The metal–insulator transition induced by the gate electric field in the charge order phase of the α-(BEDT-TTF)2I3 single-crystal field-effect transistor (FET) structure was clearly observed near the phase transition temperature. An abrupt increase in the electrical conductance induced by the applied gate electric field was evident, which corresponds to the partial dissolution of the charge order phase triggered by the gate electric field. The estimated nominal dissolved charge order region (i.e., the gate-induced metallic region) was overestimated in 130–150 K, suggesting additional effects such as Joule heating. On the other hand, in the lower temperature region below 120 K, the corresponding dissolved charge order was several monolayers of BEDT-TTF, suggesting that it is possible to dissolve the charge order phase within the bistable temperature region.

Electrophotography is a digital, on-demand, dry, and page printing technique that operates based on toner particles of electronic materials using an electrostatic force and generates an electrical circuit via distribution of the toner particles. We developed a 10 μm linewidth resolution with various electronic materials, including conductors, semiconductors, and insulators, without any chemical pretreatments on the substrate films, while a 5 μm resolution was also possible for limited materials. The electrical resistivity of the printed Ag–Ni after an intense pulse light sintering was comparable to that of commercial indium tin oxide transparent films.

A technique to establish electrical contact and perform multi-probe electrical measurements (e.g., four-probe measurements), even at low temperatures, is presented in this work. The natural adhesion contact (NAC) is applicable to the wide range of dimensions of organic crystals. Furthermore, the precise electrode patterns required to carry out multi-probe measurements are guaranteed, in contrast to fine conductive paste painting methods. We demonstrate four-probe electrical measurements of α-(BEDT-TTF)2I3 (where BEDT-TTF = bis(ethylenedithio) tetrathiafulvalene) at temperatures down to 100 K. The obtained temperature dependence showed a steep meta l–insulator transition and exhibited zero hysteresis throughout several measurement sequences.

Printed electronics are a set of additive manufacturing methods for creating future flexible electronics on thin polymeric sheets. We proposed the toner-type, dry, page-printing of Ag–Ni composite conductive particles on flexible plastic sheets without pre-treatment. No chemical solvents are necessary to compose the inks of the electronic materials used for the toner-type printing, and no chemical treatment is required for the plastic film substrate surface. In addition, multilayer printing is simple when using toner printing because previously printed materials do not need to be resolved; furthermore, composing the thick films of the electronic materials is relatively simple. In this study, we fabricated an Ag–Ni composite toner to improve the fluidity of the toner particles compared to bare Ag particles. We successfully printed IC peripheral circuits at a resolution of 0.20 mm and demonstrated that the actual electrical circuit pattern can be formed using our method.

Alveolar rhabdomyosarcoma (ARMS) is a type of primitive round cell tumor that mainly develops in adolescents and young adults. Immunohistochemically, the expression of myogenic markers is a key clue for pathological diagnosis, and an aberrant expression of neuroendocrine markers and/or cytokeratin has also been reported. Therefore, an unusual clinical course complicated with aberrant neuroendocrine expression may make the diagnosis of ARMS difficult. In this report, we present a case of ARMS that developed in the skin of the abdominal wall in an elderly patient; the tumor cells expressed neuroendocrine markers. ARMS should be considered as a differential diagnosis of primitive round cell tumors in elderly patients and it is essential to confirm concurrent myogenic differentiation and PAX3/PAX7–FOXO1 fusion gene expression to make a pathological diagnosis. Abstract In this work, a thermal molding technique is proposed for the fabrication of plastic electronics on curved surfaces, enabling the preparation of plastic films with freely designed shapes. The induced strain distribution observed in poly(ethylene naphthalate) films when planar sheets were deformed into hemispherical surfaces clearly indicated that natural thermal contraction played an important role in the formation of the curved surface. A fingertip-shaped organic thin-film transistor array molded from a real human finger was fabricated, and slight deformation induced by touching an object was detected from the drain current response. This type of device will lead to the development of robot fingers equipped with a sensitive tactile sense for precision work such as palpation or surgery.

Purpose: Small fiber dysfunction is common in subjects with diabetic polyneuropathy (DPN). It is unsettled, however, whether marginal glucose intolerance is implicated in the onset and progression of small fiber dysfunction. Herein, we explored the relationship between glycated hemoglobin levels (HbA1c) and pain sensation in the Japanese population.Methods: A population-based study of 894 individuals (352 men, 542 women; average age 53.8 ± 0.5 years) and 55 subjects with impaired fasting glucose (IFG) in the 2017 Iwaki project were enrolled in this study. Individuals with diabetes were excluded. Relationships between pain threshold for intraepidermal electrical stimulation (P-IES) and parameters associated with metabolic syndrome were examined.Results: P-IES was elevated with increasing of age in women but not in men. Average P-IES (mA) was increased in IFG subjects (n = 55, 0.20 ± 0.03) compared with normoglycemic/non-IFG individuals (n = 894, 0.15 ± 0.01) (p < 0.01). It was comparable between IFG and a group of normal high HbA1c (5.9–6.4%). Univariate linear regression analyses showed no influence of sex, triglyceride, or cholesterol on the value of P-IES. In contrast, there were significant correlations between P-IES and serum HbA1c level (ß = 0.120, p < 0.001) Adjustments for the multiple clinical measurements confirmed positive correlation of P-IES with HbA1c (ß = 0.077, p = 0.046).Conclusion: Individuals with normal high HbA1c exhibited an elevated P-IES in a healthy Japanese population which may be useful for the screening of subclinical DPN.

A high-performance vertical-type organic transistor has been fabricated using bis(l,2,5-thiadiazolo)-p-quinobis(l,3-dithiole) (BTQBT) for the channel layer. The BTQBT molecules are oriented horizontally, with the molecular plane of each monolayer parallel to the substrate. The π–π stacking direction of the BTQBT molecules is aligned with the carrier transport direction in this vertical transistor. The modulated drain current density exceeded 1 A cm−2 upon the application of a gate voltage of less than 5 V. In addition, the device exhibits a high on/off current ratio of over 105.

A gate-induced thermally stimulated current (TSC) on β′-(BEDT-TTF)(TCNQ) crystalline FET were conducted to elucidate the previously observed ferroelectric-like behaviors. TSC which is symmetric for the polarization of an applied VPG and has a peak at around 285 K was assigned as a pyroelectric current. By integrating the pyroelectric current, temperature dependence of the remnant polarization charge was obtained and the existence of the ferroelectric phase transition at 285 K was clearly demonstrated. We have tentatively concluded that the phase transition between dimer Mott insulator and charge ordered phase occurred at around the interface of organic crystal and substrate.

Hepatitis C virus (HCV) is one of the viruses known to cause hepatic cancer. HCV is also believed to be involved in malignant lymphoma. In this paper, we investigated characteristics of malignant lymphoma cases that were anti-HCV antibody (HCV-Ab) positive. We were able to perform pathological examinations on 13 out of 14 HCV-positive cases. Of these, lymphoid tissues of 10 stained positive for HCV-Ab. There was no significant correlation between the degree of HCV staining and the rate of recurrence or resistance to treatment. However, there did appear to be a consistent decrease in the amount of HCV-RNA between pre- and posttreatment among HCV-Ab-positive cases; that is, treatment-resistant cases that exhibited resistance from the first treatment and recurrent cases more frequently had a higher HCV level at treatment termination compared to the pretreatment level. This suggests that the HCV virus either accelerates oncogenesis by direct interaction with B cells or indirectly affects lymphoma prognosis.

Abstract Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a risk factor for pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) that promotes the promoter methylation of CDH1. It is still unclear whether DM can exert other epigenetic effects, such as altering microRNA (miR) expression, in PDAC. The expression of miR‐100‐5p is known to be changed in DM patients and can suppress the expression of E‐cadherin. In this study, the correlation between DM status and dual epigenetic changes was evaluated in PDAC specimens from patients who underwent radical surgical resection. A total of 132 consecutive patients with PDAC were clinicopathologically evaluated. E‐cadherin and nuclear β‐catenin expression was measured using immunohistochemistry. DNA and miRs were extracted from the main tumor site on formalin‐fixed paraffin‐embedded tissue sections. TaqMan miR assays were applied to assess miR‐100‐5p expression. Bisulfite modification was conducted on the extracted DNA, which was then subjected to methylation‐specific polymerase chain reaction. Immunohistochemistry revealed that decreased E‐cadherin expression and increased nuclear β‐catenin expression were significantly associated with DM and poor tumor cell differentiation. The presence of long‐duration DM (≥3 years) was a significant factor contributing to CDH1 promoter methylation (p < 0.01), while miR‐100‐5p expression was proportionally correlated with the preoperative HbA1c level (R = 0.34, p

ABSTRACT Aims/Introduction The mismatch repair (MMR) protein recognizes DNA replication errors and plays an important role in tumorigenesis, including pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC). Although PMS2, a MMR protein, is degraded under oxidative stress, the effects of diabetes are still unclear. Herein, we focused on whether diabetes affected MMR protein expression in PDAC. Materials and Methods Tissues from 61 surgically resected PDAC subjects were clinicopathologically analyzed. Immunohistochemical analysis was performed for MMR protein expression, oxidative stress, and immune cell infiltration. The change of MMR protein expression was assessed in PDAC cell lines under stimulation with 25 mM glucose and 500 μM palmitic acid. Survival curves were analyzed by the Kaplan–Meier method with the log‐rank test. Results Diabetes complicated with dyslipidemia significantly decreased the expression of PMS2 in PDAC tissues with an inverse correlation with the degree of oxidative stress. Palmitic acid combined with high glucose induced degradation of PMS2 protein, enhancing oxidative stress in vitro. CD8+ T‐cell infiltration was associated with a short duration of type 2 diabetes (≤4 years) and a low expression of PMS2 in PDAC tissues, while CD163+ tumor‐associated macrophage infiltration was increased with a long duration of diabetes (>4 years). ABSTRACT The etiology of type 2 diabetes is multifactorial, in which environmental and genetic factors are involved to varying degrees. This suggests that its pathophysiology might vary depending on the individuals. Knowledge of the differences is critical, because these differences are directly linked to the care and treatment of the patients. Recent studies have attempted to carry out subclassifications of type 2 diabetes based on clinical and genetic differences. However, there is no pathological evidence to support these subclassifications. The pathophysiology of type 2 diabetes is generally divided into insulin resistance in peripheral tissues and pancreatic islet dysfunction. Among them, islet dysfunction causes a deficit in insulin secretion from β‐cells. In particular, a deficit in insulin secretion is ascribed to a combination of disruption of the insulin secretory machinery and a decrease in β‐cell volume in type 2 diabetes. Recent research has suggested that transdifferentiation and dedifferentiation are involved in the decrease in β‐cell volume, and that it might change dynamically depending on the glucose metabolic state. However, it is possible that the numbers of islet cells are decreased in type 2 diabetes. In particular, the loss of endocrine cells due to islet amyloid deposits is an important pathological change in type 2 diabetes in humans. These results show that pathological changes of the islets can be different in each individuals with type 2 diabetes and reflect each pathophysiology, which is useful in establishing further subclassifications and developing tailor‐made therapies for type 2 diabetes.

Abstract Aims/Introduction Islets have microvessels that might develop pathological alterations similar to microangiopathy in type 2 diabetes patients. It remains unclear, however, whether the changes correlate with endocrine cell deficits or whether the presence of macroangiopathy influences the islet microvasculature in Japanese type 2 diabetes patients. In this study, we characterized changes of the islet microvessels and endocrine cells in Japanese non‐obese patients with type 2 diabetes who died of acute myocardial infarction (AMI). Materials and Methods Clinical profiles and islet pathology were examined for 35 diabetes patients who died of AMI (DM + AMI) and 13 diabetes patients who were free from AMI (DM). A total of 13 age‐matched, individuals without diabetes who died of AMI and 16 individuals without diabetes who were free from AMI were also studied. Pancreata were subjected to morphometric evaluation of islets, including microvascular alterations of immunostained sections. Results Body mass index in DM + AMI was comparable to those in DM. Compared with DM, DM + AMI showed greater glycated hemoglobin levels, higher prevalence of renal failure, hypertension, smaller β‐cell volume density and greater amyloid area. DM + AMI showed an increased microvascular area and density compared with other groups. There was a significant increase in vascular basement membrane thickness and loss of pericytes in DM and DM + AMI compared with individuals without diabetes in each group, and the extent of thickening was correlated with the amyloid area and occurrence of β‐cell loss in DM + AMI. Conclusions Islet microangiopathy was associated with augmented β‐cell loss and amyloid deposition in non‐obese Japanese type 2 diabetes patients who died of AMI.

It is suggested that activation of receptor for advanced glycation end products (RAGE) induces proinflammatory response in diabetic nerve tissues. Macrophage infiltration is invoked in the pathogenesis of diabetic polyneuropathy (DPN), while the association between macrophage and RAGE activation and the downstream effects of macrophages remain to be fully clarified in DPN. This study explored the role of RAGE in the pathogenesis of DPN through the modified macrophages. Infiltrating proinflammatory macrophages impaired insulin sensitivity, atrophied the neurons in dorsal root ganglion, and slowed retrograde axonal transport (RAT) in the sciatic nerve of type 1 diabetic mice. RAGE-null mice showed an increase in the population of antiinflammatory macrophages, accompanied by intact insulin sensitivity, normalized ganglion cells, and RAT. BM transplantation from RAGE-null mice to diabetic mice protected the peripheral nerve deficits, suggesting that RAGE is a major determinant for the polarity of macrophages in DPN. In vitro coculture analyses revealed proinflammatory macrophage–elicited insulin resistance in the primary neuronal cells isolated from dorsal root ganglia. Applying time-lapse recording disclosed a direct impact of proinflammatory macrophage and insulin resistance on the RAT deficits in primary neuronal cultures. These results provide a potentially novel insight into the development of RAGE-related DPN.

Small fibre neuropathy (SFN) is an initial pathology of diabetic polyneuropathy (DPN). Serum lipopolysaccharide binding protein levels are positively correlated with the pain threshold in the foot, suggesting that the abundance of gut Gram-negative bacilli, which are a source of lipopolysaccharides, may be involved in the development of DPN. Furthermore, the abundance of the gut and oral microbiota is assumed to be involved in the pathogenesis of diabetes. Inflammation and oxidative stress contribute to the pathophysiology of diabetic neuropathy. According to recent evidence, the modulation of macrophage polarization in peripheral nerves represents a potential therapeutic target for diabetic neuropathy. Xanthine oxidase, which is a form of xanthin oxidoreductase, is the rate-limiting enzyme that catalyzes the degradation of hypoxanthine and xanthine into uric acid. Activation of xanthine oxidase promotes oxidative stress and macrophage activation. A preclinical study reported the beneficial effects of xanthine oxidase inhibitors on peripheral nerve dysfunction in experimental models of diabetes. However, the detailed mechanisms remain unknown. In this study, we examined the effect of the xanthine oxidase inhibitor topiroxostat on macrophage polarization and peripheral neuropathy in an obese diabetic model, db/db mice. First, the effects of xanthine oxidase inhibitors on cultured macrophages and dorsal root ganglion neurons exposed to xanthine oxidase were assessed. Furthermore, five-week-old db/db mice were administered the xanthine oxidase inhibitors topiroxostat [1 mg/kg/day (dbT1) or 2 mg/kg/day (dbT2)] or febuxostat [1 mg/kg (dbF)]. Glucose metabolism and body weight were evaluated during the experimental period. At 4 and 8 weeks of treatment, peripheral nerve functions such as nerve conduction velocities, thermal thresholds and pathology of skin and sciatic nerves were evaluated. The mRNA expression of molecules related to inflammation and oxidative stress was also measured in sciatic nerves. Untreated db/db mice and the nondiabetic db strain (db/m) were studied for comparison. An in vitro study showed that topiroxostat suppressed macrophage activation and proinflammatory but not anti-inflammatory polarization, and prevented the reduction in neurite outgrowth from neurons exposed to xanthine oxidase. Neuropathic changes exemplified by delayed nerve conduction and reduced intraepidermal nerve fiber density developed in db/db mice. These deficits were significantly prevented in the treated group, most potently in dbT2. Protective effects were associated with the suppression of macrophage infiltration, cytokine expression, and oxidative stress in the sciatic nerve and decreased plasma xanthine oxidoreductase activity. Our results revealed the beneficial effects of the xanthine oxidase inhibitor topiroxostat on neuropathy development in a mouse model of type 2 diabetes. The suppression of proinflammatory macrophage activation and oxidative stress-induced damage were suggested to be involved in this process.

Introduction Small fiber neuropathy (SFN) is an early manifestation in diabetic polyneuropathy (DPN); however, the mechanisms are not fully understood. In diabetes, SFN is presumed to be common in individuals with overt DPN, enhancing activation of polyol pathway, oxidative stress, advanced glycation end products (AGEs), and inflammation. We explored the relationship between clinicohematological factors related to DPN and pain sensation in the Japanese population.Research design and methods We conducted a population-based study, recruiting 1030 individuals (average age 54.4±0.5 years), in 2017, to participate in our Iwaki project. After initial screening by fasting blood glucose and glycohemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) measurements, the subjects were categorized into control (n=894), type 2 diabetes (n=81), and impaired fasting glucose (n=55) groups. Clinical data were gathered, and relationships between pain threshold from intraepidermal electrical stimulation (PINT) and DPN were examined by analysis of variance, post hoc test, and χ2 tests to study correlations among and between groups of the clinical data and DPN.Results Univariate linear regression analyses showed significant correlations between PINT and serum lipopolysaccharide-binding protein (LBP) level (ß=0.1025, p=0.001). Adjustments for the clinical measurements confirmed a positive correlation (ß=0.070, p=0.034). Logistic regression analysis revealed high LBP value (>6.7 mg/dL) as a significant risk factor toward abnormal PINT (≥0.35 mA). LBP significantly correlated with the high-sensitivity C reactive protein, inflammation marker, elevated similarly in both pre-diabetic and overt-diabetic groups, compared with controls, but it did not correlate with a decreased Achilles tendon reflex. In contrast, urine 8-hydroxy-2'-deoxyguanosine, oxidative stress marker, and pentosidine, AGEs, markedly increased in individuals with type 2 diabetes with high HbA1c.Conclusions Individuals with high LBP exhibited an elevated PINT in the Japanese population. Low level of inflammation evoked by metabolic endotoxemia is possibly implicated in the pathophysiology of SFN from pre-diabetic stage.
