages 9-20 years old) who participated in a prospective study and had an available baseline functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) scan were included. Research records were reviewed for the incidence of adverse reactions related to antidepressant exposure during follow-up. The sample was divided among at-risk youth without antidepressant exposure (n=21), at-risk youth with antidepressant exposure and no adverse reaction (n=12), at-risk youth with antidepressant-related adverse reaction (n=21), and healthy controls (n=20). The fMRI task was a continuous performance test with emotional distracters. Region-of-interest mean activation in brain areas of the fronto-limbic emotional circuit was compared among groups. Results: Right amygdala activation in response to emotional distracters significantly differed among groups (F3,66 = 3.1, p = 0.03). At-risk youth with an antidepressant-related adverse reaction had the lowest amygdala activation, while at-risk youth without antidepressant exposure had the highest activation (p = 0.004). Conclusions: Decreased right amygdala activation in response to emotional distracters is associated with experiencing an antidepressant-related adverse reaction in at-risk youth. Further studies to determine whether amygdala activation is a useful biomarker for antidepressant-related adverse events are needed.

Objectives: To prospectively investigate whether baseline clinical characteristics and medication exposure predict development of major depressive disorder or bipolar disorder in offspring of parents with bipolar disorder. Methods: Youth aged 9-20 years with at least one biological parent with bipolar disorder and no prior history of mood or psychotic episodes (n=93) were prospectively evaluated and treated naturalistically during the study. Participants were divided into two groups: converters, defined as those who met DSM-IV criteria for a mood episode during follow-up (n=19); or non-converters (n=74). Logistic regression models were used to investigate associations between baseline clinical variables and medication exposure during follow-up and risk of developing a first mood episode (conversion). Results: Multivariate regression analyses showed that baseline anxiety disorders and subsyndromal mood disorders were associated with increased risk of conversion during follow-up. Adding medication exposure to the multivariate model showed that exposure to antidepressants during follow-up was associated with increased risk of conversion. Conclusions: Caution should be used when treating bipolar offspring with anxiety and/or emerging depressive symptoms using antidepressant agents, given the increased risk of developing a major mood disorder.

Bisphenol A (BPA) is an abundant raw material applied in the production of daily necessities, such as food cans, baby bottles, electronic and medical equipment. Phytotherapeutic use of plant preparations has long been known for multiple target medicinal uses. The species Bauhinia forficata is widely used as hypoglycemic, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, diuretic and hypocholesterolemic agent. The aim of this study was to verify the effects of B. forficata extract in association with BPA exposure on serological parameters, hepatic antioxidant status and glycogen store capacity in Wistar rats. B. forficata was able to reduce BPA-induced glucose levels; it also prevented the early glucose elevation in control and BPA-exposed animals after the glucose provocative test. This effect was related to the hepatic glycogen content; while BPA reduced the hepatic glycogen deposits B. forficata treatment contributed to minimize it. BPA and B. forficata singly caused elevation in triacylglycerol and VLDL levels and reduction in cholesterol and LDL concentrations. BPA increased hepatic malondialdehyde levels and reduced catalase activity, thus inducing liver oxidative stress. Conversely, B. forficata treatment reduced malondialdehyde concentration without interfering with catalase activity; this antioxidant capacity is attributed to the flavonoids content (e.g., kaempferol and myricetin). Based on these results, we demonstrated that B. forficata commercial extract has hypoglycemic and antioxidant properties capable of minimizing the effects of BPA. However, it should be considered that the consumption of herbal commercial extract must be judicious to avoid deleterious health effects. This article aims at performing maritime target classification in SAR images using machine learning (ML) and deep learning (DL) techniques. In particular, the targets of interest are oil platforms and ships located in the Campos Basin, Brazil. Two convolutional neural networks (CNNs), VGG-16 and VGG-19, were used for attribute extraction. The logistic regression (LR), random forest (RF), support vector machine (SVM), k-nearest neighbours (kNN), decision tree (DT), naive Bayes (NB), neural networks (NET), and AdaBoost (ADBST) schemes were considered for classification. The target classification methods were evaluated using polarimetric images obtained from the C-band synthetic aperture radar (SAR) system Sentinel-1. Classifiers are assessed by the accuracy indicator. The LR, SVM, NET, and stacking results indicate better performance, with accuracy ranging from 84.1% to 85.5%. The Kruskal–Wallis test shows a significant difference with the tested classifier, indicating that some classifiers present different accuracy results. The optimizations provide results with more significant accuracy gains, making them competitive with those shown in the literature. There is no exact combination of methods for SAR image classification that will always guarantee the best accuracy. The optimizations performed in this article were for the specific data set of the Campos Basin, and results may change depending on the data set format and the number of images.

Purpose: This research examines the superiority of analysts over random walk models in forecasting the results of publicly-traded Brazilian companies in the short and long term. Originality/value: The literature indicates the uncontested superiority of market analysts because of their temporal and informational advantages. However, recent international studies call for a re-evaluation of this superiority, indicating that, for certain company characteristics, and primarily for long-term estimates, the superiority of analysts is not confirmed. Design/methodology/approach: This work evaluates the profit forecasting of analysts and simple and growth random walk models over the short and long term over 2010-2015 for publicly traded Brazilian companies, using the information available for the period with annual intervals. Findings: The results indicate: 1. the greater forecasting accuracy of simple random walk models compared to the growth random walk models; and 2. the greater forecasting accuracy of random walk models overall, with analyst forecasts only being superior for cases with three months of lag. The evidence suggests the forecasting superiority of the random walk models when compared to the market analysts' forecasts. The results suggest low efficiency of the forecasts of market analysts for the forecast of future results of publicly traded Brazilian companies in the analyzed period. / Objetivo: Esta pesquisa analisa a superioridade dos analistas com relação aos modelos random walk ao preverem os resultados de empresas brasileiras de capital aberto de curto e longo prazos. Originalidade/valor: A literatura indica superioridade irrestrita dos analistas de mercado devido às suas vantagens de tempo e informação. Entretanto, recentes estudos da literatura internacional apontam para a necessidade de uma reavaliação dessa superioridade, indicando que, para determinadas características da empresa, e principalmente para estimativas de longo prazo, a superioridade dos analistas não é confirmada. Design /metodologia/abordagem: Este trabalho avalia as previsões de lucro dos analistas e dos modelos random walk, simples e com crescimento, de curto e longo prazos, no período de 2010 a 2015 para as empresas brasileiras de capital aberto, utilizando dados com periodicidade anual. Resultados: Os resultados indicam: 1. maior acurácia de previsão para os modelos random walk simples quando comparados com os modelos de random walk com crescimento; 2. para a amostra total, nota-se maior acurácia da previsão dos modelos random walk, com superioridade dos analistas apenas para previsões com três meses de defasagem. A evidência sugere a superioridade de previsão dos modelos random walk quando comparados às previsões dos analistas de mercado. Os resultados sugerem baixa eficiência das previsões dos analistas de mercado para a previsão de resultado futuro das empresas brasileiras de capital aberto no período analisado.

Heavy metals may cause acute and chronic toxic effects to humans and other organisms, hence the need to treat wastewater properly, as it contains these toxicants. This work aimed at assessing zinc, copper, cadmium, and chromium in water, soil, and plants that are irrigated with effluent from Manase and Soche Wastewater Treatment Plants (WWTPs) in Blantyre, Malawi. Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometry (AAS) was used to assess the heavy metals. Heavy Metal Health Risk Assessment (HMHRA) on plants (vegetables) around both WWTPs was also conducted. Average daily dose (ADD) and target hazard quotients (THQ) were used to assess HMHRA. Physicochemical parameters were determined using standard methods from American Public Health Association (APHA). The heavy metal ranges were below detection limit (BDL) to 6.94 mg/L in water, 0.0003 to 4.48 mg/kg in soil, and 3 to 32 mg/L in plants. The results revealed that plants irrigated with effluent from WWTP had high values of aforementioned metals exceeding the Malawi Standards and WHO permissible limits. Furthermore, the health risk assessment values showed that vegetables consumed for a long period of time from Manase WWTP were likely to cause adverse health effects as compared to those from Soche WWTP.

Objective: To compare social skills and related executive functions among bipolar disorder (BD) patients with a family history of mood disorders (FHMD), BD patients with no FHMD and healthy control (HCs). Methods: We evaluated 20 euthymic patients with FHMD, 17 euthymic patients without FHMD, and 31 HCs using the Social Skills Inventory (SSI) and a neuropsychological battery evaluating executive function, inhibitory control, verbal fluency and estimated intelligence. Results: Both BD groups had lower SSI scores than controls. Scores for one subfactor of the social skills questionnaire, conversational skills and social performance, were significantly lower among patients with FHMD than among patients without FHMD (p = 0.019). Both groups of BD patients exhibited significant deficits in initiation/inhibition, but only BD patients with FHMD had deficits in verbal fluency, both compared to HC. There were no associations between social skills questionnaire scores and measures of cognitive function. Conclusion: Euthymic BD patients have lower social skills and executive function performance than HC. The presence of FHMD among BD patients is specifically associated with deficits in conversational and social performance skills, in addition to deficits in verbal fluency. Both characteristics might be associated with a common genetically determined pathophysiological substrate.

Based on the theory of transformative agency conceptualized in a multi-level governance context, we build on recent novel inter- and transdisciplinary research in Brazil to explore the opportunities for transformation in the dynamic, complex, and multi-level field of ocean governance. We focus this analysis on three transformation processes toward developing a socially and ecologically coherent marine protected area network as the core of a marine spatial planning process for enhanced ecosystem-based polycentric governance of the country's Exclusive Economic Zone. The findings illuminate leverage points for achieving (much needed) transformation in Brazilian ocean governance and potentially beyond. These include: connecting transformative actions into coherent narratives and testing strategic advice derived from theories of transformative agency to promote regime shifts in ocean governance systems; setting of more ambitious social mobilization targets; fostering orchestration of knowledge-networks considering multiple issues, territorial and institutional levels; implementing institutional learning experiments; supporting transformational trajectories toward co-evolutionary, polycentric, ecosystem- and area-based ocean governance systems; and pursuing gradual, incremental structural understanding of a given knowledge network field as a major driver of catalyzing transformative change. Hereby, this article advances understanding of how to better navigate the transformation toward enhanced sustainability in an important part of the Atlantic and hence of our global ocean.

Goniopsis cruentata is a common semi-terrestrial crab in Brazilian mangroves and an important fishery resource for traditional communities in the northeastern Brazilian coast. Aiming to contribute to the knowledge about the species, this study evaluated the carapace width and weight growth curves, the relative growth of weight versus carapace width, and the temporal variation of gonadosomatic and hepatosomatic indices for the species. A total of 524 crabs were collected in a mangrove area of Ubatuba municipality, state of São Paulo. The growth-curves parameters and longevity (tmax) were estimated for males (CW∞=50.6 mm, WE=56.4 g, k=2.24, t0=0.003631502 year-1, tmax=1.3 years) and females (CW∞=50.7 mm, WE∞=58.8 g, k=2.50, t0=0.003247209 year-1, tmax=1.2 years). The age at onset of sexual maturity was 0.23 years for both genders. The weight-growth model was isometric for the immature developmental stages and allometric negative for adults. The species exhibited a continuous reproduction, with breeding peaks in spring and summer months. The weight dynamics of gonads and hepatopancreas were not clearly related. The growth and reproductive patterns indicated that Goniopsis cruentata has a life-history that prioritizes reproduction instead of survival. The species exhibited some of the highest growth rates and lowest longevity estimates reported for brachyuran species in Brazil.

The aim of the present study was to determine the size at sexual maturity in the freshwater crab Dilocarcinus pagei Stimpson, 1861, from a population located in Mendonça, state of São Paulo, Brazil. The crabs were sampled monthly (July 2005 to June 2007), at Barra Mansa reservoir. The specimens were captured manually or in sieves passed through the aquatic vegetation. The crabs were captured and separated by sex based on morphology of the pleon and on the number of pleopods. The following dimensions were measured: carapace width (CW); carapace length (CL); propodus length (PL); and abdomen width (AW). The morphological analysis of the gonads was used to identify and categorize individuals according to their stage of development. The morphological maturity was estimated based on the analysis of relative growth based on the allometric equation y = ax b. The gonadal maturity was based on the morphology of the gonads by the method CW50 which indicates the size at which 50% of the individuals in the population showed gonads morphologically mature to reproduction. The organophosphate temephos has been the main insecticide used against larvae of the dengue and yellow fever mosquito (Aedes aegypti) in Brazil since the mid-1980s. Reports of resistance date back to 1995; however, no systematic reports of widespread temephos resistance have occurred to date. As resistance investigation is paramount for strategic decision-making by health officials, our objective here was to investigate the spatial and temporal spread of temephos resistance in Ae. aegypti in Brazil for the last 12 years using discriminating temephos concentrations and the bioassay protocols of the World Health Organization. The mortality results obtained were subjected to spatial analysis for distance interpolation using semi-variance models to generate maps that depict the spread of temephos resistance in Brazil since 1999. The problem has been expanding. Since 2002-2003, approximately half the country has exhibited mosquito populations resistant to temephos. The frequency of temephos resistance and, likely, control failures, which start when the insecticide mortality level drops below 80%, has increased even further since 2004. Few parts of Brazil are able to achieve the target 80% efficacy threshold by 2010/2011, resulting in a significant risk of control failure by temephos in most of the country. The widespread resistance to temephos in Brazilian Ae. aegypti populations greatly compromise effective mosquito control efforts using this insecticide and indicates the urgent need to identify alternative insecticides aided by the preventive elimination of potential mosquito breeding sites.

Objective: Unaffected relatives of bipolar disorder (BD) patients have been investigated for the identification of endophenotypes in an attempt to further elucidate the pathophysiology of the disease. Brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) is considered to be implicated in the pathophysiology of BD, but its role as an endophenotype has been poorly studied. We investigated abnormal serum BDNF levels in BD patients, in their unaffected relatives, and in healthy controls. Methods: BDNF levels were obtained from 25 DSM-IV bipolar I disorder patients, 23 unaffected relatives, and 27 healthy controls. All BD patients were in remission. The unaffected subjects were first-degree relatives of the proband who had no lifetime DSM-IV diagnosis of axis I disorder. BDNF serum levels were determined by sandwich ELISA using monoclonal BDNF-specific antibodies. Results: There were no statistical differences in BDNF levels among BD patients, relatives, and healthy controls. Conclusion: Serum BDNF levels may not indicate high genetic risk for BD, possibly acting as state markers rather than trait markers of the disease.

OBJECTIVE: In bone injury, repair results in local increased vascularity and bone marrow remodeling. Characterizing the vascular and metabolic imaging patterns of the proximal femur following an intertrochanteric osteotomy may help clinicians decide proper management of the patient. Our objective was to measure Doppler sonography and scintigraphy interval changes in the proximal femur following intertrochanteric osteotomy and compare imaging and histomorphometric measurements in the late post-operative stage (6 weeks after surgery) in a rabbit model of bone injury. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Both hips of 12 adult rabbits were imaged with power Doppler sonography and scintigraphy prior to and after (7 days and 6 weeks) unilateral osteotomy. Accuracy of the imaging methods was evaluated using hip operative status and histomorphometric results (vascular fractional area and number of vessels per area unit) as reference standard measures. RESULTS: A significant difference in the mean number of pixels was noted between operated and non-operated femura in late post-operative power Doppler examinations (P=0.049). Although without reaching statistical significance, the AUC of Doppler measurements (AUC=0.99) was numerically greater than the AUC of scintigraphy measurements (AUC=0.857±0.099) (P=0.15) in differentiating proximal femura with regard to their fractional vascular areas in the late post-operative stage. In contrast, scintigraphy tended to perform better (AUC=0.984±0.022) than Doppler ultrasound (AUC=0.746±0.131) to demonstrate the vascularity intensity per area unit (P=0.07) in the late stage. CONCLUSION: Our results warrant further investigation to determine the value of different imaging modalities for assessment of pathologic changes following hip surgery. Power Doppler sonography demonstrated larger AUCs (representing higher accuracy) for the discrimination of vascular fractional areas and scintigraphy, for discrimination of the number of vessels per area unit.OBJETIVO: Regeneração em casos de lesão óssea resulta em aumento da vascularização local e remodelamento da medula óssea adjacente. A caracterização imagenológica de padrões vasculares e metabólicos no fêmur proximal após uma osteotomia intertrocantérica pode auxiliar ortopedistas a decidirem qual a terapêutica mais apropriada. O objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar as alterações temporais observadas por ultra-sonografia Doppler e cintilografia no fêmur proximal após a realização de uma osteotomia intertrocantérica; e comparar achados imagenológicos e histomorfométricos no estágio pós-operatório tardio (6 semanas após a cirurgia) num modelo animal de lesão óssea. MATERIAIS AND MÉTODOS: Ambos os quadris de 12 coelhos adultos foram examinados por ultra-sonografia power Doppler e cintilografia antes e após (7 dias e 6 semanas) uma osteotomia unilateral. A acurácia dos métodos de imagem foi avaliada usando-se o status operatório dos quadris and os resultados histomorfométricos (área vascular fracional e número de vasos/unidade de área) como medidas de referência. RESULTADOS: Uma diferença significativa foi observada entre o número médio de pixels presentes no fêmur proximal operado e não-operado ao exame de power Doppler obtido no estágio pós-operatório tardio (P=0.049). Embora ser atingir significância estatística, a área abaixo da curva ("area-under-the-curve") dos exames de power Doppler (AUC=0.99) for numericamente superior à área abaixo da curva dos exames de cintilografia (AUC= 0.857±0.099) (P=0.15) para diferenciar fêmures proximais com relação a suas áreas vasculares fracionais no estágio pós-operatório tardio. Ao contrário, a cintilografia tendeu a apresentar uma "performance" diagnóstica superior (AUC=0.984±0.022) em relação ao Doppler (AUC=0.746±0.131) para demonstrar a quantidade de vasos por unidade de área (P=0.07) no estágio tardio. CONCLUSÃO: Nossos resultados despertam a importância de continuar-se investigando o valor de diferentes métodos de imagem para se avaliar achados patológicos após a realização de cirurgias do quadril. A ultra-sonografia power Doppler demonstrou maiores áreas abaixo da curva (representando maior acurácia) para discriminar áreas vasculares fracionais e cintilografia, para discriminar quantidade de vasos/unidade de área.

As principais medidas de controle adotadas foram tratamentos sucessivos com oxamniquine e aplicações de niclosamida em coleções hídricas. A prevalência da infecção pelo Schistosoma mansoni nos primeiros quatro municípios, que inicialmente estava entre 18 e 32%, diminuiu abruplamente após a primeira intervenção (1984/85) e permaneceu em níveis inferiores aos iniciais até a última avaliação realizada (1990/94); tendência semelhante foi observada para a proporção de caramujos infectados. Nestes municípios, a proporção de localidades sem a infecção ou com prevalências inferiores a 5% aumentou em detrimento daquelas com níveis mais altos de prevalência. Nos dois outros municípios, com prevalências iniciais inferiores a 5 %, nãoforam observadas mudanças substanciais nos indicadores endêmicos; a relação custo benefício do programa nos últimos municípios deve ser avaliada e as prioridades redirecionadas para erradicar as áreas focais e prevenir a expansão para áreas indenes. Os autores chamam a atenção para as dificuldades a longo prazo de um programa de controle fundamentado em tratamentos sucessivos. Informações sobre os fatores determinantes da infecção pelo S. mansoni em cada localidade, ou em conjunto de localidades semelhantes, permitiriam a elaboração de medidas complementares ao tratamento mais duradouras e menos dependentes da contínua utilização deste.

Informações sobre os fatores determinantes da infecção pelo S. mansoni em cada localidade, ou em conjunto de localidades semelhantes, permitiriam a elaboração de medidas complementares ao tratamento mais duradouras e menos dependentes da contínua utilização deste.An evaluation of the control program on schistosomiasis (PCE/PCDEN) was performed in the region of São Francisco river in Minas Gerais. The study area comprises six municipalities, with 130,000 inhabitants and 916 localities situated in an area with 10,722 km² . The activities initiated in 1983-85 in four municipalities and in 1987 in the other two. The main measures of control were repeated treatment with oxamniquine and use of niclosamide. The prevalence of infection by Schistosoma mansoni in the first four municipalities, that was initially around 18 and 32%, dropped abruptly after the first intervention (1983/85) and remained in levels below the initial ones until the last assessment (1990-94); similar trends were observed for the proportion of infected snails. In these municipalities, the proportion of localities without infection or with prevalence below 5 % increased in relation to those with higher prevalence. In the other two municipalities, with initial prevalence below 5%, there were no substantial changes in S. mansoni prevalence or proportion of infected snails; the cost benefit of the program in these municipalities need to be assessed and the priorities redirected to eradicate focal areas and prevent spread to non infected localities. The authors call attention to the difficulties in the long term of a control program based on repeated treatments. Information on factors associated with S. mansoni infection in each locality, or in groups of similar localities, would allow to develop additional measures to treatment that could last longer and be less dependent on the continuous use of chemotherapy.

Embora o estado maníaco seja a condição definidora do diagnóstico de transtorno bipolar, o estado depressivo é a condição sintomática mais frequente na vida do paciente e o responsável pela maior parte da incapacitação e sofrimento gerados ao portador de transtorno bipolar (Goodwin & Jamison, 2007). Em um estudo de seguimento de 10 anos, pacientes com transtorno bipolar tipo I estiveram deprimidos em 31% do tempo, mais do que em mania (9%) ou em estados mistos (9%) (Judd et al., 2003a). Pacientes com transtorno bipolar tipo II estiveram em depressão em 50,3% do tempo, muito mais do que em hipomania (1,3%) (Judd et al., 2003b). Cerca de 50% dos pacientes com transtorno bipolar tem um episódio depressivo como a primeira manifestação da doença, e os episódios depressivos podem ser crônicos em 20% dos pacientes e serem mais refratários ao tratamento do que episódios maníacos ou hipomaníacos (Yatham et al., 2005). A depressão bipolar, seja o episódio depressivo, sejam os sintomas subsindrômicos, contribui ainda com grande parte da perda de funcionalidade e qualidade de vida do paciente com transtorno bipolar (Goodwin & Jamison, 2007).

O balão intra-aórtico é um dispositivo de assistência circulatória mecânica utilizado nos casos de falência ventricular per-operatória. Neste estudo foram seguidos todos os pacientes submetidos a inserção de balão intra-aórtico durante 22 meses, no Instituto do Coração do Hospital das Clínicas da Faculdade de Medicina da Universidade de São Paulo (InCor). Apesar de não conseguirmos demonstrar evidência estatisticamente significativa de mortalidade entre os dados comparados (tipo de operação, levando-se em conta urgência, idade, sexo, presença de problemas médicos, classe funcional, função cardíaca, tempo de pinçamento da aorta, tipo de circulação extracorpórea, suporte e complicações), o estudo demonstrou o universo de pacientes em nossa Instituição submetidos ao procedimento.Intra-aortic balloon pump is a cardiac assist device developed to help in recovery from postcardiotomy heart failure. All patients submitted to intra-aortic balloon pump were followed prospectively at the Instituto do Coração do Hospital das Clínicas da Faculdade de Medicina da Universidade de São Paulo-InCor over a period of 22 months. Although we did not find statistically significant evidence of correlation between mortality and patient data (Surgery done, emergency or not, redo or not, age, gender, medical problem, functional class, cardiac function, clamp, bypass, and support time and complications) the evaluation showed our patient universe in the InCor Institute.

A análise epidemiológica da malária em Minas Gerais mostra a necessidade de divulgação permanente da situação da transmissão da doença, de forma a contribuir para a suspeita clínica em casos febris e para o diagnóstico precoce. A divulgação das informações técnicas sobre a malária visa ao melhor desempenho dos serviços de saúde locais, a fim de controlar os casos detectados e diminuir as taxas de morbi-mortalidade. Considera-se ser importante a manutenção de sistema organizado e ativo de vigilância epidemiológica de malária, mesmo em áreas endêmicas.Epidemiological analysis of malaria in the State of Minas Gerais, Brazil, shows the need for permanent reporting of the endemic-related data in order to maintain clinical suspicion of the infection in any febrile patient. Moreover, it increases the possibility of early aetiological diagnosis. Such reporting aims at improving performance of the local health system. It is important to maintain a well-organized malaria epidemiological surveillance system even in non-endemic areas.

O método Lattice-Boltzmann (LB) tem sido utilizado como um modelo alternativo para a simulação computacional da dinâmica de fluidos regida pelas equações de Navier-Stokes. É fundamentado na equação de transporte de Boltzmann, que serve como base da teoria cinética. Devido ao seu grande potencial para a análise de problemas com geometrias complexas, tem sido amplamente aplicado para a descrição de escoamentos de fluidos com um ou mais componentes em meios porosos, principalmente para o estudo de fenômenos interfaciais. Neste trabalho, um modelo LB com potencial de interação entre partículas foi utilizado para a modelagem da interface líquido-vapor. Este método possibilita a simulação de equilíbrio de fases através de uma equação de estado que possui o comportamento semelhante à equação de van der Waals. O método também permite a inclusão de termos de interação entre partículas distintas, de modo que as interfaces líquido-sólido e vapor-sólido podem ser facilmente simuladas. Alguns resultados de simulação são apresentados para problemas que envolvem a transição de fase líquido-vapor, a coexistência de uma gota líquida com seu vapor e a molhabilidade de superfícies sólidas. Adicionalmente, o método é aplicado para o problema dinâmico de uma torneira gotejante. Os resultados obtidos mostram que o método pode ser utilizado para simulação de uma ampla variedade de sistemas complexos com relação às interfaces fluido-fluido e fluido-sólido.

ABSTRACT This study describes the reproductive and recruitment patterns of the swimming crab Achelous spinimanus (Latreille, 1819) in the Ubatuba region of the northern coast of São Paulo, Brazil. Crabs were captured monthly from January 1998 to December 1999 in 18 sites located in three bays (Ubatumirim, Ubatuba, and Mar Virado), using a commercial fishing boat. In each sampling area, bottom temperature, salinity, and organic matter content were recorded. A total of 1,911 individuals were captured: 350 adult males, 475 non-ovigerous adult females, 584 adult ovigerous females, and 502 immature individuals. Reproductive females were more abundant in deeper areas; this migration might be a strategy to improve larval dispersion and survival. Ovigerous females were found year-round, indicating a continuous reproduction, and their abundance was positively correlated with temperature. During the 2-year survey, crabs with all gonadal development stages were found. We can infer that this region provides suitable resources for the development of A. spinimanus.
