Abstract The development of DC microgrids is reliant on multi-input converters, which offer several advantages, including enhanced DC power generation and consumption efficiency, simplified quality, and stability. This paper describes the development of a multiple input supply based modified SEPIC DC–DC Converter for efficient management of DC microgrid that is powered by two DC sources. Here Multi-Input SEPIC converter offers both versatility in handling output voltage ranges and efficiency in power flow, even under challenging operating conditions like lower duty cycle values. These features contribute to the converter's effectiveness in managing power within a DC microgrid. In this configuration, the DC sources can supply energy to the load together or separately, depending on how the power switches operate. The detailed working states with equivalent circuit diagrams and theoretical waveforms, under steady-state conditions, are shown along with the current direction equations. This paper also demonstrates the typical analysis of large-signal, small-signal, steady-state modeling techniques and detailed design equations. The proposed configuration is validated through the conceptual examination using theoretical and comprehensive MATLAB simulation results. Detailed performance analysis has been done for different cases with various duty ratios. Finally, to show the competitiveness, the multi-input SEPIC topology is compared with similar recent converters.

Because of serious challenges such as air pollution, global warming, and fossil fuels limitations, renewable energy sources such as photovoltaic (PV) systems are increasingly being integrated into the power systems around the world. In this article, a new grid-tied system is proposed for PV applications which consists of an improved flyback DC-DC converter and a new switched-capacitor (SC) based multilevel inverter. Over previously introduced topologies in the same class, the proposed SC-based multilevel inverter has many advantages like reduced number of power switches and DC voltage sources, and also increased number of voltage levels produced at the output. In the proposed structure, one of the most important problems of the capacitive switching inverters, i.e. the occurrence of the impact currents during charging capacitors, is solved by using an inductor with a parallel diode in the capacitive charging current path. This increases the efficiency of the converter and reduces the charging current stress on the capacitors. To validate the performance of the proposed topology, comprehensive experiments and comparisons have been performed and presented. In the experiments, a current controller is used to control the amount of active and reactive power injected to the grid by the proposed grid-tied 17-levels inverter.

Transformerless grid-connected inverters have attained a lot of research interest in renewable energy interface applications, due to certain promising properties like greater efficiency, light weight, affordable price, and tolerable power density. Among various types of transformerless grid-tied photovoltaic (PV) inverters, multilevel inverters (MLIs) are mostly popular due to their ability to transmit reactive power, small filter size for reducing total harmonic distortion (THD) and their common-ground (CG) configuration to mitigate the detrimental leakage current due to the parasitic capacitances of the PV array. Again, among different types of MLIs for PV systems, switched-capacitor (SC) based multilevel inverter topologies are the burning topic in current decades due to their single source requirements for producing multilevel output voltage. However, for mostly used single-phase five-level inverters, most of the existing SC based topology requires at least two SCs for power conversion. In this paper, a five-level transformerless inverter based on a single SC is proposed, requiring only seven switches, no diode, a single capacitor, and one dc voltage source. The proposed transformerless MLI also has auto-boosting capability. Notably, the number of power switches operating at high frequency is limited to three, which lowers down the switching losses of the inverter. Rather than a new single SC based five-level transformerless inverter topology, a control scheme is also presented to inject a precisely regulated current into the grid that can govern both the active and reactive power support modes. In-depth comparisons between the proposed and cutting-edge MLIs are also provided. All these claims are validated through MATLAB/Simulink and PLECS computer simulation environments. A laboratory-scaled prototype is also built and tested to support the simulated claims further and validate the effectiveness and feasibility of the proposed five-level transformerless inverter topology.

This paper presents a novel non-isolated 5-level inverter for interfacing renewable sources to the power grid. It consists of a modified T-type converter with an HERIC-based AC decoupling strategy. The 5-level output voltage is filtered by a passively damped LCL filter, resulting in a high power density structure. Experimental results on a 250 (W) prototype are presented to validate the operating principle of the proposed topology and show a high efficiency over the entire output power range. Besides, the injected current complies with the IEEE 1547-2018 specifications regarding harmonic content until the 10th harmonic, using a classical PI controller with an additional feedforward term.

The problem of copper diffusion in semiconductor devices has been known for several decades as copper has been used as an interconnecting (bonding) metal and has been intensively studied due to its high diffusion coefficient. The influence of the intensive diffusion of copper, depending on the technology of the deposition regimes, has been investigated in thin-film solar cells based on copper, zinc, and titanium oxides obtained by DC-reactive magnetron sputtering. The observed effect significantly changes the structure of the CuO films and affects the properties of the TiO2:ZnO/CuO photocell. The composition of the layers and the copper diffusion in the photocells were studied using a cross-section obtained by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The influence of the copper diffusion in the layers on the current–voltage (I-V) and power–voltage (P-V) characteristics and optical properties was investigated. The photoelectric behavior of two structures of thin-film solar cells was confirmed through -V research. The values of the open-circuit voltage (VOC) and short-circuit current density (JSC) of photovoltaic devices reached (11 ÷ 15) mV and (6.1 ÷ 6.8) μA, respectively. Furthermore, the Pmax, FF, RS, and RSH values were calculated and analyzed. The difference in the composition of the upper layer of the structure caused changes in the reflection spectra in the wavelength range of 190–2500 nm and, depending on the wavelength, varies in the range of 0–27%.

An important requirement of the power grid with high penetration of renewable energy sources is the mitigation of potential harmonic interactions between different distributed large grid-tie inverters and the mains. This work presents the harmonic interaction between multiple multilevel photovoltaic (PV) inverters based on the well-known T-type neutral-point-clamped inverter (3L-TNPC). The multiple 3L-TNPC is connected in parallel to a common ac bus by using distribution voltage feeders. The analysis is performed by using the Norton equivalence model of each power circuit, its admittance matrix modeling, and the potential overall impedance resonances with the ac grid. The main contribution of this work is the development of a current harmonic injection model of the system operating under a polluted voltage grid for harmonic analysis, while overall filtering design restrictions due to impedance limits based on current and voltage standards are considered. The proposed impedance Norton model is compared with the electromagnetic transient model (EMT model) by using comprehensive simulations, showing good match between both models.

The paper presents a comparative study of two solar string inverters based on the Quasi-Z-Source (QZS) network. The first solution comprises a full-SiC two-level QZS inverter, while the second design was built based on a three-level neutral-point-clamped QZS inverter with Silicon based Metal−Oxide−Semiconductor Field-Effect Transistors (Si MOSFETs). Several criteria were taken into consideration: the size of passive elements, thermal design and size of heatsinks, voltage stress across semiconductors, and efficiency investigation. The Photovoltaic (PV)-string rated at 1.8 kW power was selected as a case study system. The advantages and drawbacks of both solutions are presented along with conclusions.
