Abstract Regulating favorable assemblies of metallic atoms in the liquid state provides promise for catalyzing various chemical reactions. Expanding the selection of metallic solvents, especially those with unique properties and low cost, enables access to distinctive fluidic atomic structures on the surface of liquid alloys and offers economic feasibility. Here, Sn solvent, as a low-cost commodity, supports unique atomic assemblies at the interface of molten SnIn0.1034Cu0.0094, which are highly selective for H2 synthesis from hydrocarbons. Atomistic simulations reveal that distinctive adsorption patterns with hexadecane can be established with Cu transiently reaching the interfacial layer, ensuring an energy-favorable route for H2 generation. Experiments with a natural oil as feedstock underscore this approach’s performance, producing 1.2 × 10− 4 mol/min of H2 with 5.0 g of catalyst at ~93.0% selectivity while offering reliable scalability and durability at 260 °C. This work presents an alternative avenue of tuning fluidic atomic structures, broadening the applications of liquid metals.

Abstract Engineering a catalytic membrane capable of efficiently removing emerging organic microcontaminants under ultrahigh flux conditions is of significance for water purification. Herein, drawing inspiration from the functional attributes of lymphatic vessels involved in immunosurveillance and fluid transport with minimal energy consumption, a novel hierarchical porous catalytic membrane is engineered. This membrane, based on an innovative nitrogen‐rich conjugated microporous polymer (polytripheneamine, PTPA), is synthesized using an electrospinning coupled in situ polymerization approach. The resulting bioinspired membrane with hierarchical channels comprises a thin layer (≈1.7 µm) of crosslinked PTPA nanoparticles covering the interconnected electrospun nanofibers. This unique design creates an intrinsic microporous angstrom‐confined system capable of activating peroxymonosulfate (PMS) to generate 98.7% singlet oxygen (1O2), enabling durable and highly efficient degradation of microcontaminants. Additionally, the presence of a thin layer of mesoporous structure between PTPA nanoparticles and macroporous channels within the interwoven nanofibers enhances mass transfer efficiency and facilitates high flux rates. Notably, the prepared hierarchical porous organic catalytic membrane demonstrates enduring high‐efficiency degradation performance with a superior permeance (>95% and >2500 L m−2 h−1 bar−1) sustained over 100 h. This work introduces an innovative pathway for the design of high‐performance catalytic membranes for the removal of emerging organic microcontaminants.

Rhenium diboride (ReB2) exhibits high differential strain due to its puckered boron sheets that impede shear deformation. Here, we demonstrate the use of solid solution formation to enhance the Vickers hardness and differential strain of ReB2. ReB2-structured solid solutions (Re0.98Os0.02B2 and Re0.98Ru0.02B2, noted as “ReOsB2” and “ReRuB2”) were synthesized via arc-melting from the pure elements. In-situ high-pressure radial x-ray diffraction was performed in the diamond anvil cell to study the incompressibility and lattice strain of ReOsB2 and ReRuB2 up to ∼56 GPa. Both solid solutions exhibit higher incompressibility and differential strain than pure ReB2. However, while all lattice planes are strengthened by doping osmium (Os) into the ReB2 structure, only the weakest ReB2 lattice plane is enhanced with ruthenium (Ru). These results are in agreement with the Vickers hardness measurements of the two systems, where higher hardness was observed in ReOsB2. The combination of high-pressure studies with experimentally observed hardness data provides lattice specific information about the strengthening mechanisms behind the intrinsic hardness enhancement of the ReB2 system.

Biofilms are a leading cause of infections, especially those initiated on medical tubing. Quantification of pathogenic biofilms is critical for systematic determination of infections, antibiotics prescription, and implant replacement. By the time infectious pathogens are detected in fluids such as blood or urine, substantial and potentially life-threatening biofilms are likely to have already formed. These biofilms can have broad ranging patient care and cost implications. Here we propose a non-strain-specific protocol combining four microbiological assays, which are rarely used together in clinical biofilm assessment, to accurately quantify cellular and extracellular components attached to medical surfaces. Our results demonstrate that the shortcomings of standard approaches can be overcome through the conjunct analysis of total protein (modified Lowry), total biomass (quantitative polymerase chain reaction), cellular activity (ATP luminescence), and extracellular polymeric substances (Periodic Acid-Schiff assay). The efficacy of this multipronged approach was verified using four pathogenic, clinical isolates (Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Staphylococcus aureus, methicillin resistant-Staphylococcus aureus, and Candida albicans) and two types of silicone catheters in vitro. Despite the variation of biofilm matrices among infectious agents, this approach comprehensively quantified the pathogenic load as well as fouling resistance in indwelling catheters obtained from patients. The sensitivity, reproducibility, multi-species specificity, and high-throughput potential makes this approach valuable for quality assessment of catheters, implants, and ventilators in hospital settings.

Abstract The adverse effects of air pollution on respiratory health make air quality monitoring with high spatial and temporal resolutions essential especially in cities. Despite considerable interest and efforts, the application of various types of sensors is considered immature owing to insufficient sensitivity and cross‐interference under ambient conditions. Here, a fully integrated chemiresistive sensor array (CSA) with parts‐per‐trillion sensitivity is demonstrated with its application for on‐road NOx monitoring. An analytical model is suggested to describe the kinetics of the sensor responses and quantify molecular binding affinities. Finally, the full characterization of the system is connected to implement on‐road measurements on NOx vapor with quantification as its ultimate field application. The obtained results suggest that the CSA shows potential as an essential unit to realize an air‐quality monitoring network with high spatial and temporal resolutions.

Abstract Since their debut in 2012, triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs) have attained high performance in terms of both energy density and instantaneous conversion, reaching up to 500 W m−2 and 85%, respectively, synchronous with multiple energy sources and hybridized designs. Here, a comprehensive review of the design guidelines of TENGs, their performance, and their designs in the context of Internet of Things (IoT) applications is presented. The development stages of TENGs in large‐scale self‐powered systems and technological applications enabled by harvesting energy from water waves or wind energy sources are also reviewed. This self‐powered capability is essential considering that IoT applications should be capable of operation anywhere and anytime, supported by a network of energy harvesting systems in arbitrary environments. In addition, this review paper investigates the development of self‐charging power units (SCPUs), which can be realized by pairing TENGs with energy storage devices, such as batteries and capacitors. Consequently, different designs of power management circuits, supercapacitors, and batteries that can be integrated with TENG devices are also reviewed. Finally, the significant factors that need to be addressed when designing and optimizing TENG‐based systems for energy harvesting and self‐powered sensing applications are discussed.

One of the key challenges 2D materials still face is their uniform wafer-scale deposition. Here, the authors present a deposition method for post-transition metal dichalcogenides, based on transformation of an ultra-thin oxide layer on the surface of liquid elemental gallium onto an oxide-coated substrate.

Previous efforts toward the synthesis of materials with superior mechanical properties (e.g., superhardness, high bulk modulus, and high shear modulus) have focused on binary metal boride structures with short covalent bonds. In this paper, we discuss the methods for enhancing the intrinsic and extrinsic hardening factors commonly used to achieve these properties. As the realm of binary metal borides has all but been exhausted, there is a need to move to ternary and higher borides as well as to achieve greater morphological control at the nanoscale. The use of ternary and higher borides as starting materials provides a multitude of diverse compositional and structural combinations. These compounds merit further investigation as they offer the potential for the optimization of mechanical properties.
