Abstract

Research suggests that renal lesions in Baltic Sea ringed and grey seals are due in part to organochlorine contamination. Kidney changes consist primarily of focal replacement of normal epithelial cells by proliferations of multilayered cells. Seals in zoos which were fed fish from the Baltic Sea also exhibited these physiological changes.

Abstract

Noninvasive computed tomography (pQCT) is used to study bone mineral density in male Baltic grey seals between the age of 4-23 years of age. The results indicate different responses over time in trabecular and cortical bone.
