Isoindigo (IID)-based non-fullerene acceptors, known for their broad absorption spectra and high charge carrier mobilities, play a crucial role in organic photovoltaics. In this study, two A−DA’D−A type unfused ring acceptors (URAs), IDC8CP-IC and IDC6CP-IC, were designed and synthesized using cyclopentadithiophene (CPDT) and IID core units, each functionalized with different alkyl chains (2-hexyldecyl and 2-octyldodecyl), through an atom- and step-efficient direct C–H arylation (DACH) method. Both URAs, despite the absence of non-covalent conformation locking between CPDT and IID, demonstrated favorable molecular planarity, broad absorption ranges, low band gaps, and high molar absorption coefficients. Notably, IDC6CP-IC exhibited stronger intermolecular charge transfer and J-aggregation. An organic solar cell (OSC) device based on IDC6CP-IC achieved a power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 3.10%, with a broad photoresponse range extending from 400 to 900 nm. This study highlights the significant impact of alkyl chain engineering on material synthesis, photoelectric properties, and corresponding device performance. Furthermore, DACH is shown to be a promising approach for synthesizing IID-based URAs with near-infrared (NIR) absorption, making it an excellent candidate for bulk heterojunction (BHJ) OSC applications.

A family of isoindigo derivatives (OII1-OII8) with D-A'-A-A'-D and D-A-D electronic architecture was designed and synthesized to study their optical and electronic properties for photovoltaic applications. These small molecules integrate isoindigo as an electron acceptor, cyano-containing π-bridges, and diverse donor groups, including triphenylamine, carbazole, and fluorene. The synthesis involved aldol condensation, direct arylation, and Suzuki coupling. Theoretical (DFT/TDDFT) and experimental analyses revealed intense absorption bands and tunable bandgaps (1.61–1.94 eV). Experimental validation of HOMO-LUMO levels and photovoltaic performance was conducted, with OSC devices achieving Voc values up to 0.73 V in preliminary studies. A strong correlation was observed between theoretical predictions and experimental electronic parameters for OII3 and OII4 with D-A'-A-A'-D architectures. This work demonstrates the potential of isoindigo-based molecules for organic solar cells.

Abstract The development of n‐type organic semiconductors has evolved significantly slower in comparison to that of p‐type organic semiconductors mainly due to the lack of electron‐deficient building blocks with stability and processability. However, to realize a variety of organic optoelectronic devices, high‐performance n‐type polymer semiconductors are essential. Herein, conjugated microporous polymers (CMPs) comprising isoindigo acceptor units linked to benzene or pyrene donor units (BI and PI) showing n‐type semiconducting behavior are reported. In addition, considering the challenges of deposition of a continuous and homogeneous thin film of CMPs for accurate Hall measurements, a plasma‐assisted fabrication technique is developed to yield uniform thin films. The fully conjugated 2D networks in PI‐ and BI‐CMP films display high electron mobility of 6.6 and 3.5 cm2 V−1 s−1, respectively. The higher carrier concentration in PI results in high conductivity (5.3 mS cm−1). Both experimental and computational studies are adequately combined to investigate structure–property relations for this intriguing class of materials in the context of organic electronics.

In this review, the data on the application of isoindigo derivatives in the chemistry of functional materials are analyzed and summarized. These bisheterocycles can be used in the creation of organic solar cells, sensors, lithium ion batteries as well as in OFET and OLED technologies. The potentials of the use of polymer structures based on isoindigo as photoactive component in the photoelectrochemical reduction of water, as matrix for MALDI spectrometry and in photothermal cancer therapy are also shown. Data published over the past 5 years, including works published at the beginning of 2021, are given.

Abstract Simultaneous photothermal therapy (PTT) and photodynamic therapy (PDT) is beneficial for enhanced cancer therapy due to the synergistic effect. Conventional materials developed for synergistic PTT/PDT are generally multicomponent agents that need complicated preparation procedures and be activated by multiple laser sources. The emerging monocomponent diketopyrrolopyrrole (DPP)-based conjugated small molecular agents enable dual PTT/PDT under a single laser irradiation, but suffer from low singlet oxygen quantum yield, which severely restricts the therapeutic efficacy. Herein, we report acceptor-oriented molecular design of a donor–acceptor–donor (D–A–D) conjugated small molecule (IID-ThTPA)-based phototheranostic agent, with isoindigo (IID) as selective acceptor and triphenylamine (TPA) as donor. The strong D–A strength and narrow singlet–triplet energy gap endow IID-ThTPA nanoparticles (IID-ThTPA NPs) high mass extinction coefficient (18.2 L g−1 cm−1), competitive photothermal conversion efficiency (35.4%), and a dramatically enhanced singlet oxygen quantum yield (84.0%) comparing with previously reported monocomponent PTT/PDT agents. Such a high PTT/PDT performance of IID-ThTPA NPs achieved superior tumor cooperative eradicating capability in vitro and in vivo.

Isoindigo (IID) has been widely used as strong acceptor unit (A) to construct narrow bandgap polymers in organic field effect transistors (OFETs) and organic solar cells (OSCs). Combing with IID, we chose benzodithiophene (BDT) as the donor unit (D) and thieno [3,2-b]thiophene (TT) as the π bridge to construct a new type of D-π-A polymer PE70. Based on PE70, we adopt the chlorination strategy to fine-tune photoelectric characteristics and film morphology, and then developed PE74 and PE75. By blending with non-fullerene acceptor (NFA) Y6, device based on PE74 with chloride substitution on the BDT unit showed increasing photovoltaic performance. In addition, further chlorine substitution on the IID (PE75) would greatly reduce the non-radiative voltage loss (ΔV3), and the distorted molecular conformation also took responsible for the excessive recombination. As results, PE74:Y6-based device achieves a power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 11.06% with open-circuit voltage (VOC) of 0.76 ​V, which are higher than those of PE70:Y6 (PCE of 10.40% and VOC of 0.72 ​V) and PE75: Y6-based device (PCE of 6.24% and VOC of 0.84 ​V). This work demonstrates the regularity of the photovoltaic performance caused by chlorination strategy in polymer in the non-fullerene OSC devices, which provide important insights into high-performance photovoltaic materials.

Over the last decade isoindigo derivatives have attracted much attention due to their high potential in pharmacy and in the chemistry of materials. In addition, isoindigo derivatives can be modified to form supramolecular structures with tunable morphologies for the use in drug delivery. Amphiphilic long-chain dialkylated isoindigos have the ability to form stable solid nanoparticles via a simple nanoprecipitation technique. Their self-assembly was investigated using tensiometry, dynamic light scattering, spectrophotometry, and fluorometry. The critical association concentrations and aggregate sizes were measured. The hydrophilic–lipophilic balance of alkylated isoindigo derivatives strongly influences aggregate morphology. In the case of short-chain dialkylated isoindigo derivatives, supramolecular polymers of 200 to 700 nm were formed. For long-chain dialkylated isoindigo derivatives, micellar aggregates of 100 to 200 nm were observed. Using micellar surfactant water-soluble forms of monosubstituted 1-hexadecylisoindigo as well as 1,1′-dimethylisoindigo were prepared for the first time. The formation of mixed micellar structures of different types in micellar anionic surfactant solutions (sodium dodecyl sulfate) was determined. These findings are of practical importance and are of potential interest for the design of drug delivery systems and new nanomaterials.

Two novel side-chain conjugated polymers, PTBT-TID and PTBT-TTID, based on the new synthetic thiophene-benzne-thiophene (TBT) unit, side-chain isoindigo (ID) unit, and the introduced thiophene π-bridge, have been designed and synthesized. The photophysical, electrochemical and photovoltaic properties of the two polymers have been systematically investigated. The two polymers possess relatively good solubility as well as excellent thermal stability up to 380°C, and all of the polymer solar cell (PSC) devices based on the two polymers obtain high open circuit voltage (Voc) of about 0.8 V. The polymer solar cells based on the polymer PTBT-TID show relatively higher efficiencies than the PTBT-TTID-based ones, due to the broader absorption spectrum, a relatively higher hole mobility, a lower HOMO (the highest occupied molecular orbital) energy level, a stronger IPCE (the incident photon to current conversion efficiency) response and a better microphase separation, Consequently, the device based on PTBT-TID:PC61BM (1:2, by weight) gives the best power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 2.04%, with a short-circuit current density (Jsc) of 5.39 mA·cm–2, an open-circuit voltage (Voc) of 0.83 V, and a fill factor (FF) of 0.45.

Two solution-processable small organic molecules, (E)-6,6′-bis(4-(diphenylamino)phenyl)-1,1′-bis(2-ethylhexyl)-(3,3′-biindolinylidene)-2,2′-dione (coded as S10) and (E)-6,6′-di(9H-carbazol-9-yl)-1,1′-bis(2-ethylhexyl)-(3,3′-biindolinylidene)-2,2′-dione (coded as S11) were successfully designed, synthesized and fully characterized. S10 and S11 are based on a donor-acceptor-donor structural motif and contain a common electron accepting moiety, isoindigo, along with different electron donating functionalities, triphenylamine and carbazole, respectively. Ultraviolet-visible absorption spectra revealed that the use of triphenylamine donor functionality resulted in an enhanced intramolecular charge transfer transition and reduction of optical band gap, when compared with its carbazole analogue. Both of these materials were designed to be donor semiconducting components, exerted excellent solubility in common organic solvents, showed excellent thermal stability, and their promising optoelectronic properties encouraged us to scrutinize charge-carrier mobilities using solution-processable organic field effect transistors. Hole mobilities of the order of 2.2 × 10−4 cm2/Vs and 7.8 × 10−3 cm2/Vs were measured using S10 and S11 as active materials, respectively.

A selected set of substituted pyridone-annelated isoindigos 3a–f has been synthesized via interaction of 5- and 6-substituted oxindoles 2a–f with 6-ethyl-1,2,9-trioxopyrrolo[3,2-f]quinoline-8-carboxylic acid (1) in acetic acid at reflux. Among these isoindigos, the 5'-chloro and 5'-bromo derivatives 3b and 3d show strong and selective antiproliferative activities against a panel of human hematological and solid tumor cell-lines, but not against noncancerous cells, suggesting their potential use as anticancer agents. In all the tested cell lines, compound 3b was a 25%–50% more potent inhibitor of cell growth than 3d, suggesting the critical role of the substitution at 5'-position of the benzo-ring E. The IC50 values after 48 hours incubation with the 5'-chloro compound 3b were 6.60 µM in K562, 8.21 µM in THP-1, 8.97 µM in HepG2, 11.94 µM in MCF-7 and 14.59 µM in Caco-2 cancer cells, while the IC50 values in noncancerous HEK-293 and L-929 were 30.65 µM and 40.40 µM, respectively. In addition, compound 3b induced higher levels apoptosis in K562 cells than 3d, as determined by annexin V/7-AAD flowcytometry analysis. Therefore, further characterization of the antitproliferative mechanisms of compounds 3b and 3d may provide a novel chemotherapeutic agents.
