Abstract Direct laser interference patterning (DLIP) is a versatile technique for surface patterning that enables formation of micro-nano sized periodic structures on top of the target material. In this study, DLIP in high pressure, supercritical and liquid CO2 by 4-beam DLIP was used to pattern titanium and zinc targets. Field emission scanning electron microscopy, atomic force microscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy was used to characterize the patterned surfaces. Field emission SEM analysis showed presence of ordered uniform donut ring pattern with hollow centers for both titanium and zinc with a period slightly under 3 µm while topographical images from atomic force microscopy revealed donut rings protruding outwards typically around 200 nm from target surface and consisted of a crevice at the center with a depth typically around 300 nm and 250 nm for titanium and zinc target, respectively. Based on X-ray photoelectron spectroscopic analysis, this is the first study to report formation of TiO2, TiC, ZnCO3, and zinc hydroxy carbonate on the pattern by DLIP in supercritical and liquid CO2 for titanium and zinc targets. Pressurized CO2 is demonstrated as a promising environment with mirror-based DLIP system for reactive patterning. Due to the superior transport properties and solvent power of supercritical CO2, the current study opens possibilities for reactive patterning in environments that may not have been previously possible.

Abstract We present a facile method to prepare flexible, transparent, biodegradable, and fast resistive heaters by applying silver (Ag) nanowires onto fractal-like leaf skeletons. The fractal-like structure of the leaf skeleton maximizes its surface area, improving the transfer of heat to its surroundings and thus making the heater fast, without compromising transparency. Ag ion layer on the leaf skeleton helps to conformally cover the surface with Ag nanowires. The sheet resistance of the heater can be controlled by the loading of Ag nanowires, without sacrificing the optical transmittance (~80% at 8 Ω sq−1). The heating is uniform and the surface temperature of a 60 mm × 60 mm heater (8 Ω sq−1) can quickly (5–10 s) raise to 125 °C with a low voltage (6 V). The heater displays excellent mechanical flexibility, showing no significant change in resistance and heating temperature when bent up to curvature of 800 m−1. Finally, we demonstrate the potential of the bioinspired heater as a thermotherapy patch by encapsulating it in a biodegradable tape and mounting it on the human wrist and elbow. This study shows that fractal-like structures from nature can be repurposed as fractal designs for flexible electronics.

Titanium dioxide (TiO2) thin films are widely employed for photocatalytic and photovoltaic applications where the long lifetime of charge carriers is a paramount requirement for the device efficiency. To ensure the long lifetime, a high temperature treatment is used which restricts the applicability of TiO2 in devices incorporating organic or polymer components. In this study, we exploited low temperature (100–150 °C) atomic layer deposition (ALD) of 30 nm TiO2 thin films from tetrakis(dimethylamido)titanium. The deposition was followed by a heat treatment in air to find the minimum temperature requirements for the film fabrication without compromising the carrier lifetime. Femto-to nanosecond transient absorption spectroscopy was used to determine the lifetimes, and grazing incidence X-ray diffraction was employed for structural analysis. The optimal result was obtained for the TiO2 thin films grown at 150 °C and heat-treated at as low as 300 °C. The deposited thin films were amorphous and crystallized into anatase phase upon heat treatment at 300–500 °C. The average carrier lifetime for amorphous TiO2 is few picoseconds but increases to >400 ps upon crystallization at 500 °C.
