Slovak writer Vladimir Ferko composed a number of works which magnified the significant role of tinkers in Slovak populism and nationalism. One of Ferko's most outstanding works, 'Ako dive husi,' or 'Like Wild Geese,' portrays the orphan Juraj Kypus' life of extreme poverty. Juraj is almost raised by a local beggar-woman, but his grandfather, who is a tinker, returns from his travels and smuggles him to another country by hiding him in a copper pot. Ferko depicts tinkers' struggle for freedom in an attempt to show that Slovaks are peaceful, freedom-loving individuals.
