Abstract Poorly selective mixed-metal cluster synthesis and separation yield reaction solutions of inseparable intermetalloid cluster mixtures, which are often discarded. High-resolution mass spectrometry, however, can provide precise compositional data of such product mixtures. Structure assignments can be achieved by advanced computational screening and consideration of the complete structural space. Here, we experimentally verify structure and composition of a whole cluster ensemble by combining a set of spectroscopic techniques. Our study case are the very similar nickel/gallium clusters of M12, M13 and M14 core composition Ni6+xGa6+y (x + y ≤ 2). The rationalization of structure, bonding and reactivity is built upon the organometallic superatom cluster [Ni6Ga6](Cp*)6 = [Ga6](NiCp*)6 (1; Cp* = C5Me5). The structural conclusions are validated by reactivity tests using carbon monoxide, which selectively binds to Ni sites, whereas (triisopropylsilyl)acetylene selectively binds to Ga sites.

Introduction People suffering from substance use disorders often live in social contexts with children or are parents themselves. Addicted parents show specific substance-related problems while raising their children, which often leads to various lifelong consequences for the children. The German rehabilitative treatment system allows bringing children to inpatient treatment centres. This mixed-methods study evaluates a newly developed intervention, called ‘KontextSucht’ or ‘AddictionContext’, for parents in rehabilitation treatment centres concerning the effectiveness of the intervention in parenting and abstinence outcome.Methods and analysis The study uses a two-stage parallel mixed-methods design. A feasibility study (stage 1) and a benefit assessment (stage 2) will be conducted to evaluate the intervention. Both parts of the study will be carried out with qualitative and quantitative work packages. German-speaking parents of children 0–14 years will be included in this study. Qualitative data will be analysed using qualitative content analyses, whereas quantitative data will be analysed descriptively using regression analysis as well as linear mixed models.Ethics and dissemination All participants will receive detailed information on the study and sign informed consent before data collection. The research team has obtained the approval of the Ethical Review Committee at the Technical University of Munich in Germany and will follow all legislation rules regarding data protection. The study results will be published in peer-reviewed national and international journals. Furthermore, the study results will be included in an intervention manual distributed to treatment centres.Trial registration number DRKS00030950.

Introduction Rates of incapacity to work due to mental disorders have increased in many European countries. The consequences of persistent stress can impact individuals’ physical and psychological well-being and gradually develop into chronic stress. Mental disorders or symptoms of burn-out syndrome can have severe consequences. Mental disorders leading to work incapacity significantly burden the health system. Prevention interventions can protect against burn-out, depression, anxiety and other mental health disorders. Digital health is a promising approach to increase the utilisation of effective prevention interventions. This mixed-methods study evaluates a newly developed app-supported psychosocial prevention intervention called ‘RV Fit Mental Health’ to strengthen participation in working life.Methods and analysis The study uses a three-stage parallel mixed-methods design. This study accompanies the development (stage 1), piloting (stage 2) and evaluation (stage 3) of the new intervention. Within the stages, there is a quantitative as well as a qualitative research strand. Employed persons with an incipient mental disorder will be included. Additionally, experts within the project or connected areas will be included. Quantitative data will be analysed using multifactorial variance analyses in a pre–post design. Qualitative data will be analysed using qualitative content analysis. The study is a comprehensive research approach to investigate the development, piloting and evaluation of an app-supported psychosocial app-based prevention intervention. The rigour of the study will be achieved through data triangulation.Ethics and dissemination All participants will receive detailed study information and give written informed consent before data collection. Ethical approval was obtained from the Technical University of Munich Ethics Committee. All data collection will follow all legislative rules regarding data protection, also following the Declaration of Helsinki. We present a numerical quantum Monte Carlo (QMC) method for simulating the 3D phase transition on the recently proposed fuzzy sphere [Phys. Rev. X 13, 021009 (2023)]. By introducing an additional SU(2) layer degree of freedom, we reformulate the model into a form suitable for sign-problem-free QMC simulation. From the finite-size-scaling, we show that this QMC-friendly model undergoes a quantum phase transition belonging to the 3D Ising universality class, and at the critical point we compute the scaling dimensions from the state-operator correspondence, which largely agrees with the prediction from the conformal field theory. These results pave the way to construct sign-problem-free models for QMC simulations on the fuzzy sphere, which could advance the future study on more sophisticated criticalities.

Little is known about the contribution of germline genetic variants to cancer drug sensitivity. Here, the authors devise an approach for joint analysis of germline variants and somatic mutations, identifying substantial germline contributions to variation in drug sensitivity.

Travelogues involve different truth claims, depending on whether their authors attempt on the one hand to convey received knowledge about entities and places, or on the other hand, present accounts of the traveler character’s own experiences. This study focuses on a travelogue from 1764 written by the Arabian Nights’ Syrian storyteller, Ḥanna Dyāb. Having written his travelogue more than 50 years after his trip to Paris, he evidently conceived of his narrative as a means to re-enact his experiences as a young traveler. To describe his particular self-staging in this autodiegetic narration “before fiction” (Paige 2011), I argue that an understanding of focalization as a graded visual mediation between the character’s inner life and the reader is needed. This approach helps one grasp how, with reference to Dyāb’s travelogue, truth is not something the traveler witnesses, but rather something the reader is invited to realize. I conclude that, with this shift from witnessing to visualization (Vergegenwärtigung), Dyāb’s travelogue fulfills a core function of literature.
