Abstract Besides causing financial losses and damage to the brand’s reputation, counterfeiting can threaten the health system and global security. In this context, physical unclonable functions (PUFs) have been proposed to overcome limitations of current anti-counterfeiting technologies. Here, we report on artificial fingerprints that can be directly engraved on a wide range of substrates through self-assembled block-copolymer templating as nanoscale PUFs for secure authentication and identification. Results show that morphological features can be exploited to encode fingerprint-like nanopatterns in binary code matrices representing a unique bit stream of information characterized by high uniqueness and entropy. A strategy based on computer vision concepts for authentication/identification in real-world scenarios is reported. Long-term reliable operation and robust authentication/identification against thermal treatment at cryogenic and high temperatures of the PUF have been demonstrated. These results pave the way for the realization of PUFs embracing the inherent stochasticity of self-assembled materials at the nanoscale.

We study the computational complexity of simulating the time-dependent expectation value of a local operator in a one-dimensional quantum system by using temporal matrix product states(MPSs) and argue that it is intimately related to that of encoding temporal transition matrices and their partial traces. We show that we can upper-bound the rank of these reduced transition matrices by one of the Heisenberg evolution of local operators, thus making aconnection between two apparently different quantities, the temporal entanglement and the local operator entanglement(OE). As a result, whenever the local OE grows slower than linearly in time, we show that computing time-dependent expectation values of local operators using temporal MPSs is likely advantageous with respect to computing the same quantities using standard MPS techniques.

The effect of explicit chiral-symmetry breaking on inhomogeneous chiral phases is studied within a Nambu–Jona-Lasinio model with nonzero current quark mass. Generalizing an earlier result obtained in the chiral limit, we show within a Ginzburg-Landau analysis that the critical endpoint of the first-order chiral phase boundary between two homogeneous phases gets replaced by a “pseudo-Lifshitz point” when the possibility of inhomogeneous order parameters is considered. Performing a stability analysis we also show that the unstable mode along the phase boundary is in the scalar but not in the pseudoscalar channel, suggesting that modulations which contain pseudoscalar condensates, like a generalized dual chiral density wave, are disfavored against purely scalar ones. Numerically we find that the inhomogeneous phase shrinks as one moves away from the chiral limit, but survives even at significantly large values of the current quark mass.

We present compact expressions for the power corrections to the hard thermal loop (HTL) Lagrangian of QED in d space dimensions. These are corrections of order (L/T)2, valid for momenta L≪T, where T is the temperature. In the limit d→3 we achieve a consistent regularization of both infrared and ultraviolet divergences, which respects the gauge symmetry of the theory. Dimensional regularization also allows us to witness subtle cancellations of infrared divergences. We also discuss how to generalize our results in the presence of a chemical potential, so as to obtain the power corrections to the hard dense loop (HDL) Lagrangian. We calculate the two loop hard correction to the photon self-energy in an electron-positron plasma (EPP) for arbitrary soft momenta. This provides the only missing ingredient to obtain the Hard Thermal Loop (HTL) effective Lagrangian at next-to-leading order (NLO), and the full photon propagator at the same order. This result can be easily extended to obtain the soft photon propagator in a quark gluon plasma. We use the Keldysh representation of the real time formalism in the massless fermion limit, and dimensional regularization (DR) to regulate any ultraviolet (UV), infrared (IR) or collinear divergences that appear in the intermediate steps of the calculation. In the limit of soft photon momenta, our result is finite. It not only provides an O(α) correction to the Debye mass, but also a new non-local structure. A consistent regularization of radial and angular integrals is crucial to get this new structure. As an application we calculate the plasmon dispersion relations at NLO.
