The construction of evaporative coolers in remote areas can increase the longevity of vegetables, improving food security and the local economy of small farmers in remote, impoverished communities without access to electricity. This work presents a 1:1 scale prototype of an 8 m3 (2.1 × 2.1 × 2.3 m) stabilized adobe evaporative cooler, with a design based on the appropriate technology framework, and it was built as a chamber using double adobe walls, filled with wet sand, to induce evaporative cooling. Furthermore, the paper presents the prototype’s performance evaluation. The tests were carried out in the dry and wet states, with different volumes of water. The results show good performance compared with other prototypes, although the optimum watering volume could not be determined because of the high climate variance (outside temperature and humidity) that prevented the repetition of the experiments in identical operating conditions. Stabilized adobe proved to be a good choice for use in the cooler, even when subject to moisture accumulation, indicating an estimated long lifetime for the cooler. The data obtained about the efficiency of evaporative cooling show that the cooler, as expected, has its best performance on the hottest and driest days, reducing the internal temperature (up to 13.24 °C) and managing to keep the internal humidity. The cost, efficiency, durability, and replicability make the proposed evaporative cooler a feasible solution for food preservation.

The necessity to create national to global-scale biodiversity monitoring systems as part of assessing progress toward biodiversity agendas presents a challenge for signatory countries. This is a brief review of ongoing Brazilian national initiatives that would allow the construction of a general biomonitoring network scheme in protected areas; with additional focus on linking independent monitoring schemes. We discuss some key aspects needed to include monitoring schemes under a single framework that will lead to better evaluation of pressure–state–response indicators for managing biodiversity at several scales; and we point out the potential of embracing citizen science and participatory monitoring to quantify some aspects within those schemes.

The proposed paper presents a complete 500W, universal input, wireless electric vehicle battery charging system using a non- conventional compensation topology, LSPS. An algorithm to compensate Loosely Coupled Inductive Power Transfer (LCIPT) systems with such topology is explained. The design and implementation of each power converter, as well as the coils manufacturing process, is briefly covered. Experimental results are shown to validate the expected system behavior.

Este trabalho descreve a construção de um medidor do conjugado eletromagnético de motores de indução trifásicos a partir das amostras de correntes e de tensões trifásicas. A estratégia para o cálculo do conjugado é a síntese do Fluxo do Estator através de Filtros Passa-Baixas em Cascata Programáveis (PCLPF - Programmable Cascaded Low-Pass Filters). A implementação é feita através de Microprocessador tipo Digital Signal Processor (DSP). O uso deste tipo de filtro contorna o problema da integração numérica necessária ao cálculo do fluxo a partir das amostras de tensão e de corrente. Na implementação do Filtro Passa-Baixas em Cascata Programável é utilizada uma Rede Neural Recorrente (RNN - Recurrent Neural Network) treinada com um algoritmo baseado em filtro de Kalman. O resultado desta implementação é um equipamento com precisão compatível com os medidores de conjugado baseados em eixos metálicos, com constante elástica conhecida e strain gauges.

Este trabalho apresenta um inversor com potência nominal de 1kW, desenvolvido para aplicação em fontes de energia renovável. O equipamento pode operar em dois modos: autônomo ou conectado à rede elétrica com controle do fluxo de potência. O conversor é composto de três estágios: inversor de alta freqüência, retificador em ponte e inversor SPWM de baixa freqüência. O sistema proposto foi implementado com isolação galvânica e opera com tensão de entrada contínua entre 30V e 60V, obtendo-se tensão eficaz de saída de 110V ou 240V com freqüência de 50Hz ou 60Hz. THD, eficiência e regulação são parâmetros de desempenho que serão avaliados. Resultados experimentais para cada condição de operação serão apresentados neste desenvolvimento. Características como custo, volume e peso também são descritas.

Este trabalho mostra um sistema de teste de fontes chaveadas de baixa potência, controlado por um software que processa as informações coletadas através de placa de aquisição de sinais, permitindo a geração de relatórios de teste e armazenamento de dados de forma confiável. O objetivo deste sistema é aumentar o volume de equipamentos testados na linha de produção, bem como proporcionar um controle eficiente dos resultados de teste pela automatização do processo, aumentando a confiabilidade dos resultados e permitindo um controle de qualidade mais efetivo. O sistema é composto por dois blocos fundamentais: o subsistema de potência e o subsistema de processamento de sinais. O subsistema de potência é composto por um circuito de variação de tensão de entrada e uma carga eletrônica. O subsistema de processamento de sinais é composto por uma placa de aquisição de dados, um software de controle, uma interface gráfica e um software de geração de relatório. O software foi desenvolvido no ambiente LabVIEW da National Instruments. Embora já exista produto similar no mercado, este produto foi desenvolvido visando o objetivo principal de baixo custo de implementação, conseguido pela customização do projeto, com qualidade comparável aos sistemas já existentes, o qual foi atingido.

RESUMO. Trata da apresentação do Iheringia, Série Zoologia, suplemento Biota-MS, constituído de 56 artigos sobre a biodiversidade de Mato Grosso do Sul (elaborados por 174 pesquisadores de 41 instituições brasileiras e internacionais), em que são listadas 5.195 espécies de animais e discriminadas as espécies ameaçadas, endêmicas ou, no Brasil, só citadas para o estado. O artigo resgata as ações que deram origem ao “Programa de Ciência, Tecnologia & Inovação em Biodiversidade do Mato Grosso do Sul (Biota-MS)”, implantado em 2009, discute a importância da biodiversidade quanto ao seu valor intrínseco e aos produtos e serviços dela derivados, apresentando-a como um tema estratégico ao desenvolvimento regional, e cita os esforços que o programa vem desenvolvendo para atingir os objetivos estabelecidos. Apesar dos entraves à preparação desta edição, tais como a falta de especialistas em diversos táxons e a dificuldade em quantificar a diversidade de espécies de Mato Grosso do Sul a partir do material coletado antes de 1977, quando Mato Grosso e Mato Grosso do Sul eram Estado uno, os resultados obtidos constituem-se em um dos mais atualizados e sistematizados trabalhos de organização de dados biológicos no Brasil.

This work addresses the application of the Genetic Algorithm (GA) technique to optimize the commutation angles of a 2 kW 8/6 switched reluctance machine (SRM). The primary goal is to reduce the well-known drawback of SRMs: the torque ripple. Firstly, the machine was modeled in Matlab /Simulink Ⓡ using lookup tables obtained via finite element method (FEM) simulations. Subsequently, the model was used to perform the GA routine aiming to find the optimal phase commutation angles that minimize the torque ripple factor. Notably, the torque performance of the SRM was significantly affected by the commutation angles during the search for the optimal solution. Afterwards, the GA results for four different operation points were verified experimentally through a developed drive platform with digital signal processor-based (DSP) control and an asymmetric bridge converter. As showed by the experiments, the proposed approach was suitable to reduce the torque ripple by more than 50% for one of the evaluated operating points. Furthermore, it was confirmed that the torque ripple mitigation led to acoustic noise improvement.

This paper proposes a generalized predictive control (GPC) with constraints and orthonormal Laguerre functions using the simplified model of the primary system (reactor core and intermediate heat exchanger (IHX)) of a prototypical sodium fast reactor (SFR). This paper develops a multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) GPC with input constraints able to track polynomial references of any degree applied in coolant temperature difference across the core and fractional power. The manipulated variables of the GPC-SFR are the reactivity and the sodium flow rate of the primary and secondary pipes. Moreover, orthonormal Laguerre functions and step down condition number techniques were also applied to avoid the numerical ill-conditioning issue in quadratic programming of large systems. Thus, a GPC type-2 was designed to control fractional power, coolant temperature difference across the core and sodium tank temperature of the SFR primary system when temperature references change according to a linear ramp after reaching their steady-state operation, sustaining 100% power operation on the reactor. In order to analyze the load tracking capability of the GPC-SFR type-2, the load following from 100% fractional power (FP) to 60% FP at 0.8% FP/min rate is simulated. Constraints on the rate of coolant temperature difference across the core and reactivity were applied for the design safety. For comparison criteria, this paper compares the GPC-SFR type-2 with the GPC-SFR type-1, i.e, standard model predictive control (MPC), to verify the viability and superior performance of the proposal regarding: (a) ramp-tracking capability of temperature and load; (b) the rejections of a reactivity disturbance of -1 cent and a secondary sodium inlet temperature disturbance of $+10 ^{o}F$ ; and (c) a simulation with uncertainty in reactor design. The simulations show that the GPC-SFR type-2 overcome the GPC-SFR type-1 robustness and performance.

In this paper, genetic algorithm (GA)-based voltage optimization of a modified IEEE-34 node distribution feeder with high penetration of distributed energy resources (DERs) is proposed using two megawatt-scale reactive power sources. Traditional voltage support units present in distribution grids are not suitable for DER-rich feeders, while voltage support using small-scale DERs present in the feeder requires considerable communication effort to reach a global solution. In this work, two megawatt-scale units are placed to improve the voltage profile across the IEEE 34-node feeder, which has been modified to include several PV units and an energy storage unit. The megawatt-scale units are optimized using GA for fast and accurate operation. The performance of the proposed scheme is verified using simulation results with a multi-platform setup where the modified IEEE-34 node feeder is modeled in OpenDSS while the GA optimization scheme is programmed in MATLAB.
