Abstract Natural rubber (NR) films with different natural networks—concentrated NR (CNR), deproteinized NR (DPNR), and small rubber particles (SRP)—are investigated to explore the relationship between network structure and film properties using atomic force microscopy (AFM) in PeakForce Quantitative Nanomechanics (QNM) mode. Nitrogen content, gel content, and particle size distribution analyses reveal distinct network topologies in each latex type. Mechanical testing shows variations in tensile strength and crosslink density. AFM analysis provides insights into the crosslink network structures within the pre‐vulcanized latex film. It is found that DPNR and CNR films have a uniform distribution of crosslink networks, with DPNR exhibiting higher Young's modulus values. In contrast, SRP shows varying Young's modulus values, suggesting poor coalescence arising from a harder particle surface and a softer rubber core in an inhomogeneous network structure intrinsic to the non‐rubber components (NRCs) make‐up of SRP latex. This study highlights the pivotal role of natural network structures formed by NRCs in determining the ultimate properties of latex films, which has significant implications for the rubber industry, particularly in the production of latex‐dipped products, medical devices, and bioengineering applications.

Styrene-based ABA-type triblock copolymers and their blends are widely investigated thermoplastic elastomers (TPEs). The design of tough TPE materials with high strength and resilience requires further clarification of the relationship between microstructure and macroscopic properties of stretched samples. Here, we applied atomic force microscopy (AFM)-based quantitative nanomechanical mapping to study the deformation behavior of poly(styrene-b-isoprene-b-styrene) blends under tension. The results indicated that the glassy polystyrene (PS) domains deformed and inhomogeneous stress distributions developed in the initial stretching stage. At 200% strain, the glassy PS domains started to crack. The change in the peak value in the JKR Young’s modulus diagram during stretching was consistent with the stress – strain curve. Analysis of the particles before and after stretching suggested that the glassy domains separated and reorganized during stretching.

The topology of a polymer is normally a fixed property of the material, derived from the characteristic of the monomers and their linkages. Here the authors present a method to transform the topology of block copolymers containing rotaxane linkages via acetylation.

AFM-based nanomechanical measurements are powerful tools for the characterization of polymer composites. However, a flat surface of the samples is usually required, which restricts the wide applications of nanomechanical measurements. In this work, the height-fluctuation induced systematic errors were investigated taking polystyrene beads as the model sample. Corrections were further made based on the assumption that the components of force and deformation parallel to the sample surface can be approximately ignored. Results show the deviations of force and deformation due to height-fluctuations can be well corrected by the proposed method. Moreover, the reliability of the corrected force curves was further verified in the calculation of the mechanical properties. Young's moduli value without height-gradient dependency can be obtained by applying both Johson-Kendall-Roberts (JKR) model and Derjaguin-Muller-Toporov (DMT) model. The correction method proposed in this work can broaden the applications of AFM-based nanomechanical measurements on polymers without strict restrictions on the surface flatness.

Ventilator-associated conditions (VACs), for which new surveillance definitions and methods were issued by the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), are respiratory complications occurring in conjunction with the use of invasive mechanical ventilation and are related to adverse outcomes in critically ill patients. However, to date, risk factors for VACs have not been adequately established, leading to a need for developing a better understanding of the risks. The objective of this study was to explore care-related risk factors as a process indicator and provide valuable information pertaining to VAC preventive measures.This retrospective, single-center, cohort study was conducted in the intensive-care unit (ICU) of a university hospital in Japan. Patient data were automatically sampled using a computerized medical records system and retrospectively analyzed. Management and care-related, but not host-related, factors were exhaustively analyzed using multivariate analysis for risks of VACs. VAC correlation to mortality was also investigated.Of the 3122 patients admitted in the ICU, 303 ventilated patients meeting CDC-specified eligibility criteria were included in the analysis. Thirty-seven VACs (12.2%) were found with a corresponding rate of 12.1 per 1000 ventilator days. Multivariate analysis revealed four variables related to patient care as risk factors for VACs: absence of intensivist participation in management of ventilated patients [adjusted HR (AHR): 7.325, P < 0.001)], using relatively higher driving pressure (AHR: 1.216, P < 0.001), development of edema (AHR: 2.145, P = 0.037), and a larger body weight increase (AHR: 0.058, P = 0.005). Furthermore, this research confirmed mortality differences in patients with VACs and statistically derived risks compared with those without VACs (HR: 2.623, P = 0.008).Four risk factors related to patient care were clearly identified to be the key factors for VAC preventive measures.
