Abstract

Abstracts of 36 research reports are provided. The reports were prepared by investigators for presentation at the 55th annual meeting of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics. A broad range of topics related to mathematics education is covered. Nine reports deal with problem solving, eight are concerned with instructional methods, five with space and geometry, and four with numbers and operations. Two reports concern reading and writing skills in mathematics, two deal with testing and measurement procedures, and two concern program evaluation. Other papers deal with logic, effective teachers, learning aids for the blind, and models of mathematics learning. (DT)

5. Mathematics Laboratories: 150 Activities and Games for Elementary Schools.

Abstract

This volume presents a collection of activities and games for use in elementary school mathematics laboratories. The activities and games included were submitted by classroom teachers and were selected for their use of manipulative materials or their reliance on student interactions. Several of the activities included have been described in "The Arithmetic Teacher," but many are first published in this volume. Activities described are in eight subject matter categories: (1) number concepts, (2) addition and subtraction, (3) multiplication and division, (4) number skills review, (5) measurement, (6) fractions, (7) graphs and functions, and (8) geometric concepts. The goals of activities range from increasing speed and power in computational situations to concept learning, development of strategies, and discovery. Each activity description is in outline form and includes statements of goals and purposes materials needed, procedures involved, and activity source. Many descriptions include diagrams and instructions for making any necessary materials. (SD)

Abstract

This publication reviews the mathematical laboratory from three perspectives: a practical view of laboratories in operation, a review of related research, and a view of current laboratory evaluation procedures. After a discussion of definitions, types, and purposes of math labs, the first paper concentrates on their historical development in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, from their inception in 1967 through 1972. Despite continued interest throughout this period, actual numbers declined rapidly after 1970. Several reasons for this decline are cited. Several projects are reviewed; specifically discussed are problems, solutions, and results. Although generally pessimistic regarding the future of math labs, the author mentions several innovative movements as possible reversing trends. The second paper reviews research on math labs and activity learning, describes ways to employ math labs most effectively, and discusses some apparent effects on student achievement and attitudes (specifically, achievement gains in less able elementary children, with no effect on attitudes). This paper is followed by an extensive bibliography. The third paper critically analyzes seven specific project evaluations--their data collection techniques, types of analyses, and results. Following a discussion of difficulties encountered, the author makes some suggestions, based on the need for individually tailored evaluations. (CR)

Two articles deal with the interaction of personality variables with decision making and performance, respectively, one with testing, and one with student evaluation of teaching. Other reports abstracted concern ability, dyscalculia, and evaluation of a kindergarten program. 10. Activity-Based Learning in Elementary School Mathematics: Recommendations from Research.

Abstract

Research conducted in grades K-8 on activity-based teaching approaches, including studies on the use of manipulative materials, is reviewed and synthesized in this report. On the basis of the synthesis, it was concluded that lessons using manipulative materials have a higher probability of producing greater mathematical achievement than do non-manipulative lessons. Use of both manipulative materials and pictorial representations is highly effective; symbolic treatments alone are less effective. The use of materials appears to be effective with children at all achievement levels, ability levels, and socioeconomic levels. Activity-oriented programs and the use of mathematic laboratories can be expected to result in achievement at least as high as when activities are not emphasized. Other conclusions are also presented, plus implications for further research. Implications for classroom practice and five guidelines for those planning projects or selecting programs are presented. 12. Assessing Mathematical Achievement.

Abstract

This report was compiled to serve as a reference on assessments of achievement in pre-college mathematics. Patterns of mathematical assessments are discussed in terms of the history and nature of assessments of achievement, the relationship between assessment and minimum competency testing, and the current status of state assessment programs. Trends in mathematics achievement are examined by presentation of portions of reports of the National Assessment of Educational Progress and the California Assessment, grades six and twelve. Conclusions drawn from examination of these assessment data include: (1) Although schools have been successful in teaching whole number computation, they have been only moderately successful with decimals and even less successful in teaching computation with fractions; (2) Students who know "how" to compute frequently do not know "when" or "where" to compute; (3) Schools must broaden their veiw of basic arithmetic if they expect students to use what they are taught. 16. Calculators, Computers, and Classrooms.

Abstract

Suggestions for using four-function calculators, programmable calculators, and microcomputers are considered in this collection of 36 articles. The first section contains articles considering general implications for mathematics curricula implied by the freedom calculators offer students from routine computation, enabling them to focus on results and relationships, and is balanced by Section Two, exploring inappropriate ways calculators can be used. Freedom from thinking about routine calculations provides freedom for thinking about problem solving is the theme of Section Three. Articles in Section Four include some specific lesson ideas for using calculators in the classroom. Section Five focuses on programmable calculators. Section Six contains articles which consider ways in which microcomputers can be introduced into schools, addressing physical, economic, and political issues. Section Seven explores implications of the computer on mathematics curricula, considering both new topics and new approaches to old topics (such as computer assisted instruction). Computer literacy is the theme of Section Eight, suggesting that although all students need to know about computers, "what" they need to know is debatable. The ability to simulate real-world events (computer simulations) is considered in the final section, suggesting that this ability opens new areas for mathematical exploration. (Author/JN)

Abstract

This is the first issue of a new quarterly series containing expanded abstracts of recent research in mathematics education. (Previous issues were occasional publications of the School Mathematics Study Group.) The twenty abstracts review research articles published in the past two years, and are classified in four sections: (1) Aspects of mathematics learning, (2) Mathematics instruction and instructional materials, (3) Mathematics achievement and its correlates, and (4) Teacher education and evaluation. Each abstract includes an objective indication of the purpose, rationale, research design and procedure, findings, and interpretation of the investigation as originally reported, together with a critical analysis by the abstractor. All abstractors are mathematics educators in professional positions. For ease of reference, each abstract includes the ERIC accession numbers, descriptors, and identifiers of the article. Future issues of this publication will include abstracts of non-journal material available through the ERIC service. (MM)

20. The Mathematics Through Science Study: Attitude Changes in a Mathematics Laboratory, School Mathematics Study Group Reports Number 8.

Abstract

The results of a study of student attitudes toward mathematics before and after studying a "Mathematics Through Science" unit in the eighth grade are given in this report. Six significant attitude differences were found and used to group students into eight attitude groups. The identifying characteristics of these groups are discussed in detail. The number of teachers represented in each group is considered, as are the number of boys and girls in each group. Mean scores of the groups on ability, algebra achievement, and attitude are compared. No significant differences for any of these scales were found which hold for both of the samples considered. It was concluded that the formation of strong cohesive attitudes-groups is not a major factor for consideration in the design of mathematics units taught via physical materials. Using a broad definition of research to include evaluative studies of large curriculum projects or teacher-training programs, Investigations in Mathematics Education (IME) is a quarterly journal of expanded abstracts and critical analyses of recent research in mathematics education. The 16 abstracts in this issue were done especially for IME by professionals in the field in the United States and Canada. Each abstract states the purpose, rationale, research design and procedure, findings, and interpretations of the study as well as notes on the study from the abstractor. A wide range of topics is covered, including mathematics language, problem-solving, sequencing, structured learning, attitudes, and calculus with computers. Abstracts of 28 research reports are provided. The reports were prepared by investigators for presentation at the 54th annual meeting of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics. A broad range of topics related to mathematics education are covered. Three reports concern the effects of differing presentations of mathematics, four are related to attitudes of teachers or students, and three to interactions of personality variables with mathematics learning. Three papers concern problem solving, three deal with logic, and two concern the division algorithm. Other papers concern readability of achievement tests, learning of fractions, measurement, cultural differences in mathematics learning, uses of computer graphics, comparison of calculus courses in high school and college, effectiveness of a remediation program, the use of homework, and field testing of a teacher education program. Abstract

This volume provides a compilation of nearly 2000 abstracts and indices for selected documents announced in RESOURCES IN EDUCATION (RIE) during the period 1973-1975; it supplements an earlier compilation of selected documents announced between 1966 and 1972. The documents selected for inclusion include research reports, teaching guides, instructional materials, and others. Easy access to these documents is provided by four indexes; each document is indexed by subject, author, identifiers, and institutional author. These indexes refer the user to abstracts of documents by reference to their ED numbers. All information provided for documents in conjunction with an RIE announcement is provided for each item listed in this volume. (SD)

34. The Mathematics Through Science Study: Attitude Changes in a Mathematics Laboratory. School Mathematics Study Group Reports Number 8.

Abstract

The results of a study of student attitudes toward mathematics before and after studying a "Mathematics Through Science" unit in the eighth grade are given in this report. Six significant attitude differences were found and used to group students into eight attitude groups. The identifying characteristics of these groups are discussed in detail. The number of teachers represented in each group is considered, as are the number of boys and girls in each group. Mean scores of the groups on ability, algebra achievement, and attitude are compared. No significant differences for any of these scales were found which hold for both of the samples considered. It was concluded that the formation of strong cohesive attitudes-groups is not a major factor for consideration in the design of mathematics units taught via physical materials. (Author/FL)

Reported is a study measuring attitude changes among eighth-graders resulting from studying a unit in mathematics using laboratory materials. Students were grouped into eight naturally occurring attitude-groups. The results indicate that the formation of attitude-groups is not a major factor for consideration in the design of mathematics units taught via physical materials. (Author/CT)
