Abstract To enhance the efficiency of catalysis, it is crucial to comprehend the behavior of individual nanowires/nanosheets. A developed on-chip microcell facilitates this study by creating a reaction window that exposes the catalyst region of interest. However, this technology’s potential application is limited due to frequently-observed variations in data between different cells. In this study, we identify a conductance problem in the reaction windows of non-metallic catalysts as the cause of this issue. We investigate this problem using in-situ electronic/electrochemical measurements and atom-thin nanosheets as model catalysts. Our findings show that a full-open window, which exposes the entire catalyst channel, allows for efficient modulation of conductance, which is ten times higher than a half-open window. This often-overlooked factor has the potential to significantly improve the conductivity of non-metallic catalysts during the reaction process. After examining tens of cells, we develop a vertical microcell strategy to eliminate the conductance issue and enhance measurement reproducibility. Our study offers guidelines for conducting reliable microcell measurements on non-metallic single nanowire/nanosheet catalysts.

The urgent demand for terawatt-scale clean energy necessitates the rational design of noble metal catalysts with minimal noble metal loading while maintaining high catalytic activity. However, the durability of low-loading catalysts is a critical concern for their successful industrial implementation. Here, we present a capping strategy using an amorphous HfO2 (m-HfO2) to address this issue. Take Pt/C catalysts with Pt loading as low as 81.39 ng cm−2 as an example, we demonstrate that the m-HfO2 layer (10 nm) serves as an efficient mass transport channel for underneath Pt active sites, and effectively mitigates bubble-induced blockage of active sites by separating bubble formation sites with Pt active sites. Thus, the resulting catalyst exhibits a remarkable mass activity of 122.87 A mg−1 and an overpotential of 11 mV at 10 mA cm−2. Furthermore, the m-HfO2 plays a crucial role in eliminating the structural transformation and extending the lifetime of Pt-based catalysts, as evidenced by no loss of specific activity after consecutively cycling the catalyst for over 100 h. Such a capping strategy is potentially applied to other types of reactions and catalyst systems.

To improve the utilization efficiency of noble metals as well as lower their mass loading in electrocatalysis, the research community has contributed significant efforts to nanostructure noble metal catalysts in various dimensions during recent decades, such as porous structures (3D), nanosheets (2D), nanowires (1D), nanoclusters (0D), and individual atoms (i.e., single-atom catalyst). Recently, with the development of the well-controlled synthesis of atom-thin materials (e.g., the noble metal layer or two-dimensional materials), a new type of catalyst defined as the single-atom-layer catalyst, has emerged, allowing nearly all the atoms at the monolayer to be accessible to catalytic reactions. In this perspective, we first introduced the unique properties of this catalyst and distinguished it from current single-atom catalysts, then highlighted its recent theoretical and experimental progress, and finally discussed critical challenges toward catalytic applications.

Lithium–sulfur batteries (LSBs) are one of the main candidates for the next generation of energy storage systems. To improve the performance of LSBs, we herein propose the use of strained MoS2 (s-MoS2) as a catalytically active sulfur host. The introduction of strain in the MoS2 surface, which alters its atomic positions and expands the S–Mo–S angle, shifts the d-band center closer to the Fermi level and provides the surface with abundant and highly active catalytic sites; these enhance the catalyst's ability to adsorb lithium polysulfides (LiPS), accelerating its catalytic conversion and promoting lithium-ion transferability. Strain is generated through the synthesis of core–shell nanoparticles, using different metal sulfides as strain-inducing cores. s-MoS2 nanoparticles are supported on carbon nanofibers (CNF/s-MoS2), and the resulting electrodes are characterized by capacities of 1290 and 657 ​mAh g−1 ​at 0.2 and 5 ​C, respectively, with a 0.05% capacity decay rate per cycle at 8 ​C during 700 cycles. Overall, this work not only provides an ingenious and effective strategy to regulate LiPS adsorption and conversion through strain engineering, but also indicates a path toward the application of strain engineering in other energy storage and conversion fields.
