Abstract Enhancements in the structural and operational aspects of transportation are important for achieving high-quality mobility. Toll plazas are commonly known as a potential bottleneck stretch, as they tend to interfere with the normality of the flow due to the charging points. Focusing on the automation of toll plazas, this research presents the development of an axle counter to compose a free-flow toll collection system. The axle counter is responsible for the interpretation of images through algorithms based on computer vision to determine the number of axles of vehicles crossing in front of a camera. The You Only Look Once (YOLO) model was employed in the first step to identify vehicle wheels. Considering that several versions of this model are available, to select the best model, YOLOv5, YOLOv6, YOLOv7, and YOLOv8 were compared. The YOLOv5m achieved the best result with precision and recall of 99.40% and 98.20%, respectively. A passage manager was developed thereafter to verify when a vehicle passes in front of the camera and store the corresponding frames. These frames are then used by the image reconstruction module which creates an image of the complete vehicle containing all axles. From the sequence of frames, the proposed method is able to identify when a vehicle was passing through the scene, count the number of axles, and automatically generate the appropriate charge to be applied to the vehicle.

Abstract To ensure the electrical power supply, inspections are frequently performed in the power grid. Nowadays, several inspections are conducted considering the use of aerial images since the grids might be in places that are difficult to access. The classification of the insulators' conditions recorded in inspections through computer vision is challenging, as object identification methods can have low performance because they are typically pre‐trained for a generalized task. Here, a hybrid method called YOLOu‐Quasi‐ProtoPNet is proposed for the detection and classification of failed insulators. This model is trained from scratch, using a personalized ultra‐large version of YOLOv5 for insulator detection and the optimized Quasi‐ProtoPNet model for classification. For the optimization of the Quasi‐ProtoPNet structure, the backbones VGG‐16, VGG‐19, ResNet‐34, ResNet‐152, DenseNet‐121, and DenseNet‐161 are evaluated. The F1‐score of 0.95165 was achieved using the proposed approach (based on DenseNet‐161) which outperforms models of the same class such as the Semi‐ProtoPNet, Ps‐ProtoPNet, Gen‐ProtoPNet, NP‐ProtoPNet, and the standard ProtoPNet for the classification task.

Genome-wide association studies (GWAS) and candidate pathway studies have identified low-penetrant genetic variants associated with cutaneous melanoma. We investigated the association of melanoma-risk variants with primary melanoma tumor prognostic characteristics and melanoma-specific survival. The Genes, Environment, and Melanoma Study enrolled 3285 European origin participants with incident invasive primary melanoma. For each of 47 melanoma-risk single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs), we used linear and logistic regression modeling to estimate, respectively, the per allele mean changes in log of Breslow thickness and odds ratios for presence of ulceration, mitoses, and tumor-infiltrating lymphocytes (TILs). We also used Cox proportional hazards regression modeling to estimate the per allele hazard ratios for melanoma-specific survival. Passing the false discovery threshold (p = 0.0026) were associations of IRF4 rs12203592 and CCND1 rs1485993 with log of Breslow thickness, and association of TERT rs2242652 with presence of mitoses. IRF4 rs12203592 also had nominal associations (p < 0.05) with presence of mitoses and melanoma-specific survival, as well as a borderline association (p = 0.07) with ulceration. CCND1 rs1485993 also had a borderline association with presence of mitoses (p = 0.06). MX2 rs45430 had nominal associations with log of Breslow thickness, presence of mitoses, and melanoma-specific survival. Our study indicates that further research investigating the associations of these genetic variants with underlying biologic pathways related to tumor progression is warranted.

In an effort to understand the difference between melanomas diagnosed in Australia (New South Wales) and Canada, where the incidence in New South Wales is almost three times greater than in Canada, and mortality is twice as high although survival is slightly more favorable, we had one pathologist review 1,271 melanomas from British Columbia and Ontario, Canada, to compare these to melanomas in New South Wales, Australia. We hypothesized that histopathologic characteristics might provide insight into divergent pathways to melanoma development. We found a number of differences in risk factors and tumor characteristics between the two geographic areas. There were higher mole counts and darker phenotypes in the Canadian patients, while the Australian patients had greater solar elastosis, more lentigo maligna melanomas, and more tumor infiltrating lymphocytes. We hypothesize that the differences observed may illustrate different etiologies – the cumulative exposure pathway among Australian patients and the nevus pathway among Canadian patients. This is one of the largest studies investigating the divergent pathway hypothesis and is particularly robust due to the evaluation of all lesions by one dermatopathologist.

Background Mild anemia is a frequent although often overlooked finding in old age. Nevertheless, in recent years anemia has been linked to several adverse outcomes in the elderly population. Objective of the study was to investigate the association of mild anemia (hemoglobin concentrations: 10.0–11.9/12.9 g/dL in women/men) with all-cause mortality over 11–15 years and the effect of change in anemia status on mortality in young-old (65–84 years) and old-old (80+ years). Methods The Health and Anemia and Monzino 80-plus are two door-to-door, prospective population-based studies that included residents aged 65-plus years in Biella municipality and 80-plus years in Varese province, Italy. No exclusion criteria were used. Results Among 4,494 young-old and 1,842 old-old, mortality risk over 15/11 years was significantly higher in individuals with mild anemia compared with those without (young-old: fully-adjusted HR: 1.35, 95%CI, 1.15–1.58; old-old: fully-adjusted HR: 1.28, 95%CI, 1.14–1.44). Results were similar in the disease-free subpopulation (age, sex, education, smoking history, and alcohol consumption adjusted HR: 1.54, 95%CI, 1.02–2.34). Both age groups showed a dose-response relationship between anemia severity and mortality (P for trend Conclusions Findings from these two large prospective population-based studies consistently suggest an independent, long-term impact of mild anemia on survival at older ages.

The present article aims at analyzing the social and ontological effects of listening music online, with particular attention to the artistic practice of improvisation. In the first paragraph, I will briefly explain the essential concepts which ontology of music has traditionally counted on, and I will suggest an alternative theoretical approach, that I define as ontology of musical act. Then I will investigate the relation between recording practices and improvisation. In the final paragraph I will compare some features of musical recordings (suggested by Andrew Kania) with those of technological devices that allow us to listen music online.

In control engineering education, the possibility of using a real control system in the learning process motivates professors to improve both students’ knowledge and skills, thus avoiding an approach only based on control theory. While considering that control engineering laboratories are expensive, mainly because educational plants should reproduce classical problems that are found in the industry, the use of virtual laboratories appears as an interesting strategy for reducing costs and improving the diversity of experiments. In this research, remote experimentation was assumed regarding the ball and beam process as an alternative didactic methodology. While assuming a nonlinear and unstable open-loop process, this study presents how students should proceed to control the plant focusing on the topic that is associated with multiobjective optimization. Proportional-Integral-Derivative (PID) controller was tuned considering the Non-dominated Sorting Genetic Algorithm (NSGA-II) to illustrate the WebLab learning procedures described in this research. The proposed strategy was compared to the Åström’s robust loop shaping method to emphasize the performance of the multiobjective optimization technique. Analyzing the feedback provided by the students, remote experimentation can be seen as an interesting approach for the future of engineering learning, once it can be directly associated with industry demand of connected machines and real-time information analysis.

The surface contamination of electrical insulators can increase the electrical conductivity of these components, which may lead to faults in the electrical power system. During inspections, ultrasound equipment is employed to detect defective insulators or those that may cause failures within a certain period. Assuming that the signal collected by the ultrasound device can be processed and used for both the detection of defective insulators and prediction of failures, this study starts by presenting an experimental procedure considering a contaminated insulator removed from the distribution line for data acquisition. Based on the obtained data set, an offline time series forecasting approach with an Adaptive Neuro-Fuzzy Inference System (ANFIS) was conducted. To improve the time series forecasting performance and to reduce the noise, Wavelet Packets Transform (WPT) was associated to the ANFIS model. Once the ANFIS model associated with WPT has distinct parameters to be adjusted, a complete evaluation concerning different model configurations was conducted. In this case, three inference system structures were evaluated: grid partition, fuzzy c-means clustering, and subtractive clustering. A performance analysis focusing on computational effort and the coefficient of determination provided additional parameter configurations for the model. Taking into account both parametrical and statistical analysis, the Wavelet Neuro-Fuzzy System with fuzzy c-means showed that it is possible to achieve impressive accuracy, even when compared to classical approaches, in the prediction of electrical insulators conditions.

Building envelopes are constantly subjected to temperature and moisture gradients. This loading induces a complex response, particularly for highly hygroscopic insulating materials. Latent effects can no longer be neglected for these materials in which heat and moisture transfers are strongly coupled. The purpose of this article is to analyze the behavior of a wood fiber insulation subjected to non-isothermal loading under a vapor concentration gradient. An experimental setup and a mathematical model of hygrothermal transfer were developed to analyze the behavior of the wall. The mathematical model describes the main physical phenomena involved, notably water vapor adsorption and the dependence of thermophysical properties in state variables. The experimental setup developed allows studying a wall under controlled conditions. The temperature and relative humidity profiles within the wall were measured. The evolution of the profiles with time suggests that the adsorption of the water vapor occurs together with the redistribution of liquid water within the envelope. The comparison of the experimental results with the numerical model shows good agreement although the prediction can be improved during the transient phase. The comparisons of these results with a purely diffusive thermal transfer model show the limits of the latter and permit quantifying the latent effects on the total heat transfer.

Semiparametric hazard function regression models are among the well studied risk models in survival analysis. The Cox proportional hazards model has been a popular choice in modelling data from epidemiological settings. The Cox-Aalen model is one of the tools for handling the problem of non-proportional effects in the Cox model. We show an application on Piedmont cancer registry data. We initially fit standard Cox model and with the help of the score process we detect the violation of the proportionality assumption. Covariates and risk factors that, on the basis of clinical reasoning, best model baseline hazard are then moved into the additive part of the Cox-Aalen model. Multiplicative effects results are consistent with those of the Cox model whereas only the Cox-Aalen model fully represents the timevarying effect of tumour size.

This essay aims at clarifying the relation between the notions of formativity and improvisation, with particular attention to musical practices. Firstly, I will focus on originality and exemplarity, then I will briefly deepen three themes of particular interest faced by Pareyson’s philosophy of art: 1) the unforeseen; 2) the interpretation; 3) the cue or sketch. My purpose is to suggest some adjustments to the notion of formativity, in order to outline the essential features of a logic of musical improvisation.

Variation in the melanocortin-1receptor (MC1R) gene is associated with pigmentary phenotypes and risk of malignant melanoma. Few studies have reported on MC1R variation with respect to tumor characteristics, especially clinically important prognostic features. We examined associations between MC1R variants and histopathological melanoma characteristics. Study participants were enrolled from nine geographic regions in Australia, Canada, Italy and the United States and were genotyped for MC1R variants classified as high-risk [R] (D84E, R142H, R151C, R160W, and D294H, all nonsense and insertion/deletion) or low-risk [r] (all other nonsynonymous) variants. Tissue was available for 2,160 white participants of the Genes, Environment and Melanoma (GEM) Study with a first incident primary melanoma diagnosis, and underwent centralized pathologic review. No statistically significant associations were observed between MC1R variants and AJCC established prognostic tumor characteristics: Breslow thickness, presence of mitoses or presence of ulceration. However, MC1R was significantly associated with anatomic site of melanoma (p = 0.002) and a positive association was observed between carriage of more than one [R] variant and melanomas arising on the arms (OR = 2.39; 95% CI: 1.40, 4.09). We also observed statistically significant differences between sun-sensitive and sun-resistant individuals with respect to associations between MC1R genotype and AJCC prognostic tumor characteristics. Our results suggest inherited variation in MC1R may play an influential role in anatomic site presentation of melanomas and may differ with respect to skin pigmentation phenotype.

The hygrothermal analysis of roofs is relevant due to the large areas exposed to a wide range of weather conditions, these directly affecting the energy performance and thermal comfort of buildings. However, after a long life service, the solar absorptivity coatings of roofs can be altered by mould accumulation. Based on two well established mathematical models, one that adopts driving potentials to calculate temperature, moist air pressure and water vapor pressure gradients, and the other to estimate the mould growth risk on surfaces, this research introduces an approach to predict mould growth considering a reduced computational effort and simulation time. By adopting multiple MISO (Multiple-Input, Single-Output) Nonlinear AutoRegressive with eXogenous inputs (NARX) models, a machine learning technique known as Least Squares Support Vector Machines (LS-SVM), a maximum margin model based on structural risk minimization, was used to predict vapor flux, sensible heat flux, latent heat flux, and mould growth risk on roof surfaces. The proposed model was validated in terms of the Multiple Correlation Coefficient (R2R2R2), Mean Square Error (MSE) and Mean Absolute Error (MAE) performance indices considering as input the weather file from Curitiba city—Brazil, showing consistent precision when compared to the results of a validated numerical model.

The determination of the rabies neutralizing antibody (VNA) response after immunization against rabies is an acceptable index of the efficacy of a vaccine and a successful treatment. Several tests have been developed in attempt to improve the assessment of VNA, from mice inoculation to cell-culture fluorescence inhibition tests. All of them, however, present special difficulties in terms of reading or accuracy. The present study describes a neutralization test performed in cell-culture appraised by flow cytometry (FC). Serial dilutions of the serum samples were mixed in vitro with rabies virus before the addition of BHK-21 cells. After 24h-incubation, cells were released by trypsin treatment, fixed and permeabilized with a p-formaldehyde solution and stained with a rabies virus nucleocapsid protein-specific antibody conjugate. The percentage of virus infection inhibition caused by specific antibodies present in the serum were evaluated in a Beckton & Dickinson FACSCalibur® flow cytometer. A correlation curve between the IU/ml content and the percentage of infective inhibition was built with a reference serum and the VNA titers of serum samples were obtained by extrapolation. Titers obtained by FC and standard test showed an effective pairing results (p < 0.01), with a correlation coefficient (r) = 0.7. These results permit to envisage the FC as a suitable technique to evaluate VNA in sera from immunized animals and likely in human serum samples. Nevertheless, new studies comparing FC to gold-standard techniques are required for determining the FC values of Sensibility and Specificity .A titulação de anticorpos neutralizantes contra o vírus rábico (AcN) pós-imunização é um parâmetro aceito como indicador de eficácia da vacina e do sucesso do processo de imunização. Este estudo descreve um teste de neutralização realizado em cultura de células, analisado através da técnica de citometria de fluxo. Diluições seriadas de amostras de soro foram misturadas in vitro com vírus rábico e adicionados a células BHK-21. Após incubação de 24 h, as células foram individualizadas por tratamento com tripsina, fixadas e permeabilizadas com p-formaldeído e coradas com conjugado específico. A porcentagem de inibição da infecção viral causada pelos anticorpos específicos presentes nas amostras de soro foi determinada em citômetro de fluxo Beckton & Dickinson FACSCalibur® e comparada com um soro de referência internacional. Os títulos de AcN foram determinados por extrapolação. Os níveis de correlação (r) entre os títulos obtidos com CF e SFIMT foi de 0.7712 (p < 0,001), e entre CF e ELISA de 0,6702 (p < 0,001). Os resultados indicam que a CF pode ser utilizada na análise de títulos de anticorpos neutralizantes em amostras de soro, com a vantagem de ser um método automatizado. No entanto, devem ser realizados novos estudos, comparando a CF com as técnicas consideradas como padrão ouro, para que os valores reais de Sensibilidade e Especificidade sejam determinados.

Despite the absence of current official reports showing the number of cattle infected by rabies, it is estimated that nearly 30,000 bovines are lost each year in Brazil. In order to minimize the important economic losses, control of the disease is achieved by eliminating bat colonies and by herd vaccination. In this study, we compare the antibody response in cattle elicited by vaccination with an attenuated ERA vaccine (AEvac) and an inactivated-adjuvanted PV (IPVvac) vaccine. The antibody titers were appraised by cell-culture neutralization test and ELISA, and the percentage of seropositivity was ascertained for a period of 180 days. IPVvac elicited complete seropositivity rates from day 30 to day 150, and even on day 180, 87% of the sera showed virus-neutralizing antibody titers (VNA) higher than 0.5IU/ml. There were no significant differences between the VNA titers and seropositivity rates obtained with IPVvac in the two methods tested. AEvac, however, elicited significantly lower titers than those observed in the group receiving inactivated vaccine. In addition, the profiles of antirabies IgG antibodies, evaluated by ELISA, and VNA, appraised by cell-culture neutralization test, were slightly different, when both vaccines were compared.

An indirect ELISA for determination of post-vaccination rabies antibody was applied. Purified rabies virus was used as antigen to coat plates, and staphylococcal protein A linked with horseradish peroxidase was used for detecting IgG antibody in human sera. Sera from humans, vaccinated with cell-culture vaccine or suckling-mouse-brain vaccine, were examined. ELISA results were compared to those obtained from the virus neutralization test. The mean and standard deviation of OD were determined for 126 negative sera (pre-vaccination) and for 73 sera from vaccinated persons showing antibody titers lower than 0.5 IU/ml. Results were defined as ELISA -positive, -negative or -doubtful. Establishment of a doubtful region reduced the number of sera otherwise classified as positive (false-positive sera). In this way, the sensitivity, specificity and agreement values were respectively 87.5%, 92.4% and 88.5%. No significant differences were observed in these values when the group vaccinated with cell-culture vaccine and the group vaccinated with suckling-mouse-brain vaccine were compared. It was shown that much of the disagreement between the values obtained by neutralization test and ELISA occurred in sera obtained at the beginning of the immunization process, and was probably due to the presence of IgM in the serum samples, detected only by the former test. This ELISA method can be used as a screening test in rabies laboratories regardless of the kind of vaccine used for immunization.

The currently used pre-exposure anti-rabies immunization schedule in Brazil is the one called 3+1, employing suckling mouse brain vaccine (3 doses on alternate days and the last one on day 30). Although satisfactory results were obtained in well controlled experimental groups using this immunization schedule, in our routine practice, VNA levels lower than 0.5 IU/ml are frequently found. We studied the pre-exposure 3+1 schedule under field conditions in different cities on the State of São Paulo, Brazil, under variable and sometimes adverse circumstances, such as the use of different batches of vaccine with different titers, delivered, stored and administered under local conditions. Fifty out of 256 serum samples (19.5%) showed VNA titers lower than 0.5 IU/ml, but they were not distributed homogeneously among the localities studied. While in some cities the results were completely satisfactory, in others almost 40% did not attain the minimum VNA titer required. The results presented here, considered separately, question our currently used procedures for human pre-exposure anti-rabies immunization. The reasons determining this situation are discussed.O esquema de imunização anti-rábica pré-exposição mais comumente utilizado no Brasil é o chamado 3+1, com emprego de vacina produzida em tecido cerebral de camundongos recém-nascidos (3 doses em dias alternados e uma dose no dia 30). Embora tenham sido obtidos bons resultados em grupos experimentais bem controlados com este esquema de vacinação, no Laboratório de Sorologia do Instituto Pasteur, São Paulo, são encontrados, com frequência, resultados inferiores a 0,5 Ul/ml de anticorpos neutralizantes. Estudamos o esquema pré-exposição 3+1 em condições de campo, em diferentes cidades do Estado de São Paulo, em condições variáveis e talvez adversas, tais como a utilização de diferentes lotes de vacinas, com diferentes títulos, entregues, estocadas e administradas nas condições locais. Cinquenta das 256 amostras de soro (19,5%) apresentaram títulos inferiores a 0,5 UI/ml, sem que houvesse, no entanto, uma distribuição homogênea entre as cidades estudadas. Enquanto em algumas cidades os resultados foram amplamente satisfatórios, em outras quase 40% deles deixaram de atingir o nível mínimo desejável. Os resultados aqui apresentados, se considerados isoladamente, tornam questionáveis nossos procedimentos atuais de vacinação anti-rábica humana pré-exposição. As razões determinantes desta situação são discutidas no trabalho.

This study reports preliminary results of virus neutralizing antibody (VNA) titers obtained on different days in the course of human anti-rabies immunization with the 2-1-1 schedule (one dose is given in the right arm and one dose in the left arm at day 0, and one dose is apllied on days 7 and 21), recommended by WHO for post-exposure treatment with cell culture vaccines. A variant schedule (double dose on day zero and another on day 14) was also tested, both employing suckling mouse brain vaccine. A complete seroconversion rate was obtained after only 3 vaccine doses, and almost all patients (11 of 12) presented titers higher than 1.0 IU/ml. Both neutralizing response and seroconversion rates were lower in the group receiving only 3 doses, regardless of the sample collecting day. Although our results are lower than those found with cell culture vaccines, the geometry mean of VNA is fully satisfactory, overcoming the lower limit recommended by WHO of 0.5 IU/ml. The 2-1-1 schedule could be an alternative one for pre exposure immunization, shorter than the classical 3+1 regimen (one dose on days 0, 2, 4 and 30) with only three visits to the doctor, instead of four.Este estudo apresenta resultados preliminares de títulos de anticorpos neutralizantes (AcN) obtidos em diferentes dias durante imunização anti-rábica humana empregando o esquema 2-1-1 (uma dose administrada em cada deltóide no dia 0, e uma dose nos dias 7 e 21), recomendado pela OMS para tratamento pós-exposição com vacinas de cultivo celular. Um esquema variante (dose dupla no dia zero e outra no dia 14) também foi testado; em ambos esquemas utilizamos a vacina produzida em cérebro de camundongos recém-nascidos. Obteve-se taxa de soroconversão total após 3 doses de vacina, e quase todos os pacientes (11 de 12) apresentaram títulos maiores que 1,0 UI/ml. Tanto os títulos de anticorpos neutralizantes como a taxa de soroconversão foram menores no grupo que recebeu apenas 3 doses, independentemente do dia da coleta de soro. Embora nossos resultados tenham sido inferiores àqueles encontrados com vacinas de cultivo celular, a média geométrica de AcN foi inteiramente satisfatória, sobrepondo o limite mínimo de 0,5 UI/ml recomendado pela OMS. O esquema 2-1-1 pode ser alternativa para tratamento pré-exposição: mais curto que o esquema clássico 3 + 1 (uma dose nos dias 0, 2, 4 e 30) e com apenas três idas ao médico, ao invés de quatro.

The occurrence of secondary cell mediated immune response (CMI) in human antirabies immunization was studied. The Puenzalida & Palácios vaccine was used because it is routinely used in Brazil. CMI was evaluated by lymphoblastic transformation indices obtained in whole blood culture in the presence of rabies and control (nervous tissue) antigens. Eleven volunteers submitted to revaccination constituted the group under study, while three other volunteers submitted primo vaccination were utilized as control group. A clear secondary CMI to rabies antigen was detected in all the revaccinated volunteers who showed earlier and more intense response than the control group. Response to the control antigen, however, present in all the components of the first group was not detectable in two out of the three primovaccinated and very low in the third one.

The present study evaluates the humoral and cellular immune responses in 35 volunteers submited to short antirabies vaccination schedules with the Fuenzalida & Palacios vaccine based on the administration of doses on non consecutive days. The volunteers were divided into two groups. The first group received a total number of five doses given on days 0, 4, 7, 20 and 35. The other group received four doses, the first one being a double dose given on day 0 and than three other single doses on days 7, 20 and 35. The evaluation of humoral immune response was carried out by serum neutralization (SN) and indirect immunofluorescense (IIF) tests, while the cellular immune response was evaluated by lymphoblastic transformation assay (LTA) and skin test (ST). According to our results these reduced schedules elicited early and effective humoral and cellulafimmune responses to rabies antigen suggesting that new reduced schedules should be extensively studied in order to give the proper bases to the proposition of changes in the current long-term schedule.

In the present work the immune adherence hemagglutination test (IAHA) was standardized in a simplified procedure. This test showed good reproducibility, better than the classical mice serum neutralization test (SN). The tests showed high correlation degree: high titers in one test corresponded to high titers in the other one, and the same occured with low titers. The IAHA test is extremely simple, fast to perform, and of low cost when compared to tests such as SN or indirect immunofluorescense (IIF). It also proved to be useful in less sophisticated laboratories or even as a screening test for the titration of rabies antibodies.A Reação de Hemaglutinação por Imunoaderência foi padronizada de maneira simplificada, para detecção de anticorpos rábicos em soros humanos. Esta reação mostrou grande reprodutibilidade, maior que a apresentada pela clássica prova de soroneutralização em camundongos (SN). Ambas as provas mostraram alto grau de correlação, ou seja, altos títulos em uma reação correspondeu a altos títulos na outra; o mesmo ocorreu em relação aos títulos baixos. A reação de Hemaglutinação por Imunoaderência, além de ser de execução extremamente simples e rápida, tem custo bem menor se comparada a provas como a soroneutralização ou a imunofluorescência indireta. Pode, portanto, serde grande utilidade em laboratórios com poucos recursos ou mesmo ser utilizada como uma prova de triagem para a titulação de anticorpos rábicos.

OBJETIVO: Estudar aspectos morfológicos e funcionais dos autoimplantes esplênicos de ratos submetidos ou não à oxigenioterapia hiperbárica (OHB). MÉTODOS: Foram estudados em dois períodos distintos 105 ratos Wistar. No período mediato (n= 56) os animais foram avaliados até o 11º dia de pós-operatório, e no período tardio (n= 49), até o 70º dia. Em cada período os ratos foram distribuídos nos grupos: A- Simulação, B- Autoimplante esplênico, tratados com oxigênio hiperbárico ou não. Nos animais do Grupo A realizou-se apenas manipulação do baço. Nos animais do Grupo B realizou-se esplenectomia total e a seguir quatro fragmentos do baço foram implantados no grande omento. Em todos os animais foram dosados os lípides e imunoglobulinas e contadas as plaquetas e os corpúsculos de Howell-Jolly no pré-operatório e no 11º ou 70º dia de pós-operatório. O baço dos animais do Grupo A e os autoimplantes dos animais do Grupo B foram retirados e enviados para avaliação morfológica. RESULTADOS: No grupo B11nt houve aumento do colesterol total, LDL-colesterol, VLDL-colesterol e triglicérides. No grupo B70nt houve aumento do colesterol total e LDL-colesterol. Nos grupos tratados não houve alterações lipídicas. A IgM caiu nos grupos B e não alterou nos grupos A. Os corpúsculos de Howell - Jolly foram menos freqüentes nos grupos Bt que nos grupos Bnt. As plaquetas aumentaram nos grupos B11t e B11nt e não se alteraram nos demais grupos. A viabilidade microscópica dos grupos Bt foi melhor que a dos grupos Bnt. CONCLUSÃO: Os autoimplantes esplênicos dos animais tratados com OHB apresentaram melhor função e viabilidade do que os autoimplantes dos animais não tratados.
