Abstract Background To investigate the incidence and clinical characteristics of unexplained visual loss in patients with fovea-sparing rhegmatogenous retinal detachment (RRD) during or after silicone oil (SO) tamponade. Methods The medical charts of all patients with macula-on RRDs, who underwent pars-plana-vitrectomy (ppV) with SO tamponade were retrospectively assessed regarding unexplained visual loss (UVL) of ≥ 3 Snellen lines and alterations on optical coherence tomography (OCT) during or after SO tamponade. The clinical data analysed included visual acuity, surgical parameters, OCT images, duration of SO tamponade and the time point of visual decline. Cases with re-detachment or secondary causes of visual loss such as SO emulsification, epiretinal membranes or macular edema were excluded. Results Over a 15-year-period, 22 cases with macula-on RRD, which had primarily been treated with ppV and SO tamponade, met the inclusion criteria. In most eyes (n = 20; 91%), the RRD was caused by a giant retinal tear (GRT). In 11 of these 22 cases (50%), best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA) had dropped by at least 3 lines for no apparent reason. In these 11 cases, mean preoperative logMAR BCVA was 0.2 (SD 0.13; range 0-0.5), equal to Snellen’s VA of 0.63, and mean postoperative logMAR BCVA 1.0 (SD 0.24; range 0.5–1.3), equal to Snellen’s VA of 0.10. Visual decline occurred about 12 weeks postoperatively (SD 6.2; range 3–20 ) and comprised 8 lines (SD 2.3; range -11 to -4). SO was removed on average 139 (SD 50.0; range 88–271) days after the first ppV. In 9 cases visual decline occurred while the SO was in-situ. In 2 patients, BCVA decline was noted 2 weeks after SO removal. In all eyes, preoperative central foveal thickness (CFT) was 254 μm (SD 24.2), which decreased to 224 μm (SD 29.6) during SO tamponade and increased to 247 μm (SD 29.2) after SO removal, irrespective of the presence of UVL. The mean follow-up time was 20 months (SD 30.6) after SO removal. Conclusion UVL after SO tamponade for macula-on RRD is more frequent than expected. The incidence in our case series was 50%. The mechanism of this phenomenon is still unknown. In general, vitreoretinal surgeons should thoroughly question the need for SO tamponade, inform their patients of possible UVL and remove SO as early as possible. Plant cell cultures have become a promising production platform of bioactive compounds for biomedical and cosmetic uses in the last decades. However, the success so far has been limited. The study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of this unique biotechnology process to obtain a bioactive stem cell extract of Coffea canephora (SCECC) with antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and regenerative properties. Total phenolic and flavonoid contents were determined in the SCECC by spectrophotometry. The chemical composition of the extracts was characterized by mass spectrometry. Antioxidant activity was evaluated using the colorimetric methods of free radical scavenging 2,2'-azinobis-3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid (ABTS) and the ferric reducing ability of plasma (FRAP). The anti-inflammatory activity was determined in lipopolysaccharide-stimulated RAW 264.7 macrophages through the production of superoxide anion (O2•-), nitric oxide (NO), tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α), interleukin-6 (IL-6), and the activity of nuclear factor kappa B (NF-κB). Moreover, the ability of SCECC to stimulate the proliferation and migration of fibroblasts was assessed. Five compounds were tentatively identified, two flavonoids, two phenolic acids, and one sugar. High phenolic content and antioxidant activity were observed in the SCECC. SCECC promoted the proliferation and migration of fibroblasts and suppressed the pro-inflammatory mediators O2•-, NO, TNF-α, and IL-6 in a dose-dependent manner. Moreover, SCECC inhibited the NF-κB transcription factor. Therefore, we obtained evidence that the extract from C. canephora stem cells can be used as a natural agent against skin damage. Hence, it could be of interest in cosmetics for preventing skin aging.

Introduction Regarding last years, in German psychiatry the effects of the changed statutory framework conditions for the use of physical restraints [1,2,3] and the COVID-19 pandemic on the treatment in emergency psychiatry were discussed. Objectives Against these background, changes in the severity of disease and regarding the use of coercive measures in our emergency psychiatry are to be analysed. Methods An internal retrospective study in the emergency psychiatry (2017=reference period; 2019=post changed statutory framework; 2021=post changed statutory framework and during the pandemic) was performed. Results - The socio-demographic patient data (exception: gender) and the distribution of the main diagnoses groups remained stable. There was a reduction in the treatment volume by 4% in the pandemic period compared to 2019. - Both in 2019 and 2021, significant increases regarding the number of patient characteristics of the intensive treatment according to the OPS code 9-61 [7,8,9] were measured. - During pandemic period 2021, a significantly rise in the percentage of involuntarily committed treatment cases [10] imposed. - Following changed framework conditions, there were decreases in the total duration of physical restraint and the number of restraint events per restrained treatment case [10] ratio of five-point/ seven-point restraint events reduced significantly and continuously. Conclusions The amendments in statutory framework for the use of physical restraints made personnel more aware of the issue and consequently led to changes in restraint practice at our emergency psychiatric unit. These effects were partially cancelled by the increases in the severity of diseases during the pandemic. Disclosure of Interest None Declared

Introduction Possible effects of pandemic-related restrictions and adjustments in psychiatric treatment are currently the focus of interest. This article addresses developments in this respect in our clinic. Objectives Changes in clinical practice that occurred during the COVID-19 pandemic are to be analysed with regard to possible risks for affected patients. Methods A clinic-internal analysis was carried out, focusing on comparing a period during the COVID-19 pandemic (01.11.2020-30.04.2021) and a pre-pandemic reference period (01.11.2018-30.04.2019). Results Following trends were observed during the pandemic period: a. Day patient treatment: - The treatment volume fell to 44%. Notable reductions in the number of treatment cases with main diagnoses [ICD-10] F10.- and F30-F39 by >65% were measured. b. Inpatient treatment: - no significant changes regarding socio-demographic patient data and concerning the type of admission and discharge, - detection of coronavirus SARS-CoV-2 by PCR test in 4.7% of the cases, - a decline in the treatment volume to 87% due to 8% decrease in the number of cases and 5% decrease in the ALOS, with patients with the main diagnosis [ICD-10] F10.- were most affected, - increases regarding the percentage of cases with the main diagnosis [ICD-10] F40-F48 (p

Abstract Background So far only single cases with short follow-up have been reported on the use of intravitreal anti-VEGF for traumatic choroidal neovascularizations (CNV). This paper reports a large case series of patients with CNV secondary to choroidal rupture after ocular trauma receiving intravitreal anti-VEGF (vascular endothelial growth factor) injections. Methods Fifty-four patients with unilateral choroidal rupture after ocular trauma diagnosed between 2000 and 2016 were retrospectively evaluated. Eleven patients with CNV secondary to choroidal rupture were identified. Five eyes with traumatic secondary CNV were treated with anti-VEGF and were systematically analysed. The other 4 patients with inactive CNV underwent watchful observation. Results Four men and one woman with a mean age of 29 years (SD 12.4; range 19–45) had intravitreal anti-VEGF therapy for traumatic CNV. Another 4 patients with a mean age of 37 years (SD 6.6; range 31–46) presented with inactive CNV and did not receive specific treatment. In all 9 cases the mean interval between the ocular trauma and the diagnosis of CNV was 5.7 months (SD 4.75; range 2–12). In the treatment group per eye 4.2 injections (SD 3.2; range 1–8) were given on average. Four eyes were treated with bevacizumab and one eye with ranibizumab. Regression of CNV was noted in all eyes. In 4 eyes visual acuity (VA) improved, one eye kept stable visual acuity. Conclusions Here, we present the up to now largest case series of traumatic CNV membranes treated with anti-VEGF injections with a mean follow-up period of 5 years. Intravitreal anti-VEGF therapy seems to be safe and effective for secondary CNV after choroidal rupture. Compared to exudative age-related macular degeneration fewer injections are needed to control the disease. Trial registration Retrospective registration with local ethics committee on 21 March 2019. The aim of the study was to compare physiological statuses of stripped and not stripped tench females with ovulation induced by GnRHa or carp pituitary extract (CPE). The comparison was based on selected biochemical stress indices (cortisol, glucose), condition (TP, TGA), and cell membrane characteristics (ALT, AST, CK). In the first and in the second year, 37 and 29 tench females were monitored, respectively. No differences in the values of biochemical parameters in either period were found between the two groups of stripped female tench whose ovulation was induced by GnRHa and CPE, respectively. No significant differences in TP, TGA, ALT, AST and CK values were found between the groups of stripped and not stripped females with ovulation induced by GnRHa or CPE. Different values were found in stress indices, specifically in glucose concentrations. A significant increase (P < 0.01) in glucose concentrations was found in tench females immediately after stripping and, in not stripped females, about 48 hrs after ovulation induction. Both artificial stripping and the inability to release eggs are important stress factors for female tench.

Carp pituitary proteins and glycoproteins were separated by the combination of immobilized metal affinity chromatography (IMAC) and affinity chromatography on Con A-Sepharose. The protein fractions were analysed by SDS-PAGE. Luteinizing hormone (in the α1β and α2β forms), growth hormone, free α1 subunit and β subunit of thyroid-stimulating hormone were identified by N-terminal amino acid sequencing. N-linked oligosaccharide chains of thyroid-stimulating hormone (β TSH) were separated after fluorescent labelling on a GlycoSep N column and treated by exoglycosidases. Among the saccharide components, complex and hybrid structures terminating SO4-GalNAc-GlcNAc-Man-, and high mannose structures, with 1 to 8 mannose units attached to the oligosaccharide core (GlcNAc)2(Man)3, were found.

This paper describes the hardware requirements and design constraints that derive from unique features of body sensor networks (BSNs). Based on the BSN requirements, we examine the tradeoff between custom hardware and commercial off the shelf (COTS) designs for BSNs. The broad range of BSN applications includes situations where either custom chips or COTS design is optimal. For both types of nodes, we survey key techniques to improve energy efficiency in BSNs and identify general approaches to energy efficiency in this space.

Future change in sea surface temperature may influence climate via various air–sea feedbacks and pathways. In this study, we investigate the influence of surface seawater biogeochemical composition on the temperature dependence of number-based sea spray emission fluxes. The dependence of sea spray fluxes was investigated in different water masses (i.e., subantarctic, subtropical and frontal bloom) with contrasting biogeochemical properties across a temperature range from ambient (13–18 ∘C) to 2 ∘C using seawater circulating in a plunging jet sea spray generator. We observed a significant increase in the sea spray total concentration at temperatures below 8 ∘C. Specifically, at 2 ∘C, there was an average 4-fold increase compared to the initial concentration at ambient temperatures. This temperature dependence was more pronounced for smaller-sized sea spray particles (i.e., nucleation and Aitken modes). Moreover, the temperature dependence varied based on the seawater type and its biogeochemical properties. While the sea spray flux at moderate temperatures (8–11 ∘C) was highest in frontal-bloom waters, the effect of low temperature on the sea spray flux was highest in subtropical seawaters. The temperature dependence of the sea spray flux was found to be inversely proportional to the abundance of the cyanobacterium Synechococcus in seawater. This relationship allows for parameterizing the temperature dependence of sea spray emission fluxes based on Synechococcus, which may be utilized in future modeling exercises.

Elevated dimethyl sulfide (DMS) concentrations in the sea surface microlayer (SML) have been previously related to DMS air–sea flux anomalies in the southwestern Pacific. To further address this, DMS, its precursor dimethylsulfoniopropionate (DMSP), and ancillary variables were sampled in the SML and also subsurface water at 0.5 m depth (SSW) in different water masses east of New Zealand. Despite high phytoplankton biomass at some stations, the SML chlorophyll a enrichment factor (EF) was low (< 1.06), and DMSP was enriched at one station with DMSP EF ranging from 0.81 to 1.25. DMS in the SML was determined using a novel gas-permeable tube technique which measured consistently higher concentrations than with the traditional glass plate technique; however, significant DMS enrichment was present at only one station, with the EF ranging from 0.40 to 1.22. SML DMSP and DMS were influenced by phytoplankton community composition, with correlations with dinoflagellate and Gymnodinium biomass, respectively. DMSP and DMS concentrations were also correlated between the SML and SSW, with the difference in ratio attributable to greater DMS loss to the atmosphere from the SML. In the absence of significant enrichment, DMS in the SML did not influence DMS emissions, with the calculated air–sea DMS flux of 2.28 to 11.0 µmol m−2 d−1 consistent with climatological estimates for the region. These results confirm previous regional observations that DMS is associated with dinoflagellate abundance but indicate that additional factors are required to support significant enrichment in the SML.

Surfactants can hamper gas exchange by up to 50 % in coastal seas; however, their small-scale temporal and spatial dynamics are poorly constrained. This study investigated possible biogenic sources of surfactants in the sea surface microlayer (SML) and the underlying water at a coastal Baltic Sea site. To relate surfactant dynamics to biogenic production, we conducted two field studies (June and September 2018) and focused on amino acids and carbohydrates as the main components of organic matter derived from phytoplankton. Furthermore the composition of the biochemicals provided insights into microbial degradation dynamics and was complemented by flow-cytometry-based community analysis. In total, 76 samples were collected within an area of approximately 50 km2, allowing for high spatial resolution. Moreover, morning and afternoon sampling enabled us to investigate diel cycles. Our results reveal that surfactant concentrations were tightly coupled to the abundance of nano-phytoplankton and generally higher in September than in June, with cell abundance 3 times higher. Surfactant concentration in June was best explained by the combined effect of the particulate fraction of the non-essential amino acid serine, the concentration of particulate combined carbohydrates (PCHO), and dissolved organic carbon (DOC). Surfactant and PCHO concentrations were significantly enriched in the SML and followed a pronounced diel cycle, possibly linked to microbial processing and/or photo-processing. In contrast to June, the surfactant pool in September correlated to a diverse mixture of semi-labile organic matter components, represented best by dissolved glucose and the essential amino acid isoleucine. We conclude that the surfactant pool in surface seawater is mainly composed of organic matter components that resist rapid microbial degradation. Elevated surfactant concentrations are triggered by the release of fresh organic matter. While the effect of the resistant but less surface-active stock is potentially longer-lasting, the additive effect of labile, highly surface-active agents on gas exchange may diminish on short timescales.

The aim of the present study was to develop novel antibacterial touch surfaces through the laser texturing optimization of stainless steel. A wide range of laser fluence (2.11 J/cm2–5.64 J/cm2) and scanning interval (10 µm–30 μm) parameters were explored. The impact of surfaces with different patterns, wettability, and oxidation states on the antimicrobial behavior of Escherichia coli K-12 and biofilm hyper-producing Acinetobacter baumannii MAR002 was assessed. Modification of laser input enacted topographical changes with high scanning intervals leading to ordered surface patterns, while increasing the laser fluence to 5.64 J/cm2 created larger and less ordered plateaus and valleys. Texturing also drove a transition from a hydrophilic starting surface with a contact angle of 80.67° ± 3.35° to hydrophobic (138°–148°). Antimicrobial analysis and bioluminescence assays of E. coli, alongside biofilm forming test through A. baumannii MAR002 indicated the ability of laser texturing to produce effective bactericidal touch surfaces. No simple correlation was found between wettability and bacterial behavior, revealing that proliferation is dependent on roughness, oxidation, and wettability. For the conditions selected in this study, a laser fluence of 5.64 J/cm2 and a scanning interval of 10 µm showcased the lowest amount of recovered bacteria after 30 min.

Blood pressure (BP) and physical activity (PA) levels are inversely associated. Since genetic factors account for the observed variation in each of these traits, it is possible that part of their association may be related to common genetic and/or environmental influences. Thus, this study was designed to estimate the genetic and environmental correlations of BP and PA phenotypes in nuclear families from Muzambinho, Brazil. Families including 236 offspring (6 to 24 years) and their 82 fathers and 122 mothers (24 to 65 years) were evaluated. BP was measured, and total PA (TPA) was assessed by an interview (commuting, occupational, leisure time, and school time PA). Quantitative genetic modeling was used to estimate maximal heritability (h²), and genetic and environmental correlations. Heritability was significant for all phenotypes (systolic BP: h² = 0.37 ± 0.10, P < 0.05; diastolic BP: h² = 0.39 ± 0.09, P < 0.05; TPA: h² = 0.24 ± 0.09, P < 0.05). Significant genetic (r g) and environmental (r e) correlations were detected between systolic and diastolic BP (r g = 0.67 ± 0.12 and r e = 0.48 ± 0.08, P < 0.05). Genetic correlations between BP and TPA were not significant, while a tendency to an environmental cross-trait correlation was found between diastolic BP and TPA (r e = -0.18 ± 0.09, P = 0.057). In conclusion, BP and PA are under genetic influences. Systolic and diastolic BP share common genes and environmental influences. Diastolic BP and TPA are probably under similar environmental influences.

Purpose: In this work we present a handheld, solid-state detector based gamma camera system. We validated the camera physically and demonstrated the usefulness of the device for intra-operative detection of radiolabeled tissue. Methods: We measured the intrinsic uniformity, the intrinsic energy resolution, the system uniformity, the spatial resolution without scatter, the system planar uniformity, the detector shielding and the peak deviation according to the NEMA NU1-2001 standard. Results: The gamma camera can be used for isotopes with an energy range between 50-250 keV. A standard laptop is used to control of the camera and to visualize Preliminary clinical data show that the devices can be used successfully for a number of clinical applications. Conclusion: The performance evaluation of a novel handheld gamma camera shows good spatial resolution, sensitivity and energy resolution. Due to the small size and weight the portable device can be used for untraoperative acquisitions.

In einem Hochendemiegebiet der alveolären Echinokokkose (AE), einer Zoonose verursacht durch den Fuchsbandwurm Echinococcus multilocularis wurde in Südwestdeutschland ein Feldhase (Lepus europaeus) während der offiziellen Jagd erlegt. Bei der amtlichen Fleischuntersuchung zeigten sich makroskopisch für eine AE suspekte, subkapsulär im Leberparenchym liegende, zystenähnliche Veränderungen von ca. 1–3 cm Größe. Auch im Rahmen einer an der Hasenleber durchgeführten Ultraschall- und MRT-Untersuchung ergab sich bildmorphologisch der hochgradige Verdacht auf eine AE. Um die Struktur des Inhaltes der Zysten nicht zu zerstören, wurde auf ihre Eröffnung verzichtet. Die histologische und immunhistochemische Untersuchung durch eine Referenzpathologie für Echinokokkose konnte die Verdachtsdiagnose der AE oder die Differentialdiagnose einer Zystizerkose, verursacht durch T. crassiceps oder T. pisiformis, nicht bestätigen. Die histopathologischen Befunde sprachen für das Vorliegen eines Cholangiofibroms (Von-Meyenburg-Komplex). Dieser Befund wurde anhand der Bildmorphologie des Ultraschalls und der MRT als Caroli-Krankheit eingeordnet. Der vorliegende Fallbericht zeigt, dass als Differentialdiagnose einer AE oder einer Zystizerkose auch an ein seltenes Cholangiofibrom mit der makroskopisch-/bildmorphologischen Ausprägung einer Caroli-Krankheit gedacht werden sollte.

O presente estudo avaliou a participação de agentes bacterianos e virais em abortos em bovinos de propriedades rurais do sul de Minas Gerais. Foi realizada análise histopatológica e imuno-histoquímica dos casos de aborto recebidos pelo Setor de Patologia Veterinária da Universidade Federal de Lavras no período de 1999 a 2013. De 60 fetos analisados, em 30 (50%) foram observadas lesões microscópicas. Destes, oito apresentavam lesões compatíveis com infecção por agentes bacterianos e três apresentaram lesões sugestivas de agentes virais. Dos abortos bacterianos, um feto tinha lesões compatíveis com leptospirose, caracterizadas por icterícia e colestase, nefrite intersticial linfoplasmocítica e nefrose tubular. Sete fetos apresentaram pneumonia ou broncopneumonia purulenta; num deles havia também pleurite e peritonite fibrinosas; e em dois desses fetos houve imunomarcação para Brucella abortus. Dos três fetos com lesões sugestivas de aborto viral ocorreu imunomarcação anti-Herpesvírus bovino em um. Os resultados demonstram a ocorrência de abortos de origem bacteriana e viral na Região do estudo e que medidas profiláticas devem ser adotadas nas propriedades. O trabalho demonstra também que a imuno-histoquímica (IHQ); associada à histopatologia; é uma ferramenta útil e viável para o diagnóstico, especialmente quando provas microbiológicas e/ou sorológicas não estão disponíveis.

Descreve-se um surto de intoxicação por salinomicina em bovinos. De um grupo de 46 novilhas Simmental, 13 morreram após manifestação de incoorde-nação, andar rígido, diarréia, emagrecimento, tremores musculares, cansaço após pequenos movimentos, dispnéia e, ocasionalmente, urina escura. Os animais eram encontrados mortos ou morriam subitamente quando movimentados. As lesões macroscópicas consistiam basicamente de áreas pálidas no miocárdio, hemorragias subepicárdicas, hidropericárdio, hidrotórax, congestão e edema pulmonar e, em alguns casos, edema de declive e fígado de noz-moscada. Os principais achados microscópicos foram lesões multifocais de necrose e perda de fibras miocárdicas, que eram substituídas por tecido conjuntivo fibroso. Cerca de 9 dias antes do início da mortandade, as novilhas tinham sido medicadas para eimeriose, com um premix contendo 6% de salinomicina.

Over the past forty years, a tremendous amount of information has been gained on the mechanisms and consequences of mild traumatic brain injuries. Using sports as a laboratory to study this phenomenon, a natural recovery curve emerged, along with standards for managing concussions and returning athletes back to play. Although advances have been made in this area, investigation into recovery and return to play continues. With the increase in combat-related traumatic brain injuries in the military setting, lessons learned from sports concussion research are being applied by the Department of Defense to the assessment of blast concussions and return to duty decision making. Concussion management and treatment for military personnel can be complicated by additional combat related stressors not present in the civilian environment. Cognitive behavioral therapy is one of the interventions that has been successful in treating symptoms of postconcussion syndrome. While we are beginning to have an understanding of the impact of multiple concussions and subconcussive blows in the sports world, much is still unknown about the impact of multiple blast injuries.
