Crop yield losses have escalated worldwide due to extreme and/or prolonged drought periods as well as insufficient irrigation. In the cold and arid regions of northern China, the difficulty of straw decomposition is a regional problem, which is undoubtedly aggravated by the increasingly serious drought. Thus, the combination of a reasonable grain feed rotation mode and tillage mode of straw returning is an effective measure to solve this problem. This study set up a grain forage rotation (in the first year, it is used for grain production, and the straw is returned to the field after the grains are harvested; when the entire plant is harvested in the second year, it is used as feed) and two treatments for straw returning and no straw returning to the land characterized by two different water degresses (include drought stress and normal irrigation). To clarify the impact of returning straw to the field on the soil improvement and drought tolerance of various maize varieties, the effects of straw returning on the agronomic traits, hormones, osmotic adjustment substance content, whole plant fresh weight, and dry weight of six different maize varieties (MC703, A2636, DK 159, ZQ 1, 303 × 178, and ZJ 330) under drought stress were analyzed. The data showed the following: (1) After straw returning, the soil moisture content increased by 3.55–14.70% and the soil bulk density decreased by 0.73–5.23% under the drought stress treatment, and the soil physical condition became closer to the ideal value. (2) After straw returning, the plant height, ear height, stem diameter, fresh weight, and dry weight of the maize whole plant under the drought stress treatment increased by 0.95–7.70%, 4.70–15.71%, 0.31–9.33%, 2.67–36.23%, and 3.72–38.60%, respectively. (3) After straw returning, the abscisic acid, ethylene, soluble sugar, and soluble protein in the leaves under the drought stress treatment decreased by 7.92–21.42%, 8.03–3.37%, 0.63–22.98%, and 2.37–9.17%, respectively. Straw returning significantly alleviated the damage caused by drought stress to the growth and development of maize, and promoted the growth and development of maize under the drought treatment. The results of this study provide a theoretical basis for a high and stable yield of grain crops in arid areas.

In investigating the mechanical properties and chloride corrosion resistance of all-light shale ceramsite concrete (ALSCC), samples of ALSCC20–ALSCC45 with a compressive strength of C20–C45 were individually prepared. The compressive strength, split tensile strength, and elastic modulus of ALSCC were analyzed. Additionally, the chloride salt corrosion resistance of ALSCC was assessed by examining chloride ion penetration depth, steel corrosion rate, and compressive strength after ALSCC30 corrosion. Furthermore, the microstructure of ALSCC hydration products was observed using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Results indicate that as the strength grade increases, the water–cement ratio decreases, and the internal structure becomes denser, thereby improving the mechanical and corrosion resistance properties of ALSCC. Notably, the chloride corrosion resistance of ALSCC surpasses that of ordinary concrete. SEM images reveal that the hydration of ceramsite with Ca(OH)2 in concrete generates Ca[Al(OH)4]2 precipitation and C–S–H gel, which enhances internal filling and improves chloride corrosion resistance. Furthermore, based on the results of the ALSCC30 corrosion test, a calculation model for predicting compressive strength in a chloride environment was proposed. This model effectively predicts the compressive strength of ALSCC under chloride exposure conditions.

This study proposes a form of concrete-filled steel tube column with a multiple-chamber round-ended cross-section (M-CFST). Longitudinal and transverse stiffening ribs divide the circular-ended section into different chambers, strengthening the steel tube’s confinement effect on the core concrete and improving the component’s seismic performance. A three-dimensional finite element (FE) solid model of the M-CFST is created by employing the FE software ABAQUS. Quasi-static analysis is conducted to investigate the influence of parameters, such as chamber arrangement, aspect ratio, and axial compression ratio, on flexural hysteresis performance. Moreover, the failure modes, hysteresis curves, skeleton curves, strain development, and energy dissipation of the components are analyzed. The results show the following: (1) The FE model presented in this study can simulate the quasi-static behavior of CFST columns accurately, and the calculated results are in good agreement with the measured values. (2) The seismic performance of the composite column is excellent, with a large number of chambers leading to a robust hysteresis curve for the composite columns, resulting in increased bearing capacity and energy dissipation capacity. However, the energy dissipation performance of the specimen with a two-chamber arrangement is slightly lower than that with a single-chamber arrangement. (3) The results of the finite element analysis suggest that the long and short sides of the CFST columns with a large length–width ratio should be arranged to be relatively close in length.
