Abstract Currently available guided bone regeneration (GBR) films lack active immunomodulation and sufficient osteogenic ability‐ in the treatment of periodontitis, leading to unsatisfactory treatment outcomes. Challenges remain in developing simple, rapid, and programmable manufacturing methods for constructing bioactive GBR films with tailored biofunctional compositions and microstructures. Herein, the controlled electroassembly of collagen under the salt effect is reported, which enables the construction of porous films with precisely tunable porous structures (i.e., porosity and pore size). In particular, bioactive salt species such as the anti‐inflammatory drug diclofenac sodium (DS) can induce and customize porous structures while enabling the loading of bioactive salts and their gradual release. Sequential electro‐assembly under pre‐programmed salt conditions enables the manufacture of a Janus composite film with a dense and DS‐containing porous layer capable of multiple functions in periodontitis treatment, which provides mechanical support, guides fibrous tissue growth, and acts as a barrier preventing its penetration into bone defects. The DS‐containing porous layer delivers dual bio‐signals through its morphology and the released DS, inhibiting inflammation and promoting osteogenesis. Overall, this study demonstrates the potential of electrofabrication as a customized manufacturing platform for the programmable assembly of collagen for tailored functions to adapt to specific needs in regenerative medicine.

Periodontitis is admittedly a microbe-driven intractable infectious disease, in which Porphyromonas gingivalis (Pg) plays a keystone role. Pg can selectively impair the antimicrobial responses of periodontal resident macrophages including their phagocytic and bactericidal activity without interfering their proinflammatory activity, which leads to microflora disturbance, destructive periodontal inflammation and alveolar bone loss eventually. Here, an injectable ROS-sensitive hydrogel is developed for releasing active bone marrow-derived macrophages (named ex-situ macrophages hereafter) and a complement C5a receptor antagonist (C5A) to the gingival crevice. Through appropriately tuning the hydrogel stiffness, the phagocytic activity of these macrophages is greatly enhanced, reaching an optimal performance at the elastic modulus of 106 kPa. Meanwhile, C5A avoids undesired C5a receptor activation by Pg to ensure the bacterial killing activity of both the ex-situ and in-situ macrophages. Besides, the ROS-sensitive hydrogels show another distinct feature of decreasing the ROS level in periodontal niche, which contributes to the alleviated periodontal inflammation and attenuated bone loss as well. This study highlights the potential of utilizing hydrogels with tailored biomechanical properties to remodel the functions of therapeutic cells, which is expected to find wide applications even beyond periodontitis treatment.

Abstract Although molybdenum trioxide nanomaterials have been widely explored as nanoagents for biomedical applications against bacteria through photothermal therapy, chemodynamic therapy, and catalytic therapy, their utilization as photosensitizers for photodynamic therapy (PDT) have been rarely reported so far. Herein, we report the activation of MoO3 nanobelts via aqueous co‐intercalation of Na+ and H2O into their van der Waals gaps as a near‐infrared Type I photosensitizer for photodynamic periodontitis treatment. The Na+/H2O intercalation of MoO3 nanobelts can shorten its length, generate rich oxygen vacancies, and enlarge its interlayer gaps. Such structural changes thus can induce the color change from white to dark blue with a strong near‐infrared (NIR) absorption. When used as a photosensitizer, the I‐MoO3−x nanobelts exhibit much higher activities for the generation of superoxide radical (·O2−) under an 808 nm laser irradiation than that of the pristine MoO3 nanobelts. Therefore, the prepared I‐MoO3−x nanobelts show a spectral antibacterial activity against Escherichia coli and Saccharomyces aureus, thus yielding a good clinical therapeutic effect on periodontitis. Our study proves that aqueous intercalation can be a simple but powerful strategy to activate layered MoO3 nanomaterials for high‐performance PDT.

The paper presents the results of a clinical study carried out because of a departmental medical organization Megapolus. Based on the study of primary medical documents (PMD), 183 people (144 (78,69%) men and 39 (21,31%) women) aged 18 to 55 years, who were treated in the department of restorative dentistry, examine the structure of treatment deep caries, pulpitis and periodontitis. Regarding the treatment of deep caries received 16 people, including 12 (75%) men and 4 (25%) women. Endodontic treatment took place on the pulpit 167 (132 (79.04%) men and 35 (20.96%) women), about periodontitis - 83 people, including (73 (87.95%) men and 10 (12.05%) of the women). The analysis used by physicians treatment of deep caries, pulpitis and periodontitis, and their frequency, as well as their assessment of a departmental standard endodontic treatment.

Background: There are no authoritative meta-analyses and no clear quantitative assessments available estimating effects of open flap debridement (OFD) combined with platelet-rich fibrin (PRF) or platelet-rich plasma (PRP) over and above that of OFD. This study evaluated the actual quantitative mean gain for various clinical (clinical attachment level [CAL], probing pocket depth [PPD] and gingival marginal level [GML]) and radiographic (intrabony defect depth [IBD]) parameters of Platelet Concentrates- PCs (PRP/PRF) as sole grafting material along with OFD and OFD alone in the treatment of intrabony defects. Materials and Methods: A detailed electronic search was carried out in PUBMED/MEDLINE, COCHRANE, EBSCOHOST, and Google Scholar databases by unifying related search terms with additional hand searches in select specialty journals up to May 2017. The eligibility criteria included human randomized clinical trials, either of a parallel group or a split-mouth design with follow-up period of at least 6 months. Periodontal intrabony defects with radiographic IBD ≥3 mm with corresponding CAL ≥5 mm were included. For the meta-analysis, the inverse variance method was used in fixed- or random-effect models. Results: Actual quantitative mean gains were calculated for OFD with PRF/PRP (CAL = 1.1 mm, IBD = 1.68 mm, PPD = 0.97 mm and GML = 0.48 mm) over and above that of OFD alone. Conclusion: Because of very high heterogeneity, the results may not be dependable. Apart from gains in radiographic bone fill, all other periodontal clinical parameters showed negligible gains. Using PRF technologies in periodontal intrabony defects may not be of great clinical significance over and above that of OFD alone, the effect sizes are also not large enough.
