One of the most important challenges in the management of patients with schizophrenia is to ensure adherence to antipsychotic treatment. The contribution of long-acting injectables (LAI) is undeniable in this matter, but there are still some unmet medical needs not covered by these drugs (e.g. quick onset of action for patients with acute exacerbation of schizophrenia). This article summarises the pharmacokinetics, efficacy and safety of Risperidone ISM ( in situ microparticles). The aim of this review is to provide information about the potential uses of this new LAI formulation of risperidone for the treatment of schizophrenia, contextualising and diving into the published evidence. Risperidone ISM shows a rapid release which allows achieving within 12 h risperidone active moiety levels similar to those observed in the steady-state for oral risperidone treatment, achieving a mean average concentration of 38.63 ng/mL. The plasma concentration of active moiety achieved by Risperidone ISM comes with a predictable dopamine D2 receptor occupancy above 65% throughout the 28-day dosing period, which is accepted as a threshold for the efficacy of the antipsychotic treatment. This can be associated with the positive efficacy findings throughout its clinical development. In the short term, it provides an early and progressive reduction of symptoms in adult patients with acute exacerbation of schizophrenia without the need for loading doses or oral risperidone supplementation, which could contribute to reinforcing the therapeutic alliance between the patient and the psychiatrist. In addition, long-term treatment was effective, safe and well tolerated regardless of the initial disease severity or whether patients were previously treated with Risperidone ISM during an acute exacerbation or switched from stable doses of oral risperidone. Improvement and maintenance of personal and social functioning and health-related quality of life were observed in each setting, respectively. All these findings endorse Risperidone ISM as a useful and valuable treatment for the acute and maintenance management of patients with schizophrenia.

Abstract Agitation is a common and costly phenomenon associated with a number of psychiatric conditions including schizophrenia and bipolar disorder. Early identification and prompt intervention to relieve the symptoms of agitation are essential to avoid symptomatic escalation and emergence of aggressive behaviour. Recent consensus guidelines emphasise the need for non-coercive management strategies to protect the therapeutic alliance between patients and their healthcare providers—an alliance that is critical for the effective management of chronic psychiatric conditions. Rapid symptom relief and de-escalation of agitation are necessary to avoid the costly and traumatic use of coercive techniques of physical restraint and seclusion, which require admission and prolonged hospitalisation. Inhaled loxapine is approved for the treatment of acute agitation in patients with schizophrenia or bipolar disorder. Clinical studies have confirmed the efficacy, rapid onset of action, and safety and tolerability of this agent in the psychiatric emergency and hospital settings. Emerging data have indicated the potential for inhaled loxapine as a self-administered agent for use in the community setting without the direct supervision of a healthcare professional. We discuss the evolving treatment paradigm and the place of inhaled medications for acutely agitated patients both within and outside the emergency and hospital setting.

Abstract Background and aim Having decision making capacity is central to the exercise of autonomy in mental health care. The objective of this scoping review is to summarize the evidence on the capacity of people with schizophrenia or bipolar disorder to make decisions about their treatment in real life to support medical practice. Methods Systematic search of observational studies on the assessment of capacity of patients with schizophrenia, psychosis, or bipolar disorder to make healthcare and treatment‐related decisions, conducted in any clinical setting published up to January 31, 2020 was performed. Free text searches and medical subject headings in English were combined in PubMed, Scopus, CINAHL, and PsycInfo. Publications were selected as per inclusion and exclusion criteria. The Newcastle‐Ottawa Scale for observational studies was used to assess the quality of publications. Results Thirty publications were reviewed. According to the Newcastle‐Ottawa Scale criteria, the publications reviewed were good quality. Findings showed that more than 70% of schizophrenia and schizoaffective disorder outpatients understood treatment options at the point of making decisions about their illness and healthcare. Patients treated voluntarily had considerably better scores for decisional capacity than those treated involuntarily. The burden of psychiatric symptoms could compromise decisional capacity temporarily. Decision‐making capacity improved over time from admission to discharge from hospital, and with treatment among psychiatry inpatients. Schizophrenia and bipolar disorder patients could be as competent as nonpsychiatric individuals in making decisions about their treatments in everyday life. Conclusions This scoping review provides a body of evidence for healthcare professionals in need of assessing the capacity of schizophrenia and bipolar disorder patients for autonomously decide about their treatments. Decisional capacity judgements should consider variations in capacity over time and be based on the type of decision to be made, the severity of symptoms, and the specific phase of the mental disorder.

The aim of the special issue is to present theory-conscious studies of selected facets of digital cultures of evaluation across a broad range of discourses on the social web. At the same time, bringing together papers from linguistics, literary studies, and digital humanities, it is our aim to take stock of common denominators, but also differences, in method and theory, instilling discussion for a cross-disciplinary data-driven and data-intensive inquiry of valuation and evaluation within “data humanities”. The types of discourse covered will include online lay book reviews on platforms such as Goodreads and LovelyBooks, as well as reviews of non-literary “products“ such as cooking recipes, restaurant reviews, and concerts.

As a part of BIM4REN (Building Information Modelling based tools & technologies for fast and efficient RENovation of residential buildings) H2020 project, the analysis of the barriers to the use of BIM tools in renovation processes, as well as the necessary requirements to ensure a successful digital workflow is presented. This paper focuses on the Italian market where surveys, interviews and a workshop are carried out. The full study provides information by type of stakeholder, type of renovation work and the phase of the process, to instruct the development of the BIM platform in subsequent steps of BIM4REN project.

As a part of BIM4REN (Building Information Modelling based tools & technologies for fast and efficient RENovation of residential buildings) H2020 project, an analysis of the barriers of the renovation process, the potential of digitalization to overcome those barriers, and the requirements to ensure a successful digital workflow. This paper focuses on the Italian market where surveys, interviews, and a workshop were conducted, and then a diagnosis was made on the results obtained. Results show that technological innovation on BIM tools cannot be a stand-alone action to reach a full digitalization of the renovation sector, but it shall be supported by a major awareness of the actors involved, improved skills, and competences, as well as an important change of approach in the current construction practice.

GEOFIT, “Deployment of novel GEOthermal systems, technologies and tools for energy efficient building retrofitting,” is a recently launched 4-year H2020 project funded by the Innovation and Networks Executive Agency (INEA) under the call topic LCE-17-2017: Easier to install and more efficient geothermal systems for retrofitting buildings. GEOFIT is a part of INEA’s Energy Portfolio Low Carbon Economy (LCE), Renewable Energy Technologies (RET) and brings together 24 partners from 10 European countries to work on the development of novel and smart shallow geothermal systems. This paper introduces the project.

This report summarises the conduct and key findings from the fourth and final scientific workshop organised under the Mas²tering project (Multi-Agent Systems and Secured coupling of Telecom and Energy gRIds for Next Generation smart grid services), which is co-funded by the European Union under the FP7 programme. The workshop was co-located with Sustainable Places 2017 hosted by Teesside University in Middlesbrough, UK. Sustainable Places is an annual international conference focused on innovations for Energy-efficient Buildings and the wider smart grids that connect them. This fourth edition of the Mas2tering workshop series aimed at validating the project’s work to date with respect to its approach, technologies, use cases and in-progress results. For this purpose, a panel of three experts was formed and to them the project presented an Overview & Approach, Physical Testing at the ENGIE Crigen facilities, simulation of the Cardiff Grid, Project Use Cases and the Business Model Approach. Thematic issues and conclusions from the presentations and discussions are provided herein.

Residential flexibility (a.k.a demand response) is a key component of smart grids to reduce our carbon footprint, to have reliable power (balance between power and demand, and avoiding congestion) and more affordable electricity tariffs. However, to have a significant participation in the flexibility markets, households needs good price signals. Today, the electricity bill components (volumetric and capacity for both consumption and generation) are evolving and grid services are increasingly more available to households. This is due to the evolution in the energy mix, deployment of new technologies (smart meter roll-out, gradual uptake of electric vehicles, heat pumps and batteries), regional integration (interconnectors and integration of balancing markets) and evolution of society (sharing economy or Peer2peer and ubiquity of smartphones). These trends will have a quantitative impact on the different energy bills in the short term (2020) and longer term. Further investigation is also suggested to go from the qualitative analysis to a better quantitative analysis.
