Abstract Defects in metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have great impact on their nano-scale structure and physiochemical properties. However, isolated defects are easily concealed when the frameworks are interrogated by typical characterization methods. In this work, we unveil the presence of solvent-derived formate defects in MOF-74, an important class of MOFs with open metal sites. With multi-dimensional solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) investigations, we uncover the ligand substitution role of formate and its chemical origin from decomposed N,N-dimethylformamide (DMF) solvent. The placement and coordination structure of formate defects are determined by 13C NMR and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The extra metal-oxygen bonds with formates partially eliminate open metal sites and lead to a quantitative decrease of N2 and CO2 adsorption with respect to the defect concentration. In-situ NMR analysis and molecular simulations of CO2 dynamics elaborate the adsorption mechanisms in defective MOF-74. Our study establishes comprehensive strategies to search, elucidate and manipulate defects in MOFs.

Abstract Thermal energy management in metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) is an important, yet often neglected, challenge for many adsorption-based applications such as gas storage and separations. Despite its importance, there is insufficient understanding of the structure-property relationships governing thermal transport in MOFs. To provide a data-driven perspective into these relationships, here we perform large-scale computational screening of thermal conductivity k in MOFs, leveraging classical molecular dynamics simulations and 10,194 hypothetical MOFs created using the ToBaCCo 3.0 code. We found that high thermal conductivity in MOFs is favored by high densities (> 1.0 g cm−3), small pores (< 10 Å), and four-connected metal nodes. We also found that 36 MOFs exhibit ultra-low thermal conductivity (< 0.02 W m−1 K−1), which is primarily due to having extremely large pores (~65 Å). Furthermore, we discovered six hypothetical MOFs with very high thermal conductivity (> 10 W m−1 K−1), the structures of which we describe in additional detail.

Achieving high conductivity in metal-organic solids can be challenging, due to the difficulty of obtaining a good overlap between the d-orbitals of the metal and the π-orbitals of the organic molecule. Here, the authors present two coordination solids, VCl2(pyrazine)2 and TiCl2(pyrazine)2, with remarkably different electrical conductivity. While the former is an insulator, the latter displays the highest conductivity of any octahedrally coordinated metal ions based metal-organic solid.
