Abstract Quantifying emesis in Suncus murinus (S. murinus) has traditionally relied on direct observation or reviewing recorded behaviour, which are laborious, time-consuming processes that are susceptible to operator error. With rapid advancements in deep learning, automated animal behaviour quantification tools with high accuracy have emerged. In this study, we pioneere the use of both three-dimensional convolutional neural networks and self-attention mechanisms to develop the Automatic Emesis Detection (AED) tool for the quantification of emesis in S. murinus, achieving an overall accuracy of 98.92%. Specifically, we use motion-induced emesis videos as training datasets, with validation results demonstrating an accuracy of 99.42% for motion-induced emesis. In our model generalisation and application studies, we assess the AED tool using various emetics, including resiniferatoxin, nicotine, copper sulphate, naloxone, U46619, cyclophosphamide, exendin-4, and cisplatin. The prediction accuracies for these emetics are 97.10%, 100%, 100%, 97.10%, 98.97%, 96.93%, 98.91%, and 98.41%, respectively. In conclusion, employing deep learning-based automatic analysis improves efficiency and accuracy and mitigates human bias and errors. Our study provides valuable insights into the development of deep learning neural network models aimed at automating the analysis of various behaviours in S. murinus, with potential applications in preclinical research and drug development.

To assess the impact of different heights of the viaduct on air pollutant dispersion and the prediction accuracy of pollutant concentration in urban street canyons, simulation results based on LES and RANS models are analyzed. The presence of a viaduct generated a poorly ventilated region underneath it, and RANS significantly underestimated the wind speed and grossly overestimated the pollutant concentration. LES gives better results for the flow pattern, distribution of turbulent kinetic energy and mean pollutant concentration. With a fluctuation of less than 15% of the pollutant concentration, both RANS and LES cases show that an increase in the viaduct height has a weak impact on the concentration of pollutants in most areas of the canyon except windward, and cases with a viaduct height of 0.75H had the lowest predicted pollutant concentration relative to other cases with a viaduct as a result of better ventilation. In addition, LES found a subregion of pollutant accumulation above the ground, but RANS did not.

Abstract Glial cell-mediated neuroinflammation and neuronal attrition are highly correlated with cognitive impairment in Alzheimer’s disease. YKL-40 is a secreted astrocytic glycoprotein that serves as a diagnostic biomarker of Alzheimer’s disease. High levels of YKL-40 are associated with either advanced Alzheimer’s disease or the normal aging process. However, the functional role of YKL-40 in Alzheimer’s disease development has not been firmly established. In a 5xFAD mouse model of Alzheimer’s disease, we observed increased YKL-40 expression in the cerebrospinal fluid of 7-month-old mice and was correlated with activated astrocytes. In primary astrocytes, Aβ1-42 upregulated YKL-40 in a dose-dependent manner and was correlated with PI3-K signaling pathway activation. Furthermore, primary neurons treated with YKL-40 and/or Aβ1-42 resulted in significant synaptic degeneration, reduced dendritic complexity, and impaired electrical parameters. More importantly, astrocyte-specific knockout of YKL-40 over a period of 7 days in symptomatic 5xFAD mice could effectively reduce amyloid plaque deposition in multiple brain regions. This was also associated with attenuated glial activation, reduced neuronal attrition, and restored memory function. These biological phenotypes could be explained by enhanced uptake of Aβ1-42 peptides, increased rate of Aβ1-42 degradation and acidification of lysosomal compartment in YKL-40 knockout astrocytes. Our results provide new insights into the role of YKL-40 in Alzheimer’s disease pathogenesis and demonstrate the potential of targeting this soluble biomarker to alleviate cognitive defects in symptomatic Alzheimer’s disease patients.

Abstract Introduction Stereotactic body radiation therapy (SBRT) is associated with high local control rates in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). This study reports the outcomes of SBRT compared to surgical resection (SR) and percutaneous ablation (PA) for treatment‐naïve, solitary HCCs ≤3 cm. Methods This was a retrospective study of patients with BCLC stage 0/A HCC with a single ≤3 cm lesion, treated with curative intent between 2016 and 2020. SBRT was used for patients considered unsuitable for SR or PA. The co‐primary endpoints were progression‐free survival (PFS) and overall survival (OS). The secondary endpoints were treatment‐related clinical toxicity rates and local control (LC) rates. Results There were 112 patients included in this study. SBRT was delivered in 36 patients (32.1%), 51 had PA (45.5%) and 25 underwent SR (22.3%). Median follow‐up was 23 months (range, 3–60 months) from diagnosis. The 3‐year PFS and OS were 67% and 69% following SBRT, 55% and 80% following PA, and 85% and 100% following SR, respectively. Patients in the SR cohort had significantly better 3‐year PFS and OS compared to SBRT and PA groups (p = 0.03 and p = 0.04, respectively). There was no significant difference in PFS (p = 0.15) or OS (p = 0.23) between SBRT and PA treated patients. The 3‐year LC rate for the entire cohort was 98%. Conclusions In patients with treatment‐naïve, early‐stage solitary HCCs ≤3 cm, SBRT was associated with comparable PFS, OS and LC outcomes to PA. SBRT should be considered as a curative intent therapy to avoid treatment stage migration in this favourable prognostic cohort of patients.

In diabetes mellitus (DM), the prevalence of gastrointestinal (GI) complications, including constipation, diarrhoea, gastroparesis, and/or enteropathy, can be up to ~75%. In this study, we compared three zebrafish larvae models of DM and established an analytical protocol for GI motility. Larvae were fed with either a standard diet (SD; control), or one of three diets to induce a DM-like phenotype: excessive feeding of SD food (ED), a high-fat diet (HFD), or exposing SD-fed larvae to 30 mmol/L glucose (SDG). DM was confirmed using a body-mass index, assessment of adipose deposit areas, two glucose assays, and one insulin assay. An analytical technique, whereby GI motility was quantified using pixel differences to track displacement along the centreline of the anterior, middle, and posterior intestine (AI, MI, and PI, respectively), was developed. Our results indicated that clear DM-like traits were observed in the HFD and SGD models, but not the ED model. In the SD controls, the AI showed similar anterograde and retrograde contractions indicating normal GI mixing; the MI exhibited more prominent forward contractions, and the PI showed distinct rectal waves. Compared to the SD, the HFD and SDG models exhibited significantly increased and decreased contraction velocities and could be used as models of diarrhoea and constipation in DM, respectively, while the ED model showed comparatively little change in motility. Together, these data indicate that complex changes in GI motility are associated with diet and therapeutics used to alleviate GI complications in DM should take these into account. Ultimately, the HFD and SDG models can be used to investigate different aspects of GI motility in association to DM. Hence, zebrafish are a useful model for studying GI dysfunctions due to DM and/or DM medication side-effects.

Abstract Braille system is widely used worldwide for communication by visually impaired people. However, there are still some visually impaired people who are unable to learn Braille system due to various factors, such as the age (too young or too old), brain damage, etc. A wearable and low-cost Braille recognition system may substantially help these people recognize Braille or assist them in Braille learning. In this work, we fabricated polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS)-based flexible pressure sensors to construct an electronic skin (E-skin) for the application of Braille recognition. The E-skin mimics human touch sensing function for collecting Braille information. Braille recognition is realized with a neural network based on memristors. We utilize a binary neural network algorithm with only two bias layers and three fully connected layers. Such neural network design remarkably reduces the calculation burden and, thus, the system cost. Experiments show that the system can achieve a recognition accuracy of up to 91.25%. This work demonstrates the possibility of realizing a wearable and low-cost Braille recognition system and a Braille learning-assistance system.

Abstract Undifferentiated uveitis (intraocular inflammation, IOI) is an idiopathic sight-threatening, presumed autoimmune disease, accountable for ~ 10% of all blindness in the developed world. We have investigated the association of uveitis with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) using a mouse model of spontaneous experimental autoimmune uveoretinitis (EAU). Mice expressing the transgene (Tg) hen egg lysozyme (HEL) in the retina crossed with 3A9 mice expressing a transgenic HEL-specific TCR spontaneously develop uveoretinitis at post-partum day (P)20/21. Double transgenic (dTg TCR/HEL) mice also spontaneously develop clinical signs of colitis at ~ P30 with diarrhoea, bowel shortening, oedema and lamina propria (LP) inflammatory cell infiltration. Single (s)Tg TCR (3A9) mice also show increased histological LP cell infiltration but no bowel shortening and diarrhoea. dTg TCR/HEL mice are profoundly lymphopenic at weaning. In addition, dTg TCR/HEL mice contain myeloid cells which express MHC Class II-HEL peptide complexes (MHCII-HEL), not only in the inflamed retina but also in the colon and have the potential for antigen presentation. In this model the lymphopenia and reduction in the absolute Treg numbers in dTg TCR/HEL mice is sufficient to initiate eye disease. We suggest that cell-associated antigen released from the inflamed eye can activate colonic HEL-specific T cells which, in a microbial micro-environment, not only cause colitis but feedback to amplify IOI.

Aiming to solve the problem of loss of important image information, such as blurred details and low contrast, caused by fog, haze and other meteorological influences in the slope monitoring process of UAV remote sensing images, a new method of improving dark channel image dehazing based on channel-weighted analysis and compensation function is proposed by a training of multilayer perceptron (MLP) in this study. First, based on the dark channel prior principle, the original hazy UAV image is mapped to obtain the estimated values of atmospheric light and rough transmittance. Next, by counting the RGB three-channel values of the pixels in the high-brightness regions, and analyzing the scattering of the RGB three-channel values in the haze, a color recovery module of atmospheric light is constructed, and the estimated value of atmospheric light is optimized. Then, according to the global transmittance, the compensation boundary value is determined and a functional relationship between different brightness regions and the increment of transmittance is established as a compensation function to optimize the rough transmittance. Finally, perform secondary optimization on the rough transmittance with the multi-layer perceptron (MLP) to obtain a smoother transmittance value. The experimental results show that the image processed by the proposed method has good contrast. The color saturation and authenticity are effectively maintained. And the detailed information of the mountain recorded by the image is better restored, which can provide a real data basis for slope monitoring.

Epilepsy is a serious neurological condition caused by a sudden abnormality of brain neurons. An accurate epilepsy detection based on electroencephalogram (EEG) signals can provide vital information for diagnosis and treatment. In this study, we propose a lightweight automatic epilepsy detection system with artificial neural network based on our as-fabricated neuromorphic chip. The proposed system utilizes a neural network model to achieve high-accuracy detection without the need for epilepsy-related prior knowledge. The model uses a filter module and a convolutional neural network to preprocess the raw EEG signal and uses a long short-term memory recurrent neural network and a fully connected network as the classifier. In the examination, the classification accuracy of the normal cases and seizures approaches 99.10%, and the accuracy of the normal cases, and interictal and seizure cases can reach 94.46%. This design provides possible epilepsy detection in wearable or portable devices.

Since the first clinical trials conducted after World War II, chemotherapeutic drugs have been extensively used in the clinic as the main cancer treatment either alone or as an adjuvant therapy before and after surgery. Although the use of chemotherapeutic drugs improved the survival of cancer patients, these drugs are notorious for causing many severe side effects that significantly reduce the efficacy of anti-cancer treatment and patients’ quality of life. Many widely used chemotherapy drugs including platinum-based agents, taxanes, vinca alkaloids, proteasome inhibitors, and thalidomide analogs may cause direct and indirect neurotoxicity. In this review we discuss the main effects of chemotherapy on the peripheral and central nervous systems, including neuropathic pain, chemobrain, enteric neuropathy, as well as nausea and emesis. Understanding mechanisms involved in chemotherapy-induced neurotoxicity is crucial for the development of drugs that can protect the nervous system, reduce symptoms experienced by millions of patients, and improve the outcome of the treatment and patients’ quality of life.

At the Earth’s low-latitude magnetopause, the Kelvin-Helmholtz (KH) waves, which are driven by the super-Alfvénic velocity shear across the magnetopause, have been frequently observed during periods of northward interplanetary-magnetic-field (IMF) and believed to contribute to efficiently transporting the solar wind plasmas into the magnetosphere. On the other hand, during southward IMF periods, the signatures of the KH waves are much less frequently observed and how the KH waves contribute to the solar wind transport has not been well explored. Recently, the Magnetospheric Multiscale (MMS) mission successfully detected signatures of the KH waves near the dusk-flank of the magnetopause during southward IMF. In this study, we analyzed a series of two- and three-dimensional fully kinetic simulations modeling this MMS event. The results show that a turbulent evolution of the lower-hybrid drift instability (LHDI) near the low-density (magnetospheric) side of the edge layer of the KH waves rapidly disturbs the structure of the layer and causes an effective transport of plasmas across the layer. The obtained transport rate is comparable to or even larger than that predicted for the northward IMF. These results indicate that the diffusive solar wind transport induced by the KH waves may be active at the flank-to-tail magnetopause during southward IMF.

Purpose: Cancer patients receiving cisplatin therapy often experience side-effects such as nausea and emesis, but current anti-emetic regimens are suboptimal. Thus, to enable the development of efficacious anti-emetic treatments, the mechanisms of cisplatin-induced emesis must be determined. We therefore investigated these mechanisms in Suncus murinus, an insectivore that is capable of vomiting.Methods: We used a microelectrode array system to examine the effect of cisplatin on the spatiotemporal properties of slow waves in stomach antrum, duodenum, ileum and colon tissues isolated from S. murinus. In addition, we used a multi-wire radiotelemetry system to record conscious animals’ gastric myoelectric activity, core body temperature, blood pressure (BP) and heart rate viability over 96-h periods. Furthermore, we used whole-body plethysmography to simultaneously monitor animals’ respiratory activity. At the end of in vivo experiments, the stomach antrum was collected and immunohistochemistry was performed to identify c-Kit and cluster of differentiation 45 (CD45)-positive cells.Results: Our acute in vitro studies revealed that cisplatin (1–10 μM) treatment had acute region-dependent effects on pacemaking activity along the gastrointestinal tract, such that the stomach and colon responded oppositely to the duodenum and ileum. S. murinus treated with cisplatin for 90 min had a significantly lower dominant frequency (DF) in the ileum and a longer waveform period in the ileum and colon. Our 96-h recordings showed that cisplatin inhibited food and water intake and caused weight loss during the early and delayed phases. Moreover, cisplatin decreased the DF, increased the percentage power of bradygastria, and evoked a hypothermic response during the acute and delayed phases. Reductions in BP and respiratory rate were also observed. Finally, we demonstrated that treatment with cisplatin caused inflammation in the antrum of the stomach and reduced the density of the interstitial cells of Cajal (ICC).Conclusion: These studies indicate that cisplatin treatment of S. murinus disrupted ICC networking and viability and also affected general homeostatic mechanisms of the cardiovascular system and gastrointestinal tract. The effect on the gastrointestinal tract appeared to be region-specific. Further investigations are required to comprehensively understand these mechanistic effects of cisplatin and their relationship to emesis.

PSR B1706−44 is an energetic gamma-ray pulsar located inside supernova remnant (SNR) G343.1−2.3 and it powers a compact pulsar wind nebula (PWN) that shows torus and jet structure in X-rays. We present a radio study of the PWN using Australia Telescope Compact Array observations at 3, 6, 13, and 21 cm. We found an overall arc-like morphology at 3 and 6 cm, and the “arc” shows two distinct peaks at 6 cm. The radio emission is faint inside the X-ray PWN and only brightens beyond that. We develop a thick torus model with Doppler boosting effect to explain the radio PWN structure. The model suggests a bulk flow speed of ∼0.2 c , which could indicate significant deceleration of the flow from the X-ray emitting region. Our polarization result reveals a highly ordered toroidal B field in the PWN. Its origin is unclear given that the supernova reverse shock should have interacted with the PWN. At a larger scale, the 13 and 21 cm radio images detected a semicircular rim and an east-west ridge of G343.1−2.3. We argue that the latter could possibly be a pulsar tail rather than a filament of the SNR, as supported by the flat radio spectrum and the alignment between the magnetic field and its elongation.

Abstract Background Post-operative pneumonia (Pop) following meningioma surgery is the dominant systemic complication which could cause serious threats to patients. It is unclear whether hematological biochemical markers are independently associated with the Pop. This study attempted to perform a more comprehensive study of taking both clinical factors and hematological biomarkers into account to promote the management of patients after meningioma surgery. Methods We collected clinical and hematological parameters of 1156 patients undergoing meningioma resection from January 2009 to January 2013. According to whether the symptoms of pneumonia had manifested,patients were divided into the Pop group and the Non-Pop group. We analyzed the distinctions of clinical factors between the two groups. We successively performed univariate and multivariate regression analysis to identify risk factors independently associated with the Pop. Results 4.4% patients infected with the Pop (51 of 1156). The median age at diagnosis of the Pop patients was significantly older than the Non-Pop group (p = 0.002). Metallic glasses deform along nanoscale shear bands, and while it is known that they affect the neighboring glass regions, exactly how is unclear. Here, the authors use magnetic force microscopy to atomically resolve the shear-band affected zone and show its effects extends much further than previously thought.

Producing ultrastable metallic glasses has always been associated with substrates heated close to the glass transition temperature. Here, the authors show that reducing the deposition rate of the metallic glass on a cold substrate produces ultrastable metallic glasses with remarkably improved stability.

Two new microstrip triple-mode resonators loaded with T-shaped open stubs using axially and centrally symmetric spiral structures, respectively, are presented. Spiraled for circuit size reduction, these two half-wavelength resonators can both generate three resonant modes over a wide frequency band by loading two T-stubs with different lengths. Due to the structural symmetry, they can be analyzed by odd- and even-mode method. To validate the design concept, two compact bandpass filters (BPFs) using these two novel resonators with center frequencies of 1.76 GHz and 2.44 GHz for the GSM1800 and WLAN/Zigbee applications, respectively, have been designed, fabricated and tested. The center frequencies and bandwidths can be tunable through the analysis of resonant frequency responses, fractional bandwidths and external quality factor versus the resonator parameters. The final measured results have achieved good consistence with the simulations of these two BPFs.

Vehicular ad hoc networks can be viewed as a typical context-aware system where the experienced context frequently varies as vehicles move along road, e.g., signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), velocity, and traffic flow. In particular, the adopted security protection mechanisms often depend on the node state, location, and/or surrounding risk, which need the capability of context-aware security quantification. This paper views the security level as a user's inherent property that is only correlated with the user's behaviours and the situated context and independent of the suffered attack ways. We propose a formalized methodology to especially quantify the security level in real time from the perspective of state transition probability through estimating the stable probability of staying in the security state in inhomogeneous continuous time Markov chain. This paradigm enables users to customize the security protection mechanisms for adapting to the frequently varying context. We conduct the extensive numerical calculations and empirical analysis to comprehensively investigate the response of the proposed security quantification framework to the various combinations of the concerned parameters, e.g., SNR, velocity, and traffic flow. The results show that the proposed framework is capable of capturing the real-time security level adaptively to the vehicular context and provides a dependable decision basis to security protection, which can restrict the security to a target value.

Barium titanate (BaTiO3) nanoparticles were successfully synthesized by using a surfactant-assisted method. The various processing parameters, namely, th e species of surfactant, reaction temperature and micro-emusion concentration had been varied, and the effects on the micrographs and crystal structure of BaTiO3 particles had been analyzed by scanning electron microscope (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). XRD analyses confirming the tetragonal structure of the BaTiO3 nanoparticles using hexadecyl trimethyl ammonium Bromide (CTAB) or nonylphenol polyoxyethylene ether (NP-10) as surfactant. The SEM analysis showed that by changing the species of surfactant, grains with different dimensions could be synthesized. TEM analyses indicate that BaTiO3 nanoparticles with 15–20 nm in diameter were successfully synthesized.

In this paper cerium oxide (CeO2) nanoparticles with 200-300 nm in diameter were synthesized via a precipitation method using ammonia water and oxalic acid as precipitant, respectively. The as-prepared CeO2 nanoparticles were characterized by means of different techniques including X-ray, scanning electron microscopy and FT-IR. The effect of calcine temperature and precipitant on the crystal size and morphology were discussed. The results showed that the shape of CeO2 nanoparticles prepared is strongly dependent on the precipitant. The average particle size as well as the crystallite size increased with increasing the calcine temperature. The structure of the na noparticles was fluorite-type structure in the samples.

Bacillus cereus C1L was demonstrated to induce systemic resistance in Lilium formosanum against leaf blight caused by Botrytis elliptica. Suppression subtractive hybridization library of L. formosanum triggered by B. cereus C1L were screened and 3 differentially expressed genes were identified. Based on sequence analysis, these genes encoding putative glycine-rich protein, metallothionein-like protein, and PsbR protein of photosystem 2, were designated LfGRP1, LfMT1, and LfPsbR, respectively. The results of Northern blot analysis showed that expressions of LfGRP1, LfMT1 and LfPsbR increased in response to B. elliptica infection. On the other hand, expression of LfMT1 increased but expressions of LfGRP1 and LfPsbR decreased when the rhizosphere of L. formosanum was drenched with suspension of B. cereus C1L with or without subsequent challenge with B. elliptica on lily leaves. Similar expression profiles of homologues of LfGRP1, LfMT1, and LfPsbR (named LsGRP1, LsMT1, and LsPsbR, respectively) were presented in Lilium oriental hybrid Star Gazer. In addition, application of the photosynthetic inhibitor, 3-(3,4-dichlorophenyl)-1,1-dimethylurea, on the leaves reduced disease severity and expressions of LsGRP1 and LsPsbR just as that in response to B. cereus C1L treatment.

While the Cluster spacecraft were located near the high-latitude magnetopause, between 11:30–13:00 UT on 1 April 2004, a series of medium to large scale (40 nT, 0.6–1.2 Re) FTEs were observed. During this pass, simultaneous and conjugated SuperDARN measurements are available that show a global flow pattern which is consistent with the expected (mapped) north-west motion of (predominantly sub-solar) reconnected, magnetic flux at the magnetopause. We focus on analysing the local response of three FTEs, tracking their magnetopause motion via the four-spacecraft measurements together with their corresponding ground mapped motions. For two of these FTEs, where the tracking is strongly coordinated with the ionospheric flow at each footprint of the implied flux tubes in the Northern Hemisphere, conditions corresponded to stable, increasing (>100°) clock angle, while the third event, where the correspondence is less strong, coincided with low (

Ground-based observations can be used to provide substantial support for Cluster/Double Star measurements and greatly enhance the mission's scientific return. There are six Chinese ground stations involved in coordinated cluster/Double Star and ground-based instrument observations. Among them, the Chinese Zhongshan Station in Antarctica and the Yellow River Station on Svalbard are closely magnetic conjugate and are situated under the ionospheric projection of the magnetospheric cusp regions, which, combined with satellite data, provide a perfect configuration to conduct conjugate studies of cusp phenomena. In this paper we present the ground-based instrumentation at these stations, discuss the restriction which is applyed to the optical sites and present an overview of the occurrences for conjunctions of these instruments with the spacecraft. Samples of data products are given to illustrate the potential use of these instrumentations in coordination with Cluster/Double Star measurements.

ZnWO4 nanowires array was prepared on the titanium substrate by a facile hydrothermal synthesis, in which the average length of ZnWO4 nanowires is about 2um and the diameter of individual ZnWO4 nanowire ranges from 50 to 70 nm. The bipolar resistive switching effect of ZnWO4 nanowires array was observed. Moreover, the performance of the resistive switching device is greatly improved under white light irradiation compared with that in the dark.
