Objectives: The evidence on water intake in the prevention of kidney function decline is scarce at population level in well-being individuals at high cardiovascular risk. Therefore, we aimed to longitudinally evaluate the associations between total water intake and subtypes and kidney function, through estimated-Glomerular Filtration Rate (eGFR). Methods: Three-year prospective analysis conducted in 1986 older adults (aged 55–75 year) with overweight/obesity and metabolic syndrome from the PREDIMED-Plus study. Water intake was assessed using validated beverage and food frequency questionnaires. Serum creatinine-based eGFR (SCr-based eGFR; ml/min/1.73 m2) was estimated using the CKD-EPI equation at baseline, one-year and 3-years of follow-up. Mixed-effects linear regression models were fitted to evaluate the associations between baseline total water intake and subtypes, and SCr-based eGFR over 3-years of follow-up. Results: Participants in the highest baseline tertile of total water intake, plain water and water from all fluids showed a lower decrease in SCr-based eGFR after 3-years of follow-up, compared to those in the lowest tertile. Participants with the highest tap water consumption showed a lower SCr-based eGFR decline after 1-year and 3-years of follow-up, in comparerd to participants in the lowest intake category (T3 vs. T1: β: 1.4 ml/min/1.73 m2; 95%CI: 0.5–2.3, β: 1.0; 95%CI: 0.1–2.0, respectively). Conclusions: Plain water rather than other water sources, and especially tap water, was associated with lower kidney function decline assessed through eGFR over 3-years of follow-up, in older individuals at high cardiovascular risk. Interactions of cosmic ray protons, atomic nuclei, and electrons in the interstellar medium in the inner part of the Milky Way produce a γ-ray flux from the Galactic Ridge. If the γ-ray emission is dominated by proton and nuclei interactions, a neutrino flux comparable to the γ-ray flux is expected from the same sky region.Data collected by the ANTARES neutrino telescope are used to constrain the neutrino flux from the Galactic Ridge in the 1-100 TeV energy range. Neutrino events reconstructed both as tracks and showers are considered in the analysis and the selection is optimized for the search of an excess in the region |l|

Resumen: Objetivo: Desarrollar recomendaciones basadas en la mejor evidencia y experiencia sobre el manejo de pacientes con psoriasis durante la edad fértil, el embarazo, el posparto y la lactancia. Métodos: Se siguió la metodología de grupos nominales y Delphi. Se seleccionó un grupo director de expertos (12 dermatólogos —de los cuales 2 fueron los coordinadores—, 1 reumatólogo, 2 ginecólogos). Se realizó una revisión sistemática de la literatura sobre fertilidad, embarazo, posparto y lactancia en pacientes con psoriasis. Con esta información los coordinadores generaron una serie de recomendaciones preliminares. Todo ello se presentó y discutió con el resto de expertos en una reunión de grupo nominal donde se definió el alcance, los usuarios, los apartados del documento, y donde se generaron las recomendaciones definitivas. El grado de acuerdo con las recomendaciones se votó siguiendo la metodología Delphi, que se extendió a 51 dermatólogos más, según una escala de 1 (total desacuerdo) a 10 (total acuerdo), definiéndose el acuerdo como una puntuación ≥ 7 por al menos el 70% de los participantes. El nivel de evidencia y el grado de recomendación se clasificaron según el modelo del Center for Evidence Based Medicine de Oxford. El documento completo final fue aprobado por el panel de expertos. Resultados: Se generaron 23 recomendaciones sobre el periodo pre-concepcional (fertilidad y anticoncepción), el embarazo (planificación, manejo farmacológico y seguimiento) y la lactancia (manejo y seguimiento). Todas las recomendaciones menos una alcanzaron el nivel de acuerdo definido. Conclusiones: En los pacientes con psoriasis en edad fértil estas recomendaciones pueden mejorar el manejo, los resultados y el pronóstico. Abstract: Objective: To develop evidence- and experience-based recommendations for the management of psoriasis during preconception, pregnancy, postpartum, and breastfeeding. Methods: The nominal group technique and the Delphi method were used. Fifteen experts (12 dermatologists, 2 of whom were appointed coordinators; 1 rheumatologist; and 2 gynecologists) were selected to form an expert panel. Following a systematic review of the literature on fertility, pregnancy, postpartum, and breastfeeding in women with psoriasis, the coordinators drew up a series of preliminary recommendations for discussion by the panel at a nominal group meeting. The experts defined the scope, sections, and intended users of the statement and prepared a final list of recommendations. Consensus was obtained using a Delphi process in which an additional 51 dermatologists rated their level of agreement with each recommendation on a scale of 1 (total disagreement) to 10 (total agreement). Consensus was defined by a score of 7 or higher assigned by at least 70% of participants. Level of evidence and strength of recommendation were reported using the Oxford Center for Evidence-Based Medicine categories. The final statement was approved by the expert panel. Results: The resulting consensus statement includes 23 recommendations on preconception (fertility and contraception), pregnancy (planning, pharmacological management, and follow-up), and breastfeeding (management and follow-up). Consensus was achieved for all recommendations generated except one. Conclusions: These recommendations for the better management of psoriasis in women of childbearing age could improve outcomes and prognosis.

That the preservation of twentieth concrete heritage is an area scantly explored can be attributed to a lack of appreciation for such a young material. In most cases conservation is broached from a technical perspective with little regard for heritage value. Ongoing assessment of the condition of structures is the primary strategy to minimise such misguided action. This study involved characterising the condition of the concrete in a number of singular elements forming part of the Eduardo Torroja Institute for Construction Science headquarters at Madrid, Spain, a modernist compound listed by the city of Madrid as a protected asset. The in situ findings using non-destructive and laboratory techniques revealed the core concrete to be in good condition. The surface material, however, exhibits signs of durability issues calling for conservation treatments and techniques compatible with the preservation of the integrity and authenticity of this young heritage material.

This letter presents a combined measurement of the energy spectra of atmospheric νe and νμ in the energy range between ∼100 GeV and ∼50 TeV with the ANTARES neutrino telescope. The analysis uses 3012 days of detector livetime in the period 2007–2017, and selects 1016 neutrinos interacting in (or close to) the instrumented volume of the detector, yielding shower-like events (mainly from νe+ν‾e charged current plus all neutrino neutral current interactions) and starting track events (mainly from νμ+ν‾μ charged current interactions). The contamination by atmospheric muons in the final sample is suppressed at the level of a few per mill by different steps in the selection analysis, including a Boosted Decision Tree classifier. The distribution of reconstructed events is unfolded in terms of electron and muon neutrino fluxes. The derived energy spectra are compared with previous measurements that, above 100 GeV, are limited to experiments in polar ice and, for νμ, to Super-Kamiokande.

This paper studies the multiaxial fatigue behaviour of maraging steel samples produced by selective laser melting. Hollow cylindrical specimens with transverse circular holes are subjected to different in-phase bending-torsion loading scenarios. Fatigue crack initiation sites and fatigue crack angles are predicted from the first principal stress field. Fatigue lifetime is computed using a straightforward approach, based on a one-parameter damage law, developed via uniaxial low-cycle fatigue tests. The cyclic plasticity at the notch-controlled process zone is accounted for by combining the equivalent strain energy density concept and the theory of critical distances within a linear-elastic framework. Regardless of the multiaxial loading scenario, experimental observations and predicted lives are very well correlated.

Neutrino detectors participate in the indirect search for the fundamental constituents of dark matter (DM) in form of weakly interacting massive particles (WIMPs). In WIMP scenarios, candidate DM particles can pair-annihilate into Standard Model products, yielding considerable fluxes of high-energy neutrinos. A detector like ANTARES, located in the Northern Hemisphere, is able to perform a complementary search looking towards the Galactic Centre, where a high density of dark matter is thought to accumulate. Both this directional information and the spectral features of annihilating DM pairs are entered into an unbinned likelihood method to scan the data set in search for DM-like signals in ANTARES data. Results obtained upon unblinding 3170 days of data reconstructed with updated methods are presented, which provides a larger, and more accurate, data set than a previously published result using 2101 days. A non-observation of dark matter is converted into limits on the velocity-averaged cross section for WIMP pair annihilation.

Introduction: The prevalence of Barrett's esophagus has been calculated at between 1.3 and 1.6%. There is little information with respect to this in Mexico. Aim: To determine the frequency and characteristics of Barrett's esophagus in patients that underwent endoscopy at a national referral center, within a 10-year time frame. Material and methods: The databases of the pathology and gastrointestinal endoscopy departments of the Instituto Nacional de Ciencias Médicas y Nutrición “Salvador Zubirán” were analyzed, covering the period of January 2002 to December 2012. Patients with a histologic diagnosis of Barrett's esophagus were included. The variables of age, sex, the presence of dysplasia/esophageal adenocarcinoma, Barrett's esophagus length, and follow-up were analyzed. Results: Of 43,639 upper gastrointestinal endoscopies performed, 420 revealed Barrett's esophagus, corresponding to a frequency of 9.6 patients for every 1,000 endoscopies. Of those patients, 66.9% (n = 281) were men, mean patient age ± SD was 57.2 ± 15.3 years, 223 patients (53%) presented with long-segment Barrett's esophagus, and 197 (47%) with short-segment Barrett's esophagus. Dysplasia was not present in 339 patients (80.7%). Eighty-one (19.3%) patients had some grade of dysplasia or cancer: 48/420 (11.42%) presented with low-grade dysplasia, 20/420 (4.76%) with high-grade dysplasia, and 13/420 (3.1%) were diagnosed with esophageal cancer arising from Barrett's esophagus. Mean follow-up time was 5.6 years. Conclusions: The frequency of Barrett's esophagus was 9.6 cases for every 1,000 upper gastrointestinal endoscopies performed. Dysplasia was not documented in the majority of the patients with Barrett's esophagus and they had no histopathologic changes during follow-up. A total of 19.3% of the patients presented with dysplasia or cancer.

Introducción: La prevalencia de esófago de Barrett (EB) se ha calculado entre el 1.3 y el 1.6%. En México existen pocos datos al respecto. Objetivo: Determinar la frecuencia y características del EB en pacientes sometidos a endoscopia en un centro de referencia nacional, en un periodo de 10 años. Material y métodos: Se analizaron bases de datos de los departamentos de Patología y Endoscopia Gastrointestinal del Instituto Nacional de Ciencias Médicas y Nutrición «Salvador Zubirán» (INCMNSZ), en el periodo comprendido de enero del 2002 a diciembre del 2012. Se incluyó a pacientes con diagnóstico histológico de EB. Se analizaron edad, sexo, presencia de displasia/adenocarcinoma de esófago, longitud del EB y seguimiento. Resultados: Se realizaron 43,639 endoscopias de tubo digestivo superior, se incluyó a 420 pacientes con EB, lo que corresponde a una frecuencia de 9.6 pacientes por cada 1,000 estudios realizados. El 66.9% (n = 281) fueron hombres; la edad media ± DE fue de 57.2 ± 15.3 años; 223 pacientes (53%) presentaron EB de segmento largo y 197(47%) de segmento corto; 339 pacientes (80.7%) no presentaron displasia, 81(19.3%) tuvieron algún grado de displasia o cáncer; de estos, 48/420 (11.42%) displasia de bajo grado, 20/420 (4.76%) displasia de alto grado y 13/420 (3.1%) tuvieron el diagnóstico de cáncer esofágico originado en EB. El seguimiento promedio fue de 5.6 años. Conclusiones: La frecuencia de EB fue de 9.6 casos por cada 1,000 endoscopias de tubo digestivo superior. En la mayoría de los pacientes con EB no se documentó displasia y permanecieron sin cambios histopatológicos durante el seguimiento. El 19.3% de los pacientes presentaron displasia o cáncer.

Using data recorded with the ANTARES telescope from 2007 to 2015, a new search for dark matter annihilation in the Milky Way has been performed. Three halo models and five annihilation channels, WIMP+WIMP→bb¯,W+W−,τ+τ−,μ+μ− and νν¯, with WIMP masses ranging from 50 GeVc2 to 100 TeVc2, were considered. No excess over the expected background was found, and limits on the thermally averaged annihilation cross-section were set.

This work considers some of the main aspects involved during the period that elapsed between the validation of our degrees to the present time, which the School of Industrial Engineers of Albacete are currently under-going. One of the most disturbing factors has been teaching staff, who have been subjected to Spain’s economic circumstances. Other considerations, related to some difficulties of the re-accreditation process, have also been taken into account. Finally, we point out that although new learning methodologies were expected, the scope and the way Quality systems operate have arrived somewhat late.

A highly significant excess of high-energy astrophysical neutrinos has been reported by the IceCube Collaboration. Some features of the energy and declination distributions of IceCube events hint at a North/South asymmetry of the neutrino flux. This could be due to the presence of the bulk of our Galaxy in the Southern hemisphere. The ANTARES neutrino telescope, located in the Mediterranean Sea, has been taking data since 2007. It offers the best sensitivity to muon neutrinos produced by galactic cosmic ray interactions in this region of the sky. In this letter a search for an extended neutrino flux from the Galactic Ridge region is presented. Different models of neutrino production by cosmic ray propagation are tested. No excess of events is observed and upper limits for different neutrino flux spectral indices Γ are set. For Γ=2.4 the 90% confidence level flux upper limit at 100 TeV for one neutrino flavour corresponds to Φ01f(100 TeV)=2.0⋅10−17 GeV−1cm−2s−1sr−1. Under this assumption, at most two events of the IceCube cosmic candidates can originate from the Galactic Ridge. A simple power-law extrapolation of the Fermi-LAT flux to account for IceCube High Energy Starting Events is excluded at 90% confidence level.

A search for muon neutrinos originating from dark matter annihilations in the Sun is performed using the data recorded by the ANTARES neutrino telescope from 2007 to 2012. In order to obtain the best possible sensitivities to dark matter signals, an optimisation of the event selection criteria is performed taking into account the background of atmospheric muons, atmospheric neutrinos and the energy spectra of the expected neutrino signals. No significant excess over the background is observed and 90% C.L. upper limits on the neutrino flux, the spin-dependent and spin-independent WIMP-nucleon cross-sections are derived for WIMP masses ranging from 50 GeV to 5 TeV for the annihilation channels WIMP+WIMP→bb¯,W+W− and τ+τ−.

Dada la problemática que presentan los esmaltes antideslizantes convencionales, los cuales poseen una rugosidad superficial que dificulta la limpieza de la superficie de la pieza, se ha diseñado un esmalte antideslizante de naturaleza vitrocerámica que es resistente a las manchas y presenta una textura lisa, de tacto suave. Para ello, se han utilizado nuevas fritas de naturaleza mate y materias primas de composiciones similares, suficientemente refractarias para ser adecuadas para esmaltar piezas de gres porcelánico. El esmalte vitrocerámico así obtenido se ha caracterizado a través de varias técnicas instrumentales (fluorescencia de rayos X [FRX], microscopia electrónica de barrido [MEB], difracción de rayos X [DRX], perfilometría mecánica y medidas de microdureza) con el fin de comprobar la naturaleza de las fases cristalizadas, su morfología, la rugosidad superficial y la microdureza de la pieza acabada. Además, se ha valorado la calidad de la pieza esmaltada mediante las normativas de resistencia química, resistencia a las manchas y resistencia a la resbaladicidad. El esmalte obtenido ha desvitrificado en cristales de silicoaluminatos de calcio y bario, cumple la normativa de antideslizamiento y es resistente a las manchas, ya que presenta una rugosidad superficial similar a un esmalte no antideslizante.

Peripheral nerve regrowth is less robust than commonly assumed, particularly when it accompanies common clinical scenarios such as diabetes mellitus. Brief extracellular electrical stimulation (ES) facilitates the regeneration of peripheral nerves in part through early activation of the conditioning injury response and BDNF. Here, we explored intrinsic neuronal responses to ES to identify whether ES might impact experimental diabetes, where regeneration is attenuated. ES altered several regeneration related molecules including rises in tubulin, Shh (Sonic hedgehog) and GAP43 mRNAs. ES was associated with rises in neuronal intracellular calcium but its strict linkage to regrowth was not confirmed. In contrast, we identified PI3K–PTEN involvement, an association previously linked to diabetic regenerative impairment. Following ES there were declines in PTEN protein and mRNA both in vitro and in vivo and a PI3K inhibitor blocked its action. In vitro, isolated diabetic neurons were capable of mounting robust responsiveness to ES. In vivo, ES improved electrophysiological and behavioral indices of nerve regrowth in a chronic diabetic model of mice with pre-existing neuropathy. Regrowth of myelinated axons and reinnervation of the epidermis were greater following ES than sham stimulation. Taken together, these findings identify a role for ES in supporting regeneration during the challenges of diabetes mellitus.

Introduction: Cerebral ischaemia is one of the most common neurological diseases worldwide. Its many sequelae range from motor and sensory symptoms to cognitive decline and dementia. Animal models of cerebral ischaemia/hypoperfusion elicit effects on long term memory; however, the effects of these procedures on short term memory are not clearly understood and effects induced by alternative hypoperfusion models are completely unknown. Methods: We evaluated the effects of 2 cerebral hyperperfusion models on memory in 3-month-old male rats. Episodic memory and working memory were assessed using the new object recognition test and the spontaneous alteration test, respectively. Neurological assessment was also performed, along with an open field test to evaluate locomotor activity. Results: Rats in both hyperperfusion models displayed no cognitive changes. Rats with unilateral left-sided ligation plus temporary ligation of the right carotid tended to show slightly impaired performance on the new object recognition test on the second day after the procedure. In contrast, the group with permanent unilateral ligation tended to display alterations in working and episodic memory 9 days after the procedure, but they subsequently recovered. Conclusion: Despite these differences, both hypoperfusion groups displayed clear signs of motor impairment 2 days after the procedure, as reflected by their decreased locomotor activity during the open field test. Las múltiples secuelas abarcan desde lo motor y la sensibilidad hasta un deterioro cognitivo y la demencia. Los modelos animales de isquemia-hipoperfusión cerebral tienen su efecto sobre la memoria a largo plazo, sin embargo, aún no están claros sus efectos a corto plazo y, en el caso de algunos modelos de hipoperfusión, se desconocen por completo. Métodos: Se valoraron los efectos de 2 modelos de hipoperfusión cerebral sobre la memoria en ratas macho de 3 meses de edad. Se evaluó la memoria episódica y de trabajo empleando las pruebas de reconocimiento de objetos nuevos y alternancia espontánea, respectivamente, así como una valoración neurológica y una prueba de locomoción en una arena para campo abierto. Resultados: Se encontró que en los 2 modelos de hipoperfusión las ratas no presentan una alteración cognitiva. A pesar de que existe una tendencia en las ratas con ligadura unilateral izquierda más ligadura transitoria de la carótida derecha a presentar una leve alteración negativa en la prueba de reconocimiento de objetos nuevos al segundo día después de la oclusión, mientras que el grupo con ligadura unilateral permanente tiende a presentar alteraciones en la memoria de trabajo y episódica a los 9 días luego de la isquemia, con una posterior recuperación. Conclusión: Sin embargo hay una clara afectación motora 2 días después de la cirugía, reflejada por una disminución en la actividad locomotora en la prueba de campo abierto, en ambos grupos con hipoperfusión. Las múltiples secuelas abarcan desde lo motor y la sensibilidad hasta un deterioro cognitivo y la demencia. Los modelos animales de isquemia-hipoperfusión cerebral tienen su efecto sobre la memoria a largo plazo, sin embargo, aún no están claros sus efectos a corto plazo y, en el caso de algunos modelos de hipoperfusión, se desconocen por completo. Métodos: Se valoraron los efectos de 2 modelos de hipoperfusión cerebral sobre la memoria en ratas macho de 3 meses de edad. Se evaluó la memoria episódica y de trabajo empleando las pruebas de reconocimiento de objetos nuevos y alternancia espontánea, respectivamente, así como una valoración neurológica y una prueba de locomoción en una arena para campo abierto. Resultados: Se encontró que en los 2 modelos de hipoperfusión las ratas no presentan una alteración cognitiva. Aim of study: To determine the effect on wood from Pinus sylvestris of treatment with preservatives on mechanical properties and to establish the relation between the penetration and compression strength.Area of study: SpainMaterial and Methods: 40 samples of defect-free wood from Pinus sylvestris L. were treated with Light Organic Solvent Preservative (Vacsol Azure WR 2601) and 50 with waterborne Copper Azole (Tanalith E 3492). 40 control samples were not treated (water or preservative). Mechanical resistance to static bending, modulus of elasticity and compression strength parallel to the grain were compared with untreated wood. Regression analysis between the penetration and compression strength parallel was done with the samples treated with waterborne preservative.Main results: The results indicate that the treated wood (with either product) presents a statistically significant increase in mechanical resistance in all three mechanical characteristics. The results obtained differ from earlier studies carried out by other authors.There was no correlation between parallel compression strength and the degree of impregnation of the wood with waterborne Copper Azole . The most probable explanation for these results concerns changes in pressure during treatment.The use of untreated control samples instead of samples treated only with water is more likely to produce significant results in the mechanical resistance studies.Research highlights: Treated wood presents a statistically significant increase in MOE, modulus of rupture to static bending and parallel compression strength.There was no correlation between parallel compression strength and the degree of impregnation with waterborne preservative.Keywords: Light Organic Solvent Preservative; MOE; parallel compression; static bending; waterborne Copper Azole; wood technology.

Resumen: Introducción: El análisis instrumental de marcha (AIM) es una tecnología de uso creciente en la evaluación de trastornos motores infantiles. La evaluación de pacientes requiere una base de referencia de normalidad, pero existen pocas referencias infantiles españolas. Objetivo: Descripción de 16 variables de marcha de relevancia clínica en una muestra de referencia de escolares sanos. Estudio de sus relaciones lineales y asimetrías izquierda-derecha. Sujetos y métodos: Se midieron con AIM 16 variables de marcha en escolares sanos (n = 27, 5-13 años). Se estudiaron las asimetrías en cada variable (t de Student, muestras dependientes) y sus intervalos de confianza (95% de la media de diferencia estandarizada derecha menos izquierda, dz). Se representaron los valores y las asociaciones entre variables mediante «heatmap». Resultados: Se aportan tablas de normalidad para 16 variables del ciclo de marcha. Son significativamente asimétricos los valores medios de flexión mínima de cadera (dz: 0,25 IC del 95%, 0,11-0,39) y de máxima abducción de cadera en el balanceo (dz: -1,05 IC del 95%, –1,71; –0,27). Existen asociaciones funcionales entre las variables de marcha. Conclusiones: Presentamos una muestra de normalidad de escolares españoles donde se observan asimetrías entre los lados izquierdo y derecho y organización funcional entre sus variables. Abstract: Introduction: Instrumental gait analysis is an emerging technology used increasingly to evaluate motor disorders in children. Normal reference data is necessary in order to evaluate patients, but there are few reference resources for the Spanish paediatric population. Objective: We aim to describe the values of 16 clinically relevant gait variables in healthy Spanish schoolchildren, and identify any linear associations or left-right asymmetries. Subjects and methods: The values of 16 gait variables were determined in schoolchildren (n = 27, aged 5-13 years) using instrumental gait analysis. We analysed asymmetries for each variable (Student's t-test for dependent samples) and calculated their confidence intervals (95% of the standardised difference in right and left means [SMD]). Values and associations between variables were represented using a heat map. Results: Our project presents normal values tables for 16 variables in the gait cycle. Significant asymmetries were detected in the mean values for minimum hip flexion (SMD: 0.25 95% CI, 0.11-0.39) and peak hip abduction in swing (SMD: −1.05 95% CI: −1.71- − 0.27). Functional associations among gait variables are present. Conclusions: We present a reference dataset for Spanish school-aged children in which left-right asymmetries and functional associations may be observed for different variables. Resumen: Introducción: El análisis instrumental de marcha (AIM) es una tecnología de uso creciente en la evaluación de trastornos motores infantiles. La evaluación de pacientes requiere una base de referencia de normalidad, pero existen pocas referencias infantiles españolas. Objetivo: Descripción de 16 variables de marcha de relevancia clínica en una muestra de referencia de escolares sanos. Estudio de sus relaciones lineales y asimetrías izquierda-derecha. Sujetos y métodos: Se midieron con AIM 16 variables de marcha en escolares sanos (n = 27, 5–13 años). Se estudiaron las asimetrías en cada variable (t de Student, muestras dependientes) y sus intervalos de confianza (95% de la media de diferencia estandarizada derecha menos izquierda, dz). Se representaron los valores y las asociaciones entre variables mediante “heatmap”. Resultados: Se aportan tablas de normalidad para 16 variables del ciclo de marcha. Son significativamente asimétricos los valores medios de flexión mínima de cadera (dz: 0,25; IC del 95%: 0,11–0,39) y de máxima abducción de cadera en el balanceo (dz: −1,05; IC del 95%: −1,71, −0,27). Existen asociaciones funcionales entre las variables de marcha. Conclusiones: Presentamos una muestra de normalidad de escolares españoles donde se observan asimetrías entre los lados izquierdo y derecho y organización funcional entre sus variables. Summary: Objectives: To evaluate whether augmenting neuronal protective mechanisms might slow or arrest experimental diabetic peripheral neuropathy (DPN). DPN is one of the most common neurodegenerative disorders and is rising in prevalence. How it targets sensory neurons is uncertain; the disorder is irreversible and untreatable. We explored the intrinsic protective properties of overexpressed human HSP27 on experimental DPN. HSP27 is a small pro-survival heat shock protein that also increases axonal regeneration. Methods: Experimental diabetes was superimposed on mice overexpressing a human HSP27 transgene and its impact was evaluated on epidermal innervation, behavioral tests of sensation and electrophysiological indices of DPN. Results: Mice that overexpress human HSP27 in their sensory and motor neurons and that were made diabetic for 6 months by streptozotocin treatment were protected from a range of neuropathic abnormalities, including loss of footpad thermal sensation, mechanical allodynia, loss of epidermal innervation, and slowing of sensory conduction velocity. The protection was selective for sensory neurons in comparison to motor neurons and at 6 months provided better protection in female than male mice. Markers of RAGE-NFκB activation were attenuated by the transgene. Conclusions: The findings support the idea that diabetic polyneuropathy involves a unique, sensory-centric neurodegenerative process which can be reduced by overexpressing a single gene, an important starting point for new disease-modifying therapeutic approaches.

Este trabajo presenta el cálculo del semiperiodo o vida media de las referencias en 28 revistas españolas y anglosajonas de Biblioteconomía y Documentación siguiendo la fórmula de Burton y Kebler, durante el año 2006. Se analiza posteriormente la posible relación con los contenidos presentes en las revistas, y se extraen conclusiones sobre qué temas nucleares del área imponen básicamente dicho semiperiodo, dando lugar a lo que puede considerarse como el semiperiodo de la literatura científica en Biblioteconomía y Documentación, y señalando qué temas tienden a aumentar o disminuir dicho semiperiodo cuando están presentes en una determinada revista. De esta forma el semiperiodo podría considerarse un indicio del contenido temático de la revista.Following the formula developed by Burton and Kebler, this paper presents a calculation of the half-life of bibliographical references appearing in twenty-eight English- and Spanish-language Library and Information Science journals in the year 2006. An analysis of the relationship of this phenomenon to content is carried out in order to identify the nuclear topic areas that in turn determine this half-life. Moreover, the paper provides an assessment of those subject areas for each of the journals studied that tend to lengthen or shorten the half-life of a given bibliographic reference. As such, the bibliographic half-life may be considered an indicator of the thematic inclination of a given journal.

We identify an essential role for the RGD (Arg-Gly-Asp tripeptide) moiety in vivo during adult peripheral neuron regenerative growth. Beyond a peripheral nerve transection there were rises in the fibronectin extracellular matrix, and striking rises in the mRNA and protein expression of integrin subunits sensitive to RGD/fibronectin signalling. Neuron perikarya, axons and Schwann cells all expressed RGD/fibronectin sensitive integrins after injury. To evaluate the significance of RGD/fibronectin-integrin interactions, we infused solutions of a pentapeptide including the RGD motif (sRGD) serially and directly within the milieu of early axon growth across rat sciatic transection injuries. While low dose infusions of sRGD facilitated early axon ingrowth, we encountered inhibition of ingrowth and bridge formation with higher doses of sRGD indicating competitive disruption of RGD/fibronectin-integrin signalling.Fibronectin RGD moieties serve a critical and important role during peripheral axon outgrowth.

The method of biogeochemical indication was used for the assessment of the anthropogenic geochemical impact on the specially protected territory of an important monument of nature, culture and history of Ukraine – Trostyanets arboretum. As bioindicators of chemical elements content in the atmosphere the epiphytic lichens of Parmelia sulcata Tayl., Parmelina tiliacea (Hoffm.) Hale, Xanthoria parietina (L.) Th. Fr., Hypogymnia physodes (L.) Nyl. and Evernia prunastri (L.) Ach. were used. For the biogeochemical indication of soil and groundwater conditions the leaves of Norway maple (Acer platanoides L.) were used. In the above-mentioned indicator plants the content of 20 micro- and macroelements (Al, Cd, Cr, Cu, Fe, Ni, Pb, V, Zn, Ba, Ca, Co, K, Mg, Mn, Na, S, Sr, Ti, Se) was detected (by ICP OE spectrometry). The obtained data of biogeochemical indication of the content of chemical elements have been processed and interpreted using the geostatistical method of composite biplot and the method of triangular diagrams. Atmogeochemical and lithohydrogeochemical fields were studied and the causes of formation of anthropogenic geochemical loads were elucidated and their potential impact on the unique landscapes of Trostyanets arboretum was shown.

Advanced wheat lines carrying the Hessian fly resistance gene H27 were obtained by backcrossing the wheat/Aegilops ventricosa introgression line, H-93-33, to commercial wheat cultivars as recurrent parents. The Acph-Nv1 marker linked to the gene H27 on the 4Nv chromosome of this line was used for marker assisted selection. Advanced lines were evaluated for Hessian fly resistance in field and growth chamber tests, and for other agronomic traits during several crop seasons at different localities of Spain. The hessian fly resistance levels of lines carrying the 4Nv chromosome introgression (4D/4Nv substitution and recombination lines that previously were classified by in situ hybridisation) were high, but always lower than that of their Ae. ventricosa progenitor. Introgression lines had higher grain yields in infested field trials than those without the 4Nv chromosome and their susceptible parents, but lower grain yields under high yield potential conditions. The 4Nv introgression was also associated with later heading, and lower tiller and grain numbers/m2. In addition, it was associated with longer and more lax spikes, and higher values of grain weight and grain protein content. However, the glutenin and gliadin expression, as well as the bread-making performance, were similar to those of their recurrent parents.
