This paper describes solar heterogeneous photocatalysis using immobilized TiO2 applied in the treatment of agricultural waste resulting from the application of commercial formulations of methyl parathion. The disappearance of the insecticide, as well as the formation of its metabolite, was monitored by high-performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS), while mineralization efficiency was monitored by measurements of total organic carbon (TOC). Toxicity studies were performed using the microcrustacean Artemia salina. The TOC removal efficiency by photocatalytic process was 48.5%. After 45 minutes of treatment, the removal efficiency of methyl parathion was 90%, being completely mineralized at the end of treatment. The formation and removal of the metabolite methyl paraoxon was observed during the photocatalytic process. The photocatalytic treatment resulted in increased microcrustacean mobility, indicating a reduction of acute toxicity.

O uso agrícola do lodo é uma alternativa viável para a reciclagem de nutrientes, embora haja certa preocupação com o aumento de espécies químicas solúveis originadas da mineralização da fração orgânica. Assim, para conhecer a disponibilidade de nutrientes e o risco de contaminação do solo e da água, o estudo da solução do solo é uma ferramenta valiosa. Nesses estudos, o número de variáveis utilizadas ultrapassa facilmente uma dezena, e ferramentas de análise exploratória, como a análise de componentes principais (ACP), revelam a existência ou não de amostras anômalas, de relações entre as variáveis medidas e sua contribuição relativa e de relações ou agrupamentos entre amostras. O objetivo deste trabalho foi identificar variáveis relacionadas com a solução do solo e alteradas, em razão do uso do lodo de esgoto e da adubação mineral, de forma a complementar os procedimentos para monitoramento/avaliação de áreas que recebem esse tipo de resíduo. A composição da solução do solo de uma área que recebeu lodo de esgoto por sete anos consecutivos foi estudada dos 22 aos 46 meses após a sua última aplicação. Com a solução do solo foi possível, por meio da ACP, distinguir as áreas em função da adubação aplicada. Após quatro anos da interrupção das aplicações sucessivas de lodo de esgoto, não verificou-se concentração apreciável de metais na solução do solo, embora ainda seja possível identificar traços da mineralização do resíduo. As variáveis pH, Mn2+, COD, SO4(2-), NO3- e NH4+ na solução do solo podem ser utilizadas no monitoramento de áreas tratadas com lodo de esgoto.

Abstract The objective of this work was to adapt and validate a multiresidue method for pesticide analysis, to determine the influence of the current postharvest handling steps on the degradation of pesticide residues in papaya. 'THB' papaya of the Solo group were sampled at each postharvest handling step in the packinghouse. For the validation of the multiresidue analysis in papaya, the technique used for extraction was the quick, easy, cheap, effective, rugged, and safe (QuEChERS) method, with modifications. Pesticide quantification was carried out using an ultra-high performance liquid chromatograph coupled to a triple quadrupole mass spectrometer with electrospray ionization (UHPLC-MS/MS). Fruit were analyzed before and after the handling procedures and were evaluated after ripening. The used methodology was successfully validated to detect the azoxystrobin, carbendazim, carbofuran, difenoconazole, imazalil, imidacloprid, flutriafol, prochloraz, pyraclostrobin, tebuconazole, thiabendazole, and thiacloprid pesticides in papaya. Fruit washing reduces azoxystrobin and difenoconazole residue levels in 78 to 90% and in 47 to 90% on fruit surface, respectively. Although the postharvest handling steps are ineffective in reducing the levels of thiabendazole, if this fungicide is applied at the appropriate rate, the residue levels will remain below the limits permitted by law.

The use of phosphate fertilizers is generally required for normal growth and development of crops. The cost of manufactured phosphate fertilizers has increased drastically in recent years and these are becoming out of reach for low-income farmers. The objective of this research was to select phosphate-solubilizing and phytohormone-producing bacteria to improve the growth and P uptake by the common bean (IAC Alvorada) in Red-Yellow Oxisol without the addition of phosphate fertilizer. The experimental design was completely randomized with three replicates and the following treatments: non-inoculated bean plants and plants inoculated separately with seven bacterial isolates: K24, K36, K71, T30, T79, A24, and T22. The previously treated bean plants were grown in the presence and absence of phosphate fertilization. Only the plants inoculated with the isolates K36 and T79 showed higher values for the dry weight and the quantities of P and N uptake by the shoot when cultivated in the absence of phosphate fertilizer. These results demonstrate the potential use of the bacteria T79 and K36 as inoculants for bean plants grown in non-sterilized soil with low available P content, but also indicate that P solubilization may not be the only mechanism responsible for the positive growth response.

Sugarcane is an important crop for sugar and biofuel production in Brazil. Growers depend greatly on herbicides to produce it. This experiment used herbicide physical-chemical and sugarcane plant physiological properties to simulate herbicide uptake and estimate the bioconcentration factor (BCF). The (BCF) was calculated for the steady state chemical equilibrium between the plant herbicide concentration and soil solution. Plant-water partition coefficient (sugarcane bagasse-water partition coefficient), herbicide dilution rate, metabolism and dissipation in the soil-plant system, as well as total plant biomass factors were used. In addition, we added Tebuthiuron at rate of 5.0kg a.i. ha-1 to physically test the model. In conclusion, the model showed the following ranking of herbicide uptake: sulfentrazone > picloram >tebuthiuron > hexazinone > metribuzin > simazine > ametryn > diuron > clomazone > acetochlor. Furthermore, the highest BCF herbicides showed higher Groundwater Ubiquity Score (GUS) index indicating high leaching potential. We did not find tebuthiuron in plants after three months of herbicide application

O glifosato é um herbicida sistêmico, pós-emergente, não seletivo do grupo dos organofosforados, sendo amplamente usado em pomares de macieira no sul do Brasil, podendo causar consequências negativas para microrganismos benéficos do solo. O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar a capacidade de biodegradação do glifosato pela microbiota de solos de pomares de macieira, com diferentes históricos de aplicação do produto. Para isso, amostras de solos da região de Vacaria, RS, foram utilizadas, cuja biodegradação do glifosato foi avaliada monitorando a liberação de CO2 pelos microrganismos durante 32 dias, bem como quantificando os resíduos de glifosato e seu metabólito, o ácido aminometilfosfônico (AMPA), no início e no final do período pela extração seguida de análise por cromatografia líquida de alta eficiência. Os resultados evidenciaram que houve degradação do glifosato pelos microrganismos edáficos durante o período avaliado com formação do metabólito AMPA. O glifosato diminuiu o número de bactérias do solo, porém favoreceu o aumento da atividade microbiana. As bactérias presentes nos solos com histórico de menor tempo de aplicação do herbicida apresentaram maior capacidade de degradação do produto, quando comparadas àquelas existentes em solos com maior período de aplicação de glifosato.

The use of simulation models is probably the most efficient means for predicting the behavior of pesticides in the soil-plant-water system. The CMLS (Chemical Movement in Layered Soils) simulation model for predicting the fate of pesticides was used for studying the behavior of tebuthiuron, a herbicide used in sugar cane crops, from a sampling grid with 111 sampling points 200 m apart from one another and encompassing three types of soil: Ustic Quartzipsamment, Rhodic Hapludox and Typic Hapludox, all with medium and clay textures. The 373 points assessed by the simulator, generated from samples coming from the original grid and through the geostatistical methods of variography and ordinary kriging, returned the depth values reached by the herbicide after six years of simulation (1989-1995). For the Ustic Quartzipsamment, tebuthiuron, in four simulated points, returned depth values above 43 m and a maximum 50 m, with a certain amount of the product still remaining in the soil that was close to 10% of the original 1.1 kg ha-1 applied. Results from the column assay used for validating the model showed that the model overestimated the depth reached by the herbicide in 6.6% as compared to the column value for the Ustic Quartzipsamment. The depth was underestimated in 4.5% and 20% for the Typic Hapludox and the Rhodic Hapludox, respectively. These data support the adequacy of the model for assessing the fate of tebuthiuron in both Ustic Quartzipsamment and Typic Hapludox.O uso de modelos de simulação é provavelmente a maneira mais eficiente para predizer o comportamento de agrotóxicos no sistema solo/água/planta. O modelo de simulação de destino de agrotóxicos CMLS (Chemical Movement in Layered Soils), foi usado para estudar o comportamento do herbicida tebuthiuron, utilizado na cultura de cana-de-açúcar, a partir de uma grade de amostragem composta de 111 pontos amostrais, equi-espaçados de 200 m e englobando três tipos de solo: Neossolo Quartzarênico (RQ), Latossolo Vermelho distroférrico (LVdf) e Latossolo Vermelho distrófico (LVd), texturas média e argilosa. Os 373 pontos avaliados pelo simulador, gerados das amostras da grade original e através dos métodos geoestatísticos da variografia e krigagem, produziram valores de profundidade atingida pelo herbicida, após seis anos de simulação (1989-1995). Para Neossolo Quartzarênico (RQ), o tebuthiuron, em quatro pontos simulados, apresentou valores de profundidade acima de 43 m e com máximo de 50 m, com uma quantidade de produto permanecendo ainda no solo, próximo a 10% do valor aplicado de 1,1 kg ha-1. Resultados provenientes do ensaio em coluna, usados para a validação do modelo, mostraram que o mesmo superestimou em 6,66% a profundidade atingida pelo herbicida quando comparado ao valor produzido pela coluna, para o Neossolo Quartzarênico (RQ), e subestimou com valores de 4,5% e 20,0%, para o Latossolo Vermelho distrófico (LVd) e o Latossolo Vermelho-distroférrico (LVdf), respectivamente. Esses dados confirmam, para o Neossolo Quartzarênico(RQ) e o Latossolo Vermelho-distrófico (LVd) a adequação do modelo, na avaliação do destino do herbicida.

O paclobutrazol, um regulador de crescimento vegetal com propriedades fungicidas, é muito utilizado na região Nordeste do Brasil em áreas de produção de frutíferas. Este composto pode permanecer estável por vários meses após sua aplicação no solo, sendo sua meia vida na água superior a três semanas. Corpos de água superficiais nas proximidades das culturas são portanto susceptíveis de serem contaminados pelo paclobutrazol, com o risco de promover efeitos adversos para a fauna aquática e para a saúde humana. No presente trabalho foi estudada a bioconcentração e algumas alterações bioquímicas, medidas pela atividade das enzimas transaminase glutâmico-oxalacética (TGO), lactato desidrogenase (LDH) e glutationa S-transferase (GST) em tecidos do peixe pacú prata (Metynnis argenteus), exposto ao paclobutrazol durante 28 dias. O paclobutrazol aumentou a atividade de LDH e GST no fígado para as concentrações de 3 mg L-1 (28º dia de exposição) e 30 mg L-1 (7º dia de exposição), respectivamente. No 28º dia, a concentração de paclobutrazol no músculo atingiu níveis residuais de 166 mg kg-1 para a concentração média determinada na água de 2,7 mg L-1, estimando-se um fator de bioconcentração (FBC) para a situação de equilíbrio equivalente a 73. A medida da atividade de LDH e GST pode ser utilizada como biomarcador de exposição ao paclobutrazol. Esta exposição deve estar em situações extremas para proporcionar risco significativo em humanos que se alimentam de peixes contendo resíduos do agroquímico.

The region of Ribeirão Preto, São Paulo State, Brazil, is located over recharge area of the Guarany aquifer, the most important source of groundwater in the South Central region of the country. This region is also the most important sugarcane producing area of the country which produces a large amount of the ethanol. This study was conducted to determine the potential risk of herbicide groundwater contamination. The leaching risk potential of herbicides to groundwater was conducted using the weather simulator “Weather Generator” (WGEN) coupled with the model “Chemical Movement Trough Layered Soils” (CMLS94). The following herbicides were evaluated in clayey and sandy soils (Typic Haplorthox and Typic Quartzipsamment soils) found in the region: ametryn (N-ethyl-N'-(1- methylethyl)-6-(methylthio)-1,3,5-triazine-2,4-diamine), atrazine (6-chloro-N-ethyl-N'-(1-methylethyl)-1,3,5-triazine- 2,4-diamine), clomazone (2-[(2-chlorophenyl)methyl]-4,4-dimethyl-3-isoxazolidinone), diuron (3,4-dichlorophenyl)- N,N-dimethylurea), halosulfuron (3-chloro-5-[(4,6-dimethoxy-2-pyrimidinyl)amino]carbonyl], hexazinone (3- cyclohexyl-6-(dimethylamino)-1-methyl-1,3,5-triazine-2,4 (1H,3H)-dione), imazapic ((±)-2-[4,5-dihydro-4-methyl-4- (1-methylethyl)-5-oxo-1H-imidazol-2-yl]-5-methyl-3-pyridinecarboxylic acid), imazapyr ((±)-2-[4,5-dihydro-4-methyl- 4-(1-methylethyl)-5-oxo-1H-imidazol-2-yl]-3-pyridinecarboxylic acid), MCPA (4-chloro-2-methylphenoxy)acetic acid), metribuzin (4-amino-6-(1,1-dimethylethyl)-3-(methylthio)-1,2,4-triazin-5(4H)-one), MSMA (Amonosodium salt of MAA), paraquat (1,1'-dimethyl-4,4'-bipyridinium ion), pendimethalin (N-(1-ethylpropyl)-3,4-dimethyl-2,6- dinitrobenzenamine), picloram (4-amino-3,5,6-trichloro-2-pyridinecarboxylic acid), simazine (6-chloro-N,N'-diethyl- 1,3,5-triazine-2,4-diamine), sulfentrazone [N-[2,4-dichloro-5-[4-(difluoromethyl)-4,5-dihydro-3-methyl-5-oxo-1H- 1,2,4-triazol-1-yl]phenyl]methanesulfonamide], and tebuthiuron [N-[5-(1,1-dimethylethyl)-1,3,4-thiadiazol-2-yl]-N,N'- dimethylurea]. Results obtained by our simulation study have shown that the herbicides picloram, tebuthiuron, and metribuzin have the highest leaching potential, in either sandy or clayey soils, with picloram reaching the root zone of sugarcane at 0.6m in less than 150 days.
