Introducing a segregated network constructed through the selective localization of small amounts of fillers can be a solution to overcome the limitations of the practical use of graphene-based conductive composites due to the high cost of fillers. In this study, polypropylene composites filled with randomly dispersed GNPs and a segregated GNP network were prepared, and their conductive properties were investigated according to the formation of the segregated structure. Due to the GNP clusters induced by the segregated structure, the electrical percolation threshold was 2.9 wt% lower than that of the composite incorporating randomly dispersed GNPs. The fully interconnected GNP cluster network inside the composite contributed to achieving the thermal conductivity of 4.05 W/m∙K at 10 wt% filler content. Therefore, the introduction of a segregated filler network was suitable to simultaneously achieve excellent electrical and thermal conductivities at a low content of GNPs.

Microarray technology represents a critical new advance in molecular cytogenetics. The de-velopment of this approach has provided fundamental insights into the molecular pathogenesis in clinical cytogenetics and has provided a clue to many unidentified or unexplained diseases. The approach allows a comprehensive investigation of thousands and millions of genomic loci simultaneously and enables the efficient detection of copy number alterations. The application of this technology has shown tremendous fluidity and complexity of the human genome, and has provided accurate diagnosis and appropriate clinical management in a timely and efficient manner for identifying genomic alterations. The clinical impact of the genomic alterations identified by microarrays is evolving into a diagnostic tool to identify high-risk patients better and predict patient outcomes from their genomic profiles. The transformation of conventional cytogenetics into an automated discipline will improve diagnostic yield significantly, leading to accurate diagnosis and genetic counseling. This article reviews cytogenetic technologies used to identify human chromosome alterations and highlights the potential utility of present and future genome microarray technology in the diagnosis.

Background Recent studies have reported high rates of recurrence of shoulder instability in patients with glenoid bone defects greater than 20% after capsulolabral reconstruction. The purpose of the present study was to evaluate the failure rate of arthroscopic capsulolabral reconstruction for the treatment of anterior instability in the presence of glenoid bone deficits >20%. Methods Retrospective analyses were conducted among cases with anterior shoulder instability and glenoid bone defects of >20% that were treated by arthroscopic capsulolabral reconstruction with a minimum 2-year follow-up (30 cases). We included the following variables: age, bone defect size, instability severity index score (ISIS), on-/off-track assessment, incidence recurrent instability, and return to sports. Results The mean glenoid bone defect size was 25.8%±4.2% (range, 20.4%–37.2%), and 18 cases (60%) had defects of >25%. Bony Bankart lesions were identified in 11 cases (36.7%). Eleven cases (36.7%) had ISIS scores >6 points and 21 cases (70%) had off-track lesions. No cases of recurrent instability were identified over a mean follow-up of 39.9 months (range, 24–86 months), but a sense of subluxation was reported by three patients. Return to sports at the preinjury level was possible in 24 cases (80%), and the average satisfaction rating was 92%. Conclusions Arthroscopic soft tissue reconstruction was successful for treating anterior shoulder instability among patients with glenoid bone defects >20%, even enabling return to sports. Future studies should focus on determining the range of bone defect sizes that can be successfully managed by soft tissue repair.

In this study, the thermal percolation behavior for the thermal conductivity of nanocomposites according to the lateral size of graphene nanoplatelets (GNPs) was studied. When the amount of GNPs reached the critical concentration, a rapid increase in thermal conductivity and thermal percolation behavior of the nanocomposites were induced by the GNP network. Interestingly, as the size of GNPs increased, higher thermal conductivity and a lower percolation threshold were observed. The in-plane thermal conductivity of the nanocomposite containing 30 wt.% M25 GNP (the largest size) was 8.094 W/m·K, and it was improved by 1518.8% compared to the polymer matrix. These experimentally obtained thermal conductivity results for below and above the critical content were theoretically explained by applying Nan’s model and the percolation model, respectively, in relation to the GNP size. The thermal percolation behavior according to the GNP size identified in this study can provide insight into the design of nanocomposite materials with excellent heat dissipation properties.

To induce uniform dispersion and excellent interfacial properties, we adopted a strategy of combining both polyamide 6 (PA6) grafting for multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) and reactive extrusion of PA6 matrix, based on anionic ring-opening polymerization of ε-caprolactam (CL). Compared to –COOH and –NCO treatments of MWCNTs, enhanced MWCNT dispersion and tensile properties of the composites were achieved using the applied strategy, and the tensile strength and modulus of the PA6-grafted MWCNT-filled PA6 composites were 5.3% and 20.5% higher than those of the purified MWCNT-filled PA6 composites, respectively. In addition, they were almost similar to the theoretical ones calculated by the modified Mori–Tanaka method (MTM) assuming a perfect interface, indicating that the tensile properties of MWCNT-filled PA6 composites can be optimized by PA6 grafting and reactive extrusion based on the anionic ring-opening polymerization of CL due to uniform MWCNT dispersion and excellent interfacial property.

Surface initiated atom transfer radical polymerization (SI-ATRP) documented a simple but efficient technique to grow a dense polymer layer on any surface. Gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) give a broad surface to immobilize sulfhyryl group-containing initiators for SI-ATRP; in addition, AuNPs are the major nanoparticulate carriers for delivery of anti-cancer therapeutics, since they are biocompatible and bioinert. In this work, AuNPs with a disulfide initiator were polymerized with sulfoethyl methacrylate by SI-ATRP to decorate the particles with anionic corona, and branched polyethyeleneimine (PEI) and siRNA were sequentially layered onto the anionic corona of AuNP by electrostatic interaction. The in vitro anti-cancer effect confirmed that AuNP with anionic corona showed higher degrees of apoptosis as well as suppression of the oncogene expression in a siRNA dose-dependent manner. The in vivo study of tumor-bearing nude mice revealed that mice treated with c-Myc siRNA-incorporated AuNPs showed dramatically decreased tumor size in comparison to those with free siRNA for 4 weeks. Furthermore, histological examination and gene expression study revealed that the decorated AuNP significantly suppressed c-Myc expression. Thus, we envision that the layer-by-layer assembly on the anionic brushes can be potentially used to incorporate nucleic acids onto metallic particles with high transfection efficiency.

This study was conducted to evaluate the effects of dietary supplementation of catechins and wheat bran on growth performance, carcass characteristics and meat color using forty-eight Hanwoo steers. Each steer was randomly assigned to one of four treatments. Treatments were as follows: control, catechins, wheat bran, and catechins+wheat bran (CW). At the end of the feeding trial, blood samples were collected for analysis of hemoglobin and iron concentration, and then steers were slaughtered at a commercial abattoir. Vegetation is one of the key factors in river management where environmental aspects as well as flood protection should be taken into consideration. Because of this, numerous studies have been done including experiments and hydrodynamic modelling. Because most of experimental studies were made in indoor laboratory flumes with artificial trees, there are still limitations in transfer of their result to actual channels. REC (River Experiment Center) of Korea has been operating three real-scale, nature-like outdoor experimental channels. In a straight channel, several 4x2 m actual willow patches were planted and have been grown last three years for studies on flow vegetation interaction. A set of intensive flow measurement was made around the first upstream willow patch using ADVs together with measurement of vegetation properties. The experiments were made under several different depth conditions simulating snow-melt and flash-flood. Distribution of flow around and through the patch was characterized along with vertical profiles. The results of the experiment enhance understanding on interaction of flow and actual vegetation in a natural channel and may also provide information on flow resistance used for hydrodynamic modelling and validation.

This study carried out experiments to investigate the effects of vegetation patches of rooted willows on the flow pattern. Stream-scale experiments on vegetated flows were performed for various hydraulic conditions: emergent and submerged conditions of vegetation. Vegetation patches were arranged by alternative bar formation and the flows in vegetated and non-vegetated sections were compared. Three-dimensional flow velocity was measured by ADV (Acoustic Doppler Velocimeter) and ADCP (Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler). Vertical, cross-sectional, and longitudinal velocity distributions were provided for different hydraulic conditions at various points. Flow velocities through the sparse patch were similar to those of non-vegetation area for low flow condition of emergent vegetation. Dense and submerged vegetation produced more complicated and non-uniform flows over the cross-sections of vegetation patches.
