Objective This study evaluates the collaborative effect of exogenous enzyme blend and dietary nutrient density on the performance of broiler chicken. Methods A total of 600 Ross 308 broiler chickens with same average initial body weight were randomly assigned to 5 treatments. Each treatment contained 8 replicates, and 15 birds per replicate. The diets included a control (CON) starter/finisher (S/F) diet with metabolizable energy (ME) 3,100/3,200 in Kcal/kg and crude protein (CP) content 22.0.0/20.00 in % as (S/F 3,100/3,200 Kcal/kg + CP [22.00/20.00]%), S/F with ME 3,060/3,150 Kcal/kg + CP (21.50/19.50)% with and without the exogenous enzyme blend as (S/F 3,060/3,150 Kcal/kg + [21.50/19.50]% with, and without the exogenous enzyme blend), and lastly, S/F with ME 3,010/3,100 Kcal/kg + CP (21.50/19.50)% with, and without the exogenous enzyme blend as (S/F 3,010/3,100 Kcal/kg + [21.50/19.50]% with, and without the exogenous enzyme blend). Abstract Background The gut microbiota can facilitate host growth under nutrient-constrained conditions. However, whether this effect is limited to certain bacterial species remains largely unclear, and the relevant underlying mechanisms remain to be thoroughly investigated. Results We found that the microbiota was required for Bactrocera dorsalis larval growth under poor dietary conditions. Monoassociation experiments revealed that Enterobacteriaceae and some Lactobacilli promoted larval growth. Among the 27 bacterial strains tested, 14 significantly promoted larval development, and the Enterobacteriaceae cloacae isolate exhibited the most obvious promoting effect. A bacterial genome-wide association study (GWAS) revealed that the vitamin B6 synthesis pathway was critical for the promotion of E. cloacae growth. Deletion of pdxA, which is responsible for vitamin B6 biosynthesis, deprived the mutant strains of larval growth-promoting function, indicating that the 4-hydroxythreonine-4-phosphate dehydrogenase(pdxA) gene was crucial for promoting larval growth in E. cloacae. Importantly, supplementation of a poor diet with vitamin B6 successfully rescued the axenic larval growth phenotype of B. dorsalis. Conclusion Our results suggest that gut microbes promote insect larval growth by providing vitamin B6 under nutrient scarcity conditions in B. dorsalis. Video Abstract

ABSTRACT Providing nutrients in optimum quantities is essential for increasing the productivity of timber species. Despite this, we know little about the actual potassium (K) requirements of native Amazonian Forest species. This study aimed to determine the critical level of K deficiency and toxicity for the initial cultivation of cedar. We grew Cedrela fissilis seedlings in a nutrient solution under the effect of five concentrations of K (0, 1, 2, 5, and 8 mmol L-1) in a completely randomized design with five replications. After 30 days, we evaluated the relative growth rate, dry mass production, proline content, symptomatology, macro and micronutrient content and accumulation, and K absorption and utilization efficiencies. Concentrations of K positively influence the growth, accumulation, and content of nutrients in the dry mass of the aerial part of young cedar plants. Providing varying amounts of potassium significantly affects the nutritional and growth parameters of Cedrela fissilis seedlings. Potassium doses of 3.5 - 4.00 mmol L-1 in the growing substrate led to better nutritional status (26.08 - 27.28 g kg-1 of K) and plant growth.

This study evaluated the nutrient content in Vigna mungo leaves using a visible near-infrared spectroradiometer (VNIR 650–900 nm) and compared it with traditional chemical analysis. Nutrient deficiencies were induced in a controlled environment, focusing on Nitrogen (N), Phosphorus (P), and Potassium (K). The VNIR spectroradiometer measured the spectral reflectance of the leaves at different intervals. Peak reflectance for N, P, and K deficiencies occurred at 716 nm, 737 nm, and 720 nm, respectively. A 30 % deficiency in N, P, and K resulted in reflectance values of 45 %, 42 %, and 41 %, respectively, while a 40 % deficiency increased these values to 48 %, 46 %, and 43 %. Results showed a strong correlation between nutrient deficiency and spectral reflectance, providing a quicker, more economical method than traditional chemical analysis. The study concludes that VNIR spectroradiometry is an effective tool for non-destructive, real-time assessment of nutrient status in Vigna mungo, which could lead to optimized fertilizer application and improved crop management.

Accumulation of K+ in shoots is largely dependent on K+ transport via the xylem and has important implications not only for K+ nutrition but also for stress tolerance. In tomato plants, the K+ channel SlSKOR contributed to K+ translocation but the decrease in the shoot K+ content in slskor mutants was only ∼15 %, indicating that additional K+ transport systems operated in the tomato stele. Here, we studied the physiological roles of the transporter SlNRT1.5 in tomato plants, whose homolog in Arabidopsis, AtNRT1.5, contributed to xylem K+ load. By using heterologous expression of SlNRT1.5 in Xenopus oocytes and a slnrt1.5 knock-out mutant, we have gained insights into its role in shoot K+ nutrition. Expression of SlNRT1.5 in Xenopus oocytes resulted in K+ efflux, similar to that mediated by AtNRT1.5, which could indicate that SlNRT1.5 operates as a K+ transport system. Plants lacking slnrt1.5 accumulated less K+ in shoots than WT plants under low external pH (4.5), and low supply of K+ (0.05 mM) and N (0.5 mM). Interestingly, slnrt1.5 plants accumulated less Na+ and Cl- in shoots than WT plants. Further analyses on slskor slnrt1.5 double mutant plants revealed an overlapping role of SlSKOR and SlNRT1.5 in shoot K+ accumulation. Double mutants showed a 40 % decrease in shoot K+ content in comparison with slskor and slnrt1.5 single mutants. Altogether, this study showed that SlNRT1.5 and SlSKOR are major players in shoot K+ accumulation in tomato plants.

Abstract It is essential to find environment-friendly agrochemicals to cope with the problems of nutrient imbalance, fruit quality decline, and physiological disorders during apple fruit production, which is beneficial for improving the quality and yield of apple. A natural extract from Paecilomyces variotii (ZNC), an endophytic fungus, has been used widely to enhance crop performance. However, an understanding of the mechanism underlying ZNC-triggered growth and alleviation of nutrient deficiency-associated symptoms in apples remains elusive. Here, the photosynthesis, leaf growth, and fruit quality were enhanced by adding ZNC. In addition, ZNC relieved nutrient deficiency-related symptoms promoted the differentiation of root morphology and vitality, and reduced the accumulation of osmoprotectants and reactive oxygen species, thereby promoting growth under normal and nutrient-deficient conditions. Finally, genome-wide RNA sequencing reveals the ZNC-regulated mechanisms involved in hormone and metal ion pathways. Our study reveals the role of ZNC in promoting growth and improving the quality of apple, providing a new direction for reducing the use of chemical fertilizers and pesticides.

Abstract Background Phosphorus (P) and iron (Fe) deficiencies are relevant plants nutritional disorders, prompting responses such as increased root exudation to aid nutrient uptake, albeit at an energy cost. Reacquiring and reusing exudates could represent an efficient energy and nitrogen saving strategy. Hence, we investigated the impact of plant development, Fe and P deficiencies on this process. Tomato seedlings were grown hydroponically for 3 weeks in Control, -Fe, and -P conditions and sampled twice a week. We used Isotope Ratio Mass-Spectrometry to measure δ13C in roots and shoots after a 2-h exposure to 13C-labeled glycine (0, 50, or 500 μmol L−1). Plant physiology was assessed with an InfraRed Gas Analyzer and ionome with an Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass-Spectrometry. Results Glycine uptake varied with concentration, suggesting an involvement of root transporters with different substrate affinities. The uptake decreased over time, with -Fe and -P showing significantly higher values as compared to the Control. This highlights its importance during germination and in nutrient-deficient plants. Translocation to shoots declined over time in -P and Control but increased in -Fe plants, suggesting a role of Gly in the Fe xylem transport. Conclusions Root exudates, i.e. glycine, acquisition and their subsequent shoot translocation depend on Fe and P deficiency. The present findings highlight the importance of this adaptation to nutrient deficiencies, that can potentially enhance plants fitness. A thorough comprehension of this trait holds potential significance for selecting cultivars that can better withstand abiotic stresses.

Abstract Background Previous researches examining the impact of dietary nutrition on mortality risk have mainly focused on individual nutrients, however the interaction of these nutrients has not been considered. The purpose of this study was to identify of nutrient deficiencies patterns and analyze their potential impact on mortality risk in older adults with hypertension. Methods We included participants from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) study. The latent class analysis (LCA) was applied to uncover specific malnutrition profiles within the sample. Risk of the end points across the phenogroups was compared using Kaplan–Meier analysis and Cox proportional hazard regression model. Multinomial logistic regression was used to determine the influencing factors of specific malnutrition profiles. Results A total of 6924 participants aged 60 years or older with hypertension from NHANES 2003–2014 was followed until December 31, 2019 with a median follow-up of 8.7 years. Various nutrients included vitamin A, vitamin B1, vitamin B12, vitamin C, vitamin D, vitamin E, vitamin K, fiber, folate, calcium, magnesium, zinc, copper, iron, and selenium, and LCA revealed 4 classes of malnutrition. Regarding all-cause mortality, “Nutrient Deprived” group showed the strongest hazard ratio (1.42 from 1.19 to 1.70) compared with “Adequate Nutrient” group, followed by “Inadequate Nutrient” group (1.29 from 1.10 to 1.50), and “Low Fiber, Magnesium, and Vit E” group (1.17 from 1.02 to 1.35). For cardiovascular mortality, “Nutrient Deprived” group showed the strongest hazard ratio (1.61 from 1.19 to 2.16) compared with “Adequate Nutrient” group, followed by “Low Fiber, Magnesium, and Vit E” group (1.51 from 1.04 to 2.20), and “Inadequate Nutrient” group (1.37 from 1.03 to 1.83). Conclusions The study revealed a significant association between nutrients deficiency patterns and the risk of all-cause and cardiovascular mortality in older adults with hypertension. The findings suggested that nutrients deficiency pattern may be an important risk factor for mortality in older adults with hypertension.

Purpose: Nutritional deficiencies in developed countries are a rare but potentially intervenable cause of optic neuropathy in pediatric populations. To date, much of the literature on nutritional optic neuropathy has focused on children with developmental delay, however, a growing body of evidence supports other underreported risk factors. Observations: We describe three pediatric patients with normal neurodevelopment, who presented with decreased vision and were subsequently found to have optic neuropathy attributed to vitamin deficiencies, predominantly vitamin B12. We review previous literature on nutritional optic neuropathy in pediatric patients, revealing that most published cases were associated with autism (17/25, 68 %). Conclusions and importance: An increasing number of cases, including our own, describe patients without autism who develop nutritional optic neuropathy due to restricted diets related to traumatic food-related events, multiple food allergies, or from an unknown cause. Altogether, our findings highlight the importance of a thorough diet and allergy review in pediatric patients with optic atrophy.

BackgroundMigraine is one of the most debilitating neurological disorders that causes frequent attacks of headaches and affects approximately 11% of the global population. Deficient or even insufficient levels of vital nutrients would increase the severity and frequency of migraine attacks. Therefore, we aimed to examine the practical supplements for the prevention and management of migraine attacks.MethodThis narrative review study was conducted by searching PubMed, ISI web of science, EMBASE, Google Scholar, and Scopus using the keywords of “dietary supplement” and “migraine” plus their MeSH terms. Original articles published in English language from their inception to July 27th, 2024, studies that investigated adult population (aged >18 years), and those assessing the impact of intended nutrient supplementation on clinical symptoms of migraine were included in the study.ResultOxidative stress and low intake of antioxidants would be risk factors for migraine attacks by inducing inflammation. The secretion of inflammatory cytokines, such as tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-a, would lead to neuroinflammation and migraine episodes by increasing the cellular permeability and interactions. Evidence also indicated a direct association between phases of migraine attacks and calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP), mitochondrial disorders, monoaminergic pathway, disruption in brain energy metabolism, and higher serum levels of glutamate and homocysteine. Therefore, supplementation with nutrients involved in mitochondrial function, brain energy metabolism, and even methyl donors would relieve migraine attacks.ConclusionEvidence indicated that supplementation with riboflavin, omega-3 fatty acids, alpha lipoic acid, magnesium, probiotics, coenzyme Q10, ginger, and caffeine would have favorable effects on migraine patients. However, more prospective studies are required to evaluate the effect of other nutrients on migraine patients.

Leafy vegetables are widely consumed around the world for their rich nutritional qualities. To ensure a reliable and cost-effective supply of leafy vegetables in the future, advancements in their production are essential. Deficiencies of nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), and potassium (K) impair growth of leafy vegetables and the ensuing visual symptoms make the plants unmarketable. We studied the use of non-contact large area hyperspectral imaging (HSI) for early detection of N, P and K deficiencies in the leafy vegetable, Choy Sum, before the appearance of visual symptoms. The wide spectral data of 500–900 nm extracted from the plants were subjected to advanced feature mining, facilitating the creation of novel spectral indices tailored to each vital nutrient by leveraging the Pearson’s correlations of 0.85 for N, 0.64 for P, and 0.68 for K with gold standard elemental concentration data. Early detection of deficiencies and timely replenishment of macronutrient(s) can prevent the development of obvious symptoms and thus maintain the visual quality of Choy Sum. These newly created spectral indices hold the potential to provide non-destructive estimation of nutrient content in plants, offering a promising avenue for future advancements in precision agriculture and resource-efficient crop management.

Background: Patients with gastric cancer (GC) are at high risk of nutrient deficiencies (ND) that can negatively affect the postoperative period and long-term treatment outcomes.Objective: To assess the nutritional status (NS) and skeletal muscle condition in patients with resectable stage I-III GC.Materials and methods: Our study included 102 GC patients: 64 men (62.7%) and 38 women (37.3%) aged 31 to 77 years. During the assessment we used the NRS-2002 system, determined laboratory markers of the NS, calculated the Nutritional Risk Index (NRI), and evaluated the condition of adipose tissue and skeletal muscles using computed tomography.Results: We found that 70.6% of the patients had ND: NRS-2002 score < 3 points (52%) and NRS-2002 score ≥ 3 points (18.6%). Risk factors for ND were tumor localization in the cardia and stage III GC. Laboratory markers of ND were transferrin and NRI. Among the examined patients (n = 80) sarcopenia was detected in 10 (12.5%) patients: 1 patient (1/25; 4.0%) from the group without ND, 6 patients (6/42; 14.3%) from the group with NRS-2002 score < 3 points, and 3 patients (3/13; 23.1%) from the group with NRS2002 score ≥ 3 points, (P = .212). In multivariate logistic regression analysis, independent factors associated with sarcopenia were age, body mass index, and total protein.Conclusions: All GC patients selected for radical surgery should undergo nutritional assessment using special tools (NRS-2002, NRI) and evaluation of the skeletal muscle condition. Sarcopenia may occur in patients with no clinical or laboratory evidence of ND. In GC patients at nutritional risk, preand postoperative nutritional support should be considered to reduce the ND-related risks.

White lupin (Lupinus albus) has become a model plant for understanding plant adaptations to phosphorus (P) and iron (Fe) deficiency, two major limiting factors for plant productivity. In response to both nutrient deficiencies, white lupin forms cluster roots, bottle-brush-like root structures that aid in P and Fe acquisition from soil. While the cluster root function is well-studied, not much is known about the signaling pathways involved in sensing and responding to a P and Fe deficiency. Sucrose has been identified as a long-distance signal sent in increased concentrations from shoot to root in response to both a P and Fe deficiency. Thus, sucrose plays a dual role both as a signal and as a major source of energy for the root. To unravel the responses to sucrose as a signal, we performed an Illumina paired-end cDNA sequencing of white lupin roots treated with sucrose for 20, 40 or 80 min, compared to untreated controls (0 min). We identified 634 up-regulated and 956 down-regulated genes in response to sucrose. Twenty minutes of sucrose treatment showed the most responses, with the ethylene-activated signaling pathway as the most enriched Gene Ontology (GO) category. The number of up-regulated genes decreased at 40 min and 80 min, and protein dephosphorylation became the most enriched category. Taken together, our findings indicate active responses to sucrose as a signal at 20 min after a sucrose addition, but fewer responses and a potential resetting of signal transduction pathways by the dephosphorylation of proteins at 40 and 80 min.

Pecan is an important nut crop in the United States. It is native to North America and dominantly produced in the southern states in the US. Nitrogen and zinc are two of the most critical nutrients for pecan production. This review provides a comprehensive overview of nitrogen and zinc fertilizer management in pecan orchards, covering key topics such as nitrogen sources, nitrogen application rates, the timing of nitrogen application, nitrogen application of damaged trees, the impact of zinc deficiency, and methods for zinc application. The deficiency of these nutrients causes severe loss in pecan production. However, the cost involving nutrient application and post the effect of excessive application on the soil and environment is of serious discussion. This review summarizes nitrogen and zinc management strategy and explores application methods that can reduce the cost of fertilizer with minimal adverse effect on the soil and environment. Also, this review sheds light on the areas that needs extensive research in nutrient management in pecan production.

Roots play essential roles in the acquisition of water and minerals from soils in higher plants. However, water or nutrient limitation can alter plant root morphology. To clarify the spatial distribution characteristics of essential nutrients in citrus roots and the influence mechanism of micronutrient deficiency on citrus root morphology and architecture, especially the effects on lateral root (LR) growth and development, two commonly used citrus rootstocks, trifoliate orange (Poncirus trifoliata L. Raf., Ptr) and red tangerine (Citrus reticulata Blanco, Cre), were employed here. The analysis of the mineral nutrient distribution characteristics in different root parts showed that, except for the P concentrations in Ptr, the last two LR levels (second and third LRs) had the highest macronutrient concentrations. All micronutrient concentrations in the second and third LRs of Ptr were higher than those of Cre, except for the Zn concentration in the second LR, which indicates that Ptr requires more micronutrients to maintain normal root system growth and development. Principal component analysis (PCA) showed that B and P were very close in terms of spatial distribution and that Mo, Mn, Cu, and Fe contributed significantly to PC1, while B, Cu, Mo, and Zn contributed significantly to PC2 in both rootstocks. These results suggest that micronutrients are major factors in citrus root growth and development. The analysis of root morphology under micronutrient deficiency showed that root growth was more significantly inhibited in Ptr and Cre under Fe deficiency (FeD) than under other micronutrient deficiencies, while Cre roots exhibited better performance than Ptr roots. From the perspective of micronutrient deficiency, FeD and B deficiency (BD) inhibited all root morphological traits in Ptr and Cre except the average root diameter, while Mn deficiency (MnD) and Zn deficiency (ZnD) had lesser impacts, as well as the morphology of the stem. The mineral nutrient concentrations in Ptr and Cre seedlings under micronutrient deficiency revealed that single micronutrient deficiencies affected both their own concentrations and the concentrations of other mineral nutrients, whether in the roots or in stems and leaves. Dynamic analysis of LR development revealed that there were no significant decreases in either the first or second LR number in Ptr seedlings under BD and ZnD stress. Moreover, the growth rates of first and second LRs in Ptr and Cre did not significantly decrease compared with the control under short-term (10 days) BD stress. Altogether, these results indicate that micronutrients play essential roles in citrus root growth and development. Moreover, citrus alters its root morphology and biological traits as a nutrient acquisition strategy to maintain maximal micronutrient acquisition and growth. The present work on the spatial distribution characteristics and micronutrient deficiency of citrus roots provides a theoretical basis for effective micronutrient fertilization and the diagnosis of micronutrient deficiency in citrus.

Background: Cellular vacuolization is a commonly observed phenomenon under physiological and pathological conditions. However, the mechanisms underlying vacuole formation remain largely unresolved. Methods: LysoTracker Deep Red probes and Enhanced Green Fluorescent Protein-tagged light chain 3B (LC3B) plasmids were employed to differentiate the types of massive vacuoles. By confocal microscopy, lysosome-like massive vacuoles (LysoTracker Deep Red+), autophagosome-like massive vacuoles (LC3B-enhanced green fluorescent protein (EGFP+)), and autolysosome-like massive vacuoles (LC3B-EGFP+ LysoTracker Deep Red+) in starved HEK293T cells were observed. Results: In this study, we demonstrated that nutrient deficiency can induce the formation of massive vacuoles that appear highly electron-lucent in HEK293T cells. Additionally, these massive vacuoles, resulting from nutrient depletion, can originate from various organelles, including small vacuoles, autophagosomes, lysosomes, and autolysosomes. We found that massive vacuoles could form through two primary mechanisms: the accumulation of small vacuoles into larger vacuoles or the fusion of homogeneous or heterogeneous vacuoles. Further analysis revealed that the membranes of massive vacuoles, regardless of origin, were composed of a bilayer membrane structure. As the volume of the massive vacuoles increased, the cytoplasm and nucleus were displaced toward the periphery of the cells, leading to the formation of signet ring-like cells. Interestingly, we provided evidence that complete massive vacuoles or autophagosome-like massive vacuoles can be released and exist independently outside HEK293T cells. Conclusions: Nutrient deprivation induces the formation of heterogeneous, massive vacuoles in human embryonic kidney cells, some of which contribute to the development of signet ring cells, while others lead to extracellular vacuole formation.

Parasitic plants and their hosts communicate through haustorial connections. Nutrient deficiency is a common stress for plants, yet little is known about whether and how host plants and parasites communicate during adaptation to such nutrient stresses. In this study, we used transcriptomics and proteomics to analyze how soybean (Glycine max) and its parasitizing dodder (Cuscuta australis) respond to nitrate and phosphate deficiency (-N and -P). After -N and -P treatment, the soybean and dodder plants exhibited substantial changes of transcriptome and proteome, although soybean plants showed very few transcriptional responses to -P and dodder did not show any transcriptional changes to either -N or -P. Importantly, large-scale interplant transport of mRNAs and proteins was detected. Although the mobile mRNAs only comprised at most 0.2% of the transcriptomes, the foreign mobile proteins could reach 6.8% of the total proteins, suggesting that proteins may be the major forms of interplant communications. Furthermore, the interplant mobility of macromolecules was specifically affected by the nutrient regimes and the transport of these macromolecules was very likely independently regulated. This study provides new insight into the communication between host plants and parasites under stress conditions.

Efforts to increase grape yields have focused on using nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium fertilizers, often causing unintended magnesium (Mg) deficiencies. To overcome Mg deficiency, different concentrations of MgSO4·7H2O (0, 1, 2, 3, 4 mM) and GABA (2.5 mM), as foliar sprays, were applied during the fruit enlargement and color transition stages. Key physiological parameters such as leaf growth, photosynthesis, and chlorophyll fluorescence were assessed. Interestingly, foliar Mg application increased the key physiological parameters, with the 3 mM treatment (M3) delivering the best improvement. Compared to the control, the M3 treatment increased dry weight and leaf area by 35.9% and 37.2%, respectively. Specifically, the foliar Mg application (M3) improved the photosynthesis (Pn), transpiration (Tr), and stomatal conductance (gs) of leaves when compared to the control. Additionally, the foliar Mg application improved the PSII photosynthetic efficiency, electron yield, and electron transport rates, following the order M2 > M3 > M1 > M0 > M4. This study demonstrated the essential role of foliar-applied Mg, with GABA, in improving grape physiology. Interestingly, the curve-fitting analysis of foliar Mg concentration and grape yield identified 2.14 mM of Mg as the optimal concentration for promoting grape growth.

The wheat–maize rotation system in the North China Plain (NCP) has a large amount of crop straw. However, improper crop straw management and blind fertilization lead to nutrient imbalance and accelerated nutrient loss from the soil, ultimately leading to nutrient deficiency affecting the wheat–maize rotation system. In order to explore the effects of nutrient deficiency on the yield and nutrient use efficiency of wheat and maize, the experiment was conducted in a randomized complete block design consisting of five treatments with three replicates for each treatment: (1) a potassium fertilizer deficiency and appropriate nitrogen and phosphate fertilizer treatment (NP); (2) a phosphate fertilizer deficiency and appropriate nitrogen and potassium fertilizer treatment (NK); (3) a nitrogen fertilizer deficiency and appropriate phosphate and potassium fertilizer treatment (PK); (4) an adequate nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium fertilizer treatment (NPK); and (5) a no-fertilizer treatment (CK). The results showed that, compared with CK, the yields of wheat and maize treated with NPK were increased by 21.5% and 27.5%, respectively, and the accumulation of the dry matter of the wheat and maize was increased by 42.5% and 57.3%. In all the deficiency treatments, the NK treatment performed better in terms of yield compared to the NP and PK treatments, while the NP treatment demonstrated a greater increase in dry matter accumulation. The NPK treatment significantly improved the nitrogen use efficiency (NUE) and nitrogen harvest index (NHI) of the wheat and maize, which resulted in higher nitrogen accumulation in the NPK treatment, and the NP treatment was the best among the other nutrient deficiency treatments. The inorganic nitrogen content showed a similar trend. In conclusion, nutrient deficiency can severely restrict crop growth. Nitrogen deficiency can significantly reduce crop yields. Phosphorus deficiency had a greater impact than potassium deficiency in terms of nutrient absorption and accumulation. Therefore, nitrogen fertilizer application should be emphasized in crop rotation systems, with moderate increases in phosphorus fertilizer application. This practice can effectively improve the nutrient deficiency under the wheat and maize rotation system in the NCP and complete a rational fertilization system.

The objective of this study was to investigate the impact of nutrient starvation on the growth, biochemical, metabolomic, and biological traits of Lavandula viridis L’Hér and Thymus lotocephalus G. López and R. Morales in vitro cultures. In both species, a reduction in shoot growth and in the production of chlorophyll and carotenoids was observed in cultures grown under nutrient-deficient media (especially Fe and N) compared to those grown under control conditions. The highest levels of hydrogen peroxide and lipid peroxidation, two indicators of oxidative stress, were observed in L. viridis cultures grown under N deficiency and in T. lotocephalus under P and Fe limitation. The results demonstrated that nutrient deficiency led to a 72% and 62% increase in the quantified phenolic compounds in L. viridis and T. lotocephalus, respectively. The highest concentrations of the major compound in both species—rosmarinic acid—were observed in cultures grown under Mg-deficient (60.7 ± 1.0 mg/gDW) and Fe-deficient (50.0 ± 0.4 mg/gDW) conditions in L. viridis and T. lotocephalus, respectively. Furthermore, nutrient starvation enhanced the capacity of green extracts to inhibit three enzymes (tyrosinase, elastase, and hyaluronidase) associated with anti-aging and their antioxidant properties.

Macronutrient deficiency inhibits the growth and development of chili plants. One of the non-destructive methods that plays a role in processing plant image data based on specific characteristics is computer vision. This study uses 5166 image data after augmentation process for six plant health conditions. But the analysis of one feature cannot represent plant health condition. Therefore, a careful combination of features is required. This study combines three types of features with HSV and RGB for color, GLCM and LBP for texture, and Hu moments and centroid distance for shapes. Each feature and its combination are trained and tested using the same MLP architecture. The combination of RGB, GLCM, Hu moments, and Distance of centroid features results the best performance. In addition, this study compares the MLP architecture used with previous studies such as SVM, Random Forest Technique, Naive Bayes, and CNN. CNN produced the best performance, followed by SVM and MLP, with accuracy reaching 97.76%, 90.55% and 89.70%, respectively. Although MLP has lower accuracy than CNN, the model for identifying plant health conditions has a reasonably good success rate to be applied in a simple agricultural environment.

The health monitoring of vegetable and fruit plants, especially during the critical seedling growth stage, is essential to protect them from various environmental stresses and prevent yield loss. Different environmental stresses may cause similar symptoms, making visual inspection alone unreliable and potentially leading to an incorrect diagnosis and delayed corrective actions. This study aimed to address these challenges by proposing a segmented regression model and a Mask R-CNN model for detecting the initiation time and symptoms of nutrient stress in cucumber seedlings within a controlled environment. Nutrient stress was induced by applying two different treatments: an indicative nutrient deficiency with an electrical conductivity (EC) of 0 dSm−1, and excess nutrients with a high-concentration nutrient solution and an EC of 6 dSm−1. Images of the seedlings were collected using an automatic image acquisition system two weeks after germination. The early initiation of nutrient stress was detected using a segmented regression analysis, which analyzed morphological and textural features extracted from the images. For the Mask R-CNN model, 800 seedling images were annotated based on the segmented regression analysis results. Nutrient-stressed seedlings were identified from the initiation day to 4.2 days after treatment application. The Mask R-CNN model, implemented using ResNet-101 for feature extraction, leveraged transfer learning to train the network with a smaller dataset, thereby reducing the processing time. This study identifies the top projected canopy area (TPCA), energy, entropy, and homogeneity as prospective indicators of nutritional deficits in cucumber seedlings. The results from the Mask R-CNN model are promising, with the best-fit image achieving an F1 score of 93.4%, a precision of 93%, and a recall of 94%. These findings demonstrate the effectiveness of the integrated statistical and machine learning (ML) methods for the early and accurate diagnosis of nutrient stress. The use of segmented regression for initial detection, followed by the Mask R-CNN for precise identification, emphasizes the potential of this approach to enhance agricultural practices. By facilitating the early detection and accurate diagnosis of nutrient stress, this approach allows for quicker and more precise treatments, which improve crop health and productivity. Future research could expand this methodology to other crop types and field conditions to enhance image processing techniques, and researchers may also integrate real-time monitoring systems.

In Asia, rice is the most consumed grain by humans, serving as a staple food in India. The yield of rice paddies is easily affected by nutrient deficiencies and leaf diseases. To overcome this problem and improve the yield productivity of rice, nutrient deficiency and leaf disease identification are essential. The main nutrient elements in paddies are potassium, phosphorus, and nitrogen (PPN), the deficiency of any of which strongly affects the rice plants. When multiple nutrient elements are deficient, the leaf color of the rice plants is altered. To overcome this problem, optimal nutrient delivery is required. Hence, the present study proposes the use of Fuzzy C Means clustering (FCM) with Improved Tunicate Swarm Optimization (ITSO) to segment the lesions in rice plant leaves and identify the deficient nutrients. The proposed ITSO integrates the Tunicate Swarm Optimization (TSO) and Bacterial Foraging Optimization (BFO) approaches. The Hybrid Convolutional Neural Network (HCNN), a deep learning model, is used with ITSO to classify the rice leaf diseases, as well as nutrient deficiencies in the leaves. Two datasets, namely, a field work dataset and a Kaggle dataset, were used for the present study. The proposed HCNN-ITSO classified Bacterial Leaf Bright (BLB), Narrow Brown Leaf Spot (NBLS), Sheath Rot (SR), Brown Spot (BS), and Leaf Smut (LS) in the field work dataset. Furthermore, the potassium-, phosphorus-, and nitrogen-deficiency-presenting leaves were classified using the proposed HCNN-ITSO in the Kaggle dataset. The MATLAB platform was used for experimental analysis in the field work and Kaggle datasets in terms of various performance measures. When compared to previous methods, the proposed method achieved the best accuracies of 98.8% and 99.01% in the field work and Kaggle datasets, respectively.

The compositional nutrient diagnosis (CND) method considers the multiple relationships among nutrients and has been proposed to evaluate the nutritional status of plants in place of the univariate and bivariate methods. As it is mathematically based and considers the interactions among all nutrients at the same time, it avoids the errors and trends observed in the calculations of other methods estimating nutritional status, enabling a greater relationship with productivity. The objective of this study was to obtain the CND norms for high-yielding populations of potato crops. For this, 587 samples were used from 21 experimental areas in the state of São Paulo, Brazil to correlate the leaf nutrient contents and the yields of potato crops. Crops with yields higher than 48,993.24 kg ha−1 were considered to have high yields, and the Mahalanobis distance separated the balanced samples from the nutritionally unbalanced ones. Thus, the CND-ilr method generated the norms and classified the 587 samples as nutritionally balanced with a high yield (5% of the total), nutritionally unbalanced with a low yield (92%), nutritionally unbalanced with a high yield (0.3%), or nutritionally balanced with a low yield (2.7%), with accuracy, sensitivity, specificity, NPV, and PPV scores of 96.9, 97.1, 93.6, 64.4, and 99.6%, respectively.

BackgroundMalnutrition is common after stroke. Stroke patients often have a suboptimal energy intake, body weight and inadequate blood nutrient levels. Nutrient insufficiencies may not be detected, but their recognition is essential to provide adequate nutritional support after a stroke. This comprehensive summary of the literature is a collection of data on blood levels of a broad selection of nutrients involved in restoring cerebral blood flow and functional brain connectivity in stroke patients compared to controls.MethodsEmbase and MEDLINE were searched for studies published in English in the period 1980–2022. Studies including adult stroke subjects and controls whose blood samples were analyzed for docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), uridine, choline, folate, vitamin B6, vitamin B12, vitamin C, vitamin E, selenium, coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10), carnitine, arginine, or taurine were selected. If there were >3 reports (k) per nutrient, results were generated with an unadjusted and age-adjusted random-effects meta-analysis model. Risk of bias was evaluated for relevant domains from the ROBINS-I tool and with Egger's test.ResultsOne hundred five reports on blood nutrient levels were extracted from 56 eligible studies. Overall, meta-analyses showed lower blood levels of most nutrients in stroke patients compared to controls. The number of reports and the statistical significance for the unadjusted data were: folate (k = 27; p = 0.005), vitamin B12 (k = 23; p = 0.002), vitamin E (k = 11; p = 0.013), DHA (k = 7, p = 0.015), EPA (k = 7; p = 0.004), vitamin C (k = 6; p = 0.020), and selenium (k = 6; p = 0.018). No significant decreases were observed for vitamin B6 (k = 6; p = 0.52) and arginine (k = 4; p = 0.93). For other selected nutrients, there were insufficient reports to perform a meta-analysis. Available reports pointed toward lower (CoQ10, choline; k = 2), higher (taurine; k = 2), or unchanged (carnitine, uridine; k = 1) blood levels after stroke. In general, risk of bias was low.ConclusionOur findings indicate that nutrient insufficiencies occur for many nutrients that are involved in repair processes after stroke. The low blood levels of folate, vitamin B12, EPA, DHA, vitamin C, vitamin E, selenium, and possibly CoQ10 and choline, highlight the presence of a suboptimal nutritional status after stroke. The inclusion of targeted nutritional interventions to further support recovery should receive consideration in the multidisciplinary context of stroke rehabilitation.

Iran is a country with different soils and climatic zones that affect the nutrient concentration in the produced wheat. Since wheat is one major component of Iranian diet, this survey was performed to investigate the concentration of micronutrients including copper (Cu), manganese (Mn), iron (Fe), and zinc (Zn) in wheat grains of Iran. For this purpose, a total of 1876 grain samples were collected from the wheat grown lands of Iran and analyzed for the micronutrients. Results revealed that the grain yields were found 5.50 and 2.02 ton ha−1 for irrigated and rainfed wheat, respectively. The average concentration of Zn, Fe, Cu, and Mn in the wheat was 26, 32.76, 34.7, and 5.94 mg kg−1 respectively. The spatial distribution of Zn, Fe, and Mn showed that the wheat produced in the south and southwestern, east and southwestern, and east were more enriched, respectively. While, the wheat produced in the central, south, and southwestern areas contained a higher concentration of Cu. Moreover, results showed that the average concentration of Zn (26 mg kg−1) and Fe (32.76 mg kg−1) was lower than the recommended concentrations for human health (i.e. Zn = 41 mg kg−1; Fe = 57 mg kg−1), which indicates a deficiency of these elements in the wheat grains. Due to the calcareous nature of the soils of Iran, alkaline pH, and low amount of organic matter, the bioavailability of nutrients are low and deficiency symptoms are revealed. Moreover, by increasing grain yield the concentration of grain elements decreases, which shows the effect of new varieties on intensifying the nutrient deficiency. The present study revealed the nutritional status of wheat grown in Iran and confirmed deficiency of Fe and Zn. This study provided information to the decision-makers to overcome this problem by employing proper strategies such as fortification and enrichment.

Lettuce tipburn is a physiological disorder characterized by marginal necrosis and curling of inner, younger leaves caused by localized calcium deficiency, especially in low evapotranspiration environments that restrict mass flow and thus calcium mobility. Severe tipburn negatively affects the marketability and quality of greenhouse-grown hydroponic lettuce. We aimed to assess the effectiveness of a chemical-based, calcium-mobilizing biostimulant for mitigating lettuce tipburn when applied in hydroponic nutrient solutions. Butterhead lettuce (Lactuca sativa ‘Rex’) was grown indoors under warm-white light-emitting diodes at a mean photosynthetic photon flux density of 300 μmol⋅m−2⋅s−1 for 11 days. Subsequently, we transplanted seedlings into deep-water-culture hydroponic trays in a greenhouse at an air temperature of 24.6 ± 1.2 °C, relative humidity of 76.2% ± 7.4%, and 20-hour photoperiod with supplemental lighting from high-pressure sodium lamps. The plants were grown in nutrient solutions with and without the biostimulant codenamed CC US-2105 at two concentrations (22 and 220 μL⋅L−1). Data were collected from plant samples at three harvests at 14, 21, and 28 days after transplant (DAT). At 14 DAT, there was no tipburn under any treatments. Compared with the control, the biostimulant at 22 μL⋅L−1 increased shoot dry mass by 31%. At 21 DAT, the biostimulant at 220 μL⋅L−1 eliminated tipburn, and the biostimulant increased shoot fresh weight by 28%, irrespective of the concentration. At 28 DAT, despite sufficient calcium in the whole plant and the remaining nutrient solution, severe tipburn still occurred in plants that did not receive the biostimulant (control). Compared with the control, the biostimulant at the higher concentration of 220 μL⋅L−1 decreased the tipburn rating by 88% and the number of leaves with tipburn by 85%, increased the plant diameter by 11%, increased the total leaf number by six, and accumulated higher levels of manganese and zinc. In contrast, these parameters remained unaffected at the lower biostimulant concentration of 22 μL⋅L−1. At 28 DAT, shoot biomass was unaffected by the biostimulant. In conclusion, the calcium-mobilizing biostimulant is an effective strategy to mitigate hydroponic lettuce tipburn without decreasing biomass accumulation in greenhouse conditions.

Highlights * Pseudochlorella pringsheimii showed a high potential of lipids 25% lipid accumulation. * Pseudochlorella pringsheimii could be cultured at large scale in potobioreactor, as potential feedstock for biodiesel production. *Bodiesel FAME contains C 16:0, C 18:1 and C 18:2 as a maim FAM. *N, P starvation collective with high Fe3+was the main driver behind lipid accumulation. * Pseudochlorella pringsheimii biodiesel have appropriate biodiesel properties, as ASTM and EU standards. * C. ellipsoidea can be used as a potential feedstock for biodiesel production.

Well-balanced nutrition is important for the successful cultivation of healthy plants. In this paper, we demonstrate a nondestructive optical method that can sense a deficiency of certain nutrients. The setup was tested on hydroponically grown Ocimum basilicum. The plants were subjected to nutrient deficiency by the exclusion of one of the essential elements (Fe, Mg, P, N) from the hydroponic solution. A control group of plants, fed by the balanced hydroponic solution, was also grown under the same conditions. The proposed method tracks and records the optical transmittance of the plants' leaves. All groups exhibit clearly defined day-night Circadian rhythms. When compared to the control group, the treated plants exhibited modified circadian rhythms of the optical transmission, suggesting an early indicator of the plants' stress. The condition of the plants under test was also assessed by the more common (destructive) methods such as: measurements of the determination of the photosynthetic pigment content, dray weight determination and the efficiency of PSII. Several biological parameters were observed, calculated and compared to the graphs of optical transmission dependence in real time. Presented results have demonstrated a significant potential of the proposed optical method for the early detection of plants' stress in hydroponic cultivation.

Abstract Integrated nutrient management is a promising way to avoid plant nutrient shortages because of the positive relationship between the bioavailability of nutrients and greater economic interest in their application through organic amendments and microbial application. To examine how compost, charcoal, and rhizobium influence maize development, an experiment was set up in a container. In addition to the appropriate amounts of nitrogen, phosphorous, and potassium, the soil in the allotted pots was treated with 50 ml of rhizobium, 5 tonnes of compost, and 2.5 tonnes of biochar before maize seeds were planted. A total of nine treatments (with three replicates each) were arranged in a completely randomized design for this experiment. Various agronomic, chemical, and physiological data were measured and recorded after the crop was harvested 110 days after sowing. The results showed that when biochar, compost, and rhizobium were applied together, the root fresh biomass rose by 43.4%, the root dry biomass increased by 38.3%, and the shoot length increased by 61.7%, compared to the control treatment. Chlorophyll content (41.3% higher), photosynthetic rate (58.5% higher), transpiration rate (64.4% higher), quantum yield (32.6% higher), and stomatal conductivity (25.3% higher) were all significantly improved compared to the control. Soil levels of nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium were also improved with this treatment compared to the control. The combined use of biochar, compost, and rhizobium was more successful than any of the components used individually in boosting maize yields. Based on the findings of our study, the integration of rhizobium, biochar, and compost within a unified treatment shown a substantial enhancement in both the growth and yield of maize.

Agronomic biofortification of crops is a promising approach that can improve the nutritional value of staple foods by alleviating dietary micronutrient deficiencies. Iodine deficiency is prevalent in many countries, including Australia, but it is not clear what foliar application strategies will be effective for iodine fortification of grain. This study hypothesised that combining adjuvants with iodine in foliar sprays would improve iodine penetration in wheat, leading to more efficient biofortification of grains. The glasshouse experiment included a total of nine treatments, including three reference controls: 1) Water; 2) potassium iodate (KIO3) and 3) potassium chloride (KCl); and a series of six different non-ionic surfactant or oil-based adjuvants: 4) KIO3 + BS1000; 5) KIO3 + Pulse® Penetrant; 6) KIO3 + Uptake®; 7) KIO3 + Hot-Up®; 8) KIO3 + Hasten® and 9) KIO3 + Synerterol® Horti Oil. Wheat was treated at heading, and again during the early milk growth stage. Adding the organosilicon-based adjuvant (Pulse®) to the spray formulation resulted in a significant increase in grain loading of iodine to 1269 µg/kg compared to the non-adjuvant KIO3 control at 231µg/kg, and the water and KCl controls (both 51µg/kg). The second most effective adjuvant was Synerterol® Horti Oil, which increased grain iodine significantly to 450µg/kg. The Uptake®, BS1000, Hasten®, and Hot-Up® adjuvants did not affect grain iodine concentrations relative to the KIO3 control. Importantly, iodine application and the subsequent increase in grain iodine had no significant effects on biomass production and grain yield relative to the controls. These results indicate that adjuvants can play an important role in agronomic biofortification practices, and organosilicon-based products have a great potential to enhance foliar penetration resulting in a higher translocation rate of foliar-applied iodine to grains, which is required to increase the iodine density of staple grains effectively.

Low evaporative conditions in indoor (vertical) farms reduce mass-flow–driven transport of calcium (Ca), resulting in tipburn of lettuce. Lettuce tipburn symptoms develop along the margins of young leaves and the growing shoot tip, where necrotic tissue forms as a result of Ca deficiency. For indoor farms, lettuce tipburn poses a major economic risk because the crop becomes unmarketable as a result of its appearance. Difference in tipburn sensitivity among cultivars has been thought to be related to differences in growth rate, morphology, or anthocyanin production, whereas most commercial lettuce cultivars have been known to express tipburn symptoms in the indoor farm setting. We created a tipburn-inducing growing condition in walk-in growth chambers that limits plant potential transpiration rate while achieving relatively high growth rates, and examined 10 commercial cultivars selected for tipburn sensitivity. Selected cultivars differ in morphology (butterhead, romaine, and leafy type) and color (red or green; resulting from anthocyanin production). All cultivars expressed visually detectable tipburn symptoms 22 ± 2.6 days after transplanting, and varied tipburn rates of 7% to 41% of all leaves at the time of harvest (28 days after transplanting). Despite cultivar-specific variation, neither lettuce morphology nor anthocyanin content were significantly correlated with the incidence or severity of tipburn. However, cultivars recommended for “indoor” production by seed suppliers had less tipburn severity than those recommended for outdoor or both indoor and outdoor production systems. Although tipburn risk may vary under other environmental conditions, low evaporative conditions in this experiment caused tipburn symptoms in all tested cultivars at varying degrees of severity. Cultivar-specific average yield and tipburn severity were not correlated with the Ca concentrations in the inner leaves, suggesting that the amount of tissue Ca required to prevent tipburn is cultivar specific and not related to yield. Our selected tipburn-inducing condition was found to be effective in comparing tipburn sensitivity of lettuce cultivars for indoor farm settings, and similar fast-growing but low-evaporative conditions should be used to assess cultivars for indoor farm production.

Roots play a key role in withstanding wheat abiotic stress. In this work, we phenotyped seedling root morphology of two semi-dwarf bread wheat cultivars, the Chinese cv Lankaodali and the Italian cv Rebelde, under the hypothesis that these two genotypes have contrasting root traits and could be used as donors in breeding programs. Root development was compared in a semi-hydroponic screening, where full-strength (FS) vs. half-strength (HS) complete Hoagland’s solution represented high and moderate nutrient availability, and a screening comparing HS solution with tap water corresponding to a condition of nutrient starvation. Genotypes were further compared in soil under full watering (100% of field capacity) vs. drought stress (50% of field capacity). Lankaodali outperformed Rebelde by producing 50% more leaf mass and 70% more root mass in FS solution, 125% more leaf mass and 106% more root mass in HS solution, and 65% more leaf mass and 36% more root mass under nutrient starvation. This cv also showed a positive correlation between leaf mass and root length and mass (between r = 0.82–0.9 and r = 0.83–0.87, respectively, p < 0.05). In the soil screening experiment, Lankaodali produced more biomass than Rebelde regardless of water availability, 48% more leaf mass, 32% more root mass, and 31% more absolute rhizosheath mass (average across water availability treatments). Lankaodali proved to be more responsive than Rebelde to both water and nutrient availability. High values of broad-sense heritability—ranging between 0.80 for root mass and 0.90 for length in a hydroponic screen and 0.85 for rhizosheath size in soil—indicate that these traits could be useful for breeding.

Plants have evolved complex mechanisms to adapt to nutrient-deficient environments, including stimulating lateral root proliferation into local soil patches with high nutrient content in response to heterogeneous nutrient distribution. Despite the widespread occurrence of this phenomenon in soil, the effect of heterogeneous nutrient distribution on the accumulation of secondary compounds in plant biomass and their exudation by roots remains largely unknown. This study aims to fill this critical knowledge gap by investigating how deficiency and unequal distributions of nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), and iron (Fe) affect plant growth and accumulation of the antimalarial drug artemisinin (AN) in leaves and roots of Artemisia annua, as well as AN exudation by roots. Heterogeneous N and P supplies strongly increased root exudation of AN in half of a split-root system exposed to nutrient deficiency. By contrast, exposure to a homogeneous nitrate and phosphate deficiency did not modulate root exudation of AN. This indicates that a combination of local and systemic signals, reflecting low and high nutritional statuses, respectively, were required to enhance AN exudation. This exudation response was independent of the regulation of root hair formation, which was predominantly modulated by the local signal. In contrast to the heterogeneous supply of N and P, heterogeneous Fe supply did not modulate AN root exudation but increased AN accumulation in locally Fe-deficient roots. No modulation of nutrient supply significantly changed the accumulation of AN in A. annua leaves. The impact of a heterogeneous nitrate supply on growth and phytochemical composition was also investigated in Hypericum perforatum plants. Unlike in A. annue, the uneven N supply did not significantly influence the exudation of secondary compounds in the roots of H. perforatum. However, it did enhance the accumulation of several biologically active compounds, such as hypericin, catechin, and rutin isomers, in the leaves of H. perforatum. We propose that the capacity of plants to induce the accumulation and/or differential exudation of secondary compounds under heterogeneous nutrient supply is both species- and compound-specific. The ability to differentially exude AN may contribute to A. annua’s adaptation to nutrient disturbances and modulate allelopathic and symbiotic interactions in the rhizosphere.

The North China Plain has a typical winter wheat–summer corn double-cropping pattern. The effects of nutrient deficiency conditions on the root characteristics and yield of summer corn in the double-cropping system were studied for four years. Long-term monotonous fertilization patterns undermine crop rotation systems and are detrimental to the sustainability of agricultural production. To complement the development of rational fertilization strategies by exploring the response of crop rotation systems to nutrient deficiencies, an experiment was conducted in a randomized complete block design consisting of five treatments with three replicates for each treatment: (1) an adequate supply of nitrogen and phosphate fertilizers and potash-deficient treatment (T1); (2) an adequate supply of nitrogen and potash fertilizers and phosphorus-deficient treatment (T2); (3) an adequate supply of phosphorus and potash fertilizers and nitrogen-deficient treatment (T3); (4) nutrient-sufficient treatment for crop growth (T4); and (5) no-fertilizer treatment (CK). The results showed that different nutrient treatments had significant effects on the root length density (RLD), root surface area density (RSAD), and root dry weight density (RDWD) in summer corn. At the physiological maturity stage (R6), the root indexes of RLD, RSAD, and RDWD were significantly higher in the 0–20 cm soil layer in T4 compared to CK, with an increase of 86.2%, 131.4%, and 100.0%, respectively. Similarly, in the 20–40 cm soil layer, the root indexes of T4 were 85.7%, 61.3%, and 50.0% higher than CK, with varied differences observed in the other nutrient-deficient treatments. However, there was no significant difference among the treatments in the 40–60 cm layer except for T4, whose root index showed a difference. The root fresh weight and root dry matter in T4, T3, T2, and T1 were increased to different degrees compared with CK. In addition, these differences in root indexes affected the annual yield of crops, which increased by 20.96%, 21.95%, and 8.14% in T4, T2, and T1, respectively, compared to CK. The spike number and the number of grains per spike of T4 were 10.8% and 8.3% higher than those of CK, which led to the differences in summer corn yields. The 1000-kernel weight of T4, T2, and T1 were 9.5%, 8.8%, and 7.4% higher than that of CK, whereas the determining nutrient was nitrogen fertilizer, and phosphorus fertilizer had a higher effect on yield than potassium fertilizer. This provides a theoretical basis for the effect of nutrient deficiency conditions on yield stability in a double-cropping system.

The social and economic benefits for smallholders cultivating oil palms are usually associated with environmental degradation and high resource consumption inherent to intensive farming systems. Nonetheless, the extensification of agricultural practices by many smallholders due to limited access to funds, agricultural inputs, or knowledge may result in a more environmental-friendly oil palm production. Here, we assessed the trade-offs between production and soil degradation in two oil palm farming systems established on forested land in the Ngwei region (Cameroon) comparing practices with no (smallholder system, SH) and low (elite system, EL) agricultural inputs (fertilizer, herbicides). Soil characteristics, nutrient deficiencies and oil palm production were determined in forty-two plantations of different age covering one full plantation cycle. The rates of soil organic carbon (SOC) loss were similar in both farming systems (−0.029 ​± ​0.012 ​kg ​C m−2 yr−1), but soil bulk density and pH were not affected by the forest conversion. Soil available potassium (K) decreased sharply during the first 7.3 ​± ​0.9 years before stabilizing. Potassium fertilization limited leaflet K deficiencies during the immature phase in EL, but was not sufficient to prevent K deficiencies during the production phase, reaching similarly low K nutrition index as in SH (0.68 ​± ​0.13). Oil palm growth was similar in both systems, but fresh fruit bunches (FFB) production was enhanced by 38 ​± ​11% in EL. The nitrogen (N) deficiencies were pronounced in both systems. However, the higher biomass export in EL induced phosphorus depletion in soils and reinforced N depletion as compared to SH. Despite limited soil degradation, nutrient depletion in the agroecosystem threatens the sustainability of these two low-input oil palm farming systems. This calls for optimization, such as a targeted intensification in the EL system and a reduced oil palm density in the SH system.

Nutrient-depleted soil is a major constraint for crop production, particularly for fruits. Here, we investigated the different response of nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), and potassium (K) deficiency on the growth and development of strawberry (Fragaria ×ananassa Duch.) in sand culture under greenhouse conditions. Compared with K, the lack of N or P is more unfavorable to strawberry growth and development. N deficiency affected shoot-root (S/R) ratio at different growth stages, and decreased the shoot biomass. P deficiency greatly increased the N content but decreased K content of the plants, which means P is of advantage to regulate the absorption and utilization of N and K nutrients in plants. Meanwhile, P has a profound influence on fruit quality, such as total soluble (TSS) sugar content. K deficiency is not conducive to fruit coloring and the formation of high-quality commercial fruits. The results contribute to a better understanding of the difference of N, P, or K deficiency on strawberry growth, nutrient absorption, and fruit quality during the whole growth period.

BackgroundNitrogen(N), phosphorus(P), and potassium(K) are essential elements that are highly deficient during plant growth. Existing diagnostic methods are not suitable for rapid diagnosis of large-scale planting areas. Near-ground remote sensing technology based on unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) and sensor is often applied to crop growth condition monitoring and agricultural management. It has been proven to be used for monitoring plant N, P, and K content. However, its integrated diagnostic model has been less studied.MethodsIn this study, we collected UAV multispectral images of Ligusticum chuanxiong Hort. in different periods of nutritional stress and constructed recognition models with different heights and algorithms. The optimal model variables were selected, and the effects of different sampling heights and modeling algorithms on the model efficiency under the time span were evaluated. At the same time, we evaluated the timeliness of the model based on leaf element content determination and SPAD. It was also validated in field crop production.ResultsThe results showed that the LR algorithm’s model had optimal performance at all periods and flight altitudes. The optimal accuracy of N-deficient plants identification reached 100%, P/K-deficient plants reached 92.4%, and normal plants reached 91.7%. The results of UAV multispectral diagnosis, chemical diagnosis, and SPAD value diagnosis were consistent in the diagnosis of N deficiency, and the diagnosis of P and K deficiency was slightly lagging behind that of chemical diagnosis.ConclusionsThis research uses UAV remote sensing technology to establish an efficient, fast, and timely nutritional diagnosis method for L. Chuanxiong, which is applied in production. Meanwhile, the standardized production of medicinal plant resources provides new solutions.

Abstract Background Homemade diets are a worldwide trend, and many recipes are currently available on websites but may not be considered balanced. This study aimed to evaluate if the number of ingredients, supplement, or vegetarian/vegan-only ingredients included in a recipe influence the nutrient content of homemade diets for dogs and cats. Chemical analyses were performed on 75 diets for dogs and 25 for cats prepared according to websites’ recipes, and minerals were analyzed by inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry (ICP-OES). Results Canine diets that met fat requirements had more ingredients than those below recommendations. None of the cat diets met iron requirements, and feline diets that met requirements of manganese had fewer ingredients and those that supplied requirements of protein and sodium had more ingredients than the diets below recommendations (p

Tillering is an important phenological stage, which is strongly related to the yield in spike components and final grain yield during winter wheat growth. Precipitation during the fallow season (fallow precipitation) influences tillering in winter wheat on the semi-arid Chinese Loess Plateau. However, little work has been done regarding tiller number changes under various types of fertilization and amounts of fallow precipitation on a long-term scale. Effects of fallow precipitation and fertilization on tiller were investigated in a winter wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) system in a 28-year field study (1990 to 2017) in a semiarid agro-ecosystem. Tiller number, spike number and grain yield were measured in four fertilization conditions: control without fertilizer (CK); mineral nitrogen fertilizer alone (N); mineral phosphorus fertilizer alone (P); mineral nitrogen and phosphorus fertilizer together (NP). Based on the long-term annual fallow precipitation, dry years (mean annual fallow precipitation) were distinguished. Phosphorus fertilization alone significantly increased the mean annual tiller number (23%), and the increase in tiller number was higher in wet years (29%) than in the dry years (17%). However, nitrogen fertilization alone had little effect on mean tiller number, while nitrogen and phosphorus together significantly increased mean annual tiller number (30%), mean tiller number in wet years (45%) and mean tiller number in dry years (17%). Tiller number was significantly and positively correlated with fallow precipitation in dry years for all fertilizer treatments, whereas it was weakly and either positively or negatively correlated with fallow precipitation in wet years depending on the treatment. This study found positive correlations between tiller number and fallow precipitation in the CK and NP treatments, and it found negative correlations between tiller number and fallow precipitation in the treatments with nitrogen fertilization alone or phosphorous fertilization alone in wet years. Understanding the impacts of fallow precipitation and fertilization on tiller development shed light on ways to improve crop production in rain-fed agricultural regions.

Long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) are RNA molecules with functions independent of any protein-coding potential. A whole transcriptome (RNA-seq) study of Arabidopsis shoots under iron sufficient and deficient conditions was carried out to determine the genes that are iron-regulated in the shoots. We identified two previously unannotated transcripts on chromosome 1 that are significantly iron-regulated. We have called this iron-regulated lncRNA, CAN OF SPINACH (COS). cos mutants have altered iron levels in leaves and seeds. Despite the low iron levels in the leaves, cos mutants have higher chlorophyll levels than WT plants. Moreover, cos mutants have abnormal development during iron deficiency. Roots of cos mutants are longer than those of WT plants, when grown on iron deficient medium. In addition, cos mutant plants accumulate singlet oxygen during iron deficiency. The mechanism through which COS affects iron deficiency responses is unclear, but small regions of sequence similarity to several genes involved in iron deficiency responses occur in COS, and small RNAs from these regions have been detected. We hypothesize that COS is required for normal adaptation to iron deficiency conditions.

Plants are often faced with an array of adverse environmental conditions and must respond appropriately to grow and develop. In angiosperms, the plant hormone ethylene is known to play a protective role in responses to abiotic stress. Here we investigated whether ethylene mediates resistance to abiotic stress in the liverwort Marchantia polymorpha, one of the most distant land plant relatives of angiosperms. Using existing M. polymorpha knockout mutants of Mpein3, and Mpctr1, two genes in the ethylene signaling pathway, we examined responses to heat, salinity, nutrient deficiency, and continuous far-red light. The Mpein3 and Mpctr1 mutants were previously shown to confer ethylene insensitivity and constitutive ethylene responses, respectively. Using mild or sub-lethal doses of each stress treatment, we found that Mpctr1 mutants displayed stress resilience similar to or greater than the wild type. In contrast, Mpein3 mutants showed less resilience than the wild type. Consistent with ethylene being a stress hormone, we demonstrated that ethylene production is enhanced by each stress treatment. These results suggest that ethylene plays a role in protecting against abiotic stress in M. polymorpha, and that ethylene has likely been conserved as a stress hormone since before the evolutionary divergence of bryophytes from the land plant lineage approximately 450 Ma.

Deficits in the mineral Zn are responsible for a sizable proportion of the world’s disease burden and child mortality. With the increasing success rate of biofortification in major crops, the development of a genotype with enhanced Zn bioavailability will be an efficient and sustainable solution to nutrient deficiency-related problems. Due to the complex chemistry of the human system, the absorption of Zn from cereals is lower. This complexity is alleviated by phytate, a major phosphorus-storing compound in cereal and legume seeds, which negatively affects Zn binding. The results of recent studies on the distribution of elements and micronutrient speciation in seeds provide strong evidence for the presence of distinct Zn pools. This observation is supported by data from biofortified transgenic plant research. Several studies identify nicotinamide, a metal chelator, as a pivotal molecule. The loading of Zn into grains has been reported to increase with nicotinamide levels, which is a crucial finding. Intestinal Zn absorption can be greatly improved by nicotinamide. Furthermore, bioavailability tests suggest that the use of nano Zn-enabled devices could be an effective strategy to enable plant biofortification, which may significantly boost the Zn content in various cereal crops. This review comprehensively evaluated the scientific publications indexed in WoS, Scopus, and various other reliable databases and explored insights into how nano-enabled technology could be a solution for enhancing Zn content in cereal crops for combating malnutrition in humans.

Tropical soils are highly-weathered acidic soils and frequently present two intersecting problems that can be detrimental to plant development: low phosphorus (P) and high manganese (Mn) availability. Mn can be phytotoxic, damaging the photosynthetic apparatus and/or competing with other nutrients. Eucalyptus grandis is often cultivated in such soil types and, despite being a tree generally tolerant to Mn excess, P deficiency may exacerbate toxicity. Arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungi are known for their ability to provide P to the host plant in exchange of photosynthates. This symbiosis may also decrease Mn accumulation and overall alleviate metal stress. In a glasshouse experiment, E. grandis plants were grown for seven months in soil with low P availability adjusted to three Mn dose levels (control, 75 and 150 mg kg–1), with (AM) or without (NM) inoculation with Rhizophagus irregularis. We measured biomass, height, flavonoids (anthocyanin/flavonol) and chlorophyll indexes, chlorophyll a fluorescence parameters, AM colonization and Mn, P, Mg, K and Fe concentrations in shoots and roots. All plants presented low biomass production, and shoot P concentrations ranged from 0.13 to 0.52 g kg–1. Mn additions decreased mycorrhizal colonization, but no other negative impacts were seen in E. grandis, indicating that this species is relatively tolerant to excess Mn. At dose 75, shoots accumulated up to 2,000 mg Mn kg–1; however, this amount was not detrimental to most parameters, especially in NM plants, which had higher growth and Mg concentrations while presenting much lower flavonol and anthocyanin contents. At dose 150, plant Mn concentrations were similar to those at 75 Mn, despite higher soil availability, indicating that shoot concentrations around 2,000 mg kg–1 were a threshold for E. grandis under P deficiency. AM colonization intensity and arbuscule abundance were overall low, resulting in no improvements in P nutrition nor reduction of Mn uptake in high Mn treatments. However, AM symbiosis led to higher chlorophyll contents and non-photochemical quenching values, which are important in withstanding abiotic stress. Even though AM fungi inoculation did not improve P uptake, multivariate analysis suggests that the mycorrhizal pathway influenced nutrient acquisition in AM plants. Our results show that in E. grandis Mn excess had an alleviation and a hormetic effect, mitigating P deficiency stress rather than being phytotoxic. AM symbiosis did not improve mineral nutrition, despite providing some benefits involved in stress tolerance.

The development of automated, image-based, high-throughput plant phenotyping enabled the simultaneous measurement of many plant traits. Big and complex phenotypic datasets require advanced statistical methods which enable the extraction of the most valuable traits when combined with other measurements, interpretation, and understanding of their (eco)physiological background. Nutrient deficiency in plants causes specific symptoms that can be easily detected by multispectral imaging, 3D scanning, and chlorophyll fluorescence measurements. Screening of numerous image-based phenotypic traits of common bean plants grown in nutrient-deficient solutions was conducted to optimize phenotyping and select the most valuable phenotypic traits related to the specific nutrient deficit. Discriminant analysis was used to compare the efficiency of groups of traits obtained by high-throughput phenotyping techniques (chlorophyll fluorescence, multispectral traits, and morphological traits) in discrimination between nutrients [nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), potassium (K), magnesium (Mg), and iron (Fe)] at early and prolonged deficiency. Furthermore, a recursive partitioning analysis was used to select variables within each group of traits that show the highest accuracy for assigning plants to the respective nutrient deficit treatment. Using the entire set of measured traits, the highest classification success by discriminant function was achieved using multispectral traits. In the subsequent measurements, chlorophyll fluorescence and multispectral traits achieved comparably high classification success. Recursive partitioning analysis was able to intrinsically identify variables within each group of traits and their threshold values that best separate the observations from different nutrient deficiency groups. Again, the highest success in assigning plants into their respective groups was achieved based on selected multispectral traits. Selected chlorophyll fluorescence traits also showed high accuracy for assigning plants into control, Fe, Mg, and P deficit but could not correctly assign K and N deficit plants. This study has shown the usefulness of combining high-throughput phenotyping techniques with advanced data analysis to determine and differentiate nutrient deficiency stress.

In this work, we tried to identify some specific chlorophyll a fluorescence (ChlF) parameters, that could enable detection of iron deficiency (Fedef) in radish plants (Raphanus sativus L.), before any visual symptoms appear. Changes in ChlF kinetics, JIP-test parameters, and chlorophyll content revealed that iron deficiency negatively affected PSII activity mainly via disruption of light absorption in light-harvesting complexes and by decreasing the activity of the primary quinone acceptor of PSII (QA). Iron deficiency was clearly reflected in the changes of some JIP-test parameters, such as time to reach maximal fluorescence (FM), Area, normalized total area under the OJIP curve, and number of QA redox turnovers until FM is reached. The visible symptoms of Fedef appeared after 7 d of stress application, while ChlF measurements allowed us to detect iron deficiency during 1-3 d. Our results suggest that analysis of ChlF signals has a high potential for early detection of iron deficiency in radish plants.

Soybean (Glycine max) is an important agricultural crop, but nutrient deficiencies frequently limit soybean production. While research has advanced our understanding of plant responses to long-term nutrient deficiencies, less is known about the signaling pathways and immediate responses to certain nutrient deficiencies, such as Pi and Fe deficiencies. Recent studies have shown that sucrose acts as a long-distance signal that is sent in increased concentrations from the shoot to the root in response to various nutrient deficiencies. Here, we mimicked nutrient deficiency-induced sucrose signaling by adding sucrose directly to the roots. To unravel transcriptomic responses to sucrose acting as a signal, we performed Illumina RNA-sequencing of soybean roots treated with sucrose for 20 min and 40 min, compared to non-sucrose-treated controls. We obtained a total of 260 million paired-end reads, mapping to 61,675 soybean genes, some of which are novel (not yet annotated) transcripts. Of these, 358 genes were upregulated after 20 min, and 2416 were upregulated after 40 min of sucrose exposure. GO (gene ontology) analysis revealed a high proportion of sucrose-induced genes involved in signal transduction, particularly hormone, ROS (reactive oxygen species), and calcium signaling, in addition to regulation of transcription. In addition, GO enrichment analysis indicates that sucrose triggers crosstalk between biotic and abiotic stress responses.
