Objective A meta-analysis was conducted to assess the efficacy and safety of cryoablation (CRA) compared with radiofrequency ablation (RFA).Methods A systematic search of PubMed, EMBASE, Cochrane Library, Wanfang, CNKI, and VIP databases was conducted to identify clinical controlled studies comparing CRA versus RFA for hepatic malignancies up to July 2022. The meta-analysis was performed using RevMan 5.3.Results A comprehensive analysis was conducted on 8 clinical controlled studies involving a total of 943 patients. There were no significant differences in the incidence of complications, complete ablation of lesions, local recurrence, and 1-year survival between the CRA and RFA groups (OR = 0.98, 95%CI: 0.61–1.55, p = 0.92; OR = 1.08, 95%CI: 0.62–1.90, p = 0.78; OR = 1.28, 95%CI: 0.49–3.36, p = 0.61; and OR = 1.14, 95%CI: 0.63–2.06, p = 0.66, respectively).Conclusion The efficacy and safety profile of CRA was comparable to that of RFA in the context of ablation therapy for hepatic malignancies. These findings suggested that CRA may be a valuable alternative to RFA in the treatment of hepatic malignancies.

Abstract Background Evidence suggests that hepatocyte mitochondrial dysfunction leads to abnormal lipid metabolism, redox imbalance, and programmed cell death, driving the onset and progression of non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH). Identifying hub mitochondrial genes linked to NASH may unveil potential therapeutic targets. Methods Mitochondrial hub genes implicated in NASH were identified via analysis using 134 algorithms. Results The Random Forest algorithm (RF), the most effective among the 134 algorithms, identified three genes: Aldo–keto reductase family 1 member B10 (AKR1B10), thymidylate synthase (TYMS), and triggering receptor expressed in myeloid cell 2 (TREM2). They were upregulated and positively associated with genes promoting inflammation, genes involved in lipid synthesis, fibrosis, and nonalcoholic steatohepatitis activity scores in patients with NASH. Moreover, using these three genes, patients with NASH were accurately categorized into cluster 1, exhibiting heightened disease severity, and cluster 2, distinguished by milder disease activity. Conclusion These three genes are pivotal mitochondrial genes implicated in NASH progression.

Objective To investigate the correlation between the serum levels of ischaemia-modified albumin (IMA) and disease severity in rats with acute pancreatitis (AP). Methods A rat AP model was established and blood samples from each group were analysed at different time points. After the experiment, the pancreatic tissues of the rats were collected for pathological examination and the measurement of protein levels of NF-κB and NF-κB p65. Serum levels of amylase (α-AMY), tumour necrosis factor-α (TNF-α), interleukin (IL)-6 and IL-8 were also compared between groups of rats. Results The serum IMA concentration in the severe acute pancreatitis (SAP) group was greater than that in the mild acute pancreatitis (MAP) group. The levels of the NF-κB and NF-κB p65 proteins were increased in the MAP and SAP groups in a time-dependent manner. α-AMY, TNF-α and IL-6 were increased at all time points in the MAP and SAP groups. The increases were greatest at 24 h in the SAP group. In terms of pathological changes in the pancreas, renal and lung tissues, the damage in the SAP group was more obvious than that in the MAP group. Conclusions Serum IMA level was associated with inflammatory markers and NF-κB p65 in rats with AP.

Abstract Background The gastric conduit is the most commonly used replacement organ for reconstruction after minimally invasive McKeown esophagectomy. Although the optimal route of gastric conduit remains controversial, the posterior mediastinal route is physiologically preferable but is not without disadvantages. Here, we report the safety and efficacy of a method of gastric conduit reconstruction via the anterior of the pulmonary hilum route. Methods We have used the anterior of the pulmonary hilum route since 2021. This procedure involves pulling the gastric conduit up through a substernal tunnel between the right thoracic cavity and the abdominal cavity and passing it into the neck via the anterior of the pulmonary hilum route. In this retrospective study, we compared the clinical outcomes between 20 patients who underwent this procedure and 20 patients who underwent the posterior mediastinal route from 2021 to 2022. Results No mortality was reported in either group. No significant differences were observed between the two groups in duration of surgery, blood loss, incidence of postoperative complications, and postoperative hospital stay. As a result of the anterior of the pulmonary hilum route, the primary tumor bed and lymph node drainage area were effectively bypassed, which facilitates postoperative adjuvant radiotherapy or chemoradiotherapy. The distance of the gastric conduit accompanying the airway was significantly shorter in the anterior of the pulmonary hilum route group. Conclusions Our method is considered to be a safe and useful technique for the reconstruction of gastric conduit.

Thermal condition affects the development and growth of ectotherms. The stenothermic honeybee brood, particularly the prepupae, are sensitive to low rearing temperature. The fat body plays important roles in energy reserve and metabolism during the honeybee brood development. To date, the fat body metabolic changes in prepupae responding to cold stress have not been completely understood. In this study, the ultra-performance liquid chromatography coupled with tandem mass spectrometry (UPLC-MS/MS)-based non-target metabolome was analyzed between the cold-treated (CT, 20 °C, 36 h) and control (CK, 35 °C) fat body in prepupal honeybees. The fat body metabolomic data showed that the levels of 1860 and 254 metabolites were significantly increased and decreased, respectively, in cold-stressed prepupae. These altered metabolites, glutamine, glutamic acid, pyroglutamic acid, and oxidized glutathione, were significantly enriched into glutamine metabolism and glutathione metabolism pathways. Furthermore, the expression levels of glutamine metabolism-related genes, glutaminase (GLS), glutamate dehydrogenase (GDH), and gamma-glutamyl transferase (GGT-1 and GGT-7), were significantly decreased in cold-exposed prepupae compared with the control groups. Meanwhile, the oxidized glutathione (GSSG), but not the reduced glutathione (GSH) content, was increased in the cold-exposed group compared with controls. Collectively, our data revealed the fat body metabolomic changes in larva-to-pupa transition when exposed to cold stress. Our data provided new insights into stenothermic honeybee sensitivity to cold, characterized by perturbation of glutamine metabolism and oxidative stress.

Abstract Background Ferroptosis, is characterized by lipid peroxidation of fatty acids in the presence of iron ions, which leads to cell apoptosis. This leads to the disruption of metabolic pathways, ultimately resulting in liver dysfunction. Although ferroptosis is linked to nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH), understanding the key ferroptosis-related genes (FRGs) involved in NASH remains incomplete. NASH may be targeted therapeutically by identifying the genes responsible for ferroptosis. Methods To identify ferroptosis-related genes and develop a ferroptosis-related signature (FeRS), 113 machine-learning algorithm combinations were used. Results The FeRS constructed using the Generalized Linear Model Boosting algorithm and Gradient Boosting Machine algorithms exhibited the best prediction performance for NASH. Eight FRGs, with ZFP36 identified by the algorithms as the most crucial, were incorporated into in FeRS. ZFP36 is significantly enriched in various immune cell types and exhibits significant positive correlations with most immune signatures. Conclusion ZFP36 is a key FRG involved in NASH pathogenesis.

Honeybee is a crucial pollinator in nature, and plays an indispensable role in both agricultural production and scientific research. In recent decades, honeybee was challenged with health problems by biotic and abiotic stresses. As a key ecological factor, temperature has been proved to have an impact on the survival and production efficiency of honeybees. Previous studies have demonstrated that low temperature stress can affect honeybee pupation and shorten adult longevity. However, the molecular mechanism underlying the effects of low temperatures on honeybee growth and development during their developmental period remain poorly understood. In this paper, the weighted gene co-expression analysis (WGCNA) was employed to explore the molecular mechanisms underpinnings of honeybees’ respond to low temperatures (20°C) during four distinct developmental stages: large-larvae, prepupae, early-pupae and mid-pupae. Through an extensive transcriptome analysis, thirteen gene co-expression modules were identified and analyzed in relation to honeybee development and stress responses. The darkorange module was found to be associated with low temperature stress, with its genes primarily involved in autophagy-animal, endocytosis and MAPK signaling pathways. Four hub genes were identified within this module, namely, loc726497, loc409791, loc410923, and loc550857, which may contribute to honeybee resistance to low temperature and provide insight into the underlying mechanism. The gene expression patterns of grey60 and black modules were found to correspond to the developmental stages of prepupae and early-pupae, respectively, with the hub genes loc409494, loc725756, loc552457, loc726158, Ip3k and Lcch3 in grey60 module likely involved in brain development, and the hub genes loc410555 in black module potentially related to exoskeleton development. The brown module genes exhibited a distinct pattern of overexpression in mid-pupae specimens, with genes primarily enriched in oxidative phosphorylation, citrate cycle and other pathways, which may be related to the formation of bee flying muscle. No related gene expression module was found for mature larvae stage. These findings provide valuable insights into the developmental process of honeybees at molecular level during the capped brood stage.

Background/Aims:This study aimed to explore the effect of gut microbiota-regulated Kupffer cells (KCs) on colorectal cancer (CRC) liver metastasis. Methods: A series of in vivo and in vitro researches were showed to demonstrate the gut microbiota and its possible mechanism in CRC liver metastasis. Results: Fewer liver metastases were identified in the ampicillin-streptomycin-colistin and colistin groups. Increased proportions of Parabacteroides goldsteinii, Bacteroides vulgatus, Bacteroides thetaiotaomicron, and Bacteroides uniformis were observed in the colistin group. The significant expansion of KCs was identified in the ampicillin-streptomycin-colistin and colistin groups. B. vulgatus levels were positively correlated with KC levels. More liver metastases were observed in the vancomycin group. An increased abundance of Parabacteroides distasonis and Proteus mirabilis and an obvious reduction of KCs were noted in the vancomycin group. P. mirabilis levels were negatively related to KC levels. The number of liver metastatic nodules was increased in the P. mirabilis group and decreased in the B. vulgatus group. The number of KCs decreased in the P. mirabilis group and increased in the B. vulgatus group. In vitro, as P. mirabilis or B. vulgatus doses increased, there was an opposite effect on KC proliferation in dose- and time-dependent manners. P. mirabilis induced CT26 cell migration by controlling KC proliferation, whereas B. vulgatus prevented this migration. Conclusions: An increased abundance of P. mirabilis and decreased amount of B. vulgatus play key roles in CRC liver metastasis, which might be related to KC reductions in the liver.

Abstract Background Estimates of cervical lymph node (LN) metastasis in patients with middle and lower thoracic esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) are important. A nomogram is a useful tool for individualized prediction. Methods A total of 235 patients were enrolled in this study. Univariate and multivariate analyses were performed to screen for independent risk factors and construct a nomogram to predict the risk of cervical LN metastasis. The nomogram performance was assessed by discrimination, calibration, and clinical use. Results Totally, four independent predictors, including the maximum diameter of tumor, paraesophageal lymph node status, recurrent laryngeal nerve lymph node status, and the CT-reported cervical LN status, were enrolled in the nomogram. The AUC of the nomogram model in the training and validation dataset were 0.833 (95% CI 0.762–0.905), 0.808 (95% CI 0.696–0.920), respectively. The calibration curve demonstrated a strong consistency between nomogram and clinical findings in predicting cervical LN metastasis. Decision curve analysis demonstrated that the nomogram was clinically useful. Conclusion We developed a nomogram that could be conveniently used to predict the individualized risk of cervical LN metastasis in patients with middle and lower thoracic ESCC.

The honeybees are the most important pollinator in the production of crops and fresh produce. Temperature affects the survival of honeybees, and determines the quality of their development, which is of great significance for beekeeping production. Yet, little was known about how does low temperature stress during development stage cause bee death and any sub-lethal effect on subsequent. Early pupal stage is the most sensitive stage to low temperature in pupal stage. In this study, early pupal broods were exposed to 20°C for 12, 16, 24, and 48 h, followed by incubation at 35°C until emergence. We found that 48 h of low temperature duration cause 70% of individual bees to die. Although the mortality at 12 and 16 h seems not very high, the association learning ability of the surviving individuals was greatly affected. The brain slices of honeybees showed that low temperature treatment could cause the brain development of honeybees to almost stop. Gene expression profiles between low temperature treatment groups (T24, T48) and the control revealed that 1,267 and 1,174 genes were differentially expressed respectively. Functional enrichment analysis of differentially expressed genes showed that the differential expression of Map3k9, Dhrs4, and Sod-2 genes on MAPK and peroxisome signaling pathway caused oxidative damage to the honeybee head. On the FoxO signal pathway, InsR and FoxO were upregulated, and JNK, Akt, and Bsk were downregulated; and on the insect hormone synthesis signal pathway, Phm and Spo genes were downregulated. Therefore, we speculate that low temperature stress affects hormone regulation. It was detected that the pathways related to the nervous system were Cholinergic synapse, Dopaminergic synapse, GABAergic synapse, Glutamatergic synapse, Serotonergic synapse, Neurotrophin signaling pathway, and Synaptic vesicle cycle. This implies that the synaptic development of honeybees is quite possibly greatly affected by low temperature stress. Understanding how low temperature stress affects the physiology of bee brain development and how it affects bee behavior provide a theoretical foundation for a deeper comprehension of the temperature adaptation mechanism that underlies the “stenothermic” development of social insects, and help to improve honeybee management strategies to ensure the healthy of colony.

Whether the development of honeybee broods is healthy or not determines the productivity of bee colonies. Pupation is a critical period in the development of holometabolous insects, characterized by the transition from larva to pupa, and its sensitivity to high temperature was investigated in Apis cerana worker bees. Mature larvae (ML), the first and second days of prepupa (PP1 and PP2), and the first day of pupa (P1) were exposed to 40°C for varied durations of time. The mortality, development duration, birth weight, size of the body, and appendages of eclosed Apis cerana worker bees were measured. Results showed that PP1 had the highest mortality, the lowest birth weight, and the longest development duration among the pupation stages. When exposed to 40°C for 12 h and 16 h, more than 28 and 84% of PP1 failed to complete development, respectively. Additionally, high-temperature treatment had a significant effect on the length of the proboscis, the size of the forewing, and the size of the hind leg. These findings suggest that ML and PP1 are crucial checkpoints for wing and appendage (proboscis and legs) development and provide insights into the mechanisms of honeybee brood susceptibility to high-temperature stress in the context of global warming.

Abstract Purposes Surgical site infection (SSI) after colorectal surgery is a frequent complication associated with the increase in morbidity, medical expenses, and mortality. To date, there is no nationwide large-scale database of SSI after colorectal surgery in China. The aim of this study was to determine the incidence of SSI after colorectal surgery in China and to further evaluate the related risk factors. Methods Two multicenter, prospective, cross-sectional studies covering 55 hospitals in China and enrolling adult patients undergoing colorectal surgery were conducted from May 1 to June 30 of 2018 and the same time of 2019. The demographic and perioperative characteristics were collected, and the main outcome was SSI within postoperative 30 days. Multivariable logistic regressions were conducted to predict risk factors of SSI after colorectal surgery. Results In total, 1046 patients were enrolled and SSI occurred in 74 patients (7.1%). In the multivariate analysis with adjustments, significant factors associated with SSI were the prior diagnosis of hypertension (OR, 1.903; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.088–3.327, P = 0.025), national nosocomial infection surveillance risk index score of 2 or 3 (OR, 3.840; 95% CI, 1.926–7.658, P

Low-rank matrix completion aims to recover an unknown matrix from a subset of observed entries. In this paper, we solve the problem via optimization of the matrix manifold. Specially, we apply QR factorization to retraction during optimization. We devise two fast algorithms based on steepest gradient descent and conjugate gradient descent, and demonstrate their superiority over the promising baseline with the ratio of at least 24%.

Abstract Background Both diaphragmatic hernia and thoracic gastropericardial fistula rarely occur simultaneously in patients with radical esophagectomy. Case presentation A 72-year-old man presented to our hospital with 1 day of nausea, vomiting and acute left chest pain. He had radical esophagectomy (Sweet approach) for esophageal cancer 18 years ago. Computed tomography (CT) of the chest revealed diaphragmatic hernias and air collection within the pericardial space. While an operation of diaphragmatic hernia repair was decisively performed to prevent further serious complications, unusually, a thoracic gastropericardial fistula was also found unusually. Conclusion Diaphragmatic hernia and thoracic gastropericardial fistula may occasionally coexist in patients with esophagectomy. Upper GI radiograph with a water-soluble contrast agent is a better diagnostic tool than CT in visualizing the fistula.

Colorectal cancer (CRC) appears to be rather refractory to checkpoint blockers except the patient with deficient in mismatch repair (dMMR). Therefore, new advances in the treatment of most mismatch repair proficiency (pMMR) (also known as microsatellite stability, MSS) type of CRC patients are considered to be an important clinical issue associated with programmed death 1 (PD-1) inhibitors. In the present study, we evaluated the effects of gut microbiome of MSS-type CRC tumor-bearing mice treated with different antibiotics on PD-1 antibody immunotherapy response. Our results confirmed that the gut microbiome played a key role in the treatment of CT26 tumor-bearing mice with PD-1 antibody. After PD-1 antibody treatment, the injection of antibiotics counteracted the efficacy of PD-1 antibody in inhibiting tumor growth when compared with the Control group (mice were treated with sterile drinking water). Bacteroides_sp._CAG:927 and Bacteroidales_S24-7 were enriched in Control group. Bacteroides_sp._CAG:927, Prevotella_sp._CAG: 1031 and Bacteroides were enriched in Coli group [mice were treated with colistin (2 mg/ml)], Prevotella_sp._CAG:485 and Akkermansia_muciniphila were enriched in Vanc group [mice were treated with vancomycin alone (0.25 mg/ml)]. The metabolites were enriched in the glycerophospholipid metabolic pathway consistent with the metagenomic prediction pathway in Vanc group, Prevotella_sp._CAG:485 and Akkermansia may maintain the normal efficacy of PD-1 antibody by affecting the metabolism of glycerophospholipid. Changes in gut microbiome leaded to changes in glycerophospholipid metabolism level, which may affect the expression of immune-related cytokines IFN-γ and IL-2 in the tumor microenvironment, resulting in a different therapeutic effect of PD-1 antibody. Our findings show that changes in the gut microbiome affect the glycerophospholipid metabolic pathway, thereby regulating the therapeutic potential of PD-1 antibody in the immunotherapy of MSS-type CRC tumor-bearing mice.

Many species of high-altitude plateaus tend to be narrowly distributed along river valleys at lower elevations due to a limitation of suitable habitats. The eastern honeybee (Apis cerana) is such a species and this study explored the effects of long and narrow geographic distributions on honeybee populations. Genetic differentiation and diversity were assessed across populations of the southeastern Qinghai-Tibet Plateau. A total of 492 honeybee samples from eight sampling sites in four valleys were analyzed for the genetic differentiation and diversity of 31 microsatellite loci and mitochondrial tRNAleu-COII fragments. The following results were obtained: (1) Microsatellite genetic differentiation coefficients (FST) ranged from 0.06 to 0.16, and mitochondrial FST estimates ranged from 0.18 to 0.70 for different sampling sites in the same valley, indicating genetic differentiation. (2) Honeybees in adjacent valleys were also genetically differentiated. The FST of microsatellites and mitochondria were 0.04–0.29 and 0.06–0.76, respectively. (3) Likely a result of small population sizes, the observed genetic diversity was low. The observed impedance of honeybee gene flow among valleys increased both genetic differentiation and population numbers in the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau. This study contributes significantly to the current understanding of the mechanism underlying population genetic differentiation and highlights the potential effects of utilizing genetic resources that are subject to the ecological conditions of the long and narrow geographic distributions of plateau-valley landforms.

Varroa destructor is by far the most serious threat to the western honey bee, Apis mellifera. A screen bottom board, a cultural method for mite control, is a modified bottom board with a screen that allows mites to fall onto a sticky board, or the grass or soil below the screen. Whether or not a screen bottom board can reduce varroa significantly has been controversial. Most studies show a trend of lower varroa populations in colonies with these boards, but the results are usually not statistically significant. To understand whether the negative results have been due to small sample sizes, or because the board is actually ineffective, we conducted a meta-analysis with seven published studies with a total of 145 colonies. Meta-analysis showed that the confidence intervals of the combined effect sizes were negative with a Hedges’ g of −1.09 (SE 0.39, 95% CI −2.0 to −0.19, p < 0.01), which suggests that the varroa population in colonies with screen bottom boards is significantly lower compared to those with traditional wooden floors. We thus conclude that the screen bottom board does have a significantly negative impact on the varroa population and can be part of tool kits for mite control.

Drill rod straightness has to be strictly controlled and the maximum bending degree detection needs to be used in the straightening process. The mechanical bending degree measurement depends on machinery instruments and workers’ experience, often with low efficiency and precision. While the optical inspection, as a non-contact detection method, with higher precision and lower installation accuracy requirements, is frequently applied in the online detection system. Based on this, an enhanced bending degree detection system for a drill rod is proposed in this paper. Compared to the existing detection system, the main progress is to use a two-dimensional laser to quickly obtain arc profile data and fit with ellipse. Segment inspection idea is also utilized is this system as the camera that could obtain the whole drill rod in one shot needs extremely high resolution and price. A specialized algorithm is designed to fit the cross-section shape and whole centerline displacement based on the least square method. Some laboratory tests are conducted to verify this detection system, findings of which are compared to manual measured results. The maximum bending degree error is 2.14 mm and the maximum position error is 8.21 mm, which are both within the tolerance of error. Those results show the feasibility and precision of this enhanced detection system.

Honey bees (Apis mellifera) are key pollinators, playing a vital role in ecosystem maintenance and stability of crop yields. Recently, reduced honey bee survival has attracted intensive attention. Among all other honey bee stresses, temperature is a fundamental ecological factor that has been shown to affect honey bee survival. Yet, the impact of low temperature stress during capped brood on brood mortality has not been systematically investigated. In addition, little was known about how low temperature exposure during capped brood affects subsequent adult longevity. In this study, capped worker broods at 12 different developmental stages were exposed to 20°C for 12, 24, 36, 48, 60, 72, 84 and 96 hours, followed by incubation at 35°C until emergence. We found that longer durations of low temperature during capped brood led to higher mortality, higher incidences of misorientation inside cells and shorter worker longevity. Capped brood as prepupae and near emergence were more sensitive to low-temperature exposure, while capped larvae and mid-pupal stages showed the highest resistance to low-temperature stress. Our results suggest that prepupae and pupae prior to eclosion are the most sensitive stages to low temperature stress, as they are to other stresses, presumably due to many physiological changes related to metamorphosis happening during these two stages. Understanding how low-temperature stress affects honey bee physiology and longevity can improve honey bee management strategies.
