This paper investigates the use of magnetic fluids known as ferrofluids to act as ad hoc valves within pipe systems to create isolation points for stemming pipe leakages and to halt leakages before they become largescale disasters. The sealing abilities of ferrofluids were proven for microvalves (ID ≤ 1 mm) in hydrostatic experiments and extended to the macroscale applications (ID ≥ 6 mm). Theoretical prediction and magnetic finite element analysis (FEA) were also undertaken to predict the burst pressure, and a comparison of both results against the experimental measurement was made. The up-scale results (10–18 mm ID) indicated that it is feasible to develop a ferrofluid that can be extended to approximate the applicable magnet strength to achieve higher burst pressure. It was concluded that the ferrofluid isolation valves hold potential in macroscale environments for process engineering in favour of a positive isolation.

Abstract This article intends to propose a new concept of electric machines that works based on a category of magnetic fluids called “ferrofluids”. For this purpose, a disc‐shaped rotor filled with ferrofluid material is employed instead of a common rotor of an axial‐flux machine, and the conceptual design of the new machine named here “axial‐flux ferrofluid electric machine (FFEM)” is presented. The operation principle of the FFEM is described and a dynamic‐transient model built on the d–q axes equivalent circuits is presented. Simulations are carried out by applying the given model in MATLAB and the results are investigated in different operating conditions. In order to identify the basic parameters and validate the simulation results, a prototype of the FFEM has been designed and manufactured, and some preliminary functional tests have been performed on the prototype. All simulation and experimental results indicate some distinguished excellent performances of the new machine. In the end, it can be stated briefly with some confidence that ferrofluid electric machines can have a high potential for future research and applications in various industries due to the simplicity of the structure, self‐starting capability, ability to work at a wide range of speeds and a flat torque profile.

Magnetic fluids were historically the first active nano-dispersion material. Despite over half a century of research, interest in these nano-objects continues to grow every year. This is due to the impressive development of nanotechnology, the synthesis of nanoscale structures, and surface-active systems. The unique combination of fluidity and magnetic response allows magnetic fluids to be used in engineering devices and biomedical applications. In this review, experimental results and fundamental theoretical approaches are systematized to predict the micro- and macroscopic behavior of magnetic fluid systems under different external influences. The article serves as working material for both experienced scientists in the field of magnetic fluids and novice specialists who are just beginning to investigate this topic.

Abstract It has advantages such as high power density and miniaturisation when the motor operates at high speed. However, as a side effect, the loss density is much higher than that of a constant speed motor. In addition, a retaining sleeve is inserted in the high‐speed motors to prevent the rotor from scattering. This insertion deteriorates the performance due to the increase of airgap, and eddy current loss occurs in the sleeve. In order to improve these shortcomings, the sleeve is redesigned in this paper. A groove was dug into the retaining sleeve and ferrofluid was injected. Ferrofluid refers to water or oil mixed with ultra‐fine powder. Since the permeability of ferrofluid is greater than that of airgap, it is possible to have high output and high efficiency. Since the material of the sleeve is non‐permeable, the performance is reduced with the same effect as increasing the airgap. However, if a ferrofluid is inserted by digging a groove in the retaining sleeve, the magnetic flux from the magnet flows into the stator through the ferrofluid, which has the same effect as reducing the airgap. Therefore, the torque density increases. Also, the eddy current loss is reduced through the retained sleeve groove. Moreover, a sleeve skew structure was used to further reduce the eddy current loss. In this paper, the mechanical rigidity at the rated speed was also taken into consideration. As a result, eddy current loss was reduced and torque density was improved. This is verified through the final finite element analysis.

Couple stresses because of magnetic particles additives on the lubrication performance of a journal bearing system was embraced and scrutinized in the current examinations theoretically. The governing equations of Reynolds (pressure field), energy (temperature field), and heat conduction (temperature field through the solids) are coupled and solved instantaneously in term of temperature and viscosity. After these set of equation pressure is obtained, it is used to obtain the bearing characteristic. It was found that the load currying capacity and maximum pressure are increased due the employing of magnetic fluids along with the couple stresses, as well as side leakage flow and the friction coefficient are decreased. It can be also concluded that the magnetic fluids with couple stresses are better lubricant than magnetic fluid only, Newtonian fluids, and couple stress fluid = 0.

This paper is focused on characterization of magnetic fluids (MFs) and experimental investigation of interfacial structural changes in transformer oil-based magnetic fluids (TOMFs) under the influence of electric field. Recently, such nanodielectric fluids have been proposed to be used as transformer liquid insulation as the addition of particles seeks to improve the dielectric and thermal properties of the base liquids. Ferrofluids typically respond to electric and magnetic fields and can be easy manipulated by such external fields. By mean of neutron reflectometry (NR), we show impact of the electric field intensity on magnetic nanoparticle aggregates in a dilute (1.8 vol %.) classical ferrofluid.

Three types of surfactants (oleic acid, linoleic acid, and a mixture of oleic acid and linoleic acid) were coated on ferromagnetic particles, which were dispersed in kerosene to prepare magnetic fluids, to study the effect of different fatty acids as surfactants on the rheological properties of magnetic fluids. The particles were analyzed by XRD, TEM, FT-IR, and VSM. Furthermore, a rheometer was used to examine the rheological properties of kerosene-based magnetic fluids dispersed with various surfactants. The yield stress at different magnetic fields was calculated by fitting the Herschel–Bulkley model. The fitted curve and the observed values of mixed fatty acids are identical. The graphs of viscosity increase with the shear rate for each magnetic fluid were measured at constant magnetic field strengths. At constant shear rates, the curves of viscosity increase with magnetic field intensity were measured. In the absence of a magnetic field, the relative change in viscosity from 40°C to 0°C was observed. The rheological measurements of the mixed fatty acid-dispersed ferrofluid with a rising magnetic field at a constant shear rate are smoother than the single-fatty-acid-dispersed ferrofluid, indicating that it is more stable. As the temperature is dropped, the viscosity–temperature curve evidence that mixed fatty acids as surfactants can lower the proportion of magnetic fluid viscosity rise.

This article presents the results of a study on the dynamics of a volume of magnetic fluid levitating in a uniform magnetic field of an electromagnet experiencing an oscillatory shift. Samples with different physical parameters were considered, and the dependence of the magnetoviscous effect was studied. It showed that the greatest influence on the dynamics of a magnetic fluid that experiences vibrational-shear and magnetic-viscosity effects is exerted by the sample microstructure and the presence of large magnetic particles. The results of this work can be used in the development of a technique for magnetic fluid samples express testing, as well as in the development of acceleration and vibration sensors based on magnetic fluids

The formation of droplets in microchannels (droplet microfluidics) has a large number of applications, such as in micro-dosing and gas meters. This paper considers the dynamics of direct and inverse emulsions based on water, polydimethylsiloxane, and synthetic and mineral oil in microfluidic chips based on two technologies: glass–parafilm–glass sandwich structures and removable scaffold in a silicone compound. It is shown that wettability, roughness and chip wall material; channel thickness; magnetic fluid flow rate; and magnetic field strength affect the size of emulsion droplets formed in a microfluidic chip. The addition of another mechanism for regulating the hydrodynamics of emulsions using a magnetic field opens up new possibilities for the development of promising devices.

This work proposes a new technique for creating active bubbles and droplets with a non-magnetic core and a coating formed by a magnetic fluid. The procedure consists of the injection of a non-magnetic phase into a magnetic one that is supported by the presence of an inhomogeneous magnetic field from the source, which combines an annular magnet and an electromagnet. We explored various modes leading to different active bubbles and drops as well as the influence of the magnetic field on the size, velocity, and acceleration of the formed active droplets. It is shown that active bubbles change their trajectory under the action of a constant magnetic field and also disintegrate under the action of a pulsed one. This provides a new mechanism for controlling the absorption of droplets and bubbles using a magnetic field. Therefore, these results can be applied to create droplet-based microfluidics systems, in which an inhomogeneous magnetic field can be used for focusing droplet and bubble flows in a magnetic fluid.

This article presents a new method of excitation for a fast-changing rotating magnetic field (RMF) of higher frequencies (HF) causing the hyperthermic effect in magnetic fluids. The method proposed here uses a magnetic field exciter (inductor) consisting of a ferrite magnetic circuit and a system of coils connected in a two-phase arrangement. The proposed system is powered by two higher-frequency rectangular signals, with a 90-degree phase shift between each other, through HF transformers with ferrite cores. This paper presents the outcomes of the operation of RMFs in the frequency range of 38 kHz to 190 kHz, with a value of amplitude of magnetic field intensity H equal to 20 kA/m and increasing temperature, in a sample of APG513 magnetic liquid. The obtained results show that, in the range of the magnetic field intensities of moderate values, at a constant frequency f, the values of the time derivative of temperature are proportional to the square of the magnetic field intensity dT/dt~H2. Moreover, the values of the temperature rate, which are measured with the constant value of the magnetic field intensity, are proportional to the square of the frequency dT/dt~f2. At higher amplitudes of the RMF, the relationship dT/dt~H2 is no longer fulfilled, and an inflexion point of this function appears. In the case of the highest values of the achieved intensity amplitudes (H = 20 kA/m), the parameter of the Langevin function achieves a value equal to ξ = 6.

The centrifugal magnetic fluid seals have important advantage over the conventional centrifugal seals. They maintain very good sealing capacity at static, medium and high speeds of shaft rotation, with the increased seal lifetime, and minimum torque and static friction. These seals are particularly useful in cases when the angular shaft velocity varies and sometimes decreases to nearly or exactly zero, such as in flywheel applications, ship propeller main shafts, etc. Unique properties of the magnetic fluid give rare opportunities for application in marine design, where perfect sealing together with reliable lubrication are required.

A novel structured magnetic field sensor based on dual-core photonic crystal fiber is proposed which has two elliptical central holes filled with magnetic fluid and some elliptical cladding air holes. The transmission characteristics of the dual-core photonic crystal fiber such as coupling length, birefringence, and coupling loss are analyzed with changing structural parameters. Enhanced birefringence is obtained by the novel structure of two elliptical central holes and some elliptical cladding air holes. The sensitivity of the magnetic sensor is calculated, and the numerical simulation result shows that the highest sensitivity of 1200 pm/Oe can be achieved.

Superparamagnetic particles (SUPs) have been used in many applications in the area of hyperthermia-based cancer treatment, as a magnetic resonance imaging contrast agent, as a carrier for drug, in the removal of toxic ions, etc. When SUPs are dispersed in liquid, they can experience Brownian motion and Néel's spin relaxations. In the presence of direct current magnetic field, SUPs do not show a hysteresis loop. Because of this, they are unable to produce heat. However, in alternating current magnetic field (AMF) of a few kHz and small magnetic fields, they can generate heat. For the treatment of cancer, hyperthermia temperature of 43°C is required, at which temperature cancer cells can be killed selectively, but normal cells can survive. The theory behind heat generation from SUPs in the presence of AMF will be discussed in this work.

In this paper, the counter-current Imbibition phenomenon is considered in a fractured heterogeneous porous medium with the consideration of different porous materials like fine sand, volcanic sand and glass beads and magnetic field effect. The Homotopy analysis method is used here to derive an expression for finding the saturation profiles in a fractured heterogeneous porous medium with and without considering the magnetic field effect. Simulation results are developed for the saturation profiles to study the effect of inclination and the viscosity variation of native fluids on the saturation rate and the recovery rate of the reservoir with some interesting choices of parameters.

In this work, we show that the static magnetization curve of high-concentrated ferrofluids can be accurately approximated by the Mittag–Leffler function of the inverse external magnetic field. The dependence of the Mittag–Leffler function’s fractional index on physical characteristics of samples is analysed and its growth with the growing degree of system’s dilution is revealed. These results provide a certain background for revealing mechanisms of hindered fluctuations in concentrated solutions of strongly interacting of the magnetic nanoparticles as well as a simple tool for an explicit specification of macroscopic force fields in ferrofluid-based technical systems.

To measure viscosity of magnetic fluids (MFs) in adjustable magnetic field, this paper presented a novel method using a double tube and a torque measuring motor. The inner tube was fixed and the outer tube was driven by a motor. Mathematical analysis indicated that the viscosity of MFs in the gap between the two tubes could be determined by the rotational speed. A magnetic circuit constructed by some permanent magnets and yokes provided the magnetic field for the MFs in the gap. Changing the number of the magnets could adjust the magnetic density easily. Taking the temperature’s influence on the viscosity into account, an extrapolation method was adopted to measure and control the MFs’ temperature precisely. This method was calibrated by the standard liquid with the known viscosity, which showed that the mean error was less than 0.82%. This method was used to measure the viscosity of MFs composed of MnZnFeO4 nanoparticles, oleic acid surfactants and lubricant carrier liquid in variable magnetic field at the different temperatures.

A tunable polarization beam splitter (PBS) is proposed based on a dual-core photonic crystal fiber (DCPCF). The DCPCF is filled with magnetic fluids in the air holes, whose refractive index varies with the magnetic field strength. The two polarized modes are separated into the two cores at the output ports in a magnetic-free condition. When magnetic field is applied, the output intensities of the two polarized modes would fluctuate. The polarized modes can be ported out with arbitrary proportion by adjusting the magnetic field intensity. Moreover, the polarized mode would be completely converted at some magnetic field strength. The properties of the DCPCF are investigated by the finite element method (FEM), including mode-conversion magnetic field strength, extinction ratio, fabrication tolerance of the PBS, and the performance of PBS at various temperatures. The numerical results show that at 1550-nm wavelength, the length of the tunable PBS is 8.13 mm. The polarized mode converts at a magnetic intensity of 25 mT with a high extinction ratio greater than -100 dB. In addition, the tunable PBS sustains a fabrication tolerance of at least 0.5% and works well at temperatures in the range of 0-55 °C by adjusting the magnetic field strength.

We report a technique for producing hard-magnetic strontium hexaferrite colloidal particles with silica-modified surface. Three types of nanomaterials can be obtained by varying the synthesis conditions: «core-shell» particles; silica gels and sols filled with uniformly distributed hexaferrite particles.

Oxide glasses were obtained by high-speed melt quenching. The glass ceramic samples were prepared by thermal crystallization method in reducing atmosphere. The phase composition and magnetic characteristics of the glass-containing Sr2FeMoO3 are investigated.

The paper presents a concept of thermal-to-electrical energy conversion by using the oscillatory motion of magnetic fluid slugs which has potential to be applied in the field of sensors. A pulsating heat pipe (PHP) is introduced to produce vapor-magnetic fluid plug–slug flow in a snake-shaped capillary tube. As the magnetic fluid is magnetized by the permanent magnet, the slugs of magnetic fluid passing through the copper coils make the magnetic flux vary and produce the electromotive force. The peak values of induced voltage observed in our tests are from 0.1 mV to 4.4 mV. The effects of the slug velocity, heat input and magnetic particle volume concentration on the electromotive force are discussed. Furthermore, a theoretical model considering the fluid velocity of the working fluid, the inner radius of the PHP and the contact angle between the working fluid and the pipe wall is established. At the same time, the theoretical and experimental results are compared, and the influences of tube inner radius, working fluid velocity and contact angle on the induced electromotive force are analyzed.

Iron oxide nanoparticles are the basic components of the most promising magnetoresponsive nanoparticle systems for medical (diagnosis and therapy) and bio-related applications. Multi-core iron oxide nanoparticles with a high magnetic moment and well-defined size, shape, and functional coating are designed to fulfill the specific requirements of various biomedical applications, such as contrast agents, heating mediators, drug targeting, or magnetic bioseparation. This review article summarizes recent results in manufacturing multi-core magnetic nanoparticle (MNP) systems emphasizing the synthesis procedures, starting from ferrofluids (with single-core MNPs) as primary materials in various assembly methods to obtain multi-core magnetic particles. The synthesis and functionalization will be followed by the results of advanced physicochemical, structural, and magnetic characterization of multi-core particles, as well as single- and multi-core particle size distribution, morphology, internal structure, agglomerate formation processes, and constant and variable field magnetic properties. The review provides a comprehensive insight into the controlled synthesis and advanced structural and magnetic characterization of multi-core magnetic composites envisaged for nanomedicine and biotechnology.

The magnetic-liquid suspension guide-way (MLSG) adopts the double support form of permanent magnetic suspension and hydrostatic pressure. It can greatly enhance the bearing capacity and rigidity of the guide-way system. The liquid film thickness is the main influencing factor on both the bearing capacity of the hydrostatic system and the permanent magnetic force. This paper analysed the effect of liquid film thickness on the static, dynamic and vibration index of MLSG. Firstly, this paper introduced the structural characteristics and supporting mechanism of MLSG. Secondly, based on flow equation, the static pressure equation, the permanent magnetic force equation and the force balance equation, the transfer function of single DOF supporting system of MLSG in constant flow supply mode is presented, and analysed the influence of the thickness of liquid film on single DOF supporting performance of MLSG. The results show that with the increase of the thickness of the liquid film, the bearing capacity of guide-way, the static stiffness, the dynamic stiffness and the natural frequency decrease, and the adjust time, the total power loss, the amplitude amplification coefficient increases, the phase margin is almost unchanged. The study can provide a theoretical basis for the design of MLGS in engineering practice.

Herein we investigate the stability of strontium hexaferrite aqueous colloid by dynamic light scattering method in relation to solution acidity and electrolyte concentration.

The paper presents the results of studies on the possibility of using magnetic nanoparticles modified with selected hydrophobic surfactants for model post-production water purification. Colloidal solutions of iron hydroxide (III) and iron oxide (II and III) were obtained and their particles were subjected to surface modification using surfactants. Thus obtained magnetic fluids were used as active agents in the process of removing selected organic dyes from their aqueous solutions. The effectiveness of the modified compounds was analysed using spectrophotometric methods. It has been shown that the effectiveness of the process depends on the type of surfactant used to modify selected magnetic nanoparticles.

A simple, cost effective and sensitive fiber optic magnetic sensor fabricated with ferrofluid and commercially available fiber optic components is described in this paper. The system uses a ferrofluid infiltrated extrinsic Fabry-Perot interferometer (EFPI) interrogated with an infrared wavelength spectrometer to measure magnetic flux density. The entire sensing system was developed with commercially available components so it can be easily and economically reproduced in large quantities. The device was tested with two different ferrofluid types over a range of magnetic flux densities to verify performance. The sensors readily detected magnetic flux densities in the range of 0.5 mT to 12.0 mT with measurement sensitivities in the range of 0.3 to 2.3 nm/mT depending on ferrofluid type. Assuming a conservative wavelength resolution of 0.1 nm for state of the art EFPI detection abilities, the estimated achievable measurement resolution is on the order 0.04 mT. The inherent small size and basic structure complimented with the fabrication ease make it well-suited for a wide array of research, industrial, educational and military applications.

In this paper, an all-fiber magnetic field sensor based on a U-bent single-mode fiber and magnetic fluid (MF) is proposed and investigated. Because of the tunable refractive index and absorption coefficient of MF, the transmission spectrum will change with the magnetic field strength (H), which can be used to demodulate H through the wavelength shift or the intensity change. The influence of the diameter of the U shape to the performance of the sensor is investigated and discussed. In the experiments, the highest sensitivities achieved with wavelength and intensity demodulation are 0.374 nm/Oe and -0.4821 dB/Oe, respectively. The reproducibility of the sensor is studied as well.

Nanobiotehnology is a relatively new field of research, being the interface between the life sciences and nanotechnology. In this area where the work dimensions are between 1 nm and 100 nm the recovery of biomolecules’ quality and the processes involved it is proposed, in the development of materials or devices with certain medical activity. This bibliographic approach proposes a first foray into nano-therapeutic resources use in the medical field. Are presented sintheticaly the main nanomaterials, their properties and potential applications in nanomedicine, magnetic fluids, their synthezis and stabilization as well as recent advances in this topic.

Among sensors using magnetic fluids, inclinometers are seriously addressed by the scientific community. This paper deals with an optical inclinometer exploiting a ferrofluid (FF) mass, a magnetic shaping system and an InfraRed (IR) readout strategy. A dedicated paradigm is also proposed, with the aim of defining a calibration model relating the inclinometer output quantity to the imposed tilt. The working range of the inclinometer is [−15°–15°]; the sensor accuracy and resolution are 0.61° and 0.005°, respectively. Moreover, the device shows a span-to-resolution ratio of 6 × 103.

This paper presents an experimental study on the impact of magnetic nanofluid droplets on aluminum sheet surfaces subjected to a magnetic field. A magnetic nanofluid was prepared by synthesizing Fe3O4 nanoparticles and coating amounts of oleic acid surfactant in deionized water. The wettability of an alumina sheet was first changed by using a phosphoric acid (H3PO4) solution to perform the first anodic oxidation process. A contact angle meter and a high-speed camera were then, respectively, used to capture the static contact angle of magnetic nanofluid droplets and their dynamic characteristics during impact on the surface with/without anodic oxidation process. The results of the static contact angle showed that a more hydrophilic surface could be obtained after the sheet was processed. The dynamic images showed that the processed surface exhibited a slightly greater degree of adhesion between the liquid and solid without a magnetic field. The effect of AAO surface topography can be significant under the action of an external magnetic field.

In magnetowetting, the material properties of liquid, surface morphology of solid, and applied external field are three major factors used to determine the wettability of a liquid droplet on a surface. For wetting measurements, an irregular or uneven surface could result in a significant experimental uncertainty. The periodic array with a hexagonal symmetry structure is an advantage of the anodic aluminum oxide (AAO) structure. This study presents the results of the wetting properties of magnetic nanofluid sessile droplets on surfaces of various AAO pore sizes under an applied external magnetic field. Stable, water-based magnetite nanofluids are prepared by combining the chemical co-precipitation with the sol-gel technique, and AAO surfaces are then generated by anodizing the aluminum sheet in the beginning. The influence of pore size and magnetic field gradient on the magnetowetting of magnetic nanofluids on AAO surfaces is then investigated by an optical test system. Experimental results show that increasing the processing voltage of AAO templates could result in enhanced non-wettability behavior; that is, the increase in AAO pore size could lead to the increase in contact angle. The contact angle could be reduced by the applied magnetic field gradient. In general, the magnetic field has a more significant effect at smaller AAO pore sizes.

AbstractIn this work, ε-Fe3N nanoparticles and ε-Fe3N-based magnetic fluid were synthesized by chemical reaction of iron carbonyl and ammonia gas. The size of ε-Fe3N nanoparticles was tested by TEM and XRD. Stable ε-Fe3N-based magnetic fluid was prepared by controlling the proper ratio of carrier liquid and surfactant. The saturation magnetization of stable ε-Fe3N-based magnetic fluid was calculated according to the volume fraction of the particles in the fluid. The result shows that both the calculated and measured magnetizations increase by increasing the particle concentration. With the increasing concentration of the ε-Fe3N particles, the measured value of the magnetic fluid magnetization gradually departs from the calculated magnetization, which was caused by agglomeration affects due to large volume fraction and large particle size.

This paper is concerned with the development of magnetic fluid micro devices. Liquid responses of a magnetic fluid adsorbed on a ring-shaped permanent magnet subject to alternating magnetic fields were investigated. The magnetic fluid adsorbed on the permanent magnet forms a hole, and the diameter of magnetic hole may be changed by external magnetic fields. Frequency characteristics of micro diaphragm mechanism based on the magnetic fluid-permanent magnet element system were examined experimentally. Liquid surface responses of the magnetic fluid were examined over the wide frequency range. It was revealed that the frequency of the liquid surface motion corresponds to the frequency of external alternating magnetic field. The magnetic field distributions around the element system were also measured, and relations between the magnetic field distribution and magnetic fluid surface motion were discussed. Furthermore, the improved model of the magnet-magnetic fluid element was produced, and its driving characteristics were obtained experimentally.

As a key component of hydraulic control systems, hydraulic servovalves influence their performance significantly. Unpredictable self-excited noise inside hydraulic servovalves may cause instability and even failure. Being functional, with higher saturation magnetization and increased viscosity when exposed to a magnetic field, magnetic fluids (MFs) have been widely used in dampers, sealing, and biomedical treatment. In this paper, magnetic fluids are applied in the torque motor of a hydraulic servovalve to exert damping and resistance for vibration and noise suppression. Construction of the torque motor armature with magnetic fluids is introduced and the forces due to magnetic fluids on the torque motor armature are studied. Based on a bi-viscosity-constituted relationship, a mathematical model of the damping force from magnetic fluids is built when magnetic fluids are filled in the working gaps of the torque motor. Measurements of the properties of an Fe3O4 composite magnetic fluid are carried out to calculate the parameters of this mathematical model and to investigate the influence of magnetic fluids on the vibration characteristics of the armature assembly. The simulated and tested harmonic responses of the armature with and without magnetic fluids show the good suppression effects of magnetic fluids on the self-excited noise inside the servovalve.

Investigations of rheological properties of ferrofluids have shown strong changes of the viscosity in magnetic fluids with an applied magnetic field. The change of the viscosity – the magnetoviscous effect – can theoretically be described with chain and structure formation under the influence of a magnetic field. Moreover, the formation of these structures leads to the appearance of viscoelastic effects or other non-Newtonian features like yield stress in ferrofluids with an applied magnetic field. With a shear rate controlled rheometer – as it as been used in former experiments – the yield stress could not be investigated directly. Therefore the results concerning a field dependent yield stress based on an extrapolation of shear controlled measurements. For the direct investigations of the yield stress, a dedicated stress controlled rheometer is required, allowing direct investigations of the magnitude and field dependence of this effect. In this work the design of the stress controlled rheometer with its main parameters has been described in detail. The rheological investigations with differently composed fluids show that the stress controlled rheometer enables direct measurements of even small yield stresses in ferrofluids as well as large effects like they are found in magnetorheological fluids (MRF).
