Simultaneous very-long-baseline interferometry monitoring observations of H _2 O and SiO masers toward VX Sagittarii were conducted from 2014 February to 2019 January. Thirty epochs of observations revealed that the H _2 O and SiO masers had asymmetric and ring-like structures, respectively. However, from 2017 September to 2018 March, the SiO maser transformed from a ring-like structure to a northeast–southwest (NE–SW) extension, and the 43.1 and 86.2 GHz SiO maser components had velocities of 39.48 and 10.65 km s ^−1 in the NE–SW direction, suggesting a possible localized strong shock wave. The H _2 O maser had a double-sided structure oriented in the NE–SW direction with near-stellar velocity components, which aligned with the extended direction of the SiO maser. The nonregular optical brightness and maser intensity variations were speculated to be related to the morphological evolution of the SiO maser. During the stable states attained by regular pulsations, the SiO maser region was presumed to experience radial acceleration, which reverted the SiO maser to a ring-like structure. However, the H _2 O maser region, where the acceleration almost terminates, retained its asymmetric morphology due to the prior influence of external forces. The results suggest that substantial energy transfer can alter the dynamics of the SiO maser and surrounding atmosphere, leading to an asymmetric distribution in the H _2 O maser region.

We present the results from long-term simultaneous monitoring observations of SiO and H _2 O masers toward the Mira variable star WX Serpentis. This study has been conducted with 21 m single-dish radio telescopes of the Korean VLBI Network from 2009 June to 2021 June. Five maser lines were considered: SiO v = 1, 2, J = 1−0; SiO v = 1, J = 2−1, 3−2; and H _2 O 6 _1,6 –5 _2,3 transitions, with the SiO maser lines distributed near the stellar velocity and the H _2 O maser exhibiting an asymmetric line profile with five to six peaked components. Intense H _2 O maser emissions suddenly appeared in 2019 September, indicating flaring. The intensity variations of SiO and H _2 O masers are strongly correlated with the optical light curve (OLC) of the central star, with individual phase lags; the phase lag of the H _2 O maser relative to the OLC is larger than that of the SiO masers. The consequent phase difference between the SiO masers and the H _2 O maser likely indicates that their formation regions and main driving mechanisms are different from each other. The SiO masers in WX Ser exhibit a dominant single-peak velocity distribution, similar to other Mira variable stars. However, the H _2 O maser displays distinct morphological features, showing a radial acceleration and preferential intensity dominance at blueshifted velocities. This suggests that the H _2 O maser clouds of WX Ser are moving outward, thereby developing an asymmetric outflow owing to nonuniform material ejection from the stellar atmosphere. The findings confirm that an initial asymmetric outflow structure emerged during the thermally pulsing asymptotic giant branch phase, specifically in the Mira variable star stage.

We performed simultaneous monitoring observations of the 22.2 GHz H _2 O and 43.1/42.8/86.2/129.3 GHz SiO masers toward the red supergiant VX Sagittarii using the Korean VLBI Network single-dish telescopes. The observations were conducted about every 2 months from 2013 May to 2019 January (30 epochs in total). They included four optical maxima in the active phase of the optical pulsation cycles. The line profile of a H _2 O maser always comprised various velocity components with a wider velocity range and varied from highly redshifted to blueshifted velocities with respect to the stellar velocity, in contrast to those of the SiO masers. We examined the relation between peak intensities and velocities of 11 detailed components in the line profile of the H _2 O maser and the pulsation phases. The peak intensity of each component generally exhibited a better correlation with the pulsation phases than that of total intensity. The peak velocities of several components gradually decreased or increased with respect to the stellar velocity, implying an accelerating motion and the development of asymmetries in the H _2 O maser region. The characteristics of four transition SiO maser properties were compared according to the stellar pulsation phases. The intensity and velocity variation trend of the 43.1 GHz SiO maser was similar to that of the 42.8 GHz SiO maser. However, the variation trend of the 43.1 and 42.8 GHz SiO masers was different from that of the 86.2 and 129.3 GHz SiO masers. This difference stems from the different location of each maser reflecting a different excitation condition.

The East Asian VLBI Network (EAVN) is an international VLBI facility in East Asia and is operated under mutual collaboration between East Asian countries, as well as part of Southeast Asian and European countries. EAVN currently consists of 16 radio telescopes and three correlators located in China, Japan, and Korea, and is operated mainly at three frequency bands, 6.7, 22, and 43 GHz with the longest baseline length of 5078 km, resulting in the highest angular resolution of 0.28 milliarcseconds at 43 GHz. One of distinct capabilities of EAVN is multi-frequency simultaneous data reception at nine telescopes, which enable us to employ the frequency phase transfer technique to obtain better sensitivity at higher observing frequencies. EAVN started its open-use program in the second half of 2018, providing a total observing time of more than 1100 h in a year. EAVN fills geographical gap in global VLBI array, resulting in enabling us to conduct contiguous high-resolution VLBI observations. EAVN has produced various scientific accomplishments especially in observations toward active galactic nuclei, evolved stars, and star-forming regions. These activities motivate us to initiate launch of the ’Global VLBI Alliance’ to provide an opportunity of VLBI observation with the longest baselines on the earth.

The red supergiant VX Sagittarii is a strong emitter of H2O and SiO masers, however its mass loss dynamics are still poorly understood. Here, the authors present astrometrically registered, simultaneous maps of SiO and H2O maser regions, and provide observational evidence for a break in spherical symmetry between the SiO and H2O maser zone.
