Abstract

International large-scale assessments (ILSAs) have become an important part of the Swedish evaluation system. It is therefore of crucial importance to validate national measures of Swedish students' achievement with their ILSA test scores. Here, we offer results from such a validation study based on Swedish students' test scores in IEA's Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study (TIMSS) 2015 in year 8, their final grades at year 9, and their national test grades at year 9. We find there is high consistency between what is measured in TIMSS and what is measured by indicators in the Swedish national assessment system.

Abstract

This article presents gender perspectives on the formation of the preschool teacher and the formation of a domain for education and child rearing of young children, commenting on the designation of the professional field of education as "female territory." The report uses the results from two Swedish studies: the first dealing with the period from 1900-1945 and the development of the new profession for caring and education along with its significance as a starting point for redistribution of responsibility for child care; the follow-up study on 1945-1972, a period in Swedish preschool history characterized by the integration of the field into state and municipal structures and by resistance toward the development of a professional domain for early childhood education. Methods used in the studies were quantitative and qualitative textual analysis of the Swedish magazine, "Kindergarten (The Pre-School)," official reports and legislation, interviews, and archival materials. The article addresses political implications for child care and early childhood education, asserting that the development of the preschool field shows the relationship between men and women as more important in deciding roles and behaviors than the gender definition itself. Other issues discussed include the societal and spiritual mother models, sex segregation, patriarchal ideas, paternal protection, and Froebelian theories. Contains 49 references. (BGC)

Abstract

This report summarizes a doctoral thesis defended and published in Swedish in 1991 at the Malmo School of Education, University of Lund. The thesis examined the preconditions necessary for the development of a new profession in Sweden for the education and care of young children in the 19th century. These preconditions led to the creation, in the early 20th century, of kindergartens for working-class Swedish families. The study focused on the period 1904-1944, from the origin of the first privately-funded kindergarten for the working-class, until the beginning of state provision of kindergarten education. The work and lives of Ellen and Maria Moberg, who founded the first kindergarten, and a training school for kindergarten teachers known as the Froebel Institute, are also chronicled. The thesis concludes that kindergarten teaching developed as a female profession due to its association with child rearing and home life. The kindergarten could also be seen as a well-arranged home for children or, by its critics, as a provocation to the sovereignty of the family. To reform-minded liberals in the early 20th century, kindergarten was viewed as an instrument for changing and improving home life and child-rearing practices among the working class. (MDM)

4. The Boston Naming Test in Swedish: Normative Data

Abstract

The purpose of the present study was to introduce a Swedish version of the Boston Naming Test and to offer normative data based on a sample of native Swedish-speaking healthy adults stratified concerning age, gender, and length of education. The subjects were assessed with other lexical tests and half of the group also performed tests of global cognitive function. A semantic analysis of the responses was performed and the typical Swedish naming of the pictures of BNT was investigated. The results showed that long education, high performance on tests of global cognitive ability (FSIQ), verbal fluency, and other lexical tests had a significant positive association to a good performance on BNT whereas age and gender had a minor influence. The response analysis showed that the more difficult an item was, the more variations in the response pattern. To conclude, the Boston Naming Test is appropriate for use in a Swedish-speaking context and an effective test for assessment of naming ability.

Describes recent changes in Swedish system of child care and early childhood education and analyzes them in relation to economic and socio-political context. Argues that early childhood education is an important part of the welfare society, which itself is in a state of transition, with neo-liberal ideas and economic constraints implying financial cuts and changes in child-care policies.
