An age-old question among instructors and administrators is whether time spent studying course material results in the student success. This study analyzes this relationship for two online and two face-to-face business finance courses using the Canvas Learning Management System (LMS). The relationship between the average exam scores and the "total activity" measuring time spent online in hours is statistically significant for the online courses, and insignificant for the face-to-face courses. Additionally, the results indicate that the hard work may not pay off for the students who spent too many hours online with the course material.

Online teaching is growing in popularity. This paper presents a case study for an online business course investigating student exam scores obtained from non-randomized and randomized exams. We find that the non-randomized exam scores of the students are suspicious because there are statistically significant disparities from the randomized exam scores. Further, the paper explores the constraints placed on instructors to construct randomized exams due to an insufficient number of questions in test banks provided by textbook publishers.

This paper uses Excel to enhance the pedagogy of capital structure theory for corporate finance instructors and students. We provide a lesson plan that utilizes Excel spreadsheets and graphs to develop understanding of the theory. The theory is introduced in three scenarios that utilize Modigliani & Miller's Propositions and "trade-off" theory.

The authors offer a classification technique to make a quantitative skills rubric more operational, with the groupings of multiple-choice questions to match the student learning levels in knowledge, calculation, quantitative reasoning, and analysis. The authors applied this classification technique to the mid-term exams of an introductory finance course in six sections, with 191 junior and senior business students using a course-embedded assessment methodology and a regional test in California revealing that there were shortcomings in our teachings of financial facts and concepts.
