Abstract The ratmouth barbel (Ptychidio jordani) is a critically endangered freshwater fish from the Cyprinidae family, primarily due to overfishing and habitat disruption. To address the challenges of its shrinking wild populations and the difficulties in artificial reproduction, we sequenced, assembled, and annotated a high-quality chromosome-level genome of P. jordani using next-generation short-read sequencing, third-generation long-read sequencing, and Hi-C sequencing. The final genome assembly was 1.14 Gb, consisting of 25 chromosomes with a contig N50 of 25.14 Mb and a scaffold N50 of 42.91 Mb. We identified 25,183 protein-coding genes, 751.75 Mb of repeats, and 19,373 ncRNAs. Methylation loci on most chromosomes ranged from 1,000 to 3,000 per 100 kb window. Gene expression levels across various tissues were analyzed, revealing 12,135 (caudal fin), 11,465 (liver), 14,438 (gill), 12,413 (heart), 8,301 (spleen), and 3,578 (kidney) differentially expressed genes compared to muscle. The comprehensive genomic and transcriptomic resources generated here will aid in understanding the ecology, adaptation, and environmental responses of P. jordani, supporting future research and conservation efforts.

Abstract Aim This study aimed to compile data on the effectiveness of music therapy for patients undergoing cardiothoracic surgery. Background After cardiac and thoracic surgery, patients often experience physiological and psychological complications, such as anxiety, pain, stress, depression and changes in vital signs, which have a great impact on prognosis. Methods A systematic search of six databases was performed to identify randomized controlled trials investigating music therapy and cardiothoracic surgery. The data were extracted from the qualified research, the data without heterogeneity were analysed by random-effects model (REM) meta-analysis, and the data with heterogeneity were analysed by fixed-effects model (FEM) meta-analysis. We evaluated anxiety, pain, duration of mechanical ventilation, hospital length of stay, stress hormones, opioid consumption, and vital signs, including heart rate (HR), respiratory rate (RR), oxygen saturation (SpO2), diastolic blood pressure (DBP), and systolic blood pressure (SBP) after cardiothoracic surgery. The meta-analysis and sensitivity analysis were performed with RevMan 5.4 and Stata 14 software, and trial sequential analysis was conducted using TSA 0.9.5.10 Beta software. This study was conducted in accordance with the PRISMA guidelines and was registered with PROSPERO. Results The study included 24 randomized controlled trials with a total of 1576 patients. Abstract Hemibagrus guttatus, also named as spotted longbarbel catfish, is an economical fish in China. However, their gender cannot be easily distinguished from their appearance, which largely impedes their artificial breeding. Therefore, we provided two gap-free chromosome-level genomes of male and female spotted longbarbel catfish by combining wtdbg2, LR_Gapcloser and TGS-GapCloser assembly approaches with Hi-C data and accurate Pacbio HiFi long-reads. We assembled 30 chromosomes without any gap. Their genome sizes are approximately 749.1 Mb and 747.8 Mb of male and female individuals. The completeness results of BUSCO evaluation show about 94.2% and 95.0%, representing a high-level of completeness of both genomes. We also obtained 35,277 and 34,571 protein-coding gene sets from male and female individuals. Both available gap-free chromosome-level genomes of H. guttatus will provide excellent references for resequencing of male and female individuals to identify accurate markers for distinguishing gender of this fish.

Abstract Objective The choice of osteotomy in joint replacement surgery for Crowe type IV developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH) is a challenging and controversial procedure. In this study, we compared the clinical efficacy of a combination of greater trochanter osteotomy and tension wire fixation with that of subtrochanteric osteotomy. Methods We performed 15 primary total hip arthroplasty (THA) procedures between January 2016 and July 2020 on 13 patients with a combination of greater trochanter osteotomy and tension wire fixation (the GTT group) and 12 THA procedures in 11 patients using subtrochanteric osteotomy (the STO group). The mean follow-up was 2.8 years (range 2.2–4.5 years) in the GTT group and 2.6 years (range 2.5–4.3 years) in the STO group. Clinical scores and radiographic results were evaluated during the final follow-up for the 15 hips in the GTT group and 12 hips in the STO group. Results Postoperative Harris hip scores, implant position, and the surgery time did not differ between the treatment groups. There were no differences in preoperative leg length discrepancy LLD (P = 0.46) and postoperative LLD (P = 0.56) between the two groups. Bone union occurred within 6 months after surgery in 12 hips in the GTT group (92.3%) and in 9 hips (81.8%) in the STO group. One case in the GTT group and two cases in the STO group had nonunion, and additionally, there was one case of postoperative nerve injury in the STO group, while no symptoms of nerve damage were observed in the GTT group. Conclusion The GTT method demonstrated many advantages and reliable clinical results for Crowe type IV DDH patients undergoing THA. This is a surgical method that warrants further development and promotion clinically.

AbstractDiscogobio brachyphysallidos Huang 1989 is a Cyprinidae fish species that is endemic to the upper Pearl River. In the present study, the complete mitochondrial genome of D. brachyphysallidos collected from the Nanpanjiang River was sequenced and annotated. The mitochondrial genome encompassed 13 protein-coding genes, two ribosomal RNA (rRNA) genes, 22 transfer RNA (tRNA) genes, and the control region (D-loop). The total length of the mitochondrial genome was determined to be 16,594 base pairs (bp), with a GC content of 41.7%. Phylogenetic analyses revealed that D. brachyphysallidos may be a sister to D. longibarbatus and D. macrophysallidos. These findings provide insight into the genetic information and phylogenetic relationships of D. brachyphysallidos.

Abstract Objective To investigate the impact of patent foramen ovale (PFO) on the short-term outcomes of living donor liver transplantation (LDLT) in children with biliary atresia. Methods With the approval of the hospital ethics committee, 304 children with biliary atresia who underwent LDLT in our center from January 2020 to December 2021 were enrolled. According to the results of echocardiography before the operation, the subjects were divided into the PFO group (n = 73) and the NoPFO group (n = 231). The baseline characteristics; intraoperative recipient-related data and donor-related data; incidence of postreperfusion syndrome (PRS); postoperative mechanical ventilation time; ICU stay duration; postoperative hospital stay duration; liver function index; incidences of postoperative complications including acute renal injury (AKI), graft dysfunction, hepatic artery thrombosis (HAT) and portal vein thrombosis (PVT); and one-year survival rate were compared between the two groups. The culture of mandarin fish using artificial feed has been gaining increasing attention in China. Ensuring good water quality in the ponds is crucial for successful aquaculture. Recently, the trial of pond-based rice floating beds (PRFBs) in aquaculture ponds has shown promising results. This research assessed the impact of PRFBs on the microbial community structure and overall quality of the aquaculture pond, thereby enhancing our understanding of its functions. The results revealed that the PRFB group exhibited lower levels of NH4+-N, NO2−-N, NO3−-N, TN, TP, and Alk in pond water compared to the control group. The microbial diversity indices in the PRFB group showed a declining trend, while these indices were increasing in the control group. At the phylum level, there was a considerable increase in Proteobacteria abundance in the PRFB group throughout the culture period, suggesting that PRFBs may promote the proliferation of Proteobacteria. In the PRFB group, there was a remarkable decrease in bacterial populations related to carbon, nitrogen, and phosphorus metabolism, including genera Rhodobacter, Rhizorhapis, Dinghuibacter, Candidatus Aquiluna, and Chryseomicrobium as well as the CL500_29_marine_group. Overall, the research findings will provide a basis for the application of aquaculture of mandarin fish fed an artificial diet and rice floating beds.

Background Living donor liver transplantation (LT) is the main treatment for paediatric biliary atresia (BA) in Asia. During LT, a series of haemodynamic changes often occur during LT reperfusion, which is called postreperfusion syndrome (PRS), and PRS is related to a prolonged postoperative hospital stay, delayed recovery of graft function and increased mortality. To reduce adverse reactions after paediatric living donor LT (LDLT), our study’s objectives were to ascertain the incidence of PRS and analyse possible risk factors for PRS.Methods With the approval of the Ethics Committee of our hospital, the clinical data of 304 paediatric patients who underwent LDLT from January 2020 to December 2021 were analysed retrospectively. According to the presence or absence of PRS, the paediatric patients were divided into the non-PRS group and the PRS group. Independent risk factors of PRS were analysed using logistic regression analysis.Results PRS occurred in 132 recipients (43.4%). The peak values of AST (816 (507–1625) vs 678 (449–1107), p=0.016) and ALT (675 (415–1402) vs 545 (389–885), p=0.015) during the first 5 days after LDLT in paediatric patients with PRS were significantly higher than those in the non-PRS group. Meanwhile, the paediatric patients in the PRS group had longer intensive care unit stays and hospital stays, as well as lower 1-year survival rates. Abstract Background Superior mesenteric artery embolism (SMAE) is a rare cause of acute abdomen, and the fatality rate is extremely high if it is not diagnosed and treated in time. Due to the lack of knowledge and experience of nonspecialist physicians, it is easy to misdiagnose. Radiofrequency ablation (RFA) has become the first-line treatment strategy for atrial fibrillation (AF). Thromboembolic events are some of the major complications after RFA, whereas SMAE is rarely reported. Case presentation A 70 year-old woman with paroxysmal AF who regularly took anticoagulant drugs for 3 months experienced abdominal pain after RFA. At the outset, she was misdiagnosed as mechanical intestinal obstruction. When the patient presented with blood in the stool, abdominal enhancement computed tomography was conducted and showed a small bowel perforation. Immediate laparotomy was performed, and the final diagnosis was SMAE. Conclusion It is suggested that for unexplained abdominal pain after RFA of AF, the possibility of SMAE should be considered, and a targeted examination should be carried out in time to confirm the diagnosis and give appropriate treatment.

Fish pond rice planting is an agricultural production activity that uses aquaculture ponds to grow rice. The development of fish pond rice planting technology can keep the aquaculture area, expand the rice planting area, improve food security, and reduce pollution from aquaculture tail water. In the early season of 2022, we conducted a fish pond rice planting experiment in Guangzhou and achieved initial success. The tested rice varieties were Yuetai Youzhan, Huangguang Youzhan, Meixiangzhan No. 2, Taifengyou 208, Guanghong No. 3, Yuexiang 430, Yuenong Simiao, Wushan Simiao, and Nanjing Xiangzhan. The aquaculture varieties were largemouth black bass, Australian freshwater lobster, crucian carp and yellow catfish. The results showed that there was significant difference in grain yield among tested rice varieties under fish pond cultivation and the difference was much greater than that under field cultivation. The yield of Yuexiang 430 was the highest, reaching 390.8 kg/667m2, which was 148.6% higher than that of Taifengyou 208. The four aquaculture varieties all performed well, with high survival rate and fast growth speed, among which the Australian freshwater lobster performed the best. At present, there are still some critical problems such as high cost, lack of technical standards and lagging behind in basic research in fish pond rice planting. Coordinated efforts should be made to enhance low-cost floating bed development, improve rice and fishery matching, screen out more rice varieties, optimize fertilizer management and pest control, manufacture or adapt supporting machinery and equipment, and strengthen relevant theoretical researches. Finally, the green, high-yield and high-efficiency fish pond rice planting procedures and standards should be established through technical integration. With the deepening of research and the maturing of technologies, the fish pond rice planting technology will make increasing contributions to food security, farmers' income increase, environmental protection and beautiful countryside construction in China, especially in the southern regions.

IntroductionMastacembelus armatus is a commercially valuable fish, normally distributed in southern China and Southeast Asia. The natural population size of M. armatus is shrinking in recent years because of overfishing and habitat loss. In order to clarify the genetic diversity and differentiation of M. armatus populations, we collected 114 samples from eight populations in southern China and Vietnam and analyzed their population structure using nuclear ribosomal DNA sequences, the concatenated 18S and ITS2 regions.MethodsGenomic DNA from the fin clip was extracted and sequenced on an Illumina novaseq 6000 (Illumina, USA) high-throughput sequencing platform in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions. After assembly and annotation, haplotype diversity, TCS network analysis, AMOVA analysis, population pairwise genetic distances, and UPGMA tree construction were conducted based on the concatenated sequences of 18S and ITS2.Results and discussionIn total, eleven nrDNA haplotypes were detected based on the concatenated sequences of 18S and ITS2. Amongst, three haplotypes were the main haplotypes, as representatives of three corresponding Clusters. There were two major Clusters in China, however, the Cluster in Vietnam was significantly divergent from the other two in China, likely due to the lack of river connection between China and Vietnam. Interestingly, based on low FST value, we found that gene flow occurred between the isolated island, Hainan Province, and the mainland China of Guangxi Province, probably as a result of exposed continental shelf connected them during glacial periods. In general, combing our data and literature data, genetic diversity and differentiation of M. armatus populations are relatively high regardless of spatial scale, although their natural population size is declining. This suggests that it is not too late to adopt measures to protect M. armatus, which benefits not only species itself but also the whole ecosystem.

Background: It has rarely been reported about the changes of hemoglobin (Hb) and hematocrit (Hct) in elderly patients receiving total knee arthroplasty (TKA) or total hip arthroplasty (THA). This study aimed to evaluate the changes of Hb and Hct after TKA or THA in elderly patients, and analyze its relationship with sex and type of arthroplasty. Methods: This is a prospective cohort study, including 107 patients receiving TKA or THA without allogeneic blood transfusion. There were 54 males and 53 females, with a mean age of 69.42 years. Levels of Hb and Hct were examined preoperatively and during the 6 months follow-up after operation. Results: Levels of Hb and Hct decreased postoperatively and reached their minimum points on postoperative day 4. Thereafter, Hb and Hct recovered to their preoperative levels within 6-12 weeks. No significant differences in the levels of Hb and Hct were noticed between different sexes. THA patients showed significantly greater drop in Hb and Hct than TKA patients in the first 4 days postoperatively (P < 0.05). Conclusions: Levels of Hb and Hct decreased during the first 4 days after arthroplasty and gradually returned to their normal levels within 6-12 weeks postoperatively. THA may be associated with higher postoperative blood loss than TKA.
