The article presents an academic reflection on the experiencing and familiarising of strangeness. A theatrical performance for children, Yemaya - Queen of the Seas, is the base for a consideration of dealing with strangeness and the social changes generating such contact. The proposed analysis and interpretation of the play is based on selected philosophical views of Bernhard Waldenfels, Paul Tillich, Roman Ingarden and Zygmunt Bauman. Strangeness and change are topics rarely seen as appropriate for children. However, children experience these issues participating in them in different areas. Importantly - although these processes are taking place here and now, they are directed towards the future. It is today's children who will be living in a different world, in new situations and among people we consider strangers today. So how should we talk to children about familiarising strangeness and the changes that follow? Could art be an effective tool in this communication? From the interpretation of the content of the play, the conclusion about the primacy of ethical issues in dealing with strangeness emerges. It generate the need to draw the children's attention to this important aspect of social coexistence.

The research deals with the analytical study of the intellectual and aesthetic approaches to structural constructivism in the works of the Australian artist "John Morris", who gained international fame due to his artistic success, which is due to his creative ideas that are characterized by strangeness and innovation and his artistic vision that distinguishes him from other artists, and which distinguishes his artwork and woodwork from others. Thus enriching the field of woodworking arts.

The AMADEUS Collaboration conducts research aimed to experimentally investigate the low-energy K− hadronic interactions with light nuclei like hydrogen, helium, and carbon, in order to provide new constraints to the antikaon-nucleon strong interaction studies in the non-perturbative quantum chromodynamics regime. K− nuclear absorption, both at-rest and in-flight, are explored using the unique low-momentum and monochromatic kaon beam from the DAΦNE collider interacting with the KLOE detector components, a detector characterized by high acceptance and excellent position and momentum resolutions. This paper presents an overview of the AMADEUS results.

A coupled-channel S- and P-wave next-to-leading order chiral-unitary approach for strangeness S = −1 meson-baryon scattering is extended to include the new data from the KLOE and AMADEUS experiments as well as the Λπ mass distribution of the Σ(1385). The positions of the poles on the second Riemann sheet corresponding to the Σ(1385) pole and the Λ(1380) and Λ(1405) poles as well as the couplings of these states to various channels are calculated. We find that the resonance positions and branching ratios are on average determined with about 20% higher precision when including the KLOE and AMADEUS data. Additionally, for the first time, the correlations between the parameters of the poles are investigated and shown to be relevant. We also find that the Σ(1385) has negligible influence on the properties of the Λ states given the available data. Still, we identify isospin-1 cusp structures in the present solution in light of new measurements of π±Λ line-shapes by the Belle collaboration.

This paper focuses on the issue of multilingualism in contemporary literary texts, which contain examples of code-switching or words and expressions in different languages, which contribute to placing emphasis on the foreignness and strangeness of the characters or narrators of the stories. This study stems from the edition of a compilation of short narrative and dramatic texts translated into Spanish by authors who build up stories from a position of in-betweenness, rejection, or displacement. In this context, the presence of different languages contributes to revealing the multilingual and multicultural reality that provides the background for the different stories. They are all concerned about manifesting their vital experiences of (un)belonging to a certain labelled culture or identifiable group, often from a diasporic point of view. Some real examples of translation processes will be provided to show the strategies employed to preserve an effect of strangeness on readers, to reveal feelings of (un)belonging, to manifest a variety of identities, or to make explicit culturally marked terms. Translation is then approached from the perspectives of cosmopolitism, diversity, and postcolonial studies, which rely on multilingualism as a signal of a diversified and multicultural identity.

Hadronic resonances play an important role in the study of the physics of heavy-ion collisions. In these proceedings, we discuss how the resonances can probe the reaction dynamics, the strangeness production and the properties of the hadronic phase in heavy-ion collisions at center-of-mass energies of sNN = 4–11 GeV. The resonance properties predicted by the general-purpose event generators are found to be very sensitive to the properties and space-time evolution of the medium produced in heavy-ion collisions.

HélèneCixous, the renowned contemporary philosopher and feminist, provides such a heretic account of femininity which transcends the feminist social or political movements. She believes that “the female” can create a new identity for itself, when keeps its distance from the masculine symbolic order. Of course, this has nothing to do with the absence of women in the cultural realm, rather the problem is that if the female aspects of human being are not to be eliminated, a new ontology is required to sustain it in a pointlessness situation, so that it can always resist the conventional perceptual patterns. In other words, the female can only make its identity and the nature of rationality dynamic, when it injects the strangeness in the masculine order. This means keeping a position on the margins of history, while also infusing the feminine energies into the symbolic body. In this research, we try to show that for Cixous, emergence of the new is dependent both on some kind of feminine otherness and the marginality. This can be realized by various dismantling tools such as women’s writing and polyphonic identities. Finally we make it clear that through the female otherness or being on the margins, the feminine can provide a way of thinking about those realities which have not been thought up so far in the symbolic rationality, or have always been rejected as the unthinkable.

In spite of numerous studies exploring the attitudes of Polish society towards followers of Islam including Arabs or studies showing how Polish media shapes the image of Muslims and Islam, there are hardly any analyses assessing how these attitudes and images are perceived by the minority group. The purpose of this text is to fill this gap and analyse the perception of transformation of attitudes in contemporary Polish society towards Arabs from the perspective of members of the Arab and Muslim communities. The article’s analytical framework builds upon the conceptions problematizing a group sense of alienation and familiarity in the context of human mobility and immobility. In particular, the text shows the usefulness of the concept of otherness and strangeness developed by Ewa Nowicka in the late 1990s for the analysis of the transformation of attitudes towards Arabs and Muslims in Polish society in the last two decades.

Die Antike als das nächste Fremde zu bezeichnen, ist ein wiederkehrendes Phänomen in der Altphilologie. In diesem Kontext wird das zu erwerbende Verständnis für die Differenz, die aus der zeitlichen Distanz erwächst, als Argument für die Reflexion der Gegenwart formuliert. Dieser essayistische Exkurs offenbart, dass die Fremde, die in der lateinischen Literatur verhandelt wird, über die Reflexion der zeitlichen Distanz hinausgehende Argumente für die Reflexion des Begriffs Fremde per se bietet. Mittels einer interdisziplinären Zugangsweise wird ausgehend von Simmels soziologisch-philosophischer Deutung des Fremden diese mit der Latinistik dahingehend verknüpft, schulische Praxis zu reflektieren. So wird – exemplarisch an Caesars Germanenbild und Senecas commutatio loci – klar, dass die lateinische Literatur konkrete Anknüpfungspunkte ausweist, die vor allem in Inklusion betreffenden Aspekten praxisrelevant sind: die Deutung der Fremde aus dem Blickwinkel derjenigen Gruppe, welche die kulturellen Eigenheiten der als fremd beschriebenen Menschen für sich als wertvolle Erfahrungen schätzen lernen kann; und die durch Migration erworbenen Fähigkeiten im Sinne selbstreflexiver Erfahrungen, die gleichsam als Qualitäten bestehende Lerngruppen in vielfältiger Hinsicht bereichern können. Referring to antiquity as close strangeness is a recurring phenomenon in classical philology. In this context, the understanding to be acquired of the difference that arises from temporal distance is formulated as an argument for reflecting on the present. This essayistic excursus reveals that the strangeness negotiated in Latin literature offers arguments for the reflection of the concept of strangeness per se that goes beyond the reflection of temporal distance. Using an interdisciplinary approach based on Simmel’s sociological-philosophical interpretation of the stranger, this is linked with Latin studies to reflect on school practice. In this way, it becomes clear – using Caesar’s image of Germanic peoples and Seneca’s commutatio loci as examples – that Latin literature has concrete points of contact that are relevant to practice, especially in aspects relating to inclusion: the interpretation of strangeness from the perspective of the group who can learn to appreciate the cultural peculiarities of the people described as strange as valuable experiences for themselves, and the skills acquired through migration in the sense of self-reflective experiences that can enrich existing learning groups as qualities in many ways.

Nuclear matter, at sufficiently energy density and high temperature, undergoes a transition to a state of strongly interacting QCD matter in which quarks and gluons are not confined known as the Quark–Gluon Plasma (QGP). QGP is usually produced in high-energy collisions of heavy nuclei in the laboratory, where an enhancement of strange hadrons’ production is observed. Many of the effects which are typical of heavy ion phenomenology have been observed in high-multiplicity proton–proton (pp) collisions. The enhancement of strange particles’ production in pp collisions was reported at s=7 TeV and s=13 TeV in 2017 and 2020, respectively, and it was found that the integrated yields of strange particles, relative to pions, increase notably with the charged-particle multiplicity of events. Here, we report the multiplicity dependence of strange particles at |y|<0.5 in pp collisions at s = 7 TeV, 13 TeV, 20 TeV, and 27 TeV from a Monte Carlo simulation using PYTHIA8, EPOS-LHC, and Herwig7.

Monsieur M, 1968 (France, 2011), directed by Laurent Cibien and Isabelle Berteletti, is a documentary that originated from an agenda, dated 1968, found in a house after the death of its owner. Day after day, M, 41, an old boy living with his parents, an office worker at the National Geographical Institute, describes and recounts without passion the meagre events of his life, in a period when everything seems to be out of whack. Thus, the daily functionalism, lived by the strange diarist, transforms into a filmic daydream. But how does the audiovisual mediation create the poetry of daily life capable of making people think about the expression of history on screen? The ordinary daily life appears first of all essential. In addition, history is captured through the psychogeography of everyday life. Finally, the sound editing and the use of videography lead to affirm the disturbing strangeness of the story captured in M’s eye and the modalities of the resistance to May 68.

When reading Extensa (2002) by Jacek Dukaj and acquainting with its communicational and artistic implications, the reader becomes aware of relativization of otherness, as a result of the very essence of what the Other is. Thus Extensa is not exactly a story of otherness, but from the perspective of literary communication it is a story which exists outside of agreed taxonomy and is foreign to the clear, contemporary division into fantasy and mainstream. This means that Dukaj’s Extensa both presents the otherness of the novel (towards the reader’s expectations), as well as it is a story about otherness itself. Entangled in the strangeness of the novel, in the light of its line of communication and previous interpretational schema – created on the basis of previously read science-fiction novels – the reader is bound to feel alienated due to the difference between what is anticipated and what is presented. Paradoxically, the otherness both of the novel (in the context of the genre’s tradition and of the line of communication in which it functions) and its fictional world allows redefinition of the cognising subject who must manage his own, unpredictable “otherness.” This is because the Other remains a symbol of all that undergoes change. Thus, the attitude towards the Other becomes a challenge that requires a confrontation with our own self and, at the same time, it is an “empathy exercise” which rejects mutual dependencies of empathy and stereotypisation, typical for modern literature.

We propose a hypothesis on the influence that literature has on the mind of the reader. The case of Shakespeare’s texts and the relationships they create during the performance demonstrate that the power of books always lies in the mind of the reader.

O presente trabalho é uma tentativa de ler a obra de Alejandra Pizarnik e Cristina Peri Rossi de forma a analisar suas poéticas em relação aos conflitos e contextos culturais e territoriais que as perpassam, tanto no que tange as construções subjetivas de cada uma quanto dos imaginários urbanos em que estão inseridas. Para tal abordagem, iremos focar em três principais conceitos, que de forma por vezes semelhante e por outras vertiginosamente distinta parecem indissociáveis da poética construída por ambas Pizarnik e Peri Rossi: o estranhamento (de si e do outro), o exílio e a nostalgia. Esses três elementos parecem chaves para se compreender a condição de ser no mundo das autoras, sua escrita e a metaforização espacial constitutiva de ambas, além de se relacionarem também com parte da formação subjetiva e histórico-geográfica das cidades de Buenos Aires e Montevidéu e da região do Rio da Prata de forma geral.

In this paper we measured invariant transverse momentum spectra and nuclear modification factors of K*(892)-mesons in Cu + Au collisions at √(s_NN ) = 200 GeV. The measurements were performed in five centrality bins in the range of transverse momentum from 2,0 to 5,75 GeV/c in the PHENIX experiment on the RHIC. Nuclear modification factors were compared with previously obtained PHENIX data in Cu + Cu collisions at √(s_NN ) = 200 GeV. The nuclear modification factors of K*-mesons in Cu + Cu and Cu + Au collisions at the same values of a number of participants (N_part) have a similar shape.

Objectives. This paper explores the anthropological difference through the analysis of bringing rescue. To bring rescue to the other should be founded on the recognition of his suffering. But in many cases, this recognition is faulty and is based on a misunderstanding of animal/insect world. Material and methods. Through a case study of two famous literary texts in which a human-beetle relationship appears (authored by F. Kafka and W. Gombrowicz), at the crossing of philosophy and poetry, the author of the article tries to approach as close as possible the experience of a trans-humanist rescue attempt. Results and Conclusions. The metamorphosis effectuates a true displacement in the relationship between man and animal but what Kafka describes is not the transfiguration of man into a beetle but rather the metamorphosis that affects the family.

We describe the electroproduction ratios of baryon–meson states from nucleon, inferring from the sea quarks in the nucleon using an extension of the quark model that takes into account the sea. As a result we provide, with no adjustable parameters, the predictions of ratios of exclusive meson–baryon final states: ΛK+, Σ⁎K, ΣK, pπ0, and nπ+. These predictions are in agreement with the new JLab experimental data showing that sea quarks play an important role in the electroproduction. We also predicted further ratios of exclusive reactions that can be measured and tested in future experiments. In particular, we suggested new experiments on deuterium and tritium. Such measurements can provide crucial tests of different predictions concerning the structure of nucleon and its sea quarks helping to solve an outstanding problem. Finally, we compute the so called strangeness suppression factor, λs, that is the suppression of strange quark–antiquark pairs compared to nonstrange pairs, and we found that our finding with this simple extension of the quark model is in good agreement with the results of JLab and CERN experiments.

In this study the alteration of the city culture and human types trying to harmonize with this alteration are being analyzed through the usage of hermeneutics and the theory and method of aesthetics of reception through the Mevlut figure who migrated from Konya Eregli to Istanbul. As narrated in the novel it can be said that new districts have emerged along with the city center of Istanbul as a result of internal migration and it makes Istanbul partly a rural city and those who immigrated from villages to Istanbul harmonize with urban culture in Istanbul. In the novel it is frequently emphasized that the immigrants can lead a life by working at service industry that requires a heavy productivity. The protagonist of the novel, Mevlüt sells boza and yoghurt like his father. The author who cares about the culture and history of the city, describes each component shaping the culture of daily urban life. The analysis can be based on the strangenesses in boza seller Mevlut’s mind and boza, which both constitutes the literary center of the novel and is narrativated in the novel as a traditional cultural value. Furthermore, to be successful in creating the main and secondary characters, Pamuk must have observed the working condition of boza and yoghurt sellers in order to know them in a better way and he makes use of their way of expressing themselves. In this way, the book “A Strangeness in My Mind” gains a feature of sound pluralism and intertextuality. This specific side of the novel is included in to the analysis in this study. Author of the novel, Orhan Pamuk, born in Istanbul, has an intense remembrance on boza and other similar elements of culture. As a result of this, this cultural colors and elements composing Istanbul’s cultural side can be largely seen in the analysis. As depicted in the novel, Boza is an alcoholic drink that gives people chance to spend time with amusement as an immanent for everyone.

The production of dibaryons, light nuclei and hypertriton in the most central Au+Au collisions at sNN=11.5 and 200 GeV is investigated by using a naive coalescence model. The production of light nuclei is studied and found that the production rate reduces by a factor of 330 (1200) for each extra nucleon added to nuclei at sNN=11.5(200) GeV. The pT integrated yield of multistrange hadrons falls exponentially as strangeness quantum number increases. We further investigate strangeness population factors S3,S2 as a function of transverse momentum as well as sNN. The calculations for sNN=11.5 GeV presented here will stimulate interest to carry out these measurements during the phase-II of beam energy scan program at STAR experiment.

Abstract – The present chapter focuses on the clinical relationship with foreign entities in which the foreignness is both a state language and a legal status, and thus a contingent and not existential condition. The issue concerns the translatability of language and meaning of the Other: this raises the issue of understanding and the possibility of communication and exchange. Starting from the discussion of the concepts of culture and context in the post-modern paradigm, a general model of clinical and social intervention is proposed involving a form of negotiation setting, based on extraneousness and contingency. Context and culture do not respond to universal categories, to limited space-time frames but they are the way in which the subject intends the world and his experience. This semiotic-clinical disposal represents a criterion of knowledge of the individual configurations. So it is possible to intercept the personal resources to orient a contingency-based intervention that promotes a process of co-construction of meaning, a product of the relationship between the actors. The object of the relation is the relational process in a clinical and social setting; thus, the model can direct the organization and provision of services for foreign nationals. The role of the interpreter is also considered in its general function and in particular contexts of service. The negotiating approach overcomes some critical issues integrating the semiotic socio-constructivist model with other social sciences.

The second week of the first round of hearings of the South African Truth and Reconciliation Commission took place in Cape Town. On 2 April 1996 four mothers testified that Security Forces killed their sons during an incident that became known as the Gugulethu Seven. One of them was Mrs Notrose Nobomvu Konile. Of the four mothers she testified last and presented a testimony that seemed largely incoherent with very little detail about her son. Using the original Xhosa testimony the authors try to understand Mrs Konile. This essay focuses exclusively on her description of what the authors refer to as the “rock-incident”. The essay uses the original narrative with its embedded cultural contexts as well as a new translation to trace some of the different stages and places where incomprehension had been created.

Simmel’s sociological approach foregrounds the paper’s investigation of the relationship between society, imaginary and space. Space as a locus of meaning is a social construction but also possesses some qualities which create a border to the imaginaries producing them. In this context, the categories of space and place, which correspond to social forms or phenomena, are considered as a rhythmic polarity. In the late Modernity, the imaginaries of alterity generate new places, re-enchanting the functionalized spaces which are now meaningless and left to neglect.

Albert Memmi’s first autobiographical novel, called La statue de sel, was published in 1953. Born in a Jewish family, Memmi grows up in Tunisia at a time where this Muslim majority country was still a French protectorate. Growing up in such an exceptional environment causes him a serious identity crisis. At 35, Memmi realizes that only literature can help him understand his place in the world. In this paper, we would like to analyze the feeling of strangeness Albert Memmi grew up with, paying special attention to his books: La statue de sel and the Portrait du colonisé, an essay published in 1957 as a theoretical complement to the novel.

School transmission of an intelligibility of the past is subject to all kinds of pressure in the public space, and even a real tyrannical orthodoxy. Countless actors proclaim a sententious tone that should be school history, usually in a straitjacket of identity and prescriptive far from any scientific requirement. But this is for the school context, the didactic transposition of a social science discipline whose purpose is to promote a self-critical thought and discernment to act in the social world. This objective requires giving up both to a fall on a closed and inculcation of cumulative knowledge and education is sententious, is so entertaining it would not allow students to work this feeling of strangeness that should mark any relationship past and its differences. It is however possible to make them tasty build knowledge that enable them to better understand the world in which they live.

Since the 1960s, the German-born US-American poet, Rosmarie Waldrop, has translated over 40 different works, largely from French and German, including 14 volumes by the Jewish French-language writer, Edmond Jabès (Jabès was expelled from Egypt in 1956 during the Suez Crisis). In 2003, Waldrop was made a Chevalier des Arts et des Lettres by the French Government, and in 2008 she received the PEN Award for Poetry in Translation in 2008, for her translation of Ulf Stolterfoht’s book, Lingos I-IX. As well as practising translation, however, Waldrop has also written several significant essays which reflect on different theories of translation and their implications for practice. Much of these considerations are taken up with the question of the relation between translation and writing, of thinking the ways in which theories of writing might suggest the lines for developing a specific form of poetic practice.This essay provides an overview of Waldrop’s central thoughts on translation and contextualises these in relation to some of the major theories of literary translation. In the latter part of the essay, these ideas are developed in specific relation to Waldrop’s translations of the work of Edmond Jabès and to the notion of writing practice it suggests.

Simulating Many Accelerated Strongly-interacting Hadrons (SMASH) is a new hadronic transport approach designed to describe the non-equilibrium evolution of heavy-ion collisions. The production of strange particles in such systems is enhanced compared to elementary reactions (Blume and Markert 2011), providing an interesting signal to study. Two different strangeness production mechanisms are discussed: one based on resonances and another using forced canonical thermalization. Comparisons to experimental data from elementary collisions are shown.

Este texto se baseia na hipótese de que estamos sempre entre línguas-culturas, mesmo quando falamos uma única língua. Tem por objetivo estudar relações interculturais e efeitos de estranhamento em relatos de brasileiros, que participaram desta pesquisa, sobre suas experiências em Portugal. Para este artigo, quatro relatos foram gravados e transcritos. A perspectiva teórica adotada se encontra no espaço - conflituoso e tenso - entre teorias do discurso, psicanálise lacaniana e desconstrução derrideana. Da análise é possível depreender que a suposta língua materna é também uma língua estrangeira, estranha em sua familiaridade, provocando sofrimento e gozo ao mesmo tempo. Refletir sobre isso é muito importante para compreender a si próprio e ao outro, língua e cultura, que constroem nossa subjetividade e, portanto, nossa identidade.This paper is based upon the hypothesis that we are always between languages-cultures, even when we speak only one language. It aims at studying intercultural relations and the effects of strangeness, in narratives of some Brazilians, participating in this research, about their experiences in Portugal. For this paper, four narratives have been recorded and transcribed. The theoretical perspective is situated in the space - in conflict and tense - between discourse theories, Lacanian psychoanalysis and derridean deconstruction. From the analysis it is possible to notice that the supposed mother tongue is also a foreign language, strange in its familiarity, provoking suffering and enjoyment at the same time. Reflecting about this seems very important to understand oneself and the other, language and culture, responsible for our subjectivity and, therefore, our identity.

We have extracted the kaon-hyperon-nucleon coupling constant by means of a model-independent method and recent experimental data on kaon photoproduction off a nucleon. The extracted coupling constant is consistent with the SU(3) prediction as well as with the values obtained from the kaon-nucleon scattering process.

Russia, Women and Expression… On the Strategies of Removing the Stranger from Translation of Leonid Andreev’s Short Story: Žiznʹ Vasiliâ Fivejskogo The article presents a comparative analysis of two Polish translations of Leonid Andreev’s short story Жизнь Василия Фивейского, made by: Stanislawa Kruszewska (Żywot Bazylego Fiwejskiego) and Henryk and Jan Zbierzchowski (Życie o. Wasyla / Ojciec Wasyl z Teb). The aim of the comparison is to describe numerous types of manipulation strategies used by Zbierzchowski brothers in order to adjust the story to the norms of target culture. The changes in their translation are related to cultural, aesthetic and gender “strangeness”, which has been removed from the text. In the Author’s opinion, most of the assimilating strategies used by translators should be analyzed in the context of Henryk Zbierzchowski’s literary works.

In Brodeck’s Report, Philippe Claudel addresses the theme of the regard of a community towards the alien. In a small border town, a local resident, Brodeck, is charged against his will by the rest of the community to prepare a report on a dramatic event. By means of this forced writing about the lynching of a foreigner by the rest of the villagers, Brodeck plunges back into his recent past, in the suffering of the prisoners’ camps in his own experience of xenophobia. It is then that in Brodeck’s writing, anonymous text and intimate confession are joined and take us towards the unspeakable pain, to appease it through the writing of survival. In our article we will attempt to show how Philippe Claudel built in this timeless tale, in this anonymous reconstruction of the facts, what the Brodeck’s Report is: a plea against xenophobia.

At the end of the year 1942 in occupied France the novelist and translator Alexandre Vialatte published a novel called "The faithful Berger" in which the hero has a delirious fit when, having been captured by the Germans, he is marching towards captivity. Berger is very much like Vialatte's double who had this experience when he was captured in May 1940. Berger, exhausted, in despair over the collapse of his country, sees the world around him become unreal and reality become an enigma. The longer his march lasts, the more this end-of-the-world delirium takes hold of him. He tries to commit suicide and is interned in a Mental hospital. At the end of the novel he is reunited with his own but remains bewildered by his despair. The novelist presents his character as imprisoned in time standing still, a strange closed-in place. The time that the hero lives in is that of the apocalypse, the time of the fall of his country. It is the writer's artistic talent that has made a novel out of this and not a psychopathological account.

Ex silentio. On Paul Celan’s Poem “Todtnauberg” This paper contests the interpretative framework proposed by Hans Georg Gadamer and Cezary Wodziński in their interpretations of certain poems by Paul Celan. The point of contention lies in the understanding of the relationship between biography and poem. The author analyses the “concept of discretion,” which excludes Celan’s Jewish identity from the analysis of his poetry, and proposes her own reading of both his poem Todtnauberg and anti-volkist interpretation Hüttenfenster. The background consists of the polemic about the famous meeting of Paul Celan and Martin Heidegger in August 1, 1967 in Todtnauberg.

This book comprises the papers of a multidisciplinary workshop on the topic of foreignness/strangeness held at the Catholic University of Eichstätt, Germany, in July 2004. Seven authors try to critically question ways of conceiving foreignness instead of understanding or explaining it in the first place, doing so as a means of changing perspectives. The papers deal with the self-evidence of presumed Otherness and with aspects of constructing Otherness that appear to be strange indeed. A lengthy essay written by two of the editors rounds up the collection. The book is theoretically profound and politically ambitious, since both the workshop and the publication of its proceedings have an important aim: to develop an international and transcultural horizon of values for a common political and social agency based on multi- or interdisciplinary debates. The latter are conceived of as not only dealing with the objects of research, but with its subjects and with the multiple proceedings that lie behind the ways of getting to know the Other by constructing it. The question of the significance and importance of ethnographic approaches within the German-speaking sports sciences could briefly be answered with a "negative report", if one is interested in having a look at studies that are explicitly accounted as ethnographic. This estimation changes, if the perspective is widened and the idea of "estrangement of the own culture" (i.e. the sports culture), as one main principle of research interest in sports sciences, is taken as a basis. The vitality of the development, establishment and variation alone of so-called youth cultures (and their interpretations of sports) or even the exclusiveness and extremeness of particular traditional areas in sports (e.g. top-level sport) contain to a substantial extent experiences of foreignness. However, with the areas mentioned a complete naming of items is not intended. In fact, in this context efforts increased in the last few years to understand such "life-worlds", which can be described with the term "life-world ethnography", although the particular authors did not do so themselves. Against this background the article describes the following issues at hand: first, it deals with the explication of a kind of ethnographic self-conception which opens up additional possibilities for sports science, secondly, existing studies in sports science are examined for these possibilities, and finally, the question of potential benefit of a explicit and systematic integration of ethnographic research into sports science is discussed. Jacques Derrida notes that “there can be no culture or social bond without a principle of hospitality”. But in the very definition of hospitality, strangeness is always a fundamental condition. There is no hospitality unless a stranger knocks on our door and asks to enter our home, whether immigrant or refugee – in any case: someone other than ourselves. But who is the stranger, and from whom? How the “becoming a stranger” is activated, through me or through the way I am seen by others? At this crossroads of the self as other (as Paul Ricœur would say) and the other as self, everything depends on where we place the rule of (national, religious, social, cultural) normality, in our own world or in the world of the other. The boundary that unites and separates the two worlds is the regime of hospitality.
